'Kane is England's Messi or Ronaldo' - Spurs striker inside world's top five, says Redknapp

Harry Kane is England’s answer to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, says Jamie Redknapp, with the Tottenham striker one of the top five players in world football.Having starred at club level over recent years, collecting two Premier League Golden Boots for Spurs, the 24-year-old is now considered to be “the talisman” for his country.

Gareth Southgate has handed Kane the captain’s armband for England’s World Cup 2018 campaign, and he has led by example with five goals en route to the last 16.

That haul has included a hat-trick against Panama, with the Three Lions now looking to their prolific skipper to guide them past Colombia and cement a standing among the global elite.

Former England midfielder Redknapp expects Kane to continue leading a charge for glory in Russia, telling Sky Sports News: "He is our Messi, our Ronaldo. He is the talisman, the person we will be looking at to score and to make that difference."He is leading by example. He is the player that everyone is talking about - wherever you go at the moment, people from all around the world.

"He has gone to another level and elevated his game. Not only that but as a person and everyone thinks he is one of the best players in the world now - he is in the top five and things can only get better."

While Kane has been the key man for England, complementing his treble against Panama with a match-winning brace in an opening contest with Tunisia, Southgate has also drawn plenty of praise for the manner in which he has set about instilling belief and a positive attitude within the Three Lions camp.

Redknapp added on the man at the helm: "They have played with no fear and I always think that has been a major problem with England in the World Cups and European Championships the last three or four campaigns.

"You can see the players have been transfixed by fear, it has almost taken over them, and that has sometimes come from the top."When you go into the games, how you portray the team - if you are so worried about the press - that is only going to transmit to the players.

"Gareth has said 'we are going to embrace this, enjoy it, play' and hopefully they carry on doing this because at the moment, and I think I speak for everybody when I say this, the whole country has fallen in love with England again."We have an unbelievable opportunity to do something very special. I look at that squad and I get really jealous and think I would love to be in that squad.

"It looks like it is great fun, they are all playing for each other, with freedom and that is the greatest compliment I could give them. That is what Gareth Southgate has created so far."

'Fellaini isn't final title jigsaw piece for Man Utd' - Neville supports new contract but only in squad role

Marouane Fellaini will “contribute” for Manchester United after signing a new two-year contract but can hardly be considered “the final piece” of a title-winning jigsaw, says Gary Neville.

After several months of uncertainty regarding his future plans, the Belgium international has committed his immediate future to the Red Devils by penning fresh terms. He had been poised to drop into the free agent pool, with Premier League rivals Arsenal among those reported to be keen on acquiring the versatile performer.

Neville believes retaining the 30-year-old is good business for United, as he has proved to be a useful asset under Jose Mourinho, but more is required if a challenge for the Premier League crown is to be sustained in 2018-19.The former Red Devils defender told Sky Sports: “Well he [Mourinho] wanted to keep him as a part of the club.

“There was talk about if he was leaving, from my point of view it wouldn’t have made too much difference. “I don’t think he’s the final piece of the jigsaw which gets Manchester United back to winning the title.

“He is someone, who within a squad of 22 players, can contribute during a season.
“There’s always a lot of exposure of Marouane Fellaini in his position at Manchester United.“The reality is he does contribute during the season - if they needed to go long in a game, he can do it.“If he is part of a midfield pool of four or five players, then I’m satisfied with that.”

United have already bolstered their midfield ranks this summer with the £52.5 million ($70m) signing of Brazil international Fred. They have, however, lost Michael Carrick to retirement, so further additions are expected.

Mourinho is currently away on punditry duty at World Cup 2018, though, with recruitment drives across the globe set to be stepped up once the action in Russia comes to a close.

Sampaoli: Argentina tried everything to bring the best out of Messi

Argentina “tried everything” to bring the best out of Lionel Messi during a disappointing 2018 World Cup campaign, claims Jorge Sampaoli.

The Albiceleste headed to Russia hopeful that a talismanic presence could provide the inspiration which allowed them to deliver collective reward for their finest individual.Messi was, however, to struggle alongside many of his team-mates , with the 31-year-old managing just one goal at a tournament which also saw him miss a penalty and bow out at the last 16 stage.

He was deployed in a false nine role against France in the second round, but was largely contained by Les Bleus as they came out on top in a 4-3 epic.

Sampaoli, who is set to face more uncomfortable questions on the back of a frustrating exit, told reporters on his efforts to get Messi firing: “We have the best player in the world and we had to try to create collective situations to really use that player who can have many brilliant moments.“We tried many different tactics — surround him, create space for him ... we tried to use everything we had to allow him to do what he can do.

“Sometimes we managed it, sometimes we didn’t.”While he failed to find Messi’s spark, Sampaoli does not consider his time at the helm to have been a letdown.

He added: "I don't like the word failure, but it's very frustrating because in every training I try to develop an identity for my team."I don't think there were many differences in the development of the game between the teams. They went for counters and we went for possession.

"I think Argentina really fought, France scored three in the second half, but we fought and had opportunities and almost equalised."It's not ideal and I'd have maybe preferred them to work differently, but that’s the way it is.

"Maybe the reason [for a lack of cohesion] is because we didn't have so much time, but I'm convinced Argentinian football has very good players and very good young players and we must work with them to be one of the best again."Sampaoli also believes that the tests he has faced in World Cup qualification and at the event itself will help to make him a better coach in the future.

The former Chile and Sevilla boss said: "I feel very frustrated because I was very excited to be here."I had many expectations, I wanted Argentina to go as far as possible, we had an exciting project.

"I really want to move everyone with this idea. I always believed Argentina could win, so of course I feel a certain frustration, but it'll make me stronger as coach, it'll help me grow and learn."

'Cristiano still has a lot to give to football' - Ronaldo expected to join Portugal's Nations League plans

Cristiano Ronaldo “still has a lot to give football”, says Fernando Santos, with Portugal expecting their skipper to report for UEFA Nations League duty.

Questions are being asked of the Real Madrid star’s international future on the back of another frustrating World Cup campaign.Portugal bowed out of Russia 2018 on Saturday, with Uruguay prevailing 2-1 in the last-16 encounter courtesy of a brilliant brace from Edinson Cavani.

Ronaldo, at 33 years of age, is yet to state in public whether he will be adding to his 154 caps, but his manager believes he will be back for more."Cristiano still has a lot to give to football," the Euro 2016-winning coach told reporters.

"There is a tournament in September and we hope Cristiano will be with us to help the players grow." Portugal are due to open their quest for Nations League glory against Italy on September 7.They will also face Poland in Group 3 as the new competition which contributes towards Euro 2020 qualification throws open its doors.

Ronaldo has plenty of time to weigh up his options before then, with a well-earned break set to carry the five-time Ballon d’Or winner towards the 2018-19 campaign. As things stand, that season will see him once again leading the line in Madrid.

He did, however, hint at a possible summer move after landing a fifth Champions League crown in May and continues to be linked with a return to Manchester United or big-money transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.

Ronaldo will be eager to hit the ground running wherever he ends up, with his World Cup having come to a frustrating close.

Drawing a blank against Uruguay means that one of the finest players of all-time is still looking for his first goal in the knockout stages of football’s showpiece event.

His eternal rival Lionel Messi finds himself in the same boat, with the Argentina international having also tasted last-16 heartache on Saturday as the Albiceleste went down 4-3 in a thrilling clash with France.

Tabarez unsure if Cavani will be fit for World Cup quarter-final

Edinson Cavani's injury is a worry for Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez after the striker played a starring role in his side's victory over Portugal at the World Cup.

Cavani hit both goals in a 2-1 win that ensured Cristiano Ronaldo followed Argentina's Lionel Messi in exiting the tournament at the last-16 stage. The Paris Saint-Germain striker, however, then limped out of the action - with Ronaldo helping him off the pitch - and was replaced after 74 minutes.

The player told reporters after the final whistle he hurt his calf and Tabarez conceded he is unsure whether Cavani will be fit to face France in Friday's quarter-final."He was injured. He felt pain," Tabarez said at a news conference.

"I don't know exactly. I haven't spoken to the medical team. We won't have a lot of time for recovery. "After resting, we will see what we have to do. Right now, we're only worried but we don’t know for sure how grave the injury is."

Uruguay and France don't play until Friday, giving the 31-year-old nearly a week to get fit, though his country will be nervously waiting for the results of medical scans

Mbappe makes history by rivalling Pele goal feat with brace against Argentina

The France forward became the first teenager to score a brace at the World Cup since the legendary Brazilian delivered one in the 1958 final
Kylian Mbappe’s two goals not only proved the difference in France’s 4-3 victory over Argentina in the World Cup round of 16 , they also put him alongside arguably the greatest ever to play the game.

The teenager turned heads across the world with his blistering pace in the first half, running past Argentina defenders on a counter and earning a penalty when Marcos Rojo pulled him down in the area.

Antoine Griezmann stepped up to score the penalty to give France a 1-0 lead, but Mbappe’s day was far from done.

He would win a dangerous free kick later in the first half and then finally found the back of the net in the second half.

With the game tied 2-2, Mbappe used his skill on the ball to play himself into space in the area off a deflection. Then he turned on his pace to beat the defence and free himself up for a chance on Argentina goalkeeper Franco Armani. He buried the chance to give France the 3-2 advantage.

That goal was momentous enough for Mbappe, who became the first teenager to score two goals at a World Cup finals since Michael Owen did so for England in 1998.

Mbappe kept coming however. Four minutes after that, Olivier Giroud played a ball into space at the edge of the Argentina. Mbappe ran onto it and unleashed a low drive that beat Armani and settled into the back of the net to make it 4-2 France, and all but book his nation’s place in the quarter-finals.

And with it, Mbappe also joined some elite company.

While Mbappe faced off against a legend of the game in Messi, he matched another. No teenager had managed a brace in the World Cup in 60 years. The last one who did so, back in the 1958 World Cup, was Pele.

Pele actually did it twice in the 1958 tournament – first against France in the semi-finals, when he scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 victory.

Then he did it again in the final, scoring twice in a 5-2 victory over Sweden which saw Brazil crowned champions for the first time.

France will no doubt hope that a similar fortune awaits them as they move on to the next round to face off against either Uruguay or Portugal.
