Coutinho planning Champions League run with Liverpool

    coutinho-liverpool_1fzu4ntoaqsrm1j3o371unr6yb.jpg

Philippe Coutinho has dropped the biggest hint yet that he is ready to turn down overtures from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich.

The Brazilian continues to see his future at Anfield called into question, despite being settled in his current surroundings and having committed to a new long-term contract in January. That deal is intended to keep him at the club until at least 2022, by which time Coutinho will be approaching his 30th birthday.

"Speculations are for journalists only," he told ESPN Brazil after the win over Middlesbrough. "I've got a long contract with Liverpool."The whole team is playing well, today was a very important victory, next season it’s the Champions League."

He has netted 14 times across all competitions for the Reds this season, with a personal best 13 of those efforts coming in Premier League fixtures.

It is those exploits which have attracted the likes of Barca and Bayern to his services, but Liverpool have no intention of selling and the man himself appears to have no desire to consider a change of scenery.

:shocked:Ajax sensation Dolberg breaks fan's arm with wayward shot

    kasper-dolberg-ajax-vs-lyon_1u8b4kdlaxawq1jvfm2vzmzb3c.jpg

Kasper Dolberg has hit the target 23 times this season, but one wayward warm-up effort saw the Danish striker break a supporter’s wrist. The 19-year-old has starred for Ajax in 2016-17, earning him widespread acclaim and reports of interest from Manchester United.

Dolberg will lock horns with the Red Devils in the Europa League final on Wednesday, with his Dutch club looking to him for inspiration in the final third.

He has provided that on numerous occasions since breaking through in Amsterdam, but did end up sending an unfortunate fan to casualty on his last appearance against Willem II after firing a wild pre-match shot into the stands.Stijn Udo, the supporter in question, explained to AT5: "It was going very fast. The ball hit my wrist very hard.

"At half-time, I went to the first aiders, they gave me a bag of ice, but I did not want to miss the match. Ajax could have become champions!“After the match, I went to the hospital. First I thought it was a bruise, but after taking x-rays, it turned out that I broke my wrist in two places."

Ajax have offered their apologies to Udo and intend to reward his loyal support in some way, although tickets to Wednesday’s Europa League clash in Stockholm may be a little optimistic.

"They will send me a little something, but I do not know what yet,” added Udo.“Two tickets for the final on Wednesday? Yes, that would be nice, though it will be difficult because I cannot drive with my wrist."

Ajax beat Willem II 3-1, with Dolberg among the scorers, but they missed out on the Eredivisie title by one point to Feyenoord.

Clichy confirms he will leave Man City

    premier-league-team-of-the-week-gael-clichy_5osbntxje45r165g08gxyix4k.jpg

Gael Clichy has confirmed that he will leave Manchester City when his contract expires this summer. The French left-back, who signed for the club in 2011, is one of seven senior players whose deals are up in July.

Pablo Zabaleta is the only other of those to have officially announced that he is leaving, and he was honoured with an emotional send-off following City's final home game of the season last week.

But now Clichy has told fans at an exclusive screening of 93:20, a City-made documentary about Sergio Aguero's league title-winning goal in 2012, that he will not be signing a new deal.During a Q&A session with supporters, he was asked if he would be playing with Joe Hart next season.

Hart is on loan at Torino and City are looking to find a permanent buyer this summer, and Clichy made clear he would not play alongside the England international even if Pep Guardiola had a shock change of heart over the goalkeeper.

"It's hard," he said. "I'm not sure whether or not Joe will be here next season, and I won't be here next season."City are in the market for full-backs this summer and are keen admirers of Monaco's Benjamin Mendy and Juventus' Alex Sandro.

As well as Clichy and Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna, Willy Caballero, Jesus Navas, Yaya Toure and Tosin Adarabioyo are out of contract this summer.Goal understands Sagna will follow his fellow full-backs out of the door, along with Caballero.

Navas has been offered a one-year extension but has also held talks over a return to boyhood club Sevilla on a three-year deal.Adarabioyo has agreed terms on a new contract, however, while Toure appears likely to be offered another year-long deal.

Conte named LMA Manager of the Year

    antonio-conte-chelsea_i3mkxcuze3em1q7kadawkot8u.jpg

Antonio Conte has been rewarded for his efforts in leading Chelsea to the Premier League title with the League Managers' Association (LMA) Manager of the Year award. The Italian has made an instant impact since arriving at Stamford Bridge following the end of Euro 2016.

In his first season in the Premier League he spearheaded a dominant title challenge, with Chelsea eventually winning the title by seven points over closest rivals Tottenham.

And he has been honoured with the prestigious LMA award at the Association's annual dinner, determined by votes from managers across the league pyramid.

It is the second time in as many years that an Italian has taken the gong, with Claudio Ranieri winning last time round in recognition of his work taking Leicester City to a thrilling title. It completed a double night of celebration for Conte, who also won the Premier League Manager Year of the Prize earlier in the evening.

Chelsea took a mammoth 93 points over their 38 games, losing just five times over the course of the season to stroll to Premier League success.

Conte could also complete the double if his side manages to down Arsenal in the FA Cup final.Brighton and Hove Albion's Chris Hughton received the prize in the Championship as he took the Seagulls back to the top flight for the first time in 34 years. There were also awards for Paul Cook of Portsmouth and Sheffield United's Chris Wilder, who won in League Two and One respectively for 2016-17.

Lincoln City's Danny Cowley, meanwhile, received a Special Achievement award after the non-league side battled through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup in a thrilling run that was eventually ended by Arsenal as well as winning the National League.

:shocked:'It's a sad day for Manchester' - Football world reacts as 19 killed in suspected UK terror attack

    manchester-arena-concertgoers_z051r2bglg0f1n0fuqkvwwf16.jpg

At least 19 people have been confirmed as killed in a suspected terror attack in Manchester, UK, late on Monday night, and the football world has begun to mourn the tragic loss of life.

In addition to numerous fatalities, police claim over 50 people were injured when an explosion hit outside the Manchester Arena following an Ariana Grande gig.The likes of local club Manchester City, its captain Vincent Kompany and England football legend Gary Lineker took to social media to express sympathy and support for the victims of the tragedy.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) released a statement in the early hours of Tuesday morning explaining that it is treating the incident as a terrorist attack, although that's a working hypothesis with details remaining thin on the ground.

"Just before 22:35 on Monday May 22, 2017, police were called to reports of an explosion at Manchester Arena," the GMP statement reads."So far 19 people have been confirmed dead, with around 50 others injured. This is currently being treated as a terrorist incident until police know otherwise."

UK Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the incident, saying: "We are working to establish the full details of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist attack."All our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those who have been affected."

All political parties will suspend campaigning ahead of the of next month's General Election for what will be a period of national mourning.

The Manchester Arena is in the city centre of the north-west UK, two miles north of Manchester United's Old Trafford and two miles west of Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

Although initial reports suggested the explosion happened in the foyer, Manchester Arena released a statement in the aftermath claiming the explosion happened outside as an estimated 21,000 people left the concert just after 22:30
"We can confirm there was an incident as people were leaving the Ariana Grande show last night," it said.

"The incident took place outside the venue in a public space. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims."

Mata seeks 'double bonus' of silverware and Champions League place

    juan-mata_130fvl8f55xlh12u6davvqmxsb.jpg

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata is excited by the prospect of securing a "double bonus" against Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday – a piece of silverware and a direct route back into the glamour of the Champions League.

The Dutch giants stand in the way of Jose Mourinho's men and a place in club football's elite competition, with the winners of the Europa League final guaranteed a spot in next season's Champions League.

United fell short of qualifying via a top-four Premier League finish – a 69-point haul leaving them sixth – meaning the Ajax clash assumes extra significance, a fact not lost on Mata.

Mata said in quotes reported by the Telegraph: "The Champions League is the best competition and it's one this club should be playing in every season.

"Now we are playing in the Europa League and if we win it as I did a few years ago [when Chelsea beat Benfica in 2013], it's a double bonus, as it's a trophy and a Champions League spot, so it's very important for us."

United are guaranteed European football next season regardless of how they fare in Sweden in midweek after finishing sixth, but Mata is under no illusions which competition the club should be aiming to be part of.

He said: "[Either way] we still want to play European football. Hopefully it is [in the Champions League on] Tuesday and Wednesdays, instead of Thursdays [in the Europa League], but if it's Thursdays we will play Thursdays and it wouldn't be an excuse not to try to win the title.

"Obviously you don't have as much time for recovery as you should, and we have lived that this season. But I think the club and the money [they have] will help us try to get a bigger squad and prepare for a different competition."

Mourinho offloaded Mata to United when he was Chelsea boss, meaning it was inevitable that speculation of a possible repeat scenario would arise when the Portuguese arrived at Old Trafford. But Mata has featured heavily under Mourinho and has reiterated he is settled at the club.

"Yes, I'm happy here," he said. "I've always said that since I came here it has not been the greatest moment in the club's history. It's been a different approach and a new stage after Alex Ferguson. We've had a few managers, different players coming and going, but I feel really happy to be at this club."

Manchester United cancel Europa League final press conference after attack

    josemourinho-cropped_1qrzx6j2ielzp1jbjv8gcbhpms.jpg

Jose Mourinho will not address the media prior to the Europa League final following the bomb blast in Manchester.

The Portuguese was due to speak at around 1800 local time in Stockholm on Tuesday ahead of Manchester United's game against Ajax at the Friends Arena 24 hours later.

However, United requested the appearance be cancelled and UEFA has agreed in light of the attack which saw 22 people killed and 59 injured following an explosion at the end of an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena on Monday.

The incident is being treated by police as a terror attack, with Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins later confirming that the suspect died at the scene after allegedly detonating an "improvised explosive device".

A UEFA statement read: "Following last night’s attack in Manchester, UEFA has received and accepted an official request from Manchester United not to hold their pre-match press conference, which was scheduled to take place at the Friends Arena in Stockholm this evening.

"Manchester United’s training session at their own Carrington training ground in Manchester will take place as scheduled at 1200 CET."The press conference of Ajax remains scheduled for 1845 CET, followed by an open training sessions at 1930 CET."

United's players held a minute's silence at training as a mark of respect for the victims while the club also released a statement expressing their shock at events in the city and confirming the club's megastore, museum, Red Cafe and stadium tours would be closed for the day.It read: "Everyone at Manchester United is deeply shocked by last night’s terrible events at the Manchester Arena.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected, including our supporters, club staff and members of our community such as the children from our Manchester United Foundation partner schools who were attending the concert at the Arena.

"Club staff are ready to help the police and other emergency services in any way that may be required at this challenging time for our city. "Old Trafford's Megastore, Museum, Red Cafe and Stadium Tour are all closed to the public today."

Earlier, UEFA moved to assure fans who plan to attend the match that heightened security measures have long been in place and urged spectators to arrive early to avoid delays outside the stadium.

"There is currently no specific intelligence which might suggest that any of the UEFA Europa League final activities in Stockholm may be the target of attacks," a statement from European football's governing body read.

"UEFA has been closely working with local authorities and the Swedish FA for many months and the terrorist risk had been taken into account since the very beginning of the project. Furthermore, a number of additional security measures were implemented following the attacks in Stockholm last April."Due to the tight security arrangements, UEFA urges fans to arrive at the stadium as early as possible, as detailed checks will be made at the entrances, resulting in potential delays in accessing the stadium."

President Aleksander Ceferin offered his condolences, adding: "I am deeply saddened by the horrible terrorist attack in Manchester last night. It shocks me that so many innocent people lost their lives and I would like to send my condolences to the families of those affected."

'Man Utd youngster Angel Gomes can be as good as Iniesta'

    angel-gomes-man-utd_6lmibhzh848t1h1ksrkcjatk9.jpg

Former Manchester United youth coach Paul McGuinness believes Angel Gomes has the potential to become a player of similar quality to Barcelona icon Andres Iniesta or Man City string-puller David Silva.

Gomes became the first player born after the turn of the century to feature in the Premier League when he made his United debut as a late substitute in Sunday's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

McGuinness worked with some of the Red Devils' finest during his 23 years at Old Trafford – including the famous Class of '92 – and says the 16-year-old will be able to cut it amongst the world's best.

“He’s a real talent. If he was Brazilian, people would be raving about him and, if he was six inches taller, people would be going mad,” the ex-Utd coach told Sky Sports News.

“I suppose that’s our country. People doubt players if they’re short in stature but no-one is doubting Andres Iniesta or David Silva. He’s got the potential to be that type of player and, in England, you just don’t get many players like that.

“If you play him with better players, he’ll get better himself and create chances for them. You don’t want to build him up too soon but I’m sure they’ll handle all that at United.”

United's injury issues have forced Jose Mourinho's hand into using more and more young players as the season has progressed, with four youngsters making their first Premier League starts against Palace.

Joel Pereira, Demetri Mitchell, Scott McTominay and Josh Harrop all lined up against the Eagles in what ended in victory for United, with the last named finding the net in a win to wrap up an underwhelming league campaign on a high note and give fans a sneak peek at the club's future.

“It was a fantastic achievement for the players and the academy to have all those players on the pitch at once,” McGuinness added. “They’ve beaten a full-strength Crystal Palace team, so they’ve shown great potential there.

“What a fantastic start for Josh Harrop. He is the type that makes things happen and he certainly did that on his debut, scoring a fantastic goal. He’s that type of instinctive player that can open up a defence and make something happen.

“And Scott McTominay, a year or so ago, was six inches smaller. He’s had a massive growth spurt and is now showing real potential.”

Griezmann 'ready to go' as he opens transfer door to Man Utd and Madrid

    antoine-griezmann-atletico-madrid-la-liga_1qe7n9ae5y4li18n58fwphm1tt.jpg

Antoine Griezmann says he is ready to leave Atletico Madrid in order to pursue a dream of winning trophies consistently.

The France international has long been linked with a move to Manchester United or Real Madrid but appeared to commit his future to Atletico last week when he light-heartedly stated that he would only leave to join NBA side the New York Knicks.

However, Griezmann caused a stir on Monday when he said that his chances of moving to Old Trafford this year were a "six out of 10" as talk began to build of a possible world-record offer from the Europa League finalists.

The 26-year-old has followed up those comments by saying that his ambitions could tempt him to leave Atletico in the next transfer window, although their own recruitment drive could yet convince him to stay. The "fashionable" Premier League, the Bundesliga or even the top flights in China and the United States could be appealing, he said.

"We finished third in La Liga. It was the club's objective but the players want more," he said at the release of his autobiography on Tuesday, as quoted by L'Equipe."I want to win trophies. I've come to a point where I play really well and score goals but it's not enough. That's it.

"To win trophies is what I'm going to look for this summer from the moment I decide my future."I reached a final and a semi-final of the Champions League with Atletico. We're close but we're missing something.

"I'll see what the club will do. It depends on transfers. I don't know if they understand but all the players, the media, my family, know that I like football to win trophies, to live strong emotions. I want to taste it.

"If I have to move today it will be no problem. It could be to England because that's fashionable, to Germany, China or the United States. I'm ready to go."Griezmann registered 26 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for Diego Simeone's side in the 2016-17 campaign.

:love:Mourinho: Manchester will pull together as one

    manchesterunited-cropped_193hnpvesq1nn1u5j0duz4zwm1.jpg

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has no doubt the local people will "pull together as one" after Monday's bomb attack in the city.

The blast at Manchester Arena killed 22 people and left 59 injured after a concert by American pop star Ariana Grande and is being treated as a terror attack by local police.

United face Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm on Wednesday and held a minute's silence ahead of their final training session before the match at their Carrington base.

Mourinho's squad travel to Sweden late on Tuesday but have been allowed to forego their pre-match media duties in light of the incident, with UEFA accepting a request from the club.

However, Mourinho did address the bombing and his side's preparations against such a tragic backdrop in a short statement on United's official website."We are all very sad about the tragic events last night; we cannot take out of our minds and our hearts the victims and their families," he said.

"We have a job to do and we will fly to Sweden to do that job. It is a pity we cannot fly with the happiness that we always have before a big game."I know, even during my short time here, that the people of Manchester will pull together as one."

Real Madrid beat Barcelona for €45m wonderkid Vinicius Jr

    viniciusjunior-cropped_6wup8smr697r15m7rhxm8p684.jpg

Real Madrid have completed a deal to sign promising 16-year-old Brazilian Vinicius Junior from Flamengo in a deal that will go through in July 2018, seeing off competition from rivals Barcelona for the wonderkid.

Vinicius cannot link up with La Liga champions Madrid until after his 18th birthday next year, but the Spanish giants plan for him to stay at Flamengo until July 2019 unless both clubs agree otherwise.

Reports in Brazil and Spain claim the value of the transfer is €45million.The teenager has impressed for his country at youth level, topping the scoring charts with seven goals as Brazil won the South American Under-17 Championship in March.

Vinicius soon began courting interest from Madrid and only made his first-team debut for Flamengo as a late substitute in the 1-1 Campeonato Brasileiro draw against Atletico Mineiro on May 13.

The 16-year-old signed a new deal with the Rio de Janeiro giants last week that boosted his salary and raised his release clause from €30m to €45m.Accordingly, Goal understands that the Spaniards will pay Flamengo an initial €30m up front, and another €15m when the transfer is completed in 2018.

Vinicius will also receive a starting salary of €7.5m a year, a figure that is some way beneath the €9m offered by Barcelona, who were also in the chase for the wonderkid.

Madrid are believed to have been keen to wrap up the deal early to avoid missing out on his signature to a rival European club, as occurred when Barcelona scuppered their hopes of taking Neymar to the Santiago Bernabeu while he was still at Santos. The other big winners out of the transfer are Traffic, the multimedia company that represent Vinicius.

Increased armed police presence for FA Cup final

    wembleystadium-cropped_1tz7kz0c718py1hghizjf7hli0.jpg

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed it will deploy extra armed officers for this weekend's FA Cup final in London in light of the Manchester terror attack.A suicide bomber killed 22 people and injured another 59 at Manchester Arena following a concert by American pop star Ariana Grande on Monday.

Premier League champions Chelsea face Arsenal at Wembley as the English football season reaches its traditional conclusion on Saturday. There will also be more armed officers at Twickenham as Wasps and Exeter Chiefs face off in the Premiership Rugby final.

In a statement, the Met confirmed it would undertake a thorough review of its operations for the finals, with a provision of additional armed police already in place.

The statement read: "A full review of the security and policing operations for the weekend's sporting events - the culmination of the football and rugby seasons at Wembley and Twickenham - is underway. This will include the deployment of extra armed officers.

"Operation Hercules - which sees the deployment of a range of mobile and static overt armed officers - will be stepped up to protect the Capital. This is designed to make London as hostile an environment as possible for any would-be attacker. That means the locations, types of tactics and the numbers of officers deployed at once will continually change to be most effective and avoid predictability.

"The Met will continue to do everything possible to protect the Capital not just through the use of armed officers but the ongoing work by specialist detectives in the Counter Terrorism Command; working with partner agencies and gathering community intelligence."
Metropolitan Police commander Jane Connors said: "As the full horror of last night's attack in Manchester still sinks in, the thoughts of all of us in the Met Police are with those who have lost loved ones or who were injured.

"Here in London we are determined to do all we can to protect the Capital. That means that over the coming days, as you go to a music venue, go shopping, travel to work or head off to the fantastic sporting events, you will see more officers - including armed officers."

Minute's silence to be held for Manchester victims before Europa League final

    josemourinho-cropped_fniax7zcuc0t1n343wprpxu6z.jpg

A minute's silence will be held before Wednesday's Europa League final between Manchester United and Ajax in Stockholm to commemorate the victims of the Manchester terror attack, UEFA has confirmed. On Monday, a suicide bomber killed 22 people and injured another 59 at Manchester Arena following a concert by American pop star Ariana Grande.

As a mark of respect, European football's governing body confirmed a silence would be observed prior to kick-off at the Friends Arena, with the players wearing black armbands and its initial plans for a pre-match show scaled back.

"Following last night's attack in Manchester, UEFA has confirmed that a minute's silence will be observed prior to the UEFA Europa League final in Stockholm on Wednesday night," a statement from UEFA read."The opening ceremony will also be considerably reduced as a mark of respect for the victims of the Manchester attack."

UEFA accepted a request from United not to take part in Tuesday's pre-match news conference in light of the tragedy, although manager Jose Mourinho issued a short statement in which he said players and staff "cannot take out of our minds and our hearts the victims and their families", while backing the people of Manchester to "pull together as one".
Mourinho's opposite number Peter Bosz did address the assembled media in the Swedish capital and told reporters a sombre mood around the showpiece match was unavoidable.

"What happened in Manchester is something we all feel at Ajax and on behalf of all players at Ajax I express sympathies with everyone that fell yesterday," Bosz said.
"The feeling that prevails for me is that that final doesn't have this glow it should have.

"Tomorrow should be a football feast but the events have affected it, especially as we are playing Manchester United. I offer my heartfelt sympathies."

Bosz explained his squad had discussed the tragic events, with a number of their loved ones having attended Grande's recent show in Amsterdam."Of course we talked about this," he said. "Her name is Ariana Grande, I think about 10 days ago she was in Amsterdam and wives of players went with children, so it is something that really touches us."If it can happen in Manchester it can happen anywhere."

Asked whether the match should have been postponed, Bosz added: "That's not up to us, I'm just the coach. Other people have to decide."I'm here for the game. It's terrible what happened there, I tried to express that."

Bayern Munich transfer targets are decided, reveals Rummenigge

    karl-heinz-rummenigge_1kv72oglusmqg1djqf9ti9d8nv.jpg

Bayern Munich's close-season transfer targets have already been decided, the club's chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has announced.

The newly crowned Bundesliga champions have already completed deals for Germany internationals Sebastian Rudy and Niklas Sule from fellow Bundesliga top-four side Hoffenheim.

While Schalke have warned Bayern off moving for midfielder Leon Goretzka, Alexis Sanchez has been strongly linked with a switch to the Allianz Arena and Rummenigge said talks with Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti have produced a list of players to pursue.

"We've already discussed the transfer policy with Carlo and the board and decided on targets," said Rummenigge. "Next season we'll have a team that's more than capable of challenging for titles again.

"We have personnel decisions to make. The transfer activity starts now. Sule has come on really well in the last six months and has also been called up to the Germany squad. He's a player who'll make a positive contribution for us in the future."

Despite cruising to a fifth consecutive Bundesliga title, Bayern were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-finals stage and did not reach the DFB-Pokal final after a last-four Klassiker loss against rivals Borussia Dortmund.

But Rummenigge insisted Ancelotti's first year in charge of the club should be judged as a success due to claiming the league title by such a large margin from nearest competitors RB Leipzig."I think it's been a good season," the chief executive added. "We won the league by 15 points.

"That's proof that we've worked well over the whole season. Winning the league isn't something you do easily, [It is] excessive to say it hasn't been a good season."

Sam Allardyce confirms he is leaving Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce has announced he is to quit the club and retire from football management.Allardyce announced his decision in a statement released via his agent on Tuesday, describing the move as a "simple decision".

The departure of the 62-year-old from Selhurst Park comes five months to the day after he was appointed as successor to Alan Pardew at Palace.

Former England boss Allardyce said it was the "right time" to step down despite leading Palace to Premier League survival, collecting eye-catching wins against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool."In some ways, this has been a very difficult decision to make but in others it has been a simple one," Allardyce said in his statement.

"I will always be grateful to Crystal Palace and [chairman] Steve Parish for giving me the opportunity to go out with my head held high having helped keep the club in the Premier League."But there comes a time when you have to take stock of what direction you want your life to take - and that’s been the simple part for me.

"I want to be able to savour life while I’m still relatively young and when I’m still relatively healthy enough to do all the things I want to do, like travel, spend more time with my family and grandchildren without the huge pressure that comes with being a football manager.

"This is the right time for me. I have no ambitions to take another job, I simply want to be able to enjoy all the things you cannot really enjoy with the 24/7 demands of managing any football club, let alone one in the Premier League.

"I would like to thank everybody for their messages of support since the news broke. I’ve no doubt I will miss management but I certainly have no regrets at this decision."
