Stones: Colombia the dirtiest team I've ever faced

John Stones admits Colombia are “the dirtiest team" he has ever faced, with England having had to contend with some unusual tactics in a World Cup last-16 encounter. The South Americans set out to unsettle the Three Lions from the off, giving a physical edge to a highly-charged contest.

Jordan Henderson was headbutted by Wilmar Barrios at one stage, while Raheem Sterling was barged by fitness coach Julio Urtasu as he made his way off at half-time.

Colombia then attempted to unsettle Harry Kane following the award of a second half penalty, with the spot being scuffed amid protests to referee Mark Geiger, but England refused to rise to the provocation and eventually prevailed 4-3 in a shootout.Stones, who took great pleasure in turning towards his opponents when celebrating Eric Dier’s decisive spot kick, told reporters on an odd encounter: “The game was so strange.

“Probably the dirtiest team I have ever come up against. In the respect of when we won a penalty - they were surrounding the referee, even pushing the referee. “The headbutt I'm sure you've all seen. Scuffing the penalty spot. A lot of off the ball stuff that I'm sure you have not heard about.

"All the sort of things you don't really hear in a football match. On our behalf, it showed massive character to keep a cool head and not get sucked into their game.“When you play a team that want to fight and disturb your momentum, you can sometimes get dragged into it. That's what they want.

“We stuck to our plan and kept playing our way of football.“It's a great sign for a team to have that sort of quality, to have tunnel vision of what we want out of the game plan. It was a difficult situation to be in, but one we overcame and can be proud of.”

England’s perseverance against Colombia has carried them through to a quarter-final clash with Sweden, with that contest set to be staged at the Samara Arena on Saturday.

Ronaldo signing 'like winning the lottery' for Juventus & Serie A, says Vieri

Juventus completing a deal for Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will be “like winning the lottery” for the Bianconeri and Serie A, says Christian Vieri.

A big-money move for the Portugal international has been mooted for some time, with various landing spots discussed for a five-time Ballon d’Or winner.Juve were rarely considered to be part of that conversation, but the Italian champions have surged to the front of the transfer queue.

Goal has revealed that Ronaldo has a deal waiting for him in Turin, with the 33-year-old having pushed for a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu.

With his arrival in Italy now seemingly imminent, Vieri admits his presence will offer a timely boost to the profile of a division which has faded behind continental rivals in recent years. The former Juve striker told beIN Sports on the proposed €100 million (£88m/$117,) Ronaldo deal: “For Italian football it would be like winning the lottery.

“People don't talk about Serie A much abroad, because there aren’t the superstars there were in the past. Ronaldo would revitalise it.“Even I would be more motivated to watch the league, every Sunday the world would be wondering what Juventus did and how many goals Cristiano scored.”

Ronaldo first hinted after the fifth Champions League triumph of his career back in May that he could be heading for pastures new.He has remained evasive on the subject of his future since then, but appears to have decided that the time is right for a fresh start.

Having already collected domestic and continental titles in England and Spain with Manchester United and Real Madrid, his sights are now being set on trophies in Italy. If he is to link up with Juve, then that deal is likely to set in motion a ripple through the summer window which leads to several other big-money signings.

Madrid will be leading that move into the marketplace, with the Blancos having been heavily linked with Paris Saint-Germain duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe as possible additions to their attacking ranks.

Uruguay 0 France 2: Varane and Griezmann send Les Bleus through

    4DFBB65C00000578-5925943-image-a-183_1530890758702.jpg

Raphael Varane and Antoine Griezmann scored as France advanced to a World Cup semi-final against either Belgium or Brazil after easing past Uruguay on Friday.

Following an opening passage high on energy but bereft of quality, Varane glanced home a Griezmann free-kick to open the scoring before the Atletico Madrid man doubled France's advantage just after the hour mark in a moment to forget for Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.Griezmann found space 25 yards out and fired in a shot that should have been routine for Muslera but the ball slipped through his grasp and into the net.

Oscar Tabarez's Uruguay, without injured striker Edinson Cavani, never looked like finding a route back into the game and France now await Friday's late game to see who they will meet in St Petersburg on Tuesday.

The opening 40 minutes were notable only for Uruguay's pressing and harassing of France whenever Didier Deschamps' men were in possession, and a bad miss from Les Bleus' golden boy Kylian Mbappe.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker, who scored twice in the 4-3 defeat of Argentina in the last 16, ought to have opened the scoring in Nizhny Novgorod but fluffed his lines horribly after 15 minutes.

After latching on to Olivier Giroud’s knockdown in the box, Mbappe had time and space to bring the ball down but instead attempted a header that drifted harmlessly over Muslera's crossbar. The game was crying out for some creativity and it arrived five minutes before the break. Griezmann's inswinging free-kick from the right was met by Varane and his flicked header flashed past Muslera and into the bottom left corner.

Uruguay almost responded in similar fashion four minutes later but Martin Caceres' header was brilliantly saved by Hugo Lloris low to his right and Diego Godin hammered the rebound wildly over.

France started the second half on the front foot but it was still a surprise when they made it 2-0 after 61 minutes. Muslera suggested the ball swerved but he should have got his body behind Griezmann's shot and could only watch as it dropped apologetically into the net.

Uruguay substitute Cristian Rodriguez fired a shot a yard wide after 64 minutes but the South Americans were struggling to create anything and their frustration boiled over when Mbappe went down softly under a challenge from Rodriguez, prompting angry confrontations involving Godin, Nahitan Nandez and Paul Pogba.

Corentin Tolisso could have made it 3-0 to France after 73 minutes but curled over, while Griezmann also flashed a late free-kick over the top.Uruguay centre-half Jose Gimenez was in tears with five minutes to go, such was his anguish as France cruised home.

Brazil 1 Belgium 2: Selecao out as Martinez's men advance

    4DFCD32700000578-5926657-image-a-41_1530901337906.jpg

Belgium booked a World Cup semi-final against France as Brazil's hopes of winning a sixth title were ended by a 2-1 defeat in Kazan.Brazil, ranked second in the world by FIFA, were the last remaining non-European team in the tournament after Les Bleus knocked out Uruguay in Friday's first quarter-final.

But Tite's men, who badly missed the suspended Casemiro, were soundly beaten by third-ranked Belgium thanks to a pair of goals before the break at the Kazan Arena, despite the Selecao mounting a second-half fightback.Fernandinho turned a corner into his own net to put Belgium in front, with a superb counter-attack extending their advantage.

Romelu Lukaku's skill and strength carried the Red Devils deep into Brazil territory and Kevin De Bruyne lashed home a brilliant 20-yard rocket from the striker's pass.

Brazil could find no answer until a 76th-minute headed reply from Renato Augusto, with star man Neymar virtually anonymous other than three poor attempts to win a penalty, although referee Milorad Mazic perhaps should have pointed to the spot when Vincent Kompany dived in on Gabriel Jesus.Neymar did finally come to life in injury time, forcing a brilliant save from Thibaut Courtois with a curling shot from outside the area, but it was not enough to sustain his team's challenge.

A pair of early corners were poorly defended by Belgium, Thiago Silva only able to turn his effort against the post before Paulinho mishit his shot when picked out in the box.Belgium then scored from their first corner of the game in the 13th minute.

Kompany tried to flick on Eden Hazard's left-wing delivery but the decisive touch came from his Manchester City team-mate Fernandinho, who was deputising for Casemiro and turned the ball past Alisson via his arm.

Courtois made comfortable saves from Philippe Coutinho and Willian as Brazil, playing in the quarter-finals for the seventh straight World Cup, rallied. But Belgium, now unbeaten in 24 matches, sensationally doubled their lead by breaking from a Brazil corner in the 31st minute.

De Bruyne advanced on the exposed Marcelo and arrowed a wonderful drive across Alisson from the edge of the penalty area after Lukaku collected the ball, turned and embarked on a 40-yard rampaging run with a perfect pass at the end to free the playmaker.Referee Mazic waved away Neymar's penalty appeals at the end of the first half, with the official unimpressed again as the Paris Saint-Germain star went to ground after the restart.

Tite introduced Roberto Firmino for Willian at the break and the striker got the slightest of touches on a low Marcelo centre, before Mazic again refused to point to the spot when Kompany appeared to bring down Jesus.Hazard missed a chance to wrap the tie up by firing wide from De Bruyne's pass, Courtois denying substitute Douglas Costa at the other end.

Brazil's third change yielded a goal three minutes and 14 seconds after his introduction, Augusto gliding between two static Belgium defenders to nod a flicked header past Courtois from a sublime Coutinho cross. And Augusto could have levelled moments later, instead dragging his 20-yard shot just wide as Brazil piled the pressure on Belgium in the last 10 minutes.

Coutinho's first-time shot flew wide and yet another Neymar penalty appeal was rejected, before the world's most expensive player drew a phenomenal fingertip save from Courtois in the 94th minute. But Belgium held on and the much-maligned Roberto Martinez will lead his side into a World Cup semi-final against France on Tuesday.
