Paris Saint-Germain 3 Nice 0: Cavani and Di Maria star in Neymar's absence

    45C0226500000578-5025359-image-a-27_1509135844430.jpg

Neymar's absence through suspension had no impact on Paris Saint-Germain as Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria led the Ligue 1 leaders to a comfortable 3-0 win over Nice at Parc des Princes on Friday.

Brazil star Neymar was banned after picking up a red card in last week's 2-2 Classique draw with Marseille, but at no point did they look lost without the world's most expensive player, as the Parisians cruised against a side lacking confidence.Unai Emery selected Di Maria as Neymar's replacement and it took him just three minutes to make a telling impact, setting up Cavani with a pinpoint free-kick.

The Argentine, who has reportedly become frustrated as a rotation option this season, was playing like a man with a point to prove and he set Cavani up for a second time just after the half-hour mark by producing a delightful pass over the Nice backline which the striker took full advantage of.Cavani then turned provider early in the second half, his header into the six-yard box leading to a Dante own goal that effectively put the match beyond Nice.

PSG saw the match out in a professional fashion to extend their lead over Monaco at the top of the table to seven points before Leonardo Jardim's side take on Bordeaux on Saturday.

Nice were dealt the blow of losing goalkeeper Yoan Cardinale in the warm-up and within three minutes of kick-off his replacement Walter Benitez was picking the ball out of the net.Wesley Sneijder failed to halt Di Maria's left-wing free kick as Nice's one-man wall and Cavani glanced PSG's 2,500th Ligue 1 goal in with a diving header at the near post.

Benitez somewhat redeemed himself when he denied Cavani after Julian Draxler robbed Maxime Le Marchand and teed the striker up 12 yards out, but PSG doubled their lead in the 31st minute.Di Maria played a clever pass in behind for Cavani to run on to, and the Uruguay star prodded past Benitez before helping the ball over the line from close range.

PSG should have put the match beyond the visitors just before the break, but Benitez threw himself across his goal to deny Di Maria what looked to be a certain goal from nine yards.

It went from bad to worse for Nice six minutes after the break as PSG got a third – Dante inadvertently bundling the ball past his own goalkeeper after Cavani headed Yuri Berchiche's deep cross back into the danger zone.

Nice were let off the hook when Kylian Mbappe failed to convert from six yards after Draxler brilliantly tricked his way past Marlon Santos and cut the ball back to the teenager.Mbappe nearly atoned for that miss after the hour mark, smashing into the side-netting after an immense driving run across the edge of the penalty area.

PSG failed to further punish a lacklustre Nice side with Benitez denying Lucas Moura - an 85th-minute replacement for Cavani - in stoppage time, but the gulf in class was already obvious, with the visitors left just one point above the bottom three.

Mourinho praises Herrera's character after Huddersfield admission

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said he was surprisingly impressed with Ander Herrera's comments following last week's shock loss at Huddersfield Town, insisting they showed "dignity" and "intelligence".Spanish midfielder Herrera was candid in his assessment of United's 2-1 Premier League defeat to newly-promoted Huddersfield, questioning the team's passion and mentality.

Those comments seemed to anger Mourinho in the aftermath of United's first loss of the season, sparking speculation of a falling out between the pair, which Herrera quickly denied.

Despite the reports, Mourinho praised Herrera's honesty ahead of Saturday's visit of Tottenham to Old Trafford."I was surprised but I was happy about his words because it is not easy for the players to recognise and admit [why they lost]," said Mourinho.

"I was happy because it shows dignity, character and intelligence to know the reason why we lost the match."So contrary to some imaginary sources that tell you everything we do here, I can promise you that since that match I didn't speak one single second about the match, because [there's] no need."

United are level on points with third-placed Tottenham but ahead on goal difference as they sit five points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Man City's Mendy wants to return for Champions League semi-finals

Benjamin Mendy said he will be reunited with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in the Champions League semi-finals as he continues to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

France international left-back Mendy ruptured the ACL in his right knee during City's 5-0 Premier League rout of Crystal Palace last month. The 23-year-old had only arrived from French champions Monaco in a deal in the region of £50 million in July.

Mendy, however, has set his sights on returning for the final four of the Champions League, which is scheduled to get underway in April."I told Pep after I got my results I would only have surgery if he promised me City would be in the Champions League semi-finals when I come back," Mendy told The Times ."That is our checkpoint. That is where we will meet again.

"I want to get back fit as soon as possible," Mendy added. "I want to play in the Premier League, the Carabao Cup, the Champions League, the FA Cup, and there's no doubt in my mind that I will play in the World Cup."You know what I'm like when I play with City, I always have a smile on my face and it's the same with my rehab."

Premier League leaders City – who are five points clear atop the summit – travel to West Brom on Saturday.

'I will be here' - Klopp confident he will be at Liverpool for years to come

Jurgen Klopp is confident he will remain Liverpool manager for years to come, despite growing scrutiny over his job at Anfield.Having arrived amid much fanfare in 2015, Klopp is under pressure after overseeing just two wins since August – a run capped by last week's 4-1 rout against Premier League rivals Tottenham.

Liverpool are ninth in the table and already 12 points adrift of leaders Manchester City as doubts grow over Klopp, but the German boss is staying defiant."I got so many messages saying, 'Don't listen to the pundits,'" Klopp said ahead of Saturday's clash with newly-promoted Huddersfield Town.

"People think maybe I'm not the right one anymore and stuff like this. Inside nobody thinks it. Not the owners and not me. Okay, we can try again like two years ago and get a new manager but the problems are always the same."I know I am 100 per cent responsible for all this. People think that one day you lost a half a brain or whatever. I don't think I am the problem."

When talking about talented youngsters Ben Woodburn and Rhian Brewster, Klopp added: "I will be here, 100 per cent – I'm convinced I'll be here when they come through."

:love:Ibrahimovic ready to share goalscoring load with Lukaku

Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes his Manchester United comeback is easier and less pressured thanks to the form of team-mate Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku has hit the ground running at United following his £75 million arrival from Everton, scoring 11 goals in 14 matches in all competitions – seven of those in the Premier League.

Ibrahimovic – back at Old Trafford after becoming a free agent temporarily following a serious knee injury suffered in April – scored 28 goals during his debut season in Manchester having shouldered much of the goalscoring burden as United won the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League.

The 36-year-old Swede, who is tipped to return to action in December, knows he faces a battle to win a place in Jose Mourinho's starting XI but the former Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Barcelona star is relishing the presence of Lukaku."I'm part of the team, I bring my qualities the day I come back and am able to play.I bring my spirit, my mental part, my experience, and my qualities," Ibrahimovic told Sky Sports.

"The team is stronger this season. Lukaku is in the team scoring a lot of goals, and he is making the job easier for me, because last year when we were playing we could not change that role.

"We had one scoring the goals, and doing that job, and there were no variations for the coach. This season it is easier. Lukaku is only positive, because he makes my 'comeback' less pressured, it gives me a lot of time, and I'm happy for that.

"The more time I get, the better it gets. He's scoring his goals and doing what he needs to do. When I come back, the coach is there, we will see how things go."I think I have a lot to bring. Now I have been off for six months, how much more it will be we don't know, but trust me when I come back I will be motivated. Very hungry."

United welcome high-flying Tottenham to Old Trafford on Saturday, with both teams level on 20 points and five adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Ozil: I give everything on the pitch for Arsenal

Mesut Ozil says he is giving his all for Arsenal despite being consistently mired in transfer speculation. Several outlets reported last week that the German had told team-mates he would be leaving the Gunners for Manchester United this winter.

With the 29-year-old in the final year of his current deal, Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke also came out to make it clear that the club would like to keep him around.

Ozil, for his part, was happy to get the backing and says he'll give his best for the Gunners, though was not ready to clarify anything about his future."It's very nice to hear that [Kroenke's comments] and to see that - he's the major shareholder," Ozil told Sky Sports."I'm happy here, and I do my job to 100 per cent as I always have. I give everything and leave it all on the pitch for the team.

"The most important thing is football. I want to give everything, 100 per cent for this club."It's important for me to give my all and enjoy playing as well. Whatever else happens, we will see in the future."

The former Real Madrid man turned in a star showing against Everton in a 5-2 win on Sunday, and is now focusing on consistently showing his quality despite being used on the wing rather than in his preferred No. 10 role. "I know myself better than anyone else and I'm someone who needs to have fun on the pitch," Ozil added.

"Everyone knows my favourite position is the playmaker, the No 10, at the moment the coach plays me on the right and it's a thing I need to accept and to show my quality in that position.

"Of course I'm happy to perform and give good performances individually, but it's more important that we do that as a team. I think we did that really well against Everton."We came back very strongly, especially as we were 1-0 down. To come back as strongly as we did is pleasing.

"We have lots of quality in this team as we have shown. It's important to be consistent if we want to be successful."We know we have the quality, we just have to give our all and believe in ourselves. If we can do that I'm convinced we can win trophies."

Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League, level on 16 points with fourth place Chelsea, and face a home match against Swansea City on Saturday.

Lovren critics like rubberneckers, fumes Klopp

Jurgen Klopp blasted critics of Dejan Lovren as being like rubberneckers as the Liverpool defender's form and fitness continue to attract derision.Reds boss Klopp substituted Lovren after half an hour in last weekend's 4-1 loss at Tottenham after a string of errors from the 28-year-old.

The German boss was critical of the former Southampton man after the game at Wembley but adopted a different tact ahead of this weekend's visit of former colleague David Wagner's Huddersfield Town.

"I don't wish on one of you that all your mistakes are discussed in public," he said. "You cannot even imagine, you have not even an idea about how it feels. The boys, in the first case, are still human beings."It's kind of like watching an accident and there are people standing around with smartphones instead of helping – I am not this kind of person.

"We had a normal week and, of course, it was not the nicest week in Dejan's life, but at the end, it's only football. We have to know about this and people don't become a better or worse person after making a mistake in a football game.

"If I think about Dejan, I have much more positive things that I can think about than negative things, still."He is a player of Liverpool and that's how I treat him, as a member of this family, and it is clear that I will help him if I think I have to help him."

Lovren removed reference to his employers on his Instagram profile in the week after Liverpool's thrashing at the hands of Spurs, which left them mired in mid-table mediocrity.

But Klopp put little stock in that apparent act of rebellion, suggesting Lovren could be involved at Anfield on Saturday. He said: "It's up to you what you make of stories like this – if you celebrate yourself and are happy with having stories like this or if you cool down because the world of social media is difficult enough to handle. That's why I am not on it, I have no idea why people are doing it to be honest.

"Everything is okay, Dejan had a good training week, we will see what we will do for the game. It's not about the last game in general, it's about the next one. For Huddersfield, we will go for what we think will be the best line-up."

'Don't ask me about Kane!' - Mourinho shoots down questions on Spurs star

Jose Mourinho headed off questions about Harry Kane's absence from Saturday's Premier League showdown between Manchester United and Tottenham.

England striker Kane has fired Spurs to joint-second in the league with United, who will welcome Mauricio Pochettino's men to Old Trafford looking to re-establish a cushion after last week's defeat at Huddersfield Town.

A hamstring injury will prevent the league's top scorer from playing, but Mourinho refused to divulge any tactical switches he could make, or his thoughts about taking on a clearly weakened opponent.Mourinho began his news conference: "Because I know the question I don't need the question, I'll answer.

"I don't speak about injured players so don't ask me about Harry Kane, because to speak about Harry Kane I have to speak about [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, about [Paul] Pogba, about [Marcos] Rojo, about [Michael] Carrick, so I don't speak. Next question."

One player who will be available for Mourinho on Saturday is Nemanja Matic.
United parted with £40 million to sign the Chelsea midfielder, but Tottenham's Eric Dier had also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

Pochettino accuses Mourinho of trying to unsettle the England international in his new book, but the United manager stated that Matic was always his number-one target.

"I have the player that I want to have," Mourinho said."Probably I have the player that I didn't think it was possible to have, but in the end we got the player that I really wanted."

'Mourinho one of the best managers in the world' - Pochettino denies bad blood with Man Utd boss

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino insists there is no rift between himself and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho ahead of their weekend showdown.

United and Spurs are level on 20 points in the Premier League and sit as the closest challengers to leaders Manchester City on the eve of a keenly anticipated Old Trafford clash.

An extract from Pochettino's new book, published this week, detailed how the Argentinian was unimpressed by Mourinho hugging and talking with Eric Dier after last season's match at Old Trafford that United won 1-0.

Dier had been linked with a possible move to United and confirmed interest from the 20-time English champions in a lengthy discussion with Pochettino after the incident.

Pochettino accused Mourinho of putting Dier "in a compromising position" but, speaking at a news conference ahead of Saturday's game, he insisted the affair had long since been put to bed.

"That is a thing that is in the past," said the Spurs boss, who will be without top scorer Harry Kane against United due to a hamstring injury."I was honest. My relationship with him is very good, we are in contact. That was only one situation, a small one. It is not an issue.

"I don't like to speak about my book because it is in the past. The book only tried to show how difficult it is for every manager. Not only me. The intention is a book that can help a lot of people understand how our life is.

"You can read in my book how he is, for me, one of the best managers in the world – admired like [Pep] Guardiola. I am not perfect, I am human too."

Pochettino went on to confirm he stays in regular text contact with Mourinho and got in touch to offer condolences when the Portuguese's father passed away during the close season. The Spurs manager was keen to move attention away from the book and towards the weekend match, where he feels there should no longer be onus on his side to prove they belong alongside the heavyweights of English football.

"Every time over the last months when we are going to compete and play, [people say] that game will be... against Liverpool, Real Madrid and now in Manchester," he added.

"Always it is like we need to show the people that we deserve to be there. It is not like this."We are a team who want to compete, who are competing and then the results are the results.

"We have a clear idea about how we want to move and go – that is to win games and try to be on top in every competition."

England crowned Under-17 World Cup champions with victory over Spain

England have triumphed in the Under-17 World Cup after a stunning comeback to beat Spain 5-2 in the final in India. The Young Lions faced an uphill struggle after a Sergio Gomez double put Spain in the ascendancy early on in Saturday's showpiece.

But Rhian Brewster reduced the deficit just before half-time and, after the break, Morgan Gibbs-White and Manchester City youngster Phil Foden completed the comeback to put England in the lead.

Both Brewster and Gibbs-White's goals were laid on by Steven Sessegnon, the Fulham wonderkid whose performances in west London have seen him linked with some of the Premier League's biggest clubs.

Spain appeared to throw in the towel after letting slip a commanding lead, and their woe was compounded by further strikes from Marc Guehi and Foden to round off a comprehensive 5-2 victory.

The victory was sweet revenge for the Young Lions, who suffered defeat earlier this year in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship to Saturday's rivals.

Impressively, it was also achieved without teenage superstar Jadon Sancho, who was withdrawn from the World Cup in the group stage when Borussia Dortmund called him up to their first team.

Unbowed by Sancho's absence, Steve Cooper's charges won six out of seven games in the India-based tournament, scoring 23 goals and conceding just six.
It also marks the first time that England have won a World Cup at this age group, and completes a near-clean sweep of trophies at youth level.

As well as the U-17 trophy, England also triumphed at U-20 level in this year's World Cup, while the U-19s prevailed in the European Championship in a memorable summer for everyone involved.

Atletico Madrid 1 Villarreal 1: Simeone's side frustrated at home

Atletico Madrid had to settle for a fifth draw in six competitive matches as they were held 1-1 by Villarreal at the Wanda Metropoliatno on Saturday.Carlos Bacca crashed in an 81st minute header to cancel out Angel Correa's opener as Diego Simeone's endured another frustrating day.

Held to a 1-1 draw at third-tier Elche in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, the Rojiblancos were made to wait for the opener as Villarreal set about proving their pedigree as contenders for a Champions League spot.

Unsurprisingly it was a flash of brilliance from Antoine Griezmann that gave the home side the lead in the 61st minute as his exquisite vision and touch enabled Correa to tuck home at the near post. But, having spurned chances to go ahead in the first half, Villarreal continued to create opportunities and found late reward through Bacca.

The draw prevented fourth-placed Atleti from climbing above rivals Real Madrid and instead stretched Javi Calleja's unbeaten LaLiga start to life as Villarreal boss to four matches.

Bacca was first to try his luck during a subdued opening and should have done better in shooting straight at Jan Oblak.Atleti warmed to the contest as the half wore on, Correa drawing a sharp low save from Mariano Barbosa before Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Griezmann both failed to hit the target from the edge of the area.

Cedric Bakambu, scorer of six goals in his previous three league appearances, looked destined to continue his fine form when he was put through by Manu Trigueros, but the striker dallied over his finish and enabled Stefan Savic to produce a superb sliding challenge.

The visitors narrowly avoided paying an immediate price for the missed opportunity as goalkeeper Barbosa scampered to his far post to divert a goal-bound Griezmann volley, with Saul Niguez's tame follow-up cleared off the line by Victor Ruiz.

And it was Barbosa who again preserved the deadlock on the stroke of half-time, the 33-year-old athletically tipping Diego Godin's header over the bar.Spain Under-21 international Rodri issued a reminder of the danger at the other end by forcing Oblak to parry a low effort shortly after the restart.

Griezmann's genius eventually shone through for the home side, though, as his first-time flick out to the right found an unmarked Correa, who applied a fitting finish inside the near post.

Simeone's side came close to doubling their advantage soon after as the ball dropped kindly for Gameiro, only for an onrushing Barbosa to smother the chance at close-range.

The hosts' inability to extend their lead proved costly as Bacca rose high and headed in Samu Castillejo's corner to seal a hard-earned point for Calleja's side.
