:(Spain 1 Russia 1 (aet, 4-3 on penalties): Akinfeev the shoot-out hero in huge World Cup shock

    4DD27EB600000578-5906345-image-a-75_1530464259814.jpg

Igor Akinfeev was Russia's hero after saving two penalties in a shoot-out to sensationally dump Spain out of the World Cup and book the hosts a place in the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw in Moscow.Koke and Iago Aspas were denied by the Russia goalkeeper as 2010 champions Spain, who dominated possession without creating clear chances, were defeated 4-3 on penalties.

Sergei Ignashevich became the oldest scorer of an own goal in World Cup history when the 38-year-old gave Spain an early lead at the Luzhniki Stadium.A right-wing Isco cross isolated Ignashevich and Sergio Ramos at the back post, the Russia defender turning the ball home via his heel as he desperately tried to block his opponent's run.

But Russia drew level in the 41st minute, Artem Dzyuba smashing home a penalty after his header was blocked by Gerard Pique's arm in the box.A stodgy Spain could not break the hosts down and were denied a penalty following a VAR review in extra-time, sending the tie to a shoot-out.

Akinfeev saved a terrible Koke penalty to put Russia in control and with David de Gea unable to stop any of the four kicks he faced, Aspas' effort was brilliantly blocked by the goalkeeper to spark chaotic celebrations.

Aleksandr Golovin's early break down the right raised excitement levels among Russia's loud following, but his cross was blocked and Aleksandr Samedov's resulting corner was too deep. Spain then took the lead from a more accurate set-piece in the 12th minute.Isco's free-kick from deep on the right saw Ignashevich grappling with Ramos at the back post, the ball inadvertently bouncing past Akinfeev off the veteran defender's heel, although Spain's captain tried to claim the goal.

Spain were dominating possession but complacency edged into their game and the next big chance fell to Russia in the 36th minute, Golovin bending a shot wide after Dzyuba held off Ramos to win a header.

And Russia were then gifted a penalty when Pique handled in the box.Dzyuba - whose header was blocked by the defender's arm - crashed home from 12 yards to send the sides into half-time level after Akinfeev did well to deny Diego Costa.Jordi Alba and Costa missed efforts after the restart as Spain tried to increase their tempo.

Russia coach Stanislav Cherchesov could smell a major upset, introducing Villarreal midfielder Denis Cheryshev, who hit three goals in the group stage, while Spain sent for Andres Iniesta, who had started 21 consecutive matches at international tournaments. And it was Iniesta who almost came up with the winner in the 85th minute, Akinfeev getting down low to his right to save, the goalkeeper then denying Iago Aspas on the rebound.

Akinfeev claimed Pique's header and pushed away a Rodrigo Moreno shot in extra-time, while the introduction of Aleksandr Erokhin as Russia's fourth substitute made World Cup history.Pique and Ramos both appeared to be held from a set-piece but, after a VAR check, referee Bjorn Kuipers waved away Spain's desperate appeals.

Host nations had won each of their last four shoot-outs and when Akinfeev easily kept out a tame Koke effort, Russia were on track for one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history.De Gea's miserable World Cup was complete as he was beaten by all four Russia penalties, piling the pressure on Aspas, who saw his effort diverted away by the leg of home hero Akinfeev.

Russia's first win over Spain since the breakup of the Soviet Union books the hosts a place in the quarter-finals, where either Denmark or Croatia await.

France star Mbappe earns Caniggia comparison from World Cup icon Maradona

France forward Kylian Mbappe's stunning display against Argentina earned a comparison to a young Claudio Caniggia from Diego Maradona.

Mbappe was in sensational form as France came from behind to beat Argentina 4-3 in the last 16 at Russia 2018, becoming the first teenager to score more than once in a World Cup match since Pele in 1958.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward showed incredible speed as he drew a foul from Marcos Rojo to earn a penalty that Antoine Griezmann converted, before his double put Les Bleus out of sight in Kazan.

Maradona sees shades of his former Boca Juniors team-mate Caniggia, a World Cup runner-up with Argentina in 1990 and a Copa America champion the following year, in Mbappe.

"Argentina went out to attack France and made the mistake of leaving a lot of room for Mbappe, who is like Caniggia in his early days," he told teleSUR."[Rojo] let him enter the area and then knocked him down. That's not what a national team player should do.

"He had to go straight to the body and knock him down before Mbappe moved the ball forward."Maradona highlighted Argentina's difficulties in attack, with Lionel Messi deployed as a false nine between Angel Di Maria and Cristian Pavon against France.

"We do not know how to attack, we do not know what to do when we have the ball. France are different: they have a counter-attack, variation, they have options on the right and the left," he said.

"I saw Messi very isolated, away from the box. I said if he played as a nine he had to go looking for the ball, link the play, set goals up and score them."Then we are talking more about Patoruzu [an Argentine comic character that possesses superhuman physical strength] than Messi."

Griezmann: Uruguay will be boring like Atletico

Antoine Griezmann is expecting France to come up against a Uruguay side in the World Cup quarter-finals which adopts a similar “boring” mindset to his club employers Atletico Madrid.Les Bleus thrilled a global audience when booking their place in the last eight of Russia 2018, with a 4-3 classic against Argentina carrying them one step closer to the ultimate prize.

Uruguay, in contrast, battled their way to a 2-1 victory over Portugal, with two stunning goals from Edinson Cavani getting the job done before he was forced from the field with an untimely knock.

The South American outfit are renowned for their dogged approach to defence, with Cavani and Luis Suarez providing an attacking spark, and Griezmann expects more of the same on Friday from a side which includes two of his club team-mates, Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez.

The Atletico frontman told reporters on the next challenge facing France: “Uruguay will be like Atletico, they will take their time, fall, go to the referee.“We will have to get used to that because the match will be boring and they will want to bring us into that.”

Griezmann added on Paris Saint-Germain star Cavani, who limped out of a win over Portugal with a muscle complaint: “He's the best forward according to my thinking.“He makes 10,000 calls, works for the team, and if he's injured they will change a lot, he got both goals [against Portugal].”

While Uruguay are sweating on the fitness of their star frontman, France are ready to unleash Cavani’s club colleague Kylian Mbappe. The teenager starred against Argentina, netting twice to emulate a record set by Brazil icon Pele 60 years ago, and more of the same is expected from the youngster heading forward.

Griezmann said of a team-mate attracting plenty of praise : “It's up to us to put him in the right conditions and do everything to make him feel good on the pitch. They [Uruguay] will probably defend differently against him.

“It is a quarter-final and he is just 19 years old. He was quiet in the locker room and the tunnel. His maturity impresses me. He is always listening, it's great for us.“When he wants to score even more, to hurt teams, he'll be a top player. He will rise up the game. It's up to us to give him the right balls.”

France were able to do that against Argentina, with the Albiceleste struggling to do likewise with their own talisman as Lionel Messi was kept surprisingly quiet.Griezmann added on that containing job: “I was surprised that Argentina played without strikers, with [Gonzalo] Higuain and [Sergio] Aguero on the bench, but it was [Jorge] Sampaoli who made his choices.

“We had to manage the [Javier] Mascherano-Messi and [Ever] Banega-Messi connections. We did it well.”

Rooney: This could be England's year to win the World Cup

Wayne Rooney believes this could be the year that England end their long wait for World Cup glory, with the Three Lions generating plenty of positivity at Russia 2018.

Free of the expectation which weighed heavy on the ‘Golden Generation’ and over the disappointment of recent shambolic showings, Gareth Southgate’s side are steadily building momentum.

A 1-0 defeat to Belgium in their final group game has already been shrugged off, with it widely acknowledged that finishing second was of greater benefit – hence the sweeping changes made by both sides in what was a dead rubber.

England are now readying themselves for a last-16 showdown with Colombia and Rooney, as a former captain of his country and all-time leading goalscorer, believes anything is possible from this point.

A man who has recently completed a move to MLS side D.C. United told Fox Sports: “There's some big teams gone out of the World Cup and this could be the year England can go far and hopefully win it.“I think certainly the first two games they were excellent.

“It's been refreshing to see a lot of young players, a lot of energy, a lot of high pressing, and they're scoring goals and exciting as well. It's an exciting time to be an England fan.

“The game against Belgium was a bit of a game which probably no one wanted to win.“Losing the game might actually benefit England to go further in the World Cup, to be on the right side of the draw, which I believe they are.”

A Harry Kane brace edged England past Tunisia in their opening fixture, before the Tottenham striker then went one better as he netted a hat-trick in a 6-1 mauling of Panama.

Defeat to Belgium has left the Three Lions in the bottom half of the draw, clear of the likes of France, Uruguay and Brazil.Victory over Colombia would set up a quarter-final showdown with either Switzerland or Sweden, with it likely that Spain or Croatia would then be faced in the last four.

There is a long way to go before contests such as that can be considered, but Rooney is not alone in suggesting that a first international honour since 1966 could be on the cards for England’s class of 2018.
