:(Madrid, Man United yet to hold Morata talks – Perez

    alvaro-morata-cropped_w674tm2hfn8e1pjuahv566qzw.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez insisted the La Liga champions were yet to enter negotiations with Manchester United over forward Alvaro Morata.Morata, 24, is believed to be set for a big-money move to Old Trafford this off-season as he looks for more playing time.

But Perez denied Madrid were even negotiating with United yet, while dismissing reports an agreement had been reached.

"I think we're not in negotiations with Manchester United, which is not to say that there are people around you who are talking, which is normal," he told esRadio."I have read that we have reached an agreement I do not know how many million times, but it isn't true."

Morata scored 20 goals in all competitions in his first season back at Madrid, but he made just 14 La Liga starts.

The Spain international would give Jose Mourinho a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who netted 28 times last season, if he joined United.

Perez praises 'one of the best in the world' James amid transfer talk

    james-rodriguez-cropped_8egn7daztt717mj9a1motbln.jpg

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez lauded James Rodriguez as one of the world's best amid persistent speculation over the midfielder's future.

James is largely expected to make a Madrid exit in the off-season, with Manchester United, Chelsea and AC Milan among those linked with a move. The Colombia international made just 13 LaLiga starts for Madrid in 2016-17, leading to speculation over his future.

Perez was full of praise for the 25-year-old, but said the club's interests came first.
"He is one of the best players in the world," he told esRadio."He is at Madrid... we have to match the interests of the players with ours, but prevailing those of Madrid."

James joined Real Madrid from Monaco in a big-money move in 2014, but his game time was limited last season.

New Zidane deal is Real Madrid's top priority, says Perez

    zinedinezidane-cropped_zx6q5w0uq5op1nf72ki5w46ro.jpg

Real Madrid's first priority is handing a new contract to Zinedine Zidane, says president Florentino Perez.

Perez previously said Zidane can "stay at Real Madrid for life" after guiding the club to back-to-back Champions League successes by beating Juventus in this year's final.

And tying the club's head coach to a new deal will be his first act once the 45-year-old is back at the club after a break."Sure he is safe and the first thing we are going to do after he comes back from holiday is renew him," Perez said to esRadio.

"No one knows the club and the dressing room better than him. It is an advantage that he has over the rest and that has made him succeed for 17 months.

"Many times he has said that he does not know if he will continue so that they [the press] do not ask him about the future of the players."But I would have continued with him even if we had not won."

In a wide-ranging interview, Perez also insisted an "angry" Cristiano Ronaldo would stay with Madrid, while stating it would be tough to find a place for Monaco's Kylian Mbappe among the club's star-studded squad.

Chelsea still favourites to sign Alex Sandro amid Man City and PSG links

    alex-sandro-juventus_1jcdk8av09jqf1uykuinu1w2nt.jpg

Chelsea are still a long way ahead of their rivals in the chase to sign the £60 million-rated Alex Sandro from Juventus.

Reports in Italy have suggested that the Brazilian wing-back is also wanted by Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, but Chelsea are still clear favourites to complete a deal.

Sandro is happy to make the move to west London and stands to pocket a huge pay rise that will more than double his current salary, which is less than £50,000-a-week.

Juventus aren't keen to sell but they are financially limited in comparison to the spending power of the Premier League's top clubs and are aiming to squeeze the best possible fee out of Chelsea.

Dani Alves is also leaving on a free transfer and he is expected to sign for Manchester City at the weekend, so the fee for Sandro will go towards bringing in replacements.

City have been interested in signing Sandro ever since Pep Guardiola took over at the club but they are in negotiations for Monaco's Benjamin Mendy and won't look to sign both players.

PSG are aiming to spend big after a disappointing season, but due to having other transfer priorities, they won't be able to compete with the fees that Chelsea are willing to pay for Sandro.

Borussia Dortmund's Raphaël Guerreiro is PSG's target at left-back and he is expected to cost half of what is being asked for Sandro as the French club put the majority of their budget towards trying to clinch a deal for Kylian Mbappe. Chelsea's biggest problem remains their negotiations with Juventus but there is still confidence that a deal will ultimately be secured.

Martial denies Man Utd exit rumours

    anthony-martial_dqyudspvo78h12e0vv071q07d.jpg

Anthony Martial has dismissed claims that he has asked to leave Manchester United.

It had been reported that the France international was on his way out of Old Trafford after starting just 18 Premier League games under Jose Mourinho last season. However, the 21-year-old has dismissed the idea on social media, tweeting: "The rumours are false."

The former Monaco star had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for months, with Sevilla showing an interest in December.

His agent reiterated that the France international wants to remain at United earlier this month, saying: “Martial has two years left and there is no reason for him to leave Manchester just now".Meanwhile, Mourinho backed Martial towards the end of the season but urged him to play to the manager's preferred style.

"Do I think Anthony is a player with great potential? Yes, I think. Do I think he can play successfully for me? Yes, I think. But he needs to give me things that I like very much," he said in April.

After an impressive display against Burnley that month, Mourinho praised him again."If he wants to become a very special player – [and] he can do that – then he has to go in a certain direction and he showed this attitude and appetite," he said.

Martial joined United from Monaco in 2015 and has scored 25 goals in 91 appearances in all competitions. He is contracted to the Red Devils until 2019.

Van Dijk and Cedric 'not for sale', Southampton insist

    virgil-van-dijk-southampton_1uvgc656nwj2p1j7c61ek5amsc.jpg

Southampton insist Virgil van Dijk and Cedric Soares are "not for sale" amid reports the club have agreed with new manager Mauricio Pellegrino that they will not allow star players to leave.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea are being linked with swoops for Van Dijk, while Barcelona, Juventus and Tottenham are among the clubs said to be chasing Cedric.

But Les Reed, Southampton's executive director, insists his club have no plans to sell and hopes to have a quiet transfer window."None of those players are for sale," Reed said to Sky Sports. "I can't make it any plainer than that and that's the way we mean to go forward.

"We built this squad over some time and think we have a strong squad. We will fine-tune it but, other than that, we are looking forward to a very competitive season next year and we plan to go forward on that basis.

"It's not broken so there is no need to bring in players just because of fashion or to get people excited in the transfer market."Former Alaves boss Pellegrino signed a three-year contract to replace the sacked Claude Puel last week.

"We track players over years and when the new manager comes in like Mauricio, we take him through that process," said Reed."He'd done his homework on our squad and we don't believe we need to turn over players every year just to freshen things up.

"There may be players that go on the basis it is the right thing for them and the club at that given time, but we don't expect that to be wholesale and this is simply doing sound business in the transfer window."We've got a strong squad now and it would be about adding players bringing more value and power."

Reports linking Van Dijk to Liverpool continue despite the Reds stating they have dropped their interest in him earlier this month, having apologised to Southampton for "any misunderstanding" surrounding their pursuit, following an alleged illegal approach.

Marcus Rashford may have felt he was in the presence of royalty when he met Ronaldinho, but he certainly made an impression on the Brazil icon.

The 19-year-old attacker sat down with the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star in a restaurant and managed to get a picture with him.Rashford posted the image on Instagram with the caption, "Nice to sit down and chat with the king."

While the Manchester United player was happy to meet one of the greatest of all time, Ronaldinho felt a mutual admiration for him and shared the same picture."He has quality as a footballer, besides being a good and humble person," the 37-year-old wrote.Ronaldinho has been out of the game since leaving Fluminense in 2015.

Still in the early years of his career, Rashford is expected to be a big part of Jose Mourinho's team next season, having made 53 appearances in all competitions last term.

Monaco reject €35m Arsenal bid for Lemar

    1c72kgt8fqkqn1aa1d6h5ule7m.jpg

Arsenal have seen a bid of €35 million (£30.7m) for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar rejected by the Ligue 1 champions, Goal understands.

The Gunners had been hopeful of making the France international their second signing of the summer, with Goal reporting their interest on Tuesday. But Monaco - who have already sold Bernardo Silva to Manchester City - do not want too many of their star players to leave this summer.

Tiemoue Bakayoko is on the verge of completing a move to Chelsea while City are confident they can sign full-back Benjamin Mendy.

Fellow defender Djibril Sidibe is also expected to depart, and with the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho also linked with exits, the principality side are playing hard ball over Lemar.
They are willing to offer the 21-year-old a new deal to remain at the Stade Louis II while the player himself is open to the idea of staying for one more season before moving on.

Lemar impressed last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists, as Monaco beat Paris Saint-Germain to the Ligue 1 title as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.Despite the setback, Arsene Wenger is unlikely to give up on signing Lemar, with a fresh bid set to be launched.

It is not the first time Arsenal have been left disappointed in the market this summer, with Lyon rejecting the Gunners's opening bid of £44m for Alexandre Lacazette as they hold out for a fee closer to £57m.

The Emirates Stadium outfit have also not given up on signing Mbappe, with a move for Lemar potentially paving the way for the 18-year-old to follow him to north London.

Their only success has come in the shape of Bosnia-Herzegovina international full-back Sead Kolasinac, who has signed on a free transfer from Schalke.

Portugal 0 Chile 0 (aet, 0-3 pens): Bravo the hero in shoot-out victory

    bravo-cropped_vntw4muwgtd5133rwfts5ef5s.jpg

Claudio Bravo was the hero for Chile as he saved all three Portugal penalties to send his side into the Confederations Cup final in a 3-0 shoot-out victory in Kazan.Chile had been denied a clear penalty in the second period of extra-time and hit the woodwork twice in quick succession soon after, but they wrapped up the win in convincing fashion from the spot.

Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez were all on target for the Copa America champions, while Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani were all denied by Manchester City stopper Bravo.Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo did not step up to take a spot-kick.The match itself finished goalless after a largely drab 90 minutes, before springing into life late in extra-time.

The video assistant referee was not called into action to review Jose Fonte's clear foul on Francisco Silva in the box, before Vidal and Martin Rodriguez hit the frame of the goal.On balance, it was a deserved victory for Chile, who also won both of their Copa America titles from the spot after the matches ended goalless.

A scything early throughball from Sanchez to Eduardo Vargas came to nothing when Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio dived at the forward’s feet, before Bravo kept out Andre Silva at the other end as the match started at a promising pace.

Those early chances proved not to be a sign of things to come, however, and it was not until Aranguiz sent a header narrowly wide just short of the half-hour mark that either side came close to troubling the scoreline again.A wild slice on the half-volley from Aranguiz soon after saw another opportunity to break the deadlock come and go, though Chile were beginning to look most likely to go ahead.

The match was crying out for a goal but Andre Gomes offered a strong indication that he would not the man to deliver it by dragging an awful shot well wide of the target early in the second half.Vidal then jumped too early to meet a well-weighted hanging cross, sending the ball high and wide, but Vargas did draw a save from Patricio when he shaped himself brilliantly to unleash a powerful overhead kick.

Ronaldo, who had been quiet since setting up Silva's early chance, fired an effort straight at Bravo as the game started to open up, before lifting a free-kick harmlessly over from a promising position having stood ominously over the ball in trademark fashion.

The skipper then saw a shot deflected wide and miscued a header – the match careering inevitably towards the additional periods. The first chance of extra-time fell to Sanchez, but the Arsenal man's header curled agonisingly wide having initially looked destined for the bottom corner.

Chile's penalty that never was came seven minutes into the second period, yet VAR was not consulted. Replays clearly showed the Portugal defender making contact with Silva's foot. Then came Chile's woodwork frustration - a fierce Vidal strike bounced back off the right-hand post, only for Rodriguez's improvised effort on the rebound to hit the crossbar.

When the shoot-out came around, Portugal produced three poor penalties - the efforts from Quaresma and Moutinho were almost identical and Nani stuttered to a strike that failed to fool Bravo, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Chile squad.

Chile face Mexico or Germany in Sunday's final.

'Claudio was amazing' - Pizzi says Chile triumph down to Bravo penalty prep

    claudio-bravo-chile_133aeqh95dssa11l4afyj0n2zb.jpg

Coach Juan Antonio Pizzi says Chile have Claudio Bravo's meticulous penalty preparations to thank for their shoot-out victory over Portugal on Wednesday.
Bravo saved all three Portugal spot-kicks to send Chile into the final after the match had ended goalless after 120 minutes.

Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez were all on target to fire Chile to a 3-0 shoot-out win, but Bravo was singled out for special praise by Pizzi."Fortunately, Claudio was amazing in the penalty shootout, the players who scored were amazing and I think we deserve to be in the final," he told a news conference.

"Nobody wants to be in that situation. You never know what is going to happen. But when Claudio was able to stop the first effort and Arturo scored, we calmed down a little."Claudio had analysed his opponents very well, he was very well prepared and that's why we were able to win.

"We needed to consider that penalties might be a possibility. I've had to take penalties as a player and it's not the same in training as in a real semi-final or a final. There are different theories. "I think anything goes but normally we try to do what has brought us success in previous competitions. We were successful with our style in the Copa America [in which Chile have won two finals on penalties] and we did the same.

"I'm very proud of this team and the players are very proud to represent Chile in every single tournament. We are very humbled by the big responsibility we carry.
"I hope we'll be able to keep working the way we are and keep having so much success in Chilean football."

Chile were denied a clear penalty in the second period of extra-time and hit the woodwork twice in quick succession through Vidal and Martin Rodriguez soon after.

"I think we could have scored in the 120 minutes but we had to wait for the shootout, and then we did it well," added Pizzi."The shoot-out needs players ready to do a good job. It's a very tense situation."Our goalkeeper had the virtue of seeing what the player was going to do. So it's true that there was luck but I wouldn't say it was only luck."

Chile penalty hero Bravo: I was injured!

    bravo-cropped_1frfdy7jne9491tlmz3to6a73s.jpg

Chile penalty hero Claudio Bravo says he was unable to play at his normal level during the Confederations Cup semi-final against Portugal due to injury.

Bravo saved all three Portugal penalties to send Chile into the final after the match ended 0-0, with Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez all on target from the spot for the South Americans.

But despite keeping out poor spot-kicks from Ricardo Quaresma, Joao Moutinho and Nani, Manchester City goalkeeper Bravo - who arrived in Russia with a calf problem and only came into the first team for their last group game against Australia - was understated in his assessment of the match."I feel as I always do. I'm a very balanced person," he said. "I was injured and didn't play at my normal pace.

"But I normally take things calmly and this was a very special game for us. We were able to reach the final which is very important for us, we're completing a very successful cycle. We're happy to play in the final.

"I don't think it's only chance. I think you need to work a lot, you need to study your opponent. I think we played with our heads. We were quite tired at the end but playing with our heads as well as our hearts.

"I knew what I had to do. Of course we're very happy because we've been able to stop the European champions."Portugal had many chances to score. I think the game was quite balanced. Both teams showed great respect for the other.

"The secret, I think, is that we never stop believing in ourselves and we want to do everything we can to win. We still have one more game to win."

Politician brands Raiola a 'people trafficker' & slams Donnarumma

    gianluigi-donnarumma_crwarkvalvbc1bfbm5w2emkbl.jpg

Italian politician Matteo Salvini is not at all pleased with how Gianluigi Donnarumma and his agent Mino Raiola are dealing with the goalkeeper's situation with A.C. Milan.

The 18-year-old has been on-again, off-again in terms of signing a new deal with the Serie A club, with the youngster the subject of constant rumours linking him with a move away from the side to the likes of Juventus. And Salvini, the leader of Lega Nord and a Milan fan, says he no longer believes he even wants the goalkeeper around, and says his agent is simply a "human trafficker".

“I am honestly struggling to say I hope he remains at Milan,” Salvini told Radio 1.“He’s a valid player, but someone who is always hesitating, I might stay or go, I might sign or not, I don’t know if I’d like to still have him in the Milan jersey.

“Consistency is the most important thing for me and that comes first. If he doesn’t want to stay, then I wouldn’t keep him. Who is forcing him to remain?“He was silent for a week, in the hands of that improbable agent who traffics people for millions of Euros. If you say no to me once, as far as I am concerned, it’s over.

“It’s the same in politics – if you fool me once, you won’t fool me again.”The comments come just a day after Italian Football Federation president Carlo Tavecchio called the fees for agents "offensive", with Raiola already revealed to be due around £41 million from Paul Pogba’s record-breaking transfer to United in 2016.

Ronaldo confirms skipping third-place match after birth of two sons

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed he had become the father of two boys during the Confederations Cup.Portugal were eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday, suffering a 3-0 penalty shoot-out loss to Chile after a 0-0 draw in Russia.

Ronaldo was left disappointed by his side's exit, confirming the birth of his two boys and that he would miss the third place play-off on Sunday.

"I was in the service of the national team, as always, body and soul, even though my two sons were born," he wrote on Facebook."Unfortunately, we have not been able to achieve the main sporting objective that we wanted, but I am sure we will continue to give joy to the Portuguese.

"The president of the Portuguese Football Federation and the national team have today had an attitude that has touched me and I will not forget."I'm very happy to finally be with my children for the first time."Ronaldo's first son, Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., turned seven earlier this month.

‘I won’t break my silence’ - Cristiano Ronaldo defiant amid transfer talk

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid_16ihojrjqgq61x57pzo5b6mhs.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo is refusing to break his silence amid speculation the Portuguese star is looking to leave Real Madrid this summer.

The 32-year-old Blancos star has been linked with moves to former club Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain following reports he is angry at the scrutiny of his tax affairs in Spain.

Ronaldo was accused of defrauding Spanish tax authorities out of €14.7million, claims which the player has denied.Questioned after Portugal's Confederations Cup semi-final loss to Chile on Wednesday, Ronaldo refused to be drawn on the situation."I will not speak and I will not break my silence," Ronaldo is quoted by AS.

Ronaldo scored 25 La Liga goals last season and registered six assists as Zinedine Zidane led the capital side to the Spanish title. The Portuguese also struck 12 times in the Champions League as Real became the first club in the competition to claim back-to-back trophies.

Ronaldo's happiness was not in question prior to the tax fraud accusations, with the former United winger signing a five-year extension on his Real contract in November 2016.

As such, Real president Florentino Perez believes his prized asset will stay put, but concedes Ronaldo is angry with the situation he finds himself in."Cristiano has a contract with Madrid," he told esRadio on Tuesday. "What we know is that he told a colleague that he is angry and it was published in A Bola. I haven't spoken with him.

"I do not give it the importance that is given [in the media]. The only thing that has to be done is to wait and talk after the Confederations Cup."He is angry. He is a man of integrity and has fulfilled with his duties. There are many people who have wanted to hurt him with taxes and other topics and he feels it.

"We are delighted that he is in Madrid. If you believe that you will continue on this radio [show] I believe that Cristiano will also stay. I have spoken with [Ronaldo's agent Jorge] Mendes about him."

If Ronaldo, who has confirmed he had become the father of two boys during the Confederations Cup, were to leave Real, Manchester looks the likliest destination.

Jose Mourinho is in the market for a forward to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic ahead of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign, with United chiefs said to be willing to fork out a substantial fee.Real, however, insist the Portugal star's signature will cost up to £350 million.

Should Real be serious about signing Monaco striker Kylian Mbappe, however, they may be open to selling Ronaldo or Gareth Bale to generate the funds for the Frenchman.Mbappe scored 15 goals and claimed eight assists in the French top flight last season.

    Defoe completes Bournemouth move

    hd-jermain-defoe-sunderland_1ak1mhznozsh61t3tnvc1kstkd.jpg

Jermain Defoe has completed his move to Bournemouth after signing a three-year deal at the Vitality Stadium.

The England international joins the Cherries having been released by Sunderland following their relegation from the Premier League.Defoe's signing marks his return to the club where he first made headlines during a loan spell from West Ham in 2000-01.

“It’s great to be back and I’m really looking forward to this challenge,” said Defoe.
“When the opportunity came about to return to AFC Bournemouth I just knew it was the right one.

“It was an easy decision, joining a top team with a top manager. It’s a great place to be.“The Bournemouth fans know that every time I pull the shirt on I will give 100 per cent, and the one thing I can guarantee is goals.”

The striker scored 18 goals in 29 appearances during his previous spell for the club, including a record-breaking run of 12 goals in 10 matches during the second half of the campaign.

Defoe leaves Sunderland having scored 37 goals in two-and-a-half seasons for the Black Cats - form which has seen him earn a recall to the England national side.

He becomes Bournemouth's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Asmir Begovic from Chelsea while Nathan Ake is closing in on £20m move to the south coast.

'Man Utd can win Premier League if draws become wins'

Jose Mourinho will win the Premier League title with Manchester United if the Red Devils convert 90 per cent of their home draws into victories next season, says Phil Neville.

United registered just eight league wins at Old Trafford en route to a sixth-place finish last term, with Mourinho's men frustrated by a return of 10 draws.

Mourinho did lift the EFL Cup and Europa League trophies, though, and Neville – who came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford before leaving for Everton in 2005 – is convinced the Portuguese will lead the club to greater honours.

"If you look at the drawn games at Old Trafford last season and convert maybe 90 per cent of those into wins, then United would have been challenging for the title," he told MUTV."If they can do that this year, then I think the title will come back to Manchester.

"United are heading in the right direction and the confidence the manager and his squad got from winning the EFL Cup and Europa League can be taken into the Champions League and the league next year. "Neville, who made over 350 appearances for United, also believes it is crucial United make shrewd signings during the transfer window.

"It’s going to be a difficult season, as everyone else is spending money and improving," Neville added."United are going to have to improve as well because they didn’t finish in the top four last season.

"Now, every time I pick up a paper, another player is linked with United but I'm sure Jose will bring success, like he did last season, and ultimately, hopefully, bring the title back to Manchester."

Juventus confirm Dani Alves exit as Man City move looms

Juventus have released Dani Alves, freeing the Brazilian full-back to complete his anticipated switch to Manchester City.

The 34-year-old moved to Turin in similar circumstances 12 months ago, cutting ties with Barcelona after eight glittering seasons at Camp Nou.

Alves won Serie A and the Coppa Italia in a year at Juventus Stadium, but he could not add the Champions League crown as Juve were thrashed 4-1 by a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Real Madrid in Cardiff.

Alves is expected to face competition at right-back from another new signing, with Tottenham's Kyle Walker reportedly top of Pep Guardiola's wishlist, while Benjamin Mendy of Monaco is expected to be drafted in at left-back.Full-backs Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna were all released in an end-of-season clear out at the Etihad Stadium.

City have already splashed out for Monaco playmaker Bernardo Silva and Benfica goalkeeper Ederson as Guardiola plots a response to his first trophyless campaign as a manager.

Germany 4 Mexico 1: Low's rampant rookies book Chile final showdown

    leon-goretzka-cropped_f8rowkhgvmcq1bp1yfzkbggb1.jpg

Joachim Low's exciting young Germany team overcame Mexico 4-1 on Thursday to set up a re-match with Chile in the Confederations Cup final.

An early two-minute brace from Bayern Munich target Leon Goretzka saw Germany take control of the semi-final in Sochi, where Mexico refused to give up but struggled to cope with the energy and quality of a side derided by many before the tournament as disrespectfully inexperienced.

Rather than find themselves out of their depth in Russia, Low's raw squad have instead served to make a statement of the ominous depth of talent beyond the first-choice ranks of the world champions, typified by striker Timo Werner, who struck his team's third goal shortly before the hour mark. Marco Fabian's blistering late free-kick mattered little for Mexico, a fact hammered home when Amin Younes restored Germany's three-goal cushion in added time. Germany will now tackle Chile for the second time in the tournament in the decider in St Petersburg on Sunday.

The battle-hardened Copa America holders, penalty shoot-out winners over Portugal a day earlier, have been the only team to trouble Die Mannschaft's tyros in a 1-1 group stage draw earlier this month.

A high-tempo start at Fisht Stadium saw Mexico, perhaps inadvisably, try to take the game to Germany, succeeding only in leaving themselves wide open at the back. Hector Moreno was caught out of position as Bayer Leverkusen's Benjamin Henrichs advanced down the right before passing inside to Goretzka. The Schalke midfielder guided a well-judged first-time shot just inside the post, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Rather than heed that painful lesson, Mexico were cut apart again two minutes later, when Werner made space for himself in front of the opposition's back four before sliding a pass in behind for Goretzka to run on to. The 22-year-old kept his cool to fire the ball across Ochoa and into the far side-netting. It could easily have been 3-0 in the 19th minute, when Ochoa made a good save with his knees after Werner beat the offside trap.

Mexico slowly steadied and grew into the game, calling Marc-Andre ter Stegen into action three times in quick succession soon after the half-hour mark. Brothers Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos had a shot and a header respectively on target following a clever forward pass and subsequent lay-off that sliced open Germany's young rear guard, while Javier Hernandez poked narrowly over the bar under pressure from the on-rushing Barcelona shot-stopper. The Bayer Leverkusen striker then forced Ter Stegen to tip a dipping long-range free-kick over the bar in a strong finish to the half for Juan Carlos Osorio's men.

Mexico threatened first in the second half through Raul Jimenez, but Germany duly asserted themselves, Werner again getting in behind a stretched defence to slide a finish agonisingly across the face of the goal under pressure from Moreno.

The RB Leipzig striker eventually got the goal his efforts deserved, as Germany put the result beyond doubt in the 59th minute. Julian Draxler was the architect this time, playing Jonas Hector into the box, where the Cologne defender squared to provide an easy finish for Werner, who could perhaps have been flagged offside for his position in the build-up to the goal.

Miguel Layun's fierce drive in the 72nd minute needed Ter Stegen to parry the ball behind, while Jimenez crashed a header against the bar as Mexico strove for a consolation goal.It eventually arrived in spectacular fashion, impressive substitute Fabian unleashing an extraordinary long-range free-kick to breach Germany's determined resistance.

Low's men could not help having the final say, though, Emre Can teeing up fellow sub Younes for his team's fourth goal in a chaotic period of injury time.

Arsenal seeking 'top quality additions' vows Gazidis amid Lemar and Lacazette links

    391012_heroa.jpg

Ivan Gazidis says Arsenal are in the market for “top quality additions” and has defended the decision to hand Arsene Wenger a new contract.

The Gunners have been accused in the past of failing to flex their financial muscle when presented with an opportunity to bolster the ranks.Big-money deals have been sanctioned at times, but there has been no influx of high-profile additions.

That could be about to change, with Gazidis suggesting that Sead Kolasinac is merely the first exciting addition to be drafted in to Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal chief executive told a fan Q&A event on Thursday: “We signed one of the players in the Bundesliga team of the season [Kolasinac].“We’re looking for top quality additions.”

Gazidis went on to admit that discussions are being held regarding a number of possible deals, with Arsenal being linked with the likes of Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette and Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar.

He also addressed the contentious issue of Wenger’s future. The long-serving French coach faced protests against his reign in 2016-17, but was handed a new two-year deal after guiding the club to another FA Cup triumph.Gazidis believes that decision was justified, with the best interests of Arsenal taken into account.

He said: “It wasn’t a sentimental decision. It was a mutual one.”Owner Stan Kroenke was also praised, despite criticism from certain sections of supporters, with that show of support drawing heckles from the assembled crowd.
Gazidis also admitted that the club are looking to add to their backroom staff this summer.
