Fiorentina 5 Inter 4: Icardi hat-trick not enough for hapless Inter

    fiorentina-cropped_157oxqjghnz3p1loan184tmc0p.jpg

Mauro Icardi's hat-trick counted for nothing as Inter slumped to a 5-4 defeat to Fiorentina in a remarkable Serie A encounter at Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Three goals in the space of eight second-half minutes - plus a 79th-minute effort from Khouma Babacar - looked to have wrapped up the points for Fiorentina, but two late goals from Icardi set-up a grandstand finish in an incredible clash.
Having initially come from a goal behind thanks to strikes from Ivan Perisic and Icardi, Stefano Pioli's Inter looked in good shape heading into the second half.

However, despite Federico Bernardeschi squandering an opportunity from the penalty spot, Fiorentina - who had taken a 23rd-minute lead courtesy of Matias Vecino's first goal of the season - blitzed their way through Inter's ramshackle defence midway through a thrilling second period.

Samir Handanovic had made a string of fine saves prior to the 62nd minute, but his untimely slip allowed Davide Astori to level matters with a looping header before Vecino netted his second and Babacar got in on the act with two brilliantly-taken goals.

Icardi's goals either side of the 90-minute mark applied the pressure late on, but Fiorentina ultimately held firm to secure a famous victory, moving to within a point of seventh-placed Inter in the process.

Inter started well - both Perisic and Icardi testing Ciprian Tatarusanu from acute angles before Borja Valero and Babacar forced Handanovic into action at the other end.

Handanovic could do nothing to prevent Fiorentina's opener, though, as Vecino thumped in an emphatic first-time finish after connecting with Hrvoje Milic's low cross.Fiorentina's lead was short-lived though, as Perisic restored parity at the culmination of a free-flowing counter.

Perisic sent Antonio Candreva free down the right, and the former Lazio winger made no mistake in picking out the Croatia forward, who duly tucked home from close range.

Inter were ahead six minutes later - Icardi brushing aside Carlos Sanchez before dispatching a low finish into the left corner.

Handanovic had to be at his best once more on the stroke of half-time, reacting superbly to spare Miranda's blushes, and Inter's goalkeeper was the hero again after the interval.

Danilo D'Ambrosio was harshly adjudged to have brought down Babacar in the area, but justice was done when Bernardeschi drilled the resulting penalty straight at Handanovic.

Fiorentina were level soon after, however, as Handanovic's slip prevented him from keeping out Astori's header.Fiorentina were looking rampant, and had their third a minute later when Vecino slotted home from the edge of the area at the end of a superb run.

Inter's shocking second-half display was made worse moments later, Babacar adding a fourth with a wonderfully disguised finish into the bottom-right corner and then nudging home his second of the match nine minutes later. And despite Fiorentina's three-goal cushion, Babacar's second goal ultimately proved decisive, after Icardi tucked in Perisic's cross before bringing up his hat-trick with a powerful header in stoppage time.

There was to be more drama, though, as - in the final minute of stoppage time - Astori hooked Marcelo Brozovic's strike off the line to preserve the three points.

Bale is injured again. What a bad season this has been for him. Feels sad. Casemiro is so close to being sent off. He should be careful or he should be subbed. We should step up and be more aggressive.

    Hala Madrid!

Griezmann considering Manchester United and Real Madrid offers

    antoinegriezmann-cropped_pngryohghask18kql0vgq5eb5.jpg

Antoine Griezmann will consider offers from Manchester United and Real Madrid this summer, but he remains open to staying with Atletico Madrid next season.

The France superstar has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford, while a shock move across the city to Los Blancos has also been mooted.

Griezmann scored his 100th La Liga goal in Atleti's 1-0 win over Espanyol on Saturday, while Diego Simeone's men also have a Champions League semi-final against their city rivals on the horizon. But it remains to be seen if Griezmann, who has a €100million release clause in his contract, will be with the club next season and his advisor Eric Olhats says several avenues are being explored, with United's offer the "first" to arrive.

"There is an existing clause of €100million which is unavoidable," he told Telefoot. "We're thinking right now about the most suitable offer. Real Madrid and other clubs are part of this thinking process.

"Antoine doesn't want to leave the club at any cost. That is false. We are going to observe."There is Manchester United, they told us about their project. They were the first and the most solid in their enquiry."However, Olhats says that there has been no contact with Paris Saint-Germain and does not foresee Griezmann moving to the Ligue 1 champions.

"No, no contact with PSG," he added. "Last year, there was a real interest. Not this year. He might not be in their plans anymore."

AC Milan 1 Empoli 2: Suso pays the penalty as Rossoneri's European bid takes a hit

    suso-cropped_j30m7g4mj1ha1nk5vxryjaw4d.jpg

Suso's missed penalty ultimately proved costly as AC Milan's Europa League hopes took a hit in a 2-1 defeat to lowly Empoli at San Siro.

Milan were aiming to build on last weekend's dramatic 2-2 draw against city rivals Inter and a win would have given them a five-point buffer over their rivals in Serie A.

However, despite dominating large periods of the first half - in which they were restricted to mainly long-range efforts - Levan Mchedlidze headed home in the 41st minute to put Empoli in front.

The home side had the chance to draw level when Empoli goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski felled Mario Pasalic, but the goalkeeper made amends by keeping out Suso's effort.Substitute Carlos Bacca then missed a great chance from close range and Empoli made Milan pay when Mame Thiam rifled in a second in the 67th minute.

Gianluca Lapadula, who scored twice in a 4-1 win over Empoli in this season's reverse fixture, halved the deficit with a well-placed effort but Milan were unable to repeat the heroics they produced against the Nerazzurri and stay sixth, just two points above rivals Inter and five adrift of Atalanta in fifth.

For Empoli, the win follows a fine victory over Fiorentina last week, but Crotone's triumph at Sampdoria means they stay just five points above their relegation rivals, who are 18th.

Milan were bright from the off and Gerard Deulofeu twice laid on Suso with presentable efforts on the edge of the area that the Spaniard failed to capitalise on.
Davide Calabria's low right-wing cross then picked out Lapadula, but the striker - in for Bacca as one of three Milan three changes - scuffed his shot at Skorupski from 12 yards.

The hosts almost shot themselves in the foot when Cristian Zapata undercooked his backpass, but Omar El Kaddouri failed to poke his shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Milan continued to dominate possession, but were restricted to mainly long-range shots and they were undone before the break when El Kaddouri's corner from the left was powerfully headed home by Mchedlidze at the near post inside the six-yard box.The second half continued in a similar fashion with Suso and Lapadula trying their luck from range.

Milan had a great chance to draw level on the hour when Skorupski made a hash of a Lapadula effort and clumsily felled Pasalic. However, the goalkeeper kept out Suso's penalty with his foot low to his left and made a fine stop from Lapadula's follow up effort.

Montella threw on Bacca in a bid to find the equaliser and a scrappy corner fell kindly to him three yards from goal, but he could not sort out his feet and fluffed his shot. And Empoli were 2-0 ahead in the 67th minute.

Veteran Massimo Maccarone brilliantly cushioned a header into Thiam's path and the forward stayed onside to emphatically hammer home on the half volley. Milan quickly hit back when Lapadula picked up the ball on the right of the area, shuffled onto his left foot and placed his shot low into the far corner.

In a frantic finish, Donnarumma made a brilliant one-on-one stop to deny Maccarone, while at the other end Lucas Ocampos - who had earlier seen claims for a penalty for handball against Andres Tello waved away - smashed the crossbar for Milan, who fell short in their bid to earn a point.
