Vida: Croatia can win the World Cup

Domagoj Vida and Croatia have set their sights on winning the World Cup as they prepare to face hosts Russia in Sochi on Saturday.Semi-finalists at France 98, Croatia are on track to at least match that feat ahead of their quarter-final showdown with Russia at Fisht Stadium.

Boasting the likes of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Ivan Perisic, Croatia are seen as dark horses to hoist the trophy aloft in Moscow on July 15.

And confidence is high within the squad after edging Denmark, according to experienced defender Vida."It wasn't our best game. It brought a lot of pressure, especially after loss to Portugal at Euro 2016. We wanted this win a lot. It wasn't easy," the 29-year-old told reporters."Now the pressure is off a bit. We would like to of course beat Russia and, God willing, go all the way to the end. We are close. Our plan is not to stop now." Croatia goalkeeper Danijel Subasic was the hero against Denmark as the Balkan nation prevailed 3-2 in a shoot-out following a 1-1 draw.

Subasic – who broke down in tears after being asked about his t-shirt dedicated to Hrvoje Custic following the midfielder's tragic death in 2008 – kept out three penalties in a stunning display after extra time.

"We're thankful for what he [Subasic] did [against Denmark]," Vida said. "But it's a team sport and every game brings a different hero."The important thing was that we beat Denmark. Our goals are higher.God willing we would like to lift the World Cup trophy. That's what we're here for."

Croatia endured a difficult World Cup qualifying campaign, having parted with Ante Cacic following a 1-1 draw against Finland in October.Asked about Croatia's turnaround as they eye a final-four berth, Vida added: "We were in a bad situation at the end of qualifying but we knew of our quality and players in our team.

"With each win our confidence is growing. We believe we can go all the way here in Russia. The support back home is giving us additional energy."

Neymar or Mbappe for Real Madrid? Valdano makes his transfer pick

Real Madrid have been told advised to snap up Kylian Mbappe during any summer raid on Paris Saint-Germain, with Jorge Valdano considering the Frenchman to be preferable to Neymar.

The Blancos have long been linked with a move for the Brazil international, with speculation having rumbled on since the former Barcelona star completed a record-breaking €222 million switch to France in the summer of 2017.

That interest is reported to have been stepped up during World Cup 2018, although Madrid have moved to distance themselves from talk of a €310m (£275m/$360m) bid being tabled.

Valdano can understand why Real are interested in Neymar, with his commercial value as important as his sporting ability, but feels that the best option on PSG’s books would be Mbappe – with the teenage striker currently starring in Russia on a global stage.

The former Blancos player and coach told Onda Cero: “Neymar would have plenty of value in terms of both marketing and football.“I think Madrid have interest in him, but I do not know about any offers or any potential bids but it would be nearly impossible to sign a player who can sell a lot like him.

“I would prefer if they go for Mbappe as he would be a long-term investment because he is six years younger and is already at the top level.“He scores lot of goals, plays direct attacking football, breaks through defences and he will define the next decade of football, he reminds me of Ronaldo Nazario.“I believe Mbappe is also a good person.”

Mbappe is due to complete a €180m move to PSG this summer, with Monaco having sanctioned an initial loan deal for 2017-18.

Madrid were keen before that agreement was reached, with a fee having been agreed to take him to Spain.Monaco’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev told Canal+: "I remember we were training when we got the call from Real Madrid and accepted the €180m offer for Mbappe.

"Later, I saw him and told him 'we have received an offer that was impossible to refuse from the club of your dreams so tell me your answer'. We never wanted to make the choice for him, it was up to him to make his decision.

"He told me that he wanted to go to Paris and, after that, there were so many details that had to be resolved that, until the final moments, I doubted the deal."It could be that Real’s interest is rekindled, but PSG are reluctant to part with any of their prized assets and will be doing their utmost to fend off any interest in Neymar and Mbappe.

Man Utd complete signing of goalkeeper Grant

    4DE3DC6F00000578-5913735-image-a-2_1530640795267.jpg

Manchester United have completed the signing of Lee Grant from Stoke City, opening the door for third-choice goalkeeper Joel Pereira to head out on loan for the 2018-19 season.

The 35-year-old, who previously had two spells with Derby County and has also kept goal for Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley, has impressed in the Premier League over the past two years with Stoke.

His one-man show at Old Trafford in October 2016 drew the praise of United boss Jose Mourinho, but he made only three league appearances last season after being ranked as the Potters’ number two keeper behind Jack Butland.

Stoke were eventually relegated under Paul Lambert after the Scot replaced former United striker Mark Hughes in charge at the bet365 Stadium.

And United have been on the lookout for a suitable third-choice to complement David de Gea and Sergio Romero after deciding to give Pereira the opportunity to play games elsewhere.Pereira played only 12 minutes of senior action last season in coming on as a late substitute against Burton Albion in the League Cup, and his regular involvement in matchday activity with the first team also reduced him to only two reserve outings.

That has resulted in the 22-year-old, who Mourinho regards as the best Portuguese goalkeeper of his generation, asking to be allowed out on loan in order to gain more experience. A number of clubs across the continent are thought to have sounded out United regarding a short-term deal for the former Rochdale and Belenenses loanee.United also bade farewell to Sam Johnstone this week after the 25-year-old completed a £6.5 million switch to West Bromwich Albion.

Johnstone had spent the last 18 months on loan with Aston Villa, making 70 appearances for Steve Bruce’s side as they reached the Championship play-off final before losing out to Fulham in May.His fee could eventually rise to around £10 million depending on his achievements at The Hawthorns.

Low to stay as Germany manager despite World Cup humiliationgrant dailymail

Joachim Low is set to stay on as Germany coach, despite their World Cup humiliation in Russia. The reigning world champions were eliminated at the group stage, finishing bottom of a group comprising Mexico, Sweden and South Korea.

Despite the win over their European rivals, losses to Mexico and South Korea have prompted much soul searching in Germany and led to intense speculation over the future of Low.

However, the German Football Association (DFB) have confirmed that he will stay at the helm, with many reports suggesting that he signed a new contract before the tournament began.

"I am very grateful for the confidence that the DFB has in me, and despite the justified criticism of our elimination, I also feel support and encouragement," Low said in a statement."It was important for me, after a few days, in which I have thought a lot, to personally get in touch with the DFB leadership. My disappointment is still huge. But now I want to design the rebuilding with full commitment.

"I will analyse together with my team, hold talks and draw the right conclusions at the start of the new season. It all takes time, but everything will happen in time for the start of the new international season in September."

DFB president Reinhard Grindel has insisted that Low is the best man for the job, adding: "We had a very open and trusting exchange in which we raised many points. We are all firmly convinced that with Jogi Low we have a national coach who will analyse very carefully, take the right steps and lead our team back on the road to success."It would be premature, however, to demand a comprehensive analysis just days after such a tournament."

Sweden, the only team Germany managed to beat in Russia, face Switzerland in a last 16 encounter on Tuesday, and will play either England or Colombia in the quarter-finals if they are victorious.

No offers for Juventus target Icardi as Inter hope for renewal

Inter have received no offers for captain Mauro Icardi and are keen to renew his contract, says chief executive Alessandro Antonello.

Icardi helped Inter qualify for the 2018-19 Champions League with 29 Serie A goals, a tally only matched by Ciro Immobile, but the star forward has been linked with a move away from Milan.

A possible switch to Serie A champions Juventus has been touted for the 25-year-old, who was left out of Jorge Sampaoli's Argentina squad for the World Cup in Russia.

But Antonello told Rai Gr Parlamento: "Icardi is the captain of Inter and there's a contract in place."There's a willingness on both sides to discuss a renewal, we'll meet in the next few weeks to go down that road and hope for the satisfaction of both parties."Offers? So far none have arrived."

Inter head coach Luciano Spalletti could also be set to re-sign with the Italian giants following a fourth-place finish last term.Spalletti and Inter have been busy during the off-season, signing Radja Nainggolan, Stefan de Vrij, Matteo Politano and Kwadwo Asamoah.

"There's a contract in place and in the coming weeks we will also address the theme of the renewal of the contract of the coach," Antonello added.

Southgate: England can't afford to be hindered by history or expectations

Gareth Southgate has claimed that England cannot be "hindered by history" after their penalty shoot-out victory over Colombia set up a World Cup quarter-final against Sweden.

England won their first World Cup penalty shootout in Moscow on Tuesday , Eric Dier slotting home after Jordan Pickford had made an exceptional save to deny Carlos Bacca.

It came at the culmination of a frantic, hard-fought encounter - Harry Kane's 57th-minute penalty putting England ahead before Yerry Mina restored parity in stoppage time.

And Southgate, who says he is still haunted by his penalty shootout miss against Germany at Euro 1996, believes his young England side have now reached a watershed moment.

"That will never be off my back. It is a moment that will live with me forever, sadly," Southgate said of his miss 22 years ago."But today is a special moment for this team, and that hopefully will give belief to the generations of players that follow, because they can see what is possible.

"In life you can't be hindered by history or expectations. The young players are showing that, enjoying the tournament, and we are looking forward to preparing for the quarter-final."We've talked about the team making their own history and I think they've bought into everything we've tried to do with them.

"We've got to capitalise on that now. I'm already thinking about the next game, we'd have liked a week to enjoy it but we haven't got that, because Sweden are a team I respect hugely."That's a hugely difficult game for us. At the moment we're as high as a kite, having to recover."

Pickford will likely go down as the hero for England, although the Everton man had come under fire in the build-up to the game following his failure to keep out Adnan Januzaj's winning goal for Belgium in the Three Lions' final Group G fixture.

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois went as far as to say Pickford was too small, but Southgate was full of plaudits for the 24-year-old, who had made a fantastic save to keep out Mateus Uribe's strike prior to Mina's equaliser."Yes, the save [from Uribe] was a top-class save. I'm surprised he could reach it, given his height," Southgate quipped.

"His athleticism around the goal is excellent. Again, he executed the plan in the shootout."We studied all of their penalty takers and great credit to their collective of staff and to him for taking on board that information and preparing in the right way. You don't always get what you deserve in life, but tonight we did."

'I don't want to go home yet' - Southgate dreaming of World Cup glory with England

Gareth Southgate said he was not ready to leave the World Cup after England triumphed 4-3 in a shoot-out against Colombia to move into the quarter-finals.

After a 1-1 draw in Moscow, Jordan Henderson saw his spot-kick saved by David Ospina, but England came from behind thanks to misses from Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca.

Sweden now await in the last eight of the World Cup and Southgate believes a first World Cup shoot-out win for England will give his side an important boost.

"It's something they can look back on and draw on as an experience," Southgate said to ITV.

"We've talked about creating our own stories, our own history. They've done a little bit of that tonight, we go to a quarter-final, but I don't want to go home yet!
"I thought we played so well in the 90 minutes. We've shown incredible resilience to come back from huge disappointment at the final whistle. "Huge credit to all of the players and every member of staff because so much effort has gone into winning the way we did tonight."

Southgate has plenty of penalty history of his own, having missed from the spot as England lost in the semi-finals of Euro 96 to Germany. But Jordan Pickford saved from Bacca and Eric Dier tucked home the winning kick to book the Three Lions a clash with Sweden in Samara on Saturday.

"We'd talked long and hard about owning the process. We kept calm, great credit to everyone for taking everything on board," Southgate added of the shoot-out.

"We looked at individual technique, how we needed to be as a team, and the goalkeeper has been very important in that as well, of course it's a special moment, but I'm now thinking about Sweden. This was special, but I want us to go on now.

"Sweden is another team we have a poor record against. We've underestimated them for years, they're brilliant at what they do, know exactly how they play. It's going to be a real tough test."

:shocked:Real consider £88m Juve bid for Ronaldo

    u824yGd.jpg

Sky Sports News understand Real Madrid are yet to accept or reject the proposal.Ronaldo prompted questions about his future after their 3-1 Champions League final victory over Liverpool in Kiev, promising an announcement "soon".

Juventus have made the first move to lure him away from the club he joined from Manchester United in 2009.

Sky in Italy have stated the Turin club were evaluating if it is feasible from a financial point of view.Juventus managing director Giuseppe Marotta remained tight-lipped on the possibility of signing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

He was asked by Sky in Italy if Juve fans can "start dreaming about Cristiano Ronaldo?"Marotta responded: "I won't speak (about that)."Juve midfielder Blaise Matuidi said he would welcome having Ronaldo as a team-mate when he was asked about the possibility during France's press conference on Wednesday.

"It would be incredible to have one of the best players in the world at Juventus," he said in quotes published on Marca's website."It would be great for the club and for the players."

Garcia: Neymar and Mbappe could be perfect fit for Madrid

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe would be two big signings for Real Madrid, according to former Spain international Luis Garcia, who is actually hoping against the double swoop because of how strong it would make Los Blancos.

Neymar and Mbappe have both been linked with moves to the European champions from Paris Saint-Germain, with Madrid moving to deny those reports while there are claims that Cristiano Ronaldo is nearing an exit .Garcia, who played for Barcelona and Atletico during his career, said the duo could be the perfect signings for Madrid.

"They could be [a perfect fit]. I hope not because then they will get a lot stronger," he said Wednesday."But Real Madrid is always looking for the best players. Neymar has shown how big he is in this World Cup and Mbappe has been amazing for France."They could be two big signings for Real Madrid."

The Neymar and Mbappe talk comes as Ronaldo is linked with a shock move to Serie A champions Juventus.Garcia was unwilling to be drawn on the reports, saying rumours surrounding Ronaldo were common.

"We hear a lot of rumours every single year. He could go yes, but it is very difficult to try to make a call right now," he said."Like I said, he said something in the years before, now we are hearing a lot of comments. We'll see what happens. It's difficult to call it."

While Ronaldo has already exited the World Cup in Russia, both Mbappe and Neymar face quarter-final clashes this week, with France set to take on Uruguay while Brazil will play Belgium in a start-studded last-eight tie.

Mourinho questions England and Maguire over theatrics against Colombia

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was surprised by England's antics against Colombia, criticising defender Harry Maguire for diving.England progressed from the last-16 clash at the World Cup, winning 4-3 on penalties after the 1-1 draw in Moscow Tuesday.

But there were eight yellow cards shown during a tempestuous encounter and it was the approach of Gareth Southgate's men that surprised Mourinho.

The Portuguese tactician singled out Maguire, accusing the Leicester City defender of diving to try to win a penalty."The negative thing for me was the fact… I think there is exaggeration on theatre by the players," he told Russia Today .

"I was surprised to see central defenders like Harry Maguire, normally he is a very honest guy, diving in the attacking box asking the referee for VAR. "Every team has lots of diving, lots of pretending, lots of putting pressure on the referee."The game loses quality… and for me that was the negative point."

Colombia received six of the eight yellow cards for the game, including one for Wilmar Barrios for an apparent headbutt on Jordan Henderson. The Liverpool midfielder took plenty of criticism for his reaction to the incident, with some drawing comparisons to Neymar's reaction after being stepped on by Mexico's Miguel Layun.

Ronaldo and Higuain could be 'fantastic' together at Juventus, says agent

Cristiano Ronaldo's potential arrival at Juventus would be welcomed by Gonzalo Higuain, according to the striker's agent.Reports emerged on Tuesday that Juventus had lodged a bid to Real Madrid for Ronaldo , who is heading into his 10th season with Los Blancos.

Ronaldo and Higuain played together at Madrid between 2009 and 2013, before the Argentinian moved onto Napoli, where his scintillating form earned him a switch to Turin. And although Ronaldo's hypothetical arrival at the Serie A champions could threaten Higuain's place up front, his sibling Nicolas is positive there would be no issues.

"We don't know anything yet. He was team-mates with Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, but they haven't spoken about it," Nicolas Higuain told Sky Sport Italia .
"It would be fantastic obviously, especially if he made a strike partnership with Gonzalo."They know each other so well, as they played about 80 games together. If Juve can do it, this will be fantastic, just spectacular. It's hardly new for them to work together."

Regardless of Ronaldo's situation, uncertainty remains over Higuain's future at the club , with rumours swirling that ex-Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri will look to bring the player to Chelsea should he take over at Stamford Bridge. However, Nicolas refuted suggestions that Gonzalo was looking for a way out of Juve.

"At the moment we haven’t spoken to any other clubs, as we have a three-year contract with Juventus," he added."He is very happy in the city, at the club, with the coach [Massimiliano Allegri] and the tactical system.

"Everyone knows his rapport with Sarri is wonderful and he sees him as a football father, but as far as I know, Sarri hasn't even signed for Chelsea yet. Secondly, Gonzalo is happy in Turin so I see no real chance of leaving."

Barca must pay Lenglet's release clause, says Sevilla director Caparros

Sevilla's director of football Joaquin Caparros has stated that his club will not negotiate with Barcelona over the sale of Clement Lenglet and that the Liga champions will have to pay the defender's release clause of €35 million (£31m/$41m) in order to sign him.

Goal recently revealed that the Blaugrana intend to do just that, with the player expected to make an announcement on his future in the coming days after Sevilla failed to offer extension terms on par with those tabled by Barca.

With Lenglet now due back for pre-season training, Caparros has made it clear that the club will not accept anything less than the 23-year-old's buyout clause as Barcelona edge closer to making their first signing of the summer."Let's get one thing clear, something we've always said: Sevilla will not sell Lenglet," he told Marca."We want Lenglet to stay, that's why we made him a renewal offer.

"Barcelona wanted to negotiate a transfer but we will not sell him. It's another thing if they pay the release clause, then any player can leave."For now, Lenglet is our player, he did medical tests on Tuesday with the rest of the team and, as things stand, will go to Benidorm with the rest of the players for pre-season.

"There will be no negotiating because we don't want to negotiate."While Caparros has been curt in his response to questions regarding Lenglet's future, it is understood that Sevilla have already been scouting for replacements, with Florian Lejeune of Newcastle and Gianmarco Ferrari of Sampdoria on their shortlist.

Manchester United had also been credited with an interest in the Frenchman, but have been forced to turn their attention elsewhere following Barcelona's pursuit of the defender.

Rebic to address Bayern Munich links after World Cup

Croatia and Eintracht Frankfurt star Ante Rebic has praised former boss Niko Kovac but will not discuss rumours linking him with a move to Bayern Munich until after the World Cup.Kovac was officially unveiled as Bayern head coach on Monday, having moved to the Bundesliga champions to replace Jupp Heynckes.

Since joining Bayern, Kovac has been linked with a raid on his old club, with Croatia forward Rebic reportedly at the top of the list after spending two years working together.

Rebic - who scored twice - and Kovac masterminded Frankfurt's stunning 3-1 win over Bayern in the DFB-Pokal final last season.Asked about Kovac's move and the possibility of joining him, Rebic told reporters: "I've been working with him for a number of years."He was very successful [at Eintracht]. He earned his place at Bayern. "I'm a player of Eintracht and I'm only focused on the World Cup at the moment."After the World Cup, then we can talk [about my future]."

Rebic was speaking as Croatia prepare for Saturday's World Cup quarter-final showdown against hosts Russia in Sochi.

Croatia overcame Denmark in a penalty shoot-out to reach the last eight, while Russia stunned 2010 champions Spain by the same method.Led by Zlatko Dalic, Croatia are viewed as dark horses to win the tournament as they look to surpass the achievements of the iconic 1998 team, who finished third in France 20 years ago.

"Football was different 20 years ago," Rebic said. "Now we're on a good path. We have great support. I believe in our team that we can do something similar."As for the challenge in facing Russia, he added: "We have analysed them. We have to focus on ourselves. We have more quality in our team. We will set the tone."

Everton launch €24m bid for Barcelona star Mina

Everton have offered €24 million (£21m/$28m) to Barcelona in order to sign centre-back Yerry Mina, Goal understands. The 23-year-old caught the eye at the World Cup, where he scored three times in three outings for Colombia, who made a last-16 exit at the hands of England on Tuesday.

Such has been the standard of his performances in Russia, Toffees boss Marco Silva has been convinced into make a move.

Indeed, discussions between the clubs have already started and Everton have tabled an offer to the Catalans for the defender, who has failed to hold down a regular place in their side since arriving from Palmeiras.Should Barcelona accept the offer, they are ready to cover their backs on the deal. Initially, they wished for the player to leave on a loan deal worth €2m (£1.8m/$2.3m) but they are open to selling if they can retain a buy-back option in his contract.

Barca have already done business with the Merseyside club on such a basis before, having sold them Gerard Deulofeau before taking him back to Camp Nou last summer.

Another meeting between the clubs is slated for next Monday, which could be decisive for the deal. Should Barca accept Everton’s offer, Mina could complete his move within a week.

He managed only a handful of appearances with Barca, featuring a mere six times in La Liga and the Copa del Rey combined, achieving a total of just 377 minutes and four starts across both competitions.

With the national side he was rather more successful, although he missed their opening World Cup match – a 2-1 defeat against Japan – after being left out of the starting XI. Once in the squad, he was highly useful at both ends of the field, scoring in all three matches he played and seeing his side concede only once in the 300 minutes he managed on the pitch.

Everton have yet to make a single signing this summer but have seen Ramiro Funes Mori and Wayne Rooney both depart the club on free transfers.
