Pastore to undergo medical as €20m Roma switch from PSG nears

Javier Pastore will land in Italy on Monday to complete a €20 million (£18m/$23m) move to Roma. The Argentine has been looking for a move away from Paris Saint-Germain this summer after being limited to just 14 starts in Ligue 1 last season and flirted with a switch to West Ham, while Liverpool had been linked to him recently.

However, the 29-year-old is set to return to Italy after Roma reached an agreement with the French champions in a deal that includes an extra €4m in bonuses,

The former Palermo star will undergo a medical on Tuesday before signing a four or five-year contract worth €4m per season with Eusebio Di Francesco's team.Pastore joined PSG from Palermo in 2011 and has made almost 270 appearances, and is entering the final season of his contract.

Pastore is the latest summer signing for the ambitious Serie A side, who have already lured Justin Kluivert from Ajax and signed Ante Coric from Dinamo Zagreb. The Stadio Olimpico outfit are expected to keep adding to the team that finished third in Serie A last term - 18 points behind champions Juventus.

Di Francesco's side are said to be very close to landing 18-year-old centre-back William Bianda, who made five Ligue 2 appearances for Lens last season.

'He's too expensive!' - Dortmund rule out Morata bid

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc says Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata is too expensive for the club, as they continue to search for a replacement for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.Dortmund sold Aubameyang to Arsenal in January, and are focusing their efforts on recruiting another centre-forward this summer.

Morata endured a difficult debut season at Chelsea following his move from Juventus, scoring 15 goals in all competitions in 48 appearances.

Zorc believes it will be incredibly hard for Dortmund to extract the Spaniard from Stamford Bridge after he cost an initial £58 million ($76.8m) last summer.

"I would say that Morata is too expensive - without knowing exact sums," he told Bild. His statement on Morata feeds into a wider frustration regarding the state of the current transfer market, with fees as inflated as they have ever been.

And Zorc admits that he and Dortmund would have rather kept Aubameyang than be forced to find a replacement."Of course, we have candidates in mind," he said, when asked about replacing the Gabon international.

"But the position of a true centre-forward is currently the most difficult to fill in European football. That's why we've resisted selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a very long time because he guaranteed us goals."At the moment I have the impression that the transfer market - not only in the case of strikers - is a bit out of touch with the realities.

"Very high prices are called. We have to act with caution and not do crazy things. Especially as we have players in our squad who also have this position in their portfolio."

Liverpool star Salah apologises to Egypt fans after World Cup disappointment

Egypt star Mohamed Salah has apologised to fans after seeing his nation eliminated from the World Cup without a single point.

Salah went into the Russia finals with doubts over his fitness after injuring his shoulder in a clash with Sergio Ramos during Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in May .

The Liverpool forward missed out on a narrow opening defeat to Uruguay, before hitting a penalty in his World Cup debut as Egypt lost out to Russia in a 3-1 reverse.

The Africans' misery was compounded in Group A's dead rubber on Monday , with Salah's early goal overturned by Saudi Arabia to seal a record of three losses in as many games.

Reports from Russia suggest that the latest defeat led to angry scenes in the Egypt dressing room after full time, with an irritated Salah alleged to have been the first to board the team bus.

But Salah has vowed to return to international football's biggest stage as he begged disappointed Egypt fans for forgiveness."We want to apologise to all the Egyptian fans who came to support us here in the three matches, I know it is difficult for them, like us," the 26-year-old stated.

"I just want to say that Egypt reached the World Cup after 28 years, some players here do not have the required experience. Thanks to all of them and we will back again in 2022."This World Cup marked the first time that the Pharoahs had reached the finals since 1990, which in turn marked their first appearance since the second tournament back in 1934.

Egypt are still waiting for their maiden win at the finals, having drawn two and lost five of their World Cup games to date.Coach Hector Cuper was forced to deny rumours that Salah would leave the Egypt national team after the 2-1 defeat to Arab rivals Saudi Arabia, and wouldn't comment on why his star player hadn't turned up to the scheduled press conference.

"I don't know why Salah is not here," he told reporters. "He was with the doctor but I can't confirm why he isn't here."Problems within the squad? I don’t know what you mean. As far as I know there have not been problems.

"I don't think [Salah will quit]. I don't think it's true because all those who are here really appreciate the opportunity. I don't think that's true."

'Very ambitious' Eriksen ready for Barcelona or Real Madrid move, says Olsen

Christian Eriksen is ready for a move to either Barcelona or Real Madrid, according to his former Denmark manager Morten Olsen. After initially making his name at Ajax following a move from OB as a teenager, Eriksen moved to the Premier League with Tottenham in the summer of 2013.

In his five years in England, he has been ever-present for Spurs and has established himself as one of the best creative playmakers in the Premier League. This has fuelled talk that the likes of Barcelona may be after his signature, and Olsen believes the 26-year-old is ready for a move to one of the heavyweights of world football.

“I think that he was in a very good school, at Ajax,” Olsen told Goal. “But, the most important thing for the players is to play matches. And I think he chose very well by signing for Tottenham. They are always a club which plays good football.

“He is growing, and he is also better in the national team because every Sunday he is used to playing against the best and top players. When you learn from mistakes you’re growing. And he is a fantastic human being, very ambitious. “He is already a top player, and he is ready for a team like Barcelona or Real Madrid. And, for the Danish national team, he is very important.”

Eriksen’s hat-trick in the second leg of the play-off against the Republic of Ireland helped Denmark to the World Cup finals and he has been quick make an impact in Russia, creating the only goal against Peru and then scoring in the draw against Australia.Denmark now need a point against France in their final group game to guarantee a place in the last 16, with Andreas Christiansen another Premier League player to have made his presence felt in the World Cup.

Christiansen impressed during his breakthrough year with Chelsea and Olsen believes that the centre-half has all the attributes required to become a leading centre-half.Olsen added: “He will be surely a top player. He is in a situation where he can play a lot of big games, in the Premier League and Champions League. And these are good tests and he can only get better.”

A last 16 match against Croatia, Nigeria, Iceland or Argentina will await Denmark if they avoid defeat to France, or Australia fail to beat Peru.

:love:Spain 2 Morocco 2: La Roja top group despite dramatic draw

    WUxIzXc.jpg

Spain booked a last-16 World Cup clash with hosts Russia after a last-gasp 2-2 draw against already eliminated Morocco in Kaliningrad. The 2010 champions started Monday on top of Group B but seemed certain to slip below their Iberian rivals in the final table as both matches entered stoppage-time with Portugal and Morocco leading.

Spain went behind when Andres Iniesta and captain Sergio Ramos somehow allowed Khalid Boutaib to seize upon a loose ball and run clear to score Morocco's first goal at the finals since 1998.

Iniesta soon made amends, though, skipping through the Morocco defence to set up Isco for a quickfire leveller, with La Roja unable to break down their opponents despite dominating. When Morocco substitute Youssef En-Nesyri got up highest to thump home a brilliant header from a Faycal Fajr corner with nine minutes to go, Herve Renard's men looked set to claim a memorable victory.

But after another substitute, Iago Aspas, tucked in a superbly improvised finish that survived a lengthy VAR review for offside, while Iran struck a late penalty, La Roja somehow finished top of the group.

Spain showed signs of their bewitching best in possession but Fernando Hierro's side must show serious improvement in the knockout stages if they have ambitions to claim their second World Cup.

A testy start to the game saw Gerard Pique perhaps fortunate to avoid punishment for a two-footed lunge on Boutaib.Morocco's lone forward then gave his side a shock lead in the 14th minute, capitalising on a terrible mix-up between Ramos and Iniesta.

The duo's shared lapse in concentration allowed Boutaib to steal possession on the halfway line, burst through on goal and slot a neat finish through the legs of David de Gea.

That goal proved Spain's wake-up call, Iniesta and Diego Costa combining quite brilliantly to set up Isco for a slammed close-range finish that levelled the scores five minutes later. Boutaib scampered clear again in the 25th minute when Morocco took a quick throw-in, but De Gea - beaten from all four shots on target he had faced at the World Cup - stayed tall to save.

Morocco threatened to lose their discipline with Nordin Amrabat, Manuel da Costa and Moubarak Boussoufa all booked in a tempestuous three-minute period before Sergio Busquets planted a free header from Isco's corner over the crossbar.

Pique was lucky again early in the second half when the defender appeared to handle the ball in the box, with Morocco agonisingly close to regaining the lead in the 55th minute.Given space to let fly from at least 25 yards out, Amrabat's strike had De Gea completely beaten but the goalkeeper gratefully saw the ball bounce off the woodwork.

Isco thought he had added to his nine Spain goals scored since the start of 2017 with his looping header dipping under the crossbar, but Romain Saiss made a sensational clearance, Pique heading wide from the resulting Isco corner.

Hierro introduced Marco Asensio and Aspas as Spain sought a late winner but Morocco's determined defending held them at bay.Although only Iran shocking Portugal could have dumped Spain out, En-Nesyri thundered home a stunning header that left De Gea helpless again.

And when Aspas turned home Dani Carvajal's cross after a short corner - the goal given by VAR after a long delay, Spain were level in the first minute of added time. With more high drama elsewhere - Karim Ansarifard smashing home an equalising spot-kick for Iran - Spain leapfrogged Portugal to Group B's summit and will now play Russia in the last 16.

Iran 1 Portugal 1: Santos' men survive late Saransk scare after Ronaldo penalty miss

    4DA0F8AE00000578-5884095-image-a-8_1529956847448.jpg

Mehdi Taremi wasted a gilt-edged chance after Karim Ansarifard's penalty had thrown Iran a lifeline, but Portugal survived with a 1-1 draw to make the World Cup last 16 despite Cristiano Ronaldo's missed spot-kick in a match dominated by VAR.

The usually prolific Ronaldo was off target with a 53rd-minute penalty, awarded after a video-assisted review, as Portugal failed to build on Ricardo Quaresma's first-half stunner in the crucial Group B contest.

That miss from Ronaldo, who was perhaps fortunate not to see red for another VAR check after swinging an arm into the face of Morteza Pouraliganji, was punished when Cedric Soares was pinged for handball after referee Enrique Caceres again went to his video monitor.

Unlike Ronaldo, Ansarifard made no mistake with a powerful finish into the roof of the net to set up a grandstand finish in Saransk. But Taremi fluffed his lines in the dying embers, firing into the side-netting from close range as Portugal held out for a crucial point.

It means the European champions are into the last 16 in second place, behind Spain – who themselves secured a dramatic 2-2 draw with Morocco – only on goals scored, while Iran settle for third with four points.
