Paris Saint-Germain 4 Nantes 1: Cavani double puts hosts six clear

    467B13FD00000578-0-image-m-19_1511030921220.jpg

Edinson Cavani continued his prolific season with a double as Paris Saint-Germain cruised to a 4-1 home victory over Nantes to move six points clear at the top of Ligue 1.

After defending champions Monaco drew away to Amiens on Friday, PSG took full advantage as they overcame a slow start to hand Claudio Ranieri's men only their second defeat from 11 league matches.

The hosts scored twice in quick succession shortly before half-time to seize control, Cavani putting them in front and Angel Di Maria scoring a fortuitous second.

Prejuce Nakoulma scored 55 seconds after being brought on as a second-half substitute by Ranieri, but Javier Pastore soon restored PSG's two-goal cushion and Cavani got his 15th goal in 12 league games this season late on to seal the points.Neymar, the world's most expensive player, had a quiet outing, while Kylian Mbappe was left on the substitutes' bench for the first time since signing from Monaco and was not brought on by Unai Emery.

PSG have now won seven straight Ligue 1 home games and are unbeaten at Parc des Princes in the top flight for 30 matches.

Cavani blasted wide from the edge of the area with his first sight at goal, having shown strength to latch on to Neymar's pass, while Dani Alves had a 30-yard free-kick easily saved by Ciprian Tatarusanu as PSG struggled to create clear openings early on.

Nantes threatened at the other end when a fast break led to Lucas Lima crossing for Leo Dubois, who could only send his first-time effort over at the far post in a first half short of chances.

But a frustrating period for PSG came to an end in the 38th minute when Pastore found Cavani and the striker cut inside onto his right foot to slam a low shot past Tatarusanu from 12 yards, Neymar having won possession on the halfway line.

The second goal arrived in bizarre fashion less than four minutes later. After Di Maria had an effort saved by Tatarusanu, the Argentina international played a one-two with Alves from the resulting corner and saw his inswinging cross missed by team-mate Marquinhos and Nantes midfielder Abdoulaye Toure, as well as the keeper, before finding its way into the far corner.

Ranieri brought on Jules Iloki for Lima at half-time and then Nakoulma in place of Andrei Girotto as Nantes looked to reverse the momentum and his second change had an immediate effect.

On the hour mark, Iloki's cross from the right was helped back across the face of goal by Dubois and converted by Nakoulma from close range to give the visitors hope of a comeback.

But those dreams were crushed by Pastore just five minutes later, Tatarusanu's poor attempt to save his strike from inside the area seeing the ball loop up and in off the far post after Marco Verratti's throughball had created the opportunity.

Cavani got his second and PSG's fourth with 11 minutes remaining. The Uruguay international initially tried to feed Verratti, but was left with the simplest of finishes after Diego Carlos' attempted clearance was smashed against team-mate Nicolas Pallois in a piece of dreadful Nantes defending.

He had a late chance for a hat-trick, but Tatarusanu got down well to deny him shortly before a last-ditch Chidozie Awaziem clearance denied Neymar his chance to join the scorers as PSG stretched their advantage at the summit.

Burnley 2 Swansea City 0: Old boy Cork stars as Dyche's men win again

Jack Cork inspired Burnley to a 2-0 win against former side Swansea City on Saturday, earning his new employers a third straight top-flight victory for the first time in the Premier League era.

Sean Dyche's men keep pace with the Premier League's top six after cruising to a comfortable victory against the lacklustre Swans, who remain one place off the bottom off the table.

Cork made his England debut in a brief cameo against Germany in the international break and he scored the opener at Turf Moor, heading in a terrific left-wing cross from Robbie Brady.Another of Burnley's Republic of Ireland contingent set up the second before the half-time break, Jeff Hendrick capitalising on more slack defending to play in Ashley Barnes, who slammed home his first Premier League goal since April.

Under-pressure Paul Clement introduced Wilfried Bony for the ineffective Jordan Ayew at the interval and the powerful striker breathed life into Swansea's limp attack without ever threatening Nick Pope's goal.

With Burnley having only conceded two home goals this season a fightback from the visitors was always unlikely, even though they had beaten the Clarets in all four previous Premier League meetings between the sides, and Clement may now face awkward questions over his future.

Ben Mee headed a deep right-wing Brady corner wide of the far post before Matt Lowton's wildly hacked clearance almost ended in a spectacular own goal in a low-key opening.

Steven Defour tested Lukasz Fabianski twice in quick succession before the goalkeeper saved a downward Barnes header from a fine Lowton centre as the hosts built up momentum.

And Swansea could do little about a flowing move after 29 minutes that provided Cork with his first league goal since swapping the Liberty Stadium for Turf Moor in July.Cork and Barnes combined to free Brady on the left and the Irish winger's sublime cross was perfectly weighted for an unmarked Cork to power in a header.

A rampant Burnley made it two before half-time, Barnes thumping in from the edge of the box after Defour intercepted a loose pass and fed Hendrick, who slipped the striker in on goal.

Swansea improved after the interval and substitute Bony slid a fine reverse pass through to Tammy Abraham only for the new England international to blast the chance over the crossbar.

Bony fired wide of Pope's left-hand post after 59 minutes before Renato Sanches bent a free-kick over the crossbar from a promising angle 25 yards out.But Pope - who has kept five clean sheets in eight Premier League starts deputising for injured captain Tom Heaton - was never tested and the impressive hosts held firm with relative ease, while a third goal poked in by James Tarkowski was correctly ruled out for offside.

Swansea's sixth loss in seven Premier League games piles the pressure on next weekend's home match against Bournemouth, while a back injury that forced top goalscorer Abraham off on a stretcher late in the game compounded Clement's misery.

Arsenal 2 Tottenham 0: Ozil and Sanchez come up trumps for Wenger

    4677D87B00000578-5095403-image-a-43_1511010905680.jpg

Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez proved amid the uncertainty over their futures that they remain Arsenal's star performers with match-winning displays in Saturday's 2-0 victory over rivals Tottenham.

The build-up to the derby clash had focused largely on the supposed power shift in north London as Mauricio Pochettino has turned Spurs into Premier League title challengers, but their ability to take the fight to Manchester City may have been ended following a tame reverse at the Emirates Stadium.Ozil was at his creative best, delivering a teasing free-kick for Shkodran Mustafi to head in the opener, before his link-up play helped set up Sanchez's strike just before half-time.

Both Ozil and Sanchez have been linked with January departures, with Arsenal facing losing them on a free in June, but their desire could not be questioned in a contest that they dominated between them.

Pochettino had Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Hugo Lloris at his disposal after the trio missed international duty over the break, but Spurs' chances were few and far between as Kane especially delivered a sluggish performance.

A first north London derby defeat for Pochettino further dents his side's hopes of catching runaway league leaders City, with Arsenal's deserved triumph helping them make ground in the race for Champions League qualification, moving them to within just one point of their visitors.

Arsenal fans had grown frustrated at Wenger leaving Alexandre Lacazette on the bench after his goalscoring cameo against Pep Guardiola's side last time out and the France striker blazed the first chance over, before Kane drilled straight at Petr Cech following Laurent Koscielny's wayward clearance.

The hosts were making inroads behind Ben Davies, with Hector Bellerin and Ozil flashing crosses into the box that were not converted, while Christian Eriksen hit the post and Kane's header was saved to keep Arsenal on their toes. But the hosts suddenly seized control with two goals in quick succession.

Davinson Sanchez was penalised for holding namesake Alexis' shirt in a challenge and Ozil's ball was guided brilliantly by Mustafi into the net via a kiss off the post, although the defender appeared offside.

The Gunners returned to a previous source of joy to double their lead, Ozil threading a ball through the right channel, between Davies and Jan Vertonghen to Lacazette and his pull-back found Sanchez, who controlled and blasted high into the net from point-blank range.Kane's frustrations threatened to boil over when he lunged in on Granit Xhaka and Mustafi blocked the striker's shot as Arsenal continued to hold Spurs at arm's length.

Howls of derision met Wenger's decision to replace Lacazette with Francis Coquelin in the 73rd minute, but the ineffective Kane, who failed to score in this derby for the first time, and Alli were withdrawn two minutes later to bring a cheer again.

Cech clawed away an Eric Dier header, with Davies awaiting a tap-in, and Alli's replacement Son Heung-min hooked over the crossbar in a late Spurs flurry, but there was little doubt of Wenger securing a derby win for the first time in seven outings to breathe new life into Arsenal's campaign.

Liverpool 3 Southampton 0: Record-breaking Salah blows Saints away

    4679BB8300000578-0-image-a-14_1511020533899.jpg

Liverpool defeated Southampton 3-0 in the Premier League to seize on Tottenham's north London derby defeat, as Mohamed Salah broke a Robbie Fowler record and Philippe Coutinho shone on his return to the starting XI.Egypt international Salah struck twice in the space of 10 first-half minutes to put the hosts firmly in charge against the lacklustre Saints.

In doing so Salah, signed from Roma for a club-record fee in June, notched the ninth goal from his first 12 Premier League appearances on Merseyside, surpassing Liverpool's previous best of eight from 12 set by Fowler in 1993.

The ex-Chelsea attacker's exploits have helped to disguise the defensive failings of Jurgen Klopp's side, although they were not at risk of being exposed by the toothless away team at Anfield on Saturday.

Coutinho, named in the side from kick-off after recovering from a thigh injury, set up Salah's second and scored the third himself in a performance that demonstrated the continuing importance of a player targeted heavily by Barcelona in the off-season.

And the victory, Liverpool's fourth in succession in all competitions, means they are just one point behind fourth-placed Champions League qualification rivals Spurs, who lost 2-0 at neighbours Arsenal earlier in the day, as Klopp's attention turns to the crunch away match against Sevilla on Tuesday.

The visitors almost gifted Liverpool the lead in the ninth minute, as Virgil van Dijk's mistake, Cedric Soares' missed clearance and a Fraser Forster fumble saw the ball fall to Salah, but the Egypt international's shot was deflected wide.

Another error prompted Liverpool's opener to arrive in the 31st minute and this time Dusan Tadic was to blame, the Serbia international losing possession after attempting to dribble the ball clear following a corner.

A quick exchange of passes after the turnover saw Georginio Wijnaldum tee up Salah, who curled a brilliant strike into the top left corner from 20 yards.Southampton's defence were found badly wanting for the second goal 10 minutes later.

Coutinho glided forward unopposed and prodded a clever pass into the area, which Salah raced on to and slid between the legs of the helpless Forster.

Southampton enjoyed a rare sight of goal six minutes into the second half, Sofiane Boufal cutting into the area from the left but seeing his shot blocked by the massed ranks of the Liverpool defence.Coutinho went close four minutes later, dribbling directly at goal and shooting narrowly wide with Forster scrambling.

The England international shot-stopper was left with no chance five minutes later. He did well to parry a fierce Roberto Firmino strike from a tight angle on the right side of the penalty area, but the rebound fell kindly to Coutinho, who steered home a cool finish to put the result beyond any doubt.

Bayern Munich 3 Augsburg 0: Lewandowski double sends leaders six points clear

    4679F9AD00000578-5096031-image-a-219_1511027798198.jpg

Robert Lewandowski's double helped Bayern Munich to a 3-0 victory over Augsburg at the Allianz Arena on Saturday as the champions capitalised on RB Leipzig's failure to win.

The Poland star took his tally for the season to 13 goals in as many league games, with Arturo Vidal also on the scoresheet, as Jupp Heynckes' side made it five top-flight wins in a row.The hosts struggled initially to break down an Augsburg side who had won only one of their previous six matches, but an incorrect offside call went Bayern's way to allow Vidal to lash home a loose ball in the box.

Lewandowski struck following a fast break just before half-time and the 29-year-old netted his second at the end of a superb passing move early in the second half, as Bayern cruised to another three points and put more pressure on Augsburg boss Manuel Baum. The victory also gives the champions a six-point lead at the top of the table, with Borussia Dortmund having lost to Stuttgart on Friday and Leipzig held to a 2-2 draw by Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern threatened from the outset, Niklas Sule and Mats Hummels both missing headers from James Rodriguez deliveries and Lewandowski seeing a close-range effort stopped by Marwin Hitz.

Augsburg's good pressing game was keeping the home side frustrated despite their dominance of the ball, but the breakthrough came in the 31st minute, albeit in questionable fashion.Lewandowski looked to be offside as he challenged for a header from a James free-kick, and when the loose ball broke to Vidal in the area, the Chilean lashed it high into the net on the turn.

Kevin Danso should have done better with a free header he sent straight into Sven Ulreich's grasp and Bayern punished that miss seven minutes before the break.Caiuby was dispossessed by Vidal in the centre circle and he sent Lewandowski clear into the box, where the striker slotted confidently past Hitz.

Bayern's third came four minutes after the break at the end of a quite brilliant passing move. The home side, under heavy pressure from Augsburg, worked the ball from James in midfield to the back and eventually to Joshua Kimmich down the right wing, and his cross was expertly volleyed into the bottom-right corner by Lewandowski.

Vidal was just about denied by Hitz on the line after a glorious chipped pass from James, and the Augsburg keeper got fingertips to a fizzing Arjen Robben strike to keep the scoreline looking respectable, as Bayern eased through the closing stages to extend their run to nine games without defeat since Heynckes took charge. The veteran had the added joy of celebrating his 500th Bundesliga win, 174 as a player and 326 as a coach.

Crystal Palace 2 Everton 2: Niasse equaliser boosts Unsworth's case

Crystal Palace missed the chance to pick up three precious points as the Premier League's bottom club were twice pegged back by Everton in an entertaining 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park.

All the goals came in the first half of a clash between two clubs stuck at the wrong end of the table, with David Unsworth's hopes of getting the Everton job on a full-time basis boosted by a battling display on the road.

James McArthur popped up at the right time to score the first after a mere 51 seconds, only for Leighton Baines to convert a controversial penalty inside six minutes and make it 1-1.

After Wilfried Zaha tapped Palace back ahead, Roy Hodgson's side presented Everton with a second equaliser, Oumar Niasse scoring against the club he so nearly joined before the last transfer deadline.

The visitors improved in the second half but they were indebted to Palace substitute Christian Benteke for fluffing a glorious late chance to claim maximum points.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was passed fit to start for the hosts and the midfielder – who came off in the first half of England's 0-0 midweek draw with Brazil with a back problem – was influential in Palace's opener. The on-loan Chelsea player cut easily inside international team-mate Michael Keane and although his curling effort was kept out by Jordan Pickford, McArthur reacted quickly to volley in the rebound.

The home fans weren't celebrating for long, however, as Niasse's theatrical fall when feeling contact from Scott Dann's outstretched arm convinced referee Anthony Taylor to point to the spot.

Leighton Baines slammed the ball home to draw Everton level with his 20th Premier League penalty, moving him just two behind manager Unsworth's record for a defender in the history of the competition.Still, Palace responded well to the disappointment of conceding a dubious equaliser.

They produced the best move of the opening half to re-take the lead, Zaha on hand to provide the finish into an empty net after Joel Ward's low cross had zipped off the sodden surface to evade the diving Pickford.

Yet their hard work was undone by carelessness at the other end in first-half stoppage time, Speroni's unnecessary pass putting Dann in trouble. Idrissa Gueye robbed possession from the ponderous centre-back and teed up Niasse for his fifth of the campaign.Speroni went some way to making amends for his part in the avoidable equaliser with a reactionary save after the break from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, one of two changes made by a clearly unimpressed Unsworth during the half-time interval.

The introduction of Calvert-Lewin and Tom Davies gave Everton some much-needed energy, albeit the latter was a little enthusiastic with a heavy tackle on Loftus-Cheek that resulted in a booking.Hodgson utilised his bench to send on the fit-again Benteke for the final 15 minutes, with the striker given a brief cameo after missing 10 games through injury.

However, the Belgium international's lack of recent action came back to bite Palace when he was played clean through by Zaha, his scuffed shot failing to even trouble Pickford as it bobbled wide of the target.

West Brom 0 Chelsea 4: Hazard leads rampant champions in piling pressure on Pulis

    46799F4E00000578-5095659-image-a-110_1511019469720.jpg

Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata ran riot as Chelsea outclassed West Brom 4-0 at the Hawthorns to turn up the heat on Tony Pulis. As Antonio Conte celebrated his 50th Premier League match in style, the contrast to his opposite number in the dugout could not have been greater, as Pulis' side never came close to avoiding a fourth consecutive defeat.

Conte kept David Luiz to the bench on his return to the squad but the visitors hardly needed defensive reinforcement in cruising to their 10th win in 12 league away games.

On the ground where they sealed last season's title, Chelsea raced to a two-goal lead inside 23 minutes as Morata and Hazard exchanged assists for their quickfire goals. It was all too easy for Marcos Alonso as he added a third from Cesc Fabregas' set-piece in the 38th minute and the champions remained in cruise control until Hazard completed his brace with a well-taken second just beyond the hour.

The victory sees Conte's men at least momentarily move into second, but the pressure on Pulis will only intensify with the Baggies now winless in all competitions since August.

Contrary to what was ahead, West Brom began with purpose and looked to have taken a fifth-minute lead through Salomon Rondon, but his header was correctly ruled out for offside.

Chelsea quickly overcame their early wobble and went close through Tiemoue Bakayoko, before Morata made the breakthrough in the 17th minute.Ben Foster could only parry Hazard's thumping left-footed effort as far as the Spain international, who tucked away the rebound for his eighth of the campaign.

It was that pair who combined again just six minutes later. Morata this time freed Hazard with a classy flick-on and, clean through on goal, the Belgium star made no mistake after rounding Foster.

And the contest was all but over by half-time as Alonso ghosted unmarked to the far post and volleyed in Fabregas' floated free-kick, ensuring the home side left the pitch to a chorus of boos.

An isolated Rondon continued to battle hard after the restart and was denied a promising opening by Gary Cahill's well-timed challenge, while Jake Livermore's air-swing from the subsequent corner almost cost his side on the counter-attack.

Pulis had replaced Grzegorz Krychowiak with Claudio Yacob at the break but the midfield switch did little to patch up the holes at the back, Morata finding space to test Foster once more.

Instead it was Hazard who was first to a brace when he silkily brought down Fabregas' ball over the top, steadied and fired through the retreating defenders.
A mix-up in Chelsea's defence allowed substitute James McClean to stride through with a chance for a consolation, but the Republic of Ireland winger dragged his shot wide to sum up a miserable afternoon for the hosts.

Roma 2 Lazio 1: Nainggolan stunner proves decisive

    wire-1748328-1511034937-689_634x462.jpg

Roma moved to within two points of Serie A leaders Napoli as goals from Diego Perotti and a superb effort from Radja Nainggolan claimed a 2-1 win over rivals Lazio in the Derby della Capitale.

Eusebio Di Francesco's side were dominant for much of Saturday's clash at Stadio Olimpico, with Lazio unable to replicate the form that has seen them win nine consecutive games in all competitions.

After Edin Dzeko had gone close on three occasions prior to the interval, Roma finally got a deserved breakthrough four minutes after the restart - Perotti keeping his cool from 12 yards following Bastos' foul on former Lazio defender Aleksandar Kolarov in the box.

Roma doubled their tally four minutes later when Nainggolan drove forward with purpose before planting an unerringly accurate finish into the bottom-left corner, giving Thomas Strakosha no chance.

Lazio were given a lifeline with 20 minutes remaining, however, as - after utilising the video review system - the referee awarded a penalty for Kostas Manolas' handball. Ciro Immobile stepped up to thump home and set up a grandstand finish, but Roma held firm despite late pressure from the visitors, with Marco Parolo going closest for Lazio.

The victory lifts the Giallorossi above their city rivals and Inter into third place, as Serie A's title race intensifies.

Leicester City 0 Manchester City 2: Jesus & De Bruyne on target as Guardiola's title tilt continues

    4679E69E00000578-5095791-image-a-7_1511022196334.jpg

Manchester City's unstoppable march at the Premier League summit shows no signs of slowing down as goals from Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne secured a 2-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side have been in irresistible form so far this season and Saturday's result moved them nine points clear of second-placed Chelsea, with rivals United playing later in the day and Tottenham having lost at Arsenal.

Jesus gave City the lead a minute before the half-time break with a simple tap-in after a move that had sliced open the hosts' defence.De Bruyne then doubled their advantage just three minutes into the second period as he thumped home from 25 yards for his third league goal of a sparkling campaign.

The only blot on City's copybook was the enforced first-half withdrawal of England defender John Stones, who pulled up holding his right hamstring.David Silva and Jesus missed chances to extend City's lead as the second half wore on, but two blistering attacks either side of half-time were enough to secure another impressive success.

Guardiola handed a first Premier League start since August 26 to Vincent Kompany, but the Belgian started sluggishly and was lucky not to be dismissed after just three minutes.

The 31-year-old hacked down Jamie Vardy as the England striker latched onto Vicente Iborra's pass, but referee Graham Scott deemed Stones to be in a covering position and opted to give the City captain only a yellow card.Kompany was involved again soon after, stretching well to divert Riyad Mahrez's dangerous cross just wide of his own goal as the hosts continued to impress going forward.

City's trademark swashbuckling approach was largely absent in the early stages, but a typically incisive move involving Fabian Delph and Leroy Sane resulted in Kasper Schmeichel tipping over Silva's shot from just inside the penalty area.
Raheem Sterling was then only inches away from connecting with Sane's fizzed cross as the visitors started to hit their stride.

City finished the half strongly as Silva thrashed over from the edge of the area before the Spaniard teed up Jesus for the opener. Sterling carved open the Foxes defence with a threaded pass into the path of Silva, who had the simple task of rolling it across the six-yard box for the Brazilian to grab his eighth league goal of the season.

Leicester's positive approach at the start of the second period was nearly rewarded when Harry Maguire's effort from a corner was deflected onto the post.City took full advantage of that reprieve to deliver a stunning counter-attack, which resulted in Sane finding De Bruyne on the edge of the area for the former Chelsea man to unleash a superb left-footed strike into the roof of Schmeichel's net.
Jesus was then denied his second just moments later as Schmeichel thwarted him from just six yards out and Silva once again fired over as his wait for a goal continued.

City comfortably kept Leicester at arm's length in the final 20 minutes as the hosts desperately tried to find a way back into the game and were ultimately able to claim yet another three points at something approaching a canter.

Leganes 0 Barcelona 3: Scruffy Suarez double ends goal drought

    4679C50A00000578-5095683-image-a-2_1511020585116.jpg

Luis Suarez ended his Barcelona goal drought with a pair of scruffy goals as LaLiga's leaders escaped Leganes with a hard-earned 3-0 win.Barca were nowhere near their fluent best, but ground out their 11th win from 12 games this term regardless.

Suarez broke his five-game goal drought with a scavenger's effort after an Ivan Cuellar error rendered a promising Leganes start redundant, and the hosts' goalkeeper was left helpless by a deflection as the Uruguay international struck again in the second half, with Paulinho tapping in a late consolation.

At the other end, Marc-Andre ter Stegen made a string of saves to preserve the comfortable nature of the scoreline, with half-time substitute Claudio Beauvue missing two fine Leganes openings.

Daunting trips to Juventus in the Champions League and second-placed Valencia next week now await Ernesto Valverde's side, although this victory ensures they will travel to Mestalla sure of keeping top spot.

Leganes were defensively determined and dangerous on the counter-attack, Nordin Amrabat off-target from a raid forward in the 20th minute, but Cuellar's error undid their good work just before the half-hour. Paco Alcacer's radar was off as he whipped a ball into the area, but Cuellar's attempt to parry clear spun back into danger and Suarez pounced to end his drought.

Barca's joy was almost immediately tempered as Gerard Pique picked up a booking to rule him out of next week's clash with Valencia and Alexander Szymanowski brought a sharp save out of Ter Stegen before the break as Leganes stuck to their task.

Ter Stegen was again called into action when Amrabat sent Beauvue clear seven minutes into the second half, but the Frenchman could only hit the keeper from close-range.Suarez was booked for a tangle with Cuellar, though the goalkeeper made the most of minimal contact, and the Barca star gleefully rubbed it in the goalkeeper's face when he scored his second scrappy effort of the game shortly afterwards.

Cuellar could count himself unlucky as he denied Alcacer's shot, only to see the rebound fall to Suarez, whose acrobatic effort was deflected past his own goalkeeper by Ruben Perez.

Ter Stegen smothered Amrabat to deny Leganes again soon after and the difference of luck could be summed up when Pique deflected Szymanowski's cross goalwards, but straight into his goalkeeper's hands.Beauvue blazed over unmarked from 12 yards as Leganes' hopes of a comeback began to fade and Aleix Vidal failed to mark his return from an ankle injury when he blasted a rebound over, following a blocked Suarez effort.

Cuellar spurned a driven Lionel Messi effort and denied Suarez a hat-trick on the follow-up, but the Argentine's determination, despite a game spent on the periphery, led to the clincher in the final minute, Paulinho prodding in his fourth goal of the season to add a sheen to the scoreline that neither side particularly deserved.

Paul Pogba marked his return from injury with a goal and an assist and Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his comeback as Manchester United turned around a first-half deficit to record a convincing 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United.

Frenchman Pogba teed up compatriot Anthony Martial for the equaliser before tapping in a third, helping Jose Mourinho's side overcome Dwight Gayle's 14th-minute opener to stretch their unbeaten run at home to 38 games.

Chris Smalling had nodded the hosts ahead in first-half stoppage time while Romelu Lukaku ended his personal drought after the break, the Belgian striker smashing in his first club goal since September 30.Mourinho allowed Ibrahimovic a late cameo off the bench, the Swede making his first appearance in 216 days since suffering a serious knee injury in April.

The result sees United reclaim second place from Chelsea and remain on the coat-tails of pacesetters Manchester City, who won 2-0 at Leicester City earlier on Saturday to lead their neighbours by eight points.

With Eric Bailly and Phil Jones both ruled out through injury, Victor Lindelof was handed a starting spot in a team that reverted to a flat back four after lining up with three centre-backs in the defeat at Chelsea on November 5. The defender barely put a foot wrong in helping Sweden stun Italy in the World Cup play-offs, yet one unfortunate slip let Newcastle in to take a shock lead.

Lindelof looked in position to cut out DeAndre Yedlin's cross until he lost his footing, allowing the late-arriving Gayle to stride onto the ball and angle a low shot across De Gea and into the net via the goalkeeper's right post.

United were fortunate Jacob Murphy narrowly failed to repeat the trick soon after before they turned the game around with two headers before the break.

Both were laid on a plate by sumptuous crosses, starting with Pogba cleverly creating space on the right to set up Martial's equaliser with a clever clip to the back post that allowed his fellow Frenchman to beat Yedlin in the air.

Ashley Young followed his team-mate's lead to create the second, as his lofted ball from the left allowed Smalling - who had stayed forward after United had opted to work a short corner - to nod the hosts ahead.

The half-time scoreline was harsh on Newcastle, who had defended doggedly and carried a threat on the counter. However, any hopes they had of picking up something on their travels disappeared when United extended their lead nine minutes into the second half.

Once again Mourinho's side profited from a pinpoint cross, Lukaku's ball in from the right appearing to tee up Marcus Rashford. However, rather than go for goal, the England international unselfishly cushioned a header inside to allow the advancing Pogba to mark his comeback from a hamstring problem with the easiest of finishes from inside the six-yard box.

Lukaku put two first-half misses to the back of his mind to round out the scoring, exchanging passes with Juan Mata before lashing a shot beyond Rob Elliot as United inflicted Newcastle's heaviest defeat under Rafael Benitez.

The loudest cheer of the night, however, was reserved for Ibrahimovic's introduction in the 77th minute. His every touch was hailed by the crowd and he so nearly marked the occasion with a goal, Elliot keeping out an acrobatic volley that demonstrated how the Swede has lost none of his flair for the dramatic during his lengthy absence.

Sampdoria 3 Juventus 2: Champions slip further off the pace after thriller

    wire-1752916-1511109946-449_634x422.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri's decision to rest several of his key stars backfired as Juventus lost ground in the Scudetto race with a shock 3-2 defeat at Sampdoria.

Paulo Dybala and Gianluigi Buffon were among several regulars left out of the starting XI and the Serie A champions paid the price as they conceded three second-half goals.Gonzalo Higuain and Juan Cuadrado both failed to make the most of earlier chances to leave the door ajar for the home side.

Sampdoria needed no invitation to take advantage as Duvan Zapata crashed in a 52nd-minute header before Lucas Torreira fired home from outside the area to completely swing the momentum.

Gianmarco Ferrari appeared to have put the seal on an emphatic victory when he made it 3-0 with just over 10 minutes remaining, although the Bianconeri mounted a stoppage-time fightback as Higuain scored from the spot after Ivan Strinic was adjudged to have fouled substitute Douglas Costa.

Dybala had also come off the bench in a bid to rescue Allegri's side and the Argentina star fired in a quickfire second to set up a tense final few seconds, but the damage was done. The defeat leaves Juve four points adrift of leaders Napoli and they could drop to third depending on Inter's result against Atalanta later on Sunday.

Higuain looked certain to open the scoring as early as the second minute when he latched on to Federico Bernadeschi's throughball, but a vital sliding challenge from Matias Silvestre did just enough to divert the shot wide.

Sampdoria were otherwise dealing comfortably with the visitors' occasional incursions, although they suffered a setback when Dennis Praet limped off following a heavy challenge from Stephan Lichtsteiner. And the loss of the midfielder might have been compounded just beyond the half-hour had Cuadrado made the most of a one-on-one opportunity.

The winger was superbly sent through on goal by Higuain but, from a narrow angle, opted to shoot rather than pass and saw his powerful finish deflect almost inadvertently off Emiliano Viviano and around the far post.Juventus' frustrations grew when their appeals for the VAR to adjudicate on a potential handball against Strinic were scuppered by the referee's half-time whistle.

Seven minutes later, they were trailing. Bernadeschi's wild attempted clearance from Fabio Quagliarella's cross hung in the air and Zapata rose above Lichtsteiner to head it beyond Wojciech Szczesny.

Allegri's side came close to falling further behind when Zapata race onto Quagliarella's reverse pass, but Szczesny was this time quick off his line to smother the chance.

Dybala was called from the bench shortly after the hour and almost had an immediate impact, the forward's close-range shot blocked amid a goalmouth scramble.

Juventus started to knock on the door with Viviano next required to tip the ball away from a stretching Sami Khedira, while Higuain's heavy pass ruined a promising counter-attack.

But, against the run of play, Sampdoria made their multiple reprieves count as Torreira speared an unstoppable strike into the bottom-left corner from outside the area after being set up by Gaston Ramirez.

Ferrari looked to have put a comprehensive seal on the three points when he turned in a close-range third from Quagliarella's clever pass in the 79th minute.

The Bianconeri did rally at the death to score twice in the closing moments – Higuain converting from the spot and Dybala clinically picking out the bottom corner after an assist by Costa.

Those strikes heightened the nerves of the home fans, but it came too late to prevent a first defeat in six league away games for Juve, as Samp strengthened their position in the top six.

Napoli 2 AC Milan 1: Insigne stars after Italy snub as leaders move four points clear

    467BFCD400000578-5096187-image-m-10_1511039879202.jpg

Lorenzo Insigne and Piotr Zielinski scored as Napoli beat AC Milan 2-1 at the San Paolo on Saturday to move four points clear at the top of the Serie A table.

Insigne was an unused substitute as Italy were beaten by Sweden in their World Cup play-off during the international break and he was on a mission to prove Gian Piero Ventura wrong.

Ventura was berated by Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi for not turning to Insigne during the Azzurri's 1-0 aggregate loss, the coach paying for the defeat by losing his job.

And Insigne was on target as Napoli took the lead after 33 minutes thanks to a video assistant referee referral showing the forward was just onside when he ran on to Jorginho's terrific pass to score.

While Milan put the hosts under pressure in the second half, Napoli wrapped up the points when a sublime Dries Mertens pass sent Zielinski clear to nutmeg Gianluigi Donnarumma, with Alessio Romagnoli's injury-time effort a mere consolation.

Though the win sees unbeaten Napoli stretch their advantage over champions Juventus - who are in action at Sampdoria on Sunday - Milan stay four points adrift of the European places in seventh after suffering a sixth league defeat of the campaign.

Jorginho smashed an early effort over the crossbar for the hosts before Donnarumma made a smart near-post save after 13 minutes when Insigne floated a cross on to the head of Jose Callejon as the league leaders dominated the early exchanges.

Suso lashed Milan's first effort wildly off target before a more accurate strike from the playmaker called Pepe Reina into action for the first time.

Allan and Marek Hamsik both hit decent openings straight at Donnarumma, but Napoli's profligacy did not stop them breaking the deadlock, Insigne scoring his fifth goal in as many appearances against Milan.

Jorginho sent his fellow Italy international through on goal to beat Donnarumma with a smart lofted finish, the officials initially disallowing Insigne's strike before a video replay showed Romagnoli was playing him marginally onside.Insigne went close to adding a second on the brink of half-time, but Donnarumma sprang high to his left to parry the shot away.

And the same pattern of play continued after the interval, the teenager denying Mertens and Hamsik in quick succession as Napoli sought a second goal.

A bright spell of Milan pressure yielded no clear chances, Leonardo Bonucci showing his frustration by shooting off target from the halfway line.Perhaps inevitably, Napoli put the game to bed with a trademark counter-attack after 72 minutes.

Mertens sent Zielinski clear with a superb turn and pass, the Poland international rifling a first-time left-footed strike through the legs of an exposed Donnarumma.
Giacomo Bonaventura and Nikola Kalinic forced saves from Reina as a desperate Milan rallied and the visitors scored a consolation in stoppage time.

For once Napoli switched off at the back and Romagnoli smashed in a superb strike, but Maurizio Sarri's side held on to extend their unbeaten run to 25 Serie A games.

Atletico Madrid 0 Real Madrid 0: Defences dominate in historic derby

    467C28EE00000578-5096441-image-a-70_1511042654861.jpg

Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have lost further ground on LaLiga leaders Barcelona this weekend after a lifeless 0-0 draw in the first derby to be played at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 win over Leganes earlier on Saturday and the subsequent derby stalemate means the Madrid sides are now 10 points behind Ernesto Valverde's high-flying Catalans.

The two teams, who sit fourth and third respectively, are also three points adrift of second-placed Valencia, who travel to Espanyol in their game in hand on Sunday.

Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane's sides have both fallen short of expectations so far this campaign and failure to win such a high-profile game will increase the strain on the two head coaches.

The best opportunity of the game came in just the third minute when Angel Correa clipped wide from an excellent opening after inadvertently being played in by Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo struggled to make any significant inroads against Atletico's obdurate defence, which means the star forwards have now scored just two goals between them in a combined 16 league appearances this season.

Atletico and Real Madrid know they must register wins against Levante and Malaga respectively next weekend if they are to get their stuttering league seasons back on track and stand any chance of closing the significant gap to Barca.

Atletico started at a blistering pace and should have been ahead inside three minutes courtesy of some kamikaze defending by Zidane's men.A poor pass from Marcelo put his defence under pressure and after numerous failed attempts to clear the ball it eventually fell invitingly to Correa, but the Argentina international contrived to steer his shot over the onrushing Kiko Casilla and agonisingly past the left-hand post.

Gabi fired a speculative long-range volley off target midway through the first half before the visitors hit their stride and carved out a number of clear opportunities to take the lead.

After some clever passing on the edge of the Atletico penalty area, Cristiano Ronaldo released Toni Kroos but the Germany midfielder could only scuff his shot into Jan Oblak's side netting.

This was followed soon after by a dipping Ronaldo free-kick from 35 yards that Oblak turned around the post and a close-range header from Sergio Ramos that flew wide.Ramos took a boot to the face from Lucas Hernandez in that incident, suffering a suspected broken nose, and was withdrawn at half time in place of Nacho.

The second period failed to bring about a change in fortunes for either side, with both defences standing firm and repelling almost every attack.Benzema's disappointing evening came to an end in the 76th minute as Zidane threw on Marco Asensio in a bid to inspire a late winner.

It was the hosts that came closest to breaking the deadlock and securing a famous win, though. Substitute Kevin Gameiro lifted a shot over Casilla, but the backtracking Varane brilliantly headed off the line to deny what would have been a certain winner that, in truth, neither side deserved.

Zidane's Madrid held scoreless away in La Liga for the first time

For the first time in 35 matches, a Real Madrid side coached by Zinedine Zidane failed to score in a league match away from home after the Blancos were held 0-0 at Atletico Madrid on Saturday. It was the second time this season Zidane's men have been held without a goal, with the club having lost 1-0 to Betis at home earlier in the year.

The two goalless outings in 12 La Liga matches this season are one more than the club had in Zidane's first 58 games in charge.
The match also marked the first time in over a decade that Real and Atleti played out a scoreless draw in their derby match. The last time the two sides finished 0-0 was in May 2005 at the Bernabeu and it's been 24 years since Atletico hosted a scoreless derby, with the last instance taking place in October 1993.

One of the primary threats in the match, Antoine Griezmann, extended his longest run without a goal as an Atletico player. The France international has now gone 723 minutes, eight games in all competitions, without finding the net.

The draw leaves both sides sitting 10 points back of Barcelona in La Liga's table, but it did help Atletico set their longest unbeaten run in the league under Diego Simeone, with the club having now played 16 times (9 wins, 7 draws) since last tasting defeat.
However, if either Madrid club wants to win La Liga, they'll now have to create a bit of history. No side has ever come back from a double-digit deficit to win the title.
