Wenger had no intention of letting 'super popular' Elneny leave Arsenal

Arsene Wenger claims he never had any intention of parting with “super popular” Mohamed Elneny after handing the midfielder fresh terms.

The Egypt international has never been a regular throughout his time at Emirates Stadium, but is considered to be an important squad player. That role had sparked talk that he could be lured away from Arsenal by the promise of more minutes elsewhere, with the 25-year-old admitting to plenty of interest being shown.

Wenger, though, insists a move was never on the cards, with Elneny having been handed a new long-term contract to keep him in north London for the foreseeable future.“He a super-popular player and everybody inside the club loves him,” the long-serving Frenchman told Arsenal TV.

“But he’s not only loved, he is also a very good player and he showed that in Moscow. I never wanted him to leave, I always wanted him to stay. I must say that we had demands for him but he always wanted to stay too.” Elneny impressed all over the field for Arsenal during a Europa League quarter-final second leg clash with CSKA Moscow, with his position being tweaked to meet the demands of the game.

Wenger added on a versatile performer: “In the second half in Moscow he played in defence and then afterwards, when he moved back into the middle of the park, he gave assists. He works hard and is generous. Overall, I think he did very well.
“And I’m very happy [about the red card decision] because I think it was a wise decision and he will be available for Newcastle.”

Elneny was dismissed on his last Premier League outing for Arsenal – in a 3-2 victory over Southampton – but has seen that red card rescinded and a subsequent ban avoided.

Guardiola: League title means more than Champions League

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola insisted winning the Premier League will mean more to him than success in the Champions League following Saturday's victory at Tottenham.

Knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Liverpool Tuesday, City moved a step closer to domestic honours with a 3-1 triumph over Tottenham at Wembley.City's dream of European glory was ended by Premier League rivals Liverpool but goals from Gabriel Jesus, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling against Spurs put Guardiola's side on the cusp of a third league crown.

Guardiola and City will be crowned champions Sunday if neighbours Manchester United surprisingly slip up at home to rock-bottom West Brom and the Spanish boss talked up his team's exploits over the course of a gruelling Premier League campaign following their Champions League exit.

"If you have now 87 points, five games left, it's because we did outstanding when people said it was a big failure what happened last week," Guardiola said."They don't understand absolutely anything about football. "The Champions League is seven games, you can win the Champions League but the league is every three days in the same month.

"I'm sorry but it's much more important what these guys have done the whole season."City are 16 points clear atop the table ahead of United's clash with WBA at Old Trafford.

:yes:Valencia expecting Man Utd to challenge for 'every trophy' in 2018-19

Antonio Valencia has seen improvement from Manchester United this season and expects them to be challenging for “every trophy” in 2018-19.The Red Devils claimed three pieces of silverware during Jose Mourinho’s debut campaign at the helm – with Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League triumphs toasted.

They have just one title to aim at this season, having made the semi-finals of the FA Cup, but are considered to be heading in the right direction.A return to Champions League competition has been made this term, while a Premier League standing looks set to be improved from sixth to second.

Valencia believes that bodes well, telling United Review: "I think it’s positive thoughts throughout when you look back on things."We’ve scored more goals, picked up more points, conceded fewer and I think we’ve played better. You want to take that forward into next season and try to put things right that maybe haven’t gone so well this season and improve upon results in games.

"We want to win even more games and not slip up in the type of the matches where we might have slipped up this season."All that considered, it’s looking good for next season and let’s hope we can be fighting for every trophy that’s available to us."

The mood inside the United camp has been buoyed by their thrilling derby victory over champions-elect Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.Having fought their way back from two goals down to prevail 3-2, the Red Devils have shown that they are capable of competing with the best in the business.

Valencia added: "After the game on Saturday, of course it was a fantastic feeling and, two days later when you come back into training, it still felt brilliant and that great vibe stays with you."You carry it with you into the next training sessions which is what we’ve done.

"I think we’ve done really well in key games. Those good results and performances only serve to motivate us even more for the rest of this season and especially for next season as well."It's like a message that we’re sending to ourselves and it has extra motivation for us. It reinforces the fact we have a great squad, a great team and a strong dressing room, ahead of the next season, which will hopefully be a great one for us."

For now, though, United’s focus remains locked on ending the 2017-18 campaign on a positive note, with league fixtures against West Brom and Bournemouth to come before attention shifts to an FA Cup semi-final clash with Tottenham at Wembley on April 21.

Pogba challenged by Mourinho after Man Utd derby heroics

Jose Mourinho has challenged Paul Pogba to find a level of consistency which allows him to repeat his derby heroics for Manchester United on a more regular basis.

Having faced plenty of criticism heading into a crunch clash with Premier League champions-elect Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, the French midfielder picked the best possible fixture in which to rediscover his spark.

After seeing United fall behind to leave themselves in danger of being unwelcome guests at a raucous title party, Pogba produced a two-goal showing to turn the tie on its head and inspire a stunning 3-2 victory.

Mourinho is not looking for his £89 million record signing to have that kind of impact every time he takes to the field, but he is calling on the 25-year-old to remove the wild fluctuations in form from his game.

The United manager told reporters ahead of a Premier League outing against West Brom: “I’ll tell you what I told him after the match – I don’t expect you to be man of the match every week, I don’t expect you to score two goals every week. But I expect you to be consistent.“So, if you ask me if I’m expecting Paul now to be man of the match every week? No. If I expect him to score goals every match? No.

“But I expect Paul – and I think that’s the challenge he has to put to himself – to keep a certain stability and not to have the good match and the so-so match and the bad match.

“I think he has to try to keep that level of stability, and from that stability of course will appear the special match with the special performance like it happened against City.”

More “special” showings from Pogba before the end of the season should help to bring an end to the distracting transfer talk which continues to follow him around – with Pep Guardiola having revealed that the France international was offered to City in January.

Whatever happens when the window swings open again this summer, it is expected that United will spend big in an effort to close the gap on their noisy neighbours who have dominated the domestic scene in 2017-18.
Mourinho is, however, adamant that they will not live beyond their means and act in a reactionary manner to the dealings of rival outfits who may be prepared to try and buy their way to success. He added: “No. We are not going to spend more than we can. We are not going to do anything crazy.

“We are just trying to improve a little bit more, to give sequence to it. That’s what we are going to try.”

Wolves promoted to Premier League after Fulham draw with Brentford

Wolves' promotion to the Premier League was confirmed on Saturday after Fulham's 1-1 draw with Brentford.

Sitting 12 points clear before the start of Saturday's Championship fixtures, Wolves were waiting on the outcome at Craven Cottage after Cardiff City had moved into second earlier in the day by winning at Norwich City.

Even if Fulham had beaten Brentford at home, a win over Birmingham City on Sunday would have seen Wolves seal their place in the Championship's top two. However, their return to the English top-flight was confirmed earlier than expected, bringing an end to a six-year absence.

It had appeared as though Wolves would have to wait until Sunday to confirm promotion after Fulham took a 70th-minute lead through Aleksandar Mitrovic.

But, in the fourth minute of stoppage-time, Brentford equalised through Neal Maupay to leave Fulham 10 points adrift of Wolves, with only three games to play. Wolves plummeted to League One a year after their relegation from the Premier League but bounced back to the Championship after one season.

They were among the favourites to achieve promotion in 2018 having spent heavily, including signing Porto's Ruben Neves for £15.8 million.Nuno Espirito Santo's team have been top of the table since October 2017 and could wrap up the league title if they beat Birmingham. The Molineux side take on Bolton, Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland in their final three games of the season.

Suarez: Barcelona critics are ignoring merits of La Liga domination

Luis Suarez believes Barcelona are not getting enough credit for their La Liga campaign due to their Champions League exit at the hands of Roma. The Catalans made it a record-breaking 39 games without defeat in Spain's top flight in Saturday's 2-1 win over Valencia, a result that lifts them 14 points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, having played a game more.

The win was also something of a tonic after the criticism of their collapse in Europe on Wednesday, when they lost 3-0 at Roma to go out at the quarter-final stage on away goals.

Suarez, who opened the scoring before Samuel Umtiti's header sealed the win, says the reaction from some of the press and the fans makes it feel as though winning the domestic title almost does not matter.

"Statistics are there to be broken. We knew the fans could be angry, but we're hurting, too. It seems like there's no merit to winning the league, now," he told beIN SPORTS."We've tried to confirm the great league season we're having after the blow of the other day. We were able to get the three points, which is the most important thing.

"It's one more step to completing the objective. It's a good lead and we have to think about the game on Tuesday [against Celta Vigo]."The most important thing was the 1-0, knowing the mood wasn't good, and we saw how it finished."

Meanwhile, it was another productive match for Suarez against Valencia. The striker's goal Saturday was his 10th in all competitions against the club, which is more than he has scored against any club since joining the Catalans.

Suarez's tally was set up by his old Liverpool team-mate Philippe Coutinho – the second time that has happened since Brazil international's move to Barcelona.
Interestingly, that equals the total number of assists Coutinho provided Suarez during their entire time together at Anfield.

'Barca haven't asked about Griezmann, no one has' - Atletico Madrid chief

Antoine Griezmann has been consistently linked with a move to Barcelona for next season, but Atletico Madrid's general manager Clemente Villaverde insists no club has asked for the Frenchman.

Barca will reportedly look to sign another world-class attacker at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, as they continue to bolster their squad following the departure of Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain last August.Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele have already been brought in to help replace the Brazil international, though neither has had a huge impact yet.

Reports in Spain suggest Barca and Griezmann's entourage have already been in contact regarding a move, as Atletico prepare to brace themselves for the player's release clause dropping from €200million to €100m on July 1.

However, Atletico are adamant they have not been in discussions with anyone.
Villaverde told Mundo Deportivo: "At the moment I can say he is a player of Atletico Madrid and I can only talk about facts and realities, not about the future. He has a contract with us.

"Nobody has asked for him. Griezmann is a player of Atletico, and I do not know anything about Barca." Griezmann has played 27 times for Atletico in LaLiga this term, scoring 18 times.
