'He will always be Zlatan' - Pogba backs Ibrahimovic to return strongly

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-paul-pogba-manchester-united_iy4pvys53vf31x1n4tuojh9ow.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is believed to be heading for the exit at Manchester United, but Paul Pogba expects him to remain one of the game's best players. In his debut season at Old Trafford, Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals and supplied 10 assists before a serious knee injury ended his campaign prematurely in April.

The 35-year-old has said he wants to stay despite having "lots of offers" from other clubs, but is not expected to be retained by United.Regardless of where he ends up, Pogba is confident Ibrahimovic will continue to be a winner once he returns from injury.

"He is a player who helped us a lot from an athletic point of view as well as from the mental side on and off the pitch," Pogba told Sky Sports."He's a wonderful person, incredibly funny, I only spend great moments with him.

"On the pitch he is a winner, he added this mentality to our team."He scored a lot of goals this season, nobody would have thought that given his age."He was unlucky and suffered a bad injury but he won three trophies with us. He will always be Zlatan."

Verratti agent hints at Juventus move despite PSG's reluctance to sell

    verratti-cropped_1f00sjx1as2s71w1b40mnwmutc.jpg

Marco Verratti's agent Donato Di Campli has suggested the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is keen on a move to Juventus. The 24-year-old Verratti has a contract with PSG until 2021, but is continually being linked with a move elsewhere.

Clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juve have all been credited with an interest in signing the Italy international in recent months and his representative has now fuelled speculation that he could be on the move.

"I expect Juventus to do something special in the next transfer window," Di Campli told Tuttosport."PSG want to keep Verratti at all costs.

"But it is clear that money is not enough. Appeal is also needed and in the last four years or so PSG have not done enough to improve in that regard."Juventus are a much more attractive option because big players want to be at winning teams."

Verratti made 43 appearances in all competitions for PSG in 2016-17, but could not prevent them from being dethroned as Ligue 1 champions by Monaco, while Unai Emery's men crashed out of the Champions League in the round of 16 following a dramatic collapse against Barcelona.

Juventus, meanwhile, won the domestic double and reached the final of the Champions League for the second time in the past three seasons.

Brazil 0 Argentina 1: Mercado makes the difference on Sampaoli's debut

    4984272hp2.jpg

Jorge Sampaoli's Argentina reign began with a win as Gabriel Mercado's goal secured a 1-0 friendly victory over great rivals Brazil at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday. The defender reacted quickly after Nicolas Otamendi's header came back off the upright and tapped home to make the difference shortly before the break.

Sampaoli fielded an attacking XI in his first game as Argentina boss, including Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Paulo Dybala and Angel Di Maria.Brazil, meanwhile, were without star attacker Neymar, but Tite did name Premier League trio Gabriel Jesus, Willian and Philippe Coutinho in his line-up.

The Selecao were left to rue an astonishing miss in the second half, though, as Jesus struck the post with the goal gaping as Tite tasted his first defeat since replacing Dunga at the helm, bringing an end to a run of nine consecutive victories.

Brazil take on Australia on June 13 in another friendly, while Argentina meet Singapore before they attempt to revive their stuttering World Cup qualifying campaign against Uruguay in August.

Sampaoli's side made an encouraging start and came close to opening the scoring after just six minutes, Di Maria blasting a powerful shot against the left upright from a narrow angle after being set up by Dybala.

Brazil first threatened midway through the half when Willian escaped the attentions of his marker down the left and unselfishly squared for the unmarked Coutinho, only for the Liverpool man to take too much time and allow Otamendi to make a last-ditch block.

Di Maria then nearly surprised Weverton with an ambitious volley from the corner of the box after Gil failed to adequately clear a cross from the left, the goalkeeper only just managing to keep the winger's attempt out with his chest.

But there was no denying Argentina in the 45th minute as Mercado broke the deadlock with a calm finish from close range, reacting first to the rebound after Otamendi hit the upright following a cross from Di Maria.

Brazil went in search of the equaliser after the break and Jesus was first to try his luck when he forced goalkeeper Sergio Romero into a one-handed save with a curled shot toward the top corner from 15 yards out.

Jesus refused to give up, though, and the Manchester City man should have levelled the scoring at the hour mark. He rounded Romero after a brilliant throughball from Fernandinho, only to then hit the post, with Willian rattling the other upright from the rebound.

And those misses would prove to be costly for Tite's men as the Argentina defence held firm in the remainder of the game to get Sampaoli off to a triumphant start.

Spalletti appointed as Inter manager on two-year contract

    luciano-spalletti-roma_c1f8tptupcq01s45sz0pc7426.jpg

Inter have announced the appointment of Luciano Spalletti as the club's new head coach, the former Roma boss signing a two-year deal.Spalletti left Roma despite leading his team to second place in Serie A last season, setting a new club points record although they finished four points behind champions Juventus.

The 58-year-old takes over from interim coach Stefano Vecchi, who was installed at San Siro following the May sacking of Stefano Pioli, who is the new coach of Fiorentina.

Spalletti will be presented to the media at a news conference on Wednesday having been given the chance to lead the club by new owners, Chinese company Suning Holdings Group.

He started his coaching career at Empoli, leading the club to back-to-back promotions to Serie A, before short spells with Sampdoria, Venezia, Udinese and Ancona.A return to Udinese in 2002 saw him lead the club to Champions League qualification, after which he was appointed by Roma for the first of his two spells.

Spalletti won two Coppa Italias and was named Coach of the Year twice in his first four years at Stadio Olimpico before a switch to Zenit, where he claimed two Russian Premier League titles, returning to Roma in January 2016.

    :(:(:sorry:Ibrahimovic released by Man Utd

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-manchester-united_60ufl8ypu6jd1admxpjeb543s.jpg

The Premier League have confirmed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been released by Manchester United.

The Swedish striker suffered a cruciate ligament injury in United's Europa League quarter-final win over Anderlecht in April and missed the final 10 matches of the season.Goal reported on Thursday that Ibrahimovic was set to be let go by Jose Mourinho's side, despite an impressive 28-goal campaign following his move from PSG last summer.

United had the option to extend the 35-year-old's contract by an extra year, although the knee injury, which forced him to miss the Europa League final win over former club Ajax, has ultimately made up the club's mind.

Despite having undergone successful surgery, it is expected to take moths before Ibrahimovic will be in a position to return to action.Mourinho has subsequently decided against waiting for the veteran attacker to recover, with the club looking for a replacement in the summer transfer window.

As exclusively revealed by Goal earlier on Friday, Alvaro Morata could join the Red Devils, with Chelsea having cooled their interest to focus their attentions on signing Romelu Lukaku.

The 24-year-old is willing to leave Real Madrid after failing to cement a regular place in the starting XI at the Bernabeu with United and AC Milan now battling it out for his signature.

As for Ibrahimovic, his agent Mino Raiola has suggested that the Swede is keen to remain in the Premier League, opening the door to the former Barcelona man joining one of United's rivals.

:(He came, he saw, he contributed - Zlatan has helped tee up Man Utd for future success

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-manchester-united_20aj0tiv4u3z1frrmk8bantnj.jpg

“I came like a king, left like a legend,” said Zlatan Ibrahimovic when parting ways with Paris Saint-Germain last summer. He leaves Manchester United with his status as one of the great figures of the modern era bolstered, but his career record at Old Trafford is destined to carry an asterisk forever more.

United confirmed on Friday through the publication of their official player retention list that Ibrahimovic has not been offered an extension to his initial one-year contract. The decision comes after the Swede sustained a knee ligament injury in April which is likely to delay any potential comeback until the start of 2018.

Handing a lucrative new 12-month deal to a striker who turns 36 in October and cannot play for the first half of the contract was never really an option for United. Bringing him in in the first place was a calculated gamble at a time when they needed short-term results to get them back to the top table. But in 2017-18, with a Champions League campaign to negotiate and a Premier League assault to mount, Ibrahimovic would have been a passenger.

It is better that it ends this way. Zlatan came in and made a significant mark, converting former critics into begrudging fans with 28 goals in 46 appearances in a 2016-17 season which seemed destined to end with a fairytale finale in the Europa League showpiece in Stockholm until he was struck down in the last eight against Anderlecht.

As had happened at Inter, Milan and PSG, Zlatan quickly became United’s talisman. The winner in the Community Shield on his full debut set a pace he would maintain for most of his spell. He netted twice on his return to Wembley in February’s EFL Cup final and his best scoring run before Christmas sparked United’s best form of the campaign. This was not the flat-track bully many had him down as. Instead it was the big man standing up to the big occasion that United had lacked in recent years.

But, just as the club’s season was littered with question marks, so was Ibra’s suitability to United in the longer term. When he wasn’t finding the net there were regular questions as to whether he was actually helping or hindering Jose Mourinho’s quest to rebuild United as a force. His conservation of energy for short, sharp, telling spells in games didn’t seem to fit with the team’s desire for quality possession.

Perhaps it was the right club at the wrong time for Ibra. Had he come into the kind of setup Sir Alex Ferguson oversaw until 2013, he would have found an outfit ready to win. Maybe if he had a year or two more on his side, he would have gone on to be an unqualified success with Mourinho. The 2016-17 assignment just didn’t quite fit in comparison, and just as United's treble success came with an asterisk without a Premier League or Champions League into the bargain so too does Ibra's record at Old Trafford.

His age dictated that he was one bad injury from the end of the journey and it just so happened that he suffered exactly that. Zlatan will now be remembered fondly by all United fans, but with a nagging feeling of a job not quite done.

It is nobody's fault really that the relationship has come to an end without a bigger triumph, but if United do go on to better things then Zlatan undoubtedly deserves his slice of the credit. He hasn't won 33 career titles by accident, and his winning aura was what attracted Mourinho to him in the first place.

He came, he saw, he contributed. Ibrahimovic won over plenty of English critics, but was never likely to conquer the Premier League all by himself.

Netherlands 5 Luxembourg 0: Sneijder scores on record-breaking appearance

    wesley-sneijder_3yb86j3einve1go28jswfd7fc.jpg

Wesley Sneijder was on target as he became the most-capped Netherlands international in a 5-0 World Cup qualifying win against minnows Luxembourg in Rotterdam on Friday.

Coach Dick Advocaat was leading his country for the first time in his third spell in charge and Oranje were desperate for a victory, starting the game fourth in Group A, six points adrift of leaders France.

Against such modest opposition a Netherlands win always looked inevitable, but Bulgaria's shock loss in Belarus and Sweden's 2-1 victory over France in Stockholm has rejuvenated their seemingly slim hopes of qualifying for Russia 2018.

Arjen Robben was on target against Luxembourg in November and he opened the scoring for his side after 21 minutes at De Kuip, running on to Wesley Hoedt's pass to finish easily.

But it was always likely to be Sneijder who stole the spotlight and he picked out the bottom corner with a terrific 20-yard drive to double the lead before half-time and mark his 33rd birthday in some style.

Georginio Wijnaldum added a powerful third before Quincy Promes headed in the fourth and Vincent Janssen scored a penalty after being brought down by goalkeeper Ralph Schon as Netherlands wrapped up an important three points easily.

Robben should have got Advocaat's latest reign off to a flying start in the first minute after working a neat one-two with Janssen, but his shot was blocked by Schon's legs.Janssen had a snapshot saved and Luxembourg briefly threatened at the other end before Robben broke the deadlock, as he did in his side's 3-1 win in Luxembourg.

Hoedt won the ball back in midfield and swapped passes with Sneijder before freeing Robben, the winger running through on goal to slot in his 33rd international goal – equalling the tally of the iconic Johan Cruyff. And in a low-tempo game a burst of quality from Sneijder on his big day lit up the match.

Janssen linked up with Memphis Depay, who fed Sneijder just outside the penalty area and the playmaker arrowed a gorgeous strike into Schon's bottom-right corner.

Kevin Strootman should have made it 3-0 but the Roma midfielder failed to convert a brilliant Sneijder free-kick that was delivered wickedly into the danger zone.

Luxembourg were gifted a golden chance to reply in stoppage time after a dreadful Jasper Cillessen pass to Strootman, but the goalkeeper made amends by saving from forward David Turpel.Netherlands chances continued after the interval, Schon making a brilliant flying diving save to his right to tip Robben's swerving effort around the post, before the offside flag denied Janssen.

Luxembourg's youngest ever player Vincent Thill then reacted furiously to his substitution after 54 minutes, the 17-year-old booting over a kit bag before sullenly taking his place on the bench. With Luxembourg's resistance crumbling Wijnaldum thumped home a loose ball in the box for his side's third goal, and there was more to follow.

A downward Promes header from Stefan de Vrij's right-wing cross beat Schon, before Sneijder departed to a standing ovation on his landmark appearance having surpassed Edwin van der Sar's 130 appearances for Oranje. With six minutes remaining, Janssen was sent down in the box by goalkeeper Schon and crashed in the subsequent penalty to complete the rout.

Next up for Advocaat's men is France away in August in a blockbuster match likely to be decisive for their World Cup chances, with three points now separating the top three teams in a tight Group A.

Sweden 2 France 1: Toivonen scores from halfway line to seal stunning victory

    toivonen-cropped_13j3dmlcgj89510gamxvbdk8j4.jpg

Ola Toivonen scored from the halfway line in the third minute of stoppage time to punish a dreadful error from Hugo Lloris and give Sweden a 2-1 victory over France in World Cup qualifying.

Lloris miscued a clearance, allowing Toivonen to seal victory in spectacular fashion after the game appeared destined to end in a draw.Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud had earlier followed up his hat-trick against Paraguay last time out with a wonderful volley to put France in front in Stockholm.

But Jimmy Durmaz equalised for Sweden just before half-time with his first international goal since October 2014.And the amazing late drama means Sweden move above France at the top of Group A as the race for Russia continues.

In a competitive group, Netherlands are now only three points off top spot courtesy of their win against Luxembourg. Bulgaria are fourth, just four points behind Sweden - who sit at the summit on goal difference from Didier Deschamps' men - despite suffering a surprise loss in Belarus.

A quiet first half-hour saw Dimitri Payet and Mikael Lustig miss the target from half chances at either end, but the match burst into life prior to half-time.

First, Giroud squandered a golden chance by heading wide from inside the six-yard box, Sweden captain Andreas Granqvist doing just enough to put him off after great work from Benjamin Mendy down the left to create the chance.
But the striker quickly made up for that miss, putting Les Bleus ahead in impressive fashion after 37 minutes.

Payet's cross from the right was only half-cleared by Jakob Johansson to the corner of Sweden's box, where Giroud took one touch to set himself up before smashing a volley into the top corner, giving home goalkeeper Robin Olsen no chance.Sweden hit back two minutes before the break with a fine goal of their own. Ludwig Augustinsson's cross from the left found its way to Durmaz and the winger smashed a first-time left-footed finish past Lloris into the bottom corner.

Antoine Griezmann swooped to head a Moussa Sissoko cross straight at Olsen after the break, before Paul Pogba sent a curling effort narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

France were looking the more likely side to find a winner and Olsen had to repel an ambitious Griezmann free-kick, but Sweden still possessed some threat, with Johansson sending a 30-yard drive just off-target and a dipping Emil Forsberg set-piece forcing Lloris into action.

Deschamps brought on Monaco stars Kylian Mbappe and Thomas Lemar for their competitive debuts in the closing stages, but there were no major chances for either side until a stunning twist in the tail.

Lloris – who was under pressure from substitute Sebastian Larsson - scuffed a dreadful clearance to Toivonen on the halfway line and the Toulouse forward punished him with an extraordinary strike to win it for the hosts.

Latvia 0 Portugal 3: Ronaldo stars as Santos' side cruise to victory

    ronaldo-cropped_ssot6dw4fdet1etmrbw8l9okm.png

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his incredible run of form as he scored twice and created another to ensure Portugal consolidated second place in World Cup Qualifying Group B with a convincing 3-0 win over Latvia.

Fresh from leading Real Madrid to Champions League glory with a brace against Juventus in Cardiff last weekend, Ronaldo was in inspired form once again as his predatory instincts came to the fore in an entertaining encounter in Riga.

Having twice been denied by the superb Andris Vanins, the 32-year-old was in the right place at the right time to tuck in Portugal's opener on the stroke of half-time.
Another point-blank header saw Ronaldo double his tally 63 minutes in, before he teed up strike-partner Andre Silva for Portugal's third soon after.

It adds to what has already been a remarkable campaign for the former Manchester United man, who has now netted 53 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions this term, while setting Portugal up perfectly for their maiden appearance in the Confederations Cup.

Ronaldo's inspired display was not enough to lift Portugal up to top spot in Group B, however, with Switzerland staying three points ahead courtesy of their win over the Faroe Islands.

Latvia started brightly, though it was Portugal who should have opened the scoring inside 12 minutes - veteran defender Bruno Alves unable to beat Vanins from close range.Ronaldo, on the fringe of proceedings in the opening stages, was the next to test Vanins, who did brilliantly to tip the Madrid star's venomous strike over the bar.

Vanins' contest with Ronaldo continued after the half-hour mark, Latvia's goalkeeper stooping low to his right to keep out another wicked effort from the Portugal captain.Ronaldo was not to be denied a third time, however.

Having stayed forward following a free-kick, Jose Fonte rose highest to head Raphael Guerreiro's cross goalwards and, though the post came to Latvia's rescue, Ronaldo was on hand to nod home from inside the six-yard box. While Ronaldo continued to pepper Vanins' goal at the other end, Rui Patricio finally had a save to make shortly before the hour-mark, reacting well to parry away Olegs Laizans' free-kick.

William Carvalho squandered a fine opportunity to double Portugal's lead soon after, but Ronaldo made no such mistake moments later.Ricardo Quaresma's deflected cross left Vanins flat-footed, with Ronaldo again perfectly positioned to take full advantage with a cushioned header from under the crossbar.

And the result was put beyond all doubt four minutes later - Ronaldo turning provider with a superbly-weighted pass into Silva, whose first-time finish found the bottom-left corner.

Ronaldo was denied a penalty and then found the side-netting as he searched for a hat-trick, but it mattered little as Portugal cruised to a simple victory.

Estonia 0 Belgium 2: Mertens, Chadli see Martinez's men safely past 10-man hosts

    mertens-cropped_1tuwwwhdy6wum1ewo6tigq3gjx.jpg

Belgium continued their unbeaten run in World Cup qualifying as goals from Dries Mertens and Nacer Chadli secured a comfortable 2-0 win over 10-man Estonia to enhance their control of Group H.

Roberto Martinez's side dominated the entire match and, although they produced a somewhat flat performance in which they failed to make the most of their chances, never looked like slipping up as they opened up a four-point advantage over Greece, who drew 0-0 at Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Estonia were 3-0 down by the 25th minute when the two sides met back in November and they were successful in producing an improvement as they frustrated Belgium for the first 30 minutes.

But the Red Devils' patience paid off just after the half-hour mark, as Mertens – who scored twice in last year's 8-1 win – tapped in from close range and then a harsh straight red card for Artjom Dmitrijev on the stroke of half-time left Estonia with a mountain to climb. As a result, the second period only proved to be even more one-sided, with Belgium seeing a flurry of chances kept out by Estonia goalkeeper Mihkel Aksalu.

The impressive Aksalu was eventually beaten for a second time, however, as Chadli wrapped things up late on to ensure Belgium cruised on to 16 points from six matches.Belgium unsurprisingly took the early initiative as they dictated proceedings and kept Estonia camped around their own penalty area.

The hosts' compact backline meant that Belgium were a little restricted in attack, however, with Mousa Dembele's long-range effort in the 11th minute indicative of some early frustration as they failed to carve their way through.Estonia almost crafted a good chance of their own 12 minutes later, but Sergei Zenjov failed to connect with Siim Luts' teasing left-wing delivery.

Belgium were not kept at bay much longer, though. Aksalu spilled Kevin De Bruyne's sweeping cross from the right and Mertens was on hand for the simplest of finishes with just over half an hour played.

Romelu Lukaku should have doubled the lead just before the break, only for the reported Chelsea target to shoot straight at Aksalu when one-on-one.

Estonia's slim hopes of a revival were then effectively ended a few moments later by Dmitrijev's sending off for a strong, but seemingly controlled, tackle on Marouane Fellaini. Belgium's superiority remained constant in the second half and Aksalu was forced into action just after the restart, atoning for his previous error with a fingertip save to deny Jan Vertonghen.

He made another smart stop shortly after, stopping Chadli's miscued cross creeping inside the left-hand post.

The Belgium onslaught showed no signs of letting up, but Aksalu was thwarting them single-handedly, with the 32-year-old told making fine stops to prevent Fellaini, Yannick Carrasco and De Bruyne from all extending the visitors' lead.

Vincent Kompany also went close to a rare goal as he met a corner with a volley, but again Aksalu was in the right place to keep the Manchester City star out.Aksalu could not deny Chadli, however, as the winger slotted a cool finish beyond him after being released into the right side of the area with four minutes to play.

Konstantin Vassiljev almost gave the home crowd something to cheer about when his 30-yard screamer looked destined for the top-left corner, but Thibaut Courtois was rescued by the crossbar to keep his clean sheet intact.

Manchester United a dream move, says Lazio star Anderson

    felipe-anderson-lazio_1qlj8e6ra4kp51rzv5k4wwt9qr.jpg

Lazio star Felipe Anderson has admitted he would love to play for Manchester United. The highly-rated winger was rumoured to be the subject of a £47 million bid from the Red Devils last February, but no deal was agreed and the Brazilian stayed put.

Anderson, who recorded 14 assists last season, told Sport TV that he still has ambitions of moving to England.“Every player dreams of playing for a team like United,” he said."After my season that was very good in the second year, there has always been a lot of speculation."If an opportunity shows up, or when I present myself at Lazio, I have to present myself very well.”

However, the 24-year-old also said that he didn’t want to think about his future just yet.“I leave it with my sister who takes care of my things, with my agents,” he continued."I’m enjoying my vacation now, I don’t even want to think about it.

"Of course it’s my career, my future, but I know the work I’ve done, and even what I have to do on vacation.”

'He's a great leader' - Lloris taps Kane to succeed as England captain

    hugo-lloris-harry-kane-toby-alderweireld-tottenham_1h6sid09r5z4y1oll6zn0ecvm8.jpg

Hugo Lloris has no doubt that Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane will make a good England captain. The captaincy has been bestowed upon the 23-year-old by Gareth Southgate for the Three Lions' World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Saturday.

And Spurs captain Lloris was full of praise for his club's star man, having watched him step into the role in the goalkeeper's absence on occasion. "I can only talk positively about Harry. He's a great leader with Tottenham, he's a great man and he's a great player," Lloris told reporters after France's 2-1 loss in Sweden on Friday.

"Obviously his destiny is to be one of the best strikers for England and hopefully he will get success with the armband."Lloris said he believes his team-mate's traits on the pitch for Tottenham will translate to the international stage, where Kane has already amassed 17 caps.

"When he's on the pitch, he's always positive, he is working hard for the team," Lloris said. "He is very involved in the squad and I'm sure he will do it in the same way with England national team.

"I think the responsibility is not only on his shoulders. It's about leaders."They have a lot of young players but with the capacity to be leaders and hopefully they will get success under Harry."

Stand-in captain Harry Kane struck deep into injury time as England rescued a 2-2 draw in a dramatic finale to Saturday's World Cup qualifying contest against old rivals Scotland.

It looked as though the Three Lions were on course for a routine three points when substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was the beneficiary of poor goalkeeping from Craig Gordon with 20 minutes remaining.

However, Hampden Park erupted in the 87th minute when Leigh Griffiths curled home a 25-yard free-kick for his first international goal, before lightning struck twice in the final minute of normal time as another set-piece from the Celtic star put Scotland on the brink of a famous Group F victory.

The drama was not finished, though, as Kane – wearing the armband in place of the absent Wayne Rooney – met Raheem Sterling's swinging cross to silence the home fans.

A draw means Gareth Southgate's men have left the chasing pack an opportunity to gain ground, with Slovenia three points back in second, while Slovakia will close within two by beating Lithuania.

For Scotland, the late heartbreak means their chances of automatic qualification remain remote at best with the gap to England at six, while they are three points off second.

After an impeccable minute's silence was held for the victims of the London terror attacks, a lively Hampden Park witnessed Scotland start with plenty of gusto.Joe Hart was largely a bystander in the England goal, though, with Griffiths' tame 20-yard effort easily held.

England initially struggled for fluency until Kane expertly took down Eric Dier's long pass and lashed a half-volley over the crossbar.Shortly after, Kane failed to sort out his feet after Adam Lallana brilliantly weaved his way into the area to set up the Tottenham striker.

Scotland almost shot themselves in the foot when Gordon rushed off his line and the goalkeeper's poor header fell to Kane, whose lob was nodded away by Kieran Tierney and Marcus Rashford's follow-up was deflected wide.

The home side had a lucky escape shortly after the restart when Jake Livermore's strike deflected off Charlie Mulgrew and struck the post. But England made the breakthrough with 20 minutes remaining.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had been on the pitch just five minutes, brilliantly waltzed into the area from the right and struck a left-foot shot at an unsighted Gordon, who could only palm the effort into the top-right corner.

Then came an incredible end to the match. Griffiths levelled the scores with a brilliantly executed free-kick that beat Hart to his left, the first time that England have conceded on the road to Russia. A second Griffiths set-piece three minutes later then sailed past Hart at the other side of the goal.

But, just at Scottish voices were at full volume, England silenced the home fans. Dier's free-kick was well saved, but the ball was recycled and substitute Sterling's brilliant cross from the left was side-footed home on the volley by Kane, with Gordon left flat-footed.

Captain Kane gets England out of jail but Ballon d'Or wannabe needs more support

    hd-harry-kane-england_1cd2hc6cegmyn1jjispypaijlx.jpg

If England needed a wake-up call as they cruise towards Russia 2018, they received it at Hampden Park, where they were held to a 2-2 draw by Scotland in what will be remembered as one of the most unusual clashes in the history of international football’s oldest fixture.

For much of the match, things appeared to be drifting towards a rather dour scoreless draw, only for substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to strike midway through the second half. The prospects of a Scottish equaliser seemed scant, let alone them turning the game on its head, yet two fine Leigh Griffiths free-kicks in the space of three minutes did just that.

But, with the hosts on the brink of an unlikely and historic victory, Harry Kane was the benefactor of some benevolent defending to level matters in stoppage time.
In the absence – presumably prolonged – of Wayne Rooney, the 23-year-old Tottenham striker has been cast as Gareth Southgate’s new captain.

He came into this game buoyant, having finished the season in prolific form, but while he was the most effective of an England attack that looked blunt for much of the encounter, the manager must work out a solution to get more from his general.

Kane spent much of the game on the periphery, left isolated by those selected to supply him ammunition. Adam Lallana and, particularly, Marcus Rashford were ineffective in the wide areas, while in the heart of the field Dele Alli failed to link sufficiently with his club-mate.Going into the Glasgow encounter, he failed to hide his high expectations. “Five in 17 isn’t terrible but if I can get a hat-trick at the weekend … that ratio won’t look so bad,” he told the media.

Ultimately, Kane only had three clear sights of goal over the course of the encounter, but that was more than his team-mates combined. He will feel he should have done more in the first half after doing well to pull down a cross, while he made the most of a complicated situation in the second to get away a fine header that Craig Gordon did well to keep out.

His telling contribution was left until deep in stoppage time, when a lack of Scottish concentration allowed him space just six yards out to fire into the net.

It had been anticipated that Kane’s return to action for the Three Lions – his first appearance under Southgate – would have been the catalyst for a more dynamic offensive display, yet England proved to be stunted and directionless for much of the game against a Scotland defence that has been their weakness for several years now.

But what is worrying for the England manager is that this is no one-off when playing away from Wembley. Prior to Saturday’s clash, they had scored only twice in their previous five matches that were not played under the famous arch – and one of those was a penalty against Iceland at Euro 2016.

Saturday’s check at Hampden was, then, a stern reminder to Southgate that, though his side remain well on course to reach Russia, they are by no means the finished article.

If England are to shed their reputation as a team that qualifies powerfully for tournaments but flops on the big stage, a more suitable system is required to get the best from one of the game’s most adept finishers. They got out of jail at Hampden.

Mkhitaryan scoops fifth Goal of the Month award at Man Utd for Europa League final strike

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has continued his dominance of Manchester United’s Goal of the Month award by winning it for the fifth time.

The Armenia international endured a testing start to his spell at Old Trafford following a £30 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund. He initially struggled to convince Jose Mourinho of his worth, but flourished after being welcomed into the first-team.

Mkhitaryan ended the season with 11 goals in 41 appearances, with many of those proving to be memorable efforts.A scorpion-kick against Sunderland on Boxing Day saw the 28-year-old set the tone for what was to follow, as his contribution was first acknowledged by United supporters.

Having got his hands on the prize for best goal of the month, he would relinquish it just once before the end of the season – to Jesse Lingard in March.Mkhitaryan saw strikes against Wigan, Leicester and Sunderland recognised prior to the end of the domestic season.

He then ensured that he would end the campaign on a high by hooking in an acrobatic effort against Ajax in the Europa League final which helped United to wrap up a 2-0 win.

United announced on their official website /after seeing Mkhitaryan scoop another prize: “In a poll conducted on ManUtd.com, his instinctive effort in the showpiece in Sweden earned a whopping 68% of the final vote – ahead of Josh Harrop's fine strike against Crystal Palace (21%) and Marcus Rashford's sublime free-kick against Celta Vigo (8%).

“Remarkably, it's the fifth time in the last six months that Mkhitaryan has landed the award after topping the vote with his scorpion kick against Sunderland in December and a breakaway effort against Wigan in the Emirates FA Cup in January before brilliant solo goals against Leicester City and Sunderland came out on top in February and April respectively.

“It marks an impressive debut campaign for the former Borussia Dortmund playmaker – who has not only caught the eye with his goalscoring feats alone, having found the net 11 times in all competitions, but his overall contribution and influential displays too.”

There has been no response as yet from Mkhitaryan’s former Borussia Dortmund team-mate Mats Hummels to his latest award, with the Germany international having questioned the validity of the process in March.

He posted on Twitter: “Come on, it’s like 8th time you win this. Do they even nominate other players or do you just decide which goal you want to win with?”

'Rooney still has plenty to offer England' - Gerrard talks up Man Utd forward despite Southgate snub

    wayne-rooney-steven-gerrard-england_1fh89w44fhj4b1spz6vnylb2kb.jpg

Wayne Rooney may be a peripheral figure at Manchester United and out of the England picture, but Steven Gerrard says he has plenty to offer. At 31 years of age, a man who has scored more goals for his club and country than anybody else has suddenly found game time hard to come by.

Jose Mourinho has nudged him down the pecking order at Old Trafford, while Gareth Southgate completely overlooked him in his latest Three Lions squad.Gerrard, though, believes that there is still a role for Rooney at international level, with the ex-England captain talking up the qualities of a former colleague.

He told BT Sport: “People are very quick to jump on getting older lads out of the England squad, but when it comes to tournaments it’s important you have a good blend of youth and experience.

“Wayne brings that [experience] and he has scored a heavy amount of goals at international level and that’s very difficult to replace.“Of course it’s been a difficult season for him but he’s more than capable of getting a good pre-season under his belt and coming back very strong and forcing his way back in – I have no doubt about that.”

Rooney has won 119 caps for England, while scoring 53 goals. He has graced several major tournaments, including three World Cups, but knows he needs to find regular minutes if he is to take in another showpiece event in Russia next summer.

His future at United continues to be called into question ahead of the re-opening of the transfer window, with Rooney acknowledging that he has some important decisions to make.

Gabriel Jesus suffers fractured eye socket on Brazil dutyvictor lindelof whoscored

    otamendi-gabriel-jesus_7d9xls6vvf6g1r9uchjjax8g2.jpg

Gabriel Jesus has been ruled out of Brazil’s Chevrolet Brasil Global Tour clash with Australia on Tuesday after tests in a Melbourne hospital discovered he has suffered an orbital fracture to his eye socket.

The Manchester City forward was injured in a clash with club-mate Nicolas Otamendi during Brazil’s 1-0 defeat to Argentina on Friday. The 20-year-old momentarily lost consciousness following the collision, which saw Otaemdni leap over the top of Jesus in an aerial challenge and connect with a stray elbow.

Jesus was taken to hospital immediately after match, initially as a precautionary measure, with Brazil reporting no fracture had been found. However, further tests on Saturday proved the injury slightly more serious than originally thought.

CBF doctor Rodrigo Lasmar and the national team technical coordinator Edu Gaspar made contact with the Manchester City board on Saturday to update them on Jesus’ condition.

Jesus will now fly home to Brazil and coach Tite has elected not to call up a late replacement, leaving Diego Souza likely to come in and lead the line against the Socceroos at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday.

Man Utd target Perisic will not be pressured into Inter stay by Spalletti

    ivan-perisic-inter-juventus-serie-a_19q3xh3nprvzk181ixq7yb8s9a.jpg

New Inter coach Luciano Spalletti will not block Ivan Perisic from joining Manchester United if the winger wants to leave.

The Croatia international is reported to be a top summer transfer target for the Red Devils, as Jose Mourinho seeks to bring added dynamism and creativity into Old Trafford.Inter are understandably reluctant to part with their prized assets and will hold out for the best possible price.

They will, however, not stand in the way of any player who makes it clear that they are no longer committed to the cause and wish to take on a new challenge elsewhere.

Spalletti told reporters on the Perisic rumours: “We shouldn’t convince anyone to stay at Inter. “I am already convincing others to join Inter and that is the most we can aspire to do.“If someone is not convinced, he is good to go and play where he feels more motivated.”

Inter are said to be holding out for around €50 million for Perisic. They snapped him up from Wolfsburg in 2015 for just €16 million, but handed the 28-year-old a five-year contract and intend to be handsomely compensated if that agreement is broken.

United are expected to be busy when the window opens, with Perisic just one of several options reported to figure prominently on Mourinho’s radar.

He already has the likes of Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford on his books, but further firepower in the attacking third is being sought – with the Red Devils also in the market for proven strikers after opting against extending Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s stay at the club.
