:(Scholes in dig at Lukaku: I'm not sure Man Utd will ever win the league with him!

Manchester United may never win the league with Romelu Lukaku as their main striker, according to former midfielder Paul Scholes.Lukaku joined United in 2017 in a £75 million (€85m/$98m) deal, and has since scored 31 goals in 62 games for the club.

The Belgium international has already netted four times in eight games this season, but Scholes is not convinced by the former Chelsea and Everton forward, insisting that he does not have the all-round game to truly be considered an elite forward.

"I'm just not sure you are ever going to win the league with a goal scorer like him," Scholes told ESPN . "I don't think his play outside of the box is good enough.

"I'm not sure if he works hard enough but he's still a young man who has done well and scored a lot of goals. He's quick and strong, but Lukaku is one of many United players who look like they're short of confidence."I don't think he realises how good he can be, but he needs help because who else can play centre-forward at United now?"

Indeed, Scholes does not believe that either Anthony Martial or Marcus Rashford are able to step into the fold when Lukaku's form dips, with Jose Mourinho insistent on playing both out wide.

And the former England midfielder believes that competition for places is key, pointing to the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson had four centre-forwards he could call upon when the club won the treble in 1999."Maybe, but they look like wingers," he replied, when it was put to him that Martial and Rashford can play through the middle.

"And they're getting slagged off by the manager. We had four centre-forwards - [Andy] Cole, Teddy [Sheringham], Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and [Dwight] Yorke - and when they through bad spells, which every footballer does, someone else was waiting to come in.

"That helped their performances because they knew that if they didn't perform then they would be taken off. Maybe Lukaku needs that, too."Scholes has also claimed that even Lionel Messi would struggle in this United team , while also questioning the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.Mourinho's side are back in Premier League action on October 20, where they will face in-form Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

'Ambitious' Maguire wants Champions League football

England defender Harry Maguire is focused on Leicester City, but says he dreams of playing in the Champions League.

Maguire, 25, was linked with a move to Manchester United this summer after helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals in Russia. But the move was not to be, and the defender finds himself still with the Foxes this season.

Leicester sit 10th in the league through eight matches, having picked up just four wins, and sit six full points back of fourth-placed Arsenal with the clubs set to square off this weekend. While the centre-back said he simply wanted to keep performing for Leicester, he also made clear that he would like to play in the top competitions in the world, including the Champions League, in the future. "I'm an ambitious player," he told The Premier League Show.

"If you're not an ambitious footballer, you're in the wrong game really."Everyone wants to play at the top level, everyone wants to play in the biggest tournaments in the world, so obviously the Champions League is one."

Maguire arrived at Leicester from Hull City in 2017, and made his international debut soon after.
Despite the speculation over his future, Maguire feels he owes Leicester."I want to concentrate fully on Leicester this year. See where it takes the club and see where we go from there," he said.

"The platform they gave me to go and play at a World Cup is something I'll never forget, so it's a big part of me wanting to show something back."

Why Chelsea can’t take Man Utd lightly – Giggs

Ryan Giggs believes that Manchester United are capable of upsetting Chelsea in Saturday’s Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge.

Jose Mourinho’s side have made a slow start to the season, winning only four of their first eight matches, thereby facing the prospect of falling 10 points behind the leaders if they lose at the weekend.

Giggs, though, believes United’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford prior to the international break shows just why undefeated Chelsea cannot afford to be complacent going into the fixture.

“There's lots being spoken about Manchester United and Jose Mourinho, but if you go back to the last game against Newcastle then them coming back like that you'd hope would give them massive confidence,” the Old Trafford legend told Sky Sports.

“This is the period that United need to be getting up for the games and I wouldn't be surprised if they come through this period pretty well because they are capable of playing against and matching the good teams.“With the attacking ability they've got they've always got a chance.

“For example, Anthony Martial didn't play well in the first half but in the second he came out flying and that's nothing to do with the manager, that's the player doing it for themselves, so sometimes you can't put everything on the manager.

“They got three goals in the last game so obviously the attacking threats are there, obviously you'd like to get that attacking intent for 90 minutes but if you play like that against Chelsea and go 1-0 down it's a long way back - you can possibly get away with it against so-called lesser teams.”

Prior to the victory over the Magpies, United had been in the midst of a four-game winless run, including a 3-1 loss against West Ham in the league, as well as home draws against Wolves and Valencia, plus a defeat on penalties against Championship side Derby in the League Cup.

Bale back in full Real Madrid training

Gareth Bale has returned to full training with Real Madrid to provide a boost to under-pressure coach Julen Lopetegui.

Bale was replaced towards the end of a 1-0 La Liga loss away to Deportivo Alaves in Madrid's last match before the international break. That defeat extended Madrid's run without a goal to four matches in all competitions, the longest they have gone without scoring since 1985.

Bale still reported for international duty for Wales, but ultimately did not feature for his nation.

The winger missed the friendly with Spain, and then left Wales prior to their victory over the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League with what head coach Ryan Giggs called muscle fatigue.Prior to coming off early against Alaves, Bale had suffered through injury woes after departing his side's scoreless draw against local rivals Atletico on September 29.

Bale would go on to miss the midweek Champions League visit to CSKA Moscow before his abbreviated return the following weekend. The 29-year-old looked sharp in a clip posted on Madrid's Twitter account, racing onto a pass and rounding goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois before finishing well.

Bale and Madrid are in action at home to Levante on Saturday before taking on Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League three days later.Looming over those matches, however, is the Clasico against Barcelona, which takes place October 28 at the Bernabeu.

Shaw signs five-year Man Utd contract worth £190,000 a week

Luke Shaw has signed a new five-year contract at Manchester United worth around £190,000 ($250,000) a week. The club confirmed the improved terms for the England left-back on Thursday, and the new deal makes him one of the Premier League’s highest-earning defenders.

Shaw’s existing contract was due to expire at the end of the 2018-19 season after United had taken up their one-year option on his initial four-year deal, but the club have moved to tie the 23-year-old down for the longer term, with the option again included to keep him for an extra 12 months.

The news completes a significant turnaround in Shaw’s fortunes at United after a turbulent last few years with the club.In 2015 he suffered a serious leg break away to PSV in the Champions League which he later revealed had almost cost him the limb completely .

Then, having returned to the game almost 12 months later, he spent much of the next two years battling to win over manager Jose Mourinho as the Portuguese demanded greater professionalism from the former Southampton defender.

But his sparkling form at the start of the current campaign has solidified Shaw’s position in the starting XI and has now resulted in the club committing to him until the summer of 2023.

Shaw said upon the announcement: “I want to let everyone know that I will give everything I have to repay them and deliver success over the years to come.

"I’m still very young with a lot more to learn and I can’t wait to continue my progress under Jose Mourinho.”Mourinho added: "Luke fully deserves this contract. He understood his development process, he has worked really hard at every level and he always believes in himself which is a great attribute to have."Luke is still young and is improving all the time and he must feel very proud of himself. I am delighted that we are keeping such a talented young English player with a bright future ahead of him.“

Shaw has made 75 appearances for United since arriving from Southampton in 2014, scoring his first goal for the club in August’s 2-1 win over Leicester City.

Rubin Kazan suspended from UEFA competition for FFP breach

Rubin Kazan have been banned from participating in the next UEFA club competition they qualify for over the course of the coming two seasons.

UEFA confirmed the punishment in a statement on Thursday, ruling Russian club Rubin will not be allowed to compete in either the Europa League or Champions League for a single season should they qualify this term or next.Europe's governing body has taken action for Rubin breaking a "settlement agreement".

The statement read: "The adjudicatory chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) has taken a decision in the case of the club Rubin Kazan that had been referred to it by the CFCB chief investigator, due to breach of the Settlement Agreement.

"The club is excluded from participating in the next UEFA club competition for which it would otherwise qualify in the next two seasons."Settlement agreements are often struck when clubs flout Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

UEFA confirmed that Rubin's punishment relates to the breaking of such an agreement which was made in May 2014 after Rubin failed to comply with FFP.
Rubin currently occupy the final European berth in the Russian Premier League, the Tatarstan club sitting fifth after 10 matches.

Lopetegui running the risk of Real Madrid sack during alarming slump - Essien

Julen Lopetegui could be sacked by Real Madrid if results do not improve soon, according to Michael Essien.Lopetegui has overseen Madrid's worst goalscoring run since 1985, with Los Blancos failing to find the net in their last four games in all competitions.

Defeats to Sevilla and Deportivo Alaves in La Liga and a reverse at CSKA Moscow in the Champions League have increased the pressure on the coach, who took charge in sensational circumstances after he was fired by Spain just before the World Cup.

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has said it would be "crazy" to dismiss Lopetegui, while fellow defender Nacho Fernandez indicated the team are with the former Porto boss "to the death".Lopetegui has denied fearing the sack but Essien, who played for Madrid in a loan spell during the 2012-13 season, suggested he could be dispensed with if their form does not improve quickly.

"Real Madrid are one the biggest clubs, so you can imagine the pressure," Essien said to Omnisport. "We all hope he will do well."It's a big club and if you're not going to get the results you know what happens next."

Essien is best remembered for a nine-year spell at Chelsea, who broke the world transfer record for a goalkeeper to sign Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for €80 million (£72m/$92m) in August. The former Ghana midfielder is impressed with how the Spain international is settling in at Stamford Bridge.

"So far, so good," Essien said. "Hopefully he will continue like this."

Mourinho: I don't understand story of attacking football

Jose Mourinho says it is vital that Manchester United focus on defending as the club looks to return to form following a thrilling win over Newcastle. The Red Devils came back from 2-0 down to secure a 3-2 victory in their last match, one that reports indicated could have been Mourniho's last at the club.

For Mourinho, the attacking display was impressive, but, for the club to truly steady the ship, defence will be even more important to the Portuguese manager.

"That story of the attacking football - I still don’t understand that story," Mourinho said ahead of Manchester United's clash with Chelsea."Because for me you can only play attacking football when you have the ball. You need the ball. When the opposition has the ball you have to defend."I want my team, when the opponent has the ball, I want the ball," he added, "and you can only recover the ball if your opponent loses or if you recover or if you provoke a mistake in your opponent, for all that you need to defend.

"When you have the ball you can play a different way and normally adapted to the qualities of your players. That is what I want."We try [to play that way]. The key is for the players to be able to do it."

Mourinho is set to return to Stamford Bridge this weekend, although the former Chelsea manager insists the trip to London will be "just another game".The current Chelsea boss, Maurizio Sarri, recently came to Mourinho's defense as criticism continues, calling his counterpart his better while complimenting "The Special One".

Following the match against Chelsea, Mourinho and Manchester United host Juventus in the club's return to Champions League play.

Guardiola: I might have got it wrong with 'incredible' Joe Hart

Pep Guardiola has admitted that he may have erred in releasing goalkeeper Joe Hart at the start of his tenure at Manchester City. The former England No.1 was declared surplus to requirements in 2016 when Pep arrived at the Etihad Stadium, with Claudio Bravo drafted in from Barcelona to replace him.

While Bravo has endured mixed fortunes at City and ultimately lost his place to Brazil's Ederson, Hart endured a difficult loan spell with Torino in Serie A before moving to West Ham and later Burnley.

Now, as Hart prepares for an emotional Etihad reunion in the colours of his new club, Pep recognises that releasing the shot-stopper was not an easy decision.

"I know how tough it was for the fans, for the people. He was an incredible keeper and had incredible results here in the club," he told reporters."That's why it was not easy for me, to take a decision."I'm not always taking decisions that are right. I have made in my career good decisions and very bad decisions, but you have to take it in the right moment and at the right time.

"Sometimes I took it and afterwards I've regretted. That's what it is - that happens."Still a popular figure at the club at which he spent a decade, Hart is set to receive a rousing reception on Saturday.Prior to the match City confirmed that a training pitch at the club's academy will carry his name, with a presentation planned ahead of kick-off.

"I think there is no doubt how important he was and is. Tomorrow you will see how people appreciate what he has done for this club," Pep added.
"Normally the player thinks of himself, himself, himself - it's not easy - but he put himself a little bit in my position and said he understood perfectly. That's why I appreciate a lot his behaviour."Hart made a total of 348 appearances for City, having moved to the club from League Two side Shrewsbury while still a teenager.

He has been ever-present in the Premier League for Burnley this season, helping the Clarets to two wins and two draws in their first eight outings.

:(Mourinho: I would love Hazard at Man United

Jose Mourinho has said that he would love to have Eden Hazard join him at Manchester United, but conceded that Chelsea would be unlikely to sell their star player to a Premier League rival.

Mourinho managed Hazard at Chelsea during the Portuguese's second spell at the club, with the playmaker instrumental in the Blues' 2014-15 Premier League title triumph.Hazard scored 14 top-flight goals during that campaign but was one of a number of Chelsea's high-profile players to reportedly fall out with Mourinho the following season.
Currently the league's leading scorer with seven goals this term, Hazard has recaptured his best form under Maurizio Sarri, although he told Belgian outlet HLN during the international break that he wishes to work under Mourinho again.

Speaking ahead of the Red Devils' trip to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, the Man Utd boss told a press conference: "I would love to have him in Manchester United but I don't think Chelsea will be selling to Manchester United so it's not a problem.

"History says that when Eden Hazard is the best player in the Premier League, Chelsea is the champion. It happened with me, it happened with Antonio [Conte]."Chelsea is top of the league now because he is the kind of player that can make a huge difference.

"Chelsea is led by experience and intelligent people in football. I think they would never sell Eden to Manchester United."I think he is just a nice kid. We had a good relationship, we were champions together. He was for the first time best player in the Premier League with me, so I think the feelings are good.

"When the feelings are good you say nice things, when they are not good you don't say so much nice things."

Mourinho is a better manager than me and he is still 'The Special One', says Maurizio Sarri

Maurizio Sarri says that Manchester United's under-fire manager Jose Mourinho should be considered the better coach after winning almost every top major honour throughout his career.

Chelsea are currently sitting in second place, just below champions Manchester City on goal difference, with the Red Devils due to visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The former Napoli coach has won promotion in the lower leagues during his career but never a major honour, as he targets success this season with his new club.

Sarri thinks that Mourinho's record of 20 major honours means that he has proven himself to be 'the Special One', a reference to the Portuguese's famous proclamation at his unveiling in his first spell at Stamford Bridge. “The Special One is Mourinho,” he said, before talking about his rival's influence in football. “The results speak for him. So, at the moment, he is better than me for sure. I hope to improve myself in the future, but at the moment I have to say he's better than me.

“I think he is different. I think that I have my character, and my character probably is different to his character. So I have to be myself, always. Otherwise I am not credible.

“He has won everything everywhere. So I need to win if I want to compare myself to him.“[Mourinho's success] is not all just in the past - I think he will also be able to win in the future. He is really one of the best. Maybe the best. I think he will be able to win again.“At the moment, it's not possible [to compare us]. You are talking about one of the best coaches in the world, and I'm not - at the moment - one of the best.

“I'd like to win something because, at the moment, I need to win. I have won in Serie B, Serie C, Serie D like the Championship, League One and League Two here in England. “But now I need to win at this level.”

The Chelsea boss came into football management at a late stage in his career after a period working in the banking sector, working his way up from the amateur leagues in Italy.

He eventually earned himself a chance at Napoli and repaid them by pushing Juventus all the way in a title race, where his side were unlucky to miss out on winning Serie A, despite earning themselves 91 points.

Sarri's success came long after Mourinho departed Serie A, where he won an unprecedented treble, and the 59-year-old thought he may never get the chance to face the Portuguese boss when down in the lower leagues.

“My target in that period was to be a professional coach. I didn't think that I was able to arrive at a Champions League club. It was incredible at that moment, so I think I am lucky. You need to be lucky.

“To be in the right place in the right moment. First of all, at Empoli, I had a very young team. The players were very young but very good. “I remember that we won Serie B with [Daniele] Rugani, who was 19. Elseid Hysaj, who was 19. [Riccardo] Saponara, who was 20.

“[Lorenzo] Tonelli was 21. Nobody knew them at that moment, but they were very good. So I was lucky.”Sarri has been receiving plaudits for his style of play and his ability to implement it quickly, as Chelsea transformed from their comparatively more pragmatic style of football under Antonio Conte and Mourinho.

Part of the criticism thrown at Mourinho is that many believe that his approach is no longer suited to the modern game, with other coaches at major clubs opting for a high pressing game where the aim is to keep possession.

Sarri may not be playing the 'Mourinho way' but he is wary of Saturday's rival and how he will set up his team.“The problem is not the way of football, if I like it or not. The focus is he is able to win,” Sarri continued. “He has won everything everywhere, so probably that means he is right. Maybe they will play on us or maybe they will play their football. Because they can play their football. They are a wonderful team.

“I think that we need to expect everything because we have to play against a very strong team, and usually a very strong team play very well in important matches. So we need to be prepared to face everything.”

The differences between Sarri and Mourinho extend beyond the systems they use on the pitch, with the latter coming across more softly spoken than his opponent on Saturday. However, according to Sarri there is one thing that they do have in common.“The character is different, but maybe the level of determination is the same,” Sarri said on whether he has what it takes to win as much as Mourinho.

“But I think that, without determination, it's impossible to arrive here from a non-professional team. So I can speak very calmly, but I think my level of determination is the top level.”

Manchester United fined for late arrival and delayed kick-off against Valencia

Manchester United have been fined €15,000 for the late arrival and subsequent behind-schedule kick-off of their Champions League game with Valencia, while Napoli must pay €34,000 for the setting off of fireworks against Liverpool.United were affected by heavy traffic congestion in Manchester ahead of the match on October 2, which finished 0-0.

The club confirmed 25 minutes prior to the initial kick-off time of 20:00 BST that the match had been delayed until 20:05 BST due to the late arrival of their bus.

UEFA has fined them €5,000 for the late arrival of the team, and €10,000 for a delayed start to the match, while Valencia will pay €1,000 for the setting off of fireworks.
Napoli's fine is significantly larger, however, after UEFA charged them for the same offence as Valencia at Stadio San Paolo during the 1-0 win over Liverpool on October 3.

The Serie A club were also found guilty of blocking stairways in the stadium, as were CSKA Moscow during their 1-0 defeat of Real Madrid, copping a €12,000 fine.

And CSKA's trip to Viktoria Plzen in September is also the subject of a financial penalty for the Czech side, who must pay €10,000 for the throwing of objects during the game.

'Madrid can't look back, only forward' - Lopetegui confident of Real revival

Julen Lopetegui insists Real Madrid cannot afford to dwell on their woeful run of form and is continuing to ignore speculation over his future as head coach.

Madrid return to domestic action against Levante on Saturday after the international break looking to halt a run of four straight games in all competitions without a win, in which they have failed to score a goal.

It is their worst drought in front of goal since 1985 and has already led to suggestions that Lopetegui, who was appointed as Zinedine Zidane's successor in June, is facing the axe at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But Lopetegui has seen enough from his team to remain convinced Madrid can get out of their rut and is not planning on signing players as a solution."No [we don't need to sign players], I think the solution is in every game. I'm completely confident in players and the squad we've got, I think we'll have a great season," he told a news conference.

"There is a long way to go in everything, I think we're close to arriving at one of the peaks you have in the season, we'll be very strong very soon."I think we'll have a great season and we're focused to face a complicated opponent who are in great form. We can't look back, we can only look forward."

Asked if the players were anxious about their poor form in front of goal, Lopetegui replied: "We'll just try to do what we try to do and focus on our play. We're not worried about the record or anything, we just have to create chances and take them, that's the best way we can be in this game."

Madrid's latest defeat, a late 1-0 reverse at Deportivo Alaves, saw the pressure crank up a notch on Lopetegui, who was forced to insist he did not fear for his job.

And the former Spain boss does not believe focusing on aspects outside of his control will help the team.

He said: "I'm not worried about what people are saying, I'm not taking much notice. We're worried about Levante and ourselves, like who's fit and who isn't - the rest is not in my control, so I try not to take too much notice. It doesn't help us win if I take notice of that."Lopetegui was asked if his plans had changed given Madrid's struggles and the 52-year-old said it is inevitable that a coach must adapt during the course of a season.

"Plans change all the time, you have to keep evolving, keep changing things. You go into a season knowing what you've got and change when circumstances come along," he said. "I keep believing in what we're doing well and try to change certain aspects, but that's no different to any other team.

"We're at a point where there are question marks over every team in every competition, nothing is decided and there is a long way to go."

Sarri: Mourinho deserves respect and Man Utd are the best in Premier League

Maurizio Sarri believes Jose Mourinho deserves more respect for the success he has achieved as a coach and feels Manchester United have the strongest squad in the Premier League.

United visit Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday looking to continue their recovery from a disastrous start to the season which saw Mourinho's future called into question.

Reports of a fallout with Red Devils star Paul Pogba and a four-game winless streak put his job in danger before their comeback win over Newcastle United two weeks ago.

But the former Real Madrid coach should be trusted to turn the situation around given everything he has won, says Chelsea boss Sarri."We are talking about a coach who has won everything. He has won everywhere," he told reporters. "I think I have to respect him. But I think that you all have to respect him as well.

"I think he is a very good coach, a very good manager and one of the best in the world. We are talking only about eight matches, they are doing well in the Champions League so they can improve in the Premier League, we are talking about two months."They are a very strong team. Player by player the best in the Premier League. I think Manchester City are better as a team at the moment, but player by player United are very strong."

Mourinho had several clashes with Sarri's predecessor at Chelsea, Antonio Conte, last season, as the pair traded verbal jibes in press conferences. But Sarri believes emotion got the better of the two coaches and does not expect a similar relationship to develop between him and Mourinho.

"I don't know the problem with Antonio. I think that, on the pitch sometimes, we are a little bit nervous. A little bit tense. You can say anything in that moment. But I think that it's not important, but I think Conte respects Mourinho and vice versa.”

Pogba urges Man Utd to 'help each other' amid reports of rifts and divides

Paul Pogba is looking for Manchester United to “help each other” after facing accusations of divisions within the camp this season. The opening to the Red Devils’ 2018-19 campaign has been played out against a backdrop of reports of in-fighting and rifts between certain players and coaches.

The battling spirit on display in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Newcastle prior to the international break helped to silence some of those critics, but there is still plenty of work to be done.

Pogba is aware of that and is looking for a united front to be shown as Jose Mourinho’s side seek to use a remarkable victory over the Magpies as a springboard to bigger and better things.

The France international midfielder told Sky Sports: “You never know what's going to happen in the Premier League, and that's what makes it the most interesting league in the world. 2-0 down, coming back to 3-2, is crazy you know.

"The game is not finished until 90 minutes, you just cannot stop because every situation can change. Premier League is crazy, you have to be focused for 90 minutes, and always in every game you have to give your life. "Everybody has a part, the goalkeeper, the striker, everyone, just to make the effort for the player next to you. The guys see it, and will make more effort.

"I see this team-mate make this run just for me when I'm not in the position; it just gives you energy to make the run too, to tackle to make the space for the other one too. It's just like team spirit, you have to help each other, and that's how you win."

United’s collective will to win is certainly set to be tested over the coming weeks, with crunch clashes approaching in Premier League and Champions League competition. The first of those comes at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with Pogba calling on Mourinho’s men to enjoy the big occasion against Chelsea and play without fear. The World Cup winner added: "For me, those games are the best games to play.

You play against the best players, you play against a big club, a big story. You play football to play those big games with a lot of pressure. That's what you want to play.

"You can see this season [Chelsea] have a lot of possession obviously, they are winning, they have one character you cannot miss in Eden Hazard, they say he is on fire, this time he is probably the best player in the PL right now.

"The team is going well, they have good results, for us we come back from the Newcastle game, 3-2 winning at home, we need points, so it's going to be a tough one. I think they need points, we need points. "The game is going to be very hard, we're playing away. It's a Chelsea vs Man Utd game, you know, so it's a big one."
