Tottenham 5 Stoke City 1: Kane at the double to pile pain on Potters

    472772C100000578-5162635-image-a-51_1512836396392.jpg

Harry Kane helped himself to a second-half brace in a 5-1 rout as Stoke City collapsed to a familiar thrashing at the hands of Tottenham.

The past three matches between the sides had finished 4-0 in favour of Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino could not have wished for more accommodating opponents as his team won for the first time in five Premier League matches.Ryan Shawcross' unfortunate own goal – the Stoke captain's sixth in the top flight – punctuated an uneventful first half but the wheels came off in worrying fashion for City boss Mark Hughes after the interval.

Kane had already passed up a pair of glorious chances by the time the excellent Son Heung-min made it 2-0 and the England striker's double made it three goals in the space of 12 second-half minutes.Christian Eriksen got in on the act as Stoke's defence unravelled terribly, with Shawcross heading into the intended net 10 minutes from the end offering meagre consolation.

Spurs are up to fifth, above Arsenal and Burnley on goal difference, while Stoke and their battered goal difference sit precariously three points above the relegation zone.

The game was low on goalmouth action during the opening stages and there was a significant slice of fortune when Tottenham hit the front after 21 minutes.Son had provided most of Spurs' attacking spark by that stage and the South Korea international made his latest dart for the byline down the left flank and whipped in a low cross.

His delivery flicked up off Kurt Zouma and Shawcross could do little as the ball struck him in the chest and zipped past goalkeeper Jack Butland.Wembley was waiting for the net to bulge when Son threaded a pass through to Kane, played on-side by Stoke youngster Tom Edwards, but the striker uncharacteristically slotted wide.

Unperturbed by his earlier setback, Shawcross got in the way at close quarters to deny Kane with a pair of blocks two minutes before half-time.

Kane was still struggling to locate his usual poise early in the second period when Stoke failed to clear a corner and he hacked wildly over from four yards. It fell to Son to show him how it was done in the 53rd minute, scampering on to Dele Alli's throughball and smashing past Butland after Harry Winks' flicked pass on the turn launched a Tottenham counter-attack.Stoke were rattled and Butland scrambled behind having ceded possession to Kane before the Spurs striker finally got on the scoresheet 90 seconds after Son's goal.

Ben Davies was given far too much space to hang up an inviting cross to the back post, where Tottenham's top scorer leapt to power home. There was a rare moment of encouragement for Stoke when Xherdan Shaqiri burst into the Tottenham box and forced a stunning reaction save from Hugo Lloris – Eric Dier turning the rebound just the right side of his own post.

Lloris' opposite number Butland was increasingly exposed and Edwards was found wanting when Son stole in front of him and laid off for Kane to sweep home with a sense of inevitability.Erik Lamela then replaced Alli for his first Tottenham home game on the other side of his 13-month injury ordeal and Wembley was willing the ball into the net when he lunged in to try beat Butland from close range.

Hughes is unlikely to be the recipient of similar goodwill back in Stoke after this latest thumping, compounded when Eriksen breezed beyond a vacant backline to gleefully accept Son's fine 74th-minute pass, even allowing for the quirk of Shawcross bookending the scoring.

There was still time for Butland to wonderfully deny Eriksen, leading to the uncomfortable conclusion that Stoke's best player in a 5-1 hammering had been their goalkeeper.

Eintracht Frankfurt 0 Bayern Munich 1: Vidal strikes again as goalkeeper crisis deepens

    4725CFF900000578-5162543-image-a-48_1512834101878.jpg

Arturo Vidal's fourth goal in as many Bundesliga games was enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Bayern Munich over Eintracht Frankfurt, but worryingly for the league leaders their goalkeeping crisis deepened.

Vidal ghosted in at the back post to head home Joshua Kimmich's cross after 20 minutes at the Commerzbank-Arena to continue his goalscoring streak, ultimately ensuring Bayern will top the table at Christmas for a record 23rd year. The Chile international's day ended early, though, as he was substituted after 55 minutes, Vidal having avoided a second booking moments earlier for a foul on Marius Wolf.

Vidal's match-winning header was Bayern's only effort on target in the opening half, and with Robert Lewandowski confined to a cameo role they continued to struggle after the restart.

Frankfurt had the better of the second period but like their illustrious visitors they offered little in the final third and failed to stretch Tom Starke on his first outing since coming out of retirement after Manuel Neuer's foot injury in September.

The hosts were briefly reduced to 10 men when Wolf was sent off after 73 minutes but the decision was changed to a yellow after consultation with VAR.It did not do Frankfurt any good, though, as Bayern extended their lead at the summit to eight points.

Having made five changes from their win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, Bayern were forced into another before kick-off as Sven Ulreich suffered an adductor problem in the warm-up.

That gave veteran Starke his 100th Bundesliga appearance, and he made a confidence-boosting early save to deny Ante Rebic. As the snow came down Frankfurt employed a high-pressing game but when they slacked off after 20 minutes Bayern capitalised.

A poor headed clearance from a right-wing corner dropped back to Kimmich and, with no challenge forthcoming, the full-back floated a sublime cross to the back post for Vidal to nod in.

Kimmich – featuring for Bayern for the 100th time – was proving a thorn in Frankfurt's side and another surging run led to Kingsley Coman lashing just wide. With half-time approaching Starke ensured Bayern's lead remained intact with a routine save from Jetro Willems, Frankfurt having fashioned the chance for the wing-back with a training-ground free-kick routine.

A lazy Vidal challenge on Wolf enraged the home fans eight minutes after the restart but referee Harm Osmers opted not to show a second yellow card.

The demand for a red card was met 17 minutes from time but Wolf was the recipient after a clumsy challenge from behind on James Rodriguez. However, Osmers consulted the video technology and reversed his decision, giving the winger a reprieve.

Even the introduction of leading goalscorer Lewandowski failed to produce a second goal for the visitors, but it mattered little as they secured a hard-earned three points to capitalise on RB Leipzig's draw at home to Mainz.

Borussia Dortmund 1 Werder Bremen 2: Defeat leaves Bosz on the brink

    4727376A00000578-5163249-image-a-1_1512853291231.jpg

Peter Bosz is on the brink of being sacked after his Borussia Dortmund side were beaten 2-1 at home by Bundesliga strugglers Werder Bremen on Saturday.Defeat extends Dortmund's wait for a league win to eight matches and the under-pressure Dutchman will struggle to survive such a poor result after sporting director Michael Zorc indicated it was a must-win fixture.

Bremen began the day second-bottom, despite an upturn in form under new coach Florian Kohfeldt, but the visitors fully deserved their shock win at a freezing Signal Iduna Park.

Maximilian Eggestein, who celebrated his 21st birthday on Friday, gave Bremen the lead with a sumptuous strike, finding space on the right side of the penalty area to whip an unstoppable shot into Roman Burki's top-right corner.

Dortmund did not record a single shot on target until the second half but levelled after 56 minutes, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scrambling home from close range after Shinji Kagawa headed Marcel Schmelzer's cross back into the box.

But Dortmund were undone by a set-piece after 65 minutes, Theodor Gebre Selassie powering a header past Burki from Max Kruse's right-wing corner, leaving Bosz in danger of being dismissed a mere five months into his reign.

Kruse, making his 200th Bundesliga appearance, had the first clear sight of goal after 12 minutes but Burki collected his snapshot at the second attempt.

Zlatko Junuzovic then lashed over the angle as Bremen, who won away from home in the Bundesliga for the first time since April, continued to make the running. And Bremen took a deserved lead after 25 minutes in which Dortmund had offered nothing.Eggestein collected a pass from Kruse, cut inside off the right flank to beat Raphael Guerreiro and curled a stunning left-footed effort out of Burki's reach.

Aubameyang had a weak penalty appeal rejected after he was bumped over in the box by Philipp Bargfrede and Andriy Yarmolenko sent a tame effort wide after 40 minutes but the half ended with visiting goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka having been completely untested.

Bosz, sensing the need to make radical changes to save his job, introduced Andre Schurrle and Nuri Sahin for Yarmolenko and Guerreiro, who had struggled in a central midfield role, at half-time.. Those switches yielded an immediate Dortmund improvement and Kagawa stung the palms of Pavlenka with a ferocious hit.

But Pavlenka could do little about Dortmund's equaliser, Aubameyang on target from point-blank range after Schmelzer's cross was cleverly headed back into the danger zone by Kagawa.

With Dortmund pushing to take the lead, Bremen wasted a terrific chance on the break break with four men on two, then Burki made a brilliant save down to his left to deny Kruse, who had scored four goals in his last three Bundesliga games.Burki was helpless as Bremen nudged back in front from from the resulting corner, however, Gebre Selassie getting up highest to thump in a terrific header.

Kagawa should have levelled after 71 minutes but thumped his close-range shot into a prone Aubameyang, the ball looping over the crossbar to sum up Bosz's seemingly ill-fated reign, then Schurrle fired straight at Pavlenka.

Bosz sent for 18-year-old striker Alexander Isak with his last throw of the dice, but Bremen held on for their first win at Dortmund since April 2007 to leave the Dutch coach in serious trouble.

West Ham 1 Chelsea 0: Arnautovic gives Moyes first win as Hammers boss

    4724FA1700000578-5162385-image-m-23_1512823916141.jpg

West Ham ended a run of eight successive Premier League matches without a win as they overcame the odds to beat Chelsea 1-0 in Saturday's London derby, giving David Moyes his first triumph at the club.

The Hammers were cruelly denied a point late on at Manchester City last time out, but against Chelsea they looked almost impenetrable, frustrating Antonio Conte's men throughout and preventing them from cutting the gap to Pep Guardiola's leaders.

This was the 41st consecutive Premier League matchday in which Moyes started in the relegation zone, setting a new record, but his West Ham side showed plenty to suggest that they are by no means a lost cause during the first half.

They had the lead within six minutes thanks to a well-worked goal from Marko Arnautovic, his first for the club, before sitting deeper and looking solid at the back.

With that approach working so well in the first half, Moyes had no intention of changing things and allowed Chelsea to have the lion's share of possession.

Chelsea threw men forward in desperate fashion towards the end, but West Ham's stubbornness gave them little hope, as Conte's men were left trailing City by 11 points, a margin which could be extended on Sunday after the Manchester derby.Despite the contrasting fortunes of the two sides coming into the game, West Ham were the ones to take the lead and they did so in style.

Manuel Lanzini found Arnautovic on the edge of the box and the Austrian darted into the area, jinked onto his left and sent a curling strike around Andreas Christensen into the bottom corner.

West Ham subsequently became very defensive, inviting pressure. And they needed Adrian - who retained his place with Joe Hart dropped to the bench - at his best twice in quick succession just before the half-hour mark, getting down to his left to deny long-range efforts from N'Golo Kante and then Davide Zappacosta.

But otherwise the home side did a fine job of restricting Chelsea's flow of chances, with their packed defence making it extremely difficult for the visitors to play through them.Proceedings continued in a similar fashion at the start of the second half, with Chelsea piling the pressure on and West Ham hoping to catch them on the break.

And the plan almost succeeded in the 54th minute, with Arnautovic flicking the ball into the Chelsea area after a swift counter and seeing it strike the arm of Christensen, referee Anthony Taylor waving penalty appeals away. But at the other end West Ham continued to keep Chelsea at bay, with Winston Reid making a vital block to halt Christensen's 10-yard volley.

Chelsea should have levelled late on through Alvaro Morata, but the Spaniard hurriedly lashed wide of the bottom-left corner from just inside the box and that proved to be the visitors' final chance, as West Ham successfully held on.

Chelsea miles off best form, Cahill concedes

Gary Cahill conceded that Chelsea were "miles" from their best as they were beaten 1-0 at West Ham to leave their Premier League title defence in tatters.

Marko Arnautovic's early goal proved decisive for the Hammers as the forward netted his first for the club at the end of a fine move inside the opening six minutes.

After that early breakthrough David Moyes' side were content to sit back and soak up the pressure, with Chelsea toiling fruitlessly at London Stadium.
And the lack of tempo and cutting edge to the visitors' play left Cahill deflated.

"We were miles off [our best] from the start," the defender told Sky Sports . "They got the early goal, which was a poor one on our behalf. We still had plenty time, but that laboured start carried on throughout the game.

"We didn't play our stuff. They got the goal, sat behind the ball and tried to hit on the break."It was a bit frustrating with their time wasting, which was clever on their part, but we were just not at the races. It was very disappointing."

Cahill was not about to concede defeat in the title race, though he did suggest that Sunday's Manchester derby could be crucial to that, with Manchester City able to go 14 points ahead of them if they beat United at Old Trafford."We have to wait and see," added Cahill. "It was a huge game for us and we needed to win.

"We have to sit back and wait for the results tomorrow. We have to freshen up and get the energy levels back up. We've been in good form recently which is why it's so disappointing."

Al Jazira, managed by former Barcelona and Chelsea coach Henk Ten Cate, edged out AFC Asian Champions League winners Urawa Red Diamonds at the quarter-final stage in Abu Dhabi on Saturday night.

A single Ali Mabkhout goal in the second half from a pass supplied by Romarinho was the difference between the teams.
Madrid fly to UAE on Sunday having trashed Sevilla 5-0 in their final La Liga game before commencing their FIFA Club World Cup campaign.Former Madrid star Lassana Diarra is on the books of Al Jazira but is not included in their squad for this tournament. He is expected to depart the club in the next transfer window.

'I warned you about Ronaldo!' - Zidane hails Ballon d'Or winner after Real rout

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane feels his faith in Cristiano Ronaldo was repaid in Saturday's 5-0 thrashing of Sevilla.

The Portugal star, who won his fifth Ballon d'Or this week to draw level with Lionel Messi in the all-time standings, was inspirational to his side's demolition of the visitors in the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo scored twice and was otherwise a menace to Eduardo Berizzo's side as Madrid scored all five goals before half-time, with Nacho Fernandez, Toni Kroos and Achraf Hakimi also on the scoresheet.
Zidane has defended Ronaldo's performances this season during a relative goal drought in La Liga, and he believes the 32-year-old's showing vindicated his support."It could be this is his perfect week and I hope he continues in this rhythm," he told a news conference.

"I already said – I didn't say it for nothing – because I know him and I know his ambition every day in training, I knew he was going to score. "Sometimes he doesn't and nobody is happy, but you always have to be careful with him."

Zidane hopes to see Madrid keep up this standard of performance as they prepare for the Club World Cup and the Clasico on December 23, although he is not convinced their first-half showing on Saturday was their best of the season.

"Hopefully we can keep on scoring, that's two games and eight goals and we have to continue like this," he said, with Madrid having also beaten Dortmund 3-2 in the Champions League this week.

"We're growing in every aspect. We're happy, we did really well and it was important to help us prepare for the game on Wednesday. There's no easy match but it's better to travel with this result.

"I don't think it was our best 45 minutes but, with goals, yes it was. On a playing level, I think we've had some good games, against Real [Sociedad] and Dortmund in the Champions League, for example.

"It's a good feeling; we scored five goals against a team it's not easy to play. To keep a clean sheet and score five, we're happy, but it's not the best."

The European champions now turn their attention to the semi-final of the Club World Cup next week, with a match against Al-Jazira to come on Wednesday.

Zidane offered some good news ahead of the game in Abu Dhabi, suggesting Raphael Varane and Gareth Bale could both be fit enough to play a part.
"They're going to travel with us. It's day-to-day out there," he added. "On Tuesday, I think they'll train normally and we'll see what we can do with them."

Manchester United 1 Manchester City 2: Otamendi strikes massive blow in Premier League title race

    47309D3500000578-5164879-image-a-211_1512931534807.jpg

Nicolas Otamendi was the surprise hero as Manchester City secured a 2-1 derby win over Manchester United to move 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

The Argentina defender struck in the second half after Marcus Rashford cancelled out David Silva's opener, ensuring a record-equalling 14th win in a row in the top flight for Pep Guardiola's side.

Much had been made before the game of City's vulnerability from set-pieces and it was a curious quirk of fate to see them triumph at Old Trafford for the second year in a row by virtue of two dead-ball situations.

United took a 40-game unbeaten home run, including a 100 per cent record this season, into the match, but City were the dominant force from the outset and deserved the lead Silva secured in the 43rd minute.Marcus Rashford capitalised on some slack defending to draw United level, but the hosts were punished for failing to clear the lines again nine minutes after the break, as Otamendi finished in style.

United were denied twice at the death by Ederson and the result leaves them with a daunting gap to their neighbours, who look to be on an unstoppable march towards the title after only 16 matches, with Guardiola also enjoying the bragging rights over Jose Mourinho.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, City dominated possession in the early exchanges against a United side who lined up with Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard all in support of striker Romelu Lukaku.

City's first chance fell to Raheem Sterling, who shot straight at David de Gea, before Gabriel Jesus produced a similarly tame finish after surging clear into the penalty area past Marcos Rojo.Jesus incurred the wrath of Mourinho when he went to ground under little contact in the United area, but it was the home support who appeared most frustrated with the half as they watched their side sit deep and offer next to nothing in attack.

De Gea made his first real save of note four minutes before the interval, tipping over Leroy Sane's effort from close range, but it proved a futile piece of agility as City snatched the lead moments later.Lukaku misjudged his header from the resulting corner and the ball fell kindly to Silva, who prodded home from inside the six-yard box.

The goal seemed to spark United into life suddenly, with Martial at last testing Ederson, and they snatched an equaliser in first-half injury time when Rashford pounced on Fabian Delph's failure to clear and slotted home from 12 yards out.

But City regained their lead nine minutes into the second half in remarkably similar fashion to their opening goal. Lukaku's attempted clearance from Silva's free-kick went straight against Chris Smalling and fell to Otamendi, who steered the ball acrobatically into the net.

City's control of the ball showed no sign of waning and De Gea was called upon to make a fine low save to deny Kevin De Bruyne, although Rashford stung the palms of Ederson after another Delph error as Mourinho turned to substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic for hope.

Ederson pulled off a brilliant double save to deny Lukaku and Juan Mata six minutes from time, depriving United of a second equaliser and putting the title race firmly in City's grasp as they became the first side to win 14 consecutive top-flight games in a single season.

Villarreal 0 Barcelona 2: Suarez, Messi restore five-point LaLiga lead

    4732BA7200000578-0-image-a-20_1512941006112.jpg

Goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi gave Barcelona a 2-0 win over 10-man Villarreal on Sunday and restored their five-point lead at the top of LaLiga.

The Uruguay forward struck with 18 minutes to play at the Estadio de la Ceramica before Messi added a simple second, ending a run of back-to-back draws in the top flight for the Catalans and keeping the title race firmly in their hands.

Messi's goal saw him equal the record of 525 goals in all competitions for the same team in one of Europe's top-five leagues, set by Bayern Munich great Gerd Muller.

Barca, held by second-place Valencia and Celta Vigo in their last two games, had not gone three games without a league win for over a year but found it difficult to break down Javier Calleja's side.

Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique each hit the woodwork but Marc-Andre ter Stegen was called upon to keep the home side at bay, before Raba's red card in the second half left Villarreal up against it.

The visitors had been short of their best but one moment of slick passing carved open the Villarreal defence and allowed Luis Suarez to break the deadlock, and Messi made the points safe with seven minutes remaining. The victory again moves Barca five points clear of Valencia, six above Atletico Madrid and eight ahead of champions Real Madrid, all three of whom won this weekend.

Pique hit the bar after only three minutes with a header from Denis Suarez's corner, though Ter Stegen had to be alert to deny Roberto Soriano from close range in an evenly contested first half-hour.

A Messi free-kick forced a save from Sergio Asenjo - back in the team in LaLiga for the first time this season after recovering from his latest knee injury - and the Argentina star flashed another shot narrowly wide, but it was a pretty subdued display from the leaders in the opening half.

Villarreal were not looking too stretched by Barca's approach play and Valverde responded by bringing off Denis Suarez for Paco Alcacer just before the hour mark, with the Catalans shifting to more of a 4-3-1-2.Alcacer almost made an immediate impact, connecting with Jordi Alba's low cross only to be denied by Asenjo six yards from goal, before Messi sent another Alba pass inches wide of the right-hand post.

As Barca suddenly looked to be in the ascendancy, Raba handed them a huge advantage, lunging into a challenge on Sergio Busquets on the edge of the visitors' penalty area and catching him on the foot with raised studs, prompting referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea to brandish a straight red card.

Luis Suarez was inches from capitalising on that man advantage seven minutes later, nudging Alba's cross onto the right-hand post with an outstretched boot, but the Uruguayan at last made the telling impact in the 72nd minute.Messi started a quick passing move that saw the former Liverpool striker play a one-two with Alcacer, round Asenjo and slot home for his seventh league goal of the season.

Manu Trigueros brought a flying stop out of Ter Stegen but Villarreal killed off their own hopes of a comeback with eight minutes left. A loose pass allowed Busquets to feed Messi on the edge of the area and the Argentina star burst into space and slotted the ball past Asenjo, securing a 12th win in 15 league games this season.
