AC Milan 5 Austria Wien 1: Andre Silva sends Montella's men through to the last 32

    46A506D200000578-0-image-a-59_1511482726615.jpg

AC Milan put their domestic struggles to one side as they clinched a place in the last 32 of the Europa League with a 5-1 victory over Austria Wien on Thursday. The Serie A side eased the pressure on manager Vincenzo Montella with a repeat of the 5-1 triumph in the reverse fixture back in September.

Andre Silva scored a hat-trick on that occasion and the striker netted two more on home turf, while fellow forward Patrick Cutrone also found the net twice in a comfortable victory.

Ricardo Rodriguez scored the home side's first of the night after Wien had taken a shock lead, Christoph Monschein breaching Milan's flimsy offside trap to break the deadlock midway through the opening half.

However, with the legendary Kaka watching on from the stands, Milan ended a four-game goal drought in front of their own fans in emphatic fashion, in the process wrapping up top spot in Group D with a game to spare.

Perhaps still smarting from a 2-1 loss to Napoli at the weekend, Montella's side started sluggishly before the shock of conceding lifted them out of their early slumber.

Wien capitalised in the 21st minute, Monschein running clear to round goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and score from a tight angle. Despite Leonardo Bonucci's desperate slide, the ball squeezed between the centre-back's legs and trickled over the line.

The advantage, however, lasted just six minutes. An unmarked Rodriguez converted Fabio Borini's deflected right-wing cross at the back post to bring Milan level and end their barren spell on home turf.

The Swiss defender was also involved in his side's second, as his weak free-kick rolled perfectly into the path of Andre Silva, who capitalised on the unexpected opportunity by slamming home a low shot.

Cutrone joined his strike-partner on the scoresheet before half time, nodding in Borini's cut-back cross as goalkeeper Patrick Pentz was caught horribly out of position.Bonucci failed to provide the final touch in the right net shortly after the interval, volleying over from a corner, but Silva put the game out of Wien's reach with his second of the night in the 70th minute.

The Portugal international took his tally in the group stages to six in five matches, though his weak shot on the turn only reached the net due to Pentz's right foot getting stuck in the turf as he attempted to make what seemed a routine save.

Pentz did prevent Silva from securing another European treble against Wien, diving to turn aside a stinging drive, but Cutrone still added a fifth in injury time, the teenager waltzing around the beleaguered goalkeeper to complete his double and duplicate the result from Vienna.

Everton 1 Atalanta 5: Cristante and Cornelius knock more shine off Premier League strugglers

    46A48D8700000578-5112315-image-a-4_1511469241659.jpg

Doubles from Bryan Cristante and substitute Andreas Cornelius launched Atalanta into the knockout stages with a 5-1 win as Everton turned in another appalling Europa League performance.Former AC Milan youngster Cristante slotted in an early opener and made the points safe when he headed home after the hour.

Captain Alejandro Gomez also missed a penalty for Gian Piero Gasperini's side, who are level on 11 points with Lyon. Group E's dominant teams will play to settle top spot in Bergamo on December 7.

Everton's involvement in the competition seemingly cannot end soon enough, with Sandro Ramirez's fine first goal for the club in the 71st minute coming as scant consolation for a sparse Goodison Park crowd.

Along with beleaguered caretaker boss David Unsworth they endured a late salvo from their Serie A opponents that began in the 86th minute when Robin Gosens brilliantly clattered in from long-range via the post.One-time Cardiff City misfit Cornelius then twice capitalised on defending pitched some way south of shambolic, leaving Unsworth's long-term job prospects in tatters.

A much-changed Everton side captained by Wayne Rooney started on the front foot before being cut apart with galling ease in the 12th minute.Timothy Castagne got to the byline and, when Ashley Williams failed to clear his low cross, Cristante was left with a simple finish.

Kevin Mirallas benefited from some similarly generous Atalanta defending as the half hour approached but the angle was against him as he shot too close to goalkeeper Etrit Berisha. The same could not be said for Sandro, who hacked wildly over on the follow-up.

Andrea Masiello made a magnificent headed block on the goalline in the 38th minute to deny Everton youngster Tom Davies an equaliser but the centre-back was limping heavily by first-half stoppage time – his condition compromising a clearance than almost allowed Mirallas to level matters.

Williams sparked an on-field melee in Everton's last Europa League home game against Lyon and another inauspicious outing for the Wales defender took a further wrong turn early in the second period.Cristante stole clear of Williams, who responded with a desperate lunge that left referee Jakob Kehlet with little option other than to point to the spot.

But Joel Robles came to Everton's aid, springing to his right to keep out a poor penalty from Gomez, who failed to convert the rebound.Williams kept his goalkeeper busy by glancing a left-wing corner towards his own goal moments later. Joel saved brilliantly once more and Jonjoe Kenny denied Cristante on the line.

Everton's other centre-back Michael Keane was not having a much more enjoyable evening and crumpled to the floor when confronted shoulder-to-shoulder by Hans Hateboer, although the Atalanta wing-back's resulting shot was deflected behind.

The visitors' earlier corner routine paid dividends in the 64th minute when Gomez again threatened the near post from the left and Cristante glanced his seventh of the season into the net.Atalanta's boisterous travelling support proceeded to shake the Bullens Road stand with prolonged celebrations.

Their din was only briefly punctuated by Sandro arrowing a brilliant finish across Berisha into the bottom corner.

That Everton briefly threatened to complete a comeback felt like a trick of the mind as Cornelius made merry in the closing minutes, cutting in to finish sharply before punishing more dismal set-piece defending after fellow sub Gosens had spectacularly sapped any remaining resistance.

Cologne 1 Arsenal 0: Gunners secure top spot despite defeat

    46A4852D00000578-5112261-image-a-13_1511471840591.jpg

Arsenal secured top spot in Europa League Group H despite losing 1-0 at Cologne on Thursday, with the Germans keeping their chances of qualification alive as a result.

Arsene Wenger's men knew that a point would guarantee them finishing top of the group, but they were ultimately able to do so even with such a poor result against the side bottom of the Bundesliga, with BATE and Red Star Belgrade drawing 0-0 in the other match.

Arsenal dominated the first half and played some slick football as they created a significant number of chances, but they were frustrated by a combination of wayward finishing, Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn and the post. The match was initially similarly one-sided after half-time, but Arsenal found Cologne harder to break down.

And Cologne looked more willing to push men forward, an approach which then resulted in Sehrou Guirassy winning and converting a penalty just after the hour mark.

Unsurprisingly Arsenal poured men forward towards the end as they sought to make absolutely sure of their position as group winners and, although they failed to level, it did not matter as the result in Belarus did them a favour.

Proceedings were end-to-end early on and the home side went close to taking the lead - albeit fortuitously - in the sixth minute, as Jhon Cordoba's attempted cross needed to be tipped around the post by David Ospina.

Arsenal soon began to exert some control and Francis Coquelin sent a rasping 25-yard drive agonisingly past the left-hand post with 14 minutes on the clock.Their next chance fell to Jack Wilshere shortly after, with the midfielder heading a Danny Welbeck cross straight into the arms of the grateful Timo Horn.

Coquelin went close for a second time with just over half-an-hour played, as the Frenchman latched on to Welbeck's pass into the left side of the area and smashed an effort on to the post. And Welbeck had an opportunity of his own a few minutes later, bending a fine right-footed effort just past the right-hand post from the left side of the box.

Arsenal looked no less in control at the start of the second period and almost crafted a chance at the end of a brilliant move, as Wilshere found Olivier Giroud and raced on to a return pass into the box, only for Jorge Mere to make a vital last-ditch tackle.

But Cologne did start to offer a little more as the hour-mark approached and they took the lead in the 62nd minute.

Guirassy played a clever one-two with Salih Ozcan on the edge of the area and darted into the box, before Mathieu Debuchy nudged him to the ground, allowing the 21-year-old to convert the resulting penalty. Giroud nearly levelled 13 minutes from time when released into the box by Wilshere, but Timo Horn rushed out to put him off, clattering team-mate Jannes Horn in the process.

Arsenal put Cologne under significant pressure during the latter stages with substitute Eddie Nketiah and Wilshere wasting great chances, but the home side – who still have not won a league game this term – held on to a famous win which puts them level on six points with Red Star, whom they face away from home in their final group outing.

Ronaldo will step up when needed for Madrid – Alonso

Xabi Alonso believes Cristiano Ronaldo will deliver when Real Madrid need him and the former midfielder feels the LaLiga title race is not yet over.Ronaldo has managed just one league goal in eight matches this season, with Madrid slipping 10 points behind rivals and leaders Barcelona.

Former Madrid and Spain midfielder Alonso backed the Portugal international despite his below-par campaign so far, saying Ronaldo would step up when required."I have no doubt that in the crucial moments of the season, Ronaldo will be there," Alonso said.

"He was amazing at the end of last season and when the team needed him he was decisive."He's as competitive and as motivated to be the best as he has always been."

Ronaldo and Madrid's struggles come as Barca cruise at the top with 11 wins from 12 league games, while scoring 33 goals and conceding just four.Alonso, who won a LaLiga and Champions League crown with Madrid, said Zinedine Zidane's men still had an opportunity."There's much time left for LaLiga to end and the standings can change really fast," he said.

"Right now, it's true that the distance between Barca and Real Madrid is big but Barca has difficult games ahead."They have to come to [the Santiago] Bernabeu and everything can change really fast."We have to stay positive, the team is really good and everything can happen."

Brazil star Robinho sentenced to nine years in prison for sexual assault

A court in Milan has sentenced Brazil international Robinho to nine years in prison for a group sexual assault, according to Italian state news agency ANSA.

The former AC Milan and Manchester City forward has been convicted of being one of six people involved in the assault of a 22-year-old woman at a Milanese nightclub on January 22, 2013.

Robinho played for Milan between 2010 and 2015. He is currently with Atletico Mineiro and made his last appearance for the national team against Colombia in January. As Robinho is a Brazilian national currently residing in his home country, however, he is highly unlikely to face jail time for his offences.

According to local legislation no Brazilian citizen can be extradited to another country under request to face criminal charges, although that will not apply should he leave his home nation and is detained elsewhere.

Robinho's current club, Atletico Mineiro, declined to comment on the sentence, stating they would only speak through the team's lawyers if necessary. The star, meanwhile, issued a statement on Instagram denying his involvement.

"With regards to the news involving the forward Robinho, regarding something that happened some years ago, we would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the allegation, affirming that he was not involved in the incident," the statement read. "Every legal measure is being taken about this first ruling."Robinho, 33, started his career with Santos, and as a teenager helped the Peixe to their first Serie A title for 20 years.

That sparkling form led him to Real Madrid, where he starred for three seasons before earning a lucrative move to Manchester City in 2008. A lack of discipline, however, began to dog Robinho, and he was soon returning to Santos before a spell in Italy where the assault took place.

After a short stint at China Robinho moved to Belo Horizonte, where he has become a key part of Atletico's first team over the past two seasons alongside fellow City old boy Jo.

Man Utd offered hope as agent admits it 'feels like the end' for Griezmann at Atletico

Antoine Griezmann could soon be on the move, with his former agent admitting that it “feels like the end” for the Manchester United target at Atletico Madrid.

The France international forward appeared to be edging towards the exits over the summer, as the Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for his services .Griezmann was, however, to commit to Atletico as they served a transfer ban, with a new contract signed in the Spanish capital.

The 26-year-old has endured a dip in form since then, though, and a man who helped to put him on the path to stardom has suggested that a much-discussed transfer now appears to be on the cards.Eric Olhat told French publication L’Equipe : “It’s a complicated situation for him but it feels like the end.

“I know him very well and we are still close, but to see him play at the level he has for much of this season means something is not right.“Ok, he can change his mind of course and in football nothing is certain, but this feels like the end of his chapter with Atleti.”

Griezmann was back among the goals in his latest outing, as Atletico saw off Roma 2-0 in the Champions League. That effort was, however, his first in eight outings for the La Liga giants.

At the height of his struggles, Griezmann was subjected to jeers by the Atleti support – with whistles raining down on him during a derby clash with Real Madrid.

Olhat believes that treatment could contribute to a departure, with a proven frontman having little to prove at the highest level. He added: “He is very emotional, I am sure he took this poorly. He is a player who gives his all and doesn't try to cheat anyone even if he has a bad day.“The attitude of the fans will have hurt him, even if he says otherwise.”

Chelsea's best chance of success is Champions League, claims Lampard

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea will have a better chance of success in the Champions League than Premier League due to Manchester City's immense start to the season.Pep Guardiola's City have dropped just two points in their 12 league matches this season and have been almost unstoppable in attack, scoring 40 times.

That run of form has seen them open an eight-point gap to Manchester United at the top of the table, with defending champions Chelsea trailing Jose Mourinho's side by a further point.

Chelsea have managed to progress through their Champions League group, however, with the 3-0 defeat at Roma the only major blemish and they are still on track to finish top after Wednesday's 4-0 win over Qarabag. And Lampard suspects that Chelsea, who face Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday, are probably more capable of getting close to European success this term than they are domestically.

Speaking thanks to Chelsea club partners Yokohama Tyres, Lampard said: "This year is going to be difficult, I think, because Manchester City started so well."The reality is that City have opened up the league and I think the chance for Chelsea will be in the Champions League.

"I think they will be competitive and Chelsea have to be savage to be in the top four at the end of the year, and keep playing Champions League football."

Lampard was not about to label City unbeatable or one of the greatest Premier League sides ever, though, insisting it is still a little premature for any of those grand declarations. "I think is too early to say," he added. "If they carry on during the season the way they are playing, then of course they are going to put themselves in that bracket.

"There's potential, but it's so early in the season and there are so many things to be seen."There are so many great teams [who have played] in the Premier League, not just Mourinho's Chelsea or Alex Ferguson's United."They were very strong, so they [City] have to prove more [if they are to be classed as the best ever]."

Mata open to new Man Utd contract as he seeks to emulate Giggs

Juan Mata would be open to signing a new contract at Manchester United as he wants to compete at the highest level until he is 40.The Spain international is currently tied to the Red Devils until the summer of 2018, although there is a 12-month extension option in that agreement.

United are likely to trigger that clause, but fresh terms could also be tabled to keep the 29-year-old at Old Trafford.Mata admits he is prepared to open negotiations, with there a desire on his part to emulate the achievements of club legend Ryan Giggs.

He told ESPN FC when pressed on whether he could pen a new deal: “Why not? I'm 29 and, hopefully, I can play football for some more years.“It would be great to play until I'm 40 like Ryan Giggs. But that's still a bit far, still 11 years.

“I'm happy here. The club is massive, the support we have is massive. I've been settled down in the city since year one. Now it's my fourth year in Manchester.“You never know what can happen in football and in life. But my feeling now is that I'm happy here and I wouldn't have any problem continuing here for more time.”

While fully focused on his playing career for now, and the foreseeable future, Mata has also admitted that he intends to stay in football when the time comes to hang up his boots.

As a World Cup and European Championship winner, and a man who has graced the books at Valencia, Chelsea and United, he has plenty of knowledge to pass on in a coaching or managerial capacity.

Mata added on the path he plans to tread: “If you had asked me a few years ago whether I wanted to be a manager, I would say no.“I think every footballer, after 20 years playing football, the first thing that comes to your mind is to relax. One, two years gap and do other things in life and enjoy other hobbies you might have.

“Right now, with years of understanding the game better, understand more the tactical approach or communicate with team-mates, how to motivate them, I wouldn't say no to becoming a manager but I don't know.”

Happy Sanchez could win the Premier League for Arsenal - Lauren

Arsenal's ability to keep Alexis Sanchez happy could be the difference between them winning the Premier League or failing yet again, former Gunners defender Lauren claims.Sanchez has cut an increasingly frustrated figure at the Emirates Stadium over the past year and has allowed his contract to run into its final season.

A deadline-day move to Manchester City fell through in August, reportedly to the Chile international's dismay, and failure to qualify for the World Cup has done little to lift Sanchez's mood. The attacker looked revived somewhat on Saturday, scoring in the Gunners' impressive 2-0 win over north London rivals Tottenham.

And Lauren, a champion with Arsenal's 'Invincibles' side of 2003-04, says Arsene Wenger could taste silverware again if he can manage Sanchez's mood.

"At least we [have to] keep Alexis Sanchez happy," Lauren told Omnisport. "I don't think he will be the same player as last year, scoring a lot of goals, because if a player said to you at the beginning or the end the season, he wants to leave...

"Either you maintain, keeping him happy, or find issues that make him happy and able to perform the same way as last year, otherwise it will be difficult to maintain the same level. "The people that are working with Alexis on a daily basis at the club must know about it, but he is a player that, definitely, to be able to win the Premier League, you need to have him in the squad. But you have to make him happy."

After Arsenal's derby win, Wenger spoke of his belief that Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, also approaching the end of his deal, want to remain at the club, but City have been linked with a January raid for the Chile star, while Ozil has also been tipped to move.

Carrick reveals heart procedure as he works on Man Utd return

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has revealed he underwent a procedure to resolve an "irregular heart rhythm" after feeling unwell during September's EFL Cup tie against Burton Albion. The 4-1 win at Old Trafford remains Carrick's only appearance for Jose Mourinho's team this season and his absence was initially attributed to a calf injury.

Reports emerged last month that Carrick had been suffering from a mystery illness and the 36-year-old issued a statement via Twitter on Friday to offer clarification over the reason for his absence."I just want to clear up my situation as I've had a few people asking if I'm okay and why I haven't been fit over the last couple of months," Carrick said."After feeling strange during the second half of the Burton game in September I underwent a series of tests.

"It turned out to be due to an irregular heart rhythm which has been fully investigated and I had a procedure called a cardiac ablation."

Carrick went on to offer assurances that he is back in full training with United and targeting a return to action in the near future. He said: "I had to build up training steadily whilst being monitored closely but I feel fine now. I would like to reassure everyone that I'm healthy and back training hard with the team.

"I'm building up my fitness and aiming to be back in contention for selection soon. Thanks for your support."A cardiac ablation is a procedure that breaks abnormal circuits in the heart and uses either heat or freezing to destroy areas of the muscle that trigger arrhythmias.

Carrick's absence has been keenly felt by Mourinho over recent months, with fellow central midfielders Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini having only recently returned from their own spells on the sidelines.

Conte: Courtois contract renewal out of my hands

Antonio Conte admits he has no power to keep Thibaut Courtois, who has made no progress over a contract renewal at Chelsea, but he thinks that the Blues goalkeeper is destined for greatness.

Courtois has just a year and a half left on his contract at Chelsea and recently said that he will halt any renewal discussions until the summer. He is understood to have asked to double his wages from around £100,000-a-week to £200,000-a-week, matching the earnings of Manchester United's goalkeeper David De Gea.

Chelsea's director Marina Graniskovaia has the final say on whether the Blues will give Courtois what he wants during contract negotiations but the goalkeeper has leverage in the situation with Real Madrid interested in signing him. And Conte thinks this is how it should be, as he explained his role in the situation around Courtois' contract.

"I must be honest I think this question is for the club not for me," Conte said when asked about renewing Courtois's contract. "I like to give my opinion about technical decisions but it is also important for the club to face this issue, this contract with Courtois.

"I can tell you he is one of the best, maybe he is the best goalkeeper in the world and he is a very important player for Chelsea but the renewal of contract is a task for the club. I repeat, for me every single player is important and I like to work with these players but as you know very well everyone can take a different decision.

"I like to work with these players but I want that they are very happy to stay at Chelsea. I think that Thibaut didn't need my opinion [to decide to stay at Chelsea when I joined the club]. He knows very well what are my thoughts about him. I consider him one of the best."For sure, he will be the best in the world, maybe he is now the best but for sure the future is for this goalkeeper. He knows my opinion and my thoughts about him."

Chelsea got back from Baku after playing in the Champions League against Qarabag just before five in the morning. Some of Chelsea's first team players didn't get to sleep until 6 a.m. and Conte's side have had a day less to prepare for the Liverpool game than Jurgen Klopp's men.

However, Conte did manage to rest a number of key players including Alvaro Morata, who only saw limited action after coming off the bench for Eden Hazard in the 65th minute with the game already won. Conte is likely to recall Morata for the match on Saturday and he responded to questions asking him to compare the forward's impact with Liverpool's star signing Mohamed Salah.

"[Mohamed] Salah start was important because he is scoring a lot of goals and makes a lot of assist during the game," Conte said of the former Chelsea player who now lines up at Anfield. "His start was very positive but the most important thing for Alvaro [Morata] was the same.

"To my team and for me it was very important for Alvaro to have an impressive start in this league. He is an important player for us. For me the striker is very important to have a point of reference to do what I want is very important."In our system, the striker is a figure very important for us and for this reason he is always involved in our chances. Sometimes he scores, sometimes he makes an assist for his team-mate.

"To play in this league for a striker is not simple because this league is very tough and also it is very different compared with the previous leagues that he played in, Italy and Spain. He showed great commitment and to be a clever person to adapt himself to this league."

Chelsea are currently nine points off the Premier League leaders Manchester City and a defeat in Liverpool might seriously harm the Blues' hopes of retaining their league title.

Conte admits that it is a difficult task to compete with Pep Guardiola's side, who are not only winning but beating teams comfortably in the Premier League. The Chelsea boss thinks City's run compares to his own side's run of last season.

"I remember in last season also the other coaches said 'yes, we need to win but if they [Chelsea] continue to win it will be impossible to catch up with them', but at the same time we have to look at ourselves.

"[We need to] try to improve every game, improve the new players, try to build something important for the present but also for the future. We are trying to build something important for this club, we changed a lot of players and we are trying to fight for every competition
"If I don't remember badly, we start this season and for all the people the contenders for the title were only two teams, the two Manchester clubs.Sometimes people forget this forecast but I think in this league there are six top teams and every team has to try and fight until the end for the title.

"At the same time every season there are the favourites and a table of favourites but last season we changed this table and, for sure, Liverpool are a really good team and has the potential to fight for the title. And I am sure Liverpool want to stay and fight until the end for the title.

"If Manchester City continues this way it will be very difficult to arrive at the end of the season and fight for the title. If they continue in this way it will be impossible to fight for the title."

Mohamed Salah is a great player, acknowledges Coutinho

Philippe Coutinho has labelled Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah as a great player. While Coutinho tried to force his way out of Anfield to join Spanish giants Barcelona, the Egypt international arrived in a club record deal.

And he has settled seamlessly in Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring an impressive 14 goals in 19 appearances across all competitions - a feat that has drawn applause from his Brazilian teammate who fancies a productive partnership with him.

"He's a great player,” Coutinho told Sky Sports."Everyone - us and the fans - have been really impressed with the way he's settled in here, the way he's adapted to the team."He's a very quick player and he's always trying to move so that he can get into empty space and that makes it easier for whoever has the ball.

"Everything is fully deserved, he's a great bloke, he always trains hard and he's there when we need him."I hope to be able to make the best of my chance to play with him and to be able to help the team."

Coutinho will hope Salah continues his amazing form that has seen him net nine top-flight goals when the 25-year-old face his former team Chelsea in Saturday’s English Premier League clash.

Madrid target Icardi could stay at Inter forever, says Spalletti

Luciano Spalletti is hopeful Mauro Icardi will never leave Inter, despite reported interest from Real Madrid.Icardi has been in sparkling form again this season, scoring 13 goals in as many Serie A games as the Nerazzurri lie second in Serie A heading into Saturday's away clash with Cagliari.

That scoring streak has unsurprisingly seen the 24-year-old linked with a big-money move to European champions Madrid, but Spalletti has confidence his captain is happy at San Siro.

When rumours of Madrid's interest were put to Spalletti in his pre-match news conference, the Inter boss replied: "Who does not want Icardi?"I love him at Inter and when I talk to him I can sense that the city, his team-mates, the club, the fans are all things to which he is strongly attached."I am convinced he can stay at Inter forever."

Inter are two points behind Napoli at the top of the table and two ahead of champions Juventus, with Spalletti stressing the importance of continued hard work if his players are to ensure they remain in the title race."For now there is not [a gap to the top teams] anymore, but we have to carry on what we have done," he said.

"Every match, we have to start from scratch and put our quality on the field. We must play without respite - that is our motto."

Zidane will not blame injuries for Real Madrid's La Liga gap to Barcelona

Zinedine Zidane is refusing to blame injuries for Real Madrid falling 10 points behind Barcelona at the summit of La Liga. Gareth Bale has missed almost two months with calf and adductor injuries, while Keylor Navas and Mateo Kovacic have both endured spells on the sidelines in recent months.

Sergio Ramos could join all three in missing Saturday's clash with Malaga after suffering a broken nose in last weekend's draw with Atletico Madrid and the club confirmed on Friday that midfielder Marco Asensio had sustained an obturator injury.

Zidane, though, admits that there are a number of factors behind his side's struggles this season and the gap between themselves and Ernesto Valverde's side cannot solely be attributed to a lengthy injury list.

"I am not going to look for excuses," he said."The 10 points are not due to injuries – that can happen in football."It is a bit of everything and I am responsible for that and trying to get those points back.

"I'm convinced we can do that, but we don't need excuses. What's happened is behind us and we need to keep moving forward now."Madrid can cut the gap to Barca to seven points with a win over 18th-placed Malaga, with the Catalan side not facing second-placed Valencia until Sunday. "Malaga's position in the table is not deserved," added Zidane. "They have been playing well recently, won two of their last three games.

"All matches now are decisive for us. We are playing first, and then we will see what happens on Sunday. One of the teams must drop points. I did not expect to be in this situation."

Salah has nothing to prove in Chelsea reunion, says Klopp

Mohamed Salah is not treating Saturday's Premier League meeting with Chelsea as an opportunity to prove his former club wrong, says Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool host the champions at Anfield, with Salah hoping to continue the stellar form that has yielded nine goals and two assists from 12 league outings this season.

The Egypt international struggled for regular playing time during his stay at Stamford Bridge, during which he was loaned to Fiorentina and Roma before completing a permanent switch to the Italian capital. After arriving at Liverpool from Roma in the off-season, Salah's impressive performances have earned the praise of Eden Hazard, who believes his former team-mate deserved more chances at Chelsea.

Klopp, meanwhile, insists Salah's toils in west London were only to be expected of an inexperienced player trying to force his way into a settled side.

"Disappointing time? I really can't get that, he was very young in a strong team, that happens very often," said Klopp."Another player in a similar situation is Kevin De Bruyne. Nobody is to blame for that.

"Mo took the next chance. He improved a lot, especially physically, he was always a very good player."I don't think he has to prove something, I don't think he sees it like that. It's a completely normal situation."If he would have played better at Chelsea, we would not have him probably so I'm happy about this situation."

'Who is more ambitious than us?' - Mourinho defends Man Utd style of play

Jose Mourinho has defended Manchester United's style of play while insisting he is not paying too much attention to the gap to Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's City lead rivals United by eight points, with the Etihad Stadium outfit also receiving plaudits for a free-flowing approach that has seen them net 40 times in 12 league games this term.

However, Mourinho disputed the suggestion that any side plays with more ambition than his own as United prepare for the visit of Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday."[To have] more ambition than we have at home is quite difficult," said the United boss. "I don't know who is more ambitious than us.

"We played against Newcastle with [Paul] Pogba, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial, [Juan] Mata, [Romelu] Lukaku; the full-backs are not full-backs, [Antonio] Valencia and [Ashley] Young are wingers not full-backs."So I don't know what you want."

With the Brighton game followed in quick succession by clashes with Watford and Arsenal, United have an opportunity to close in on City, who they face on December 10 – but that is not at the forefront of Mourinho's mind.

"We cannot think about the gap," he added. "We cannot think about the gap to City, to the fifth position. We just have to focus on ourselves and in matches.

"It's probably the first time this season with three Premier League matches in one week, with a couple of days in between matches, but I think every team is prepared for that, even when I look to teams with other ambitions I see fantastic squads so I think the teams are going to cope with the week.

"Obviously, for us, Brighton, Watford, Arsenal is a very important week. But let's focus on Brighton, ninth in the table, good team, difficult to beat, don't concede many goals, have a mix of physicality, aggression, quality, creativity. I think Chris Houghton is doing a great job.

"We must focus on this one. I know we have a good record at home and are strong at home, but the opponent is going to be difficult for us."

:(Mourinho fears Fellaini will leave for free in 2018

Jose Mourinho has expressed his concern that Marouane Fellaini could leave the club for nothing in summer 2018.The Belgian's contract expires next summer, with Goal having previously revealed that he has turned down an offer of new terms to remain at Old Trafford.

As revealed by Goal, Fellaini's agent had approached Serie A champions Juventus over a possible more for the player, although the Italian giants are not interested in signing him.

And Mourinho insists that the matter is out of his hands now and that it is up to the board to negotiate with the former Everton midfielder over a new deal.He told reporters: "Yeah, I am [concerned Fellaini could leave]. It is a discussion between the player and the board.

"Discussions are under [the board's] control. So I just wait, wishing that they will have an understanding but it's out of my control."Fellaini has featured in 11 games in all competitions for United in the 2017-18 campaign and has emerged as a key player under Mourinho's management.

The Portuguese has previously expressed his admiration for the Belgian, commenting that he feels "weaker" without the midfielder in his team."He's an important player for me - a lot more important than you can imagine," he said back in September.

"I feel weaker without Fellaini in my squad, doesn't matter if it's on the pitch or on the bench. If his conditions are improved, he will be selected, I need him."
