I'm just proud of being your player - Ronaldo pays Zidane tribute

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is "proud" to have played for Zinedine Zidane after the Real Madrid coach announced his shock departure.

Zidane stepped down from the role on Thursday, less than a week after Madrid beat Liverpool in Kiev to win a third consecutive Champions League title.Ronaldo has been Madrid's talisman during a highly successful period under Zidane's leadership, although the Portugal star has suggested he is considering his future.

And in a social media post, Ronaldo was quick to pay tribute to departing Madrid coach Zidane."I'm just proud of being your player," Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. "Mister, thanks for so much."

Madrid team-mate Isco also posted his tribute, writing on Instagram: "It's been an honour to work with you, to learn from you every single day and to win things together.
"You've managed to make this team historic, I wish you the best of luck."Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal added: "I just want to thank you for these two-and-a-half years as our coach, you've been an incredible professional, as have your staff members."I've learned a lot as a player and a person from you, I wish you the best. Thank you Zidane."

Zidane will definitely coach France, claims Deschamps

Zinedine Zidane will "definitely" coach France at some point, according to the current incumbent Didier Deschamps.Zidane announced his departure from Real Madrid on Thursday, five days after leading Los Blancos to a third consecutive Champions League triumph.

The former France international has signalled his intention to take a break from management, following in the footsteps of former Barcelona bosses Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique.

But Deschamps - whose France contract runs through to 2020 - believes Zidane is a potential successor when he leaves the post."If I will be proud to hand him the keys of the French team? I don't have them," Deschamps joked at a news conference.

"It's up to the president [of the French Football Federation, Noel Le Graet]."I don't know what he [Zidane] decided. I think for now, he wants to enjoy the rest, his family and loved ones."And then after, and as I said, he will definitely be a coach of the French team someday."When? I cannot say. But it seems logical. It will happen when it happens."

Deschamps added he can understand why Zidane - a team-mate when France won the World Cup in 1998 on home soil - opted to go out on a high.
"It's his decision and it must be respected. He had to think for a long time and if he made that decision, he had to be convinced that it was the best for him,"Deschamps said."Looking at what he has achieved over these three years is something fantastic. For him and his club. I don't have all the ins and outs, but I can understand that he made that decision.

"To leave while being at the top, he has that freedom. Some take it, some don't.And some are obliged too. I don't have all the details, but I can understand. The moments and success he has known. We know each other well enough and we have mutual respect."

Wenger ready to feed football addiction with 'ambitious' club

Arsene Wenger has revealed he is already bored of being out of work and wants to be tested at a top club. The Frenchman left Arsenal at the end of the season after 22 years in charge, being replaced by Unai Emery.Wenger maintained he was not planning on retiring when he left north London, and his desire to return to the game has returned much quicker than expected.

The 68-year-old says he feels addicted to football and is already prepared to take on another coaching role because he has grown bored since leaving the Gunners.

"It's exciting now because I can be tested again. That’s what I want in my life," he told beIN SPORTS. "I'm a competitor who wants to be tested."I don’t know what will happen but I’m in front of an empty page and I have to write the next chapter.

"I’m not very gifted to enjoy life and lie on the beach. I envy friends of mine who can do that."Very quickly I've become bored because it's an addiction I have created. I have the addicted gene and you have to live with it."Asked what level of club he would like to work with next, Wenger added: "A big club has to have ambition. To get the fan to wake up and say: ‘Ah, today my team plays and maybe I will see something special’."

'A sad day for Real Madrid' - Perez stunned by Zidane's exit

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez admits it came as a huge shock when Zinedine Zidane told him he will be stepping down as head coach.

Zidane confirmed on Thursday he is leaving the club , just five days on from winning his third Champions League in a row, citing the need for "a change" for him and the team. The 45-year-old's future had come under scrutiny in the weeks leading up to the Champions League final against Liverpool, with Madrid having failed to defend their La Liga title and crashed out of the Copa del Rey to Leganes.

However, Perez claims he had hoped to have Zidane at his side "forever" and was only informed of the former France star's plans on Wednesday.

"As you can imagine, after winning the Champions League, to hear this decision is completely unexpected," he told a news conference. "It's a sad day for me and it also will be for the fans and players of this club."I wanted him as a player and a manager and I wanted him to be next to me forever, but I also know that, when he takes a decision, it's a final decision.

"It was a huge impact for me yesterday when I heard this decision. I would have liked to convince him to stay on but I know what he's like. All I can offer is my love and respect and remind him that this is his home."Perez remains hopeful that Zidane will return to the club in future, having won nine major trophies since taking over in January 2016.

"Nobody can be prepared for news like this," he said. "When I heard, I went to his house to see if he was prepared and he told me completely seriously that he was convinced."I want to thank him for his commitment, his passion, his love, everything he has done for Real Madrid. His behaviour has always been an example for all and he has represented Real Madrid very well.

"I don't want this to be a goodbye, just a 'see you soon'. I've no doubt he will come back but, if he needs to rest, he deserves that."

'World-class France have everything to win World Cup' - Trezeguet backs countrymen to succeed in Russia

David Trezeguet believes France have "everything" required to win the World Cup for a second time.

Former forward Trezeguet was in the France squad when they lifted the trophy on home soil in 1998, before featuring again in a run to the final eight years later.Despite disappointment in more recent tournaments, the ex-Juventus man is confident that the current France squad, led by coach Didier Deschamps, can triumph at Russia 2018

"I think they have the level [to win the tournament]. They have shown their strength," Trezeguet told Omnisport ."Individually, it's a world-class team with a very experienced head coach, both as a coach and as a player. We have everything to see this through.

"Obviously it's a very difficult tournament and the other teams are also ambitious, but I think France have a say." Just as Trezeguet featured alongside the likes of Thierry Henry, Christophe Dugarry and Nicolas Anelka, France again have a wealth of options in attack.

Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud, Kylian Mbappe and Nabil Fekir have all been included in Deschamps' World Cup squad , but Trezeguet is confident his former captain will settle on a front line that will work."Deschamps has a lot of options," he said. "When you see the quality of the players, considering what they do with their clubs, it is obviously a difficult choice to make.

"I personally think that there are some interesting choices to make. He'll find the right players to start well at the World Cup."

'Ronaldo wants to play for Mourinho again' - Man Utd return on the cards for Real Madrid star, claims Capello

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to play for Jose Mourinho and would welcome a return to Manchester United, claims former Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello. The Portuguese superstar has sparked a fresh round of transfer rumours with his comments in the wake of another Champions League triumph.

Ronaldo has offered mixed messages when it comes to his future, with the promise to offer further clarity on his plans in “the next few days” followed by a declaration to Madrid fans during a trophy parade in the Spanish capital that he would see them “next year”.

As uncertainty reins at the Santiago Bernabeu, it could be that the 33-year-old soon follows departed manager Zinedine Zidane through the exits. If he is to do so, then a second stint at Old Trafford has been mooted, with Ronaldo’s mother having revealed that she would prefer her soon to head back to England than take on a new challenge in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

Capello believes a deal could be done this summer, telling Sky Sport Italia: “I think that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to go back to Manchester, to play for United and being coached by his compatriot Mourinho.”

The former Madrid and England boss has also suggested that the Blancos could rekindle their interest in Bayern Munich’s prolific frontman Robert Lewandowski if they are to part with Ronaldo. The Italian added: “Real Madrid would need to recover from Ronaldo's loss in terms of goals scored. The only available name at the moment is Robert Lewandowski.

“[Karim] Benzema might stay, [Florentino] Perez is still a big fan of him.”While Lewandowski would be one option to fill Ronaldo’s boots in Spain, it has been widely reported that PSG star Neymar will be Madrid’s top target if they are forced into the market for attacking reinforcements.

He has been distanced from a move at regular intervals, but a record-breaking bid for the Brazilian could return him to La Liga a year on from leaving Barcelona in a €222 million deal.

Neville: Bale can be Man Utd game-changer like a Messi or Ronaldo

Gareth Bale could be a “game-changer” for Manchester United in the Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo mould, says Gary Neville.

The Real Madrid forward has hinted at a summer move away from the Santiago Bernabeu, with the Wales international admitting after a match-winning performance off the bench in the Champions League final that he needs to be playing “week in, week out”.That has not always been the case in recent years, with injury struggles and fierce competition for places nudging the 28-year-old down the pecking order towards the end of Zinedine Zidane’s reign in the Spanish capital.

Bale has, however, shown on countless occasions – for Tottenham and Madrid – that he boasts match-winning qualities and Neville hopes they will soon be on display at Old Trafford.

The former United defender told BBC Radio Manchester amid the mounting transfer talk: “I’ve got a lot of admiration for him as a player.“I’d like to see Messi play for United or Ronaldo or Neymar or all these players, but the reality is they’ve got to want to come to the club. “That’s the first question that needs to be asked.

“If he wants to come to United then absolutely, yes, because he’s a fantastic player and he is a game changer.“For me every top club is looking for that player who is the difference, who can turn the big games.”

United are expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer, with Jose Mourinho under pressure to deliver following a trophyless campaign in 2017-18.Goal has revealed that the Red Devils are closing on a deal for Porto defender Diogo Dalot, but there is the promise of more to come.

If the right additions can be found, then Neville believes there is cause for optimism regarding potential domestic and European challenges next term.He added: “Once the disappointment finishes for all players and the coaching team and the fans, you always have that optimism for next season.

“That’s the way football always is. You always feel optimistic as a United fan about the next season and what the team can achieve.“I’ve never - whether it be as a player, fan growing up, now today, never not felt optimistic going into a season.
    “I’m positive for next season.”

Lampard proved critics wrong as a player – now he can do the same as a manager

Frank Lampard is used being told he isn't good enough or that he doesn't belong. His first foray into football management with Derby County will be the same.

In 1996 an angry West Ham supporter at the fans' forum confronted his club's manager Harry Redknapp and an 18-year-old Lampard to tell the teenager he wasn't good enough. After Lampard proved himself with the Hammers, many Chelsea fans regarded him as a waste of money after the Blues signed him for £11 million in 2001.

However, the criticism never stuck and the son of West Ham's legendary Frank Lampard Snr went on to prove everyone wrong. Now, Lampard will have the chance to do it again after being named Derby County manager on Thursday, his first coaching position.

At the beginning of his Chelsea days, the naysayers may have been correct: Lampard probably wasn't good enough. In his first season he wasn't as prolific as he would eventually become, scoring seven goals in 53 games.

Roman Abramovich then bought the club and replaced Claudio Ranieri with Jose Mourinho in a revolution that would worry any unproven footballer. But the newly appointed 'Special One' quickly saw something in Lampard, who would go on to become the club's all-time top goalscorer from his role in midfield.

Lampard is one of Chelsea's greatest ever players, but it was work rate and discipline that took him to a level where he would finish second in the Ballon d'Or in 2005, behind just Ronaldinho.

He would continue proving people wrong at the end of his playing days. Few thought he would make such an impact at Manchester City, where he became a key member of a Premier League runner-up side in 2014-15.

Even in MLS at New York City FC, he was criticised for his injury issues as he struggled to stay healthy during a two-season stint. But Lampard still managed to score an impressive 16 goals in 31 total games with the club before retiring at age 38.

After his playing career, Lampard has shown a relentless hunger for football education while working both with coaches and in the media. He has used his TV work with the BBC, BT Sport and Sky Sports to display his immense tactical knowledge. He has simultaneously been working at Chelsea, most notably with their Under-18 manager Jody Morris.

Morris is hugely respected in Chelsea's academy and his unprecedented quadruple win this season with his age group has been noted by many in the football community. He is expected to be appointed as Lampard's assistant at Derby.

Meanwhile, Lampard has his Uefa A Licence and will gain his Pro Licence while in the job at Derby. That immense work ethic combined with Lampard's opportunism has seen him beat more experienced men to a job at a strong Championship club, while Ipswich Town were also thought to be interested in him.

The three-time Chelsea Player of the Year never doubted his ability as a manager and admits that he would one day love to manage the Blues.“I have thought about coaching and I have been working at Chelsea with the academy all year, around my media stuff," Lampard told Goal. “Chelsea, of course, is like a dream job that will be there one day. But that is not always the route that it takes, so it might take me to go somewhere else before I can ever do that.

"We will see, but I certainly have ambitions to do it. How could I not take it if Chelsea offered me the job? Chelsea are my club and I feel like I have a lot to offer. But that’s obviously for other people to decide, for important people, if and when I am ready to do that."Chelsea themselves will soon be replacing Antonio Conte, with Maurizio Sarri the man set to step in for the 2016-17 Premier League winner.

But if Lampard can navigate the turbulent waters of football management at Derby, then he may one day live a dream that is not just his, but that of almost every Chelsea fan.

'Liverpool must go all out for Alisson' - Klopp urged by Nicol to get 'one great player'

Liverpool should be looking to pay whatever it costs to land Roma goalkeeper Alisson, says Steve Nicol, with “one great player” preferable to two “average” ones.

The Reds have already completed the €45 million (£40m/$53m) signing of Brazilian midfielder Fabinho, while a deal for RB Leipzig star Naby Keita will be pushed through on July 1.It is, however, expected that Jurgen Klopp will remain in the market for further reinforcements, with Loris Karius’ nightmare showing in the Champions League final highlighting the need for a new goalkeeper.

Nicol feels Liverpool should be going all in for another Brazil international, with Alisson the next logical addition to a defensive unit which was reinforced by record signing Virgil van Dijk in January.

The former Reds defender told ESPN FC: “We sat here and mulled over the price tag for Van Dijk - did Van Dijk make a difference? My goodness did he make a difference. This team was transformed with Van Dijk in it.“So imagine what would happen if they got Alisson. If you want to go for the big prizes you need to have good players and good players cost money.“But you know what? Liverpool have the money. If you’ve got it, you spend it tomorrow, or in 10 minutes’ time, if you’ve got the opportunity.

“Do you buy two average players or one great player? You buy the great player.”Liverpool have been linked with several high-profile goalkeepers since seeing their current No. 1 make two glaring errors in a 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Owner John Henry has vowed to make funds available to Klopp this summer, with the Reds in a position to pump the money generated from a productive European campaign and the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona back into their squad.

France 3 Italy 1: Les Bleus thrill in Azzurri win

    4CD2F68B00000578-0-image-a-1_1527884125601.jpg

France offered a thrilling glimpse of their World Cup potential with a 3-1 win against European rivals Italy.Samuel Umtiti, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele were on target for Les Bleus at Allianz Riviera on Friday, with Italy captain Leonardo Bonucci replying for the Azzurri.

Mario Balotelli shrugged off pre-match injury concerns but could not add to his goal on a return from a four-year international exile against Saudi Arabia, wasting numerous chances.France took an early lead when Umtiti bundled in a rebound, Griezmann doubling the advantage from the penalty spot inside half an hour after Rolando Mandragora fouled Lucas Hernandez.

Bonucci replied before the interval, but France's rapid front three continued to impress and when Dembele bent a 63rd-minute stunner into the top corner, a fine victory was assured.

Didier Deschamps' side will seek to add to three consecutive friendly wins when they face United States on June 9 in their final World Cup warm-up, while Roberto Mancini continues his rebuilding job when Italy, who did not qualify for Russia 2018, take on Netherlands on Monday.

France made a lively start and scored the opening goal in the eighth minute. A deep Benjamin Pavard cross from the right found Kylian Mbappe at the back post and, though Salvatore Sirigu denied the striker, Umtiti slammed in his second France goal.Passed fit to start, Balotelli blasted a free-kick into the wall before sending an ambitious strike flying wide.

France were playing with startling vitality, however, and N'Golo Kante was unlucky to see a 25-yard low drive fizz against the outside of Sirigu's right-hand post. After the impressive Mbappe sent a powerful shot just off-target, Hernandez beat Mandragora for pace down the left and was dragged down as he entered the penalty area.

Griezmann stepped up to beat Sirigu from 12 yards, although the goalkeeper guessed correctly by diving to his left, the Atletico Madrid striker breaking a four-game international duck.

Italy pulled one back in the 36th minute, captain Bonucci well placed to convert a close-range rebound after Hugo Lloris could only parry a ferocious Balotelli free-kick.Playing on his home ground, Nice striker Balotelli forced a smart stop from Lloris seconds after the restart, the goalkeeper then springing Dembele clear with a long throw and the Barcelona winger clipping the crossbar at the end of a thrilling break.

Dembele fine-tuned his radar and would not be denied with his next effort, however, picking up the pieces after Mattia Caldara halted Mbappe's run to find Sirigu's top-left corner.Balotelli appeared to hurt his right ankle after firing over the crossbar and was replaced after temporarily playing on.

Sirigu denied substitute Florian Thauvin a spectacular 85th-minute fourth, but for Deschamps this was an eye-catching performance with the World Cup less than two weeks away.

'Enough about Balotelli!' - Bonucci frustrated by focus on Italy striker after France defeat

Leonardo Bonucci says it is time to reduce the focus on Italy striker Mario Balotelli after the Azzurri fell to the first defeat of Roberto Mancini's reign against France.

Goals from Samuel Umtiti, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele earned Les Bleus a 3-1 win in Nice on Friday, Bonucci's reply a mere consolation.Balotelli struck on his return from four years in international exile in Mancini's maiden match in charge against Saudi Arabia, but only hit the target with two of his six shots at his home ground, Nice's Allianz Riviera.

And Bonucci, who captained Italy despite Mancini suggesting the armband could go to Balotelli, is fed up with the media's focus on the former AC Milan and Manchester City forward."Enough questions about Balotelli, enough!" Bonucci snapped at Rai Sport post-match. "He makes mistakes like everyone else, he scores goals like everyone else.

"He is working hard, he has gained experience and came here with the right attitude, but enough talking about Balotelli. We are a team, we cannot put too much pressure on him or minimise the impact of all the other players."
France completely outplayed Italy and at times looked like running riot, but Mancini - who offered opportunities to newcomers Mattia Caldara, Rolando Mandragora and Domenico Berardi - sought positives after tasting defeat for the first time.

"This can help to gain experience. Nobody likes to lose, ever, but there were moments where we had the chances to make it 2-2," the Italy coach said to Rai Sport. "Naturally, there is a difference between us and France at the moment."It was a totally different game to Saudi Arabia and the players did very well.

Perhaps the most important thing is that the debutants did well and if we continue like this, in a year we'll be at their level, or close to it."At this moment, unfortunately, France are superior to us and have so many players available to them. We must work and learn to get close to them, but we're on the right track."

Bonucci agrees the future appears brighter for Italy, who failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958. "This team has talent coming through and we can only get stronger," the Milan defender said. "France have enthusiasm and youth, but also a lot of experience with players at top clubs challenging for major honours. I think they are one of the favourites for the World Cup.”

'I'll reveal future before World Cup' - Griezmann confirms decision announcement amid Barcelona links

Antoine Griezmann has revealed he will make an announcement on his club future before the World Cup.

The France international has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona, despite helping Atletico Madrid win the Europa League with two goals in the final against Marseille.Griezmann scored from the penalty spot for Les Bleus in their friendly with Italy on Friday evening and was pressed on his future by reporters in the mixed zone.

He confirmed that his future will be resolved before the World Cup kicks off on June 15."Yes, it will be done before the competition," Griezmann responded when asked would an announcement be made in the next few weeks.

Griezmann has four years remaining on his Atletico contract but speculation suggesting a move to Barcelona has intensified in recent weeks. The 27-year-old scored 29 goals in all competitions for Diego Simeone's side and has been mooted as a summer addition to the Liga champions as manager Ernesto Valverde builds for next season.

Atletico president Enrique Cerezo has denied that Griezmann is for sale, while club-mate Diego Costa also believes the forward will stay at the club, yet a switch to Camp Nou remains a real possibility."He is taking a little time to say what is next for him and I think there is perhaps some doubt on his part," Costa told a news conference.

"He knows that we love him very much and that he is the figurehead here, a very important player. If he stays with us, that would be brilliant."If he leaves, we also must be happy because he's given us a title this season but, in the end, I think he'll stay."

A decision will be made before France kick off their World Cup bid, however, with Les Bleus opening the tournament with a Group C meeting with Australia on June 16.

Brazil 2 Croatia 0: Neymar makes decisive return

    4CE17C3C00000578-5800595-image-a-65_1528040297160.jpg

Neymar scored a superb opening goal in his first match since February as Brazil defeated Croatia 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday. The Paris Saint-Germain star came on at half-time and blasted home in front of the Kop with 69 minutes gone, four years on from his double against the same opponents at the 2014 World Cup, before Roberto Firmino added a late second.

Neymar's strike was a rare moment of quality in a match in which both sets of players seemed eager to keep injury risks to a minimum, with less than two weeks to go until the start of this year's World Cup finals.

Brazil head to Russia as one of the favourites but this was a largely flat display, despite Tite choosing to start Gabriel Jesus, Willian and Philippe Coutinho, making his first appearance at the stadium since leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in January.

Indeed, Croatia had arguably the better of the chances before Neymar produced his moment of magic, collecting Coutinho's pass and dancing into space before finishing from close range in his first appearance since surgery on a broken foot.Firmino struck in the dying seconds to cap a successful outing for Brazil, who face just one more friendly with Austria next Sunday before their World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 17.

Brazil, in their first visit to Merseyside since 1995, started on the front foot but almost fell behind 14 minutes in when Liverpool's Dejan Lovren headed a corner inches wide.Andrej Kramaric caught Thiago Silva with a careless high foot and almost capitalised on the centre-back's struggle to shake off the knock, robbing him of possession before shooting straight at Alisson.

There were three bookings in a surprisingly feisty first half and Neymar's first involvement off the bench saw him side-step a potentially painful lunge from Lovren, who was trying to halt his run.

Brazil were finding it hard to fashion chances despite having close to 69 per cent of the ball, with Alisson again forced into action to parry Ante Rebic's header, as both coaches took the opportunity to make further changes to their sides. That was until Tite's men suddenly exploded into life 69 minutes in. Willian found Coutinho in space, he slid the ball to Neymar and the PSG man did the rest, facing up to Sime Vrsaljko before cutting onto his right foot and blasting high into the net.

Coutinho earned a warm reception from the Anfield crowd as he was replaced late on by Fred, who has been tipped to complete a move to Manchester United in the coming days.

It was a current Liverpool hero who sealed a stylish end to the match, though, Firmino chesting down Casemiro's flighted pass before lifting a neat finish over Danijel Subasic with practically the last kick of the game.

'He's still got it!' - Neymar makes scoring return for Brazil after three-month injury absence

Mohamed Salah has posted a positive social media update on his injury recovery ahead of the World Cup.The Liverpool star exited last weekend's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in tears after hurting his shoulder when he landed awkwardly following a challenge from Sergio Ramos.

More than half a million people subsequently signed a petition calling for the Madrid captain to face punishment over the incident.Liverpool and Egypt have indicated Salah's recovery is likely to take around three weeks, leaving the 25-year-old a potential doubt for the June 15 opener against Uruguay.
