Sevilla 0 Barcelona 5: Suarez and Messi lead crushing Copa final win

    FbHuXpe.jpg

Barcelona were at their ruthless best as Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi inspired a crushing 5-0 win over Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final, with Andres Iniesta capping what is expected to be his last final in Spanish football with a fine goal.

Spain and Barca icon Iniesta is reportedly set to depart for a Chinese Super League side at the end of the season and he rolled back the years with a fine individual display, while Suarez and Messi led from the front in an emphatic triumph to give Ernesto Valverde his first trophy at the club.

It took less than a quarter of an hour for Barca to break the deadlock through Suarez, rounding off a route-one move. They ultimately went into the break 3-0 up, as Messi fired home and then set up the lethal Suarez for his second, as Sevilla were left looking at a damage limitation job.

And things got worse for them early in the second half. Iniesta, who had earlier hit the crossbar, finished off a brilliant move with a smart finish to mark a momentous occasion in fitting style.Philippe Coutinho then got in on the act, converting a penalty to round off a remarkable evening for Valverde's five-star Barca, who are closing in on a domestic double.

Having seemingly learnt the lesson of their slow start against Sevilla in last month's 2-2 draw in LaLiga, there was nothing slack about Barca this time around, as they quickly suffocated the Andalusians.

As such, there was more than a hint of inevitability about their opening goal in the 14th minute.Spotting Sevilla's defence playing a high line, Jasper Cillessen drilled a long pass over the top for Coutinho to run on to and he squared across the face of goal for Suarez to knock home.

Sevilla responded fairly well, but Barca remained on top and nearly got a second when Iniesta struck the crossbar with a left-footed drive from just outside the area.
They did not have to wait much longer, however, as Jordi Alba cut the ball back to Messi with a clever backheel just after the half-hour mark and the Argentina star emphatically smashed home.

It got even uglier for Sevilla just prior to the break – Messi played a perfectly weighted pass through for Suarez to latch on to and the Uruguayan clinically fired past the helpless David Soria.Barca started the second half rather more relaxed, though they soon clicked back into gear and opened up a four-goal lead.

Iniesta robbed Ever Banega of possession before exchanging passes with Messi on the edge of the area, rounding Soria and finding the net from a tight angle.

Former Barca youngster Sandro Ramirez provided a little extra spark in the Sevilla attack after his half-time introduction and should have got a consolation in the 64th minute, but after a lungbusting run he shot straight at Cillessen. Clement Lenglet, who has been tipped to join Barca for next season, then handled in the penalty area with 21 minutes to go and Coutinho coolly slotted home the resulting spot-kick.

The Barca support were given one last reason to cheer as they gave the substituted Iniesta a standing ovation as he left the pitch, with their Sevilla counterparts joining in as the Wanda Metropolitano showed its appreciation for one of the greatest midfielders of recent times.

Manchester City 5 Swansea City 0: Guardiola's champions turn on the style

    4B6EC54100000578-5644249-image-a-78_1524412822217.jpg

Manchester City turned on the style in their first match since being confirmed Premier League champions, as Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne led the way in a 5-0 win over Swansea City.

Having already wrapped up the title, motivation had been highlighted as a potential problem for City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, but Pep Guardiola's men produced a professional display befitting of their remarkable campaign, sweeping Swansea aside in straightforward fashion.Although a 2-0 lead famously proved inadequate recently against Manchester United, City never looked like throwing victory away against a far inferior Swansea side.

Sterling played a key role in those two early goals, helping set up David Silva's opener before finding the net himself soon after, as City found themselves two up after just 16 minutes.

Swansea initially managed to tighten things up to prevent City from adding to their lead, but the in-form De Bruyne blasted in the hosts' third from 30 yards early in the second half.

Bernardo Silva converted from close range after Gabriel Jesus saw a penalty saved, with City's comfort allowing a late cameo for Benjamin Mendy after seven months out with a knee injury, and the rout was capped as Jesus atoned for his failure from the spot.

Any questions about potential City complacency were quickly and emphatically answered, as the champions roared into a commanding lead.City carved their visitors open for the first, as they patiently probed before Sterling was found on the left side of the area and, although his pull back was initially cut out by Alfie Mawson, David Silva pounced and rifled into the bottom-right corner.

Silva also played a crucial role for the second, releasing Fabian Delph in behind Kyle Naughton, the City left-back squaring across the face of goal to tee Sterling up for an easy finish.

The hosts' relentless start cooled somewhat soon after their second goal, though Lukasz Fabianski still had to be at his best to deny De Bruyne in the 33rd minute, getting down to his right to keep the Belgian's left-footed drive out of the bottom corner.De Bruyne was then the first to threaten in the second half, cutting in from the left and blasting a right-footed effort into the side-netting.

But he found his range nine minutes after the restart, putting City 3-0 up in spectacular fashion, as he unleashed a ferocious 30-yard drive that found the top-left corner. And 10 minutes later City had a fourth after Federico Fernandez tripped Sterling in the area - Bernardo Silva slotting in from just a few yards out after Fabianski tipped Jesus' penalty on to the post.

Guardiola introduced Mendy 15 minutes from time for his first appearance since suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in September.Another substitute, Yaya Toure, played a big role in City's fifth, chipping the ball into the box for Jesus to head over Fabianski and make amends for his earlier penalty miss.

Chelsea 2 Southampton 0: Giroud and Morata book FA Cup final spot

    4B6E623F00000578-5644071-image-a-46_1524410072353.jpg

Olivier Giroud's wonderful goal and an Alvaro Morata header earned Chelsea a 2-0 win against Southampton on Sunday and a return to the FA Cup final.Antonio Conte selected Giroud over Morata in attack and the France forward rewarded that faith with the opening goal in the first minute of the second half.

Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard combined superbly to find Giroud in the box but he still had a lot to do, jinking away from a series of challenges before prodding past Alex McCarthy.

Shane Long wasted a golden opportunity to grab a leveller for Mark Hughes' men, the Southampton striker's heavy first touch preventing him getting a shot on goal, while he also saw a penalty shout turned away by referee Martin Atkinson.

Conte's tactical nous has been questioned in what has been a difficult season but his decision to replace Giroud with Morata with 10 minutes to go proved a masterstroke, Morata heading in a Cesar Azpilicueta cross 88 seconds after his arrival. The win sees Chelsea advance to a meeting with Manchester United on May 19 and the chance to avenge last year's defeat to Arsenal in the Wembley showpiece.

Hazard, looking refreshed after being left out of the starting XI for Thursday's win at Burnley, rifled just over the angle in the fifth minute as Chelsea started on top.
The Belgium winger then drove through the centre of the pitch, teeing up Willian to crack an effort against the top of the crossbar.

Willian's 14th-minute free-kick was too high to worry McCarthy and Mario Lemina failed to seriously test stand-in goalkeeper Willy Caballero with a hopeful strike at the other end.Fabregas was running the midfield and, when Giroud flicked his chipped cross into the air, the striker twisted to direct an acrobatic volley wide of the post.

Giroud - who scored twice from the bench in a comeback Premier League win at Southampton last weekend - found the net 27 seconds into the second half, though.

Another cute Fabregas ball into the box was plucked out of the air by Hazard, who regained balance and composure to play in Giroud, the target man brilliantly dribbling past three Southampton defenders before stabbing home.

Southampton had barely threatened but Long found himself through on Caballero's goal after Charlie Austin dummied Wesley Hoedt's pass, the striker's control badly letting him down.

Atkinson rejected Long's weak penalty appeals and there were boos from the Chelsea fans for Conte's decision to bring on Tiemoue Bakayoko in place of Willian, who walked straight down the tunnel.Former Chelsea player Hughes introduced attacking duo Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic in the 63rd minute in search of an equaliser, Caballero brilliantly denying the English winger with his legs.

But it was a Chelsea change that proved decisive, Morata heading home his third goal of 2018 from a precise Azpilicueta centre, although Charlie Austin almost pulled one back only to be denied by the post.

Chievo 1 Inter 2: Icardi grateful to VAR as Nerazzurri remain in top-four hunt

    NVlmIgE.jpg

Mauro Icardi had the video assistant referee to thank for allowing his 26th Serie A goal of the season to stand in Inter's 2-1 victory over Chievo.

The 25-year-old Argentine, who is hot on the heels of Lazio's Ciro Immobile in the hunt for this season's Capocannoniere, thought his 50th-minute strike had been ruled out for offside but referee Paolo Valeri consulted replays before confirming its legitimacy, setting Inter on course for a crucial win.

Luciano Spalletti's men had been disappointing prior to that moment and were grateful to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic for keeping them in the game at the Marcantonio Bentegodi, where Chievo battled hard for points they desperately need to stave off the threat of relegation.

But after Icardi's goal was allowed to stand, Inter turned on the style and Ivan Perisic's 61st-minute strike was a reminder of how lethal the Nerazzurri can be when they are in confident mood.

The result keeps Inter one point behind fourth-placed Lazio in the race for Champions League qualification with four games left to play, while Chievo - who grabbed a late consolation through substitute Mariusz Stepinski - sit 16th, two points clear of the bottom three.

The game burst into life after 12 minutes when Manuel Pucciarelli crashed a powerful, bouncing drive onto the post from 25 yards before Inter immediately countered and put Perisic clean through on goal but he lobbed both goalkeeper and crossbar with his shot.

Emanuele Giaccherini's rising shot from just inside the penalty area would have crept under the bar if Handanovic had not pulled off an acrobatic save, palming the ball over at full stretch.

Inter's Yann Karamoh dragged a shot just wide from the edge of the box before Perisic broke down the left and squared towards Icardi, who would surely have broken the deadlock had Ivan Radovanovic not slid in to turn the ball over the crossbar.

Handanovic was called into action twice more before half-time, first when Fabrizio Cacciatore controlled the ball with his chest and unleashed a left-footed shot from inside the penalty area that forced the Slovenian goalkeeper into a difficult low save, and again when he parried away Pucciarelli's angled effort. The breakthrough arrived in controversial fashion, Icardi rolling the ball into the net after Stefano Sorrentino saved twice from Marcelo Brozovic only to see an offside flag had been raised.

Referee Valeri consulted the video assistant and judged that, although Icardi was offside when Brozovic took his first shot, he was not interfering with play and recovered his position before giving Inter the lead.

There was no doubt over Inter's second, which came from Karamoh's break down the right flank and an unselfish bit of play from Rafinha, who presented Perisic with a straightforward finish from close range and the Croatian made no mistake, slamming the ball into the bottom-left corner.Inter slowed the pace of the game in the final 20 minutes and when Chievo threatened to pull one back through Nicola Rigoni, cool-headed defender Milan Skriniar was there to block his shot.

Stepinski pounced on a late lapse in concentration to pull one back for Chievo in the 90th minute and Nenad Tomovic was painfully close to levelling it up in the last action of the game, but Spalletti's men clung on to head home with a precious three points.

Arsenal 4 West Ham 1: Wenger's long farewell begins in style

    4B6E0ECF00000578-5643911-image-a-121_1524407191487.jpg

Arsene Wenger's long farewell to Arsenal started with a 4-1 Premier League win over West Ham as the Emirates Stadium faithful finally united behind the veteran manager.

The 68-year-old put an end to the enduring speculation over his future on Friday when it was announced he would stand down at the end of the season, and a late goal from Aaron Ramsey allied to Alexandre Lacazette's double helped kick-start the leaving party on Sunday.

Having proven a divisive figure in recent seasons, the confirmation that Wenger's 22-year tenure will soon be at an end had a unifying impact on the Gunners' fans, who saw Nacho Monreal's second-half goal cancelled out by a fine Marko Arnautovic strike before Ramsey and Lacazette saved the day.

It provided Wenger, who has gone from being a relative unknown upon his arrival to the Premier League in 1996 to attaining legendary status, with his 474th English top-flight victory from 825 matches.

The man who once led Arsenal on a 49-game unbeaten run in the league still has time to add to his 17 trophies with the club – a haul that includes three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups – with a Europa League semi-final against Atletico Madrid to come.

Rumours will continue to gather momentum regarding who will replace the division's longest-serving boss, but that person will follow in the footsteps of one of football's most exceptional managerial talents, who received the acclaim of the fan base after the hosts' late rally.Meanwhile, David Moyes' side must continue to look nervously over their shoulders, but the finish line is in sight and they still have a six-point cushion over the bottom three.

Wenger insisted prior to kick-off that his full focus was on the match at hand, with his side seeking to bounce back from last weekend's loss to Newcastle United and move further clear of seventh-placed Burnley.

Although the stadium was far from full, the Frenchman was met with a warm ovation from the home fans, in stark contrast to the many anti-Wenger protests and banners that have followed 'Le Professeur' in recent times.
On the field, the home side – held 0-0 at London Stadium in the reverse fixture – made a confident start against a West Ham outfit unchanged from their crucial last-gasp draw against Stoke City.A slick attacking move saw Monreal force a corner from which Laurent Koscielny headed narrowly wide after leaping high above Cheikhou Kouyate.

David Ospina, in for the injured Petr Cech, had to be alert to deny Arnautovic after Arsenal were caught out by a long ball down West Ham's left wing, while Kouyate's awkward looping header clipped the top of the Colombian goalkeeper's crossbar.

Woeful finishing from Hector Bellerin brought an end to a moment of promise for Wenger's side, with Arthur Masuaku breathing a sigh of relief after he failed to complete a simple clearance. After Danny Welbeck's scuffed attempt from the edge of the box, Joe Hart was finally called into action to repel Granit Xhaka's free-kick.

With his remaining half-time team talks at Arsenal now numbering single figures, Wenger clearly got his message across in this one and the Gunners were ahead six minutes after the restart.Xhaka's corner found Monreal and his volley, though not sweetly struck, had enough on it to beat Hart and break the deadlock.

Arsenal, who have one home league match remaining this season, were pegged back just past the hour mark when Arnautovic fired a superb effort beyond Ospina after collecting substitute Manuel Lanzini's toe-poked pass.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, a surprising omission from the starting line-up, was introduced for the final 20 minutes as Arsenal set about restoring their advantage and they did so in fortuitous circumstances.Youngster Declan Rice bizarrely opted to duck under Ramsey's cross-cum-shot and it nestled in Hart's far corner.

That setback rocked the Hammers and just three minutes later the contest was over, Lacazette providing the finish at the end of a fine Arsenal move that harked back to the golden era under Wenger, whose name rung out around the stadium as his compatriot added the fourth to double his tally in the closing minutes.

Bayern Munich set to block Real Madrid move for Lewandowski

Bayern Munich are set to block any move for Robert Lewandowski from Real Madrid this summer despite the striker's desire to leave the Allianz Arena.Bayern are set to host Zinedine Zidane's side in the semi-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday, with speculation rife that Lewandowski could be lining up for the Blancos come next season.

Madrid are set to bolster their forward line this season with Karim Benzema struggling in front of goal and Gareth Bale unable to make any impact following a spate of injuries.Lewandowski is seen as the ideal addition, with the 29-year-old having scored 39 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions for the Bundesliga champions.

The Poland international is now keen to make one final big move before entering the twilight of his career, and earlier this season switched from his agent of ten years, Cezary Kucharski, to 'super-agent' Pini Zahavi, who has previously represented Rio Ferdinand, Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

His current deal at Bayern does not run out until the summer of 2021, however, and the Bundesliga champions are set to dig their heels in over one of their prized assets.

Given their status as one of the biggest clubs in European football, Goal understands the Bavarians do not feel they can be forced into selling any player whom they want to keep hold of while they also want to give incoming manager Niko Kovac the best chance possible of success.

Madrid had been hopeful that the ease in which an agreement was reached for James Rodriguez to move to Germany would help them in negotiations for Lewandowski, but it seems their pursuit of the former Borussia Dortmund man will not be as straightforward.

This is not the first time the two clubs have found themselves in this kind of situation, with Bayern having previously refused to sell Franck Ribery in 2009 despite having picked up Arjen Robben from Santiago Bernabeu earlier that year.

Man City plot mammoth signing as deal for £50m-valued Jorginho draws closerger

Manchester City are closing in on a deal for Napoli's £50 million-rated midfielder Jorginho and are ready to splash the cash on a marquee signing if the possibility presents itself.Goal understands City want to make just two signings this summer as they look to build on their Premier League-winning campaign.

They are pursuing a deep-lying midfielder - now likely to be Jorginho - and a forward; the same positions they attempted to strengthen in January.

If all goes to plan City will have concluded their business before this summer’s World Cup.During the winter transfer window, City unsuccessfully pushed to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk and, first, Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal and then Riyad Mahrez from Leicester.

But it is Jorginho, not Fred, who has emerged as City’s top target for the deep-lying midfield role. The Italy international is keen to work with Pep Guardiola and a deal is close to being sealed, although Napoli’s involvement in Serie A's title race is likely to delay an official announcement.

City have also narrowed down their options for the forward line to two as-yet-unconfirmed names, and it is also believed a move for Kylian Mbappe has not been ruled out. Sources have told Goal that Mbappe is not currently one of the two names on City’s list, but the Blues would look to sign him if the opportunity arises.

That would involve Paris Saint-Germain failing to comply with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations, while Neymar’s future would also play a part. It's a complicated situation but City are determined not to miss a second opportunity to sign Mbappe, having come close last summer.

While City chiefs identified their two preferred forward options last month, they are not as far advanced in those pursuits as they are with Jorginho. It is for that reason that they are keeping an open mind regarding Mbappe - should he become available, or should their two names go elsewhere, the Blues will be happy to switch their focus.Mahrez is still of interest to the City hierarchy following his failed move in January, although he is not currently considered a priority.

The Blues have also shown an interest in Chelsea’s Eden Hazard in the past few months, with the Belgian likely to command a similar fee to Mbappe - roughly £150m.While City’s plans for a forward are relatively up-in-the-air, they remain optimistic that they will be able to find the right man before the World Cup starts in mid-June.

July is also a possibility but the Blues are determined not to let their summer business drag on as it did last summer, when they spent August chasing several players but failed to sign any.Jorginho, 26, has rejected offers from several other European clubs in a bid to seal a move to the Etihad Stadium.

It is believed that Napoli are holding out for a fee of £50m at the very least, though City are confident they will be able to strike a deal.City shifted their focus away from Fred after failing to sign the Brazilian in January, and in recent weeks they have held several meetings with Jorginho’s agent.Guardiola, his technical staff and sporting director Txiki Begiristain have all agreed that the Brazil-born midfielder is the perfect option to one day replace Fernandinho.

The Premier League champions had recently been linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl and Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara, although Goal understands neither player has been under serious consideration. Similarly, Real Madrid's Isco is not thought to be an option.Sources have also told Goal that a centre-back does not currently feature in City’s plans.

Unless a member of the current first-team squad leaves this summer, which is currently not expected to happen, City only intend to sign two players.

Mohamed Salah is ‘the most dangerous player right now’ - AS Roma's Strootman

Ahead of their Uefa Champions League semi-final clash with Liverpool, AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has called Mohamed Salah 'the most dangerous player right now'.Salah, fresh off his PFA Player of the Year win following his outstanding performances in the English Premier League, will lead Jurgen Klopp's charges when the Giallarossi visit Anfield for the first leg of their last-four tie on Tuesday.

And Strootman, teammates with the 25-year-old during his successful two-year stint at the Italian capital, is wary of the progress of the Egypt international who has a return of a whooping 41 goals so far in his debut campaign with the Reds.

"Salah is definitely the most dangerous player right now and we won't be friends on the pitch,” Strootman told La Repubblica .
"I've tried to call him lately but he doesn't pick up the phone. He must have changed his number like six times. I will write to him after the semi-final."Salah has been instrumental in Liverpool's run to the semi-finals of the Champions League, scoring nine goals in 12 games where he has featured for 915 minutes.
The attacker will be hoping to add to his haul of 41 goals in Tuesday's encounter against his former side.

Mourinho: My critics want to kill me if I lose!

Jose Mourinho has hit out at his critics, claiming that when he doesn't win they are ready to "kill him".

The Manchester United boss has guided the club to the FA Cup final after a professional victory over Tottenham at Wembley, but the Red Devils have missed out on the Premier League trophy, and were also knocked out of the Champions League by Sevilla.

However, Mourinho, whose side are currently on course to finish second, insists that his critics are always waiting for the slightest slip-up, in order to lambast his management.

"When I don't win, you kill me," Mourinho told reporters. "Because I almost do that all the time, when I don't do it, you kill me, which is what you are all ready to do."United are currently 16 points behind Manchester City, who won the Premier League title with five games to spare and are on course to break a host of records.

Mourinho, though, thinks that his side should have at least eight more points than they currently do, pointing out unexpected defeats at home against West Brom and away to Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United, and has urged his players to improve next season as they try to reel in Pep Guardiola's men.

"I keep saying that I think we should have probably eight, nine, 10 more points than we had," he added."We could finish this season with 88, 89, 90 points. Not acceptable, the last defeat. Not acceptable, the performance at Huddersfield. Not acceptable, the performance at Newcastle.

"So, we lost a few matches that we should do better. Can we improve next season? Let's try."Can Manchester City keep this level or improve this level? Only they can say."But if they have the team they have and if they are going to invest on top of the team they have, of course it is going to be very difficult for us."

Oblak unsure over Atletico Madrid future

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak said "nobody knows" what will happen in the future as the Slovenian star insisted he is only focused on ending the season with silverware.Oblak has been linked with Premier League side Liverpool and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain previously following his exploits for Atletico.

The 25-year-old – who moved to Madrid from Benfica in 2014 – has helped Atletico up to second in La Liga, while the Spanish outfit are preparing for their Europa League semi-final showdown with Arsenal.

However, Oblak did little to allay doubts over his future after Sunday's goalless draw against Real Betis."No news. I have the contract that I signed two years ago," Oblak told reporters."What will happen well nobody knows, not even me. I prefer to finish the season well and hopefully with a title. Then we'll see but I have a contract. I do not think of anything other than Atletico."

Oblak added: "Atletico can grow. They have grown a lot and surely will not stop now, although it is not easy."I am sure that Atletico will grow and we will see what will happen to me, for the moment I am here.

"I have a contract until 2021. If I continue, we will grow together and if not, the club will grow as well."

Navas will be at Real Madrid for many years – Perez

Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas will remain at Real Madrid "for many years to come" if the club's president Florentino Perez has his way.

Navas' future has come under regular scrutiny this season and his desire to remain with the European champions was not aided by an error in the second leg of Madrid's eventual Champions League quarter-final win over Juventus.

Madrid were close to signing promising Spain shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga from fellow La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao in January, while they are known to be admirers of Manchester United's David de Gea.

Perez, though, is a fan of Navas, whose standing among the club's fans was stamped by his induction as an honorary member of the Ramon Mendoza Supporters' Group at their 30th-anniversary event."Keylor, you have won the love and affection of everyone in Madrid," Perez said in quotes reported by AS.

"You have done that through talent, professionalism and by your conduct, because you have identified with Real Madrid's values."We are very proud to have you as our goalkeeper, regardless of what others might say. Keep working hard and I'm sure you will be with us for many years to come."

Navas has two seasons remaining on the six-year deal he signed upon joining Madrid from Levante in 2014.

Juventus 0 Napoli 1: Partenopei close the gap thanks to Koulibaly

Napoli kept their Serie A title hopes alive in the most dramatic fashion in Turin on Sunday, Kalidou Koulibaly powering home a match-winning header in stoppage time against Juventus to move his side within one point of the Bianconeri.

It looked as though Juve were going to preserve their four-point advantage at the summit with four games to play and edge closer to a seventh successive Scudetto only for Koulibaly to throw the race wide open.

Compounding Juve's last-gasp defeat is the fact Massimiliano Allegri's men arguably have the tougher run-in of the two sides, with the Derby d'Italia away to Inter coming up next Saturday, and a clash with Champions League semi-finalists Roma awaiting in the penultimate round of fixtures.

Napoli, meanwhile, seeking to win a first Scudetto since 1989-90, when they were inspired to a second title in four seasons by the great Diego Maradona, visit Fiorentina next weekend hopeful of seizing on any further slip-ups from the leaders.

Napoli enjoyed an early sight of goal when Lorenzo Insigne fired wide in the first minute, and the passage of play proved costly for Juventus, as Giorgio Chiellini sustained an injury that ultimately forced him off 10 minutes later, having failed to convince in his attempts to shake off what appeared to be a muscle problem.

With full-back Stephan Lichtsteiner introduced and Benedikt Howedes shifting to centre-back, Juve went close for the first time in the 17th minute, Miralem Pjanic's deflected free-kick wrongfooting Pepe Reina and striking the far post, leaving the Napoli goalkeeper stranded.

His counterpart Gianluigi Buffon had to be alert to tip over a dipping cross-cum-shot from Mario Rui, who then slid in Marek Hamsik for the best chance of the first half in the 24th minute, only for the Napoli captain to drag his attempt across the face of goal and wide.Insigne had the ball in the back of the net seven minutes before half-time, but Lichtsteiner smartly stepped up to catch his opponent offside.

Allegri responded to his team's underwhelming first-half showing by withdrawing Paulo Dybala in favour of Juan Cuadrado, while Maurizio Sarri introduced the fit-again and in-form Arkadiusz Milik a minute past the hour mark, taking off the relatively ineffectual Dries Mertens.Substitute Piotr Zielinski tested Buffon from long range with seven minutes to go in what had been a tense second half, and the goalkeeper also had to claw away an awkward Jose Callejon delivery.

From the Spaniard's subsequent corner, Napoli grabbed the all-important goal, Koulibaly rising above the Juve backline to head home a powerful winner, the final whistle sparking wild celebrations among the visitors and ensuring a thrilling conclusion to the title race.
