:('It is going to be difficult!' - Van der Sar doubts whether Man Utd can catch rivals Man City

Manchester United are already facing an “uphill battle”, says Edwin van der Sar, with the 2018-19 campaign shaping up to be a “difficult year”.

The Red Devils were expected to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title in what is Jose Mourinho’s third season at the helm. They have, however, stumbled out of the blocks to make their worst start in 26 years, with back-to-back defeats suffered against Brighton and Tottenham.

A positive result away at Burnley on Sunday is now a must, with pressure building on Mourinho despite his claims to still being “one of the greatest managers in the world”.

Former goalkeeper Van der Sar fears there may be more testing times to come for those at Old Trafford, telling reporters at the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco: "Last year, there was a very big gap [to Manchester City] and this year they've started badly, losing two of their first three games."It will be an uphill battle. You have so many strong teams in the Premier League.
"It is going to be difficult this year."

Van der Sar rarely endured such struggles during his time with United, winning four Premier League titles, the League Cup, Champions League and Club World Cup during a glittering six-year spell.

Another former favourite who enjoyed a trophy-laden stint at Old Trafford during the club’s heyday is David Beckham, with the ex-England captain among those to have been honoured by UEFA in midweek.

Van der Sar never got the chance to play alongside an iconic No. 7 from United’s past, but still holds a modern day legend in the highest regard. He said of Beckham, who was awarded the UEFA President’s Award: "I know him well, I never played with him but I've met him on several occasions.

"He is a nice guy - his work on the pitch, everybody knows that, but he also does a lot of good things for charity."We played a couple of years ago in a charity match at Manchester for his foundation.

“He is a genuine nice guy and it is a really great achievement for him."

AC Milan 2 Roma 1: Cutrone late show thrills San Siro

    4F941C6A00000578-6120011-image-a-20_1535747710724.jpg

Patrick Cutrone gave AC Milan lift-off in Serie A this season as the substitute snatched a 2-1 victory over Roma deep into stoppage time at San Siro on Friday.

Stand-out recruits Gonzalo Higuain and Steven N'Zonzi each had goals ruled out via VAR reviews for their respective sides after visiting defender Federico Fazio cancelled out Franck Kessie's 40th-minute opener.

It was a frustrating night in front of goal for Higuain but the ex-Juventus man turned provider in the 95th minute, threading a fine pass for Cutrone to slot home.

Gennaro Gattuso led raucous celebrations as his team bounced back from last weekend's chastening 3-2 loss at Napoli, while Eusebio Di Francesco's Roma are now winless since the opening weekend.

Milan right-back Davide Calabria fizzed just over Robin Olsen's crossbar before Roma's Sweden international goalkeeper was called upon to thwart Higuain and Suso.

The breakthrough arrived when Ricardo Rodriguez proved too nimble for Fazio and Kessie caught the left-hand side of Roma's defence napping – stealing in for a close-range finish.Higuain sloppily lost possession for his opposite number in Roma's attack, Edin Dzeko, to curl wide in the 49th minute.

The pressure was building on Milan and Fazio atoned for his part in the opener with a fine volleyed finish when the ball was worked back into the box after Gianluigi Donnarumma punched poorly from a corner.

The Rossoneri thought they had an instant response but replays showed Higuain was fractionally offside when he scampered in between Fazio and Kostas Manolas to finish coolly.

N'Zonzi was the next man to fall foul of technology, although the shaky set-piece defending on display from the hosts made Roma appear the most likely winners. Cutrone had other ideas.

Choupo-Moting reunites with Tuchel at PSG

Paris Saint-Germain have completed the surprise signing of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting from Stoke City ahead of the transfer deadline in France.

Choupo-Moting scored five Premier League goals in his sole season with Stoke as they were relegated from the Premier League, but Ligue 1 champions PSG have swooped to secure the 29-year-old on a two-year contract.

Coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed the imminent arrival of the Cameroon international earlier on Friday and, after signing Juan Bernat from Bayern Munich, Choupo-Moting maked an unlikely conclusion to PSG's business in this window.

He links up again with Tuchel, who oversaw the best spell of his career at Mainz, the forward having spent three seasons with the Bundesliga club before joining Schalke and then Stoke."I am extremely honoured to be signing for this big European club, Paris Saint-Germain," Choupo-Moting told PSG's official website.

"I would like to thank the directors and the coach for the confidence they have shown in signing me. I will give my absolute maximum out on the pitch, every day, to show my dedication to my new club."Coming to France, a big football country, is a fantastic moment in my career. I will be playing with some extraordinary teammates and I can't wait to experience the atmosphere at the Parc des Princes!"

The Hamburg-born attacker scored 10 goals in a pair of Bundesliga seasons under Tuchel at Mainz, before moving on to Schalke, where he would 18 times in the league over the next three seasons.

The Choupo-Moting then moved to Stoke on free, where he played in 29 Premier League games, netting five times.A former Germany youth international, Choupo-Moting chose to represent Cameroon at the senior level and has received 45 caps from the African nation.

Celta Vigo 2 Atletico Madrid 0: Gomez stuns Simeone's men

Ten-man Atletico Madrid were handed a humbling first defeat of the new LaLiga season in a dismal display at Celta Vigo, going down 2-0 at the Balaidos.Maxi Gomez netted the opener in the 46th minute and then created the second for Iago Aspas in the 52nd as Atleti failed to recover from a poor first half in which they lacked cutting edge up front.

Antoine Griezmann sought to inspire his side, but a fightback never looked likely for Diego Simeone's men, who were tipped to put up a decent fight for the title.Indeed, things went from bad to worse for Atleti as Stefan Savic saw red with 20 minutes remaining, although Gustavo Cabral was harshly denied a third by a marginal offside call after a VAR consultation.

After an open yet uneventful first 25 minutes in which the two sides took turns to counter, Griezmann was inches from firing Atleti in front as a 20-yard drive crept wide.

There was little incident of note in the remainder of a sweltering first half, but Celta took just 42 seconds to break the deadlock following the restart.Gomez pounced on Diego Godin's slip to hammer low into the net and Atleti were quickly stunned by a second blow, the first goalscorer turning creator with a lovely delivery onto Aspas' head.

Savic was then dismissed for a second yellow card as he handled the ball to concede a free-kick from which Cabral thought he had added a third, before a lengthy VAR delay saw the defender judged offside.

Manchester City 2 Newcastle United 1: Walker blasts through Benitez's wall

    4F9BE99200000578-6122045-image-a-38_1535824589594.jpg

Kyle Walker's scored his first Manchester City goal in sensational fashion to hand the Premier League champions a hard-fought 2-1 win over Newcastle United.Raheem Sterling's clinically taken opener in the eighth minute suggested a romp in line with City's 6-1 thumping of Huddersfield Town in their previous home game.

But Pep Guardiola's side switched off defensively and DeAndre Yedlin was rewarded for a lung-bursting run when Salomon Rondon picked him out to level with half an hour played.

It fell to England right-back Walker, who failed to find the net as City racked up points and goals records last season, to step forward with a long-range stunner and ensure the 10th anniversary of Sheikh Mansour's takeover was celebrated with a victory.Newcastle undermined their bid to stifle City during the opening stages by carelessly coughing up possession in dangerous areas.

Riyad Mahrez was unable to punish Rondon's slackness but, when returning Magpies captain Jamaal Lascelles passed straight to Benjamin Mendy, the full-back found Sterling to cut inside for an emphatic finish.

Gabriel Jesus passed up two clear chances to increase City's advantage and there was an air of complacency when their disorganised backline allowed Rondon to slide a fine cross into the path of the rampaging Yedlin to equalise. The game resumed its pattern early in the second half until a darting dribble from Sterling created the opening for Walker to crash home his rasping 30 yarder eight minutes before the hour.

Both goalkeepers excelled in the 65th minute as City's Ederson picked out substitute Bernardo Silva with a clever underarm throw.Bernardo Silva sent a delightful pass to Sergio Aguero and his cross saw Martin Dubravka make a remarkable point-blank saves from Fernandinho before twice denying David Silva on the rebound.

Dubravka impressed again in stoppage time, driving Aguero wide to deny City's all-time top score his 15th Premier League goal against Newcastle.

Stuttgart 0 Bayern Munich 3: Goretzka gets off the mark as Kovac's winning start continues

    wire-4145154-1535826858-361_634x478.jpg

Leon Goretzka opened his Bayern Munich account to set the Bundesliga champions on their way to a convincing 3-0 victory over Stuttgart.

Bayern were frustrated for much of the first half at Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday, but former Schalke prodigy Goretzka made the breakthrough shortly before the interval, curling home at the culmination of a fine team move.

Goretzka's goal punctured Stuttgart's spirit, and although the woodwork denied David Alaba, Robert Lewandowski thumped home in the 62nd minute to double the advantage.

Bayern were not finished there, though, Thomas Muller getting in on the act late on to cap off the win in style.

Stuttgart had looked comfortable early on despite a typically dominant start from Bayern - Ron-Robert Zieler only called into action once in the opening stages as he kept out Joshua Kimmich's 16th-minute volley at the near post. But Stuttgart's resolve was broken in the 37th minute, Goretzka finding enough space on the edge of Stuttgart's area to curl in a sublime finish.

Bayern clicked up a gear, and only an instinctive stop from Zieler prevented Mats Hummels extending their lead prior to break, before Alaba rattled the upright with a wicked free-kick following the restart.Any lingering Stuttgart hopes were ended just after the hour - Goretzka turning provider with a neat pass into Lewandowski, who unleashed a rasping strike into the bottom-right corner.

And Bayern added further gloss to the victory with 14 minutes remaining, Lewandowski and Muller combining superbly for the latter to tuck home.

Bologna 0 Inter 3: Dream debut for Nainggolan

    wire-4145186-1535826902-32_634x422.jpg

Radja Nainggolan scored on his Inter debut as Luciano Spalletti's men won 3-0 at Bologna to record their first Serie A victory of the new season.

After a slow start to 2018-19, Inter looked like being frustrated again on Saturday until Nainggolan produced a moment of quality in the 66th minute, netting with his side's first shot on target.A muscular injury meant the former Roma midfielder's bow was delayed after his €38million move, but it proved worth the wait for fans of the Nerazzurri.

Substitute Antonio Candreva and Ivan Perisic both struck inside the final eight minutes to wrap up a triumph that, while impressive, was not quite as comfortable as the scoreline suggests.

Having collected only one point from their first two games, the win comes as a timely boost to Spalletti, especially given it arrived without injured captain Mauro Icardi, who watched on from the stands.

A quiet first half only produced two significant chances, with Perisic unable to find the target at the far post after a second-minute Matteo Politano cross completely caught out home goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski.

In denying Filip Helander at point-blank range at the other end, Samir Handanovic distinguished himself far better. The Sweden defender appeared poised to apply the finishing touch when Danilo headed Erick Pulgar's cross into his path, only for the Inter keeper's reflexes to come to the rescue.

The game looked to be heading towards a goalless draw until Inter gradually upped the tempo after the break, a neat passing move seeing Politano find Nainggolan, who took one touch and buried a low strike into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

Federico Santander almost equalised for Bologna when he diverted his header inches wide from Federico Mattiello's threatening delivery, before Inter put the result beyond doubt.

Keita Balde Diao - who was standing in for Icardi in attack - blazed over a glorious late chance after Danilo D'Ambrosio laid it on a plate for him, but Candreva made no mistake when he slotted in Perisic's delivery from six yards out.
And just 79 seconds later it was three, Perisic cutting inside Mattiello with a great dummy before lifting a fine finish over Skorupski.

Nimes 2 Paris Saint-Germain 4: Mbappe sent off after late strike for champions

    wire-4144910-1535824211-101_634x476.jpg

Kylian Mbappe scored a vital goal before getting sent-off as Paris Saint-Germain maintained their 100 per cent record in Ligue 1 with a 4-2 victory over 10-man Nimes.

Having forged ahead through goals from Neymar and Angel Di Maria towards the end of the opening half, Thomas Tuchel's men were picked apart by a feisty Nimes side who refused to lie down.

Antonin Bobichon put the hosts back in the contest with a sweetly struck shot before a VAR-awarded penalty, converted by Teji Savanier, had them on course for an unlikely point. But Mbappe struck his fourth goal in three appearances this season 13 minutes from time before Edinson Cavani found the net in stoppage time to finally finish off Nimes.

That was not the end of the drama, though, with Mbappe dismissed for his reaction to a heavy tackle from Savanier, who was also shown a red card in the closing seconds of an eventful contest.

Thomas Meunier created the breakthrough on 36 minutes, playing a one-two with Mbappe before crossing for Neymar to slide in and poke the ball past Paul Bernardoni, who was caught out four minutes later when Angel Di Maria scored directly from a corner on PSG’s right, curling the ball in at an unguarded near post as the goalkeeper back-pedalled helplessly.

Yet Nimes were rewarded for an improved second-half display when Sada Thioub squared to Bobichon, allowing the substitute to curl a first-time shot beyond Alphonse Areola.Thiago Silva's clumsy challenge on Theo Valls gifted Nimes a 70th-minute penalty that was eventually awarded after the use of technology, Savanier depositing the spot-kick into the bottom left corner.

Just as an unlikely turnaround appeared to be on the cards, Mbappe latched onto a long ball over the top from Presnel Kimpembe, took one touch to perfectly control the ball and then lashed his attempt beyond Bernardoni.

Cavani capitalised on a Julian Draxler pass to nonchalantly roll the ball in for PSG’s fourth before Mbappe was given his marching orders for pushing Savanier to the floor after the midfielder had scythed him down.

Chelsea 2 Bournemouth 0: Pedro, Hazard keep up winning start

    4F99BE5600000578-6121711-Pedro_celebrates_scoring_for_Chelsea_on_72_minutes_as_they_final-a-1_1535822165711.jpg

Chelsea continued their 100 per cent record in the Premier League under Maurizio Sarri with a 2-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday.

Second-half strikes from substitute Pedro and Eden Hazard settled a tight contest at Stamford Bridge and made it four victories from four games in 2018-19.Bournemouth had defended stoutly throughout and could easily have scored themselves before Pedro's shot deflected into the net 18 minutes from time.

Chelsea assumed early control with close to 85 per cent of the possession in the first 20 minutes, but a half-chance for Alvaro Morata that was blocked by Asmir Begovic was the best they could muster.

Bournemouth should have gone ahead half an hour in when Callum Wilson sent the ball over the bar after being picked out in space by debutant Diego Rico, but they rode their luck on the stroke of half-time when Marcos Alonso's mishit effort with his right foot struck the base of the left-hand post.

Former Chelsea man Nathan Ake spurned a glorious chance to break the deadlock early in the second half, failing to connect properly with the ball from barely a yard out, as Bournemouth continued to frustrate the Blues.

It proved to be a costly miss, though. After linking up with fellow substitute Olivier Giroud, Pedro turned past Ake and fired the ball beyond Begovic from the edge of the area, with the deflection off Steve Cook taking it beyond the goalkeeper's reach.

Hazard combined with Alonso to drill home a second five minutes from time and lift Chelsea level with Liverpool on 12 points from a possible 12, while Bournemouth are sixth after their first defeat of the season.

Leicester City 1 Liverpool 2: Reds stay perfect despite Alisson error

    4F98257A00000578-6121443-image-a-74_1535804623904.jpg

Alisson's abysmal second-half blunder failed to prevent Liverpool from maintaining their perfect start to the Premier League season in a 2-1 win at Leicester City on Saturday.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino proved enough for the visitors to notch a fourth successive victory, although it would have been easier had Alisson not gifted a first Leicester goal to Rachid Ghezzal.

The Brazil international, unbeaten in his previous three outings, was punished in the 63rd minute for a sloppy attempt at playing out from the back that threatened to derail what was otherwise a comfortable trip to the King Power Stadium.

The error set up a potentially nervy final half-hour, but the Reds ably saw out the contest to seal maximum points from their opening four Premier League outings for the first time in their history.Liverpool netted three on their last visit to Leicester and they almost matched that tally in an efficient first 45 minutes.

The in-form Mane made up for Mohamed Salah's uncharacteristic early miss by stabbing home a close-range opener in the 10th minute, before Firmino was afforded far too much space to head home James Milner's corner on the stroke of half-time.

Alisson made a smart stop from Demarai Gray between the goals but the goalkeeper was at fault for offering the Foxes a way back into the contest. The former Roma man compounded Virgil van Dijk's errant back-pass with a casual attempt at turning away from substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, who robbed him of the ball and squared for Ghezzal to open his Premier League account.

But with Jamie Vardy serving the final match of his three-game suspension, the Foxes lacked the cutting edge to further trouble Jurgen Klopp's men, who momentarily stretched their lead at the summit to three points.

Real Madrid 4 Leganes 1: Benzema & Bale lead rout of local rivals

    4F9C7BB000000578-0-image-a-97_1535833247124.jpg

Real Madrid made it three wins from three in LaLiga this season with a 4-1 victory over Leganes at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Karim Benzema scored twice in between goals from Gareth Bale and Sergio Ramos to secure the three points, despite a scare when Guido Carrillo made it 1-1 when he fired a penalty past debutant goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The victory puts Julen Lopetegui's side top of the table, two points above Celta Vigo, who beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 at Balaidos.

Bale stretched his scoring run to seven consecutive league games 17 minutes in, volleying in Dani Carvajal's header from 12 yards out, although goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar should arguably have done better to keep it out.

Leganes went into the game having failed to win any of their 10 Madrid derbies in LaLiga, but they snatched an equaliser 24 minutes in when Carrillo swept home from the penalty spot after Casemiro tripped Javier Eraso.

The goal seemed to disrupt Madrid's rhythm, although they continued to have nearly 80 per cent of the possession, with Cuellar denying Benzema's volley in one of the few chances before half-time.

But Benzema put them back ahead three minutes after the break with a well-aimed header, the goal eventually given after a VAR review overturned a foul awarded against the striker. There was no doubt about Benzema's second, though, as he collected Marcelo's pass, played a one-two with Luka Modric and rifled a shot into the bottom-left corner from the edge of the area.

Captain Ramos added a fourth from the penalty spot 66 minutes in to move the European champions onto nine points and send them into the international break in a positive mood.
