'Neymar world-class but not a defender' - Klopp admits Liverpool targeted PSG star

Neymar was targeted by Liverpool due to his defensive weaknesses, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed after the Reds' last-gasp Champions League win.

Roberto Firmino came off the bench to rifle in a stoppage-time winner at Anfield after Paris Saint-Germain had battled back from 2-0 down in Tuesday's Group C opener.

Neymar was involved in creating Kylian Mbappe's late equaliser but the Brazilian otherwise struggled to exert much influence on a pulsating contest, with PSG's attack lacking fluidity.

And Neymar regularly failed to track runs from Trent Alexander-Arnold, with one such foray from the Liverpool right-back contributing to Daniel Sturridge's headed opener.

Klopp revealed Liverpool deliberately targeted the PSG left wing as he knew Neymar would not follow Alexander-Arnold when the defender got forward."They changed a bit of the system, we expected it and didn't think too much about it," Klopp told BT Sport.

"Neymar on the left was not a bad idea and makes defending more difficult, we needed more focus and we felt we did really well."We covered a lot of yards and closed all the gaps and when we had the ball made them run and used the right wing."Neymar is world-class but not a defender so we tried to do that."

Sturridge was making his first Champions League start since March 2012, with Firmino only deemed fit enough for the bench after missing training due to an eye injury. The Brazil international made the difference with a brilliant 91st-minute winner, celebrating by covering up his eye, but Klopp made sure he highlighted Sturridge's contribution.

"Super game from Daniel, I told him before the game that I never saw him as fit as he is now," Klopp added."And he used that to get all over the park and keep the ball for us."Then you can bring Bobby Firmino on and that helps a lot. I loved his goal celebration."

Thomas Meunier's low volley cut Liverpool's lead in the first half and the Belgium international suggested PSG should consider following the Reds' tactical plan.

"We have done what we could, we are trying to introduce a new tactical plan and for the moment we are not doing too badly," Meunier said to RMC Sport."The pressure was strong with a super high Liverpool block. We also tried to keep our block a little higher. To play with a low block at this level is to shoot yourself in the foot. We managed quite well defensively.

"Nothing catastrophic, we have all the cards in hand for qualification. We could take Liverpool as an example with their deep, simple, fast game, with a lot of intensity."

Mourinho calls on Man Utd to follow Federer's lead amid Young Boys pitch concerns

Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United to be inspired by Roger Federer and ignore concerns over the pitch in their Champions League meeting with Young Boys.

Mourinho will not risk Antonio Valencia due to concerns over the Swiss side's artificial surface, with the right-back having missed the start of the Premier League season with a knee injury.

He will sit out United's Group H opener at the Stade de Suisse on Wednesday, which could hand right-back Diogo Dalot his debut for the club.

And Mourinho opted to use an unexpected example in the form of tennis great Federer when discussing the pitch in his pre-match news conference.

"We decided not to bring Antonio because his knee is not a knee that needs an artificial pitch at all," Mourinho told a news conference. "So we brought [Luke] Shaw back into the squad, I told already he is playing tomorrow, and we have Diogo, [Ashley] Young and [Matteo] Darmian ready to play.

"I don't want to use that [the pitch], especially before the match, as a possible excuse for a not very good performance. Everyone knows its different but I had to say, I said last week in Geneva UEFA meetings we had, what can I say...

"As an example, we're in Switzerland, home of one of the best ever tennis players, and I am pretty sure the big man [Federer] is not happy to play on such a surface, but he has to play and win. Everyone knows he has a favourite surface, but he has to win on the surfaces he is not in love with.

"We have to do it, but Antonio is the only one we need to protect with his clinical situation, apart from that we give everything and try to win."

Shaw will return to the United team after missing Saturday's Premier League win against Watford due to a head injury sustained on England duty.

Valencia 0 Juventus 2: Pjanic hits the spot after Ronaldo sees red

    4405206-6186249-image-a-78_1537389255546.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off on his Champions League debut for Juventus but two Miralem Pjanic penalties secured the 10 men a dramatic 2-0 win at Valencia.Ex-Real Madrid forward Ronaldo was dismissed just 29 minutes into his much-anticipated return to Spain following an off-the-ball incident involving Jeison Murillo.

Referee Felix Brych consulted with his assistants and brandished a straight red for Ronaldo's apparent attempt to pull Murillo's hair, meaning the 33-year-old, who was reduced to tears in the aftermath to the dismissal, could miss a reunion with former club Manchester United in October, if UEFA chooses to extend his mandatory one-match ban.

While Ronaldo’s presence has raised hopes Juve can end their 22-year wait for European success, the Bianconeri demonstrated they can still prosper without him as Pjanic's spot-kicks either side of half-time secured a hard-earned three points on the road.

Mario Mandzukic, Sami Khedira and Blaise Matuidi all squandered gilt-edged chances before Ronaldo was given his marching orders, although Massimiliano Allegri’s men refused to be flustered by the incident.

Pjanic kept his cool amid the heated Mestalla atmosphere, converting his first penalty on the stroke of half-time following Daniel Parejo's wild high boot on former team-mate Joao Cancelo, who moments earlier had cracked a shot against the crossbar.

Official Brych pointed to the spot again six minutes after the interval, allowing the Bosnia and Herzegovina international to double the Serie A side's advantage after Murillo had bundled Giorgio Chiellini to the floor.

Midfielder Pjanic picked out the bottom right corner and Allegri's men held on for a winning start in Group H, though not without a late twist to an action-packed tale as Wojciech Szczesny saved a contentiously awarded Parejo penalty in stoppage time.

:love:Young Boys 0 Manchester United 3: Pogba double inspires Red Devils

    4403940-6185861-image-a-62_1537386096979.jpg

Paul Pogba scored twice as Manchester United kicked off their Champions League Group H campaign with a 3-0 win over Young Boys on Wednesday.

Jose Mourinho's side were lucky not to be behind after a sluggish start against the Swiss champions, but World Cup winner Pogba handed them an undeserved lead after 35 minutes with a superb finish from 16 yards. He followed that up with a cool penalty as United – who handed a debut to Diogo Dalot at right-back - went into the interval with a two-goal lead.

Pogba then turned provider in the 66th minute, feeding Anthony Martial for his first goal since January 20, as United got their Champions League campaign off to a resounding start.Young Boys almost took a stunning lead after just eight minutes, but Guillaume Hoarau's header from 12 yards flashed just wide of David de Gea's post.

The United goalkeeper was called into action again to tip over Mohamed Ali Camara's fizzing long-range drive before Marcus Rashford clipped an effort against the outside of the post as United belatedly woke from their slumber.Pogba netted his first 10 minutes before the interval, shuffling the ball into space just inside the penalty area and steering a fine finish into the roof of David von Ballmoos' net.

He grabbed his second in the 44th minute, stroking home a spot-kick after Kevin Mbabu was harshly judged to have deliberately handled Luke Shaw's cross in the area.Pogba was proving too hot for the hosts to handle and set up United's third shortly after the hour, laying the ball into the path of Martial, whose right-foot effort from 10 yards was deflected past Von Ballmoos by Camara.

Substitute Juan Mata whipped a late effort narrowly past the post, while Romelu Lukaku saw a late effort denied by the offside flag, but it mattered little as a Pogba-inspired United got their Champions League campaign off to a flier.

Real Madrid 3 Roma 0: Isco stunner sets up winning start for Champions League holders

    4404192-0-image-a-13_1537386841467.jpg

Isco's perfect free-kick paved the way for Real Madrid to start their latest Champions League defence with a 3-0 home win against Roma, with Gareth Bale and Mariano Diaz also on target.

Madrid are aiming to win the tournament for the fourth year in a row and Julen Lopetegui's side cruised to a comfortable Group G victory at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Isco took set-piece duties following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, and on the same night his former team-mate was sent off against Valencia, the Spain international whipped in a superb strike from 25 yards just before the break.

And Bale, scorer of a brace in Madrid's defeat of Liverpool in last season's final, made sure of the points with a placed finish after racing through on goal from Luka Modric's pass, with substitute Mariano going on to add a third in stoppage time.Bale had a great chance to open the scoring in the fourth minute, but he rifled wide after collecting an excellent lofted pass from Toni Kroos, then Robin Olsen brilliantly denied Isco.

Kroos and Bale wasted further chances but while Olsen showed off his acrobatics to tip over a Sergio Ramos header he was helpless as Madrid took the lead on the stroke of half-time.Daniele De Rossi brought down Isco and the Spain star curled a brilliant free-kick into the top-left corner, Olsen seemingly deceived by the strike.

Keylor Navas was selected in goal rather than Thibaut Courtois and he parried away a drive from Cengiz Under, with Bale's deflected shot then bouncing back off the crossbar. But the Wales star would not be denied again when Modric sent him clear, Bale arrowing a shot home with his trusty left boot.

Substitute Marco Asensio almost added a late third with a delightful no-look finish, but Mariano did wrap up the scoring in the first minute of added time with a fantastic turn and strike into the top-right corner on his first appearance since returning from Lyon.

Manchester City 1 Lyon 2: Cornet and Fekir stun Champions League favourites at home

    4404826-0-image-a-27_1537388542968.jpg

Manchester City's Champions League campaign got off to a shocking start on Wednesday, as Maxwel Cornet and Nabil Fekir secured Lyon a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium over the competition favourites.

Pep Guardiola was forced to watch the Group F opener from his lofty perch in the stands due to a touchline ban, and while City were largely dominant, Lyon's dynamism in attack caused problems and they ultimately managed to hang on.

City controlled possession, but two errors from Fernandinho allowed Lyon to punish them, with Fekir and Cornet giving Bruno Genesio's men a shock – albeit deserved – 2-0 lead at half-time.

Leroy Sane's entrance made a difference and he swiftly set up Bernardo Silva to pull one back, but Lyon dug deep and held off City's late onslaught to secure a famous victory.City had no problem establishing control and went close 16 minutes in, but Aymeric Laporte's header from a tight angle came back off the post.

Lyon capitalised 10 minutes later – Cornet supplying a cool finish into the bottom-left corner after Fabian Delph missed Fekir's cross.City should have been given the chance to level from the spot in the 40th minute when Rafael da Silva tripped Gabriel Jesus, but the referee ignored protests and Lyon stunned their hosts again shortly after.

Fekir held off two defenders and then drilled an effort into the bottom-right corner from 20 yards.City introduced Sane from the bench in the 55th minute to boost their impetus, but a few moments later they had a lucky escape – former Manchester United man Memphis Depay hitting the post from just outside the area.

Sane soon inspired City to get one back, pulling a pass back for Silva to guide home, but it was not enough and Lyon claimed the points.

Benfica 0 Bayern Munich 2: Sanches returns to haunt his former club

    4405728-6186587-image-m-28_1537390438119.jpg

Renato Sanches marked his return to the Bayern Munich fold with a superb goal against his former club as Niko Kovac's side ran out 2-0 winners over Benfica in their Champions League Group E encounter.

Having endured a torrid loan spell at Swansea City last term, Sanches was handed his first Bayern start since May 2017 at Estadio da Luz, and - after playing a part in Robert Lewandowski's opener - the youngster duly repaid Kovac's faith in the 54th minute when he got on the end of James Rodriguez's delicate cross. However, things could have been different if not for Manuel Neuer, who kept Benfica at bay with a string of impressive saves either side of the interval.

Serge Gnabry had a goal disallowed for offside as Bayern looked to extend their lead, but that decision mattered little as Kovac continued his winning start.
Bayern were ahead in the 10th minute - Sanches picking out Franck Ribery, who combined with David Alaba to cut back for Lewandowski to tuck home.Arjen Robben and James both passed up chances as Bayern dominated, and their profligacy would have been punished had Neuer not kept out Eduardo Salvio's strike.

But Benfica's hopes of a comeback took a blow shortly after the interval - Sanches on hand to hammer home from close range to cap off a move that he started.
Jardel and Ruben Dias tried their luck with headers around the hour, but Neuer was in top form to keep Bayern's clean sheet intact.

Substitute Gnabry thought he had put the game beyond all doubt in the 68th minute, only for the offside flag to prevent Bayern adding further gloss to the victory.

Ajax 3 AEK Athens 0: Tagliafico at the double in opening win

Nicolas Tagliafico was the unlikely hero as Ajax got their Champions League Group E campaign off to a winning start with a 3-0 victory over AEK Athens.

The Eredivisie side were stifled before the break by a resilient AEK outfit, who had the best chance of the first half through Andre Simoes. But Erik ten Hag's men were quick out of the blocks after the interval, defender and highly infrequent goalscorer Tagliafico making the breakthrough 51 seconds into the half.

AEK could offer little in response and their spirits were broken when substitute Donny van de Beek volleyed in to double Ajax's lead, with Tagliafico then enjoying a huge slice of fortune when his off-balance strike flew into the net in stoppage time.
Ajax - without the injured Matthijs de Ligt - made a lively start in the first competitive meeting between the two sides since the 1994-95 edition of the tournament, Dusan Tadic's cross causing problems inside the first five minutes.Greek champions AEK, back among Europe's elite after an absence of more than a decade, almost delivered the perfect sucker-punch, but the unmarked Simoes headed Petros Mantalos' free-kick wide.

The normal pattern of play resumed soon after, Hakim Ziyech taking aim from 20 yards, only to see his shot fly over the crossbar, while Tadic continued to threaten with his passing and vision.Morocco international Ziyech did call Vasilios Barkas into action with his next attempt, but the goalkeeper was easily equal to a low, skidding effort.

AEK's Ezequiel Ponce was then thwarted by a timely defensive block at the end of a first half in which the hosts were largely frustrated. That frustration evaporated within a minute of the restart, David Neres' delivery swept in by Tagliafico, who had a header brilliantly kept out by Barkas just before the hour mark.

An offside flag wiped out an excellent finish from Van de Beek, who had replaced the hugely disappointing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, but Ajax had the result in the bag when the midfielder lashed home a second with 13 minutes remaining.

Tagliafico's spectacular mishit put the icing on the cake, his wry smile suggesting very strongly that good fortune, rather than skill, saw it fly into the top corner.

Mourinho: Dalot can play at Man United for more than 10 years

Jose Mourinho believes Diogo Dalot can spend more than a decade at Old Trafford as the Manchester United manager lauded the debutant.

Portuguese right-back Dalot made his debut in United's 3-0 win at Young Boys in their Champions League opener on Wednesday. The 19-year-old swapped Porto for United in the off-season and made his first appearance in Bern, where Dalot impressed in defence and attack.

"I want to be also nice to Luke [Shaw] because I think both play at the same level," Mourinho told reporters. "I think Diogo and Shaw, they played very, very, well.

"Our danger came from both, both of them. They had fantastic movement, they had depth, they had crosses, they had assists. They were involved in the most dangerous actions and they defended also well. So I think both of them, they were very, very good.

"But of course Luke is here for a few years, he's playing since the beginning of the season and for Diogo first match for the club after a knee surgery. I think very good, solid performance."I think everyone could see the potential and everyone could see that he's a 19-year-old player who has more than 10 years to play for Manchester United."

Paul Pogba's brace gave United the perfect start to their Champions League Group H campaign.United have now won three matches on the bounce, having suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

"At half-time I told the players it was the third time in a row that we arrived at half-time winning 2-0," Mourinho added. "Against Burnley we didn't finish it off but didn't concede; at Watford we did concede and we were in trouble.

"Today we could have had more of that but in the second half the players were responsible and ambitious to score the third goal. What I like most is after two defeats, we've had three victories in a row away with solid performances. Now let's go home again on Saturday."

Mourinho's United welcome in-form Wolves to Old Trafford on Saturday.
