Barcelona 2 Sevilla 1: Alcacer makes the most of rare start

    4603EDF800000578-0-image-a-1_1509830349826.jpg

Paco Alcacer made the most of a rare start as his double gave LaLiga leaders Barcelona a 2-1 home victory over Sevilla.

Alcacer, named in a league starting XI by Ernesto Valverde for the first time since the opening match of the season, scored once in each half as Barca restored their four-point lead at the top of the table after wins for title rivals Valencia and Atletico Madrid earlier on Saturday.

Guido Pizarro's headed equaliser in between Alcacer's two strikes briefly threatened a surprise result, but a draw would have flattered fifth-placed Sevilla, who have now lost four consecutive away games.

Barca have won 10 and drawn one of their first 11 league games and now sit 11 points clear of rivals Real Madrid, who are at home to Las Palmas on Sunday, in fourth.

Sevilla have now failed to win in 15 attempts at Camp Nou, losing 13 of those meetings and conceding 40 goals in the process.

Barcelona came close to an opener on multiple occasions in a frantic opening 10 minutes.

Lionel Messi, on his 600th Barca appearance, created an early effort for himself which was saved by David Soria, before Sergio Busquets' close-range effort was hacked away off the line by Sevilla's defence after the Argentina international crossed into his path.Luis Suarez then failed to lob Soria after a fine pass from Andres Iniesta and Ivan Rakitic sent a blistering left-footed 20-yard drive inches wide.

Luis Muriel briefly interrupted the flow of Barca attacks, firing narrowly off target at the other end after dispossessing Samuel Umtiti, but Iniesta's left-footed thunderbolt - which was similar to Rakitic's - soon had Soria worried again. The lively Alcacer headed just over from Rakitic's cross, but the striker made no mistake with his next chance on 23 minutes.

Taking advantage of a mistake from Sevilla captain Sergio Escudero, whose poor touch failed to deal with Suarez's throughball, Alcacer raced in on goal to slide a first-time finish past the onrushing Soria from 15 yards.

Sevilla improved after the break and saw Muriel's shot from 18 yards only just clear Marc-Andre ter Stegen's crossbar, and the visitors did find an equaliser shortly before the hour mark.Pizarro latched on to Ever Banega's corner and his downward header from eight yards bounced past Ter Stegen and into the top corner.

That seemed to wake Barca from their sluggish start to the second half and Gerard Pique almost sent the Camp Nou crowd wild when he fired an effort against the bar from 25 yards. Barca moved back in front just six minutes after the equaliser, Alcacer timing his run to prod Rakitic's deflected cross past Soria from six yards.

Alcacer was immediately substituted for Gerard Deulofeu after his second goal, but Barca were back on the attack soon after and Suarez wanted handball against Clement Lenglet when his shot struck the Sevilla defender's arm from close range, the striker having been found by Messi.

Barca had another penalty claim turned down when Rakitic raced into the area and was felled under pressure from Escudero late on, but it mattered little with Sevilla not threatening a second leveller as Valverde's side reached the international break in a dominant domestic position.

Monaco 6 Guingamp 0: Joy of six as Toure, Traore and Carrillo impress

Almamy Toure turned in an impressive performance while Guido Carrillo and Adama Traore each scored twice as Monaco hammered Guingamp 6-0 in Saturday's Ligue 1 encounter.

A disappointing 1-1 draw with Besiktas in midweek all but ended Monaco's hopes of reaching the Champions League last 16, but it was business as usual domestically for the champions.

Toure was the provider for Monaco's first two goals at Stade Louis II, Guido Carrillo and Adama Traore the beneficiaries from his superb work down the right.Keita Balde Diao essentially wrapped up the match just after the half-hour mark with his third goal in as many league games, before Fabinho's spot-kick made it 4-0 at the break.

Traore scored again with 15 minutes to go with Toure once more assisting and Carrillo added further gloss with his own brace as Monaco bettered Paris Saint-Germain's 5-0 hammering of Angers earlier in the day to stay four points adrift of their rivals in the table.

Monaco were dominant almost from the first whistle and it was little surprise when Toure's right-wing cross was met with an emphatic 12-yard header from Carrillo to open the scoring.

Toure was again influential for the second, the Malian sprinting down the right, flicking the ball over Franck Tabanou's head and cutting back for Traore to slot home from eight yards.Guingamp had completely fallen apart by the 37th minute. Carrillo set Rony Lopes, who appeared to be offside, free to the right of the box and he laid the ball across to Keita for the simple tap in.

A clumsy foul from Felix Eboa on Carrillo in the area about summed up Guingamp's half and Fabinho converted the resulting penalty with unerring accuracy into the bottom-left corner.

It took until the 75th minute to stretch the lead, Toure picking out Traore to finish into the bottom-left corner. And there was more to come as Rachid Ghezzal's right-wing cross was met with a thumping header from Carrillo.

Borussia Dortmund 1 Bayern Munich 3: Change in fortunes underlined as Bavarians extend Bundesliga lead

    46034BE200000578-5049929-image-a-141_1509822251824.jpg

Bayern Munich extended their lead at the Bundesliga summit and dealt another blow to rivals Borussia Dortmund with an impressive 3-1 Klassiker win at Signal Iduna Park.

A fourth top-flight win in succession since the return of coach Jupp Heynckes opened up a six-point advantage over rivals Dortmund, who slipped to third after RB Leipzig - four back from Bayern - beat Hannover 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

Bayern's trajectory starkly contrasts with that of BVB, who have seen their five-point lead after seven matchdays vanish and their hopes of Champions League progression all but dashed amid a run of just one win in seven in all competitions.

Arjen Robben became Bayern's highest-scoring foreign player in the Bundesliga when his 93rd goal for the club finished off of a lovely move, with Robert Lewandowski returning to haunt his former club again by doubling their lead before the break.

Lewandowski was deemed not to have got a touch to a cross from David Alaba - who was forced off with a hamstring injury in the second half - that ended up in the back of the net as the Bavarians put the result beyond doubt in the 67th minute.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failed to take his chances as his barren run stretched to five matches, but a consolation strike from Marc Barta may not be enough to stop Peter Bosz going back to the drawing board after a chastening defeat that underlined their change in fortunes. After Aubameyang wasted his first chance of the match, Robben rounded off an exquisite Bayern move to give Bayern a 16th-minute lead.

James Rodriguez brought a sublime cross from Thiago Alcantara – in as one of four changes from the side that beat Celtic 2-1 in the Champions League in midweek – down on his chest at the back post before laying off for Robben to pick out the top-left corner with a sweet strike from just inside the box.

Dortmund proved a threat on the counter-attack despite being penned inside their own half for long periods, Sven Ulreich racing off his line to stop Andriy Yarmolenko steering home from Gonzalo Castro's pass as the match sprang to life.

Bayern immediately broke and Lewandowski saw his drilled shot tipped over by Roman Burki - making his 100th appearance for the club - before Shinji Kagawa pulled wide as BVB countered from the ensuing corner to cap an enthralling two minutes.

Dortmund were made to pay for their missed chances when Lewandowski flicked Joshua Kimmich's cross home, a deflection off Julian Weigl looping the ball over Burki.

A foot injury meant Sokratis had to be replaced by Jeremy Toljan before half-time and the hosts' new centre-back pairing left Lewandowski unmarked within three minutes of the restart, the leg of Burki stopping him heading in his second.

Dortmund passed up a glorious chance to halve the deficit when a lack of communication between Aubameyang and Yarmolenko saw them stop one another from converting Christian Pulisic's cutback.

That proved costly in the 67th minute when Alaba's cross was missed by Lewandowski and Burki was unable to stop it finding the net despite getting a hand to the ball.Bosz's side pulled one back with two minutes remaining, Bartra curling a fine finish across Ulreich from the left side of the box after Pulisic did brilliantly to keep possession in the corner.

Castro missed another opportunity in stoppage time and the makeshift right-back's strike provided short-lived relief amid an increasingly dismal run for Dortmund.

West Ham 1 Liverpool 4: Salah, Matip and Ox humble the Hammers

    4603238B00000578-0-Mohamed_Salah_scored_twice_for_the_Reds_who_climbed_to_sixth_in_-m-56_1509822813115.jpg

Mohamed Salah netted a brace to inspire Liverpool to a 4-1 Premier League win which left Slaven Bilic facing the wrath of the West Ham faithful.Saturday's dismal defeat leaves the Hammers languishing a point and a place above the bottom three and the London Stadium crowd let their feelings be known at both half-time and the final whistle.

Salah opened the scoring in the 21st minute as he and the returning Sadio Mane, making his first start in a month, embarked on a devastating counter from a West Ham corner, 13 seconds elapsing between the taking of the set-piece and the ball nestling in Joe Hart's net.

Joel Matip's first of the season also arrived from a corner, this time in more conventional fashion three minutes later, as the defender converted the rebound after Hart's save from Mark Noble's deflection.

Manuel Lanzini halved the deficit 10 minutes into the second period with a fine finish, but any hopes of a Hammers comeback were effectively snuffed out 55 seconds later as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired home a rebound past the luckless Hart for his first league goal for the Reds.

There was little sympathy for the beleaguered Bilic from Liverpool, who wrapped up a resounding success with Salah's 12th strike of the campaign, lifting Jurgen Klopp's men back above Burnley into sixth.

The in-form Andre Ayew came into this clash with three goals in his past two outings and he almost added to that tally in the ninth minute.Lanzini's throughball deflected kindly into the path of the Ghanaian, who lifted his effort over the onrushing Simon Mignolet only to be denied by the outside of the post.

To further rub salt into the wound, two corners brought two Liverpool goals in the space of three minutes, the first of which arrived following West Ham's own attacking set-piece.

Salah poked the cleared ball onto Mane, whose searing pace took him away from his toiling chasers, and the Senegalese returned a pass to Salah for a composed finish under Joe Hart.

The Egyptian was involved in the second, too, as his low corner was deflected goalwards by Noble where Hart could only parry back into the danger zone and Matip tapped home.

West Ham thought they were back in it when Lanzini held off the attentions of Joe Gomez to chest down Ayew's cross and loft a calm finish past Mignolet, but with celebratory bubbles still in the east London air, Liverpool were level within 60 seconds.

Roberto Firmino fed Oxlade-Chamberlain, who saw his initial effort well saved by Hart but the winger reacted quickest to smash home his second attempt.Lanzini was more wasteful as the Hammers sought an equally rapid response, firing over with just Mignolet to beat and Javier Hernandez headed over before Firmino shot wide with Liverpool sensing a killer fourth.

That duly arrived 15 minutes from time as Salah controlled Mane's pass and rifled a left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner, sealing a marvellous outing for Liverpool and a devastating one for Bilic and West Ham.

Deportivo La Coruna 0 Atletico Madrid 1: Thomas rescues Simeone's men

    4602928600000578-5049727-image-a-16_1509816307826.jpg

Thomas Partey scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Atletico Madrid salvaged a 1-0 away victory over Deportivo La Coruna in LaLiga.

Just as it looked like Diego Simeone's men would continue a troubling run of form, Thomas beat Costel Pantilimon with an impressive curling strike when captain Gabi laid a free-kick into his path.

The late winner rescued Atleti, who were facing a fourth consecutive draw across all competitions after failing to create a clear goalscoring opportunity in regulation time.

Victory is a huge boost to Simeone, whose side had endured a disappointing home draw against Qarabag on Tuesday to leave them in huge danger of suffering a group-stage exit in the Champions League.

It is still nine games since they scored two or more goals, but Atleti remain unbeaten in LaLiga and move up to third in the table above city rivals Real Madrid, who do not play their game in hand against Las Palmas until Sunday.

And they sit within five points of leaders Barcelona, who host fifth-placed Sevilla later on Saturday.Depor, meanwhile, remain 16th after suffering their first defeat under new boss Cristobal Parralo.

The hosts were the better side in a quiet first half, with Zakaria Bakkali firing over from one 20-yard opportunity after being fed in a set-piece that was awarded when Stefan Savic was booked for hacking down Fede Cartabia at the edge of the area.

Depor then had a penalty claim turned down when centre-back Sidnei somehow found himself on the right wing. He impressively cut inside and twisted his way into the area past Saul Niguez and Lucas Hernandez, before going down under a challenge from the latter.

After a poor first half for Atletico, Simeone made a half-time substitution, with Nicolas Gaitan brought on for the ineffective Angel Correa. And Gaitan had an immediate impact, feeding Antoine Griezmann to fire the first shot on target straight at Pantilimon within a minute of the restart.

The substitute was then denied by Pantilimon himself from a 20-yard half volley, with Diego Godin heading just wide from the resulting corner.Guilherme headed just wide for Depor and Cartabia's deflected effort tested Jan Oblak before Simeone made another switch, Kevin Gameiro replacing Augusto Fernandez.

Neither side created a clear chance as the second half became increasingly scrappy, with Simeone's final change seeing defender Jose Gimenez brought on for an unhappy Griezmann, even though he had Fernando Torres and Luciano Vietto available.

A poor game looked set to finish goalless until the first minute of added time, when Lucas won a free-kick from Sidnei in a central area 20 yards from goal.Instead of shooting himself, captain Gabi teed up Thomas instead and the midfielder caught out Pantilimon with a curling effort into the far corner, his third goal in four games.

Martial embracing 'super-sub' mentality at Man Utd as goals flow again

Anthony Martial may want more starts at Manchester United but he is embracing the mentality of being a super-sub this season for the club. The French forward has netted six times for the Red Devils this season, with four of those efforts coming from off the bench .

He has contributed to positive start to the 2017-18 campaign for United, with his last strike proving to be a match winner in a crucial clash with fellow Premier League title hopefuls Tottenham.Martial’s contribution has drawn comparisons to Old Trafford legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer , who made his name as an impact player, and the 21-year-old is eager to make the most of any game time which comes his way.

He told MUTV on his role in 2017-18: "I think when I come on to the pitch as a sub, I’m hungry, desperate to play.“I want to get some action, to score, to make some key passes, I want to give everything I can to help the team.”

Martial, who finished his debut campaign in 2015-16 with United as the club’s top scorer with 17 goals in all competitions, found the target just eight times last season.

With that tally already well within reach, the France international believes is back to something approaching his best following a testing spell in 2016-17 which saw his value and ongoing presence at Old Trafford called into question .

He added, on the back of earning a recall to the Les Bleus fold : "At the moment, I’m happy, even if I could have done more, scored more goals and made more decisive passes. But I’m happy.

"I think the difference is that last year I didn’t have a good season but, for now, things are going pretty well. I’m achieving my objectives and I hope to score a lot more by the end of the season.

“I must continue to keep up good performances for my club and if I’ve got the chance to start over there [for France] I will do the best I can."

Martial’s next opportunity to impress before linking up with his country could come against Chelsea on Sunday , with United eager to keep themselves in the title picture by securing a positive result against the defending champions.“[Chelsea] haven’t started as well as they did last year, but Chelsea are a big team and they’ll certainly try to beat us,” said Martial.

“Both clubs are really great teams so it’ll certainly be a difficult match, but the most important thing is that we try to come away with a victory at the end of the day.”

'I'm not the worst coach in the world!' - Zidane hits back at Real Madrid critics

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has hit out at the hysteria that has surrounded two consecutive defeats for the club, pointing out that the results have not made him a bad boss overnight. Two reverses in the space of three days against Girona and Tottenham were greeted with consternation at the Santiago Bernabeu this week.

The former saw Madrid fall eight points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race, while a 3-1 loss at Wembley put Spurs in the driving seat to claim top spot in the Champions League Group H.

But while he is determined to arrest the slide, Zidane believes that some of the criticism he and his side have faced in the aftermath is unwarranted.

"These are things that I cannot avoid. I am not the best coach in the world, maybe, this season, I accept it," he fired to reporters. "But neither am I the worst in the world right now. Whether it's euphoria or if things go badly, I am always in the middle. It also happened when I was playing.

"What my players and I are thinking at the moment is that we are the same people, we are not happy with the two games we lost but it does not change what we are trying to achieve." A lengthy injury list at the Bernabeu has also harmed Madrid's chances, with several first-teamers on the sidelines for those defeats.

According to Zidane, however, the side are now ready to welcome back Dani Carvajal and Gareth Bale after a heart infection and hip injury respectively. "We are happy now, both have come back, we're still missing [Mateo] Kovacic but he will return next week," he added.

"Carvajal trained normally and Bale too, he came through his second training session and we are working normally. They will not be called up [against Las Palmas], we need to go easy with Dani. Bale too, he won't play with his national team.

"Now he has completed two sessions and we want him to stay with us so he returns as soon as possible - but with Madrid."Madrid will try to get their Liga challenge back on track on Sunday when they host Las Palmas at the Bernabeu.

Angers 0 Paris Saint-Germain 5: Cavani passes 100 Ligue 1 goals in thrashing

    46023FEB00000578-0-image-a-8_1509816817444.jpg

Edinson Cavani racked up a century of Ligue 1 goals as Paris Saint-Germain smashed Angers 5-0 on Saturday.

Having scored 112 times in Serie A before swapping Italy for the French capital, Cavani is just the third player in the last 20 years to score 100+ goals in two of Europe's top five leagues - Gonzalo Higuain and Zlatan Ibrahimovic the others.Cavani's first breakaway strike came in a dominant first half in which Kylian Mbappe and Julian Draxler latched onto Dani Alves deliveries to score.

Angel Di Maria and Neymar were not at Unai Emery's disposal at the Stade Raymond Kopa, but it mattered little as the leaders cruised to their 10th league win of the season.

The effervescent Cavani ran almost the length of the field twice inside a minute before scoring his second, taking his tally for the season to 13 in Ligue 1 already, before Mbappe rounded goalkeeper Michel to register his first brace for PSG to cap a fine win.

A trip to last season's champions Monaco, who are second, lurks later this month, but the Parisians look irresistible on this form, sat in top spot and having qualified for the Champions League last 16 in record-breaking fashion.

Angers had won just one of their last nine league games, but they were on the path to defeat in this game as early as the fifth minute when Alves was given the freedom of the right flank to deliver a cross for Mbappe, who sent a swivelling shot across Michel and into the far corner.

Thomas Mangani blazed over as Angers carved out a rare sight of goal, but more slack defending cost them soon after, Alves allowed to trundle forward before slipping a pass in behind the backline for Draxler to dink over the goalkeeper.Mbappe swung a wild effort high and wide, but PSG's third was not too far behind and it was a notable effort for their number nine.

Alves was again involved, freeing Mbappe in the right channel and the teenager's smart flick presented Cavani the chance to score which he took powerfully with a first-time effort.

Substitute Angelo Fulgini saw a shot deflected just wide as Angers' second-half switch to 4-3-3 helped them make an impression, but PSG scored again soon after. The goal summed up the very best of Cavani, who charged back into his own half to win the ball, before sprinting back up the other end to latch onto Adrien Rabiot's pass and rifle into the net.

Mbappe rounded off the scoring, racing clear on the end of substitute Lucas Moura's pass before finishing calmly - the teenager denied a hat-trick from close-range soon after as PSG delivered an ominous destruction without their star turn Neymar.

Mourinho: Maybe I will get credit after 26th trophy

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is tired of the lack of credit coming his way, pointing to his haul of 25 trophies as a reminder of his success.

While rival bosses have been praised this season, the Portuguese tactician is often criticised for his style.Mourinho, whose team visit Chelsea Sunday, said the 25-trophy mark was what managers needed to reach to be considered a success.

The United boss has already managed that total, while the likes of Pep Guardiola (21), Antonio Conte (six), Jurgen Klopp (five) and Mauricio Pochettino (none) are yet to do so.
"I think that probably 25 trophies is the line that people made about a successful manager," Mourinho said."For some managers, they still need to win one more trophy to reach that 25 level.

"Some others need 25 trophies to reach that level, some others need four, some others they need 12, some need 15, some need 24."I have 25 but I still want one more. So maybe when I win one more trophy than 25 I have a little bit of credit."

United are second in the Premier League, having scored 23 goals – a tally only bettered by unbeaten leaders Manchester City (35).

Moyes would accept Everton return but hints at different job offer

David Moyes would accept an offer to return as Everton manager, but hinted he has interest from other clubs.Everton sacked Ronald Koeman last month after a 5-2 defeat to Arsenal left them in the Premier League's bottom three.

Moyes spent 11 years at Goodison Park before leaving for an ill-fated 10-month spell in charge of Manchester United ahead of the 2013-14 season.

The Scot has since endured disappointing spells in charge of Real Sociedad and Sunderland, the latter being relegated from the Premier League under his stewardship last season. However, Moyes admitted that a return to Everton is appealing should the opportunity arise.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS, he said: "Of course it would have to be yes, but I've got other things ongoing and it might not be too long before I'm back in work. "If the job came up I would be interested, but I've got other interests as well.

"Bill [Kenwright] is one of the best chairmen so anyone who does get the job will be working with a really good chairman who's incredibly supportive."I had 11 great years there – I loved it.

"Sometimes going back isn't always the answer but Jose Mourinho went back to Chelsea and won the league, and now Jupp Heynckes is back at Bayern Munich."I'm a better coach and better all-round manager. I think in football you have to go through difficulties."

Asked why he thinks Everton have struggled this season despite bringing in the likes of Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Davy Klaassen during the last transfer window, Moyes said: "I'm amazed because I had them down to be top six."I think they've bought good players, but I'm not sure if they've bought all the right pieces and I don't expect them to be where they are right now."

Another man who has been linked with the vacancy is Marco Silva, whose Watford side have impressed with their style of play in the Premier League this season.

However, the Portuguese says there has been no contact from the Toffees."Nobody has approached me and I am staying focused on the next match," the Hornets boss said ahead of Watford's trip to Everton on Sunday.

"We need to respect our club, our opponent and our sole focus is to prepare our players for the match on Sunday, and do the best we can to win."

Moyes to be offered six-month West Ham deal

David Moyes is being lined up to replace Slaven Bilic as West Ham manager for the rest of the 2017-18 season.

A 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool seems to have been the final straw for the club and Bilic, with the Hammers sitting just above the relegation zone heading into the international break. Goal understands the club have made their decision to move on and are lining up former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes as his replacement.

Moyes will be offered a six-month contract by the club, with Phil Neville set to join up as part of the back-room team and possibly as the assistant manager.

Asked if he'd be surprised if West Ham sacked Bilic, Sam Allardyce said on Match of the Day: "It wouldn’t surprise me because there were rumours not so long ago that Slaven had two games or three games, and I think that no contract extension in the summer, in his last year of his contract, so it all pointed out to the first 10 games for Slaven were the most important, and he knew that.”

For his part, Bilic seemed to see the writing on the wall after getting trounced by Liverpool. "I have to talk to the chairman because, of course, we have to discuss this defeat," he told BT Sport . "It's not the first one. It's the second in a row at home.

"It's a very difficult situation. That's for me. That's all I can say now."I always believe in myself. I wouldn't be here otherwise. It's hard for me to talk about [the future] now."

The timing of the move would not be a shock, with the club having the international break to allow the new manager to settle in before returning to Premier League play with a match against Watford on November 19.

Wenger: Ozil can match City's stars

Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is capable of matching Manchester City's attacking stars, according to manager Arsene Wenger.

Wenger's men face the impressive and unbeaten Premier League leaders at the Etihad Stadium Sunday.City have been dominant this season, holding a five-point advantage at the top after scoring 35 goals and conceding just six in 10 league games.

Led by the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Sergio Aguero, Pep Guardiola's attack has starred, but Wenger feels Ozil – often criticised for his relaxed displays – can match City's best."I think so – every big player wants to play big games and this is a big game," the Frenchman told UK newspapers, via The Telegraph.

"Ozil at the moment is in very good shape physically. People speak about Alexis Sanchez but, for us, Ozil's performance will be important as well."He contributes a lot to the way we play. He can be an asset every time we attack because he's a guy who can create chances."

Arsenal sit fifth in the table, with Ozil contributing one goal and two assists in eight Premier League games this season. But the Germany international has created 30 chances – equal with De Bruyne for the most in the league and two more than Silva.
