Real Sociedad 2 Barcelona 4: Messi claims new landmark as Anoeta curse is broken

    4824FB3A00000578-0-image-a-144_1515966254150.jpg

Lionel Messi set a new goalscoring landmark as Barcelona came from two goals down to beat Real Sociedad 4-2 and break their Anoeta curse.

A stunning late free-kick at the end of an otherwise quiet outing from the Argentina star made him the top league goalscorer for one club in any of Europe's top five divisions, surpassing Gerd Muller with his 366th LaLiga goal.

The Catalan giants had returned winless from their last seven trips to Sociedad in the top flight and were primed for further disappointment after falling behind to Willian Jose's 11th-minute header. Juanmi doubled the hosts' lead with a heavily deflected finish after a superb assist from Sergio Canales, but that only served to stir Barca into life and Paulinho reduced the deficit before half-time.Within five minutes of the restart the scores were level as Luis Suarez finished brilliantly for his 12th league goal of the season.

Suarez then grabbed a second 19 minutes from time after goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli's poor clearance proved costly for Eusebio Sacristan's men, with Messi putting the icing on the cake.

The result restores Barca's nine-point lead at the summit, elevating them 19 ahead of champions Real Madrid, breaking an 11-year spell without a league win at Anoeta in the process.

Barca – without the services of injured new signing Philippe Coutinho – started brightly and Suarez was denied by the onrushing Rulli at the end of a determined run into the Sociedad box, while the keeper also had to be alert to keep out Sergi Roberto soon after. But the visitors found themselves behind as Willian Jose headed Xabi Prieto's searching cross into the ground and over Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Barca struggled to mount any meaningful response, with their play uncharacteristically sloppy and Sociedad looking the more confident team on the ball. The home side thought they had a second when Willian Jose's deflected shot nestled into the back of Ter Stegen's net, but Ivan Rakitic had been fouled beforehand.

Their disappointment was soon assuaged as another goal did arrive, Juanmi collecting a wonderful lofted throughball from Canales before driving his effort off Roberto and into the net.Ernesto Valverde's men got back into the contest six minutes before the break, Suarez laying on a simple finish for Paulinho.

Barca threatened early in the second half, with Messi rounding compatriot Rulli, who recovered well to divert the ball behind for a corner that came to nothing. But Rulli was helpless to prevent Suarez's excellent equaliser, which he curled home side-footed from just inside the box.

Valverde introduced Ousmane Dembele in place of Paulinho just past the hour mark as he sought to get a firm grip on the contest, which was by then being played in sodden conditions.Sociedad sent a timely reminder of their remaining threat when Willian Jose climbed well to connect with a header, but his attempt was wayward.

The turnaround was complete in the 71st minute, Suarez calmly tucking in his second after Rulli's lazy-looking clearance was headed into the Uruguayan's path by Thomas Vermaelen. There was still time for Messi to create yet more history, sending a world-class free-kick into the net to make certain of the points.

Messi breaks Muller goal record with his 366th league goal for Barcelona

Lionel Messi has broken Gerd Muller's long-standing record for the most league goals scored for the same club in Europe's top five divisions.

The Barcelona superstar, who equalled the tally while making his 400th LaLiga appearance for the Calatan giants against Levante last weekend, netted his 366th goal in Spain's top flight during the 4-2 win over Real Sociedad on Sunday.Messi's left-footed free-kick from 25 yards saw him overtake Muller's haul of 365 Bundesliga strikes for Bayern Munich.

Germany great Muller set the previous record while representing Bayern between 1964 and 1979, scoring his 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga matches.
Messi has been in irresistible form for Barca this season, scoring 16 goals and providing eight assists in LaLiga as the club have surged to the top of the table.Barca's win over Sociedad took them nine points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, and 19 clear of eternal rivals Real.

Messi and his team-mates have yet to lose in the league this season, despite being shorn of Neymar in the summer - the Brazilian joining PSG for a world-record €222 million fee.

Mourinho tells Conte to stop acting like a victim

Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho have both claimed their war of words is over, but the Manchester United and Chelsea bosses have aimed fresh digs at each other over the last two days.

Conte called Mourinho a "little man" earlier this month after the United boss brought up his suspension as part of a match-fixing investigation while he was with Juventus.

Mourinho went on to describe his feeling toward Conte as "contempt" on Friday, with the Chelsea boss responding in kind on Saturday while claiming he was done with the feud.

Now, Mourinho aimed another jab at the Italian, claiming on Sunday that he didn't start the bickering and that Conte should stop acting like he's the victim. “When I start [feuds] I take the responsibilities of that, and I’ve started [them] many times," Mourinho said.

"When I don’t start it’s quite funny for me to see other people on the other side acting like victims when they’re not the victims. But, really, I don’t enjoy. That’s why for me it’s over.”Conte also has referenced Mourinho's past shots at Claudio Ranieri, before the Portuguese wore a shirt with the former Leicester City boss' name on it when he was sacked.

Mourinho now admits that at times the feuds with other managers have been his fault, but says the Ranieri instance just proves that he's willing to be the bigger man when he knows he's in the wrong. “Yeah, sometimes it’s my fault,” Mourinho said of the rows.

“Sometimes it’s other managers’ fault. In my case, when I think it’s my fault and I should behave in a different way I’m the first one to apologise, like I did with Ranieri when I had the chance.“That’s when our relations went from bad to good and from good to very good, because I was man enough to apologise.”

Mourinho and Conte will meet face to face on February 25, when Manchester United and Chelsea face off in the Premier League.

:love:Man Utd to offer De Gea new deal - Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Manchester United will offer David De Gea a new contract.

United have an option to extend De Gea's current contract, which runs until 2019, by a further year, and Mourinho has confirmed that the club will trigger that clause while also attempting to negotiate longer terms with the Spain international.

“It’s obvious that we’re not going to let the option [in De Gea’s contract] disappear,” he said, per the Daily Telegraph. “A goalkeeper like he is, and obviously a club that wants to be better and better and better, we are not going to let that year option go away.

“But obviously we are going to try [to extend his contract]. Mr Woodward [Ed Woodward, the club's executive vice chairman] is not on holiday. He barely has holidays. Of course he’s going to try to give him a contract that keeps him here for much longer than that option that, of course, we are going to execute.”De Gea has been ever present for United in the Premier League this season, conceding just 16 goals in 22 games.

The 27-year-old, arguably United's most important player, has been linked with moves away from the club, however, and almost joined Real Madrid in 2015, when a deal worth £29 million would have seen De Gea move to Spain and Keylor Navas join United. However, the transfer fell through at the eleventh hour — both clubs denied blame for the fiasco — and De Gea stayed at Old Trafford, though he was again linked with a move to the Bernabeu last summer.

When pressed on whether negotiations had been initiated between the club and De Gea, he replied: “I don’t know. I just trust the board and the work they do. I don’t negotiate players, I don’t discuss numbers and contracts. I just say what is obvious. Anyone of you would say the same — David is to keep.”

Man City pull plug on Alexis Sanchez deal as Man Utd close in

Manchester City have pulled the plug on their pursuit of Alexis Sanchez, leaving rivals Manchester United with a clear run at tying up a shock deal for the Arsenal man in the coming days, Goal understands.

City made it clear on Friday that they would walk away from the deal if the total price of a January move did not suit them, and that is exactly what has happened.Goal has learned that the final straw came when Alexis’ agent, Fernando Felicevich, informed City in the past 48 hours that United are willing to pay more money in both wages and extra fees.

City have worked closely with Felicevich for the best part of a year and had agreed the terms of a January transfer with him in recent weeks, and they were less than impressed to learn of his demands for more money at the eleventh hour. City's response was curt: we are no longer interested.

The Blues had initially been unsure whether United's interest was genuine and they had still been willing to negotiate with the Gunners and Felicevich, but changed their minds upon learning that a move to Old Trafford is a real possibility.

Pep Guardiola is believed to be on board with the decision to no longer pursue Alexis, despite making the forward his No.1 target throughout last summer, and who he saw as the ideal candidate to help boost City’s hunt for an unprecedented quadruple in the final months of the season.

The Chilean has indicated that he would be open to joining United in the past few days, and Guardiola is happy to move on because he now believes the 29-year-old is not 100 per cent committed to playing for him.City's chances of reaching a cut-price deal with Arsenal began to look bleak when United entered the fray and made it known that they are willing to match Arsenal’s asking price and strike a deal with Felicevich.

Their best hope was for Alexis to stick to his desire to play for Guardiola, and to tell his employers and representatives that he would not move to Old Trafford under any circumstances. That has not happened, however, as the player has indicated that he is so desperate to leave Arsenal that he would be happy to go to United if City cannot or will not reach an agreement.

That perceived lack of conviction has persuaded Guardiola not to pressure his bosses, sporting director Txiki Begiristain and CEO Ferran Soriano, to continue negotiating with Felicevich and Arsenal. That now leaves United as clear favourites to sign Alexis in a shock deal.

Goal reported throughout last summer that Alexis wanted to leave Arsenal and would not sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium. He first agreed personal terms with City in May, and rejected advances from Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich as he set his sights on a reunion with Guardiola, with whom he worked at Barcelona.

City made Alexis their priority target and agreed a £60m deal with Arsenal on deadline day which eventually collapsed due to the Gunners’ failure to sign a replacement. Alexis had signed his City contract but it was never submitted to the FA as a result of the agreement with Arsenal becoming void.

The Blues then agreed fresh terms with the Chilean towards the end of 2017, covering potential moves either in January or the summer. They had initially planned to wait until the end of the season, but changed their stance when Gabriel Jesus injured knee ligaments on New Year’s Eve.Goal revealed last Sunday that City and Arsenal had opened talks about a January move, but that the Premier League leaders were reluctant to match the Gunners’ £35m asking price.

News of United’s rival interest emerged on Thursday but even high-ranking City officials were unaware if it was genuine or a ploy on behalf of either Arsenal or Felicevich, in a bid to get the Blues to stump up more cash. Either way, senior sources insisted they were not in the slightest bit concerned about the chances of United gazumping them.

But that now appears to be the most likely scenario after City learned that United are serious in their interest and that the player and agent are on board with the move.It is understood PSG made another approach to the player at the start of January but were put off by the demands of Felicevich, which proved to be a decisive sticking point for City.

While the Blues are not willing to up their offer, United are said to view the opportunity to sign a top-level player for a reduced fee as something which cannot be passed up.Having been in contact with Alexis’ camp over the past few days, and with City now out of the picture barring the most dramatic of u-turns, the Red Devils will look to conclude a deal within the 48-hour timeframe that Arsene Wenger suggested on Sunday evening.

"I don't master the rhythm of it, but it could happen today, tomorrow or not at all," said Wenger."It will be decided in the next 48 hours."

Alexis' family arrived in England on Saturday and he was left out of Arsenal's squad for Sunday's defeat at Bournemouth.

The move still hinges on the Gunners’ ability to sign another player, and potentially to also bring in Henrikh Mkhitaryan as part of the deal to take Alexis to United.Sources close to Bordeaux forward Malcom have told Goal this weekend that a move to the Premier League in January is “very possible” , with Arsenal leading the race ahead of United and Tottenham.

Arsenal close in on £44m Malcom signing

Arsenal are closing in on the £44 million signing of Bordeaux forward Malcom, with further meetings with the player’s representatives planned for Monday.Goal understands the 20-year-old has been earmarked as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez following his impressive performances in Ligue 1 this season.

Malcom has scored seven goals and laid on five more for his team-mates in the French top-flight in 2017-18, with Manchester United and Tottenham having also shown an interest in bringing him to the Premier League.

Raul Sanllehi, Arsenal’s new head of football operations, has been heavily involved in the negotiations despite not formally starting his role at the club until February 1.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger refused to deny his interest in the Brazilian after Arsenal’s defeat at Bournemouth, but said there was "nothing concrete" and that "it’s better he didn’t come out on any specific name".
