Croatia 2 England 1 (aet): Mandzukic strike sets up World Cup final with France

    4E23224500000578-5943381-image-a-126_1531340998462.jpg

Mario Mandzukic's extra-time strike completed an impressive turnaround as Croatia beat England 2-1 in Moscow to reach the World Cup final for the first time in their history.

England made an electric start with Kieran Trippier's early goal and for a large period of the game looked good value to book their passage to the final for the first time since 1966, but Croatia somehow battled through their apparent jadedness to tame the Three Lions, Mandzukic landing the decisive blow.

Gareth Southgate consistently downplayed the euphoria in his team in the build-up, and for a while England gave every indication they were going to take charge of their own destiny, as Trippier found the net with a delightful free-kick in the fifth minute.

But Croatia rallied and gave England's back three more of an examination upon the start of the second period, eventually restoring parity – Ivan Perisic providing a clever finish in the 68th minute.

England managed to hang on to force an extra 30 minutes and initially looked the more threatening of the two teams once again in the first additional period. But Croatia kept their focus and Mandzukic struck in the 109th minute, ending England's dreams for another four years and setting up a final with France, as Zlatko Dalic's men move another step closer to a first World Cup title.

England's start was emphatic, as they swiftly put Croatia on the back foot through a driving Dele Alli run, which Luka Modric had to stop on the edge of the area by fouling the Tottenham star.

And from the resulting free-kick, Alli's Spurs team-mate Trippier sumptuously found the top-right corner.Croatia did their confidence little good in the 22nd minute when Danijel Subasic's poor kick went straight to Raheem Sterling, who found Harry Kane, but he ultimately shot wide after straying offside.

There was promise for England again soon afterwards, though Kane struck the post from close range and was adjudged – seemingly incorrectly – to be offside following Alli's incisive pass.Although they saw more of the ball, Dalic's side initially struggled to offer a significant improvement after half-time and England had a penalty shout turned down just after the hour – Domagoj Vida getting a slight touch on the ball before sending Sterling tumbling.

Finally things came together for Croatia at the other end soon after, as Perisic met Sime Vrsaljko's deep cross with a flying left-footed finish. And they nearly went ahead with their next attack – Perisic slamming against the right-hand post before Ante Rebic put the rebound into Jordan Pickford's hands.

A late Croatia onslaught was unable to complete the turnaround in 90 minutes and England stepped things up again in extra-time, almost retaking the lead when John Stones had a header cleared off the line by Vrsaljko in the 98th minute.Pickford was similarly heroic at the other end, denying Mandzukic at point-blank range after the striker met Perisic's cross.

But Mandzukic came out on top soon after the break, latching on to Perisic's headed pass and sending a left-footed effort across Pickford to find the bottom-right corner, securing Croatia a return to the Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday for the final.

Reaching World Cup final a 'miracle', says Croatia hero Mandzukic

Match-winner Mario Mandzukic says qualifying for the World Cup final was a "miracle" after Croatia defeated England 2-1 in Wednesday's semi-final at the Luzhniki Stadium.

Kieran Trippier and Ivan Perisic scored in regular time, before the Juventus forward lost his marker in the 109th minute to net the winner and his second goal of the tournament. The win puts Croatia into the decider against France on Sunday and Mandzukic, 32, said his country showed great courage in the come-from-behind win.

"This is a miracle. Only great teams can be as brave as we were and fight back from a goal down against teams like England. We've played our hearts out throughout the tournament," he said.

"I'm happy with my performance in all the games. I'm here for the team. I like these games. We were under pressure against Denmark and Russia but you all saw what we did today."We were like lions out there tonight and we will be the same in the final. We enjoyed the game."

Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic, meanwhile, did not believe it was any type of miracle for his side to top England, telling a press conference that his side were "in all aspects of the game", he was proud to make a bit of history for the nation.
"For Croatia as a country this is history," he said.

"I don't know whether a smaller country reaches the World Cup final. We are going to play England in the UEFA Nations League in September but we do not have a proper stadium to play that game."This is the kind of infrastructure we do not have. But we have our hearts, our pride and that is what is important to us.

"Those experts that thought that England would progress to the final are not experts! If they were experts, they'd know Croatia are a better team, and we have shown it."

Croatia can settle a 20-year-old score against France – Dalic

Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic told his team they had a chance to "settle a score" against France in the World Cup final.

Goals from Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic helped Croatia to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over England in the semi-finals on Wednesday. The result saw Croatia reach a first World Cup final, where France await in Sunday's decider in Moscow.

It was France that ended the nation's previous run at the showpiece tournament, winning their 1998 semi-final 2-1 before going on to claim the title. And Dalic said the 2018 final was an opportunity for Croatia to avenge the defeat of 20 years ago."In 1998, I was in France for the first three games as a supporter. I had to go back [to Hajduk Split] for pre-season for the last games," he said."Of course, everybody in Croatia remembers [Lilian] Thuram, the 2-1. This has been the discussion for the last 20 years.

"Maybe this game has a historic significance. The chance to settle a score. Both teams have shown their qualities and are deserved finalists."This is football, what we have to do is focus on preparing the best game in the tournament in the final."

Croatia were incredibly pushed to extra time for a third straight game, with Mandzukic scoring a 109th-minute winner.Dalic lauded his team's character after they came from behind for the third consecutive game."I insisted that I cannot teach these players football, they play fantastic football already. I am in charge of some other things. This is what they have accepted," he said.

"Initially, on their part there was not full trust and confidence but as the tournament progressed they have gained confidence. They are stronger in terms of mentality, strength.

"I said this tournament would be won by teams with character who execute on the pitch as their coach shows them. We were 1-0 down in three games in a row and we overtook all these. We have done that today in extra time."On top of all the football qualities, they have shown character. We are a nation of people who are proud, never give in and have character."

'He's given everything' - England boss Southgate defends Kane from semi-final criticism

Gareth Southgate insists he could not have asked for more from captain Harry Kane during England's World Cup campaign, dismissing criticism of the Tottenham striker's performance in Wednesday's 2-1 semi-final defeat to Croatia.

Kane looks likely to finish as the World Cup's top scorer given he already has six goals and one more match to play, but his display against Croatia was not well received. The striker struggled to make a telling impact up against Dejan Lovren and the rare opportunities he was presented with were wasted.

It was suggested to his manager that Kane was not entirely fit, but Southgate has no qualms with the effort from his captain in Russia.

"Well, I need to look back," Southgate told reporters in Moscow. "I think he's given everything for the team and there was a period of the game in the second half where we didn't have that controlled possession."The game became too end-to-end and we didn't build in the way we had been. Now is the time to be strong as a group and take the time to reflect on the performance a little bit more over the next couple of days.

"He's captained the team brilliantly throughout this tournament and I can't ask more of him as a captain or as a man over the last three weeks."In the end, Southgate feels the extra experience of Croatia's "hardened warriors" made a telling difference, and he was very complimentary of Zlatko Dalic's men.

"It's impossible to say anything that will make them feel better at this moment," Southgate added."But I don't think when people look at the experience and the last 18 months that we were expected to be in the semi-finals of a World Cup.

"Once we were here, it was an opportunity to do something that only one team in our nation's history has ever done."We're one of only three teams ever to get to a World Cup semi-final. The players and all of the staff, they have to be proud. I don't think any of them could have given any more.

"We tried to freshen things up with the substitutions, others had run out of steam. That's the age of them as well, physically they are still maturing."Croatia have some hardened warriors that are mentally strong in their decision making and in their understanding of the matches, at times that came to the fore.

"It looked at the least we would take the game beyond extra time, but great credit to them, they managed to produce the moments that won the game."To get through three extra times to get to the final tells you a lot about the team they have."

Germany manager Low must change his leadership style – Lahm

Former Germany right-back Philipp Lahm said national team manager Joachim Low must change his leadership style to avoid further international disappointment.

The 2014 World Cup champions shockingly crashed out of the 2018 tournament at the group phase, falling 2-0 to South Korea in their deciding Group F match.Questions surrounded Low's future following the elimination, but the German Football Association later announced he would be retained as national team boss.

Low guided Germany to success in 2014 with Lahm as the team's captain, but the 34-year-old believes a leadership style that worked in the past must now be adjusted.

"I am convinced that Jogi Low has to change his collegial leadership style of recent years if he wants to succeed again with the new generation of internationals," Lahm wrote on LinkedIn."This is not a sign of weakness, but of further development. He must show individuals that they are responsible for the entire team."In Russia, Low relied on much the same style and same players that brought so much success in 2014. Lahm says these decisions proved to be mistakes.

"The coaching team relied on the fact that the successful leadership culture of the past is enough to be successful once again," Lahm said."[Low] must establish a culture of tighter, clearer decisions than he was previously accustomed to."

A pre-tournament photo session with Mesut Ozil, Ilkay Gundogan and controversial Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan caused a stir both inside and outside the Germany team. Lahm said this situation was not properly handled.

"This clear address was needed, for example, at the time of the affair surrounding Mesut Ozil and İlkay Gundogan sharing a photo with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan," Lahm continued.

"Ozil (and initially also Gundogan) felt no need to speak out and explain themselves in public. This necessity should have been communicated quickly and clearly in order to improve the harmony portrayed to the outside - and to the inside."With Low's future secure for now, Lahm feels the manager can achieve future success by making a few adjustments. "If he succeeds, I am very optimistic about the future of our team," Lahm said.

Ronaldo's winning mentality perfect for Juventus - Cancelo

Joao Cancelo has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo's "winning mentality" after the Portuguese superstar's sensational switch to Juventus.

Ronaldo completed his €100million move to the Serie A champions earlier this week, bringing an end to his successful nine-season stay in Madrid. He leaves as Los Blancos' all-time top scorer and a four-time Champions League winner with the team he joined from Manchester United in 2009

Cancelo - who will line up alongside his international team-mate for the Old Lady after joining from Valencia last month - believes the 33-year-old will fit perfectly into Juve's well-oiled winning machine.Speaking at his official unveiling on Thursday, Cancelo said: "It's an enormous pleasure for me and all footballers to play with a great champion like Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I'm sure he's going to raise the overall quality of the team and he'll help us to keep winning.
"He has a winning mentality and has won a lot in his career. At the same time, Juventus have claimed seven straight Scudetto titles, so I hope they will make a perfect match."

Argentina's Nestor Pitana to referee World Cup final

FIFA have named Argentinian Nestor Pitana as the referee for Sunday's World Cup final between France and Croatia.

The 43-year-old officiated the tournament's opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia and was in charge for France's quarter-final victory over Uruguay, as well as Croatia's last-16 clash with Denmark. He is joined by assistant referees Hernan Maidana and Juan Belatti, as well as fourth official Bjorn Kuipers.

France booked their spot in the final in Moscow with a slender win over Belgium, while Croatia edged past England to seal their place in a World Cup final for the first time in their history.Curiously, an Argentine was also in charge of officiating duties the last time that France made the World Cup final.

In 2006, Horacio Elizondo was chosen alongside compatriots Dario Garcia and Rodolfo Otero to oversee Les Bleus' clash with Italy.

Elizondo became an infamous figure in France due to his decision to send off captain Zinedine Zidane in his final international match for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi.
Without their star, France fell to a penalty shoot-out defeat, handing Marcello Lippi's Azzurri their fourth World Cup title.

Barcelona sign €36m Lenglet from Sevilla

    4E2B844E00000578-5947323-image-a-3_1531420751798.jpg

Barcelona have signed defender Clement Lenglet from Sevilla. The Frenchman has signed a five-year contract at Camp Nou, with Barca having paid his €35.9 million (£31.7m/$41.9m) release clause.Lenglet's deal includes a release clause, which stands at €300m (£264m/$350m), and runs until June 30, 2023.

It brings to an end a saga that has stretched several months, with the Catalan side having long been linked with the Frenchman.

As long ago as November, rumours started to spread that he could move to Camp Nou, while speculation built again in the spring amid Sevilla's insistence that they were trying to tie one of their star men down to a new long-term deal that could have made him the best-paid player at the club.

The Rojiblancos were ultimately forced to back down as the centre-back failed to find an agreement over a new contract, though they were adamant that Barca would pay his release clause.

Lenglet became one of Europe's most sought-after defenders at Sevilla, following his arrival from Ligue 1 side Nancy in January 2017.Manchester United were also credited with an interest in securing his signature, but Lenglet has opted to stay in La Liga with Barca.

The 23-year-old joins a growing French contingent at Camp Nou, including forward Ousmane Dembele, and defenders Lucas Digne and Samuel Umtiti.Lenglet enjoyed a productive spell at Sevilla, making over 70 appearances and scoring four goals for the club.

He is yet to be capped by France at senior level but has won 10 caps at Under-21 level. He has, additionally, been capped at every level between U16 and U21.Lenglet becomes Barcelona's second major signing of the summer, after Arthur arrived from Gremio for €40m on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Catalans are seeking to offload several players following the arrival of Arthur as they need to free up spots for non-EU players.Brazil international Paulinho has already been allowed to depart, while it has been suggested that Yerry Mina could also leave, despite having enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign with Colombia.

Everton continue to be linked with a move for the South American centre-back, with a fee of €24 million (£21m/$28m) suggested.
