Napoli 0 Juventus 1: Higuain hands boost to title defence against former club

    46E3472D00000578-5137523-image-a-2_1512160743487.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain overcame a fractured hand to help Juventus pull within a point of leaders Napoli in the Serie A title race, scoring the decisive goal in a tight 1-0 win over his former club.Higuain had been a doubt for Friday's contest against the team he left for Juve in a €90million move in July last year after undergoing surgery on his left hand.

But the Argentina striker was named in the starting XI and needed just 12 minutes to make what proved to be the key contribution as Juve boosted their momentum in the hunt for a seventh successive Scudetto, while Napoli's hopes of a first league title since the 1989-90 season hit an early setback.Napoli have lit up both Serie A and the Champions League this season with their entertaining and free-scoring style of play under Maurizio Sarri.

Yet they were frustrated following Higuain's opener, with Gianluigi Buffon untested in the Juve goal in the second half. The Turin club are now second - a point ahead of Inter, who can go top with a win over Chievo on Sunday, having played a game more - and remain three clear of Roma, who beat SPAL 3-1 in the day's earlier game.

Both teams must quickly turn their attention to Champions League football in midweek, with Napoli taking on Feyenoord and Juventus visiting Olympiacos as they each bid to seal a place in the last 16.

Higuain forced Pepe Reina into action in the fourth minute as he was denied at the near post after being played in by Douglas Costa. The same two players were involved when Reina was beaten eight minutes later.Costa started a quick counter-attack and Paulo Dybala's superb pass found Higuain, who slotted the ball inside Reina's left-hand post.

Napoli responded well, though, and Marek Hamsik forced Buffon to parry behind with a long-range strike. But Costa continued to cause Napoli problems on the break, another marauding run leading to a cutback that Higuain saw deflected for a corner, from which Medhi Benatia lashed wide.

Lorenzo Insigne curled towards the roof of the net only to be thwarted by Buffon, who then kept out his header from the resulting corner.Dybala threatened to double Juve's lead before the break, but could not produce the finish to match his surge into the Napoli half.

Jose Callejon flashed a shot wide as Napoli continued to be frustrated despite dictating the play, and the San Paolo grew further exasperated when the hosts were denied a penalty when Dries Mertens went down as he battled for the ball with Giorgio Chiellini.

Napoli were grateful to Reina for keeping them within touching distance in the 68th minute, the Spaniard turning over Blaise Matuidi's strike into the ground after the France midfielder latched on to Miralem Pjanic's perfectly weighted cross-field ball.

Insigne drove wide of the far post on the half-volley in what was Napoli's last legitimate chance, Juve successfully sitting deep to secure a result that will, despite Napoli's position at the summit, reaffirm their status as title favourites.

Chelsea's 'perplexing' fixture list hands Manchester City the advantage - Conte

Antonio Conte believes that the Premier League's fixture list has had an adverse effect on Chelsea's chances to retain their title as Manchester City sit 11 points ahead in the table.Chelsea play on Saturday afternoon against Newcastle United having had less than three days to prepare having faced Swansea City on Wednesday evening.

Conte rested Eden Hazard, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Cesar Azpilicueta midweek so the trio would be fresh for the clash against Rafael Benitez's side but he thinks that the Magpies' extra day of rest gives them the advantage.

"Yes, I must be honest," Conte said in a news conference at Cobham Training Ground. "Newcastle played on Tuesday and we played on Wednesday and now we play at 12:30 on Saturday. It has happened again. I don’t want to complain but OK once it can happen."Against Watford we should have played on Monday and then they changed to Saturday at 12.30 after we played on Wednesday. OK, once it can happen.Twice it can happen. Against Man City, then you start to be perplexed.

"And now against Newcastle. I don’t want advantages. I want the same rest as our opponents. Is it difficult to do this? I don’t think so. It is a strange coincidence. I want to protect my club, my players, my fans, also the Premier League. We have 11 points less but when we played Manchester City they had one day more rest than us.

"Against Liverpool, they rested one day more. Only 14 games and it has happened four times. It is very difficult to think this is a coincidence, honestly. I don’t want advantages, only the same rest. If we play every two days, I’m ready. I only want the same rest as our opponents, then we see what happens.

"I spoke with my club and I hope they do something about the situation. I’m trying to protect my club and the fans and maybe the league. Every team has this situation. But from the start of the season I see only Chelsea."

'Amazing' Ronaldo will win fifth Ballon d'Or and deserves it - Zidane

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo will pull level with Barcelona rival Lionel Messi and win a fifth Ballon d'Or next week.

France Football are set to reveal the winner of world football's most coveted individual award next Thursday, with competition between the era's dominant players as fierce as ever.

Messi has shown stunning individual form for club and country, helping Barcelona to establish a healthy lead at the top of La Liga after dragging Argentina into the 2018 World Cup.

Ronaldo has arguably failed to match his old rival in terms of virtuoso performances but a stunning goalscoring run in the knockout stages inspired Madrid's run to back-to-back Champions League triumphs and they also pipped Barcelona to top-flight glory in Spain last season.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Athletic Bilbao, Zidane showed little regard for the prospect of it being a close race between Messi and his star man."Ronaldo's human, just like us but he is very different at times. He has no limits, really," he said.

"The fact that he's going to win his fifth Ballon d'Or explains that. It's just amazing. "He deserves it as well. I'm sure Cristiano is going to win his fifth Ballon d'Or."It doesn't surprise me. He wants more and more. He has the ambition to win a sixth or a seventh

"I think he deserves the award for the season he's had."Ronaldo won the Best FIFA Men's Player in London in October, with Messi and PSG forward Neymar finishing second and third respectively.

But last month images appeared online of a supposedly leaked version of the front cover of December's France Football magazine, which suggested Messi would be the victor this time around and move their career Ballon d'Or tally to 6-4 in his favour.

Pogba: I won't fight Young over Manchester United free-kick duties

Young scored twice in the 4-2 victory at Vicarage Road on Tuesday, his second an outstanding strike from a set-piece 25 yards from goal.

Manager Jose Mourinho admitted afterwards he was surprised to see Pogba allow the England international to assume dead-ball responsibilities, especially since it was the Frenchman who drew the foul from Abdoulaye Doucoure in the first place.

But Pogba insists he will let Young try his luck again in Saturday's crunch clash with Arsenal if he feels ready.

"To be honest, I won the foul and he just came and took the ball straight away," he told MUTV. "He didn't even speak because he was so confident. He took it and scored.

"But I would never fight for a free-kick or a penalty, or whatever, because we all want the same result. We want to score and we want to win the game. So I was very happy."

Asked who would take one against the Gunners, he replied: "The one who is feeling it the most. Ash just scored the goal at Watford so if he feels it then fine, or I feel it then I will tell him. We will see what happens in the game."

Paul Pogba says he will not fight Ashley Young over free-kick duties for Manchester United and praised his team-mate for his "confidence" against Watford.

United head into the clash at Emirates Stadium eight points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and Pogba knows the importance of a positive result, especially with the derby at Old Trafford coming up on December 10.

"These games that are coming up are very important for the rest of the season," he said. "This is Manchester United and Arsenal, we don't know want to lose to one of the big teams in England and they will want to beat us at their home.

"But we need three points to get closer to Manchester City. That it is. Away wins help you to win the league so they are very important, and it is a very important game this weekend."Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger expects Alexandre Lacazette to miss the game through injury and Pogba is glad United will not have to worry about his France team-mate.

"Alex has been great and at this moment he is scoring goals and playing well for the team," he said. "He is a big player for them and if he is not there I would say it is good for us. I hope for us that he doesn't play because that will help us, but I also hope he doesn't have a bad injury."

Deschamps earmarks Argentina as potential France World Cup threat

Didier Deschamps acknowledges France's World Cup group could have been worse, but has earmarked Argentina as a potential threat should they make the knockout stages.

Les Bleus, winners in 1998 and among many people's favourites to triumph in Russia, will face Australia, Peru and Denmark in Group C.

If France, who played Denmark in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, make it to the last 16 they could face Argentina – who scraped their way into the tournament with a Lionel Messi-inspired victory over Ecuador in their final qualifier – depending on how they fare in Group D.

Neuer and Germany wary of Italy-conquering Swedes

Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer believes Sweden sounded a World Cup warning with their play-off victory over Italy.

Joachim Low's world champions begin their Russia 2018 campaign in Group F against Mexico – a side they dispatched 4-1 on the way to Confederations Cup glory earlier this year.

South Korea are also in the section alongside Sweden, whose two-legged 1-0 triumph over Italy last month meant the Azzurri missed out on the World Cup finals for the first time since 1958.

Athletic Bilbao 0 Real Madrid 0: Ramos sees red as champions miss chance at San Mames

    46ECE44100000578-5139905-image-a-216_1512251969475.jpg

Real Madrid had Sergio Ramos sent off late on and wasted a chance to gain ground in the LaLiga title race with a frustrating 0-0 draw against struggling Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Saturday.

Barcelona's earlier draw at home to Celta Vigo gave Los Blancos the opportunity to cut the gap in LaLiga to six points, but a recurrence of their wayward finishing was largely to blame for a failure to secure victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Toni Kroos were both guilty for letting chances slip in the first half, while the contest might have been different had Karim Benzema not hit the post in just the eighth minute.Defying the form that has seen them tumble to a concerning 15th, Athletic remained competitive throughout and were not without opportunities to snatch what would have been just a fourth win of the league campaign.

Instead, they will have to be content with an encouraging draw that slightly eases the mounting pressure on manager Jose Angel Ziganda.

The champions, meanwhile, remain eight points adrift of rivals Barca, although the draw was enough to nudge back into fourth ahead of next weekend's opponents Sevilla – a match Ramos will miss following his second yellow for an elbow on Aritz Aduriz.

The visitors started brightly and only the woodwork denied them an early opener, Benzema firing into the base of the left post following a deft chest-down from Isco's cross.

Keylor Navas, in his first LaLiga appearance since October, was eager to reaffirm his place as Madrid's undisputed number one and reacted well to palm away Aduriz's glancing header.

Reports suggest Kepa Arrizabalaga could become a positional rival for Navas in January and the Athletic goalkeeper was tested twice in quick succession by Ronaldo and Kroos. The home side were creating openings of their own, though, and might have done better when Raul Garcia's miscued finish almost dropped for Aduriz.

Kroos, Ronaldo and Raphael Varane all then failed to make the most of further opportunities as Ziganda's men scrambled to the break unharmed.Navas came under renewed pressure after the restart, first parrying Aduriz's low effort and then blanketing Markel Susaeta's attempted chip from a narrow angle.

Talismanic attacker Ronaldo almost broke deadlock out of nothing with just over 20 minutes remaining as his fierce left-footed volley fizzed just wide of the near post. That effort inspired Madrid into exerting greater pressure going forward, but clear-cut chances were tough to extract from the resilient Rojiblancos.

And the champions' frustrating night was compounded when Ramos – who was making his return in this game as he recovers from a broken nose – was shown a second yellow for leading with the elbow on Aduriz.

Arsenal 1 Manchester United 3: De Gea stars as United survive Pogba dismissal

    46EB78E300000578-5139519-image-a-142_1512236865476.jpg

Manchester United survived the second-half dismissal of Paul Pogba to end Arsenal's 12-game winning run at home in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory at Emirates Stadium - but only thanks to the brilliance of David de Gea.

The Premier League heavyweights took part in a slugfest in the English capital, with Jose Mourinho's side somehow surviving some seriously heavy punishment to run out victors and close the gap on leaders Manchester City to five points.

United capitalised on some poor defending to race out to a 2-0 lead, Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard punishing early Arsenal mistakes, before Alexandre Lacazette - a surprise selection after Arsene Wenger had said he would be sidelined for the fixture - halved the deficit early in the second half.

However, Arsenal's bid for a third straight home win over their rivals ran aground against the rock-solid De Gea, who produced a string of outstanding saves either side of the break to keep his team in front.

Lingard's second of the game in the 63rd minute restored a two-goal cushion and, while Pogba saw red for a stamp on Hector Bellerin that will rule him out of next weekend's Manchester derby, United held firm to triumph on their travels.

Arsenal will wonder quite how they ended up with nothing from a pulsating encounter, albeit their problems were all of their own making when a side who had previously only conceded four league goals at home in the season gifted their opponents a 2-0 lead inside 11 minutes.

Laurent Koscielny's wayward cross-field pass inadvertently set up Valencia's opener before Shkodran Mustafi's carelessness in possession led to Lingard scoring, the England international not even having to break stride to convert Anthony Martial's exquisite reverse pass in behind.Yet despite the disastrous start, plus the loss of the injured Mustafi that forced a change in formation with a switch to a flat-back four, the hosts peppered United's goal for the remainder of the half.

Lacazette was twice denied by De Gea, who relied on his reactions to block a close-range toe poke before combining forces with the crossbar to keep out another on-target attempt from the Frenchman.

The visiting goalkeeper even had to deny Romelu Lukaku from scoring for the first time in open play at the Emirates, dropping low to his left to make sure his team-mate's inadvertent touch on a dangerous free-kick did not nestle in his own net.

While Lacazette finally beat De Gea when Aaron Ramsey's poor touch from Alexis Sanchez's cross dropped perfectly into his path, the Spaniard continued to repel a home team smelling blood.

United's last line of defence saved his best for the 56th minute, not only turning away Lacazette's low drive at his right post but also preventing Sanchez from tapping home the rebound, stretching out a leg to make a crucial block. The double save proved a turning point, with United landing a sucker punch soon after. Lingard, who had already hit the post after the break, capped a fine individual performance by tapping home from close range, ending Arsenal's comeback bid.

After providing the assist for the third goal, Pogba left his team-mates to finish the game a man light with his lunge on Bellerin. The red card did not prove costly in terms of the outcome, but the Frenchman will now miss his team's next three domestic games, starting with the clash against City.

:love:De Gea equals record for most saves in a Premier League game

    1NiKeN8.jpg

David de Gea has equalled the record for most saves in a Premier League game, by posting the joint highest tally in the last 14 years. The Manchester United goalkeeper recorded 14 saves against Arsenal on Saturday, helping his side to a vital 3-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners kept De Gea busy all night and the goalkeeper responded in spectacular fashion, particularly on a stunning double save in the second half on Alexandre Lacazette and Alexis Sanchez.
The 27-year-old equalled the mark that is shared by Tim Krul (Newcastle v. Spurs in Nov 2013) and Vito Mannone (Sunderland v. Chelsea in Apr 2014).
No save data exists prior to the 2003-04 campaign, but De Gea's tally is the joint best since Opta began collecting save data.De Gea's saves helped his side overcome Paul Pogba's red card in the second half, as the Red Devils hung on to close to within five points of Manchester City, though Pep Guardiola's side do have a game in hand.

Atletico Madrid 2 Real Sociedad 1: Last-gasp Griezmann winner cuts gap to Barca

    46EB289B00000578-0-image-a-11_1512261220112.jpg

Antoine Griezmann scored a dramatic winner with two minutes remaining as Atletico Madrid salvaged a 2-1 comeback victory over Real Sociedad in LaLiga.

The France international did not celebrate against his former club as Atletico continued their unbeaten start to the league season and closed the deficit to Barcelona to six points after the leaders drew 2-2 with Celta Vigo earlier on Saturday.Willian Jose scored his seventh league goal of the season with a first-half penalty as Real threatened a shock victory.

But Filipe Luis responded after the break by netting for the first time since April as Atletico's club-record beginning to a LaLiga campaign progressed to 14 matches without defeat.

An inspired goalkeeping performance from Geronimo Rulli looked like it would deny Atleti a winner until Griemzann bundled in from close range in the final moments, giving the in-form hosts a fifth win in six matches across all competitions.Real sit seventh, 11 points behind Atletico, after a run of only one win in six league games.

Atletico squandered an early chance when Kevin Gameiro broke the offside trap but took too long to pull the trigger, eventually opting to pass to Griezmann in a worse position.

Real were next to threaten when Thomas Partey, playing at right-back, lost possession in a dangerous area, allowing Xabi Prieto to set up Willian Jose, who could only blaze his left-footed strike over from 12 yards.

Willian Jose turned creator when his cross found Prieto at the far post in the visitors' next attack, but a combination of goalkeeper Jan Oblak and a backtracking Filipe Luis denied the Real captain.

The visitors were on top and their spot-kick was awarded when Mikel Oyarzabal latched on to David Zurutuza's throughball and attempted to round Oblak, who was adjudged to have fouled the winger.Willian Jose took the 29th-minute penalty and drilled his effort past Oblak, the keeper guessing the wrong way.

Gameiro and Gabi presented Angel Correa with two superb opportunities in quick succession to bring Atletico level before half-time, but away shot-stopper Rulli saved with his legs on both occasions to frustrate the hosts.

Correa's woes continued after the break when, having been provided a glorious chance by a passing move that finished with Koke playing him in, he somehow skied his close-range finish with Rulli on the way down and almost the whole goal to aim at.

There was more frustration for the hosts when Griezmann volleyed into the top corner only for an offside flag to deny him, while the France international had another effort saved soon after, as did Koke.

Atletico got a deserved equaliser after 63 minutes when Saul Niguez's deep cross found Filipe Luis and the full-back turned inside Prieto and lashed an accurate finish into the far corner with his weaker right foot from 12 yards.

Prieto collected Oyarzabal's delivery and fired over from a good chance at the other end, but Atletico were dominant after the break and only more heroics from a diving Rulli denied Griezmann from heading in.

Diego Simeone brought on Yannick Carrasco and Fernando Torres as he searched for a winner, with Rulli keeping out an acrobatic effort from the latter shortly after his arrival, while Zurutuza was off-target with a free header for Real as the match entered its closing stages.

It looked like there would be no winner for either side until Saul's looping, deflected header led to a sliding Griezmann converting from a yard out at the far post for his fourth goal in three games in all competitions, delighting the Wanda Metropolitano crowd.

Brighton and Hove Albion 1 Liverpool 5: Firmino at the double for Klopp's counter-attacking Reds

    46E954EA00000578-5139235-image-a-24_1512229097524.jpg

Roberto Firmino scored twice as Liverpool cruised to a 5-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion in an entertaining Premier League contest on the south coast.

The Reds looked to be out of sight when they netted twice in two first-half minutes and then extended their lead further after the break, but Glenn Murray pulled a goal back to threaten a fightback. It never materialised, though, as Jurgen Klopp's men turned on the style in the closing stages.

Brighton have made the Amex Stadium somewhat of a fortress this season, previously losing only to Manchester City, but they could not deny Liverpool a victory that was set in motion by Emre Can's 30th-minute opener.

Firmino's first swiftly followed as Brighton struggled to cope with the speed of the visiting attack, with Klopp's side then adding a third - through the Brazilian forward again - after the restart.

Again there was a second strike in quick succession, but this time it was Brighton's - Murray netting from the penalty spot having twice earlier squandered big chances.

Murray could have scored again, too, but Liverpool added an extra gloss to proceedings with two late goals, both inspired by Philippe Coutinho, as the Reds moved above Arsenal and into the top four.

Coutinho and Mohamed Salah were among six changes made by visiting boss Klopp from the midweek defeat of Stoke City, including Can and Georginio Wijnaldum in a makeshift three-man defence - largely due to Joel Matip's absence.
And Salah was quickly in the thick of an action, dashing down the left to force a corner from which Firmino wastefully nodded over the top.

Brighton's determined early stance contributed to limited attacking opportunities at either end, but Murray might have done better when he turned and blasted off target from inside the area in a rare opening for the home side. Can broke the hosts' resolve on the half-hour mark, though, climbing to head home a set-piece from Coutinho, who quickly supplied the second, too.

The hosts were still reeling from the opener as Salah and Coutinho broke on the left and Firmino arrived in the box to meet the latter's centre for a simple - yet devastating - finish.

The game then seesawed dramatically as the second half set off at a frantic pace, with Simon Mignolet brilliantly denying Murray from close range before Firmino's second followed at the other end.

It was another blistering Liverpool counter and the slaloming Salah teed up Firmino for a simple finish, but the three-goal margin lasted only three minutes.

Referee Graham Scott awarded what appeared to be a soft penalty against Reds captain Jordan Henderson as he tussled with Shane Duffy, allowing Murray to finally find the net from 12 yards. Mat Ryan smartly prevented Salah from adding his name to the scoresheet with a left-footed effort following Firmino's pass and the goalkeeper was soon tested again by the influental Coutinho.

Murray's snapshot on the turn fizzed wide as Brighton kept pushing, but another flurry late on put a third consecutive away league win beyond doubt for Klopp's men.

Coutinho's magnificent free-kick crept under the wall for the fourth and the Brazilian magician forced the fifth, too, as Lewis Dunk deflected a shot beyond Ryan in the dying seconds.
