Netherlands 2 Sweden 0: Robben-inspired win not enough to prevent World Cup failure

    45346B2500000578-4967566-image-a-117_1507667189534.jpg

Netherlands have failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 2002 after an Arjen Robben-inspired 2-0 win over Sweden left them trailing the visitors on goal difference in Group A.

Dick Advocaat's men went into the match knowing they needed to score at least seven goals and win by six to secure a top-two spot, and although Robben's fine performance saw them claim a comfortable win, they were far too profligate to get near their target.

Netherlands certainly could not be accused of starting the game with a lack of intent, as Robben opened the scoring with a confident penalty, before several other chances fell their way.

They were mostly wasteful, but Robben – by far the best player on the pitch – showed his class with a stunning second just before the break to at least provide a little extra belief.

Sweden's reluctance to offer anything in the attacking third only increased after the interval and subsequently impacted the home side's chance creation, as the visitors became tighter at the back.

As such, Netherlands struggled to create clear-cut chances and things petered out, allowing Sweden to celebrate securing a play-off spot behind France, who beat Belarus 2-1 in Paris. After an elaborate welcome to the pitch involving smoke machines, a stadium blackout and a light show, Netherlands made a strong start to proceedings.

Robben was particularly lively and – after missing a couple of early chances – broke the deadlock 16 minutes in, coolly converting a penalty after Victor Lindelof calamitously kicked the ball on to his own hand.

Robben was at the centre of things again 10 minutes later, with his shot from distance deflecting into the path of Georginio Wijnaldum, who inexplicably failed to find the next from 10 yards.Kenny Tete was the next to waste a glorious chance, blasting well over from close range following Nathan Ake's sublime cross just after the half-hour mark.

But they did get a second in the 40th minute – Robben received Ryan Babel's cut-back and sent a sensational first-time effort into the far side of the goal from 25 yards.

Netherlands continued to pile the pressure on after the break and, with the physical Bas Dost replacing Vincent Janssen at half-time, they had more of a target man to aim for.Despite their dominance, the hosts struggled to craft chances before Dost proved effective in his role just before the hour mark, nodding on a lofted pass to Wijnaldum, who shot straight at Olsen from 16 yards.

A rare chance fell to Sweden with 20 minutes to go, but Emil Forsberg shot just over from 25 yards after Daley Blind had gifted possession to Marcus Berg. After something of a lull, Robben again went close three minutes from time, but Olsen was equal to his effort at the near post and Sweden ultimately did enough to ensure their place in the play-offs.

'I think you don't appreciate him' - Bilic believes Hart deserves better

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic backed Joe Hart, saying the goalkeeper was unfairly criticised and had become an easy target.Hart, 30, has been questioned for his performances for England and at club level, particularly since leaving Manchester City for a loan spell at Torino last season.

The shot-stopper produced a fine display in World Cup qualifying earlier this month, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Slovenia that secured England's place in Russia.

Bilic defended his goalkeeper and believes Hart deserves more credit than he is often given."I think you don't appreciate him. I watched the game against Slovenia. He was man of the match," the Croatian said.

"But you didn't have that feeling from the studio, from the commentator, saying it was a penalty [to Slovenia] – it wasn't a penalty. If it was anyone else goalkeeping in that situation, nobody would say it was a penalty. I have that feeling at this moment.

"Has he become an easy target? Yes. The guy is brilliant. I'm not just talking about goalkeeping now. The guy never slaughters anyone in the job."He is taking the bullets, he is there every single time, whether he is at City or Torino or West Ham. He is a great professional and a top pro."Bilic's West Ham, who are 15th in the Premier League, visit Burnley on Saturday.

Alexis is like Messi, Beckham and Zidane for Chile – Wenger

Chile star Alexis Sanchez is similar to Lionel Messi, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham with his national team, according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.Sanchez's Chile stunningly missed out on qualifying for the 2018 World Cup after a 3-0 loss to Brazil on a dramatic final day in CONMEBOL on Tuesday.

Wenger, whose side return to Premier League action with a trip to Watford on Saturday, said Sanchez was among a group of players heavily relied upon by his nation – similar to Zidane with France, Beckham with England and Messi with Argentina.

"I would say you have in every generation a player who carries the pressure of expectation of a nation," the Frenchman said.

"In France it was Zidane. In England it was Beckham. We had other players in the team but it was Beckham. Why not [Steven] Gerrard? I don't know. But it was Beckham.

"In Chile it's Sanchez. In Argentina of course it's Messi. It looks like that there is somebody there in a national team who has to carry the pressure and absorb it and protect a little the rest of the team.

"It's someone normally who likes it a little bit. They like to be on the front line. Overall what does it mean? It means they have to deal with the lows as well."

Sanchez, 28, has been the subject of intense speculation for months, with the star forward in the final year of his Arsenal contract.Wenger said he was uncertain if Sanchez would be ready to face Watford, questioning his mental state.

"He is as well in a very difficult mind. Chile just won the Copa America twice and now they don't even go to the World Cup," he said."Sanchez is 29 at the end of the year, so the next one he will be 33. He expected to go. Certainly [it's] a big disappointment for him.

"But I believe to play at the top level as well, it is part of dealing with that kind of disappointment."

'Fair chance' of Liverpool and Arsenal target Lemar leaving Monaco in 2018, Vasilyev concedes

Thomas Lemar stands a "fair chance" of leaving Monaco next year after moves to Liverpool and Arsenal fell through before the transfer deadline, according to club vice-president Vadim Vasilyev.

The France winger was long linked with a departure from the Ligue 1 club after playing a starring role in their title success and impressive journey to the Champions League semi-finals.

Moves to Liverpool and Arsenal were strongly mooted, as the two clubs looked to line up replacements for their respective wantaway stars Philippe Coutinho and Alexis Sanchez.

Those two ultimately remained in the Premier League, while Arsene Wenger claimed that Lemar rejected a move to London in favour of remaining in the principality, where he would have Champions League football to look forward to.

But Vasilyev – who revealed Arsenal were the closest to signing Lemar – was refreshingly honest when revealing the 21-year-old will likely be allowed to leave at the end of the season.

"Liverpool were really interested," Vasilyev told Sky Sports."But it was Arsenal that was really close to finalising the deal. It was quite close. At the same time it was just too late, not enough time to really follow up on this deal.

"Not all the elements of the puzzle fell in place. I'm very happy he stayed with us.For us, we need a player like Thomas Lemar. He's very important to our team."Definitely next summer [it] will be something to look at, although you know in football there are no guarantees.

"We had some players who were supposed to leave this summer but didn't leave because of X, Y, Z. I think it would be fair to say Thomas will have a fair chance to an exit next year."January? In football, never say never, but this is not what we're thinking of, this is really not in our plans.

"Then we have to wait and see how the team does in different competitions, if we have an interest in him and what his ambitions after the World Cup are. January doesn't seem like the right time for major changes in the team."

Vasilyev also accepted that Fabinho – another key player whom they managed to keep hold of for this season – may well be in his final season at Monaco."He's one of the key players in our squad, a very regular player," he added. "He's very important, we can always count on him.

"We are very happy that we managed to keep him. I think this is one player you want to keep forever."But we realise in Monaco that we have a certain model, that at a certain moment when we feel it's right we have to let players go in order to be successful again."This is not only about money; this is more about being successful."

‘We have to fight’ against Manchester United, says Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah says Liverpool have to fight for a result when they host Manchester United in Saturday's English Premier League showdown.

The 25-year-old returned to the Reds' Melwood training ground on Thursday morning after scoring twice to help Egypt secure their place in the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

And following Jurgen Klopp’s side stuttering start to the season, former Chelsea forward says it must be a collective effort from the whole team in order to turn results around and that starts against the Red Devils.

“It’s a big game on Saturday, everyone in the world will watch the game,” Salah told club website.“It’s a big game for us too because we have to keep fighting and improve our results, as I said. I hope we can get the win.

“But now we have to keep fighting and improve our results a little bit.“We always fight in each game, but this game is a big game and can make a difference for us. We have to improve our place in the table. We have to fight and try to win the game.”

Salah also spoke about the pride of helping Egypt qualify for their first World Cup in 17 years as well as the injury suffered by fellow African Sadio Mane during the international break.“It was a great, great feeling to help my country play in the World Cup after a long time,” he continued.“That’s something huge for us. I am very happy and very proud of it.

“I texted him[Mane] when he was at the national [team] and then when he came back. He told me then that he was injured, so that’s bad news for everyone.“But that’s football and anything can happen. Now we have to focus on the game and keep moving forward,” he concluded.

PSG president Al-Khelaifi investigated in World Cup bribery case

The Swiss attorney general's office (OAG) has opened criminal proceedings against Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and former FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke in connection to the awarding of World Cup media rights for 2026 and 2030.

The proceedings relate to an ongoing OAG investigation into Valcke that began in March 2016 and was opened on "suspicion of various acts of criminal mismanagement".Findings obtained in that process have led to a separate line of inquiry involving Al-Khelaifi, who is CEO of beIN Media Group.

The OAG stressed "no one has been on remand" and "the presumption of innocence applies".

"The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland has opened a criminal proceeding against the former Secretary General of FIFA and against the Chief Executive Officer of the BEIN MEDIA GROUP LLC [Al-Khelaifi] in connection with the award of World Cup media rights," an official statement read.

"It is suspected that Jerome Valcke accepted undue advantages from a businessman in the sports rights sector in connection with the award of media rights for certain countries at the FIFA World Cups in 2018, 2022, 2026 and 2030 and from Nasser Al-Khelaifi in connection with the award of media rights for certain countries at the FIFA World Cups in 2026 and 2030."Addresses in France, Greece, Italy and Spain have been raided in relation to the investigation.

Valcke - who was interviewed on Thursday - is currently in the process of appealing against his 10-year ban from football at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The Frenchman was found guilty of a series of breaches of FIFA's code of ethics and was sacked in January 2016, though he has always denied any wrongdoing.

France can win the World Cup with this team – Digne

France international Lucas Digne believes that Les Bleus have as good a shot as anyone of winning the World Cup next summer.Didier Deschamps’ men booked their passage to Russia in 2018 with victories over Belarus and Bulgaria, with the Barcelona full-back playing an integral role in both those fixtures.

Although France only managed to beat their opponents narrowly, they finished four points clear of Sweden and Netherlands atop UEFA Qualifying Group A and are considered one of the likeliest sides to win the competition.

While Digne believes his side are capable of claiming the prize, he would not necessarily put France down as the runaway favourites. “We can win the World Cup with this team,” Digne told Goal. “Of course, we have to think like that.

“We have great ambitions and a huge potential in this squad, but there are other teams who can win it as well, so I don’t see ourselves as favourites.

“Of course we can improve as a team and hit our top level in Russia, but now we have qualified directly and that is a great feeling for us all – and for the whole country.“We can allow ourselves to dream right now, but the most important thing is to work hard.”

Digne, 24, was a member of a defence in those two fixtures that comprised his team-mates from the Under-20 World Cup-winning squad, Samuel Umtiti and Raphael Varane, as well as Djibril Sidibe, who was the elder figure at just 25.

The young rearguard did not buckle under the pressure placed upon them, making it a week to remember for the former Lille and Paris Saint-Germain player.“Going into the last two games, we knew we could decide everything ourselves by winning both,” he said. “We’re very satisfied that we managed to do just that.

“Personally, I’m happy that I could play the full match in both of these important fixtures and thereby contribute to helping us to the World Cup. Celebrating on Tuesday with a full and party-ready Stade de France was a special experience.”

He did admit, however, that there remains untapped potential in the team.“We did the job but we can play better,” he added. “When we went 2-0 up, we looked great as a team but in the second half we struggled a bit to find our best and had to make it simple and work hard to get the result that we wanted.

“The only important thing was to win and qualify directly for the World Cup. We did that, so it was mission accomplished.”Now Digne has targeted a place at the finals, where he will have to battle fellow left-backs Benjamin Mendy and Layvin Kurzawa for a spot in the France panel. The Barca player has more experience than both, having gained 18 caps and been a part of the squad at two major finals as Patrice Evra’s understudy.

“Even though I’m only 24, I’ve already been at the World Cup in Brazil and last summer’s European Championship, so believe me, being part of a big tournament and representing your country on the biggest stage is fantastic for all footballers,” he concluded.

Muller: Ancelotti shouldn't be a scapegoat

Thomas Muller does not believe Carlo Ancelotti should be made a scapegoat after the Italian was sacked by Bayern Munich at the end of September.Bayern made the decision to relieve Ancelotti of his position last month following the team's 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

There had been rumours in the weeks leading up to his sacking that several key players in the dressing room were unhappy with his methods and had expressed that behind the scenes.Bayern sit five points behind pacesetters Borussia Dortmund after seven matches, but Muller does not believe all the blame should be laid at the feet of Ancelotti.

Speaking to reporters at an Audi event, Muller said: "A big part of this [their recent struggles] is caused by the team that stands on the pitch and does not perform like people expect it to."We must be realistic about this and not be of the opinion that Carlo Ancelotti was a scapegoat."

Jupp Heynckes was installed as Ancelotti's replacement until the end of the season, but Muller has urged fans not to expect an instant improvement."We should be very careful about setting targets which we can throw into the bin afterwards again," he said.

"We won't suddenly play football from another galaxy. There will of course be matches where people see us and be very critical."

Aguero accepts prospect of Man City signing Messi is 'complicated'

Sergio Aguero would "love" to have Lionel Messi join him at Manchester City, but accepts it would be complicated persuading a club "symbol" to leave Barcelona.

Speculation about the future of Messi has been rife for several months now after the Argentinian superstar — who scored a hat-trick to book his country's World Cup place on Wednesday — entered the final year of his contract at Camp Nou.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has claimed several times that Messi's renewal has already been actioned and just needs to be announced, but the clock keeps ticking and that confirmation is yet to be made.In spite of the delay, Aguero does not think that there is much hope of Messi joining him at City, even if money is not an issue for the Premier League side.

"The money isn't a problem here," Aguero told TyC Sport . "But I think Messi, like [Cristiano] Ronaldo, are players who are symbols of their clubs and it's difficult for them to leave."I would love to have Leo on my team, but that seems quite complicated."

Aguero is on the sidelines after breaking a rib in a car crash in Amsterdam at the end of September, an injury which kept him out of Argentina's final two World Cup qualifiers and was expected to prevent him from playing throughout the rest of October.

The 29-year-old, though, has appeared to indicate he could be in selection content for the match against Stoke City on Saturday, while he also hit back at those criticising him for going to Amsterdam on his days off."When a player has a free day at Manchester City, most of the players go to London, others to Italy, some to Spain," he said.

"I was lucky that I know the agent of Maluma [a Colombian singer], he invited me and I went. I had almost two days off and going to the airport was when I had that accident.

"Then one thinks "why did I [go]", but it's difficult to imagine that something like that could happen."I still do not know if I am going to play on Saturday. Today I trained normally, but without the group."Tomorrow I will get into the group to see how I feel, but at training it's not the same thing as a game, I want to see if I have pain."

Manchester United great Scholes interviewed for Oldham job

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Paul Scholes has been interviewed for the vacant manager's job at League One Oldham Athletic.

Oldham, who parted company with boss John Sheridan on September 25, declined to make an official comment on the matter, but Goal and Omnisport understand Scholes held talks on Wednesday.

Ex-Netherlands star Clarence Seedorf was interviewed last month, but is now out of the running. The Lactics have won three consecutive games in all competitions under caretaker manager Richie Wellens, who like Scholes is a product of the Old Trafford youth system.

Scholes, an 11-time Premier League champion, was previously offered the chance to become manager at his boyhood club when Lee Johnson left for Barnsley in 2015.

In a column for the Independent newspaper at the time, Scholes wrote: "One day I believe that I will manage Oldham, the club that my dad supports and who are very close to my heart."They are a really good family club who mean a great deal to a lot of people - myself included. I just did not feel this was the right time."

At the start of this year, Scholes took youth training sessions at Oldham as part of work towards his UEFA A coaching licence.Since calling time on a United career comprising 717 appearances and 155 goals, Scholes has worked as a television pundit and briefly coached at Old Trafford in the aftermath of David Moyes' ill-fated reign.

Along old United colleagues Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt, Scholes owns a stake in non-league side Salford City.

'We are ready to buy Coutinho' - Barcelona chief promises January move for Liverpool star

Barcelona are ready to make another move for Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho, club CEO Oscar Grau has confirmed, though his arrival will come at a cost.

The Camp Nou side were desperate to land the 25-year-old Brazil international in the summer window, with Coutinho himself attempting to force a deal through by telling the Reds he wanted to leave.

A transfer failed to materialise, however, with Liverpool instantly dismissing all offers from Barca before the end of the transfer deadline.

Barca director Albert Soler later revealed that Liverpool had requested €200 million for the diminutive playmaker, just short of what Neymar joined Paris Saint-Germain for weeks earlier.Rumours then emerged that the Premier League club would let him leave Anfield in the January window if Coutinho agreed to play out the rest of the calendar year for the club.

And the Liga leaders have not given up their chase for the attacker after confirming their intentions to make another move. They have, though, conceded there will have to be players sold to fund the deal.

"We are ready to buy Coutinho in the winter market, or any player the technical staff request," Grau said in a press conference. "But it is important to adjust ourselves, so if there are to be arrivals, there must be exits as well."We must forget about the price paid for Neymar last summer. After taxes we received about €188m in income and a direct financial impact on the club's treasury of €144m."

During the same Grau conference, the Barca boss revealed a record budget for the 2017-2018 campaign of €897m, as well as €708m in income for last season. Coutinho has gone onto make three appearances under Jurgen Klopp this season and scored twice.

Liverpool have won only three of their opening seven fixtures and sit seventh in the Premier League title, seven points behind early joint-leaders Manchester City and Manchester United, who they host at Anfield on Saturday.

Aubameyang: Borussia Dortmund told me I could leave

Borussia Dortmund were happy for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave the club during the most recent transfer window, the Gabon striker has confirmed
Aubameyang finished last season as the top scorer in the Bundesliga and was heavily linked with moves to AC Milan or the Chinese Super League, having also regularly spoken of a desire to join Real Madrid.Speaking in July, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc alluded to an unspecified period of time during which a transfer involving the 28-year-old could be sanctioned.

But Aubameyang remained in place for the current campaign under new boss Peter Bosz and has 13 goals in all competitions for the league leaders."There was a time in the window when I could have changed. We [Aubameyang and the Dortmund board] agreed on this together in all openness but nothing happened," he told Sport Bild .

"I have always felt very comfortable in Dortmund, in the team and at BVB, and that is true today, too. BVB is my family!"

Dortmund are five points clear of champions Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga after seven matches and host fourth-placed RB Leipzig on Saturday.
