Inter 1 Sassuolo 2: Vecchi unable to inspire lacklustre Nerazzurri

    inter-cropped_1q3vf1u34tq9n1nlx3cnbpw4m7.jpg

Inter's hopes of Europa League qualification took a huge blow as Pietro Iemmello's double sealed a 2-1 Serie A victory for Sassuolo at San Siro.Seven games without a win saw the Inter hierarchy relieve head coach Stefano Pioli of his duties in midweek, with Stefano Vecchi taking over as caretaker until the end of the season.

With four points separating Inter and sixth-placed AC Milan, who occupy the final Europa League qualification spot, Inter desperately needed a victory to apply the pressure to their city rivals.

Despite a promising start, Vecchi failed to improve on Pioli's efforts, with Inter's most prominent ultra group - the Curva Nord - having all vacated their seats in protest by the time Iemmello put Sassuolo ahead 36 minutes in.

Iemmello doubled his tally of Serie A goals for the campaign five minutes after the restart and, though Eder's 70th-minute effort set up a grandstand finale, Inter failed to find a leveller.

Inter's fourth consecutive defeat leaves them planted in eighth place with two games remaining, while Sassuolo made it six matches unbeaten in Serie A.Ivan Perisic squandered two opportunities inside the opening six minutes as Inter looked to get Vecchi's second temporary spell in charge off to the ideal start.

Despite their positive early play, Inter did not force a save out of Andrea Consigli until the 20th minute, with Sassuolo's goalkeeper doing well to tip Mauro Icardi's curling strike wide.

Consigli did brilliantly to deny the Argentine again before the half hour, lunging across to ensure Icardi could only head against the upright after latching onto a loose ball at the back post.

Inter were then punished for not taking their chances, as Jeison Murillo allowed Stefano Sensi to feed Domenico Berardi, who in turn teed up Iemmello to fire a precise first-time finish into the bottom-right corner.

Lifelong Inter fan Berardi should have had another assist on the stroke of half time, only for Francesco Acerbi to head wide from the winger's sublime cross.Eder's half-time introduction almost proved a masterstroke from the restart, as the former Sampdoria man drew a fine save out of Consigli with his first touch.

Iemmello would have then got on the scoresheet again if not for an impressive stop from Samir Handanovic, but Sassuolo's striker did have his second moments later.
Pol Lirola charged into the area down the right, supplying a neat cross that Iemmello nudged home into a gaping net.

Inter responded well, with Eder looking sharp, and it was the substitute who finally crafted an opening, engineering space for himself in the area before unleashing a low strike that cannoned in off Berardi.

Eder's strike set up a dramatic conclusion, but Sassuolo held firm to withstand a glut of pressure and put a severe dint in Inter's hopes of a top-six finish.

Crystal Palace 4 Hull City 0: Zaha, Benteke on target to send Tigers down to Championship

    christian-benteke-cropped_1cte52j1jmiop18gon4tj1cy68.jpg

Hull City's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed on Sunday as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

First-half goals from Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke, a Luka Milivojevic penalty and a late Patrick van Aanholt strike secured the win for the home side to guarantee their survival, and that of Swansea City, while condemning Hull to a return to the Championship.

Marco Silva's side realistically needed a win to keep their fight to stay up going until the final round of matches, with Swansea's win over Sunderland on Saturday leaving them four points adrift of safety and with a far worse goal difference.

Their hopes took a huge blow after just three minutes, however, as Zaha pounced on Andrea Ranocchia's mistake to put Palace in front, before Benteke's powerful header doubled the lead before the break.

Youngster Jarrod Bowen had a clear chance to grab a lifeline on the hour mark but Wayne Hennessey did not have a save to make in the Palace goal, and Milivojevic's spot-kick and Van Aanholt's close-range effort made certain that Sam Allardyce's record of never being relegated from the top flight remains intact.Hull, however, will join Middlesbrough and Sunderland in dropping down to the Championship for next season.

Hull kept a first away clean sheet in six attempts in their last game on the road against Southampton, but they found themselves behind with only three minutes played in the sunshine of south London.

Ranocchia swung a foot to clear the ball following a Michael Dawson header but completely missed his kick, allowing Zaha to race into the penalty area and slot the ball confidently beneath Eldin Jakupovic.

Palace spirits were suddenly soaring and James Tomkins nearly made it 2-0 after 10 minutes, nodding the ball narrowly wide after meeting Jason Puncheon's cross from the right at the far post.

Hull appeared not to learn the lesson from that warning, though, and Benteke doubled the lead 11 minutes before half-time after running unchallenged to power a header down and into the net from Puncheon's corner.

Puncheon had earlier been fortunate not to concede a penalty after deflecting a Kamil Grosicki free-kick behind for a corner with his hand, and it seemed that luck was firmly against Silva's side when, minutes into the second half, the injured Harry Maguire had to be replaced after Ranocchia and Andy Robertson had already been substituted at half-time.

Bowen was one of those attacking replacements and he missed a golden chance to halve the deficit on 61 minutes, miscuing a half-volley from a Sam Clucas cross from the left with the goal at his mercy at the far post.

The visitors enjoyed 74 per cent of the possession in the second half as Palace dropped deep to preserve their advantage, but they rarely looked likely to add to their meagre total of 36 league goals for the season.Benteke skewed a promising chance for a third wide but it proved to be of little consequence.

Dawson brought down Jeffrey Schlupp as he raced into the area on the counter-attack, allowing Milivojevic to dispatch the penalty in confident fashion with just five minutes of normal time left.

And as the clock ticked into injury time, James McArthur capitalised on some uncertain defending to slide the ball through to the unmarked Van Aanholt, who slotted the ball beneath Jakupovic as the home fans began to celebrate in earnest.

Penalty pain for Hull as relegated Tigers set Premier League record

    michael-dawson-cropped_pd88ntlmrbt61h6c2rzshap2v.jpg

Hull City set a new record for conceding penalties in the Premier League as they suffered relegation at the hands of Crystal Palace.Marco Silva's side slipped to a 4-0 defeat at Selhurst Park that ensured they will return to the Championship after only one season back in the top flight.

Goals from Wilfried Zaha, Christian Benteke, Luka Milivojevic and Patrick van Aanholt secured the victory and guaranteed Palace's survival under manager Sam Allardyce.

To make matters worse for Hull, Michael Dawson's foul on Jeffrey Schlupp with five minutes of normal time left saw them concede a penalty for the 13th time this term – a record for a club in a single Premier League campaign in England.
Milivojevic converted before Van Aanholt ensured another milestone was met in south London, with his 90th-minute goal the 1,000th scored in the Premier League in 2016-17.

West Ham 0 Liverpool 4: Coutinho stars as Klopp's men run riot

    coutinho-cropped_1aat56xnac6kb17cs7t6ab8u4o.jpg

Liverpool took a huge step towards Champions League qualification as goals from Daniel Sturridge – on his first Premier League start since January – and the magnificent Philippe Coutinho helped them claim a comprehensive 4-0 victory at West Ham.

Sturridge had not started a top-flight match for Jurgen Klopp's side since featuring in a 2-2 draw with Sunderland on January 2, but displayed the clinical edge Liverpool have at times lacked in front of goal with a superb run and finish midway through the first half at London Stadium.

Prior to Sturridge's strike, it was Reds who had gone closest to opening the scoring when Joel Matip's header struck the woodwork, though the visitors were fortunate that Andre Ayew did not restore parity on the cusp of half-time.

Ayew's poor finishing was duly punished, Coutinho taking matters into his own hands with two terrific solo efforts in the space of four second-half minutes, although the second one came with a hint of controversy.

Georginio Wijnaldum, who had hit the crossbar in the build-up to Liverpool's second goal, clearly handled in his own area – inflicting injury on Winston Reid in the process – but referee Neil Swarbrick played on, with Coutinho netting 21 seconds later.

Divock Origi added a fourth late on as Liverpool ran riot to seal a win that represents the perfect response to Saturday's victories for top-four rivals Manchester City and Arsenal and moves the Reds up to third, while a difficult debut season at London Stadium for West Ham came to a dismal end.

Sam Byram should have put the hosts ahead seven minutes in, but the defender skewed wide at the culmination of a slick counter-attack.Liverpool wasted no time in responding as Matip got free from Coutinho's corner only for the crossbar to come to West Ham's rescue.

Klopp's men did have the lead 10 minutes prior to the interval, though.
Coutinho picked up possession in Liverpool's half and slid a sublime throughball into Sturridge who, after beating the offside trap and rounding Adrian, made no mistake with a neat finish.

West Ham were presented with the ideal opportunity to level matters just prior to the interval, but Ayew somehow managed to twice hit the post from point-blank range.

Wijnaldum thought he had extended Liverpool's lead before the hour with an audacious volley that rattled off the frame of the goal, but Coutinho made sure as, after picking up the loose ball, he capitalised on hapless defending to fire in from the edge of the area.

And the result was put beyond all doubt soon after when officials failed to halt play for what appeared to be a head injury sustained by Reid and Liverpool countered, with Coutinho keeping his composure to thump in his second.

Origi was the next Liverpool player to hit the woodwork, but the Belgian got his goal with 14 minutes remaining, tucking home from close range to add further gloss to a one-sided scoreline.

Tottenham 2 Manchester United 1: Wanyama and Kane clinch second spot in final game at White Hart Lane

    harry-kane-cropped_1esdfhwp46b49zzos7cuh9agh.jpg

Tottenham beat Manchester United 2-1 courtesy of goals from Victor Wanyama and Harry Kane to clinch second spot in the Premier League in their final game at White Hart Lane.

Spurs say farewell to their home ground at the end of the season after 118 years and made sure they leave the Lane on a high, Wanyama beating David de Gea with a strong header early on before Kane doubled their lead after the interval with his first goal against United. Wayne Rooney pulled one back with 20 minutes left, but there would be no comeback as Spurs held on for the win.

Sunday's defeat means United are now out of the race for a top-four finish with two games to go, although Jose Mourinho has been quite vocal in recent weeks that Europa League success is their main priority.Indeed, the Portuguese made eight changes to the team that saw off Celta Vigo on Thursday to reach the final against Ajax in Stockholm on May 24.

Mourinho will not be overly pleased with how his side's fringe players performed, however, and he could very well decide to shuffle his line-up again when they take on Southampton on Wednesday, with Crystal Palace awaiting next week in their final league game before the clash with the Eredivisie giants.

Spurs got off to a great start and needed just six minutes to open the scoring via Wanyama. Ben Davies curled in a pinpoint cross from the left after Christian Eriksen's corner and the Kenya international rose above his marker before beating goalkeeper De Gea with a strong header.

Anthony Martial came close to levelling in the 18th minute after outmuscling Toby Alderweireld on the edge of the area, but the former Monaco star was unfortunate to see his curled effort go inches wide at the far post.

The home side remained well on top, though, and created a number of chances to double their lead. Son Heung-min fired straight at De Gea after a good run through the middle, Kane saw his header after a corner skim the crossbar, while Dele Alli was denied by the United goalkeeper as well.

But there was no denying Mauricio Pochettino's men after the break and it was Kane who made it 2-0 with a clever finish, poking the ball past De Gea from close range after shrugging off Chris Smalling.

Mourinho brought on Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ander Herrera in an attempt to turn things around and United pulled one back in the 71st minute, Rooney finding the net with a clever finish after some good work from Martial down the left.

Alli was then unfortunate not to add a third when Phil Jones headed his shot off the line before Marcus Rashford aimed just wide in the dying moments of the game as it ended 2-1.

:frown::oo:Mourinho: Manchester United don't want to play Premier League games right now

    jose-mourinho-man-utd-2017_12aa7nvd8x87y186tvj8ltdvey.jpg

Jose Mourinho is adamant he had no other option but to play a weakened side against Tottenham as he feels Manchester United lack the strength in depth to fight in two competitions.

The United boss made eight changes to the team that saw off Celta Vigo in the Europa League on Thursday to set up a final against Ajax on May 24, and saw his side beaten 2-1 to end their top-four hopes.

United now need to beat Ajax in Stockholm to secure Champions League football for 2017-18, but Mourinho has stressed he did not gamble by throwing in the towel domestically."When people say we gambled by going to Europa League, we did not gamble," Mourinho told Sky Sports."You cannot play two big competitions with 15 players. It was compulsory.

"The ones that needed to play 90 mins got to play, we got no injuries. At the moment, the Premier League matches are the ones we do not want to play.

"I do not want to think about next season - I want to think about the final we have to play in."United put in an underwhelming performance at White Hart Lane, but Mourinho was nonetheless pleased with what he saw. "After 2-0 we had to bring a bit more quality to the team, we brought more balance," Mourinho added.

"We put players back in the right positions."I am happy, I am fine with what we had in terms of individual performances."The two goals conceded were bad."

Real Betis 1 Atletico Madrid 1: Scrappy Savic strike secures share of the spoils

    atletico-cropped_mpibox9tuf781nw6dpmkynmxm.jpg

A groggy Atletico Madrid appeared to be suffering from a Champions League hangover as they returned to LaLiga action with a 1-1 draw at Real Betis.

Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Real Madrid was not enough for Diego Simeone's side to reach a third European final in four years as a 3-0 first-leg deficit proved too much to overcome.Atletico barely laid a glove on their hosts at the Benito Villamarin and Dani Ceballos' thunderbolt had given Betis a deserved lead in the second half.

However, Stefan Savic hit back with a goal as scrappy as Atletico's performance to snatch a share of the spoils that was barely warranted.

The draw, matched with Sevilla's defeat at Real Madrid, wraps up third place for Simeone's side for a fourth season out of five, but the gap to second has stretched from two points last season to 12, which could worry the Argentine, who is reportedly a target for the Inter job.

Perhaps still struggling to overcome the emotion of Wednesday's disappointment, Atletico turned in one of their most sluggish performances of the season in the first half.

Betis legend Joaquin slammed into the side netting before neatly flicking into the path of Darko Brasanac, who lashed a half-volley across the face of Jan Oblak's goal.

At the other end, attack after attack broke down with a sloppy Atletico pass and the goal of Antonio Adan went entirely untroubled in the first 45 minutes, while visiting frustrations were deepened when stalwart full-back Filipe Luis picked up a booking that rules him out of the final league game at the Vicente Calderon next week.

Betis youngster Ceballos, meanwhile, was at the heart of everything good about the game and was unfortunate to see his swiping effort rebound off the post and drift across the goal line before running out of play.

But he put his name on the score sheet in stunning fashion in the 57th minute when a corner was cleared to Ceballos 25 yards from goal and a first-time volley was too much for Oblak to handle and the Atletico keeper shovelled the ball into the net.

Yannick Carrasco finally drew a save from Adan shortly after the goal, but Simeone saw fit to make changes and introduced Nico Gaitan and Fernando Torres for Kevin Gameiro and Filipe Luis.

Despite the attacking switch, it was a pair of defenders who got Atletico back into the game as Lucas Hernandez flicked Saul Niguez's free-kick into the danger area and Savic prodded home as Betis furiously waited for an offside flag to be raised.

And the home mood was hardly helped as Oblak produced an astonishing stretching save to deny substitute Alvaro Cejudo from eight yards out before somehow punching Rafa Navarro's 35-yard drive between two waiting Betis poachers.

However, there was satisfaction in the air at full-time, as the hosts snapped the three-game losing run that had cost head coach Victor Sanchez his job.

Las Palmas 1 Barcelona 4: Neymar hat-trick keeps pressure on Madrid

    neymar-cropped_lcqeeoxge4cj1dc94bnzs768o.jpg

A Neymar hat-trick ensured Barcelona kept the pressure firmly on Real Madrid in the LaLiga title race with a 4-1 victory over Las Palmas that keeps Luis Enrique's side top of the table.

The Spanish giants are locked together on 87 points after Sunday's clashes – Madrid beating Sevilla by the same scoreline at the Santiago Bernabeu – but the capital club remain favourites owing to their game in hand.Given Madrid's advantage, Barca needed to take all three points in Gran Canaria and goals from Neymar and Luis Suarez got them off to the flying start.

Lionel Messi was denied a third by a Mauricio Lemos block and Barca saw their lead halved when Pedro Bigas started and finished a flowing move after 63 minutes.

The hosts' hopes of a comeback were dashed soon after, though, as Neymar restored Barca's advantage before completing his hat-trick with a neat finish under Javi Varas.

Victory means Barca must beat Eibar on the final day and hope Madrid lose to either Celta Vigo – their game in hand – or Malaga to be crowned champions, Luis Enrique's side having a better head-to-head record should they remain level on points.

Barca – who lost Javier Mascherano to injury in the warm-up – could have been ahead inside six minutes as Messi played a smart ball across the Las Palmas six-yard box, but Suarez was unable to convert at the back post.

The visitors were then lucky not to be reduced 10 men as Lucas Digne dragged back Jese Rodriguez, the defender only shown yellow much to the relief of Luis Enrique. With the half-hour mark approaching Las Palmas' resolve was finally broken, as Suarez and Neymar combined to score two quick-fire goals.

Suarez laid the first on a plate for Neymar to tap into an unguarded net and the Brazilian returned the favour moments later with a sumptuous pass for the Uruguayan. In behind the Las Palmas defence, Suarez made no mistake as he deftly lifted the ball over the advancing Varas.

Their advantage should have been three just before the hour as Messi played a neat one-two with Jordi Alba, but the Argentina international saw his shot – which looked destined for the top corner – blocked by Lemos.

Having survived that danger Las Palmas got back into the match as Bigas netted his fourth of the season, the defender intercepting in his own penalty area before surging forward to convert Kevin-Prince Boateng's low cross.Thoughts of a turnaround were quickly banished when Neymar completed his hat-trick with two goals in four minutes.

His second of the night came as he headed home Ivan Rakitic's cross at the back post, the 25-year-old grateful Suarez's lunge at the ball from an offside position failed to connect.

And he was soon celebrating his treble as he latched onto a beautifully weighted pass from Alba and rolled the ball underneath Varas to complete a comprehensive victory, with Barca now hoping for a favour from Celta Vigo, who face Madrid on Wednesday.

Real Madrid 4 Sevilla 1: Ronaldo surpasses landmark to boost title hopes

    cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_1t8m82nbfp49s134rnlio1do2m.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo brought up another landmark to help Real Madrid take a huge step towards a first LaLiga title since 2012 with a 4-1 win over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeu.

With top-flight and European glory still a possibility for Zinedine Zidane's side, victory over a team who beat them in January's reverse fixture boosted their double hopes as Ronaldo surpassed 400 goals for Real Madrid.

The opener, which arrived after 10 minutes, had more than a hint of controversy about it as Nacho – in as one of five changes from the Champions League semi-final second-leg loss to Atletico Madrid – stroked home a quick free-kick as Sevilla were busying themselves arranging a defensive wall.Jorge Sampaoli and his team were furious with referee Alberto Undiano, who waved away their protests as Nacho celebrated just his third LaLiga goal.

After Stevan Jovetic had struck the post, the hosts moved further ahead when Ronaldo tapped in from James Rodriguez's saved effort.Jovetic also hit the crossbar and was thwarted by Keylor Navas before the break, but finally got his reward by pulling a goal back four minutes into the second half.

However, Zidane's men – aided by the introduction of Casemiro, who provided a steadying influence – wrapped it up late on through Ronaldo's stunning strike, with Toni Kroos' goal putting the seal on three crucial points with title rivals Barcelona beating Las Palmas by the same score.

In the fifth meeting between these two sides this season, Vitolo tested Navas with an early low strike that the goalkeeper spilled before gathering at the second attempt.

Opposite number Sergio Rico also had a heart-in-mouth moment when he was slow to react to Alvaro Morata darting in behind the defence, but he recovered to smother at the forward's feet. The young goalkeeper was oblivious to Nacho's quick-thinking set-piece soon after, though, as Madrid moved in front.

ovetic's powerful first-time shot rattled Navas' left-hand upright in the 20th minute to send a timely reminder of the visitors' threat. But they were the architects of their own downfall for the second, as Matias Kranevitter conceded possession on halfway, with James darting into the area and seeing his shot palmed into the path of a gleeful Ronaldo.

Madrid were almost made to pay for a lapse in concentration at the back when Jovetic lifted a chip onto the crossbar, with Navas rooted to the spot.

Remarkably Jovetic still had time to see another chance go begging before half-time, with Navas – rather than the frame of his goal – keeping out the former Manchester City striker this time.

Madrid had clearly failed to heed Jovetic's three warning shots and early in the second half he found the net with a cool finish from Vitolo's lay-off.With an air of angst suddenly falling over the Bernabeu, Casemiro was brought on to add some defensive solidity to the hosts' midfield and it did help to stem the tide.

It was not until 20 minutes into the second half that Rico was forced into a save, with Ronaldo's free-kick from an acute angle sending the keeper flying to his left.
The tension was lifted when Ronald sent a superb left-footed strike beyond Rico with 12 minutes remaining and Kroos turned in from close range soon after to add gloss, with Madrid knowing a win in their game in hand against Celta Vigo on Wednesday will leave them with one hand on the trophy.

Ronaldo equals Jimmy Greaves record as all-time top European scorer

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_rb1b9ehbpqa01xedk1jpp9e8o.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo is on the brink of history after scoring twice on Sunday to tie with Jimmy Greaves as the all-time top scorer in Europe's five biggest leagues.

His first goal in Sunday's win against Sevilla, his 400th strike for Real Madrid, tied him with Gerd Muller for second. His second pushed him past the German legend and level with Greaves.

Ronaldo's next goal will put him at 367, one more than the Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur legend amassed over 14 years playing in England and Italy. Ronaldo scored 84 Premier League goals for Manchester United before signing with Real Madrid and adding 282 league goals and counting to that total.

Lionel Messi lurks behind as the highest-ranked active player behind Ronaldo. The Barcelona goalscorer has found the back of the net 346 times since his 2004 debut. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the next active player on the list, with his 268 goals putting him at 11th. His goals in England, Spain, Italy and France make him the only player in the top 20 to score in three or more leagues.

Ronaldo could find himself alone at the top of the chart as soon as Wednesday when Madrid travel to face Celta Vigo in Liga action.

Roma 3 Juventus 1: Bianconeri forced to wait for Serie A title

    romajuve-cropped_v00q2fkmtrqu1aiy8usg6byho.jpg

Juventus will have to wait another week to claim an historic sixth successive Serie A title after Roma ran out 3-1 winners at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.

Having failed to clinch the Scudetto by being held to a 1-1 draw against city rivals Torino last weekend, Juve were denied the point they needed for glory by second-half goals from Stephan El Shaarawy and Radja Nainggolan.

The former AC Milan forward only started after top scorer Edin Dzeko sustained a calf injury, but he made his selection count in the 56th minute when he found the bottom corner with a shot that deflected wickedly off Leonardo Bonucci.

Nainggolan made sure of the win with a thunderous effort nine minutes later, leaving Juve to turn their attention to Wednesday’s Coppa Italia final against Lazio back on this ground to secure the first leg of a possible treble. Their third opportunity to clinch the Scudetto comes next weekend at home to relegation-threatened Crotone.

Things looked good for Juve when Mario Lemina - in as one of six changes from the side that booked a place in the Champions League final with a 2-1 win against Monaco on Tuesday - struck for the first time this season after 21 minutes.

Roma equalised just four minutes later through Daniele De Rossi, with El Shaarawy and Nainggolan completing the turnaround after the restart to ensure Luciano Spalletti’s side held onto second position after Napoli’s 5-0 win at Torino earlier in the day.Roma showed plenty of attacking intent from kick-off but could have found themselves behind as early as the seventh minute.

A corner by Miralem Pjanic – roundly jeered on his first match against his former side in the capital – was only cleared as far as Kwadwo Asamoah, who cracked a searing 20-yard drive against the upright.

Roma did not heed the warning and Juve did go in front 14 minutes later as Gonzalo Higuain showed a sublime touch to square Stefano Sturaro's excellent pass over the top for Lemina to tap home.

Roma did not take long to equalise, though. Gianluigi Buffon did well to keep out Kostas Manolas' header and a follow-up effort from De Rossi, but the Giallorossi captain was quick to react and fire into the roof of the net at the second time of asking.

There were chances for both teams to add to their tally, Wojciech Szczesny keeping out a fierce strike by Higuain before Mohamed Salah's free header was comfortably held by Buffon.

Juve appeared in control but were stunned 11 minutes after the restart. A quick free-kick was worked to El Shaarawy on the left and his tame right-footed effort took a nick off Bonucci and somehow span beyond the helpless Buffon.

Allegri sent Dani Alves on for Stephan Lichtsteiner to give his side more of an attacking threat but the Brazilian was guilty of playing Nainggolan onside as the Belgian rifled a fierce shot past Buffon at his near post.

Paulo Dybala replaced Sturaro in an attacking switch from Allegri and he headed wide, Bonucci following suit as the clock ticked down. With Roma in a celebratory mood Francesco Totti, believed to be retiring at the end of the season, replaced Salah in the 93rd minute.Higuain was kept out by the legs of Szczesny to ensure there were no such scenes of revelry for Juve as their wait to make history continues.

Monaco 4 Lille 0: Falcao and Silva all but seal Ligue 1 title

Monaco all but sealed the Ligue 1 title as Radamel Falcao scored twice to give them an impressive 4-0 home victory over Lille.

Paris Saint-Germain's 5-0 win over Saint-Etienne means Leonardo Jardim's side have not officially been crowned champions, but the leaders are three points clear with a game in hand and have a goal difference which is greater by 17.

Monaco face Saint-Etienne on Wednesday knowing a draw will formally give them the title, but this win has in effect sealed Ligue 1 glory and the club's first title since the 1999-00 season as PSG have only one game remaining. Falcao headed in early on and Bernardo Silva's strike just before half-time was Monaco's 100th goal in their remarkable league season.

A rampant Falcao struck again in the second half to move onto 21 top-flight goals this season and ensure his side have won 10 straight league games - a run that has proven decisive in their bid for glory - with Junior Alonso's own goal putting the icing on the cake.

Jardim made two changes to Monaco's side and it was one of the players brought in, Thomas Lemar, who created the opener after six minutes.Lemar whipped in a first-time cross from the left and Falcao was somehow left unmarked to plant home a simple header from six yards.

Lille tried to respond when Naim Sliti latched on to Eder's flick on and saw his shot saved by Danijel Subasic and the Tunisia international later tested the home goalkeeper again with a powerful drive.Monaco should have gone two goals up when stretching defender Jemerson only managed to send Silva's inswinging cross over the crossbar.

But Monaco did extend their lead in first-half stoppage time, Silva producing a simple finish after superb work from Kylian Mbappe, who tormented defender Franck Beria with a twisting run and laid it on a plate for his team-mate.Jemerson sent a blistering volley just wide just after the break while Subasic had to tip over from Youssouf Kone's cross-shot at the other end.

Monaco made sure of the points with a superb team move after 69 minutes, Mbappe's volleyed pass from the right being expertly converted by Falcao's first-time, left-footed finish.

Djibril Sidibe dragged wide from a great late chance given to him by Silva's superb pass, while Subasic made a superb save to keep out a free-kick from Lille's Fares Bahlouli.

By that point Monaco supporters were already singing in celebration of their now inevitable title success after giving substituted star of the show Falcao a standing ovation.

But there was still time for a fourth from the hosts with one minute left, Lemar racing clear down the left and crossing towards substitute Valere Germain, only for Alonso to divert the ball past his own goalkeeper in attempting to clear.

Real Madrid overtake Bayern Munich to set European record

Real Madrid overtook Bayern Munich to set a European record in their La Liga victory over Sevilla on Sunday.

When Nacho Fernandez found the net against the Andalusians at the Bernabeu after just 10 minutes, Madrid became the first ever team from Europe's top five leagues to score in 62 consecutive games in all competitions.

The Blancos would go on to win the game 4-1, with Cristiano Ronaldo seizing the headlines for bagging his 400th and 401st goals for the club - meaning he is now level with Jimmy Greaves in the all-time top scorer list.
Zinedine Zidane's side moved level with Bayern when Isco found the net against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg last week.
They were last held scoreless by Manchester City in the Champions League last April.

Guardiola lauds Zabaleta as Manchester City great

Pep Guardiola has heralded outgoing full-back Pablo Zabaleta as one of the most important players in Manchester City history.

City announced late on Saturday that Zabaleta had informed the club he will leave when his contract expires next month, bringing down the curtain on a celebrated nine-year spell in Manchester.

An unheralded signing from Espanyol in August 2008, shortly before Sheikh Mansour's takeover drastically altered City's fortunes, Zabaleta made his Premier League debut alongside showpiece signing Robinho in a 3-1 defeat to Chelsea the following month. But it was the tough-tackling Argentinian who would go on to firmly establish himself as a fans' favourite thanks to numerous all-action displays.

A pivotal member of the title-winning sides of 2011-12 and 2013-14, Zabaleta also collected an FA Cup winners' medal and two EFL Cups during the club's resurgence as a trophy-winning force this decade.

Despite being reduced to a more marginal role under the current manager, the 32-year-old's significance is not lost on Guardiola ahead of what is likely to be an emotional farewell to the Etihad Stadium against West Brom on Tuesday.

"Hopefully all the fans can come to support us – we play for a lot of important things – and to express gratitude for one of the most important players in the history of Manchester City," said the former Barcelona boss, before acknowledging Zabaleta will be tough to replace over the course of what promises to be a busy close season.

"I have a lot of respect for people players and managers who do what they do for a lot of time. Nine years here is incredible and to replace that you need someone to stay here nine years."His impact here was amazing. He was one of the first players [of the current squad] to come here and he has helped the club to where it is right now."

That transformation, to which Zabaleta has been integral, means a trophy-less season and a battle to secure Champions League qualification running into the final week of the campaign must be considered a disappointment at City.

Victory will all but assure they retain their spot in Europe's elite competition for a seventh consecutive season, but Guardiola expects no favours from a Baggies side who made Chelsea work hard for a title-clinching 1-0 win at The Hawthorns last Friday.

"They are professionals, they will play to win," he added."Tony Pulis' teams don't play thinking it doesn't matter. It's a real final for us, and we are going to be ready."John Stones is poised to return from an adductor problem that has sidelined him for the past five weeks, although Guardiola does not expect midfielder Fabian Delph to feature again this season due to a leg injury.
