Ferdinand hoping Manchester United can seal Ronaldo return

    ronaldoferdinand-cropped_1ekzczu1s3czb14nyieeihxore.jpg

Rio Ferdinand hopes Manchester United can complete a sensational deal to take Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's future at Real Madrid looked guaranteed after lifting his third Champions League title with the club earlier this month, the Portugal international scoring twice in a 4-1 win over Juventus. That secured a double for Madrid, having already pipped Barcelona to the Liga title by three points in May.

However, allegations of tax fraud - denied by the forward - have brought Ronaldo's future into question and United have been heavily linked with a swoop for their former star.

And Ferdinand, who played with Ronaldo at United for six seasons, hopes his former club can finalise a deal for the four-time Ballon d'Or winner.
"I hope [he'll return]," the former England international is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News at an event in Belfast."I'm a Man United fan, and my kids love him, so I hope that he'll be back."But will he leave Real Madrid? I don't know."

Madrid president Florentino Perez has dismissed any talk of Ronaldo leaving the Spanish capital, stating he would only consider a deal if a club met his €1 billion buyout clause.

Raiola risks ruining Donnarumma's career by sending an 18-year-old to Real Madrid

    mino-raiola-gianluigi-donnarumma_uiko4fthvnk51fyfgbj73aa7n.jpg

A journalist once sought clarification on how to pronounce Mino Raiola's surname from the man himself."Whatever you want," the agent replied, "as long as you pay me."

In Raiola's world, everything has its price - even his own name.It is thus saddening but not in the least bit surprising that his newest superstar client, Gianluigi Donnarumma, is set to leave AC Milan. Real Madrid are the favourites for his signature, with Blancos president Florentino Perez having confirmed his club's interest in the want-away goalkeeper on Monday .

Donnarumma has supported the Rossoneri since he was a child, when his brother Antonio used to bring him home the shirts and shorts he wore representing the club's Primavera .Just under two years ago, Donnarumma was sensationally given his debut by former boss Sinisa Mihajlovic at the age of 16.

He would quickly establish himself as the Rossoneri's No.1 and, on the 12th of this very month, Donnarumma professed himself happy with his lot, revealing that he was looking for a new apartment in the centre of Milan.

It was a huge boost for fans growing increasingly concerned by the fact that their new hero had only a year left of his contract with the club."Everyone knows that my wish is to stay at Milan," Donnarumma told GQ .

Just three days later, Milan confirmed that Donnarumma had decide against signing an extension, with Raiola subsequently claiming in a bizarre 'press conference' in his kitchen in Monte Carlo that the club had created a "hostile and violent" environment that had "forced" he and his client into "taking a decision we didn't want to take".

He insisted it hadn't been a question of money - Milan had offered to make Donnarumma their best-paid player at €5 million per annum - but offered nothing more than serious yet vague accusations of death threats and bullying by way of an explanation.

Milan fans were as stunned as they were bemused: just how had the situation deteriorated so badly and so quickly? Some infuriated supporters even took to writing unfavourable reviews of the cake shop run by Donnarumma's brother-in-law on various restaurant sites!

The ire wasn't just confined to social media, though, with former Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi penning a column in the Gazzetta dello Sport in which he called Donnarumma's character into question.

"I used to respect Gigo as a kid and as a player, but I have been stunned by the lack of gratitude towards Milan,” he wrote."This decision makes me doubt not just his personal integrity, but also what his future will hold."

Certainly, Donnarumma's future now looks fraught with uncertainty. At Milan, he was to become "the pillar" on which the club's new Chinese owners wanted to build a new, exciting, young and winning team.

Who knows what will become of him in the notoriously harsh environment that is Madrid? Even Cristiano Ronaldo, much to his own frustration, has not been spared the vitriol of the Santiago Bernabeu boo boys.

In Milan, Donnarumma would have been guaranteed both love and support. When he made a gaffe against Chievo towards the tail end of last season, coach Vincenzo Montella leapt to the youngster's defence. The fans, meanwhile, continued to chant his name and it is they who have been hurt most by Donnarumma's seemingly imminent departure.

"It seems strange to hear about a hostile climate for a lad who is the first Milan player in many years to have his own song from the fans and so much love from every single Milan fan," Curva Sud Milano mused in a statement released earlier this week.“We believe there may still be a chance to rebuild things, but it’s now linked to the expulsion of those who pushed him in a bad direction, ruining his image."

That Donnarumma's image has been ruined by Raiola is beyond dispute - angry Milan fans even threw fake money at him before Italy's meeting with Denmark at the European Under-21 Championship on Sunday - the fear now is that moving to Madrid at such a young age could ruin his career.

A worried Sacchi wrote, "I want to remind him of all those who put money before all else, for example Kaka and [Andriy] Shevchenko, who left Milan for Real Madrid and Chelsea only to later bitterly regret it."

When that illustrious duo quit San Siro, they were seasoned, world-class performers - and yet they still flopped at the Bernabeu and Stamford Bridge, respectively.

The challenge facing Donnarumma would be even more arduous: winning over the most demanding fans in world football, while at the same time adjusting to a new country, culture and language - and all at the age of 18.

Donnarumma is renowned for his strong personality - Giampiero Ventura says he has rarely come across such a mature young talent - but he is still just a teenager.
As his father said earlier this year, "He is still just a boy to us."For his family's sake, we can but hope that they do not come to regret their decision to entrust Gigio's future to Raiola.

The agent has worked wonders with several clients, most notably Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whom he subjected to a unique brand of 'tough love' that the Swede himself admitted he required in order to become the best player he could be.

The management of Mario Balotelli's career has not gone quite so well yet it was Raiola who took Paul Pogba from Manchester United to Juventus, and back again, making a huge amount of money for both the midfielder and himself along the way.

And that is the point here: Raiola is excellent at what he does. He is, as Andrea Pirlo calls him, "a world-class operator", a master of the market who has both burned and repaired bridges. He has even made enemies at Real Madrid, yet he will not allow bad blood to get in the way of a good deal, which is why peace may yet be made with Milan, resulting in Donnarumma signing an even more lucrative contract.

Indeed, while he has been labelled many things - "a mafioso" and "a pain in the backside" among them - the bottom line is that he doesn't care what he's called, as long as he gets paid.

Juventus want Man Utd's Darmian to replace Dani Alves

    matteo-darmian-manchester-united-europa-league-2016-17_1muyy78oer3gh1r4zmrpiwskin.png

Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has been lined up as Juventus’ preferred replacement for Dani Alves as the Brazilian gets set to leave the Serie A champions.

The Brazilian looks destined to sign for Manchester City on a two-year contract once he has come to an agreement with Juve over the early termination of the two-year deal he signed with them in the summer of 2016.

And with the Champions League finalists resigned to losing the former Barcelona right-back, they have put Darmian squarely at the head of their list of potential targets to fill Dani Alves’ boots.

The Italy international has enjoyed a mixed spell so far at United, with Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Guillermo Varela, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and Tim Fosu-Mensah all being favoured at full-back at various stages during his two years with the club.

And while he did fight his way back into the side under Jose Mourinho towards the end of the 2016-17 campaign, even turning in an excellent performance in the Europa League final win over Ajax, Darmian could well be allowed to leave this summer as the Portuguese manager looks to bolster his squad for a serious Premier League title challenge.

Darmian spent much of his spell at Torino between 2011 and 2015 as a wing-back, and having excelled in the same position for the Italian national team he is seen as an ideal addition to a Juve side which has played primarily with a back three and wing-backs for the past six seasons.

The 27-year-old last week got married to long-time fiancée Francesca Cormanni in a ceremony close to his home town of Legnano, and he could now be set to return to his homeland for good thanks to Juventus’ interest.

Darmian cost United around £14 million when Louis van Gaal snapped him up from Torino in 2015, and he previously played for AC Milan and Palermo. He also has 30 international caps to his name and was part of the Azzurri side which beat Liechtenstein 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier earlier in June.

PSG winger Lucas Moura opens transfer door to Man Utd and Liverpool

    lucas-moura-paris-saint-germain-psg_1nij4c6wuu8s21p191wnuemicx.jpg

Lucas Moura has been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool in the past and admits that he could leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The Brazil international has spent five years in the French capital, with PSG having won the race for his signature in 2012 as he took the decision to leave Sao Paulo in his homeland. The 24-year-old has made over 200 appearances for the club, including 52 during the 2016-17 campaign.

Competition for places remains fierce, though, with Julian Draxler a direct rival for a starting berth, and Lucas concedes that he may move on if a suitable offer is tabled.“In every transfer window there is always a lot of speculation,” he told Diario De Sao Paulo.

“Actually, no offers have been made for me yet, nothing concrete. My agent has not told me about anything yet.“I have a contract until 2020. If something materialises, we will sit and analyse it. Right now, nothing is happening.

“Regarding a return to Brazil, I am not thinking about that. I have objectives I want to reach in Europe. Leaving PSG for another European club could be a possibility for me but I am under contract and I have no offers in front of me at this moment.

“If something arrives, we will see what is best for me and for the club. Right now, though, I am doing well in France.”Lucas netted 19 times in all competitions last season, with that return representing a personal best.

He penned a contract extension with PSG in June 2015 that is due to keep him at the club for another three years, but that agreement could be broken if a tempting opportunity is put to him.

Mourinho 'in compliance' with all his tax obligations

    mourinho-cropped_18zgh81oirehr1dwy4hvxjghzx.jpg

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has released a statement through his agent Jorge Mendes' company Gestifute to stress that he is "in compliance" with all his tax obligations and has not heard anything to the contrary from the Spanish tax authorities.

The former Real Madrid boss has been accused of defrauding tax authorities to the tune of €3.3million by a Spanish regional prosecutor, with a complaint filed on Tuesday.Mourinho is under suspicion of having committed two offences in relation to personal income tax, but the 54-year-old has denied any wrongdoing.

"Jose Mourinho has not received any notification with regards to the news published Tuesday. To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted Jose Mourinho or his advisers who were hired for the inspection process," a statement on the Gestifute website reads.

"Jose Mourinho, who lived in Spain from June 2010 until May 2013, paid more than €26 million in taxes, with an average tax rate over 41 per cent, and accepted the regularization proposals made by the Spanish tax authorities in 2015 regarding the years of 2011 and 2012 and entered into a settlement agreement regarding 2013.

"The Spanish government in turn, through the tax department, issued a certificate in which it attested that he regularised his position and was in compliance with all his tax obligations."

The news follows reports in Spain that suggest Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo will appear in court on July 31 in relation to separate accusations of tax fraud. Ronaldo via his representatives last week denied any wrongdoing.

Manchester United in the clear over Pogba transfer as Juventus face disciplinary proceedings

    paulpogba-cropped_1nnspfmmhnl081cvq7736xaklf.jpg

Manchester United have been cleared of any wrongdoing in the signing of Paul Pogba, but FIFA disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Juventus.

United splashed out a world-record £89million to lure the France international back to Old Trafford ahead of the 2016-17 campaign after four years at the Serie A champions.

Documents purportedly relating to the midfielder's move showed that his agent Mino Raiola stood to benefit to the tune of £41m off the deal and FIFA subsequently opened an investigation into the transfer.

World football's governing body has now made it clear United will not face potential punishment, but the agreement between Juventus and Raiola might be in breach of third-party ownership regulations.
"We can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Juventus," a FIFA spokesperson told ESPN."We cannot comment further as proceedings are ongoing.

"We can confirm that no disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Manchester United."Pogba, 24, scored nine goals in 51 appearances in all competitions for United this term, including the opener in the 2-0 Europa League final win over Ajax.

Russia to defeat Portugal - Nika the psychic polar bear predicts the Confederations Cup

    nika-the-bear_opzhqlu9q2vd12h6xia91thp5.jpg

Remember Paul the Octopus? The beloved sea creature predicted World Cup matches in 2010 with uncanny accuracy.Well Paul has a successor in the animal football prediction game: a polar bear named Nika.

The two-year-old is a resident of the Moscow Zoo. She was rescued as an orphan in a village in eastern Russia after, according to local residents, her mother was lost to poachers.Nika has taken on the mantle of the official animal predictor of the Confederations Cup, which is currently underway in her home nation.

So far, Nika has made two predictions and been correct once — she correctly chose Germany to defeat Australia and also selected Portugal to prevail over Mexico (which ultimately ended as a draw).

And now she's come out with a fresh batch of predictions, including a victory for her home country over Portugal in Wednesday's Group A clash.

Nika has also picked New Zealand to upset Mexico in the day's other match. For Thursday's Group B games, Nika has chosen Cameroon to beat Australia and Germany to defeat Chile.

Russia 0 Portugal 1: Ronaldo the difference for European champions

    ronaldo-cropped_30as9mf21oyn1wqf1jo9obw4f.jpg

Portugal went top of Group A at the Confederations Cup following a 1-0 win over Russia on Wednesday, Cristiano Ronaldo making the difference for the European champions.

The Real Madrid star found the net after just eight minutes, beating goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev with a strong header from close range, and Stanislav Cherchesov's side were unable to find a response.

Russia were high on confidence following their 2-0 win over New Zealand, whereas morale was somewhat low in the Portugal camp after they conceded a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw with Mexico.

It was all Portugal in Moscow, though, and Ronaldo eventually led his side to victory amid a tumultuous personal period off the pitch. The 32-year-old has been linked with a move away from Madrid following scrutiny over his tax affairs in Spain.Fernando Santos' men now meet New Zealand on Saturday in their final game of the group stage, while Russia face Mexico on matchday three.

Portugal made an encouraging start to the game and went a goal up in the ninth minute via Ronaldo, the Real Madrid star escaping the attention of Fedor Kudriashov at the far post before heading home from close range following a fine cross from Raphael Guerreiro.

Ronaldo continued to cause the Russian defence all kinds of trouble in the opening stages and he was unfortunate not to double Portugal's lead at the half-hour mark, Akinfeev pulling off a superb save to deny the forward from six yards out after a rapid counterattack.

The hosts first threatened late in the first half when Aleksandr Golovin reached Fedor Smolov with a low cross from the right, only for the Krasnodar star to aim his left-footed effort well wide of the Portugal goal.

New AC Milan signing Andre Silva could have added his name to the score sheet shortly after the break when he beat his marker to Cedric Soares' cross from the right, but Akinfeev miraculously kept out the striker's header with a stunning reflex save to keep Russia's hopes alive.

Portugal kept on pushing for a second and Ronaldo should perhaps have doubled his tally after being set up by Andre Gomes at the hour mark, mistiming his header and sending the ball well wide of the target instead, before he wildly blasted a shot over the crossbar minutes later as the game started to open up.

It mattered little in the end, though, as Russia lacked the individual quality to really worry Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio, the Seleccao seeing out a flurry of late pressure without any noteworthy problems.

Mexico 2 New Zealand 1: Peralta completes dramatic comeback

    peralta-cropped_1i3ww1aj2660z1f1wo0fpb9310.jpg

Oribe Peralta scored a dramatic winner as Mexico came from behind to defeat New Zealand 2-1 in Sochi and move top of Confederations Cup Group A.

After Juan Carlos Osorio made eight changes to Mexico's team, it looked like he would pay the price when Chris Wood gave New Zealand a shock first-half lead, the first time his country have scored in six Confederations Cup matches.

But Raul Jimenez's third goal in his last four internationals brought Osorio's men back on level terms after the break and Peralta's winner ensured El Tri secured victory despite star striker Javier Hernandez remaining on the substitutes' bench.

Mexico, winners of the tournament in 1999, now know a point in their final match against Russia – who lost to Portugal earlier on Wednesday – will ensure they reach the semi-finals.

New Zealand, meanwhile, crash out after a heart-breaking defeat, Ryan Thomas hitting the crossbar late on. They are yet to taste victory in 11 Confederations Cup matches. They cannot catch Mexico or Portugal – both of whom are on four points – going into their last match against the European champions on Saturday.

In an even start to the match, Giovani dos Santos was denied by a superb Thomas block after a swift Mexico counter-attack, while New Zealand's Tommy Smith had a header saved by Alfredo Talavera at the other end.

There was then huge controversy as New Zealand squandered a brilliant opportunity. Wood fended off a challenge from Carlos Salcedo and was left unmarked 18 yards out, but was unable to beat Talavera, who got down to make an impressive save.

Salcedo was injured in the incident and left the field on a stretcher as Osorio fumed on the touchline, with Hector Moreno – scorer of Mexico's late equaliser against Portugal last time out – brought on.

New Zealand were not to be denied, though, taking the lead three minutes before the break. A poor defensive clearance from Nestor Araujo led to Clayton Lewis slipping a slick pass through for Wood to finish with a first-time, right-footed strike past Talavera from 12 yards.

Mexico brought on Hector Herrera after the interval and piled on the pressure early in the second half, Giovani firing over from a glorious chance after a move that had seen Javier Aquino impressively denied by Stefan Marinovic's sharp save.

El Tri did equalise in the 54th minute, Aquino charging down the left and linking up with Marco Fabian, who in turn found Jimenez, with the striker's shot on the turn taking a slight deflection and proving too hot for Marinovic to handle.

Diego Reyes had a header saved as Mexico's pressure continued before their third substitution saw Moreno replaced by Rafael Marquez.

Mexico completed the comeback with 18 minutes remaining, the impressive Aquino getting all the way to the byline and cutting back for Peralta to beat Marinovic at his near post from seven yardsSmith had a close-range header saved for New Zealand before Jurgen Damm fired just over after his superb solo run at the other end threatened to seal victory.

Thomas curled a magnificent late strike against the bar from the edge of the area in the closing stages with New Zealand's last major chance.Mexico were denied a third when Smith made an impressive goal-line clearance after Jimenez had fired a shot past Marinovic.

Tempers frayed on both sides before the conclusion of a contest filled with incident, a rift caused by Michael Boxall's challenge on Herrera leading to three yellow cards after a VAR review as Mexico ultimately prevailed to move a step closer to the last four.

Juventus open to selling €30m Cuadrado

    juan-cuadrado-sampdoria-juventus-serie-a_1miq9r80piqir1c4nf3lcyeo73.jpg

Juventus may only have recently completed a permanent deal to sign winger Juan Cuadrado, but they could be ready to let him depart for €30 million.

The Colombia star has spent the last two seasons on loan in Turin and the Champions League finalists elected to sign him for his buyout fee of €20m on May 22.

However, head coach Max Allegri is ready to swoop for both Douglas Costa of Bayern Munich and Fiorentina’s Federico Bernardeschi.

To fund these deals, the 29-year-old Colombian could find himself sold, but Juventus will only allow him to leave for at least €30m.

The player has looked somewhat unsettled of late, with his performance levels dipping and his sending off in the Champions League final for a controversial clash with Sergio Ramos confirming that he is not currently himself.

Cuadrado could, therefore, be on the move and his agent Alessandro Lucci is exploring the possibility of a transfer to Spain or France. He would prefer to consider other offers before a switch back to the Premier League.

Mbappe not out of Arsenal's price range - Pires

    kylian-mbappe-monaco_ykj09bspkndi14tur2k61vj4y.jpg

Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes that Arsene Wenger would be willing to pay the funds to sign 18-year-old attacker Kylian Mbappe, as long as he believes he is the right player.

Monaco starlet Kylian Mbappe has attracted attention from various clubs in Europe and while his price tag is expected to fetch over £100m, Pires believes does not think that will put the manager off, despite his reputation for financial prudence.Pires, 43, who has been linked with a role as sporting director, is aware of the calibre of player the Gunners require to sign and already has a personal shortlist.

“I have a long list. Mbappe, Alexandre Lacazette, Ousmane Dembele, Thomas Lemar - this is my list, be careful. I’m not the manager but I believe in Arsene Wenger for the new season and to spend a lot of money on players. He knows the market is very difficult this summer and he has a lot of work to do but I’m confident," he said at Arsenal’s Puma home kit launch event in Kings Cross Square.

"I’m always confident. When I talk about football and the Premier League I think everything is possible. Man United spent a lot of money for Paul Pogba last summer and I think Arsenal can spend a lot of money on one player like Mbappe.A lot of teams want Mbappe, like Madrid, but there will be a difficult fight for him."

Furthermore, Pires, who won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups during his time at Arsenal and regularly trains with the first-team squad as part of his own fitness regime, has admitted that it would be a “dream” to return to the club as sporting director but says the role isn’t a priority for the Gunners right now.

He continues to have a close relationship with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and while he recently poured scorn on having a director of football at Emirates Stadium, the role appeals to Pires for a variety of reasons - although he’s not sure whether or not it will happen.

“Soon? I don’t know. But this is my dream because I love Arsenal,” Pires said.
“I have a very good relationship with the club, especially with Arsene Wenger. It’s not a priority for the club - maybe one day - but for the moment it’s not in Arsenal’s plans. The most important thing is to build a good team for next season.”

Angel Di Maria will pay a fine of £1.76 million to avoid spending time in prison after admitting to tax fraud.

The Argentine winger defrauded the Spanish government of £1.14m during his time at Real Madrid and will subsequently pay a 60 per cent fine on top of what is already owed.Di Maria admitted to two counts of fraud, which hold six-month sentences each, but will not face any jail time.

A number of elite players have been accused of fraud in recent months, including Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.Messi was similarly found guilty of evading tax on his image rights and was handed a suspended 21-month prison sentence, along with his father, Jorge.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the latest player to find himself embroiled in such a controversy - he is alleged to have failed to pay €14.7m in image rights - leading to a saga over his future at Real Madrid.

Bayern rule out Lewandowski exit amid Man Utd and Chelsea links

    robert-lewandowski-bayern-2017_cjexwnsgnnil1ul87emkzc926.jpg

Bayern Munich have issued a statement insisting that striker Robert Lewandowski will not be allowed to leave the club.

The Poland international had been linked with a move to both Manchester United and Chelsea after publicly expressing his disappointment with the Bavarians after he missed out on the Bundesliga top scorer award.

And the player's agent fuelled speculation that he could leave after revealing that Lewandowski was feeling more disappointed than ever at his situation at the club.

But Bayern have dismissed reports he could leave, warning that any club that attempts to approach the player without consulting them first will be liable for sanctions from FIFA.

A statement read: "Robert Lewandowski has a contract at FC Bayern which he recently has extended until 2021. FC Bayern does not have any thoughts about a transfer.

"There are no talks with other clubs and there won't be any. If other clubs negotiate with players who have long-term contracts they risk getting sanctioned by FIFA."Lewandowski was Bayern's top scorer last season, netting 30 goals in Germany's top flight.

He missed out on the top scorer award to Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, however, with the Gabon forward finishing up with 31 goals in the competition after his final-day double against Werder Bremen.

Mourinho keen to keep Juventus target Darmian

    matteo-darmian-manchester-united_xo5fq38chbmv1lv5syilfj4lb.jpg

Jose Mourinho is in no rush to let Matteo Darmian leave Manchester United, despite the news Juventus are gearing up to make a concerted assault for the Italian full-back’s signature.

The Bianconeri have identified Darmian as their number-one target to replace Dani Alves once the Brazilian’s departure for Manchester City has been confirmed, but Goal understands that Mourinho is ready to fight to keep the 27-year-old at Old Trafford.

Darmian has struggled to nail down a regular first-team spot during his two-year spell with United, but he won back a place as a left-back towards the end of the 2016-17 campaign and was one of the side’s stand-out players in the 2-0 Europa League final win over Ajax in May.

And that spell has helped to underline Darmian’s value to the United squad in Mourinho’s mind, with the Portuguese now keen to hold on to the Italy international defender. While the manager is likely to permit some defensive departures in the summer transfer window following the arrival from Benfica of Victor Lindelof, Darmian is currently not on Mourinho’s list of potential sales pieces.

The development will come as a blow to Juventus, who have been tracking Darmian’s progress over a number of months and have identified the natural wing-back as a perfect fit for the three-man back line, which has become their hallmark over the last six years under Antonio Conte and now Massimiliano Allegri, who used a 4-2-3-1 towards the end of last term.

Darmian was snapped up by United for around £14 million in 2015 under Louis van Gaal’s leadership, but having lost his place under the Dutchman he then found playing time difficult to come by when Mourinho first took the reins.

However, Mourinho has been impressed by Darmian’s attitude to the challenge of earning a place. As the player explained to reporters in April, he had always geared himself up for the constant battle for game time that would involve playing for Manchester United.

“Of course, when a player is in a fantastic club like Manchester United they know there is a lot of competition because there are a lot of good players,” he explained. “I say always that I work hard from the first day of the season to be ready when the manager gives me a possibility [to play]. The most important thing is when I play, to help the team and to win. That’s it.”

Deulofeu to AC Milan 'very difficult' - agent

    gerard-deulofeu-cropped_mdbc0wme5cg3zdete9j8qn5f.jpg

Gerard Deulofeu's agent has revealed a permanent transfer to AC Milan is "very difficult" at this stage as his future is in the hands of Everton and Barcelona.

The 23-year-old spent the second half of the 2016-17 campaign on loan at San Siro after he was deemed surplus to requirements by Everton boss Ronald Koeman and impressed with a string of fine performances, scoring four goals in 17 Serie A appearances.Milan are allegedly keen to sign the versatile former Barca attacker permanently, but they will have to be patient if they are to get their man.

"I cannot say much about Deulofeu's future," his agent Gines Carvajal told TMW.
"Everton and Barcelona are in charge, these two clubs will decide his future."We can only wait to see what happens. Milan could be an option, but it will be very difficult."

Deulofeu is owned by Everton, though his boyhood club Barcelona have an option to re-sign the winger and are considering bringing him back ahead of next season.
Only if Barcelona opt against signing the Spain international do Milan appear to have a shot of landing him on a permanent basis.

He is currently at the Under-21 European Championship in Poland, with Spain beating Portugal 3-1 on Tuesday to book their ticket to the semi-finals.

Juventus confirm imminent Dani Alves exit as Man City move nears

    danialves-cropped_17f6lfedscvcq1go9n46gygivc.jpg

Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed Dani Alves is set to leave the club, as Manchester City are poised to sign him.

Goal understands the right-back has agreed a two-year contract with City and Chelsea have also shown interest, with only his contract in Italy delaying a deal in the Premier League.

But Juve have revealed they will not stand in the 34-year-old's way as he aims to leave Turin with a year still left on his contract.

The Brazil international had angered fans of the Italian champions last week by stating star striker Paulo Dybala would need to leave to fulfil his potential. However, Marotta insists there is no bitterness between Juve and Alves, revealing the club would allow him to leave this close-season.

"It is not a falling out, motivation is crucial to all players," Marotta told reporters."Dani Alves has realised that he wants to try a different experience, we will consensually rescind the contract and we wish him all the best. "Sure there is bitterness for what he has said, but I confirm that there has been no fall out."

Alves has only spent one year at Juventus, winning Serie A and the Coppa Italia, while the club lost out to Real Madrid in the Champions League final earlier this month.

He had previously spent eight seasons with Barcelona, winning LaLiga six times and the Champions League on three occasions.Alves will add to the signings of Bernardo Silva and Ederson at City.Pep Guardiola was keen to add another right-back to his squad following the exits of Bacary Sagna and Pablo Zabaleta.

Donnarumma cannot say no to Real Madrid – Cassano

    gianluigi-donnarumma-ac-milan-v-as-roma-serie-a-07052017_1pkbbee96hcvf1m1um02mjwszc.jpg

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma cannot say no if Real Madrid are interested in signing him, according to Antonio Cassano.

Madrid are one of the clubs to be linked with Donnarumma after he rejected an offer to extend his Milan contract beyond 2018, the Serie A club claiming their offer was worth €50 million over five years. The 18-year-old had fake money thrown at him by angry supporters during Italy's match against Denmark at the Euro Under-21 championship last week.

Cassano, who formerly played with Milan and Madrid, offered his verdict on the shot-stopper's future, insisting a switch to Santiago Bernabeu is too good to turn down even if San Siro is the best place for him.

"If I was in Donnarumma's place, I would stay at Milan for a few more years," Cassano said to Sky Italia of the keeper, who has also been linked with Juventus and Manchester United. "It would be good for Italian football if he remained in Serie A. But it is true that if Real Madrid are there, you cannot say no."

Meanwhile, Cassano believes his former Italy team-mate Mario Balotelli, who he previously described as overrated, has found his level at Nice.Reports in France suggest free agent Balotelli – like Donnarumma a client of Mino Raiola – is close to signing a new contract that will extend his stay with the Ligue 1 club beyond the 2016-17 season and Cassano feels that would be a wise approach.

He said: "Balotelli had a good career and he is fortunate to have Mino Raiola as an agent to help him earn a lot of money. I think Nice is the size of club he belongs at."

Santos backs Ronaldo's right to snub media after Portugal win

    cristiano-ronaldo-portugal_5x6oc81ea9pz19p2l2vzj38vu.jpg

Fernando Santos defended Cristiano Ronaldo's right to give the media the brush off once again after the Real Madrid star grabbed the only goal as Portugal beat Russia 1-0 on Wednesday.

Ronaldo's eighth-minute header settled an entertaining contest at the Spartak Stadium and, although the European champions' captain did not have his finest evening, he was still named man of the match by a star struck home crowd.

The 32-year-old did, at least, attend the obligatory press conference for the winner of the award - he skipped it altogether on Sunday in Kazan - but refused to answer any questions, instead reading out a couple of bland lines about the match itself .

Ronaldo has not spoken to the media since reports emerged in Portugal of his desire to quit Madrid over a perceived lack of support from the club after Spanish authorities opened an investigation into allegations of tax fraud against the former Manchester United forward.

And, although it is believed his stance has softened slightly after being backed by Madrid president Florentino Perez this week, his future remains shrouded in mystery.

Asked about the issue, Santos was unsurprisingly standing by his captain. He said: "Do you think he should answer questions about issues outside the game?"He's here to talk about the game - full stop. He's not talking about his family, Real Madrid, nothing. He's here to talk about the game.

"I understand you're all curious, but you have to respect the personal life of the player. You will have other opportunities to talk to him and get all the answers. I think he did very well in not answering any questions."

The win moved Portugal on to four points - they drew their opener 2-2 with Mexico on Sunday - and avoiding defeat against unfancied New Zealand on Saturday in St Petersburg will be enough to see them into the semi-finals.

Santos added: "If we had scored twice like we did against Mexico it would've been better, but we also conceded two goals against Mexico which is not normal.
"In the first half we played very well with a lot of personality, except in the last 10 minutes of the first half where we became slightly enthusiastic which led to counter attacks from Russia, which caused us a few problems."

Although Ronaldo received the vote of the crowd, most observers would argue Bernardo Silva was the game's stand-out player. And, while Santos was willing to hand out some individual praise to the newly-acquired Manchester City playmaker, he stressed again the importance of the collective.

"We know Bernardo very well, he was called up to the national team some time ago in a game against Albania and we won 1-0," he said."We know him well, he knows his team-mates, we know his characteristics, we know the characteristics which adapt better to Bernardo.

"[But] the most important thing is the whole team. Thank God I have a group of players who are so concentrated and always ready to answer any situation at any moment.

"They are willing to play their hearts out for their coach."
