Tottenham 1 West Brom 1: Kane grabs a point as Spurs lose more ground

    46AFA95000000578-5116981-image-a-18_1511629321688.jpg

Harry Kane scored his ninth Premier League goal of the season but Tottenham's dwindling title hopes were dealt another blow as managerless West Brom left Wembley with a 1-1 draw.Salomon Rondon gave Albion and their unheralded caretaker manager Gary Megson an early advantage five days on from Tony Pulis' sacking.

The visitors looked set for a first league victory since August until their massed defensive ranks were punctured by a typically expert piece of movement and poaching from Kane in the 74th minute.

A winner proved elusive and Mauricio Pochettino – who once again raised eyebrows pre-match by omitting Danny Rose from Tottenham's matchday squad – has presided over a solitary league victory in his past four attempts.

Spurs fall five points behind second-placed Manchester United, while leaders Manchester City will be 13 points better off if they can beat Huddersfield Town on Sunday.

A dispiriting week meant West Brom – who edged a point clear of the relegation zone - emerged at Wembley with few expectations but they stunned the majority of those inside the national stadium after four minutes.

Dele Alli was caught napping in midfield by fellow England international Jake Livermore, who fed Rondon to outmuscle Davinson Sanchez and smuggle a finish beyond a static Hugo Lloris and into the bottom left corner.

Tottenham's response lacked fluency or purpose, with Kane belatedly involved in the 27th minute when he turned Ahmed Hegazi and scuffed wide from the edge of the area.

Ben Foster pushed to safety after Son Heung-min's drive took an awkward bounce in front of him and the West Brom goalkeeper held on to Eric Dier's header from Kieran Trippier's outswinging corner.

Son established himself as Spurs' most threatening attacker during the closing moments of the first half – flashing a teasing low cross just beyond Kane before having a shot deflected on to the roof of the net in stoppage time.Kane shot goalwards from outside the box shortly after the restart but was off balance, making Foster's task easier than it might have been.

West Brom retained an occasional threat on the break and Rondon cut in from the right in the 55th minute to lash a powerful strike past the far post.Spurs' play remained ragged and Dier was a symbol of their frustrations before the hour when he was booked for persistent dissent.

Alli flung himself in at the back post in vain when Trippier's volley into the turf skidded across goal in the 68th minute.Six minutes later, Alli turned provider and left the poaching to Kane, who expertly guided his low cross home to lift the Spurs faithful out of their bubbling frustration.

The England striker was suddenly leading Tottenham's charge and tumbled on the edge of the area under a desperate Livermore challenge. Christian Eriksen – unusually ineffective for the hosts – fired the resulting free-kick into the wall.

Kane was crowded out by West Brom defenders as he tried to head in from a Trippier cross and, despite the rousing win over European champions Real Madrid at the start of this month, Wembley still does not quite feel like home for Tottenham.

Albion substitute Hal Robson-Kanu almost supplied a sting in the tail during stoppage time when he blasted a volley at Lloris before tearing down the right flank and seeing Rondon touch his dangerous delivery wide.

'Man City can win everything' - De Bruyne confident of conquering all fronts

Kevin De Bruyne sees no reason why Manchester City cannot complete a clean sweep of trophies this season as Pep Guardiola's side continue to swat aside any and all opposition.

City head into Sunday's visit to Huddersfield Town on the back of 16 wins from 17 across all competitions – a sequence interrupted only by an EFL Cup draw and subsequent penalty shoot-out triumph over Wolves.

De Bruyne has been in sensational form and already looks a strong bet to scoop various individual honours at the end of the campaign.

But it is collective glory that interests the Belgium international, whose four goals and nine assists have inspired City to an eight-point lead atop the Premier League, five wins from five in the Champions League to secure qualification to the knockout stages, and a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

"I know I can't win by myself, I can play very good, like I did another season, but I'd prefer even to play less [well] and in the end have some titles," De Bruyne told The Times.

"Since I've been here we've just won a League Cup. It's time to win something major. My feeling is we can win everything."That's not to say we're going to win everything. It's so hard to do everything, the four competitions."

Since Chelsea's 2012 triumph, no Premier League side has reached the final of the Champions League, but the quintet of English clubs look set to challenge strongly this time around with City, Tottenham and Chelsea already assured of featuring in the knockouts while Manchester United and Liverpool are well placed to join them. "Against Monaco [in the Champions League last season], we had one bad half and it's done. But Premier League teams are doing much better in the Champions League than the last years," added De Bruyne.

"At the beginning of the season I said to my friends it will be a very good year for all the Premier League teams."

'This is my home' - Messi's 'dream' is to end career at Barcelona

Lionel Messi confirmed his desire to remain a one-club player with Barcelona after extending his stay at the Catalan giants to 2021.The Argentina legend ended a long-running saga by putting pen to paper on a new contract on Saturday, with the deal containing a €700 million buyout clause.

Messi had been linked with a potential move to Manchester City, while he has previously expressed an interest to finish his career in his homeland.

But the four-time Champions League winner, who will be 34 when his latest contract expires, said he was "very happy" to remain with the club he joined as a 13-year-old.

"For a long time we have been waiting to do the signature and today it was done," Messi told Barca TV.
"I am pleased to still be connected to the club. As I always said, this is my home.
"I always wanted to end my career here. My dream was to end my career with Barcelona and we are on track."

Messi and his Barca team-mates have the chance to go seven points clear in LaLiga when they visit Valencia in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.

Zidane certain Real Madrid will get better after Ronaldo snatches nervy win

Zinedine Zidane has confidence Real Madrid will continue to improve after grabbing an entertaining 3-2 victory over struggling Malaga in La Liga.

A thrilling encounter at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday saw the champions lose the lead twice before ultimately prevailing when Cristiano Ronaldo scored the rebound from his own missed penalty 14 minutes from time.

Madrid's triumph was far from convincing, but Zidane feels they are on the right track after winning three and drawing one of their last four matches across all competitions.

It was a timely result with Madrid's La Liga title rivals Valencia and Barcelona set to do battle at Mestalla on Sunday and Zidane has his sights set on a consistent run of form."In this game we added three points, but for sure we will make things better," he said after a match in which Karim Benzema and Casemiro netted headers.

"What I would like to do now is make three, four, five, six, seven good games in a row, but we are on schedule. "We started the game well and scored the first goal quickly, which is important. But everything changed and the second half was very difficult.

"When teams come here, they play for their lives but we like to play here at home."We have to be positive because we have won three points. We are happy with the result even though there were other things that were not as we wanted."

Ronaldo's winner was only his second goal from nine league matches this season and came after he had endured another frustrating afternoon in front of goal, failing to convert multiple opportunities.
Zidane said: "He had chances but you also have to see the goalkeeper [Roberto]. Sometimes there is a goalkeeper."I remember what the goalkeeper did when we played against Betis and it was the same in this match. In the end Karim scored, Cristiano scored and we will as always – me first of all – be positive."

Madrid are back in action against Fuenlabrada in the Copa del Rey on Tuesday before a testing trip to play Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.

Carrick will have option to coach at United - Mourinho

Michael Carrick will have the option to join Manchester United's coaching staff when he decides to retire from playing, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

The 36-year-old has made just one appearance for United this season, lining up in midfield for the 4-1 Carabao Cup victory over Burton Albion at Old Trafford in September.

Since then, he has undergone a procedure to resolve an irregular heart rhythm and Mourinho said the club is working with the former England midfielder to ensure he is "in a comfortable situation".

"Michael, as a person, is more important than Michael as a player," Mourinho told the club's official website after United's 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion."We gave him the time to relax, to recover, to feel confident, to make the decision [when he] wants to play, [when he] wants to stop."He knows that my coaching staff has the chair for him if he wants. When he wants the chair, it is there in the office for him.

"I want that, the board wants that and the owner wants that. So Michael is in a comfortable situation. His future will be with us."Carrick moved to Old Trafford from Tottenham in June 2006 and has made more than 300 Premier League appearances for the club.

He has lifted five league titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League trophy among a glut of honours, but Mourinho indicated the Wallsend-born player is not yet ready to hang up his boots.

"He wants to be a player until the end of the season and now he feels confident to be back and now he is training back with us," said Mourinho."So [he is] one more option for us, we need players and Michael wants to play so I am happy with that."

Cagliari 1 Inter 3: Icardi scores brace to send Nerazzurri top

    46B14EE500000578-0-image-a-41_1511657810858.jpg

Inter have gone top of Serie A as two goals from Mauro Icardi and a Marcelo Brozovic strike helped them to a 3-1 win over Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena. It might only be a fleeting stop at the summit, however, as dethroned Napoli will have the chance to reclaim top spot when they travel to Udinese on Sunday.

The visitors were comfortably second best for the opening period, but the prolific Icardi scored his 14th league goal of the season from close range just before the half hour to give them an undeserved lead.

Matias Vecino was withdrawn through injury after 52 minutes, but just three minutes later his replacement Brozovic sent a fine strike into the bottom corner to double Inter's lead.Leonardo Pavoletti cushioned home a fine volley in the 71st minute to give the hosts hope of securing an unlikely draw.

But Icardi scored his second of the game in the 83rd minute to quash any chances of a dramatic comeback and maintain the Nerazzurri's unbeaten start to the season.

Cagliari started at a blistering pace and should have been ahead inside the opening five minutes. Captain Joao Pedro did brilliantly to pull down a cross inside the penalty area, but after spinning away from his marker he was only able to hook his close-range effort straight at Samir Handanovic.

The Slovenian goalkeeper was called into action again 10 minutes later, this time producing a miraculous point-blank save at the back post to keep out Pavoletti's volley from a deep cross. The hosts continued to look menacing going forward, but Inter took the lead entirely against the run of play in the 29th minute.

Antonio Candreva's whipped cross from the right was met by Ivan Perisic at the back post and the stretching Croatian was able to hook the ball across goal for Icardi to stab home from six yards.

He could – and perhaps should – have scored a second moments later, but he just failed to make enough contact with another teasing cross from the right, which had fizzed past Cagliari goalkeeper Rafael.Davide Santon then flashed a long-range shot past the post as Inter finished the half in dominant mood.

Cagliari started the second period with the same verve that had characterised their display in the opening half hour, with Nicolo Barella's drive from distance deflected just past Handanovic's post.

Inter thought they had put the game to bed in the 55th minute when Brozovic met Candreva's pull back to lash home from just inside the penalty area for his third league goal of the season. The hosts gave themselves a lifeline with 20 minutes remaining as Pavoletti made up for his first-half miss with a superbly taken volley from Paolo Farago's cross that left Handanovic with no chance.

An 11th win out of 14 league games was sealed with seven minutes remaining, though, as Icardi took full advantage of some insipid goalkeeping from Rafael to thrash home from close range.

Willian defends Liverpool equaliser: 'It was a shot, no doubt!'

Chelsea attacker Willian laughingly insisted his equaliser against Liverpool was a shot after he salvaged a point for his team at Anfield on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead in the 65th minute, but Willian ensured Antonio Conte's men left with a 1-1 draw. The Brazilian appeared to be aiming a cross to the back post, only for the ball to loop over Simon Mignolet and into the net.

Asked about his goal by Chelsea TV , a laughing Willian said: "For sure, it was a shot, no doubt."Again completing his answer with a laugh, the 29-year-old added: "Some people ask, 'You want to cross or you want to shoot?' I said, 'Shoot, of course. Too much quality'."

The result kept Chelsea in third in the Premier League, but they are eight points behind leaders Manchester City, who visit Huddersfield Town on Sunday. Willian was delighted to find the back of the net for Chelsea, saying: "I'm happy to score this beautiful goal. In this kind of game, it's important to score goals."Now we have to carry on and stick together in this moment because we want to win every game."

Monaco 1 Paris Saint-Germain 2: Cavani & Neymar bail out wayward Mbappe

    46B893D100000578-5119229-image-a-7_1511731669611.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain pulled further clear in the Ligue 1 title race with an ominous 2-1 win over Monaco, despite Kylian Mbappe's difficulties on his return to Stade Louis II.

Edinson Cavani and Neymar scored either side of half-time as Unai Emery's men rocketed nine points clear at the top.Mbappe - whistled throughout by the home fans - was in a forgiving mood, the teenager incredibly wasting four clear-cut chances before he inadvertently deflected in a late consolation for the hosts.

Cavani was less generous in the first half as he spared his team-mate's blushes by stabbing in the opener inside 20 minutes.Mbappe's ongoing profligacy plagued PSG after the restart but it ultimately proved inconsequential to the result, which Neymar sealed by winning and scoring a penalty.

Monaco, who for much of the match looked incapable of mounting a fightback, did gain hope when Joao Moutinho's free-kick deflected off Mbappe to cut the deficit, but it was not enough to prevent the champions from falling further off the pace.

Mbappe was sprightly on his return to the principality, but his first chance came and went early on as he raced onto Neymar's pass and touched the ball past the onrushing Danijel Subasic, only to inexplicably finish wide of a vacant net from a manageable angle.

A second clear-cut chance for an early opener escaped PSG in similarly agonising fashion. Cavani cleverly helped Mbappe's byline cut-back to the far post, where a stretching Julian Draxler could only steer it the wrong side of the upright.
But the visitors only had to wait until the 19th minute to make their dominance count.

Adrien Rabiot fed a simple pass into Draxler's feet and the German did likewise for an unmarked Cavani, who poked high into the roof of the net at close range.Monaco had Subasic preventing greater damage at the end of a one-sided first half after the goalkeeper reacted sharply to Draxler's low drive.

PSG started the second half in much the same manner as they began the first, Neymar first cracking the right-hand post before Mbappe tried to be too cute in a one-on-one.

But any frustration evaporated even quicker this time around as the Brazilian dispatched a 52nd-minute spot-kick into the bottom-left corner, having been bundled over in the area by Almamy Toure. However, even the two-goal buffer could not ease Mbappe's nerves around goal.

The France star blazed another fine chance over the bar and could have had four when he poked wide with a final one-on-one.And the jitters seemed to spread, Cavani nodding wide of a gaping target shortly after Jemerson had turned a low cross against his own post.

Mbappe became even more central to Emery's irritation when Moutinho's free-kick flicked off his head and wrong-footed Alphonse Areola in the 81st minute, but PSG were never truly threatened again in stretching their lead at the top.

Valencia 1 Barcelona 1: Alba saves Barca after officials deny certain Messi goal

    46B89E0E00000578-5119255-image-a-224_1511732159496.jpg

Jordi Alba scored late on against his former club to salvage a 1-1 draw for Barcelona in Sunday's top-of-the-table clash against Valencia, but the match was marred by a hugely controversial decision to not allow a first-half Lionel Messi goal.

Messi tried his luck with a first-time effort on the edge of the area after half an hour and goalkeeper Neto fumbled the shot, resulting in the ball crossing the line by about a yard, but referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva and his officials failed to spot it, effectively costing Barca two points.

Ernesto Valverde's men produced what was arguably one of their best halves of football so far this season in the first period, as they quickly got to grips with Valencia's intense style and asserted their dominance at Mestalla.

The officials took centre stage with their howler, though, before Barca's misery worsened after the break.Valencia were significantly more threatening from an attacking perspective in the second half, resulting in Rodrigo turning home from inside the six-yard box.

Barca ensured they returned home with a point, however, as Alba made the most of a sublime Messi pass to keep the club's unbeaten start to the league season – and four-point lead over Valencia – intact, but there will be an undoubted element of frustration over the first-half controversy.

Barca looked to establish control early on by enjoying periods of keep-ball in the final third, but Valencia's aggressive pressing forced a few errors and provided some encouragement.

Ivan Rakitic was guilty of one of those mistakes, as his wayward pass back towards Thomas Vermaelen – starting in LaLiga for the first time in 22 months – was intercepted by Simone Zaza, but Samuel Umtiti made a vital last-ditch block to deny Rodrigo after he was fed by his strike partner.Barca soon got to grips with Valencia's approach and began to dominate, but they were astonishingly denied the lead after half an hour.

Neto fumbled Messi's first-time 18-yard effort, before seeing the ball squirm through his legs and cross the line, but the officials failed to award the goal, leaving Barca apoplectic.

Valencia almost rubbed salt in the wounds by breaking down the other end on the counter-attack, with Zaza firing narrowly wide from the edge of the area.
The hosts began the second half with renewed urgency in the final third and put Barca under more of pressure, with Zaza shooting just off target again from 20 yards after good play by Goncalo Guedes.

Guedes caused trouble again just before the hour mark, running at Umtiti and skipping past him in the area, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen rushed out to block his eventual shot.

But Ter Stegen was helpless a few minutes later when Guedes found the overlapping Jose Gaya and his low cross was turned in from close range by Rodrigo. The home fans were silenced in the 82nd minute, though, as a moment of genius from Messi ultimately provided Barca with the catalyst to salvage a result.

The Argentina star spotted the run of Alba into the area and clipped a marvellous pass into the left-back's path, and he duly provided a classy finish past the helpless Neto.

Valencia enjoyed some more late pressure and Zaza smashed a volley over the crossbar for one of the final touches of the match, but it finished all-square thanks in part to Villanueva's horrendous gaffe in the first half.

Juventus 3 Crotone 0: Bianconeri warm up for Napoli clash with routine win

    46B8B0C700000578-0-image-a-11_1511738531069.jpg

Juventus returned to winning ways in Serie A as goals from Mario Mandzukic, Mattia De Sciglio and Medhi Benatia secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Crotone at the Allianz Stadium.

Massimiliano Allegri's side suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat to Sampdoria last weekend, but bounced back in style to keep the pressure on Inter and Napoli, who had both won earlier in the weekend.Juve now travel to league leaders Napoli on Friday knowing that a win will put them just one point behind Maurizio Sarri's high-flying side at the summit of Serie A.

The Bianconeri dominated throughout and should have opened the scoring in the first half, but Blaise Matuidi squandered two golden opportunities to open his account for the club following his move from Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Mandzukic eased any nerves in the 51st minute with a fine header, as Juve equalled their own Serie A record of scoring in 43 consecutive league games.Substitute De Sciglio then scored the first senior goal of his career with a superb strike from distance on the hour before Benatia tapped in from close-range to complete the scoring in the 71st minute.

Juventus, who handed a belated debut to Benedikt Howedes following his loan move from Schalke in August, started on the front foot and should have been ahead after four minutes.

Matuidi collected Douglas Costa's pass just inside the penalty area but, after seeing off the attentions of two Crotone defenders, he flashed his shot wide of Alex Cordaz's right post. The well-organised visitors kept Juve at bay for the opening half hour, limiting them to shots from distance and hopeful crosses, which were comfortably dealt with by defenders Arlind Ajeti, Federico Ceccherini and Mario Sampirisi.

France international Matuidi again came close to breaking the deadlock 10 minutes before the break, heading agonisingly wide from Costa's clipped cross.Cordaz then got down well to push away Alex Sandro's fierce drive, while Mandzukic headed just wide as Juve cranked up the pressure before the interval.

Juve's relentless approach paid off six minutes into the second half as Mandzukic scored just his third league goal of the season.Andrea Barzagli roamed into space down the right and whipped in a cross that the Croatian expertly guided into the corner with his head, giving Cordaz no chance.

De Sciglio replaced Stephan Lichtsteiner after 56 minutes and, just four minutes later, he crashed in a stunning long-range drive with just his third touch of the ball to double Juve's advantage - his first goal in over 180 appearances for club and country.

Juve then got their third 11 minutes later when substitute Miralem Pjanic's cross was parried by Cordaz into the path of Benatia, who had the simple task of slotting home from inside the six-yard box.

Huddersfield Town 1 Manchester City 2: Late Sterling goal sets new away wins record

    46B79D8200000578-0-image-a-141_1511718294757.jpg

A late Raheem Sterling winner secured Manchester City a record-breaking 11th successive away victory in all competitions, as the Premier League pacesetters claimed a hard-fought 2-1 triumph at Huddersfield Town.

City appeared to be on the brink of dropping points in the league for the first time since August 21, but a fortuitous Sterling goal six minutes from the end spared Pep Guardiola's blushes, their 11th straight win on the road setting a new record for English top-flight clubs.City dominated the first half and looked particularly threatening when David Silva got himself on the ball, the Spain international crafting numerous chances.

But City wasted most of the plethora of opportunities which fell their way, with Huddersfield taking the lead just before the break thanks to a Nicolas Otamendi own goal, which had more than a hint of luck about it.City were level again shortly after the restart, though, as Sergio Aguero converted a penalty and Leroy Sane nearly added another shortly afterwards, rattling the crossbar with a fierce free-kick.

Attacks came thick and fast towards the end for City and eventually their persistence paid off, with Sterling bundling home a rebound to maintain the eight-point gap at the top of the table and secure an 11th consecutive league win.

The home side were under significant pressure at times during the early exchanges, but their dogged defending initially managed to limit City's clear-cut chances.City began to find joy once Silva took charge in midfield, however. The Spaniard was particularly prominent in the 23rd minute, releasing Sane into the penalty area in a quick one-two, with the winger then flashing a teasing ball across the face of goal.

Silva was at the centre of things again just after the half-hour mark, exchanging passes with Kevin De Bruyne and finding Aguero in the area, but his first touch let him down and allowed Christopher Schindler to make a vital block.

Silva found Aguero again soon after, but this time the striker was denied by Jonas Lossl, before Sterling smashed the rebound wide. And Huddersfield punished that profligacy on the stroke of half-time – Schindler flicking on a corner and finding the net via Otamendi's shoulder.

But the away side enjoyed an electric start to the second half and were level inside two minutes, as Aguero coolly stroked home from 12 yards after Scott Malone clumsily tripped Sterling in the penalty area.

Sane almost completed the turnaround for City 10 minutes later, striking the bar with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick.Guardiola threw caution to the wind in search of the three points, replacing Vincent Kompany with Gabriel Jesus 10 minutes from the end.

And the Brazilian played a role in City's winning goal four minutes later, latching on to a De Bruyne pass and shooting at Lossl, whose save saw the ball bounce back on to Sterling and into the net.

The hosts fought until the end, but ultimately they did not have enough and Rajiv van La Parra highlighted their frustration right at the death, receiving a red card after the final whistle for pushing Sane in the face.

Udinese 0 Napoli 1: Jorginho strike reclaims top spot

    wire-1797886-1511732768-358_634x431.jpg

Napoli took back top spot in Serie A as a fortunate first-half goal from Jorginho secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Udinese.

Inter's victory at Cagliari on Saturday had edged Luciano Spalletti's side into first place, but Napoli ensured the Nerazzurri's lead was short-lived with a battling performance at Friuli.

In a first half of few chances, it was not until the half-hour that Napoli made a breakthrough when veteran defender Christian Maggio went down under pressure from Gabriele Angella in Udinese's area.

Jorginho had converted all three of his previous penalties this season, but - after a lengthy delay - he saw a tame effort saved by Simone Scuffet. However, the ball fell back to the Italy midfielder and he tucked home on the rebound..

Napoli should have put the result beyond all doubt with just over 15 minutes remaining, only for Jose Callejon to drill a close-range strike straight at Scuffet.Ultimately though, Callejon's miss mattered little, as Napoli saw off their hosts to move two points clear of Inter - with Pepe Reina making a good save from Antonin Barak late on.

Napoli's win makes it 21 away games unbeaten in Serie A, while Udinese remain in 14th place - just two points clear of the relegation places.

Alexis Sanchez converted a 92nd-minute penalty to give Arsenal a 1-0 win and a third successive stoppage-time victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday. The Gunners won both matches last season by virtue of last-gasp goals - a Sanchez spot-kick also proving decisive at Emirates Stadium in January - and the Chile international repeated the feat after James Tarkowski was adjudged to have pushed Aaron Ramsey.

Having won just one of their previous six Premier League away trips, Arsenal appeared set to drop more points on the road after an uninspiring performance in attack.

Arsene Wenger's side clearly missed the influence of Mesut Ozil, sidelined by illness, as they struggled to unlock a Burnley outfit which had previously conceded only twice in six home league matches this term. But the last-gasp spot-kick proved all the visitors needed to leapfrog rivals Tottenham into fourth, with Sean Dyche's side missing their own opportunity to do exactly that.

Instead, Dyche's men were left to contend with yet another heartbreaking defeat to a team against which they have now lost 1-0 in each of the past three Turf Moor meetings.

Burnley began with typical vigour as Ashley Barnes, starting ahead of Chris Wood, looked an early danger in the air.Their energetic start came close to earning the opener when the ball was worked right to Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who danced around Nacho Monreal and slammed his shot against the outside of the near post.

Ramsey should have broken the deadlock after Alexandre Lacazette escaped down the left and whipped in a teasing cross, but the midfielder skied his half-volley under little pressure.

An entertaining first half-hour continued with Petr Cech preventing Jeff Hendrick's header from going back across goal, while Monreal drove a long-range effort marginally wide at the other end.Cech remained the busier of the two goalkeepers late in the half as he pushed away Robbie Brady's goal-bound free-kick to keep it scoreless at the interval.

Arsenal appeared to have more purpose immediately after the restart and saw Ben Mee block a good opening for Sead Kolasinac, before Lacazette forced Nick Pope into his first real save.

Gudmundsson did fire another warning shot at Cech but the visitors had wrestled the initiative by the hour and saw appeals for a penalty waved away after Brady slid in on Hector Bellerin. The Republic of Ireland international then threatened to snatch the winner by firing over the bar with just over 15 minutes to play.

Burnley's nerves were tested when Wilshere's attempt at the other end deflected wide off Tarkowski, who cost his side a share of the points in the second minute of added time as Ramsey went down and Sanchez squeezed the ball beyond Pope's fingertips into the bottom-left corner.

    Arsenal's stoppage-time winner a 'clear penalty' - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was in little doubt over the merit of the stoppage-time penalty which gave his side a last-gasp 1-0 victory at Burnley on Sunday.

Alexis Sanchez scored a 92nd-minute winner from the spot after Aaron Ramsey was adjudged to have been pushed over in the area by James Tarkowski.

Burnley were incensed by the decision, which consigned them to a third-successive stoppage-time defeat against the Gunners - the last two of which have been sealed by Sanchez spot-kicks.

However, Wenger was strong in his initial assessment of the incident."It looked a clear penalty. I will have to watch it again. I can understand [Burnley] are disappointed," Wenger said at his post-match press conference."[Ramsey] didn't throw himself on the ground. He said he wanted to flick the ball on and was pushed on the back."

Arsenal had appeared set to drop points on the road for the sixth time this Premier League season, having struggled to create chances in the absence of Mesut Ozil, who was ruled out through illness.

But an improved display after the interval resulted in what Wenger felt was a warranted second away win of the campaign.

"After the win against Tottenham, it was important to go away and win and that's what we did," he said."In the second half, I felt was all us... even if we missed our final ball."We kept a clean sheet, we won 1-0 and I want to congratulate my three centre-backs [Nacho Monreal, Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi]."

Martial happy to work under 'tough' Mourinho at Manchester United

Anthony Martial has revealed he is happy to work under Jose Mourinho, while admitting that at first he struggled to get along with 'the Special One' at Manchester United.Martial has struggled to claim a regular place in the starting line-up since Mourinho arrived at Old Trafford in 2016.

The France international, however, has proved United's super sub on more than one occasion, forcing him into contention for a first XI spot.

Martial has subsequently affirmed that he is getting used to Mourinho's no-nonsense style of management."Jose Mourinho, he was tough with me, I think we didn't understand each other, but we got to know each other, we talked a lot and it's going very well," he explained to Telefoot.

"I had minor extra-sports problems, it played in my head, I wasn't very focused and now as soon as I get back on the pitch, I look to make a big impact."

The 21-year-old also pointed out that he was at the very beginning of his career, and believes he can only get better with time.

"Some people sometimes forget my age, with talent, they wait for me to explode quickly, but everyone has their future," he added. "I want to win as many titles as possible."Martial joined United from Monaco in 2015 at the tender age of 19, and has gone on to rack up 110 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 32 goals to date.
