Hiring Ancelotti the dream for Italy but Tavecchio staying would prolong the nightmare

The Gazzetta dello Sport called Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 "the apocalypse" and football fans across the country are certainly struggling to come to terms with the full horror of the situation. This is something new for the majority of Italians: a World Cup without the Azzurri was unprecedented for them. It was unthinkable. Now, though, disbelief has given way to rage.

What is most upsetting - if wholly unsurprising - is that the country's footballing catastrophe is unlikely to prompt a complete and long overdue overhaul of the entire footballing administration.

Indeed, at a special summit of the key figures in Calcio on Thursday, president of the Italian Footballers' Association Damiano Tommasi walked out in disgust after his counterpart at the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), Carlo Tavecchio, confirmed that he would not be stepping down. No one else in the room objected to Tavecchio remaining.

Of course, someone had to be seen to pay for a very expensive fiasco that could cost the country more than a billion euros and Gian Piero Ventura was rightly dismissed for his incompetence.Over the course of a dismal World Cup qualifying campaign, it became clear that the problem was not that his coaching methods were unsound, but rather there was no method at all.

His treatment of the likes of Lorenzo Insigne left not only fans and journalists mystified, but also the players themselves. However, to make Ventura the scapegoat for all of Italy's ills would be ridiculous.

The need for structural reform has been evident for some time now: financial mismanagement, endemic racism and territorialism, crumbling, empty stadia - the list of off-field problems goes on and on.On the field, the national team has been in decline for some time now. It is worth remembering that the Azzurri were knocked out at the group stage of the World Cup in both 2010 and 2014.

There has been some continental success in recent years but the run to the final of Euro 2012 was founded upon the genius of Andrea Pirlo and Juventus' brilliant backline, while the coaching excellence of Antonio Conte carried a poor Azzurri squad to the quarter-finals in France last summer.

Indeed, Conte succeeded in spite of the federation - not because of them - and it is for this reason that Carlo Ancelotti, the No.1 candidate to take over, is still mulling over whether to replace Ventura at the helm.

As Goal has already outlined, it is not a question of money. Ancelotti's preference to return to club football - which he reaffirmed last month - is no longer an issue either. His country needs him and he is willing to answer the call.

However, he astutely wants to both see and assess the merits of the new sporting project, which should be unveiled at a special Federal Council meeting on Monday.

It is easy to see why Tavecchio is so desperate to land Ancelotti. His is the most prestigious and well-qualified of the "big names" that the FIGC president needs to land in order to save his own job.Indeed, Ancelotti is everything that Ventura is not. He doesn't just have the kind of international experience and reverence that the former Torino boss was so sorely lacking, he is also a proven winner, a coach who has won trophies in all of Europe's 'Big Five' leagues.

As Gianluca Vialli told the Gazzetta on Thursday, "Carlo's respected by everyone, he has balance and international experience, he’s won everywhere and he speaks the languages. I’d make him the Italian Vicente Del Bosque."Of course, there are some doubts about Ancelotti given the shocking and swift way his last job, at Bayern Munich, was brought to an end.A man renowned for cultivating an excellent relationship with players completely lost the dressing room at the Allianz Arena, with serious doubts raised over the quality and intensity of his training sessions.

Players that initially felt liberated under the easy-going, empowering Ancelotti quickly came to miss the meticulous, obsessive Pep Guardiola.By complete contrast, though, succeeding the clueless Ventura would bring no such unfavourable comparisons. Furthermore, he is ideally suited to the task of allowing players to go and express themselves.

Marco Verratti would not be left brutally exposed in a 4-2-4 formation, Insigne would not be left sitting on the bench and Jorginho would not be ignored completely until it was too late. Whether it was 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, Ancelotti would employ a system designed at getting the best of the talent at Italy's disposal.

Essentially, Ancelotti would bring cohesion where there was only confusion; replace unrest with unity. He would have the support of the players - he has already worked with Verratti, Italy's greatest talent, at Paris Saint-Germain - the press and the people. He also has the backing of Tavecchio but does he really want it? Ancelotti's primary concern is, understandably, being tied to the old administration - with an emphasis on 'old' - and all of its failings.

There have been calls for Paolo Maldini to be brought in alongside his former boss as team manager but the legendary defender certainly wouldn't want to be a part of the FIGC in its current guise.

Only on Wednesday, he pointed out: "We need to rebuild our foundations so we can face [the future] without fear, but I still see the same faces in Italian football from when I quit the national team 15 years ago."Maldini and Ancelotti are close and share similar views on the game. The 49-year-old wrote the preface for Ancelotti's autobiography. One can understand, then, why Ancelotti is prepared to bide his time.

He knows that Italy needs and is demanding a fresh start but whether it gets one is still unclear. Hiring Ancelotti is the dream but Tavecchio staying would still be a nightmare.

    Wenger: I trust Lacazette completely

Arsene Wenger says he trusts Alexandre Lacazette completely and is not scared of Harry Kane as Arsenal prepare to host Tottenham in the north London derby on Saturday.

Record signing Lacazette did not start as the Gunners suffered heavy losses, 4-0 and 3-1 respectively, in crunch matches away to Liverpool and Manchester City this season.

That has prompted suggestions Wenger does not trust the France international striker, a claim the manager rejected out of hand.Pressed on the possibility he remains reluctant to use the 26-year-old in the biggest games, he replied: "No, not at all.

"I have a big choice to make every time. Big decisions to make up front. He has played many games, I think it's only Man City away he didn't start [recently]. I trust him completely."Asked if Lacazette could be named from kick-off at Emirates Stadium, Wenger said: "The decision is not made yet, but it's a possibility."

Having sat out England's friendlies against Brazil and France, Tottenham's Harry Kane is expected to start for the visitors, Wenger acknowledging he has made plans to combat the star centre-forward."To keep him quiet, yes," he said."[But] we have no fear, we are focused on finding our strong points and expressing them."

Retired defender Lee Dixon, who won the league under Wenger in 1998 and 2002, has suggested this crop of Arsenal players are not tough enough to get the better of Mauricio Pochettino's slick Spurs side.
Wenger, though, claims to be wearily familiar with combating the opinions of his disgruntled ex-players."That's the kind of remarks you get for 20 years," he said, referring to his longevity at the club.

"At the end of the day it's down to the quality of the team. I believe that the football we play has to be efficient. When you're a defender, it's not to make any mistakes, when you're a striker to put the ball in the net."

Mourinho: England can win the World Cup

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes that England have the potential to win the World Cup.Gareth Southgate's side continued their preparations for the finals next summer with goalless draws against Germany and Brazil, keeping clean sheets against two of the tournament's favourites.

England's performances have impressed the United boss, who thinks that the current generation of Three Lions contains the perfect blend of ages and abilities.

"I think England must have a chance because the players are really good," Mourinho told Sky Sports. "There's a great generation of players at different ages and with different qualities."They have good experience at club level, playing in the Premier League and plenty of them play in the Champions League too."England have great potential to do something important."

However, Mourinho believes that Southgate will have plenty of competition in Russia, with teams like Argentina, Spain and France capable of challenging for the trophy."In South America, there are a couple of important teams," Mourinho continued. "In Europe the same three or four so I can't believe next summer we will have a huge surprise."

The draw for the World Cup takes place on Friday, December 1, with England seeded in Pot 2 for the tournament. Holders Germany, hosts Russia and European Championship holders Portugal are among the teams in Pot 1.

Mourinho: Man Utd system can support Ibrahimovic and Lukaku

Jose Mourinho believes that his system can allow for both Romelu Lukaku and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be on the pitch at the same time. It was confirmed on Friday that the Swede was back after a seven-month injury lay-off and that he could feature against Newcastle on Saturday.

With the Belgian having solidified his spot at as the focal point of Manchester United's attack so far this season, questions have been asked over whether or not Mourinho will rotate his two strikers, but the former Chelsea boss does not see any reason the two can't take the field together.

"[Ibrahimovic] can play everywhere and, this season, we’ve played with two strikers many times," the boss told a press conference. "We’ve played [with two strikers] so many times, especially when we play with three at the back, with wing-backs, it allows us to bring in a second striker.

"We are ready to do it," he added. "We’ve been preparing ourselves since pre-season – when we started playing three at the back – so they can play together, no problem."

While we may soon see Ibrahimovic and Lukaku on the field together, it won't be from the off in Saturday's contest against Newcastle.

The 36-year-old may be back in the squad, but his manager isn't ready to run him out in the starting side just yet. "As a start, I see him on the bench and it's where I see him," the manager said. "It's where he's going to be tomorrow [Saturday], on the bench."

Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Marcos Rojo are all slated to return to the squad this weekend after long injury lay-offs, with United hoping to close the eight-point gap between them and rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

:shocked:Mourinho apoplectic at FA & England as Jones receives SIX injections before Germany friendly

Jose Mourinho is far from pleased with the English FA's medical team after their handling of Phil Jones.

The Manchester United boss claims that the defender was given six injections on matchday before lasting just 25 minutes for England against Germany before being forced off with a thigh injury. The Portuguese, who says he has not spoken to England boss Gareth Southgate on the matter, claims he's never seen anything of the sort in his career.

"I have been a manager since 2000 and in 17 years I don't have one single player that had injections of anaesthetic to play a friendly. Never. Never," he told a press conference.

"I am not an angel and I had players be injected to play official matches, crucial matches but a friendly -- to get six local anaesthetic injections to play a friendly, I've never heard of that."But Phil Jones had it and had it before the match and after 25 minutes he was out and he is out [against Newcastle].

"I am just telling a fact. He was injected in the afternoon of the match, he didn't feel good during the warm up. Between the warm up and the start of the match he had five more local injections to play the friendly."

While the club will have to do without the services of Jones, Mourinho will be able to rely on several players who are returning from injury. The former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss confirmed on Friday that Marcos Rojo, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were all available for Saturday's matchday squad, though Mourinho made it clear that Ibrahimovic won't be in the starting side.

The Old Trafford outfit sit second in the table, eight points back of Manchester rivals City, and take on a Newcastle side that have picked up just one win in their last six.

Conte rules out taking Italy job: I'm totally committed to Chelsea

Antonio Conte has officially ruled out taking over as Italy national team manager, maintaining that he is "totally committed" to Chelsea. The former Juventus boss was previously in charge of Italy for two years before leaving his post after Euro 2016 and heading for Stamford Bridge.

His replacement Gian Piero Ventura was sacked on November 15 after the Italians failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 following a 1-0 play-off defeat to Sweden.

Goal understands Carlo Ancelotti is the primary candidate to take over and although Conte had been mooted as a possible option, the Blues boss has denied he wants the job.

When asked if he would be interested in the Italy post, he told reporters: "[For now] I am very focused on doing my best for Chelsea, and my only focus now is to try to create a good structure at Chelsea."[I want to] create a good basis with this team, we won last season but we know very well there is a lot of work to do, and I am very focused on Chelsea and totally committed to the club.

"My feeling is the same as any Italian person. First of all, I am very sad. This is a big stop for our football movement. After 60 years and you miss the World Cup. You know very well the importance of football in Italy.

"Football is at the top of the interest of every single person but I think you have to try together to find the right solution. Every department in Italy has to take the responsibility - not only one, two or three people because when you fail, the whole country fails.
"It is not the fault of one or two or three people. In this case, I think it is my failure, your failure [in the media], the failure of Italy and I think that this moment is very sad for us. But we must use this moment to reflect and to try and to find the right solution, not only with words but also facts.

"If you find a manager and you don't put him in the job in the best way to change something, then it is not enough to change only the manager. You must also put this person in the best condition to change something, not for them to find a lot of obstacles in their way."

Chelsea are back in action on November 18 following the international break when they face West Brom at the Hawthorns, with the Blues having beaten Manchester United last time out in the Premier League.

Stuttgart 2 Borussia Dortmund 1: Bosz pressure builds after more Burki mishaps

    4674A24F00000578-5094117-image-a-4_1510952731255.jpg

Another poor display from goalkeeper Roman Burki saw Borussia Dortmund slip to a third Bundesliga defeat in a row as they went down 2-1 at Stuttgart on Friday.

The Switzerland international, who has come in for criticism for displays in the Champions League in particular this season, endured another difficult 90 minutes as Dortmund slipped to a potentially damaging defeat that extends their recent run to one win in eight games in all competitions.

Much of the pre-match talk was dominated by the omission of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, dropped from the BVB squad for a breach of discipline, with Andre Schurrle handed his first league start of the season in the visitors' attack at Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Under-pressure head coach Peter Bosz had hoped for a strong reaction to the 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich before the international break but they were behind inside the first five minutes, as Chadrac Akolo capitalised on a dreadful mix-up between Burki and Marc Bartra.

Dortmund levelled just before the break, with Maximilian Philipp blasting home after Schurrle had a penalty saved, but Burki allowed Josip Brekalo's shot to slip through his legs six minutes into the second half after Dortmund's defence was caught cold by a counter-attack.

Andriy Yarmolenko had a second equaliser disallowed but Dortmund did not create much else to worry Ron-Robert Zieler in the Stuttgart goal, as they fell to a defeat that leaves them six points behind leaders Bayern, having played a game more.

It took only five minutes for Burki to be thrust back into the spotlight. Bartra allowed a stray long pass to bounce and passed the ball back to his goalkeeper just as Burki was running off his line, which resulted in the ball deflecting into the path of Akolo, who had a simple task of finishing into the empty net.

Dortmund sought a swift response, with Yarmolenko causing problems down the Stuttgart left and Schurrle looking a threat, while Mario Gotze forced a save from Zieler at the end of a promising team move.

Gotze was again denied by an athletic stop from Zieler after being teed up by Yarmolenko but, despite their dominance of possession, the visitors were becoming frustrated by a tough-tackling Stuttgart who were denying them clear-cut opportunities to equalise.

That was until first-half injury time, though. Gotze's cross was blocked by the elbow of Benjamin Pavard and, although Schurrle's penalty was saved by Zieler, Philipp reacted quickest to rifle the rebound high into the net.

However, six minutes into the second half, Dortmund's dreadful defending and Burki's low confidence was again exploited. Brekalo raced clear on the break with nobody but half-time substitute Dan-Axel Zagadou tracking him, before cutting back onto his left foot past the centre-back's poor challenge and firing a shot through the legs of Burki and into the net.

BVB heads had dropped again and only a superb sliding tackle from Bartra denied Takuma Asano from making it 3-1 from close range, while Berkay Ozcan nodded over the crossbar and Asano saw a header well held by Burki.Yarmolenko lobbed Zieler in style but the goal was ruled out for a handball by the winger, and Dortmund got no closer to salvaging a point from another poor performance.

Pressure is now likely to mount on Bosz, with matches against Tottenham, Schalke, Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid to come in the coming weeks.

Sunderland target Coleman steps down as Wales manager

Chris Coleman has resigned from his position as Wales manager amid speculation he is set to take over at Championship club Sunderland.

Coleman's reputation sky-rocketed after leading Wales - previously without a major tournament appearance since 1958 - to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, but he was unable to follow that up with qualification for next year's World Cup in Russia.

Wales were beaten by Republic of Ireland in their crucial final match of the qualifying campaign, and subsequent friendlies against France and Panama have proven to be Coleman's last matches in charge.

Sunderland, who are bottom of England's second tier following their relegation from the Premier League last season, have been without a manager since sacking Simon Grayson in October.Football Association of Wales (FAW) chief executive Jonathan Ford added fuel to talk that Coleman will become Sunderland boss by confirming the 47-year-old's intention to return to club management.

"We are extremely disappointed to see Chris' tenure as Wales manager come to an end," Ford said of the former Fulham, Coventry City and Real Sociedad coach.

"The FAW and Wales as a nation will be eternally grateful for the job he has done over the last six years as national team manager, from travelling the length and breadth of Wales outside of the media spotlight to talk to players and supporters, to guiding us to the semi-finals of the European Championships.

"We wish Chris the very best of luck for the future as he returns to club management, a desire for which he has always been honest and open about."Coleman would be the Black Cats' fifth permanent manager since March 2015.

Manchester City's Sane wins Premier League Player of the Month

    46715F7800000578-5092547-image-a-36_1510918319219.jpg

Leroy Sane has claimed the Premier League Player of the Month award after a sparkling performance in the month of October.Manchester City won all three of their league matches that month and Sane was a big reason why, claiming a goal and an assist in all three of his side's matches.

Harry Kane had won the award for September while Sadio Mane took home the prize in August.
October continued a bright start to the league season for the Germany international, as he has now scored six goals and added five assists in 11 appearances this season for City. He's also contributed a pair of assists in the Champions League and two goals in the Carabao Cup.

The 21-year-old Sane has already eclipsed his league goal total from 2016-17, as he scored just five times in the Premier League last season. The month was kind for City honorees as the club's fine form also brought Pep Guardiola his second straight Manager of the Month award.

The club, who are eight points clear of rivals Manchester United at the Premier League summit, travel to Leicester City on Saturday, before returning to action in the Champions League at home to Feyenoord.

Mourinho has 'immense respect' for Benitez

Jose Mourinho insists he has "immense respect" for Rafael Benitez and does not feel any extra incentive to beat him when Manchester United host Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Premier League match at Old Trafford will be the pair's first meeting in the English top flight since August 2007, when Mourinho was in charge of Chelsea and Benitez was at Liverpool.

The two experienced managers had a simmering feud following Mourinho's arrival in England in 2004, fuelled by a number of high-profile encounters between the teams, including a Champions League semi-final tie in 2005 that was decided by a controversial Luis Garcia goal.

The animosity reared its head again in 2015 when Benitez's wife commented on her husband's role in "tidying up the messes" of Mourinho, the Spaniard having taken charge at Inter, Chelsea and Real Madrid after Mourinho's spells at those clubs. However, speaking on Friday, the United boss made it clear he has huge admiration for Benitez's successes, telling a news conference: "I respect him as both a person and as a professional.

"He is with me in one privilege on the list of the few managers in Europe that won the Champions League and the Europa League, so we are side to side in that little group and I have immense respect for him. So, I am more than happy to see him and to salute him, and then to play one more match because at the end of the day, it's just one more match.

"I know the way Newcastle play, I know the way Benitez prepares his team, I know that it's going to be difficult but we have to try to get back to the points that we need."

Mourinho had earlier confirmed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Marcos Rojo will all be in the squad for the visit of Newcastle.Pogba has been unavailable since suffering a hamstring injury in September, while Rojo and veteran striker Ibrahimovic are both yet to play this season, having sustained serious knee injuries in April.

The former Sweden captain suggested this week he will shift to a number 10 role this term behind Romelu Lukaku, and Mourinho admits he hopes to be able to fit both into this set-up.

"They are good players, they can play together," he said. "The problem is when the players aren't good, but with good players, it's easy [for them] to play together."Mourinho also praised Lukaku after he set a new Belgium goal record of 31, a landmark not recognised by FIFA, when he scored the winner in the friendly win over Japan.

"For Romelu to be so young, beating the record, is fantastic," he said. "Romelu is very young and I think he has 10 more years to play for his country, so I can imagine [his total] number of goals [for Belgium] will be amazing."

Guardiola beats Wenger and Dyche to manager of the month award

    467136A400000578-0-image-a-64_1510917653927.jpg

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has been named the Premier League manager of the month for October.

The 46-year-old beat Mauricio Pochettino, Arsene Wenger and Sean Dyche to take the award for the second time in a row and third time in his Premier League career.

City have maintained their impressive form this season as they remain unbeaten after 11 games in the league.

Starting the month with a 7-2 win over Stoke City, the Etihad Stadium outfit team kept up their incredible Premier League form with further victories over West Bromwich Albion and Burnley scoring 13 goals along the way.

Those strong displays have carried on to November as Guardiola's started the race for this month's award with a 3-1 win over Arsenal, after beating Napoli 4-2 in the Champions League. City are eight points clear of second-placed Manchester United in the Premier League with 10 wins and a draw and hold a lead of three at the top of their European group.

They pay a visit to Leicester City on Saturday before welcoming Feyenoord in midweek.

:yes:Salah could be the signing of the season, says Liverpool’s Moreno

Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno has said that Mohamed Salah could be the signing of the season with his amazing statistics in the final third.

The Egypt international has been in excellent form for Jurgen Klopp’s team since he transferred from Roma in the summer. And has scored 12 goals and four assists in 17 games across all competitions.

Moreno stated that the left-footed forward could become the bargain of the season with his incredible run in front of goal for the Reds.
“He [Salah] could be the signing of the season for sure; his numbers are incredible,” Moreno told The Guardian. “He’s scoring almost every game, providing assists, doing loads of work for the team. As a defender I wouldn’t want to face Mane and Salah.”

Liverpool welcome Southampton to Anfield for Saturday's English Premier League encounter before travelling to Spain to lock horns with Sevilla for a Uefa Champions League fixture on Tuesday.

'Arsenal target Fekir won't be sold in January' - Lyon chief

In-form Lyon star Nabil Fekir will not leave the club in January, according to the club's president Jean-Michel Aulas.

Fekir, 24, has caught the eye after scoring 11 goals in as many Ligue 1 games so far this season, while also registering three assists.

The attacking midfielder is thriving after being named Lyon's captain at the start of the season and is reportedly on Arsenal's radar as a result.

However, Lyon chief Aulas has ruled out selling Fekir, who has also been linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid, during the winter transfer window, telling SFR Sport: "Of course [he will stay in January], and nothing says he'll leave at the end of the season."He's under contract, he's happy in Lyon.

“He's enjoying a period of success football-wise, but also in terms of management as he's captain of an Olympique Lyonnais that has been able to get itself back on track, and it's also thanks to him."

Aulas also says there is a “very good chance” Fekir, who featured for France during the international break, will remain at Les Gones in 2018/19 as well. “Of course, he has a very good chance of being [at] Lyonnais,” Aulas added. “He's a symbol.

"In between times, there will be the World Cup. If France is in the final, which I hope for, and Nabil scores the goal that makes France world champions, of course he'll get offers.

“But that said, we're going to do everything for Nabil to stay and I think he wants to stay."A switch to Arsenal would see Fekir reunite with Alexandre Lacazette, who left Lyon to for the Emirates Stadium in a big-money move last summer.

Bayern begin talks over Wagner deal

Jupp Heynckes has confirmed Bayern Munich have begun talks with Hoffenheim over a potential move for Sandro Wagner in January. The Germany international has been heavily linked with the Bundesliga leaders in recent weeks as they look to bolster their attacking options.

Robert Lewandowski is Bayern's only fit striker at present and has expressed his frustration on a number of occasions that players have not been drafted in to ease his workload.

Lewandowski – who has 11 goals in as many league games this season – was criticised by Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge for airing his concerns, but they appear to have been acted on.

Anthony Modeste, Kasper Dolberg and Timo Werner have all been linked with the reigning champions but Wagner – who began his career with Bayern – appears most likely to make the move to the Allianz Arena."If you are interested in a player who has a contract, you have to go directly to the club, " the veteran coach told a news conference.

"Hasan Salihamidzic [Bayern's sporting director] has spoken to [Hoffenheim sporting director] Alexander Rosen about the possibility of a transfer,"This is the phase we are in, no further. He has developed well [since leaving Bayern]."

Wagner has scored six goals in all competitions for Hofffeinheim this season having netted on 11 occasions last season as Julian Nagelsmann's side finished fourth in the Bundesliga table.

'I am more than just a goal machine' - Ronaldo ignoring criticism over his Real Madrid form

Cristiano Ronaldo has dismissed claims his poor form in front of goal has left him disgruntled with life at Real Madrid.Since moving to the Spanish capital in 2009 the Portugal international has scored at least 25 La Liga goals each season – including a phenomenal 48 in 2014-15.

This season his profile form has deserted him, though, Ronaldo scoring just once in seven league appearances as third-placed Madrid have slipped eight points behind leaders Barcelona. Some reports have suggested Ronaldo's form is linked to his mood at the club and that he is unhappy, but he insists he is feeling good in the Spanish capital.

"I don't agree with what people are saying about me," Ronaldo told an interview with L'Equipe ."People don't know the difference between playing well, playing okay and not scoring goals.

"I'm looked at as a goal machine, like a guy who has to score all the time. If that isn't the case, nobody cares if I've played well or not, I'm only judged on scoring.

"I accept the criticism, but I don't agree with it. That's why I avoid reading or hearing what is said about me. But I have no choice but to accept it; I can't control the world."Defeats to Girona and Real Betis have left Madrid with an uphill challenge to defend their league title this season, but Ronaldo is not worried.

He added: "The team? We're playing pretty well; not perfect, but good! I'm happy and I feel good. We dropped some points in the league but, in the Champions League, we're okay.

"It's only the start of the season and there are a lot of matches left to play. You have to stay calm and continue to work, because it's obvious we can do better."Things will change; I'm not worried. Other people are more so than me. I'm in 'delta mode,' if you know what I mean: calm, serene.“Two years ago, it was the same situation; last year, the same. And this year, it starts again."
