Italy 3 Uruguay 0: Hapless Gimenez hands Azzurri victory

    italy-cropped_1jqvyy784f2s91bhcs1pf160wj.jpg

Jose Gimenez's stunning own goal, Eder's late strike and a Daniele De Rossi penalty in injury time ensured Italy extended their unbeaten streak to nine games under Giampiero Ventura with a 3-0 victory over Uruguay.

Atletico Madrid defender Gimenez had a night to forget, inadvertently firing a crisp volley beyond Fernando Muslera with only seven minutes on the clock in Nice.

Italy's win was confirmed when Eder bundled home Manolo Gabbiadini's late cross, but there was still time for Gimenez to bring down Stephan El Shaarawy in added time, Roma stalwart De Rossi stroking home from 12 yards to add gloss to the scoreline.

Ciro Immobile and Andrea Belotti both had chances to extend Italy's lead before the break but were wasteful, while Gianluigi Donnarumma was barely tested in the Azzurri goal.

As the hour approached the young AC Milan keeper was beaten by Martin Caceres, only for Uruguay to see the goal ruled out for a foul.Substitute Eder should have extended Italy's lead with a free header but he atoned for his error in the closing minutes, before Gimenez capped off his sorry showing.

Italy's thoughts now turn to their World Cup qualifier with Liechtenstein on Sunday, while Uruguay return home after successive defeats on their European trip.

In a half-full Allianz Riviera, it was Italy who looked brighter early on and they were gifted the game's opening goal on seven minutes by Gimenez.

A long ball from Lorenzo Insigne was beautiful controlled on the chest by Belotti, but before he had time to turn and shoot, Gimenez had volleyed the ball into his own goal as he attempted to clear the danger. With their tails up, Italy pushed for a second, but found Muslera in fine form, the former Lazio goalkeeper denying Belotti and Insigne in quick succession.

Ventura was forced into a change after 18 minutes as Claudio Marchisio's international return came to an abrupt end, the midfielder limping off to be replaced by Riccardo Montolivo.

Uruguay captain Maxi Pereira gave Donnarumma something to do with a shot that flashed wide, before Insigne and Immobile both wasted good chances for the designated home side.

Immobile thought he should have had a penalty in the closing minutes of the half when he was barged over by two defenders, but his claims were waved away, much to his frustration.

After a cagey start to the second period Uruguay finally threatened the Italy goal as Caceres rose to meet Urreta's free-kick on the hour.Caceres climbed highest before heading beyond Donnarumma's out-reached arm but was denied an equaliser after being penalised for a foul on Montolivo.

Italy should have wrapped things up with 15 minutes to play when Leonardo Spinazzola found Eder unmarked at the back post, but the sub inexplicably headed wide.Eder atoned for his miss with eight minutes remaining as he diverted Gabbiadini's cross home, and De Rossi added gloss to the win in stoppage time.

Substitute El Shaarawy was hauled down by the luckless Gimenez in the penalty area and De Rossi made no mistake from 12 yards to complete the win.

    :love:Spain 2 Colombia 2: Morata rescues draw after Falcao's record-breaking goal

    david-silva-cropped_rx44vyqeb5x519rvaj99qayuf.jpg

Alvaro Morata scored a late equaliser as Spain drew 2-2 with Colombia in an engrossing friendly match in Murcia on Wednesday.

The visitors had looked set to claim the win after Edwin Cardona and Radamel Falcao put them ahead following David Silva's opener, only for Morata's brilliant header to rescue a draw for the home side.

The goal spared head coach Julen Lopetegui from his first defeat since succeeding Vicente del Bosque last year, although it marked the first time that Spain have conceded two goals in a home match since a 3-2 win over Ivory Coast in 2006.

A minute's reflection was held prior to kick-off to mark the deaths of former Colombia international Marcos Coll, the ex-president of the coaching committee in Murcia, Manuel Redon, and Ignacio Echeverria, a Spanish citizen killed in the terror attack in London last Saturday.

Lopetegui named a strong starting line-up that included veterans Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta and Silva alongside debutant Asier Illarramendi, and Spain deserved the lead they took when the Manchester City star netted after 22 minutes.

A dreadful defensive mix-up allowed Cardona to score a well-taken equaliser, however, before Falcao's bullet header shortly after half-time – his 26th international goal, two years on from his 25th – left Estadio Nueva Condomina stunned.

Spain enjoyed 71 per cent of the ball but looked unlikely to stop a resurgent Colombia from claiming a third win in a row, until they were saved by an expert finish from Real Madrid man Morata, who continues to be heavily linked with Manchester United.

Silva had the first good opportunity after eight minutes, expertly controlling Iniesta's throughball before seeing a shot saved by David Ospina, a rebound blocked by Carlos Sanchez and a third attempt held by the goalkeeper.

Juan Cuadrado tested Pepe Reina with a powerful strike from 25 yards but Spain continued to look the more threatening, with Pedro curling a fierce left-foot effort over the bar after a fine run.

With 21 minutes played, they made their dominance count. Koke fed Pedro down the right and the Chelsea man's low cross was side-footed goalwards by Silva, with Ospina just unable to stop the ball bouncing into the net.

Iago Aspas and James Rodriguez each came close with clever efforts but it was Cardona who levelled the scores before the break after making the most of some desperate Spain defending.

Pique – who had been booed by some of the home support once again – and Cesar Azpilicueta both hesitated to deal with a high ball into the box from Cuadrado, allowing Cardona to steal in and loop a clever finish over the stranded Reina.

Silva and Iniesta picked up knocks in the first half and both were withdrawn at the break, with one of those replacements, Real Madrid's Marco Asensio, almost setting up Aspas to regain Spain's lead less than 10 minutes after the restart.

However, it was Colombia who struck next in the 55th minute, with Falcao leaping highest to power home James' corner after Reina found himself stranded out of his goal.

Koke's free-kick required an athletic stop from Ospina as Spain went in search of an equaliser, but even with Morata on the pitch, they fashioned few other chances of note.

However, with three minutes of normal time remaining, Morata met Saul Niguez's cross from the left with a superb glancing header that flew into the corner beyond Ospina and gave Spain something of a lift ahead of next week's World Cup qualifier against Macedonia.

Falcao becomes Colombia's all-time top goalscorer

    radamel-falcao-colombia_qycr3dbch0xc1o37j93zssn0w.jpg

Radamel Falcao is now the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the Colombia national team.

The 31-year-old striker scored in the 55th minute in an international friendly against Spain to give his side a 2-1 advantage. It was Falcao’s 26th goal for his country in 65 games and moved him into the sole spot at the top of Colombia’s goalscoring charts. He passed Arnoldo Iguaran, who scored 25 goals playing in 68 matches for Colombia from 1973-1993.

It had been a long time coming for Falcao. His last goal for his country came on 6 June 2015, meaning he broke his international drought almost exactly two years to the day.

The striker may want to continue finding the goals for Colombia, however, if he wants to maintain the record for as long as Iguaran held it. Real Madrid attacker James Rodriguez has 19 goals in his Colombia career and is just 25-years-old, leaving him lots of time to catch up to Falcao if the latter experiences another goalscoring drought.

And while Falcao made history on one side for Colombia, Spain had an impressive decade-long streak of their own finally snapped Though scoring two goals may not seem like the greatest achievement, it is when visiting Spain. When at home, they had not conceded more than a single goal since a match against Ivory Coast in 2006.

Spain did rally for a late equalizer, courtesy of Alvaro Morata, as the countries played out a 2-2 draw.

Costa claims Conte does not want him at Chelsea

    antonio-conte-diego-costa-chelsea_18m1vrkaehkit10mtw1ptue8xr.jpg

Chelsea striker Diego Costa says he has been told by manager Antonio Conte that he does not have a future at Stamford Bridge. The striker has been linked with a move away from the Premier League champions for much of the past season, despite having scored 22 goals in all competitions.

Costa was tipped for a move to the lucrative Chinese Super League in January only to commit to Chelsea for the remainder of the campaign, but his future has been cast into fresh doubt since reports emerged linking the Blues with a bid for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku.

The 28-year-old Costa has now stated that Conte has informed him he is free to look for another club and believes his dip in form in the second half of the season is behind the decision.

"I had a simple little message on my mobile from Conte in which he said that he isn't counting on me for next season," Costa told the media following Spain's 2-2 friendly draw with Colombia on Wednesday.

"It will be because I've done badly this year. It's a shame. I've forwarded the message on to the people at the club for them to decide but it's clear that the coach isn't counting on me and he doesn't want me there.

"I'm on the market and so I'm looking for a team. If the coach doesn't want you, you have to leave."Costa has been linked with a potential move back to Atletico Madrid but he says a return is complicated by the LaLiga club's transfer ban.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) refused to uphold Atletico's appeal against a ban on registering new players handed down by FIFA, which means they will be unable to field any new signings until January next year.

"It would be nice to go back to Atletico but I have to think everything over," he said. "There's a World Cup [in 2018] and I need to play. Being four or five months without playing is tough, but people know that I love my Atletico team-mates a lot, I love living in Madrid."

Manchester City's £40m target Benjamin Mendy is the best crosser in the world

    benjamin-mendy_15kr6veczhe3w1bd14ucct33bk.jpg

Amid the hullaballoo of Radamel Falcao’s renaissance, the stunning form of Bernardo Silva and the explosion of Kylian Mbappe, it would have been easy to overlook Benjamin Mendy’s contribution to Monaco’s stunningly successful 2016-17 season.

The left-back joined the principality outfit from Marseille less than 12 months ago, considered a prospect, and after proving himself one of Europe’s outstanding left-backs of the season, he now looks set to move to the genuine big time with Manchester City.

“Benjamin has the advantage of being a great prospect in his position while having solid experience of Ligue 1,” sporting director Vadim Vasilyev considered when the deal was announced. “He is still very young and we want him to fully express his qualities and his potential. We believe a great deal in him.”

Over the course of the season, Mendy has become a posterboy for Monaco’s project. The champions have the intention of buying low and selling high, and with the France international under contract for another four years, they can expect to recoup £40 million for his services.

Such a princely sum is the market value of a young man who played an important role as Leonardo Jardim’s men upset Paris Saint-Germain to win a first domestic crown since 2000.

His trademark was to make incessant progress down the left flank, showing the kind of attacking instinct that had made Marcelo Bielsa such a fan during the player’s time at Stade Velodrome. The Argentine coach instructed Mendy to learn from Jeremy Morel and Rod Fanni – two players often mocked in France – at OM, but he listened and took on board the advice.

“I’ve seen people joke about it,” the Parisian told Onze. “But Bielsa was serious. These are two experienced players and have played for several clubs. Away from the field they were professionals but before I was not.

“During training, young players often say: ‘No, I already know how to do it, so I won’t do it thoroughly.’ “But that’s not the right attitude. Always give everything. And by doing the maximum, you get to go higher.”

Of course, in the modern era, it is essential for full-backs to be able to show sufficient energy to patrol the length of the field, but there have been none who have produced the relentless quality in the final third of Mendy.

He might not have scored in Ligue 1 last term – the only member of Monaco’s regular starting XI not to find the target – but his crossing from open play was unremittingly world class. Deliveries were persistently put into incredibly dangerous areas, with Mendy’s ability to shape the ball proving a nightmare for defences as it allowed him to drop crosses between the goalkeeper and the rearguard.

What was perhaps most impressive about this particular aspect of his game, though, was his ability to produce such quality while sprinting time and again.

His complicity with Thomas Lemar and Radamel Falcao has been excellent, and there can be little doubt that he has been aided by the striker. “He had the good idea to come to see me at the beginning of the season so we could invent a code to help me know where to place my crosses,” he said.

“I remember what he told us before the preliminary round of the Champions League last summer. He said that Atletico did not have the best players, but because of their desire and heart, they had one of the best teams. Today we can see the cause and effect of their journey.”

As an attacking full-back, it is easy to see why the likes of Pep Guardiola would be attracted to him.

While he has contributed impressively on the field, he has also been the heart and soul of the dressing room away from it. He has been known to put ice cubes in his team-mates socks and play other such practical jokes, while he is also the dressing room DJ. Additionally, at just 22, he was one of three players responsible for negotiating the team’s bonuses.

It is, therefore, clear to see why he is held in such esteem by the Monegasques. On the field, he has worked hard and developed even further than they could have hoped in a short period of time, and away from it, he quickly established himself as part of the glue that held the side together.

Their loss will be City’s gain.

I've nothing to prove to 'frustrated' Mourinho - Smalling

    chris-smalling-cropped_3ydhplt06g8411zt7cf8tzhao.jpg

Chris Smalling puts Jose Mourinho's criticism of him down to frustration and insists he has nothing to prove to the Manchester United manager.

Mourinho hit out at Smalling last season, suggesting after a November match with Swansea City that the defender was not willing to play through pain, a problem later revealed to be a broken toe.

The United boss also hit out at the centre-back and team-mate Phil Jones for the speed of their recoveries after they both suffered injuries in the same training session while on England duty in March.

Smalling has not received an apology from Mourinho but feels the manager was just showing his frustration in a professional manner, adding that his injury absence also annoyed him.

"No, it's just professional," Smalling told reporters when asked if Mourinho had said sorry."All of us are professionals and no player wants not to play. That was all just [him being] professional – get on with the rehab and then get out as quickly as you can.

"I think that was directed at everybody. We had a lot of injuries at that time and he was frustrated that quite a lot of players weren't available.

"I think in the Chelsea game [in October] I proved that I would play with injections. As players, it is not about always being 100 per cent. It's about going on the pitch and doing a job."I had done the injury, I played on and it turned out there was a break. I had a couple of injections but it got worse and that's when I had the layoff.

"You always want to push yourself because you don't want to let the fans or players down. Obviously he didn't know the full extent at that time. I don't think he knew the full picture then and once it was cleared up it was all good."

On the double injury with Jones, the 27-year-old added: "We don't hold anything back, either for our clubs or on international duty, so injuries are going to come. "It was unfortunate that we are obviously from the same club. That's been the story of this season, unfortunately. I've been lucky in previous seasons not to be too injury-prone.

"The manager has shown his frustration but we [injured players] are just as frustrated."When I'm sitting down with the manager and the medical staff, we set out a timeline and then we try to shave it and push and push.

"It's good when he shows that frustration because it shows he wants you back out on that pitch. If he wasn't interested, he would just leave you alone and he wouldn't say any of these things.

"So I take it as a positive, as a challenge to get back as quickly as I can – which I would have done anyway, regardless of whatever was said."I don't think I've got anything to prove as such. I think he knows my character, he knows what type of player I am and that's not changed."

Ederson completes €40m move to Manchester City

    ederson-benfica_eej4qnhl9cqn1j76rmyqlmjnb.jpg

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Ederson from Benfica for €40 million.

The 23-year-old becomes the second most expensive goalkeeper of all-time, behind Gianluigi Buffon who joined Juventus from Parma for €53m.Ederson had long been linked to the Premier League side, having impressed at Benfica in just his first full season as a regular starter.

Goal reported at the start of the month that Ederson's move had been completed, with the former Sao Paulo player signing a six-year contract to become City's second signing of the summer. And City announced that the deal is official on Thursday, with Ederson revealing his excitement at making a dream club true.

“I like everything about Manchester City," he told their website. "This is a great club, the league they have here in England and they have amazing fans and they play splendid football. I have always had the dream to play in English football and now I'm going to make it true.“With Pep Guardiola, City are growing more and more. He is putting in place a young team for the future. Those were important factors in making my decision.

“Manchester City has an amazing squad. I think they managed to have a good season. Next season, we will have to be focused to achieve the goal of winning trophies.”Meanwhile, director of football Txiki Begiristain said City have signed one of the best in his position.

“We are delighted to bring Ederson to Manchester City. He is one of the best young goalkeepers in the Europe and he is an important addition to the squad for next season and the coming seasons," he said.“He is young, has all the qualities you could want as a top-class goalkeeper and I think he’ll fit in really well to our squad.”

I did my best to show gratitude to Zidane, says Real Madrid goalkeeper Navas

    keylor-navas-cropped_1t98his53te371qspwb1qypr28.jpg

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas says head coach Zinedine Zidane has instilled him with a huge amount of confidence.

The 30-year-old's form came under scrutiny at times during the 2016-17 season and Madrid are reportedly looking for a long-term replacement in the No.1 spot.Manchester United's David de Gea has been heavily linked, although reports in England and Spain have suggested that he will not be leaving this year, while AC Milan's Gianluigi Donnarumma is another rumoured target.

But Navas, who missed the first few weeks of the season with an Achilles problem before claiming his starting spot back for the remainder of the campaign, insists that Zidane has made him feel at ease with life at Santiago Bernabeu.

"I started the season injured and it took a lot out of me to recover. I had every intention of making it easier but it wasn't like that," he told a news conference ahead of Costa Rica's World Cup qualifier with Panama."Now, I feel really strong on a sporting and spiritual level and I'm happy with the titles we won because they're not easy.

"Confidence is always important. I always have to thank the people who supported me. I must say thank you to Zidane and one way of showing gratitude is to play the best possible so that his decisions are backed up.

"Everyone likes to have people who support you in tough moments."Navas made 41 appearances in all competitions as Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup, the Club World Cup, La Liga and the Champions League.

Chelsea told to pay £100m for Lukaku as champions struggle to replace Diego Costa

    romelu-lukaku-everton_lhw9h4ko42ch15lkxgvn916bx.jpg

Chelsea have made Romelu Lukaku their top target to succeed Diego Costa, but are far from reaching an aggrement as Everton stand firm on their £100 million valuation, Goal understands.

The Premier League champions refuse to pay the full fee Everton are demanding, but it is thought Lukaku has agreed with his agent to prioritise a return to Stamford Bridge over a move to Manchester United.Chelsea are willing to hold out for a better deal, but one is not imminent despite the 24-year-old declaring that he had made a decision over his future.

They are keeping the lines of enquiry open with Alvaro Morata, who Antonio Conte rates very highly. The Real Madrid striker has drawn serious interest from United and AC Milan and could leave the Champions League winners in search of more first team opportunities.

The Blues have been working for months to find a replacement for Costa, who was told by Antonio Conte that he was no longer needed, and have made Lukaku their top target.

The Spain international has had two possible destinations ruled out as Atletico Madrid serve their ban transfer ban and Tianjin Quanjian, along with the rest of the Chinese Super League, were burdened with a 100% tax on transfers by the authorities. However, Milan are also said to be interested.

Meanwhile, Michy Batshuayi could also leave with clubs in France, Italy and England lining up for a mixture of permanent deals and loan offers.

Morata to decide future 'in a few days' amid AC Milan & Man Utd interest

    alvaro-morata-cropped_1d6c6p848qlv91pftoepmaylil.jpg

AC Milan are still in competition with Manchester United to sign Alvaro Morata, who will make a decision on his future "in the next few days", his agent says.

Morata helped Madrid to win the La Liga and Champions League titles in 2016-17 following his return to the club from Juventus, but started only 14 league games.

United are reportedly making a move for the 24-year-old as a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Milan appear close to signing him, and are willing to pay €60 million.

His representative, Juanma Lopez, says the Spain international is keen to secure regular first-team football after struggling to dislodge Karim Benzema as the first choice striker in Madrid and will clear up his future in the near future.

"Alvaro is a player who wants to play a more important role," Morata's agent told Foot Mercato. "It makes sense for an attacker who has scored 20 goals. It's not enough.

"I do not know. It was a brilliant season for Real Madrid, they won so many titles. The player will make a clear and definitive decision in the next few days. I have not yet met the leaders of Real Madrid.

"[Milan's interest] existed and still exists, as for other major teams interested in a player of his calibre. He does not want to do a season like this again. It was a great season, but he wants to play more. We have not received any offers from France."
Morata returned to Madrid last summer after two years at Juventus and is contracted to the club until 2021.

England to face Venezuela in U20 World Cup final

    dominic-solanke-italy-england-u20_16lr84qjqub661h8pquu9xgg8l.jpg

England will play Venezuela in the final of the Under-20 World Cup after Dominic Solanke struck twice in a 3-1 win over Italy on Thursday.

Italy had taken the lead in the second minute through Riccardo Orsolini, but Paul Sampson's side bounced back in style to reach the final of the competition for the first time in England's history.

England launched a remarkable comeback after the interval, with new Liverpool signing Solanke scoring his first goal of the game after 66 minutes.

Sheyi Ojo's cross was palmed out by goalkeeper Andrea Zaccagno to Solanke for a simple finish and Ojo was again involved as England took the lead.

Everton attacker Ademola Lookman slotted home after Italy failed to deal with another Ojo centre, then Zaccagno was beaten too easily by Solanke's 25-yard drive as England wrapped up the match with two minutes to go.

In the first semi-final, Venezuela are through to a maiden final in any age group by triumphing 4-3 on penalties, with the new ABBA shootout system used after a 1-1 draw.

Uruguay's Nicolas De La Cruz gave his side the lead from the penalty spot, but Samuel Sosa hit a stunning free-kick to level the scores in the 91st minute and neither team could break the deadlock in extra time.

Captain De La Cruz was the villain for Uruguay, goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez blocking his kick with his right leg to send Venezuela through to a historic final in Suwon on Sunday.

Brazil will feel the loss of Neymar, says Sampaoli

    neymar-cropped_1endsyxah3noe1m602ednev57z.jpg

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli believes Brazil will feel the loss of talisman Neymar when the South American rivals do battle on Friday. The two teams meet in Melbourne for a blockbuster Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour clash, but while Lionel Messi is set to play for Argentina, his Barcelona team-mate Neymar is not part of Brazil's plans after being granted an end-of-season rest.

Sampaoli will be taking charge of the national side for the first time and feels his opponents will be short of their best without the forward to call upon. But he will not be taking the other players in Brazil's squad lightly, with Gabriel Jesus, Philippe Coutinho and Douglas Costa all involved.

"He is a very important player and definitely he is one of the best players in the world, so Brazil are going to feel the loss," Sampaoli told reporters."However, Brazil have very good players that are able to pick up the performance of the team and also perform very well without him."

Brazil will also play Australia during their trip down under, while Argentina will take on Singapore after their clash with Tite's men.

Rodriguez completes AC Milan move from Wolfsburg

AC Milan have completed the signing of full-back Ricardo Rodriguez on a four-year deal.

The Switzerland international has finalised his move from Wolfsburg in a deal that will reportedly cost Milan €17million.Milan posted footage of Rodriguez signing his contract on their official Facebook page on Thursday.

"We need players who will show a certain enthusiasm for this shirt, which is why the first thing we do after the medical is give a tour of the trophy room," said director Massimiliano Mirabelli.

:(:(:(Man Utd expected to confirm Ibrahimovic departure

Manchester United are expected to confirm Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure on Friday when the club releases its annual player retention list, Goal understands.

United are believed to have decided against offering the Swedish striker an extension to his one-year deal at Old Trafford, which expires on June 30, despite his 28-goal debut campaign.

The 35-year-old is undergoing rehabilitation after a season-ending knee ligament injury suffered in the Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht in April. And with his recovery expected to continue for a number of months, United have begun to look for a replacement in the summer transfer market.

United will announce their list of retained players at 9am BST on Friday, with Ibrahimovic the only first-team fixture whose contract is due for renewal.

The former Sweden front man played 46 games under Jose Mourinho in 2016-17 but injury ruled him out of the final 10 matches of the season, including the Europa League final win against his former club Ajax in Stockholm.

Although there is no rule restricting a club from approaching a player excluded from their retained list at a later point regarding a new deal, the list will include details of any offers already made.

Ibrahimovic was understood to be in United’s plans for 2017-18 until his season-ending injury. But with his return date expected to be some time into the upcoming campaign and a new contract potentially costing the Red Devils many millions of pounds, the club has decided against offering him a second term at the Theatre of Dreams.

If Ibrahimovic is indeed missing from United’s squad list, it could leave the Swede contemplating the end of his top-level career following spells with Malmo, Ajax, Juventus, Inter, Barcelona, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin played down reports suggesting he is nearing a return to Barcelona.Bellerin, 22, has been linked with a switch to the La Liga giants and recent reports said he had agreed terms with Barca.

But the three-time Spain international dismissed that in a Twitter post on Thursday.
"Don't believe everything you read..." Bellerin posted.

Bellerin is contracted until 2023 at Arsenal and made 33 Premier League appearances during the 2016-17 season. He left Barca for Arsenal at the age of 16 and has said the interest from the Spanish giants is "special".
