Zlatan Ibrahimovic compares himself to a lion on road to recovery

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-cropped_1g96a1a232br61av5039r6phza.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic provided an update on his recovery from a serious knee injury in the only way he knows how.

Ibrahimovic is facing a prolonged stint on the sidelines after rupturing his right anterior cruciate ligament during Manchester United's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Anderlecht in April.

The 35-year-old's future at Old Trafford remains uncertain, having only arrived on a one-year deal with the option of a second, but the Swede is determined to prove he is not a spent force at the highest level.

After taking England by storm with 28 goals in all competitions, a barefooted Ibrahimovic used Instagram to showcase his improving physical condition as he compared himself to a lion.

If there is one player not to underestimate, it is the former Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Ajax striker.

Ronaldo: Messi is a companion, not a rival

    cristianoronaldolionelmessi-cropped_25rl2uaeuiad1ul7d6fyjpeqr.jpg

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo praised Lionel Messi and said he enjoyed watching the Barcelona forward.

Either Ronaldo or Messi, the world's two best players, have won the Ballon d'Or the past nine years, and are compared every season. The Portuguese forward, whose team face Juventus in the Champions League final on Saturday, said Messi was among those he enjoyed seeing play.

"I like to see all good players and Messi is one of them. He is a player," Ronaldo told Fox Sports Argentina."I really enjoy seeing him on the pitch and all the great players."

Ronaldo has enjoyed another fine campaign, having scored 40 goals in all competitions to help Madrid reclaim the La Liga title. The 32-year-old said he had a decent relationship with Messi, although he disliked the constant comparisons."Whenever I'm with him, I have a very good relationship with Messi," Ronaldo said.

"It's not that I go to his house and eat together. He is not a friend, but I consider him a companion by profession and not a rival because I don't like it, like comparisons."It is part of the work and the world of football."

Valverde: Coaching Messi a unique experience

    ernesto-valverde-cropped_1gyas2ksciwkl1tvn78pckiukj.jpg

Newly appointed Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde is looking forward to working with Lionel Messi and hopes the Argentina international can continue to improve under his guidance.Valverde was named as Luis Enrique's successor this week and was officially presented to the media on Thursday.

It is widely believed Luis Enrique had a somewhat complicated relationship with Messi and Valverde is determined to ensure there will not be any problems between him and the 29-year-old.

The former Athletic Bilbao boss also highlighted the importance of Andres Iniesta amid ongoing uncertainty about the playmaker's future at Camp Nou."The biggest challenge for me will be to coach a great team full of great players," Valverde said at a news conference."It will be a joy to coach Messi, a unique experience to coach the best player I have ever seen.

"I know that sometimes it looks like he has reached the absolute peak of his powers and then the next day he improves even more. My plan is to help him to keep improving and to enjoy working with him. "Barcelona and the club's philosophy are renowned all over the world. I have to adapt and to deepen that characteristic style that Barca have.

"I can count on great players like Leo, Iniesta and more. I consider Andres to be a very important player for the team and for the club.

"I want to help the players improve day after day and create a team spirit that we can rely on at the bad moments and the good moments. We want to bring joy to the fans all around the world and of course to win silverware, that is the main objective."

    Zenit appoint Mancini as manager

    roberto-mancini-cropped_pzegfevgih6u103vbv2vunhmd.jpg

Zenit have confirmed the appointment of Roberto Mancini as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

Mircea Lucescu departed the club last month after he could only lead them to third place in the Russian Premier League and elimination from the last 32 of the Europa League. And Zenit have now turned to Mancini, a league winner in Italy with Inter and England with Manchester City.

Since he was sacked by City in 2013, Mancini has led Galatasaray, winning the Turkish Cup, before returning to Inter in 2014.

He left San Siro for a second time on the eve of last season, however, amid tension over pre-season hammerings at the hands of Tottenham and Bayern Munich.
Mancini becomes the second Italian to coach Zenit, after Luciano Spalletti, who won two league titles at the Petrovsky Stadium in 2010 and 2012.

No €70m PSG offer for Aubameyang, claim Dortmund

    pierre-emerick-aubameyang-cropped_1wgpbeyv1ue251azwtty1uvzpe.jpg

Michael Zorc has stressed Borussia Dortmund have not received any offers for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang amid reports Paris Saint-Germain are willing to spend €70 million on the Gabon international.

PSG are keen to strengthen their attack ahead of next season after missing out on the Ligue 1 title in 2016-17, Monaco proving too strong for Unai Emery's men, and speculation has linked Aubameyang as the ideal addition to their squad.Nevertheless, Dortmund are adamant they have yet to receive any bids for the 27-year-old striker.

"As of now, we have not received any offers from any club across the world," sporting director Zorc told Ruhr Nachrichten.Aubameyang has a contract with Dortmund until June 2020 and the Bundesliga side are keen to hold on to their star attacker.

Dortmund have previously acknowledged they might have no other option but to cash in on the prolific striker if a big-money offer comes in, though, and PSG seem to be ready to spend big during the close-season.Aubameyang enjoyed a stellar 2016-17 campaign as he netted 31 times in 32 league outings to clinch the Bundesliga top scorer title.

Jorge Sampaoli confirmed as new Argentina coach

    jorge-sampaoli-sevilla_6ssyld2hq7gg14hv1qwheqjlm.jpg

Jorge Sampaoli has been confirmed as the new Argentina coach after agreeing to part ways with Sevilla.

The Casilda native has been linked with the job for months, and speculation only heightened when Edgardo Bauza was relieved of his duties in April after less than a year in charge.

On the eve of his announcement, however, there were reports that the deal could fall through due to last-minute financial differences between the two parties.

Nevertheless, on Thursday, the first day Sampaoli was officially allowed to discuss terms with his home nation, the Argentine Football Association has confirmed he will be taking the job with immediate effect. Sampaoli will be presented in his new role in a press conference scheduled later on Thursday at the AFA training facilities in Ezeiza, Buenos Aires.

The coach, 57, received his first taste of international football with Chile, whom he led to the 2014 World Cup before sealing their first-ever major title the following year with victory in the Copa America. He subsequently succeeded Unai Emery in Andalucia, taking Sevilla to fourth place in his first and only season at the club as well as a last-16 appearance in the Champions League.

His first challenge as Albiceleste boss will come with a baptism of fire on June 9, when he takes on eternal rivals Brazil in a friendly to be played in Australia. A clash against Singapore follows for Argentina, while his debut in competitive football looms in August when the nation travel to Uruguay for a World Cup qualifier.

OFFICIAL: Toure signs new one-year Manchester City deal

    yaya-toure-manchester-city_195iai54tqv451sbxhzybtuj28.jpg

Yaya Toure will stay put at Manchester City for at least another season after signing a one-year contract extension on Thursday. The explosive midfielder appeared to be on the way out at the Etihad Stadium after starting Pep Guardiola's tenure warming the bench.

Toure, however, muscled his way back into contention and was a vital part of City's fight to reach next year's Champions League, a feat achieved on the last day of the season as they sealed third place. And now he has quashed any further speculation on his future by putting pen to paper on a fresh deal.

“Yaya has been a fantastic servant for Manchester City and continues to be a vital member of Pep Guardiola’s squad," City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain said in a statement released by the club on its official website.

“He is one of our most experienced and popular players and we couldn’t be happier that he is staying with us as we embark on what we all hope will be a very exciting season.“Yaya has been central to the successes we’ve had over the past seven years and he has a vital part play next season.”

The player himself also registered his delight in staying and affirmed he still had unfinished business at the Etihad.“I’m delighted. I told myself the journey at City is not done and when I received a call from Txiki and talked to the manager I was very delighted," he explained.

"When I was first coming here [in 2010] I was trying to be part of a new story, of something special at this club. I am very lucky now to be part of a great club with great players around me who are helping me to achieve my targets.

"Of course I want to win trophies, that is very important to me. I want to enjoy it at this age still and remaining here is a massive, massive thing. It is a great club, going in the right direction with new players who are coming in."Our mentality is always to win week in, week out and I’m delighted with the fans as well.”

OFFICIAL: Stoke City sign Fletcher on two-year deal

    darren-fletcher-west-brom_1q3g4h2uf806h1trd5n5e0ulm5.jpg

Scotland captain Darren Fletcher has agreed a two-year deal to join Stoke City when his contract with Premier League counterparts West Brom expires.

The 33-year-old did not miss a top-flight game after joining Albion in February 2015, making 91 successive appearances under ex-Stoke boss Tony Pulis, who handed him the captaincy.

Fletcher spent the bulk of his career at Manchester United, progressing through the youth ranks before winning five Premier League titles, two EFL Cups, an FA Cup, the 2007-08 Champions League and the 2008 Club World Cup."It's all happened incredibly quickly, but I am delighted to be here," Fletcher told Stoke's official website.

"This is a fantastic club with a top manager and a great group of players and I am really looking forward to this opportunity."I loved every moment of my time at West Bromwich Albion and I loved every moment of my time with Manchester United, but this is a new challenge for me now, and I like to think I respond well to new challenges."

Stoke boss Mark Hughes is delighted to have made Fletcher his first capture of the close-season after an underwhelming 13th-place finish in 2016-17."Darren is a person and a player that I have admired from afar for quite some time now, and I'm understandably delighted to have been able to bring him to the club," Hughes said.

"It goes without saying that he has enjoyed a distinguished career in the game, having helped Manchester United to win any number of trophies during his hugely successful time there.

"He has shown over the past two seasons that his qualities and appetite for the game haven't diminished in any way, and I believe that his experience and leadership qualities will significantly enhance us."

OFFICIAL: Falcao extends Monaco contract until 2020

    radamel-falcao-monaco-dortmund-champions-league-18042017_19ltn94kt5vrnzvue1k7fgck7.jpg

Radamel Falcao has been rewarded for firing Monaco to the Ligue 1 title with a new contract until 2020.

Falcao began this season with a bruised reputation after a pair of chastening Premier League seasons on loan at Manchester United and Chelsea, but he has been back to his sharp-shooting best with 21 goals in 29 league games helping Monaco to their first top-flight title since 2000.

The Colombia star was also prolific in the Champions League, scoring seven times as the principality club shocked Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund to reach the semi-finals."I am happy to continue my adventure at AS Monaco," the club captain said in a statement.

"After this incredible season where I found all my motivation, I had only one desire: to prolong this beautiful story!"I am confident that this project will be just as exciting next season with the desire to aim for the best."

Taking on a role as more of an elder statesman in Leonardo Jardim's exciting team, Falcao has been paired with emerging France star Kylian Mbappe this season.

Mbappe has spoken highly of their burgeoning partnership, saying: "I think I'm the luckiest player in our squad, because I'm at the start of my career and get to play alongside a top striker like Radamel. He's made his mark on the history of the game and scored a huge number of goals."Tying Mbappe to renewed terms may be Monaco's next priority in the face of reported interest from Real Madrid and Manchester United.

News of Falcao's deal comes in a busy close-season for Monaco after they sold Bernardo Silva to Manchester City in a reported €50million deal.

Benfica president due for Man Utd talks over Semedo and Lindelof

    victor-lindelof-benfica_uwj4bcin09vs1h95pxntne6s9.jpg

Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira is expected to arrive in Manchester on Thursday to negotiate with Manchester United regarding potential moves for Nelson Semedo and Victor Lindelof.

The Lisbon outfit managed to hold on to centre-back Lindelof in the January transfer window despite notable interest from United, with the Swede even going on to extend his contract until the summer of 2021 after striking a deal in March.

But United are still keen to tie up a transfer for Lindelof despite his renewed contract driving up his market value to around £50 million, and right-back Semedo is also a target after impressing United scouts on their regular trips to the Estadio da Luz.

And now Goal understands that Vieira is due to land in Manchester on Thursday to accelerate talks between the two clubs, with United keen on tying up all transfer business ahead of their summer tour of the United States which begins with a friendly match against Los Angeles Galaxy on July 15.

United manager Jose Mourinho gave a list of preferred summer targets to executive vice-chair Ed Woodward before heading off on his summer holiday, with Lindelof and Semedo thought to be high on his list as he looks to address some defensive issues which arose during his first season in charge at Old Trafford.

The cruciate knee ligament injury suffered by former Sporting Lisbon centre-half Marcos Rojo has weakened United’s stock in the middle of defence, while Antonio Valencia was the club’s only consistent performer at right-back in 2016-17 and doubts remain over the futures of alternative full-backs Ashley Young and Matteo Darmian.

The 22-year-old Lindelof has made 72 appearances for Benfica since first stepping up from the club’s ‘B’ team in 2013-14, also appearing 11 times for the Swedish national team. Semedo has won two caps for Portugal on the back of 63 first-team outings for the Lisbon side.

Man City sign Ederson for £35 million from Benfica

    ederson-benfica_1bk0ig8ghaz4e102yaifzgwbij.jpg

Manchester City have made Benfica goalkeeper Ederson their second signing of the summer after completing the second-most expensive goalkeeper deal in history. The 23-year-old - who is yet to make his debut for Brazil - signed a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium, with the move completed on Thursday.

Ederson will cost City £35 million, making him - in pound sterling - the most expensive goalkeeper in history, surpassing the £33m Juventus paid Parma for Gianluigi Buffon in 2001.

However, City are keen to stress that it's not a world record as the amount in Euros, which is how they paid Benfica (€40m), is lower than how much Juve paid for Buffon (€53m) in 2001.

Goal reported on Saturday morning that City were confident of concluding negotiations following Benfica's Taca de Portugal final on Sunday , a game they won 2-1.

Ederson flew into Manchester on Monday and was at City's training ground on Tuesday to complete a medical and conduct interviews with the club's in-house media channels, but official confirmation of his signing was held up by third-party ownership issues.

He will battle with Claudio Bravo for a place in the Pep Guardiola's starting XI next season, with Willy Caballero having been released and Joe Hart to be sold following the end of his loan spell at Torino.

City's summer spending now stands at £78m, after the club announced the £43m capture of Bernardo Silva from Monaco on Friday.

Wenger must deliver Premier League title, says Arsenal legend Henry

    hd-thierry-henry_bqmhujln6l1r10bw53qhv5zyf.jpg

Thierry Henry says Arsene Wenger needs to win the Premier League title after ending speculation over his future by signing a new two-year contract.

The Arsenal manager renewed his deal on Wednesday following a season that saw the Gunners finish fifth and miss out on Champions League qualification for the first time in two decades, although they did win a third FA Cup in the last four years.

Henry, the club's record goalscorer, feels everyone at the Emirates Stadium is waiting to win the league for the first time since 2004, which he claims must be the target next season.

The 1998 World Cup winner hopes Wenger's successful change to a three-man defence towards the end of 2016-17 can prove the catalyst for a title charge.
Asked if Wenger's decision to stay was correct, Henry told Sky Sports : "Time will tell.

"As an Arsenal fan, and as a guy who had Arsene as a coach and have maximum respect for him, I'm happy to see him at the club. "They finished the season strong, although they have done that before. Raising yourself for the FA Cup final, to beat one team on one day is one thing. To do it over 38 games is a different story."

Henry added: "Everyone is waiting for the title; the club, the players, the fans and Arsene himself.
"That's what I want to see because raising your game for one day is one thing, but everybody is waiting for that to be done over 38 games.

"I can only go with what Wenger is saying. He says the team is good enough. He might buy one or two players having, as he's claimed, created a dynamic to win the title finally. But I have heard that before and the year before, and the year before.
"Hopefully a change in system might be the thing that helps them win the title next year."

Atletico Madrid transfer ban defeat kills Costa bid and ends Man Utd’s Griezmann hopes

    diego-costa-antoine-griezmann-composite_7ot10xfwgs8i198jugc3ioas0.jpg

Atletico Madrid have lost an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a transfer ban imposed by FIFA, meaning they cannot register players until January 2018.

Diego Simeone's side, and rivals Real Madrid, were banned from signing players for two transfer windows for breaching the rules over the transfer of foreign players under the age of 18.

After losing their appeal to FIFA, Atletico served the first window of their ban in January 2017, having agreed to waive their right to suspend a FIFA transfer ban while they appealed the sanction to CAS.

But CAS' ruling, which Atletico say they strongly disagree with, means they are unable to add new players prior to the 2017-18 season and will now serve the second window of their ban.

"CAS has dismissed the appeal presented by Atletico de Madrid against the penalty imposed by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee on the case of registering players under age and that was ratified by FIFA's Appeal Committee, reducing the financial penalty, but maintaining the prohibition of registering licenses in the next transfer market period," Atletico said in a statement on Thursday.
The decision will affect the transfer plans of Atletico and other clubs. Antoine Griezmann has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, while the Spanish side will now not be able to land rumoured targets Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon and former star Diego Costa, currently at Chelsea, until next January at the earliest.

United were considered to be frontrunners to sign France international Griezmann following their Europa League win, with the promise of continuing to play Champions League football helping the Red Devils capture their target. However, this new jeopardises any chance of a transfer with Atleti now unable to sign a replacement.

This has a knock-on effect on other clubs as well, with Lacazette previously saying that it was "the right moment" to leave Lyon. However, with Atletico Madrid now out of the running, his departure may be put on hold. Similarly, Diego Costa had been linked with a return to his former club, but the Chelsea striker no longer has this option due to the transfer ban.

The Spanish striker has been the subject of much speculation regarding a Stamford Bridge exit, with a move back to Atletico Madrid considered an extremely likely scenario. However, a return to La Liga is no longer an option in the short-term, leaving a possible transfer to the Chinese Super League a realistic option should Costa turn his back on Chelsea.

Man Utd move off? Griezmann commits to Atletico Madrid after transfer ban

    antoine-griezmann-atletico-madrid_151d5v6m4lvh61fc856ixynrqj.jpg

Antoine Griezmann has pledged his loyalty to Atletico Madrid after their transfer ban was upheld, appearing to rule out a summer move to Manchester United in the process.

United have been heavily linked with the Frenchman but Atletico's inability to sign a replacement because of their ban has dealt a severe blow to the Red Devils' hopes of sealing his signing.

And Griezmann appears to have now poured cold water on the potential switch by tweeting "Now more than ever, Atleti" hours after the Spanish club's appeal against the punishment was rejected.

Atletico had been tipped to move for Chelsea striker Diego Costa and Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette in the coming months but will now be unable to sign players until January 2018.

That looks set to at least delay a move that could have challenged the world transfer record, with Griezmann's buy-out clause reportedly set at around €100 million.

Reports in the British press on Thursday morning suggested United were instead turning their attention to a No.9 to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with Alvaro Morata, Romelu Lukaku and Andrea Belotti all linked.Griezmann, 26, scored 26 goals during the 2016-17 season and placed third in the Ballon d'Or voting in December.

His commitment to Atletico will come as a huge boost for Diego Simeone, with Kevin Gameiro his side's second top scorer this past campaign with 16 in all competitions and Fernando Torres out of contract.

Atleti were handed a two-window transfer ban for breaching FIFA regulations regarding the acquisition of foreign players under the age of 18.

Half of the punishment was served during the most recent January transfer window, but having expected to have the ban overturned upon appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the Rojiblancos' summer plans have now been left in tatters.

They could opt to bring the likes of Luciano Vietto and Matias Kranevitter back from loans to bolster their squad, though Theo Hernandez, who spent the season at Alaves, has been heavily tipped to join Real Madrid.

Kruse attracts Mourinho's interest amid Man Utd striker search

    max-kruse-wolfsburg-supercup-01082015_jab6f1jzyp151fpo7v8cl22fl.jpg

Max Kruse is among Manchester United’s list of potential striker targets after his late-season form with Werder Bremen piqued the interest of Jose Mourinho.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach and Wolfsburg front man netted 15 goals in 23 appearances for the Weserstadion side in 2016-17, including a run of 11 in 11 games between March and May. And Goal understands it is a run which has made Mourinho sit up and take notice.

The United manager explained after the Europa League final win over Ajax that executive vice-chair Ed Woodward is well aware of the players Mourinho would like to see at Old Trafford.

“Ed Woodward has my list, what I want, what I would like for more than two months. So now it’s up to him and the owners,” the Portuguese told BT Sport .

And while the likes of Alvaro Morata and Andrea Belotti are thought to rank high on Mourinho’s wanted list, sources close to the situation say Kruse is considered among possible fall-back options should the club not get their way in the summer transfer market.

Kruse is now 29, putting him at the higher end of the age range Mourinho is thought to be targeting, but his improved form during the spring put him in contention for the Germany squad at this summer’s Confederations Cup before national boss Joachim Low eventually chose an inexperienced group to travel to Russia. He has previously played 14 times for his country, scoring four times.

United appear ready to withdraw any interest in Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann after Thursday’s news that the Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld a transfer ban on the Spanish side.

But with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s one-year contract expiring and the Swede facing a long road to recovery following knee surgery, United are very keen on adding a front-line striker and Kruse is one of those under consideration.

Ronaldo: I would tell James to stay at Madrid but he has his reasons

    james-rodriguez-real-madrid-premiera-division-040517_1oi0rp18splid12wzkxcwkbpic.jpg

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo hopes James Rodriguez remains at the Santiago Bernabeu but would understand if the Colombian departed. With regular football hard to come by under head coach Zinedine Zidane, James has been tipped to leave Madrid during the off-season.

James – who has fallen down the pecking order since Zidane replaced Rafael Benitez in January last year – started only 13 of 22 games as Madrid claimed La Liga.

Manchester United and Inter have emerged as possible destinations but four-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo wants the 25-year-old to stay in the Spanish capital."James has his reasons [to leave] and we have to respect them," Ronaldo told La Sexta ahead of Saturday's Champions League final against Juventus in Cardiff."If he doesn't feel happy and if he wants more, then he should look for the best thing for him.

"If he asked my opinion, I would tell him to stay."Obviously he has his complaints and the best thing would be that he plays more, but these are very personal things.""He has the potential to play for Real Madrid, but he has his reasons and we must respect them," Ronaldo.

Mexico 3 Republic of Ireland 1: Corona, Jimenez and Vela inspire Mexicans

    corona-cropped_r8qba942ptff1uqk9pxu4snn0.jpg

Mexico produced a dominant performance to ease past an understrength Republic of Ireland side 3-1 in Thursday's international friendly.Jesus Corona, Raul Jimenez and Carlos Vela were on target for the Mexicans at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Quick-fire goals from Corona and Jimenez put Mexico in control in the first half against an Ireland team missing John O'Shea, Seamus Coleman, Glenn Whelan, Shane Long, Jonathan Walters and James McCarthy.

Vela made it 3-0 in the 54th minute, while Stephen Gleeson reduced the deficit with his first international goal in his fourth appearance.Star names Jimenez, Vela, Hector Herrera and Corona were included in Mexico's starting XI, but goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota made his international debut.

Inexperienced trio Carlos Salcedo, Jesus Gallardo and Jorge Hernandez were handed chances as Javier Hernandez and Miguel Layun watched from the bench ahead of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifier against Honduras on June 8.

The likes of Conor Hourihane, Callum O'Dowda, Shane Duffy and Daryl Horgan were named by Ireland boss Martin O'Neill, who was looking ahead to Sunday's friendly against Uruguay before their qualifying fixture against Austria on June 11.
Unlike previous international friendlies, this clash had a competitive tempo to it as both teams threatened early. Corona had a good chance to break the deadlock in the third minute but his effort flashed just wide of the post.At the other end, James McClean tried his luck as Ireland pushed numbers forward but it was the hosts who opened the scoring in the 16th minute.

Mexico executed a counter-attack to perfection as Jorge Hernandez broke free following an Ireland corner and played the ball to Corona, who weaved his way past two defenders before cutting inside the area and curling his shot beyond Darren Randolph.Irish duo Daryl Murphy and Cyrus Christie had attempts on goal but they were unable to trouble Cota.

Mexico then doubled their advantage eight minutes later via Jimenez from the penalty spot. McClean brought down Vela inside the box and the Benfica forward made no mistake.

That goal deflated Ireland, who struggled to keep their shape and retain possession as Mexico were unfortunate not to lead by more at half-time.Juan Carlos Osorio rang the changes at the break and substitute Oribe Peralta made an immediate impact.

Peralta had his shot saved nine minutes into the second half but having been thwarted by Randolph from an acute angle, he squared the ball to Vela for the easiest of tap-ins.Ireland managed to get on the board after Mexico failed to clear their lines, allowing Gleeson to pull a goal back with 14 minutes remaining.

The Irish almost netted a second in the 81st minute but O'Dowda was denied by Cota as Mexico bounced back from their 2-1 loss to Croatia.

Van Dijk is Man City's top centre-back target but move could hinge on Mbappe

    hd-virgil-van-dijk_1tco02lxbn35x1cwav6zsqwo9h.jpg

Manchester City have identified Southampton's Virgil van Dijk as their top centre-back target, Goal has learned, but his arrival could depend on whether the Blues can pull off a big-money move for Kylian Mbappe.

City have identified five priority targets this summer and have acted decisively in clinching deals for playmaker Bernardo Silva and goalkeeper Ederson - though the latter deal is awaiting international clearance. Senior sources are also very confident of signing Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy and Alexis Sanchez, and there is a hope that at least two of those deals will be completed long before pre-season begins in July.

The rest of the club's business is less clear cut, however, and with City targeting another three or four players on top of the aforementioned five, much depends on whether Mbappe can be prised from Monaco.Van Dijk has emerged as the top target for the central defensive position and City are ready to pay Southampton around £50m for his services.

While the move could go ahead regardless, should City decide to head off rival interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, the situation regarding central defensive reinforcements is much more fluid than it is regarding City's first five targets, who they want to sign at all costs. There are currently discussions ongoing behind the scenes which suggest the Van Dijk move could be delayed or even shelved if a move for long-time target and Pep Guardiola favourite Mbappe becomes possible.

The Blues made a late bid to sign the teenager towards the end of last summer's transfer window and are so keen to bring him to the club that they remain interested despite Monaco's massive asking price.

It is believed that City, in an ideal scenario, would wait a year to sign the 18-year-old, so they could use the money required - £110m or more - on strengthening other areas of the squad this summer.

But interest from Real Madrid and other clubs could force their hand, and Guardiola would have no problem accommodating Alexis and Mbappe in the same team, were it possible.

Goal has previously reported that City are not willing to pay the quoted £110m for Mbappe, but there remains a hope that any deal can be arranged for a lower fee, or that City will be able to sell enough players this summer to fund a full-price move.
City have already sold young striker Enes Unal to Villarreal for around £13m, despite the Turkey international never having played for the club, and more sales of that type will boost the coffers. Kelechi Iheanacho could also be moved on for more than £20m.The Etihad Stadium outfit would also step up their attempts to sign Mbappe if Arsenal refuse to sell them Alexis, who has his heart set on a move to the Etihad Stadium.

It means that while City have moved quickly to tie up deals for Bernardo Silva and Ederson, as well as believing they are close to Mendy, Walker and Alexis, the rest of their big business this summer will depend on a number of factors.

Van Dijk has become City's top target at centre-back as it is believed there is little chance of signing Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus, while Aymeric Laporte will not be pursued after angering the club last summer by pulling the plug on a planned move to the Etihad Stadium at the last minute.Yet there is a possibility that City may yet decide not to sign a centre-back at all in the coming months, should they decide to go all in for Mbappe.

The fitness of Vincent Kompany will also influence City's decision to enter the market for Van Dijk. Guardiola has been impressed by what he saw from Kompany in the final weeks of the season and, if Mbappe were to sign, the Catalan would be happy to make the Belgian first choice going into the 2017-18 campaign if he can maintain his fitness.

It remains possible, however, that City could sign sign both Mbappe and Van Dijk, or another centre-back. The Blues would receive a major cash injection if Sergio Aguero were to shock the club by agitating for a move, though that is currently regarded as far unlikelier than it had appeared earlier this seasonCity may also decide to splash out on both Mbappe and Van Dijk this summer if a Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) hearing goes against them in July.

Velez Sarsfield are taking City, FIFA and the Football Association to the CAS over the signing of young striker Benjamin Garre. City were cleared of any wrongdoing by the relevant governing bodies but Velez insist Garre was signed illegally.Should City be found guilty they could face a global transfer ban, which would only serve to expedite their business this summer.

City's chances of landing Van Dijk could also be affected by how he recovers from the damaged ligament in his foot which ruled him out for the final four months of the season, while Liverpool and Chelsea are also believed to be interested in signing him.

It is understood Van Dijk is not the only candidate to strengthen the centre of defence, though Atletico Madrid's Lucas Hernandez is not thought to be an option, despite reports in Spain this week.

Goal understands that City will look to bring in at least one more full-back should they eventually tie up moves for Monaco left-back Mendy and Tottenham right-back Walker, though Benfica's Nelson Semedo has been ruled out and could yet move to Manchester United.

Senior sources at the Etihad expect to be able to sign both Mendy and Walker in the coming weeks, though Monaco are also mindful of the Mbappe situation, while Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has exasperated his City counterparts at times during recent negotiations.

Given the £43m purchase of Silva, which was announced last week, and the expected arrival of Mendy for around £39m, City could send more than £190m to Monaco this summer if they manage to win the race for Mbappe.

Chelsea earn £150m as Premier League payments revealed

The Premier League paid almost £2.4 billion in payments to its 20 clubs in 2016-17 it has been revealed.

As the first season under the new lucrative television contract, the English top flight has paid out record fees to its 20 clubs, vastly improving on last term's payments which totalled £1.6bn.

Champions Chelsea were rewarded the most, earning a total of £150,811,183 from the richest division in the world. By contrast, Leicester City received £93.2m after finishing first in 2015-16, which is less than this year's bottom-placed side Sunderland earned (£93.5m).

Second-placed Tottenham were given £145.5m, which is less than third and fourth placed Manchester City (£146.9m) and Liverpool (£146.1m) as their facilities fees - based on each time a club's matches are broadcast in the UK - were higher, while Manchester United's £141m topped the £139.6m Arsenal received despite finishing below them.

The total is a combination of TV and commercial revenue, merit payments and facilities fees in addition to the equal share of £35m paid to all 20 sides. A total of £781.8m was paid in overseas TV revenue, with each team receiving £39m and a further £4.8m each from commercial deals.

It has also been revealed that the three sides relegated from the top flight last season - Aston Villa, Norwich City and Newcastle United - were given £40.9m in parachute payments.
