Sarri confirmed as new Chelsea manager

    skysports-maurizio-sarri-chelsea_4361607.jpg

Chelsea have confirmed Maurizio Sarri as their new head coach. The Italian has signed a three-year deal with the Stamford Bridge side and will replace Antonio Conte, who was sacked on Friday.

Goal confirmed in May that he was closing in on a move to the Premier League side, with the delay due to a disagreement over the compensation that the Blues needed to pay Napoli to release him from his deal with the Serie A outfit.

Chelsea are already a week into their pre-season training, but the 59-year-old is eager to get started in his new post.

"I look forward to starting work and meeting the players on Monday ahead of travelling to Australia, where I will be able to get to know the squad and begin our match action," he told the club's official website."I hope we can provide some entertaining football for our fans, and that we will be competing for trophies at the end of the season, which is what this club deserves."

The Blues, meanwhile, are hopeful that he can employ an expansive brand of football to thrill supporters.Director Marina Granovskaia stated: "We are delighted to welcome Maurizio and are looking forward to him bringing his football philosophy to Chelsea.

"Maurizio’s Napoli side played some of the most exciting football in Europe, impressing with their attacking approach and dynamism, and his coaching methods significantly improved the players at his disposal."He has plenty of experience in Serie A and the Champions League and we know he is relishing the chance to work in the Premier League."

Jorginho is expected to follow the manager from the Serie A club, with Chelsea set to beat out Manchester City to the midfielder's signing. It is expected that he will cost £50 million ($66m).

Meanwhile, the Blues' saga with Conte may only just be beginning as the manager is poised to take legal action against the club in order to secure £9m in compensation for himself and his staff after he was dumped.Chelsea missed out on the Champions League last season last season, having finished fifth in the league, and as such face a battle to keep key figures, with Eden Hazard linked as a potential replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid.

With little over three weeks left in the transfer window and four until the first Premier League match of the 2018-19, Sarri cannot count on time as an ally.

Agent hints at English interest in Brozovic: They could pay his €50m release clause!

Marcelo Brozovic is open to leaving Inter for the Premier League this summer, his agent says, but any potential suitors would have to activate his release clause. The Croatia midfielder joined Inter from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2015 in an initial loan deal from Dinamo Zagreb and has another three years left on his contract.

After over 100 appearances for the Serie A side, the 25-year-old has been linked to teams like Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and AC Milan over the summer.

Although his agent believes the versatile midfielder, who has been a key player for Croatia in their World Cup campaign, is happy at San Siro, he pointed out that an offer of €50 million (£44m/$58m) would force Inter to sell and could convince him to go.

"Marcelo feels good at Inter, he is happy and he could sign new, better deal soon," Miroslav Bicanic told Sportske novosti."But it is always possible that some English or other club pays the €50m buy-out clause.

"No rush, he is happy in Inter, we are both going on holiday after the World Cup and if someone wants us, they can always find us."Brozovic came close to leaving Inter for Serie A champions Juventus last summer, but the clubs failed to reach an agreement.

Bicanic suggested last month that the ex-Lokomotiv Zagreb man could end up on the move amid growing interest, saying: "I can confirm that several great clubs follow Marcelo and they are informed, but I cannot name them".

    Jorginho completes £57m Chelsea move

    skysports-jorginho-maurizio_4361699.jpg

Chelsea have completed a deal to take Napoli's Jorginho to Stamford Bridge, the club have announced.Earlier on Saturday, the Blues confirmed that they had appointed Maurizio Sarri as their new manager for the next three years following the sacking of Antonio Conte on Friday.

Goal understands Chelsea will pay £57m (€65m/$86m) for the player, with Jorginho having signed a five-year contract with the club, where he will earn £102k per week.He played 33 times for Napoli in Serie A last season, scoring two goals and creating four more from his deep-lying position in the midfield as they finished second behind Juventus in the standings.

Speaking to the club's official website, Jorginho said: "I am absolutely ecstatic to be here at Chelsea. It is not easy to become part of such a big team so I am very, very happy."I am excited to play in such an intense league, for a team that gives everything to play and win."

The Italy international was an important member of Napoli's squad under Sarri and the Blues expect him to have a similar influence in London."We are delighted Jorginho has chosen to join Chelsea," club director Marina Granovskaia said. "He was one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe and will become an important member of the playing squad.

"He has demonstrated his quality working under Maurizio Sarri and we are convinced his signing will help bring further success to Stamford Bridge."
City were previously interested in the 26-year-old Italy international but it is Sarri's side who have won the race to sign the player.Indeed, it had been expected that the midfielder would join up with the Premier League champions, who also had a five-year deal on the table less than a fortnight ago.

His agent had previously told TuttoMercatoWeb: "Jorginho is good at Napoli, but there are negotiations with Manchester City and this is why we do not talk about a renewal."We are talking about a lad for whom Manchester City represents the opportunity of a lifetime."

Jorginho has been handed the No.5 shirt for his first season with the Blues, who missed out on Champions League football after finishing fifth in the Premier League last term.

Dalic focused on World Cup final amid Premier League talk

Zlatko Dalic was coy when asked if he wanted to move to the Premier League as the Croatia head coach maintained his focus on the looming World Cup final.

Dalic has fast become a household name after guiding Croatia to their first World Cup decider, with France standing in the way of the Balkan nation and a remarkable title in Moscow on Sunday. The 51-year-old replaced Ante Cacic as Croatia struggled during qualifying, though Dalic oversaw a successful play-off against Greece to reach Russia 2018.

Dalic – who worked his way up the ranks in Asia where he led UAE giants Al Ain to the 2016 AFC Champions League final – now stands on the cusp of Croatia's biggest achievement.

Quizzed on his future plans and a possible switch to England, Dalic told reporters: "I can't really think about that now because it may give the wrong message to some Croatian people when we are about to try to become the best team in the world."But maybe. Now we have to try to do something big.""In the big European leagues you look for brand names and it's all wrong," Dalic added. "People get big jobs just because they were big players. But what does that mean?

"I started at a small club. I told them straight away that a big name equals a big mistake that will cost big money."Nothing was given to me on a plate unlike some managers in Europe who can manage because of their name."But I always said: 'Give me a Barcelona or a Madrid and I will win titles'."

Dalic continued: "Throughout my career and my life I've always taken the hardest path and had to fight. I didn't want to stay in Croatia, be a middling coach and live off handouts. So I went abroad.

"We are not respected in Europe, even though Croatian coaches like Slaven Bilic and Niko Kovac [Bayern Munich head coach] have great results. I started at the bottom of the ladders and in a year I was the best coach in Asia."I managed the best club in Asia. I reached the final of the Champions League in Asia. You cannot sneeze at that. That brought me huge experience. I was there seven years and it was a hard path but I believed in myself.

"When Croatia called I never had any doubts or dilemmas. I knew what we could do on the basis of my faith in myself and players. People like me, Kovac and Bilic. This is the proof that we know what we are about. But we've been underrated as coaches. Now we have all shown we can achieve things and we are proud."

Belgium 2 England 0: Meunier, Hazard make history for Martinez's entertainers

    4E3BE41200000578-5953819-image-a-60_1531577230933.jpg

Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard combined to secure Belgium's best performance at a World Cup as they edged England 2-0 in the third-place play-off in St Petersburg on Saturday.

Having fallen one match shy of a maiden final appearance in Tuesday's slim 1-0 defeat to France, the Red Devils' vaunted golden generation lifted themselves off the canvass to improve upon the fourth-place finish managed by Enzo Scifo, Jan Ceulemans and company in 1986.

Meunier was the unlikely hero early on as his close-range finish in the opening exchanges denied England what would have been their best tournament result since lifting the trophy 52 years ago.

Belgium's electrifying start mirrored that which Gareth Southgate's men had made in their semi-final loss to Croatia, when a Kieran Trippier free-kick in the fifth minute looked likely to book them a second berth on the big stage.

But they eventually fell in extra time then and again conceded late in a less pressurised environment this time around, Hazard wrapping up victory - and Belgium's second tournament win over England - with his third of the campaign in the 82nd minute.

Harry Kane's struggles in the knockout rounds continued but, with Romelu Lukaku unable to add to the four he netted in Group G, should take home England's only silverware as the likely Golden Boot winner, with Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann three goals behind Kane's tally of six.

Suspended for the loss to France, Meunier's return as one of two changes allowed Martinez to revert to his preferred three-man defensive shape. The Paris Saint-Germain wing-back needed just four minutes to illustrate his value, racing into the box to get across Danny Rose and tuck home Nacer Chadli's classy low cross in from the left.

The tournament's top scorers were fluid going forward and might have been further ahead had Jordan Pickford not clawed away a deflected Kevin De Bruyne finish.Kane should have brought England level 10 minutes later but, from an intelligent Raheem Sterling lay-off, scuffed wide of the left post.

Tottenham team-mate Toby Alderweireld was similarly wasteful when he hooked over the bar shortly after the half-hour, although Belgium's only real setback by half-time was the loss of Chadli to an apparent hamstring injury.

Southgate responded to the deficit by introducing Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard in place of Sterling and Danny Rose at the interval. Manchester United midfielder Lingard almost made the desired impact when his drive across goal narrowly evaded captain Kane.

At the other end, Lukaku's heavy touch on the end of a clever De Bruyne pass scuppered the striker's final chance to close in on his opposite number's tally, Dries Mertens replacing him on the hour.

With a sluggish Kane continuing to misfire, it was left to Eric Dier to go closest to equalising 20 minutes from time. The midfielder burst through for a one-on-one and delicately dinked over Courtois, only to see a retreating Alderweireld desperately hack the ball off the line.Everton keeper Pickford, a contender for the team of the tournament, kept his country in the game with a sublime one-handed save from Meunier in the 80th minute.

But it mattered little in the end, Hazard making no mistake with his near-post finish having been sent clean through by De Bruyne, the star pair combining to put a fitting seal on Belgium's impressive showing in Russia.

Lloris vows no repeat of Euro 2016 final complacency

Hugo Lloris says there will be no repeat of any complacency shown by France at Euro 2016 when they face Croatia in the World Cup final on Sunday.

Paul Pogba suggested Les Bleus almost took beating Portugal in the final on home soil for granted after seeing off world champions Germany in the last four, only for Eder to snatch a surprise 1-0 win for Fernando Santos' side.

But Lloris has vowed there will be no such arrogance in the showdown with Zlatko Dalic's Croatia in Moscow, even though he does not think all the players truly expected to beat Portugal.

"No, I don't think it'll happen again," he told a news conference at Luzhniki Stadium. "The Euros was new for many players. In the Velodrome against the world champions, we had this communion with the public but beyond that I don't think we saw it in such a way [that we were destined to win the final].

"Even though we had followed the euphoria [at home], we didn't do that after Belgium [in the semi-final]. We know what we've gone through and we want to give the best opportunity to the team to win this final. That's the aim and that's the mentality we've been using while preparing for this game."

France saw off Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium in 90 minutes to reach the final in Russia, while Croatia had to come from a goal down and survive extra time in all three of their matches in the knockout rounds. However, far from seeing Croatia's extra workload as benefiting France, Lloris thinks it will only have strengthened their opponents' desire to win.

"Croatia have shown their moral values, which are quite incredible," he said. "They've shown that throughout the tournament, they've gone through after extra time three times in a row, which shows there is something special in the team.

"The players have great individual talent, but they have incredible collective strength. We have a lot of respect for the team and we're going to have to play a perfect match to win."The Tottenham goalkeeper does not think nerves will pose a problem for his own team, though, as they aim to win the World Cup for a second time.

"I think our team is quite calm," he added. "Since the beginning of the tournament, I don't know if we realise how far we've come, but it's better that way.

"The words from the coach and president are important as well, the management team have given us the best possible conditions, but we have this inner strength that's been inside us since the beginning, to face any challenge.

"It will be the most important match of our careers, we'll be ready physically and mentally. It'll be a special match, it's a World Cup final, we have to stay in our bubble and focus on the ultimate goal."

Aubameyang shines as Emery's Arsenal reign starts with 8-0 win

    4E3C3B5A00000578-0-image-a-69_1531584532528.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a 10-minute hat-trick as Unai Emery started his Arsenal reign with an 8-0 friendly win over National League side Boreham Wood.

Emery was appointed Gunners manager in May after Arsene Wenger's 22-year spell in charge came to an end and the Spaniard could not have wished for a more comfortable first game in charge. It was Wenger's last signing as Arsenal boss who was the star turn during a goal-laden first half on Saturday.

Aubameyang, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund during the January transfer window, plundered 10 goals in 13 Premier League games towards the end of 2017-18 campaign and wasted little time picking up where he left off.His first came after seven minutes, whipping a shot into the top corner from outside the area, and he headed in a second at the back post just two minutes later.

He completed his hat-trick in the 17th minute, lashing home from the penalty spot after Reiss Nelson had been hauled down in the area. Nelson then added a fourth with a fine volley 10 minutes before the break.

Aubameyang turned provider for strike partner Alexandre Lacazette in the 40th minute, the Frenchman coolly slotting past goalkeeper Craig Ross after a swift counter-attack.

Emery changed all 11 players at the break, but it did little to disrupt the flow as Eddie Nketiah clipped home from close range eight minutes after the restart.
Jeff Reine-Adelaide and Henrikh Mkhitaryan then added two more in the closing stages as Arsenal started the Emery era with a resounding victory.

France star Kylian Mbappe can win the Ballon d’Or – Drogba

France and PSG forward Kylian Mbappe can contend for the Ballon d’Or if he maintains his fine form, says two-time African Footballer of the Year Didier Drogba. The 19-year-old is one of the top performers at the 2018 Fifa World Cup with three goals in six appearances which has helped his country to the final of the event.

The youngster scored twice to dump Lionel Messi's Argentina out of the global tournament in the round of 16; a feat that made him the first teenager to net a brace in a World Cup since Pele in 1958.

While noting his performance that helped PSG win a domestic treble [Ligue 1, Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue] last season and his display at the tournament, Drogba who met Mbappe at the Elysee Palace in a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron and President George Weah in February, believes the pacy forward can win the prestigious individual honour ahead in the future.

"He's a kid that I know. I've seen him play the last few years and I know the people who helped him to be the player he is now," Drogba was quoted as saying by SkySports.

"I'm very happy for him. And if he continues like this, why not? Why not win the Ballon d'Or? I had the chance to meet him and we had an important meeting with a lot of influential people in France, with the president Mr Macron."We were exchanging ideas and when he started speaking I can tell you that the kid is 19-years-old but he's not a kid. He's very mature and he's very composed when he's talking."

France face a daunting task to stop Croatia when they lock horns for the most coveted trophy at the Luzhniki Stadium on Sunday.

'You know my preferred destination' - Hazard drops Real Madrid hint and discusses Chelsea exit

Eden Hazard cast fresh doubt over his Chelsea future as the Belgium star appeared to confirm his interest in a move to Real Madrid.

New Blues boss Maurizio Sarri faces a battle to keep the forward, who believes his World Cup performances warrant him the Golden Ball and the right to choose his next destination. The 27-year-old signed off from a successful campaign in Russia with his third goal of the tournament as Belgium beat England 2-0 in the third-place play-off in St Petersburg on Saturday .

Asked about his future at club level after the game, Hazard told reporters they already know his preferred destination amid reports he could be a potential replacement for the departed Cristiano Ronaldo in Madrid."After six wonderful years at Chelsea it might be time to discover something different," Hazard said.

"Certainly, after this World Cup, I can decide if I want to stay or go, but Chelsea will have the final decision. "You know my preferred destination."

Afforded a free role in behind Romelu Lukaku, Hazard was one of the most influential players at the World Cup.After helping the Red Devils surpass their previous best of fourth, he feels his performances should earn him the title of the tournament's best player.

"Deserving it… well, it would be showing off to say I deserve it but yes, I do think I deserve it with my performances in the matches," he said about his chances of securing the Golden Ball.

"But there are other players in the World Cup, some who will play the final tomorrow, so it is not really important for me."If I get it I will be very happy and if I don’t get it I will be happy with the World Cup we have played."
