Juventus 3 Bologna 1: Bianconeri on verge of title as Costa inspires turnaround

    73e3169b-9674-45f7-ab85-cedb9a22b1cb

Douglas Costa produced an inspirational performance off the bench as Juventus came from behind to beat Bologna 3-1 at the Allianz Stadium on Saturday, meaning they will become Serie A champions again if Napoli lose to Torino on Sunday.

Massimiliano Allegri's men looked in trouble after falling 1-0 down to their visitors in the first half, but they rallied with a vengeance in the second period - half-time substitute Costa playing a starring role with two assists to ensure they head into the Coppa Italia final against AC Milan on Wednesday in high spirits.

Juve's start gave no indication they would need another comeback like they did to beat Inter last time out, as they caused Bologna's backline plenty of problems. But a Gianluigi Buffon error coupled with a clumsy Daniele Rugani tackle allowed Simone Verdi to put Bologna ahead from the penalty spot in the 30th minute, the centre-back saved from a red card by VAR.

With Juve offering little out wide, Allegri sent Costa on from the bench at the interval and his impact was as desired, but it was a Sebastien De Maio own goal restored parity.

Costa set up two goals in six minutes just after the hour mark, finding Sami Khedira and then Paulo Dybala to seal all three points for Juve, leaving them on the brink of a seventh successive title. There was no sign of early Bianconeri nerves as they made a strong start and nearly went ahead in the seventh minute, Gonzalo Higuain drawing a good save from Antonio Mirante after Claudio Marchisio carved the visitors' defence open.

Bologna were guilty of a defensive mishap a few minutes later, as Dybala robbed De Maio just outside the area before seeing his effort deflected harmlessly over.
But Juve shot themselves in the foot after half an hour, Buffon selling Rugani short with a pass that forced the centre-back to haul the sharp Lorenzo Crisetig to the ground in the area.Although the VAR review which concluded Rugani should not be sent off took a while, Verdi kept his cool to dispatch the spot-kick in remarkably confident fashion.

Juve failed to threaten again before the break and Allegri responded at half-time by introducing Costa on the left wing for Blaise Matuidi, with the Brazilian making a significant difference. But the equaliser came via the opposite flank – Juan Cuadrado's curling cross calamitously flicked into the back of the net by Bologna defender De Maio.

Juve were lucky to remain on level terms just before the hour mark, however, as a cross found its way through to Emil Krafth and Buffon tipped his effort onto the post. The hosts soon capitalised on that let-off, Costa's deep left-wing delivery finding Khedira at the back post for an easy finish.

And the Brazil international was at it again in the 69th minute, tearing up the left and playing a low cross into the area for Dybala to guide home. It was plain sailing from there for the defending champions, as they heap the pressure back on Napoli ahead of their meeting with Torino.

Iniesta passed fit by Barcelona for final Clasico outing

Andres Iniesta has been passed fit for Barcelona's squad to face Real Madrid in what will be his final Clasico.Iniesta missed training during the week due to a reported calf issue and was a doubt for Sunday's La Liga game at Camp Nou.

But the club captain, set to leave Barca at the end of the season, is included in an 18-man squad named by Ernesto Valverde on Saturday.

Barcelona are at full strength for the clash against their arch-rivals, having wrapped up the Liga title last week with victory over Deportivo. There is no room in the matchday squad for the likes of Yerry Mina, Aleix Vidal and Andre Gomes, who are all left out by Valverde for Sunday's match.

Iniesta is expected to complete a move to Chinese Super League side Chongqing Lifan, but the Spain midfielder is yet to confirm his future plans.

The 33-year-old has won nine La Liga titles during his career-long association with Barca, also claiming six Copa del Rey crowns and four Champions Leagues.

Legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage, the club has confirmed. The 76-year-old's son Darren - who is Doncaster Rovers manager - missed his team's game with Wigan Athletic on Saturday due to a "severe family issue".

As statement on Doncaster's website read: “Darren asks for privacy, and will provide an update through the club during the week."United have confirmed that Ferguson, their manager for 27 years until his retirement in 2013, is receiving treatment in hospital.A United statement read: "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.

"The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."Everyone at Manchester United sends our very best wishes."Ferguson was seen just last weekend at Old Trafford, as he presented departing Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with a gift to commemorate his time in north London.

Ferguson went down in history at United after breaking a 25-year title drought with the inaugural Premier League trophy in 1992-93.That win sparked an unprecedented spell of domination for the Red Devils, who under the Scot lifted a further 12 top-flight titles.

Fergie also led United to two Champions League crowns in 1998-99 and 2007-08, and was at the club for a total of 27 years before finally stepping down at the end of the 2012-13 campaign after celebrating his 13th Premier League triumph.
As well as with the Manchester giants, Ferguson also enjoyed success in the 1980s at the helm of Aberdeen, where he won three Scottish Premier League titles.

During a playing career that took place between 1957 and 1974, Ferguson was known as a combative centre-forward and starred for the likes of Rangers and St. Johnstone in his native Scotland.Considered one of the greatest managers ever, Ferguson was knighted in the 1999 Queen's Birthday Honours list for his services to the game.

Manchester United honoured their manager even further in 2011, when Old Trafford's North Stand was renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand on the 25th anniversary of his appointment.

:love::love:Be strong, boss - Cristiano Ronaldo sends message to ill Alex Ferguson

Cristiano Ronaldo sent his former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson his support and urged him to "be strong" after suffering a brain haemorrhage.United confirmed on Saturday that Ferguson, 76, fell ill on Friday and has been in intensive care after undergoing a procedure which went "very well", according to the club. The Scot managed United for 27 years until 2013, enjoying an immensely successful career in Manchester which saw him win a host of trophies and discover many great players.

Arguably chief among the talents he developed was Ronaldo, whom Ferguson signed from Sporting CP in 2003 as a replacement for David Beckham.
    4GAQz8y.jpg

Ferguson nurtured Ronaldo at United and the attacker won the first of his five Ballons d'Or under his tutelage at Old Trafford in 2008, having also claimed his first Champions League title the same year.

Ronaldo was allowed to leave United - like Beckham previously - for LaLiga giants Real Madrid in 2009, but Ferguson was still held in high regard by the powerful forward.

And he is hoping for good news for Ferguson following his illness.Ronaldo wrote on his official Twitter account: "My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend. Be strong, Boss!"

Liverpool send support to ‘great friend’ Sir Alex Ferguson

Liverpool have passed on their well wishes to former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson following emergency surgery after he suffered a brain haemorrhage.

United confirmed on Saturday that the 76-year-old was in intensive care following an operation but added that things had gone “very well”.Nevertheless, there remain concerns for the veteran Scot’s wellbeing, with positive messages of support having come from all corners of the footballing world.

The Red Devils’ great rivals, Liverpool, are among those to have paid tribute to the two-time Champions League winner and wish him well in his fight to regain his health.

In a statement posted on the club website, they said: “The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following the news that the former Manchester United manager is ill in hospital.

“A great rival but also a great friend who supported this club during its most difficult time, it is hoped that Sir Alex will make a full recovery. “In the meantime, the club will offer its full support to Manchester United and also his family.”Liverpool hold Ferguson in high esteem for his demeanour in the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy.

Kenny Dalglish revealed to the Daily Mirror in 2012: “When the Hillsborough disaster happened back in 1989, Sir Alex Ferguson was straight on the phone to offer his help in any way he could.

“People out there have different opinions about him. Some love him, some hate him, but when something terrible happens, like Hillsborough, Alex is one of the first asking what he can do.“So although there is an intense rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool, it would never prevent Alex from offering his assistance, which is exactly what he did back then.”

As a manager, Ferguson faced off against Liverpool on 64 occasions, winning 29 of those matches and losing a further 21, though two of those losses came while he was still in charge at Aberdeen.

Chelsea 1 Liverpool 0: Giroud takes Conte's men to within two points of Spurs

    4BEB73EC00000578-0-image-a-18_1525624563730.jpg

Chelsea took full advantage of Tottenham's shock defeat to West Brom by grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, closing to within two points of the Champions League places.

Antonio Conte's men had appeared almost out of the running for Champions League football until recently, but Olivier Giroud's first-half header secured them a fourth successive top-flight win and they go into the final two games of the season within striking distance of Spurs.

Liverpool actually looked the brighter of the two sides for most of the first half, with Sadio Mane producing three decent efforts before the half-hour mark passed. But the hosts were simply more clinical, as Giroud headed in one of Chelsea's few opportunities in the 32nd minute, repaying Antonio Conte's faith after an ineffective performance in last week's 1-0 win at Swansea City.

Having the lead allowed Chelsea to sit back a little more after the break, challenging Liverpool to break them down, and the Reds struggled to do so, with Mohamed Salah – making his 50th appearance for the club – and Roberto Firmino particularly disappointing.

Chelsea did have to withstand significant pressure towards the end, but they had enough to keep Liverpool at bay, meaning Jurgen Klopp's men - who are just a point better off than Spurs - will be starting to look over their shoulder.Given their exploits in reaching the Champions League final in Wednesday's semi-final second leg with Roma, Liverpool's failure to produce an intense start was unsurprising.

As a result, Chelsea looked the more threatening early on, with Giroud and Tiemoue Bakayoko getting in each other's way when a decent chance presented itself in the 14th minute, before Marcos Alonso tested Loris Karius from long distance.Liverpool did gradually wake up, however, with Mane looking particularly threatening, drilling a 25-yard half-volley at Thibaut Courtois.

The Senegal attacker then troubled Courtois again twice in quick succession just before the half-hour mark, first from long range and then from about 10 yards, prodding straight at him.And Chelsea capitalised soon after – Victor Moses' right-wing cross took a slight deflection on its way into the area and Giroud expertly guided a header into the far corner.

The hosts were quicker out of the blocks in the second period and swiftly carved the Reds open as Fabregas fed Moses, whose fierce cross-cum-shot went just wide of the bottom-left corner.Liverpool simply could not get going in attack, with Salah crowded out whenever he got the ball and Mane drifted from prominence.

Jordan Henderson's introduction from the bench in the 59th minute added a little extra steel, but still Chelsea looked more dangerous - Alonso nearly making it 2-0 with an exquisite volley from the left side of the area that went agonisingly wide of the top-right corner.

A Henderson cross five minutes from time nearly saw Cesar Azpilicueta put into his own net, but Courtois was on hand to pounce before former Chelsea youngster and second-half substitute Dominic Solanke went close deep into stoppage time, his effort flying just wide of Courtois' right-hand post as the hosts survived to claim a potentially vital victory.

Arsenal 5 Burnley 0: Wenger wins on Emirates swansong as Gunners seal sixth place

    4BEB91FB00000578-5697103-image-a-46_1525627087294.jpg

Arsene Wenger enjoyed a winning farewell in his final home game in charge as Arsenal eased to a 5-0 thumping of Burnley at Emirates Stadium. The Frenchman, who will leave at the end of the season after nearly 22 years at the helm, saw his side seal sixth place in style, thrashing their nearest rivals in the table on Sunday.

While the midweek Europa League defeat to Atletico Madrid ended his hopes of finishing his reign with a trophy, Wenger was rightly the centre of attention in his 606th and last home fixture. The outgoing manager was given a guard of honour prior to kick-off before witnessing Arsenal cut loose against a Burnley side who arrived still harbouring hopes of leapfrogging their opponents.

A pair of goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - Wenger's final signing - book-ended efforts from Alexandre Lacazette, Sead Kolasinac and Alex Iwobi, as Arsenal made hay in the capital sunshine.Only the woodwork denied them hitting half a dozen, Danny Welbeck seeing his rising drive kept out by the crossbar, on a day of celebration for the club's longest serving boss.

The last three league meetings between the teams were settled in Arsenal’s favour by winners beyond the 90th minute, but the hosts made sure there was no need for late drama in Wenger's swansong. They went ahead in the 14th minute when Lacazette's attempt to score from a tight angle on Arsenal's right instead set up Aubameyang for an easy tap-in.

The Frenchman turned from provider to scorer for Arsenal's second, poking in a left-footed volley towards the end of a first half extended by four minutes due to a shoulder injury to Ashley Barnes.

The striker went off with his right arm in a makeshift sling following a heavy collision with Granit Xhaka and, minus both Barnes and Chris Wood, their joint top-scorers, Burnley struggled to make an impact in attack, failing to even muster an attempt at goal before half-time.

Sam Vokes did call Petr Cech into action early in the second half, though his tame header summed up an unusually lacklustre performance from Sean Dyche's squad in an otherwise impressive campaign.Kolasinac killed off any remote hopes of a Burnley comeback, drilling a low drive into the net after he was teed up by the outstanding Jack Wilshere's pass.

A fourth followed in the 64th minute, Iwobi firing into the roof of the net just as Arsenal fans sang about Patrick Vieira, a potential candidate to replace his old boss, while Aubameyang rounded out the scoring by tapping home Hector Bellerin's low cross.

Napoli 2 Torino 2: Juventus prepare to celebrate

    4BEB3E5C00000578-0-image-a-100_1525622774864.jpg

Napoli effectively gifted the Serie A title to Juventus with a deflating 2-2 draw against Torino, which leaves them six points adrift with two matches remaining.

The visitors struck two second-half equalisers to deny Maurizio Sarri's men the victory they desperately needed to apply any sense of pressure in the race for the Scudetto.Juve now require only a point - and, most likely, not even that given their vastly superior goal difference - to guarantee they finish first.

Marek Hamsik appeared set to be Napoli's hero on Sunday when he thundered in a stunning 100th goal in Serie A from just outside the area less than two minutes after stepping off the bench. That gave Napoli a lead to protect over the remaining 19 minutes but they failed to hold on, instead folding under the tension that had appeared to affect them during last weekend's costly 3-0 defeat at Fiorentina.

Lorenzo De Silvestri proved the man to deny them on this occasion as he headed in Adem Ljajic's dipping cross seven minutes from time.Ljajic's pass had earlier supplied Torino's initial equaliser 10 minutes after the interval, Daniele Baselli beating Pepe Reina with a deflected strike that cancelled out Dries Mertens' soft 25th-minute opener.

The Partenopei now seem set for a meek surrender in a title race that was well and truly alive courtesy of their memorable 1-0 win in Turin just two weeks ago and it could prove a disappointing ending to Maurizio Sarri's time in charge, with president Aurelio De Laurentiis admitting the coach could leave at the end of the season as has been heavily reported.

For their part, the players seemed well aware of the need to pursue three points at Stadio San Paolo as they took the initiative from the outset, with Lorenzo Insigne looking particularly dangerous. The opener, though, was gift wrapped for birthday boy Mertens. Nicolas Burdisso collected Kevin Bonifazi's square pass with a heavy backwards touch and compounded it with a poor second that enabled Mertens to nip in and poke past the static Salvatore Sirigu at close range.

Buoyed by the end of an eight-game barren streak, the Belgium international almost punished another cheap concession of possession shortly before the break, but Sirigu was this time up to keeping out the hurried shot.

Torino, who had been relatively secure either side of those nervy moments, were level within 10 minutes of the restart as Ljajic fed a pass into the feet of midfielder Baselli, whose left-footed effort from just inside the area deflected off Vlad Chiriches and beat Reina inside his near post.Suddenly enthused, Torino next saw M'Baye Niang fire into the side-netting as Napoli appeared rattled by the swift change in circumstances.

Sarri turned to his bench and found inspiration in the shape of Arkadiusz Milik and goal-scorer Hamsik. Poland international Milik first thundered a strike against the left post before Hamisk went one better, thumping a stunning half-volley from just beyond the box that bent around the helpless Sirigu.

Milik should have put the result beyond doubt with just over 10 minutes remaining, but somehow side-footed wide as Insigne waited to tap home Jose Callejon's low cross. And the miss proved costly in the 83rd minute, De Silvestri meeting Ljajic's cross in behind a sleepy defence and nodding home.

Napoli had half-hearted appeals for a handball in the area waved away in stoppage time as their Scudetto ambitions evaporated, with Juve just about ready to start the celebrations of what appears destined to be a seventh successive triumph.

Manchester City 0 Huddersfield Town 0: Rare off-day spoils Guardiola title party

    4BEA47B900000578-5696609-image-a-11_1525612151637.jpg

Manchester City were held to a 0-0 draw by Huddersfield Town on Sunday that slightly dampened their Premier League title celebrations.Pep Guardiola's runaway leaders were well short of their best as they failed to break down a resilient Huddersfield side, who move three points clear of the relegation zone.

A packed crowd at the Etihad Stadium saluted the title-winners with a flag display before kick-off, with their team at last able to celebrate with the trophy after the final whistle. The action on the pitch did not quite match up to the carnival atmosphere, though, with City managing only two shots on target in the match, and none in the second half.

Indeed, Huddersfield arguably had the better chances in the first 45 minutes, particularly when Florent Hadergjonaj shot straight at Ederson from inside the penalty area.

The result means City are still two goals, two points and one victory short of Premier League records, with games to come against Brighton and Hove Albion and Southampton, but it could prove a crucial point for Huddersfield as they prepare to face Chelsea and Arsenal.

David Silva, who led his team out to a Huddersfield guard of honour before kick-off, forced a good low save from Jonas Lossl as City started on the front foot.
Ederson was soon busy in the home goal, though, keeping out Aaron Mooy's bouncing effort before denying Hadergjonaj after a clever free-kick.

Alex Pritchard and Chris Lowe each had chances with fierce strikes, too, as City struggled to find rhythm in a first half played out to the sounds of a faulty stadium fire alarm, with a couple of Kevin De Bruyne efforts the closest they came to a goal before the break.Lossl almost dropped the ball on the goal line as City stepped up their attacks after the restart, but David Wagner's well-drilled defence largely restricted the home side to hopeful crosses into the box.

Guardiola introduced Benjamin Mendy, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva from the bench, yet their 79 per cent possession tally continued to yield little by way of opportunities, and Scott Malone stung the palms of Ederson after racing into space on the break in injury time.

The draw does see them move 17 points clear of second-place Manchester United, though, and keeps them on course to break the 100-point barrier if they win their final two matches.

Udinese 0 Inter 4: Nerazzurri keep Champions League hopes alive

Inter boosted their chances of Champions League qualification with a dominant 4-0 victory over 10-man Udinese in Serie A.

Four points behind Lazio and Roma prior to Sunday's clash at Dacia Arena, Luciano Spalletti's side wasted no time in stamping their authority on proceedings - Mauro Icardi's 99th Serie A goal for the club putting them 3-0 up at the interval.
Icardi's effort in first-half stoppage time came just three minutes after Rafinha had doubled Inter's lead, Andrea Ranocchia having headed the visitors in front early on.

Udinese had managed to forge some opportunities prior to Inter's quickfire double, but both Valon Behrami and Kevin Lasagna failed to take advantage of some sloppy Inter defending.

Inter were on the wrong side of a VAR red card decision in their 3-2 defeat to Juventus last time out, but were helped by the system this time - Seko Fofana seeing red following a review.Borja Valero added a fourth goal in the 71st minute and victory sets Inter up for a crucial clash with Sassuolo next time out, before they face Lazio in what could be a winner-takes-all encounter on the final day.

Superb defending from Danilo denied Inter the perfect start - the Brazilian brilliantly clearing Ivan Perisic's powerful header off the line.Inter would not be kept out for much longer, though, as Ranocchia lost his marker to head home from Marcelo Brozovic's inswinging corner 12 minutes in.

Spalletti's side would have been two up five minutes later if not for another goal-line clearance from Danilo, with goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri having rushed off his line to challenge Icardi.

Antonio Candreva should have doubled Inter's lead just after the half hour, but the former Lazio man - still chasing his first Inter goal of the season - sliced over from close range.

Udinese could have made Inter pay moments later, only for Behrami to head over from close range before Samir Handanovic pulled off a superb stop to deny Kevin Lasagna.

Those misses proved costly on 43 minutes, Rafinha regaining possession deep in Udinese's half before charging clear of the hosts' defence and slotting a precise finish into the bottom-left corner. There was still time before the break for Icardi to make it 3-0, Bizzarri unable to keep out the Argentine's stinging drive at his near post.

Lasagna went close from distance as Udinese looked to haul themselves back into the contest after the restart, but any hopes of a comeback were effectively ended when Fofana received his marching orders.

Having initially awarded a free-kick for Fofana's late challenge on Perisic, referee Paolo Mazzoleni utilised the VAR system and decided the Udinese man had intentionally stamped on Inter's winger.Matters were made worse for Udinese with 19 minutes remaining, Valero expertly tucking home after latching on to Persic's deflected shot.

Substitute Yann Karamoh should have piled further humiliation on Udinese late on, only for the youngster to rattle the crossbar when one-on-one with Bizzarri. While Inter's focus is firmly on the remaining Champions League places, Udinese remain in danger of being dragged into the relegation scrap.

Atletico Madrid 0 Espanyol 2: Simeone's men lose at home after Savic error

Atletico Madrid's hopes of becoming LaLiga runners-up suffered a blow as Espanyol inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Diego Simeone's side.Oscar Melendo's shot found the net after eight minutes of the second half, courtesy of a heavy deflection off the head of Stefan Savic, and a below-par Atletico side failed to claw their way back on a hot afternoon at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Leo Baptistao doubled Espanyol's lead with 13 minutes left on the clock and a two-goal advantage was a fair reflection of a game in which the visitors were by far the more fluent team, attacking incisively and frustrating their hosts in midfield.

The result meant Atletico dropped league points at home for the first time since January, when they were held 1-1 by Girona in a game that marked the last time they had conceded at the Metropolitano, and gave third-placed Real Madrid the opportunity to close the gap separating the two sides to one point in Sunday's Clasico with Barcelona.

Espanyol were already safe from relegation before the game but coach David Gallego will have been delighted to see his players live up to their billing as one of LaLiga's most underrated sides this season.

They enjoyed an early spell of pressure, pinning Atletico back in their own half for much of the opening 20 minutes and taking advantage of a scrappy start from the home side.

Diego Simeone cut a frustrated figure on the touchline until Koke asserted himself on the game and burst towards the penalty area before squaring the ball to Kevin Gameiro, who sent a shot bouncing narrowly wide to the left of the goal from just inside the box.

A thigh injury to Atletico winger Vitolo forced Simeone to bring on Arona Sane after 26 minutes, and moments later Lucas Hernandez broke from defence and jinked all the way through Espanyol's half before seeing his shot deflected wide.

On the half-hour mark Espanyol swept forward, Didac Vila sprinting over the halfway line before finding Gerard Moreno, who beat two defenders and unleashed a shot that Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak only just managed to parry onto the post and away from danger.

Saul Niguez replaced Koke for the second half as Simeone sought a winning formula in midfield and he fired a volley towards goal from close range that Pau Lopez reacted quickly to save.

Espanyol countered and their fast break presented a shooting opportunity to Melendo, whose effort looked unlikely to test Oblak until Savic got a touch with his head that took the ball into the middle of the empty net as the goalkeeper dived to his right and Atletico conceded for the first time in 13 games.

Oblak made an excellent one-handed save from Baptistao's shot after Espanyol again found a way through the Atletico defence but he could do nothing to prevent the second goal arriving after 77 minutes.

Baptistao received the ball from Melendo on the edge of the box and took a touch to control it before beating Oblak with a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the net, putting the game out of Atletico's reach - much to the frustration of a crowd who are far from used to seeing their side lose at home.

Sarri reveals €8m Napoli release clause amid Chelsea interest

Maurizio Sarri confirmed the existence of an €8million release clause in his contract as he dispelled suggestions of a rift with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Sarri has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League with Chelsea considering him as a replacement for Antonio Conte , while Arsenal are also reportedly looking at the Italian as a contender to take over from Arsene Wenger.Speculation over his possible departure from Stadio San Paolo was fuelled by recent criticism from De Laurentiis, who blamed a lack of squad rotation for burning out the players.

Any move would come on the back of a disappointing end to the season after a 2-2 home draw with Torino on Sunday effectively handed the title to Juventus, who are six points clear with two matches remaining.

"There is a contract that has a clause worth €8m," Sarri told Sky Sport Italy."We have 10 days [after the final league game] to evaluate the situation. The president gave me the chance to coach the team I've supported since childhood, a satisfaction very few people have enjoyed. “If he's happy and I'm happy, then that's great. If he is not happy, then I'm disappointed, but every now and then Aurelio does make these statements and then 30 minutes later it's back as if nothing had happened."

Napoli are now set to finish as runners-up to Juve for the second time in their three seasons under Sarri. The 59-year-old admitted their ability to challenge for the Scudetto will be compromised if the Partenopei fail to keep their top talent in Naples.

"If the era is over, that's down to the club. If the club cannot keep hold of six or seven of these players, then clearly an era is over," he said."This is a group of players with a culture of hard work and are ready to keep challenging themselves.

"We could've done more without [the injuries for Arkadiusz Milik and Faouzi Ghoulam], but physical fitness isn't as important as the mind."

Arsenal match highest goalscoring home season as Wenger signs out in style

Arsenal will finish the 2017-18 Premier League season having scored 54 league goals at the Emirates; their joint-highest tally of home goals in a top-flight campaign, along with 2004-05.The Gunners picked up a convincing 5-0 victory at home to Burnley on Sunday evening, marking manager Arsene Wenger's final home game in charge of the club after 22 years of service.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for Arsenal before concluding the scoring late in the game, with goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Sead Kolasinac and Alex Iwobi in between.

The result nudged the Gunners six points ahead of Burnley, who sit directly beneath them in the Premier League table with just one set of full fixtures remaining. It will be Wenger's farewell which the game is remembered for, however, as the iconic manager was given a guard of honour before kick-off and serenaded throughout the tie.

The Frenchman confirmed that he would take his leave at the end of the current campaign after more than two decades in charge of the club, following mounting pressure for his resignation over the past 18 months.Arsenal's 5-0 victory will be seen as a fitting tribute for Wenger, however, with tension turning into appreciation in the weeks following the announcement.

'Only one Arsene Wenger' - Fitting Emirates farewell for Arsenal's greatest ever manager

'Merci Arsene' was the theme of the day at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, as Arsene Wenger marked his final home game in charge of Arsenal with a 5-0 win over Burnley.Fans were encouraged to arrive at the stadium early and there were long lines of people outside the Gunners’ club shop waiting to sign a guest book that included tributes from supporters around the world.

The match itself had a testimonial feel to it and the huge turnout only served to underline the esteem in which Wenger is still held, even if negative fan sentiment was one of the main reasons why he decided to call time on his two decades in charge of the north Londoners.

While the result paled into relative insignificance, Arsenal’s players ensured that Wenger would remember his last game fondly at the stadium he helped create.

The Frenchman didn’t get the European trophy send-off that he was clearly so desperate for following defeat to Atletico Madrid on Thursday, but his team put on a performance which will certainly give the next Arsenal manager food for thought when it comes to the summer transfer window.

Commemorative t-shirts labelled with ‘Merci Arsene’ were given to every home fan to wear during the game and even the away fans sung ‘Only one Arsene Wenger’, which was an apt testament to his status as one of the most influential figures English football has ever known.

“Personally, I expect today will be dominated by sadness,” Wenger said before the game.“It’s the end of a long story for me at Arsenal. But I will also feel grateful for having led this club - that I cherish so much - for such a long time.

“I tried to commit completely, for so many years, to make people happy and I wish just that people who love this club will be happy in the future and get what they really want and love.

“I’ve met people for whom I am the only Arsenal manager they have known, so now this is a good opportunity for the club to have new people and new ideas to continue to move the club forward, which is what I’ve tried to do my whole life.”

News that Sir Alex Ferguson is in intensive care after having emergency surgery on Saturday for a brain haemorrhage reminds us all that there is more to life than just football. Legends come and go but there are some figures in sport who have left more than a blueprint on the game that millions around the world love so much.

Wenger’s love story with Arsenal Football Club is almost over but the legacy he leaves will never be forgotten. It is a cliché to say all good things come to an end, although with Wenger’s tenure at Arsenal that is certainly the case.

From ‘Arsene Who?’ to ‘Le Proffeseur’, the double-winning side of 1998 to the Invincibles of 2003/04, the FA Cup's most successful manager has provided moments of magic to every single Arsenal supporter across the globe.

There really is only one Arsene Wenger and in a few months' time his successor will have a mammoth task on his hands in trying to fill the void.Wenger, meanwhile, will ponder the next step in a career which has spanned over two decades at the club he loves. But one suspects he'll stay in football.

As he said, "One day I'll go up to heaven and He will ask ‘What have you done with your life?' The only answer I have will be, ‘I tried to win football games.'"
