Stoke City 0 Manchester City 2: David Silva inspires routine win in Aguero's absence

    4A216B4B00000578-0-image-a-54_1520887158939.jpg

David Silva scored both goals as Manchester City made light work of Stoke City in a routine 2-0 win at the bet365 Stadium, despite being without the injured Sergio Aguero.

Pep Guardiola was unable to select Aguero due to a knee injury, but the Argentina star's absence was hardly noticed as City edged a little closer to the Premier League title, with Silva stealing the show.

Any chance of struggling Stoke causing an upset looked over as early as the 10th minute, as Silva opened the scoring with aplomb after good work from Raheem Sterling, back from five games out with a hamstring injury.

The league leaders doubled their advantage early in the second half – Silva again providing a good finish after a well-worked move involving Gabriel Jesus, starting his first Premier League game of the year.

Stoke threatened to pull one back just after the hour, but Bruno Martins Indi shot over from close range and from there they looked devoid of hope as the visitors tightened their grip.

City were unable to add further goals despite their dominance, but it mattered little as they re-established a 16-point gap at the summit and secured a first league double over Stoke since 1998-99, when they were both in the third tier.

Much was made pre-game about Stoke's need to keep things tight and ensure they were still in the game during the final 20 minutes in order to maximise the impact of their partisan support. But after just 10 minutes, they found themselves trailing.

Jesus released Sterling up the right flank and he played a low first-time cross into the danger zone, where Silva arrived to guide home in expert fashion.Stoke nearly levelled soon after, but Badou Ndiaye's 20-yard effort was deflected agonisingly wide of the bottom-left corner following fine play out wide by Xherdan Shaqiri.

Although the visitors remained on top, they nearly shot themselves in the foot nine minutes before the break – Ederson tipping the ball on to the roof of his net after Kyle Walker cleared a long ball back towards his own goal.Jack Butland had to be similarly alert a few minutes later, getting down to his left to push Fernandinho's long-range strike away.

Butland was helpless five minutes after the interval, though, as Silva found Jesus and the Brazilian played a looping return pass into the area for the Spaniard, who neatly tucked away despite the goalkeeper approaching.Fernandinho went close to adding a third a few moments later, bursting through the middle, linking with Kevin De Bruyne and then shooting into the side-netting.

Paul Lambert introduced Peter Crouch from the bench in the 63rd minute and he made an immediate impact, heading down a free-kick to Martins Indi, who blasted over from about eight yards.

Sterling should have rounded things off 12 minutes from time when he pounced upon an error after a drop-ball incident and charged through on goal, but he tried to round Butland instead of squaring to Jesus and that allowed Ndiaye to make a last-ditch tackle.

    Southampton sack manager Mauricio Pellegrino

Southampton have parted ways with manager Mauricio Pellegrino, the club confirmed on Monday. After 30 matches the club sit 17th in the Premier League and face a relegation fight in the closing run with Crystal Palace and Stoke both just one point back. A 3-0 loss to Newcastle on Saturday seems to have been the final straw for Pellegrino, who joined the club last summer on a three-year contract.

"Southampton Football Club can today confirm that it has parted company with first team manager Mauricio Pellegrino," read a statement from the club."Assistant manager Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first team coach Xavier Tamarit have also parted company with the club."We would like to place on record our thanks to Mauricio, Carlos and Xavier for their efforts during their time with Southampton, and wish them well for the future.

"The club will look to appoint a new management team as soon as possible, with the search for a replacement already underway."Pellegrino was appointed at St Mary's Stadium in June as a replacement for the sacked Claude Puel, who had led the club to the CarabaoCup final and an eighth-place finish in his one season in charge, and has since been appointed by Leicester City.

The Frenchman returned to his former club in December and oversaw a 4-1 win for the Foxes.
Under Pellegrino, Southampton have not won a home Premier League fixture since November and their only victory since then came in the form of a 3-2 triumph at fellow strugglers West Brom.

Leicester City are ready for Chelsea, says Kelechi Iheanacho

Kelechi Iheanacho has declared Leicester City’s readiness for their FA Cup quarter-final tie against Chelsea.

The 21-year-old scored and assisted with another after coming in from the bench to help Claude Puel’s men cruise to a 4-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.Buoyed by the impressive display, the former Manchester City player is looking to have a similar display against Antonio Conte’s men on Sunday.

“That’s what I need – to get involved and to help the team to get something out of the game. I got a great assist and a great goal today [Saturday],” Iheanacho told LCFC TV.“We’re looking forward to playing against Chelsea. They’re a good side, a strong side. We’ll just keep working hard in training and we’ll be ready for them.

“We’ve had a hard time getting some draws. Today will give us a boost for the next game against Chelsea.“We’re back to winning ways now. We just have to keep winning, keep strong and keep working hard to make sure we stick to those wins.”

The forward has now scored six goals in 21 appearances, including four in the FA Cup since joining the Foxes in August 2017.

:(Manchester United midfielder Carrick to retire at end of season

Michael Carrick will call time on his professional career at the end of this season, the Manchester United and England midfielder has confirmed. The 36-year-old club captain has featured sparingly for United this season, having been sidelined earlier in the campaign due to a heart scare.

He returned to action last month but, speaking at a news conference ahead of Tuesday's Champions League last-16 match against Sevilla, Carrick confirmed the current campaign will be his last."There comes a time when, as much as you don't like, your body tells you it's time to stop playing football," he said."That's pretty much where I'm at, which is fine."

In January, United boss Jose Mourinho said he expected Carrick to retire at the end of 2017-18 and join the Old Trafford coaching staff – a move the player himself acknowledges as his likely next step.

"It's kind of being sorted out, we're still talking about it to be honest. But it's looking likely, yeah."Carrick joined United from Tottenham for £18million in 2006 and has played 463 times for the Red Devils.

A graduate of West Ham's youth academy alongside the likes of Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Rio Ferdinand, Carrick went on to win five Premier League titles under Alex Ferguson.

He became a Champions League winner when United saw off Chelsea on penalties in Moscow in 2008 and, although he lost subsequent finals in Europe's top competition against Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, last season's Europa League triumph completed an individual clean sweep of major domestic and European club trophies.

Carrick, who was capped 34 times by England, underwent a procedure to correct an irregular heart rhythm, having initially felt unwell during the EFL Cup win over Burton Albion last September. Now back in action, he is happy to be retiring on his own terms.

"It started in the Burton game and then happened again in training," Carrick added, discussing his health problem."I'm clear now, it took a bit of time to get over. There were two or three times when I wondered whether it was worth still playing, but I soon got over that."I understood that I wouldn't be playing as many games, but I've been training hard and trying to keep fit. I wanted to finish on my own terms."

Carragher suspended by Sky Sports after spitting at fan

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has been suspended by Sky Sports after a video emerged of him spitting at a Manchester United supporter.

The ex-England international was forced to apologise on Sunday after footage of him spitting into a car, which contained a 14-year-old girl, came to light in the aftermath of United's win over their great rivals at Old Trafford.Carragher has become a staple of Sky's coverage of the Premier League since his retirement in 2013.

But he is now set to spend some time off screen - starting with the 'Monday Night Football' show surrounding Manchester City's trip to Stoke City - after the corporation released a statement regarding his actions.

"Sky takes this matter extremely seriously and strongly condemns Jamie's actions, we have made that clear to him in person today and suspended him from his duties," it read. "It falls well below the standards we expect of our people.”

Carragher himself appeared on Sky News in the wake of his suspension, saying: "You can't condone that behaviour in any way shape or form."[It was] a moment of madness, it is difficult to explain. Watching those clips back it feels like almost an out of body thing. A moment of madness for four or five seconds.

"You're actually thinking to yourself, 'Why did you react like that?' That's part of being a public figure. I just have no excuse. I'm devastated for the family involved and my own family."My biggest regret is for the 14-year-old to be caught in the middle of this altercation with the father. That devastates me a little bit more than anything else."I can't go back, hopefully they accept [my apology]."

Asked to explain why he should remain with the broadcaster, Carragher, who said he has not offered his resignation, replied: "There's no doubt what I have done is disgusting, I'm getting vilified and rightly so. "What I would hope for the public who have known me for almost 25 years in the public eye is that five seconds of madness will not take over everything I've done now.

"Hopefully going forward I can show the real me. I don't think that is a real representation of me."

:(Pogba misses Man Utd training to cast doubt over Sevilla showing

Paul Pogba was forced to sit out Manchester United training on Monday, casting doubt over his involvement in their Champions League clash with Sevilla.

The France international midfielder was a late withdrawal from the Red Devils fold to face Liverpool in Premier League competition on Saturday.A knock picked up in training kept him out of that match, although United were able to pick up a 2-1 victory in his absence.

It is now possible that will also miss a crucial European fixture on Tuesday, with Jose Mourinho in the process of finalising his plans for the second leg of a last-16 showdown with Sevilla.

The Portuguese had told reporters on Pogba’s possible availability following a win over Liverpool: "I don't know."He's downstairs now and I will go and speak with him. The injury? It was contact with a player in the last minute of the training session [on Friday].

"If I finished the session one minute before it wouldn't have happened."Pogba has endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford of late, with his every move being dissected in minute detail.

Mourinho has opted to bench him at times, sparking debate regarding his future and value to the United cause, while several weeks were missed earlier in the season with a hamstring problem. The 24-year-old is now being denied the opportunity to play his way back into form, with another spell on the sidelines being taken in at the worst possible time.

The big games keep on coming for United at the moment, with a continental tussle with Sevilla set to be followed by an FA Cup quarter-final meeting with Brighton.

It remains to be seen what role, if any, Pogba plays in those fixtures as is going to be short of match sharpness. He is not the only player posing selection posers for Mourinho, though, with Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind also nursing knocks which kept them out of United’s latest training session.

Whoever makes the Red Devils selection in midweek will do so knowing that goals are required, with their two-legged tie with Sevilla currently locked at 0-0.

Manchester United midfieder Scott McTominay has earned his first Scotland call-up for their upcoming friendlies with Costa Rica and Hungary.

The 21-year-old is eligible for both Scotland and England, with his emergence under Jose Mourinho leading to much conjecture over which nation he should choose to play for.

Lancaster-born McTominay has previously stated he sees his international future with the country of his father and reportedly pledged to represent Scotland this month following a meeting Alex McLeish.

And he is in line to make his debut for Scotland after McLeish included him as one of six new faces in his first squad since being re-appointed as manager in February.Jon McLaughlin, Barry Douglas, Dylan McGeouch, Scott McKenna and Oliver McBurnie also receive their first call-ups.

Gattuso: AC Milan aren't going to Arsenal for a holiday

Gennaro Gattuso insists AC Milan can still progress in the Europa League, despite a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash.Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Aaron Ramsey in the San Siro mean Milan will have to score at least twice in north London when they visit the Emirates.

The result was Milan's first loss of the year, and they bounced back in dramatic fashion in Serie A, beating Genoa 1-0 on Sunday thanks to an injury-time Andre Silva goal.

In the aftermath of the game, Gattuso expressed his pride at his side's reaction, and insists they are not heading to London on a sightseeing trip.

"After Thursday, I heard a lot of nattering that you hear in the pub, about how we were lacking something physically, yet here we are coping right through to the 95th minute," Gattuso told Mediaset.

"We just got that game wrong against a strong Arsenal side. We realised that and today we responded."We've still got a 30 percent chance of going through and we're not going to London for a holiday. We need to respect our glorious shirts.

"The league table is finally looking pretty for us. Our objective is there in front of us, but we've got to take things game by game."I was a bit worried because we'd not lost in two-and-a-half months until Arsenal so we were afraid we might struggle after going so long without losing, but the team responded well."

Arsenal beat Watford 3-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, ending a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats.

:love::love:Mata is the glue holding Man Utd together - Neville

Juan Mata has emerged as “a very important player” at Manchester United, says Gary Neville, with the Spaniard capable of being the “glue” which holds Jose Mourinho’s side together. The Red Devils have enjoyed a productive 2017-18 campaign, but they have not always been as consistent as they would like.

Mourinho has also faced accusations of being overly defensive at times, with United considered to place too much emphasis on keeping things tight and not enough on working through the lines.

Mata, though, is being billed as the man to aid that cause, with the World Cup winner seen as a playmaker who can allow others to flourish by linking midfield and attack.

Former Red Devils defender Neville told his podcast for Sky Sports: "There’s signs in the last two games that there’s a team there and Juan Mata’s become more important to connect the team.

"It looks like you’ve got [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial, [Romelu] Lukaku but they haven’t got that glue that just knits it together. Mata looks like he might become a very important player.

"Michael Carrick, [Paul] Pogba has sort of got the ability to connect back to front but Mata certainly has got the composure to hold the ball and allow those players to make their runs so they can get up the pitch and get into a point where they can play one-on-one.

"They need to be one-on-one. You see with Rashford [against Liverpool], [Alexis] Sanchez, Lukaku. Get them one-on-one around the edge of the box, they are probably as good as you are going to get."However, to get the ball into those situations, as many times as possible with quality, you need someone to put the ball there to them and Mata does that really well.”

Rashford produced a match-winning performance for United in their latest outing against Liverpool, as he celebrated his return to Mourinho’s starting XI with a brace in a 2-1 win.

The England international rightly dominated the headlines on the back of that display, but Mata put in another workmanlike performance to help the Red Devils to all three points – with his afternoon almost topped off by another spectacular bicycle kick against old adversaries.

United will be looking for him to keep things ticking over in the coming weeks, with important fixtures across the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League approaching.

Rashford doesn't need Man Utd absence explained by Mourinho

Marcus Rashford says he is mature enough to need no explanation from Jose Mourinho for his absence from a Manchester United starting XI.

The 20-year-old forward has been a regular in his manager’s plans this season, but has not always been used from the off.Heading into a meeting with arch-rivals Liverpool on Saturday, Rashford had not started a Premier League fixture since Boxing Day.

He was, however, returned to the fold for the crunch clash at Old Trafford and justified that inclusion with an impressive performance as he netted a match-winning brace.

Rashford insists that he never questioned his benching during a testing a run, telling reporters when quizzed on whether he had asked Mourinho to explain his selections: “He doesn’t have to. When you are younger than I am and you are learning the game I think you do need it.“But my experiences from the past mean I understand that’s part of the game. There are only 11 players that can start – it’s just one of those things.

“It is something you have been through before. If it happens again you will probably deal with it better than the first time it happened to you. It is just another experience.

“In football you are going to be up, you’re going to be down. The most important thing is sticking together as a squad. Everyone turns up every day for training, we all work hard, we all do the necessary things."We are all in it together. Sometimes you are in the team, sometimes you are not in the team.”

Rashford and United are approaching the end of their second season under Mourinho’s guidance, and the England international believes he now has a better understanding of how the Portuguese works and what he expects from certain individuals.

He said: “Right now I’m probably not learning the most on the pitch. It is in training where I’m doing most of my learning.“What am I learning? There’s lots of things. It is just the all-round game is starting to become more clear. Things this manager wants is becoming more clear to me. The more you do that, the easier the results come on the pitch.

“You have to take it into the game and today it worked. Personally, taking the confidence from this game into the next games is important.”

Rashford’s deadly double against Liverpool has seen him hit a new personal high in terms of goals scored across any given season, with his tally for 2017-18 taken to 12.

He will be hoping for many more to come, with United still chasing down a runner-up finish in the Premier League, FA Cup glory and the Champions League crown.

Chelsea legend Drogba reveals retirement plan after turning 40

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has announced that he is to retire at the end of an upcoming campaign with Phoenix Rising. The iconic Ivorian striker will take part in the 2018 USL season, but will then hang up his boots.

Drogba turned 40 on Sunday and feels that the time is right to walk away after more than two decades in the game.

He told Telefoot: "It's really a pleasure for me to play."I started late at the top level. I really enjoy playing. I like my role of owner-player a lot. I'm surrounded by a lot of youngsters, and I like passing my know-how on to them. But this season is the last. I'm 40, it's time now."Drogba made his debut for Le Mans at the age of 20 in 1998.He would go on to take in spells with Guingamp and Marseille before joining Chelsea for £24 million in the summer of 2004.

Over the course of two spells at Stamford Bridge he plundered over 150 goals while securing four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

A glittering career has also taken him to Shanghai Shenhua, Galatasaray and MLS side Montreal Impact.Age has finally caught up with him, but the Drogba dynasty looks set to continue as eldest son Isaac recently linked up with the Guingamp youth academy.

Drogba could also return to France at some stage, with a non-playing position at Marseille appealing to a man who has achieved just about everything on the field. He added: "We'll have to see what is offered. I'm always ready to help.

"In any case, Marseille are showing good things this year. Rudi Garcia's project is taking shape, they're building a team with young players. It's excellent to stay in the top three with a team like that. As a fan, I have a lot of faith in them.”

:(Manchester United 1 Sevilla 2 (1-2 agg): Ben Yedder brace dumps Mourinho's men out

    4A2A925D00000578-0-image-a-26_1521032444862.jpg

Wissam Ben Yedder came off the bench to score the decisive goals as Sevilla moved into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a stunning 2-1 away win at Manchester United.

At a restless Old Trafford, United never got out of first gear and Sevilla, having dominated the opening leg at home without finding a way to beat David de Gea in a goalless draw, deservedly progressed.

When Ben Yedder came off the bench with less than 20 minutes to play, the game was finely balanced with both sides aware the first goal would be decisive.

And it proved to be the case as Ben Yedder made an immediate impact, collecting a pass from Ever Banega to smash in a low finish.

With United reeling, Ben Yedder soon added his eighth goal of this season's Champions League, De Gea unable to claw out the striker's looping header.Jose Mourinho had already played his trump card, bringing on Paul Pogba, who was only fit enough for the bench, and United stumbled to a shock home defeat despite Romelu Lukaku sparking a grandstand finish.

Lukaku blazed wide in the second minute after a smart one-two with Jesse Lingard created an early opportunity for United.

Joaquin Correa flashed a near-post header narrowly over the crossbar from Banega's left-wing corner, with Luis Muriel then wasteful after Eric Bailly's sloppy pass played Sevilla in.

Muriel dragged another decent opening wide of the far post after Pablo Sarabia sent the winger through on goal, with Sevilla dominating the opening half-hour.
United finally worked a clear opening in the 38th minute, a powerful drive from Marouane Fellaini beaten away by Sergio Rico after Alexis Sanchez turned a one-two into the path of the Belgium international, who was making his first start of 2018.

Bailly's superbly-timed challenge denied Correa in the box, then Rico had to make a smart save down to his right to turn a snapshot from Jesse Lingard around the post. With United lacking tempo on the ball and invention in midfield, Mourinho turned to Pogba on the hour-mark, the midfielder replacing Fellaini.United continued to be sloppy on the ball, Pogba curling a 72nd-minute effort narrowly wide, but it was a Sevilla substitute who came up with the opener.

Ben Yedder had been on the pitch just 87 seconds when he controlled a smart pass from Banega, took a touch to steady himself and drilled a fine finish inside De Gea's left-hand post. Before United could respond it was 2-0 and game over, chaotic defending allowing Ben Yedder to divert a goalbound header that a desperate De Gea was unable to stop crossing the line.

Lukaku sparked a late fightback by turning in a Marcus Rashford corner but United could not match Sevilla's clinical edge in front of goal. De Gea denied Ben Yedder his hat-trick in added time, but it mattered little as Vincenzo Montella celebrated having masterminded a famous victory for his side.

Roma 1 Shakhtar Donetsk 0 (2-2 agg): Dzeko edges Italians through on away goals

    4A29FA2400000578-0-image-a-86_1520989139617.jpg

A second-half Edin Dzeko strike earned Roma a 1-0 Champions League last-16 second-leg win over Shakhtar Donetsk, enough to narrowly progress on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw.

Cengiz Under's goal and a string of Alisson saves in a 2-1 away first-leg defeat had kept Roma in the tie, and Eusebio Di Francesco's men edged to victory in the return to reach the quarter-finals despite a dismal display in which Dzeko's winner was scarcely deserved.

Indeed, despite needing only a draw to themselves reach the last eight on Wednesday, this was no backs-to-the-wall job for Paulo Fonseca's Shakhtar as they sought to enjoy themselves at Stadio Olimpico.

An assured away performance was led by Manchester City target Fred as Shakhtar had the better of the opening 45 minutes, pressing the Serie A side when out of possession and then attacking at speed.Chances were few and far between, though, and a lack of cutting edge in the final third was ruthlessly punished by Dzeko seven minutes after half-time.

Shakhtar's desperation for the away goal they now required left gaps in defence and Ivan Ordets was dismissed for halting a late Roma breakaway, Alisson holding on for a fourth consecutive home Champions League clean sheet to seal the hosts a place in the draw for the last eight.

It took Dzeko just 22 seconds to work Andriy Pyatov for the first time, but Shakhtar would not bow easily to the hosts' early pressure and were soon knocking the ball around with confidence in the Roma half.

Alessandro Florenzi flicked a risky backwards header just wide of his own goal and a nervous home crowd witnessed the visitors maintaining a level of control throughout the first half, Pyatov intercepting when Aleksandar Kolarov led a rare Roma foray.

Taison flashed a 25-yard effort over the top, before Federico Fazio recovered in time to force Facundo Ferreyra wide having cheaply given up possession to his fellow Argentinian.Kolarov then crucially swept the ball away from Ferreyra's toe inside the Roma box as the sides went in level at the break.

Roma did not initially improve from the restart but, when the Shakhtar defence switched off the first time, a clear chance finally fell for Dzeko and he made no mistake.

Kevin Strootman hooked a hopeful pass forward to set his team-mate away, Dzeko in the clear and reaching the ball ahead of Pyatov to prod a finish through the goalkeeper's legs.

Diego Perotti fired straight at Pyatov as Roma chased a second and Dzeko then almost struck again with a wonderful curling shot that just faded wide, before Shakhtar redoubled their efforts.

Fred recycled the ball and Taison danced by challenges, but they could not muster the necessary response and tempers flared as Ordets tugged back Dzeko to see red with 11 minutes remaining, Ferreyra clashing with a ball boy to earn just a yellow as Roma held on.

Sevilla hero Ben Yedder: Beating Man Utd the best day of my life

Wissam Ben Yedder revelled in the happiest day of his life after his heroics saw Sevilla knock Manchester United out of the Champions League on Tuesday.Ben Yedder came off the bench to score a double and lift Sevilla to a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the second leg of the last-16 tie.

The result came after a 0-0 draw in the first leg and Ben Yedder was delighted for Spanish side, who reached the quarter-finals in Europe's top club competition for the first time in its current guise."I'm happy, very, very happy. It's a beautiful evening. It's a match that we won't forget in a long time. It's the happiest day of my life," the Frenchman told beIN SPORTS .

"I don't know how to describe my emotion. It's a child's dream to win against big players, big teams like Manchester United. There is a lot of emotion."We will try to savour it all together. We enter the history of the club, this is the first time we go to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. This is exceptional."

Ben Yedder was introduced in the 72nd minute and the forward quickly had an impact, scoring twice in six minutes after coming on.The 27-year-old played down any suggestions he had an issue with Sevilla coach Vincenzo Montella.

"It's complicated, but it's part of life – play, be a substitute, wait for your time.Sometimes patience pays. That's what I always thought," Ben Yedder said."Everyone said there were problems between me and the coach, there is no problem. He made me go home, he trusted me, and I gave him back as I could.

"I always closed my mouth and worked. The coach was happy, I was happy. It's all that matters." Montella was equally delighted with his side's performance, praising his players for giving their all at Old Trafford."I'm very, very happy, it's amazing we've won in this very special stadium," Montella told his post-match news conference."I have some very happy players who have got Sevilla in their soul and in their heart. All the players were fantastic, they played the game of their lives.

"Even though we didn't create chances in the first half we put in a good performance. I felt we were in control possession wise and we gave them very little opportunity to get close to our goal.

"In the second half I'm pleased Ben Yedder turned things around and it was he who made the difference. He was decisive and finished well on two occasions."
