Barcelona 5 Real Madrid 1: Suarez treble downs Lopetegui's men

    5504552-6326149-image-a-215_1540746650266.jpg

Luis Suarez hit a hat-trick as Julen Lopetegui's dismal Real Madrid reign appeared to near its end in a 5-1 Clasico humiliation at the hands of Barcelona.

Former Spain boss Lopetegui was said to be on the brink of the sack after losing to Levante last week and he cut a disheartened figure on the Camp Nou touchline as Madrid were dismantled in his 14th game in charge. The irrepressible Suarez led Barca, who were rampant even without Lionel Messi and capitalised on their rivals' failings to move back to the top of LaLiga.

Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring for the champions and Suarez doubled their advantage in a devastating first-half showing, with Marcelo's response shortly after the restart merely a small bump in the road.

Suarez executed a magnificent header and then a gorgeous dinked finish, before Arturo Vidal added the fifth to prompt a party in the stands as Lopetegui, whose side remain ninth, shuffled towards the exit door.

Barcelona swiftly identified the ball in behind as an effective route to goal and so it soon proved. Ivan Rakitic played in Jordi Alba, whose instant control gave him time and space to complete a 30-pass move and pick out Coutinho in the centre for a cool finish after 11 minutes.

Madrid's defensive frailties were again exposed on the half hour as Raphael Varane tripped Suarez in the area and, after a delay as the VAR instructed referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez to study the replay, the felled Barca forward tucked his spot-kick beyond Courtois.

The half-time introduction of Lucas Vazquez belatedly got Madrid further up the pitch and an improved spell was rewarded with Marcelo's goal, his third in as many games.Luka Modric whipped an effort against the foot of the post, but that was the end of Madrid's attacking threat as Barca turned on the style.

Suarez turned home a Sergio Roberto cross with a stunning header and added a delicious chip over Courtois to complete his treble, before Vidal emerged from the bench to get in on the act with a late header at a raucous Camp Nou.

:love:Manchester United 2 Everton 1: Martial maintains top form

    5504938-6326095-image-m-79_1540747518654.jpg

Anthony Martial starred as Manchester United overcame a late scare to edge Everton 2-1 at Old Trafford and give Jose Mourinho a much-needed second win in eight matches.

Having reportedly rejected United's initial offer of a new contract, Martial ensured the week ended with the focus firmly on his talents as he created United's first and scored the second in a scintillating display. The 22-year-old won the penalty that Paul Pogba converted at the second attempt in the 27th minute before lashing home what proved the winner just after half-time.

Chris Smalling, on his 300th United appearance, made their task more difficult than it should have been when his rash challenge allowed Gylfi Sigurdsson to halve the deficit from the spot, but the hosts held firm to quickly move on from their limp Champions League loss to Juventus in midweek.

Romelu Lukaku's omission from the starting XI afforded Martial a prominent role and it was his quick feet that drew the penalty from Idrissa Gueye, who did get a toe to the ball before the attacker's theatrical fall.Jordan Pickford impressively kept out Pogba's initial effort, but the midfielder's stuttering run-up was spared from more scrutiny as he rolled in a fortunate rebound.

It was a role reversal for United's second as Martial gloriously curled a Pogba pass into the bottom-right corner within four minutes of the restart.

Bernard passed up a chance to drag Everton back into it before Smalling's tackle enabled Sigurdsson to grab a consolation from the spot in the 77th minute. The margin should ultimately have been greater but Martial finally let his standard slip in the 94th minute, failing to beat Pickford in a one-on-one.

'Martial has improved everything' - Mourinho 'very happy' with Man Utd winger

Jose Mourinho believes Anthony Martial has improved "everything" about his game following the Frenchman's decisive goal against Everton on Sunday.

The Manchester United manager was full of praise for Martial, who drew a penalty and scored in his side's 2-1 win over the Toffees at Old Trafford. Martial has now scored in three consecutive Premier League games, tallying four goals in that run.

The 22-year-old has started four straight games over all competitions, and his manager says the improvement he has displayed has been comprehensive.

When asked what part of his game Martial has improved, Mourinho told Sky Sports : "Everything. He has the same natural talent that he had one or two years ago but he is improving his way of thinking football, thinking training too, and thinking his role in the team."

Martial's place in the United team has been anything but assured with the Red Devils. The France international started just 26 of his 45 appearances for United last season, as he missed out on Les Bleus' World Cup-winning squad.Mourinho, though, sounded an optimistic note about the future for Martial, who joined United from Monaco in 2015.

"I am really happy with [Martial], Luke Shaw, boys that are improving. They had difficult periods, difficult periods for myself, because I want more from them and I took them to the limits."But in this moment I think both, and in today's case Anthony, was able to do things he was not able to do before. So really, really happy with Anthony."

Martial's future at Old Trafford is anything but assured after he reportedly turned down the club's offer of a new contract this week.Though Martial could eventually depart Old Trafford, Mourinho is more than happy to have him in his team for the time being at least.

"I think he coped well with this development process," Mourinho said in his post-game press conference. "He took quite a long time to understand what we want from him, took quite a long time for his brain, and also his body, to be ready to play the way we want him to.

"But at the moment he is solid, playing very well, and even if he doesn't score, his performance is a solid performance for the team, and that's what we need. So I'm very happy with Anthony."

AC Milan 3 Sampdoria 2: Suso strike settles San Siro thriller

Suso hit a terrific deciding goal as AC Milan eased the growing pressure on Gennaro Gattuso with a riotously entertaining 3-2 home win against Sampdoria in Serie A.

Milan led through Patrick Cutrone but Samp rapidly hit back with Riccardo Saponara and Fabio Quagliarella recording a goal and an assist apiece before Gonzalo Higuain levelled the scores.Suso came up with a second-half winner, though, as Milan bounced back from successive defeats, to rivals Inter in Serie A and Real Betis in the Europa League, in their last two games.

Gattuso's side are still yet to keep a clean sheet in the league but victory lifts the Rossoneri up to fifth in the Serie A table, three points outside the Champions League places.
Milan took the lead in the 17th minute, Cutrone producing a towering header at the back post from a right-wing Suso cross. But 14 minutes later they were behind, Quagliarella feeding Saponara to drill a fine finish into Gianluigi Donnarumma's bottom right corner.

Saponara then turned provider against his old club, floating a perfect cross into the box for Quagliarella to sweep a volleyed finish past Donnarumma. The goals continued to flow and Milan equalised in the 36th minute, Higuain swapping passes with strike partner Cutrone and smashing in a blasted finish.

Emil Audero denied Higuain after the restart as Milan tried to get back ahead, the goalkeeper then making a fine save low to his left to keep out a Suso drive.

But the goalkeeper could do nothing about Suso's brilliant strike in the 62nd minute, the Spain international cutting in off the right flank to whip a beautiful shot across Audero.

Cutrone saw a fourth goal disallowed for a foul on Lorenzo Tonelli and Diego Laxalt hit the post late on, but Davide Calabria limped off in the closing stages to give Gattuso another headache.

Marseille 0 Paris Saint-Germain 2: Super-sub Mbappe keeps champions perfect

Kylian Mbappe scored within four minutes of coming on for Paris Saint-Germain as they claimed a 2-0 win over fierce rivals Marseille on Sunday. The teenager became the first player in Europe's top five leagues to reach 10 goals this season to seal all three points in Le Classique and cement the champions' place at the top of Ligue 1.

Thomas Tuchel's side restored an eight-point gap over second-place Lille after an 11th league win in a row, confirmed by Julian Draxler's injury-time finish, that equals the record start to a campaign set by Tottenham 58 years ago.

PSG's surprising 3-5-1-1 set-up did little to unsettle the Marseille defence in the first half, in which the only major chance of note occurred in stoppage time, when Kevin Strootman cleared Angel Di Maria's shot off the line.It took less than a minute of the second half for Di Maria to force Steve Mandanda into his first save of the match, the keeper parrying a bouncing shot past his left-hand post.

Neymar had been targeted by missiles thrown from the crowd throughout, but he nearly silenced the home fans with a low left-footed drive following a dazzling run into the penalty area.Opposite number 10 Dimitri Payet had a similarly quiet game, although he tested Alphonse Areola with a free-kick, before Tuchel turned to Mbappe in the 62nd minute to try to ignite a spark in his attack.

It did not take long. PSG won back possession in their half, Di Maria quickly sent Mbappe forward on the break and the attacker held off Boubacar Kamara to drill past Mandanda.

Thomas Meunier was denied a second by Mandanda and Jordan Amavi shaved the outside of the upright, but PSG secured the win with practically the last kick of the game, Draxler sliding in to score after Neymar had scuffed Mbappe's pass across goal.

Ramos: Results will determine Lopetegui's fate, not Real Madrid players

Sergio Ramos claims the Real Madrid players will have no input in decisions regarding Julen Lopetegui’s future, with results set to determine the fate of the under-fire coach.

Having only succeeded Zinedine Zidane over the summer, after being relieved of his duties with Spain, a dream job has quickly become a nightmare for the man at the Blancos helm.He arrived amid the usual pre-season wave of expectation at the Santiago Bernabeu, but has his side sat ninth in La Liga on the back of three successive defeats.

The most recent of those saw Madrid hammered 5-1 by arch-rivals Barcelona in a Clasico clash at Camp Nou dominated by the hat-trick heroics of Luis Suarez.Lopetegui has vowed to fight on and oversee a reversal in fortune, but that decision may be taken out of his hands.

Madrid skipper Ramos claims to have no knowledge as to what calls will be made by the club’s board, telling reporters when quizzed on his manager: “We are with the coach to the death. But results determine a lot whether a coach stays.“It is not our decision. So we will stay to the side, let the hours pass and whatever happens will happen. It’s not about the players.”

Casemiro has also spoken out in support of Lopetegui, with the Brazilian midfielder calling for more of the blame during a sorry slump to be piled onto the shoulders of underperforming players.

Madrid find themselves at an important crossroads, though, just a few months into the 2018-19 campaign. They have endured wobbles before, with Zidane having been given the support he required during a memorable reign to land three successive Champions League crowns.

Lopetegui believes he can build on those triumphs and deliver success of his own, but he now finds himself on borrowed time.

Losing the talismanic presence of Cristiano Ronaldo was always going to hit Madrid and their new manager hard, but few could have predicted that they would find the going so tough.

After taking nothing from their last three outings in La Liga, the Blancos are set to turn their attention to Copa del Rey matters on Wednesday when they take on third tier minnows Melilla.

It remains to be seen whether Lopetegui will still be at the helm for that contest, with Madrid set to be back on home soil next weekend when they play host to Real Valladolid.

:(:sorry:Leicester City owner confirmed among dead in tragic helicopter crash

    oozwP5a.jpg

Leicester City owner and chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha has been confirmed among the dead in Saturday night's helicopter crash tragedy at the King Power Stadium.

Emergency services rushed to the stadium after the 1-1 draw with West Ham and the Premier League club have now confirmed that five people died when the helicopter lost control during take-off.

A club statement read: "It is with the deepest regret and a collective broken heart that we confirm our Chairman, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, was among those to have tragically lost their lives on Saturday evening when a helicopter carrying him and four other people crashed outside King Power Stadium. None of the five people on-board survived.

"The primary thoughts of everyone at the club are with the Srivaddhanaprabha family and the families of all those on-board at this time of unspeakable loss.

"In Khun Vichai, the world has lost a great man. A man of kindness, of generosity and a man whose life was defined by the love he devoted to his family and those he so successfully led. Leicester City was a family under his leadership. It is as a family that we will grieve his passing and maintain the pursuit of a vision for the club that is now his legacy."A book of condolence, which will be shared with the Srivaddhanaprabha family, will be opened at King Power Stadium from 8am on Tuesday 30 October for supporters wishing to pay their respects.

"Supporters unable to visit King Power Stadium that wish to leave a message can do so through an online book of condolence, which will be made available via lcfc.com in due course."Both Tuesday’s first-team fixture against Southampton in the EFL Cup and the development squad fixture against Feyenoord in the Premier League International Cup have been postponed.

"Everyone at the club has been truly touched by the remarkable response of the football family, whose thoughtful messages of support and solidarity have been deeply appreciated at this difficult time."

Leicestershire Police have released a statement, which read: “The five people were on board the helicopter when the incident happened. While formal identification has not yet taken place, they are believed to be Leicester City Football Club chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, two members of his staff, Nursara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punpare, pilot Eric Swaffer and passenger Izabela Roza Lechowicz.“The force has been working to ensure that all the relevant next of kin had been informed prior to this information being confirmed publicly.”

Superintendent Steve Potter said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident in which five people are understood have lost their lives.“Emergency services were immediately on scene when the crash happened, working to put out the fire and gain access to the helicopter in attempts to reach those inside. Despite those efforts, there were no survivors.

“The AAIB is now leading an investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash and investigators will remain at the scene to complete their initial enquiries. It is likely to take several days to fully complete the necessary work and to safely deal with the scene of this tragic accident, during that time we ask that both the media and public resist speculating around the cause of the crash.

“We appreciate that both the public and media were keen to be updated on the circumstances and to confirm if those on board the helicopter had survived, but before any detail could be issued publicly, it was vital that all immediate next of kin were informed of the tragic outcome. As our communities will understand, this was a matter that needed to be handled sensitively and with dignity, with the families of the deceased being at the heart of our response, which involved other agencies.

“Our thoughts today are with the families of those who have sadly died, with Leicester City Football Club, and with both football supporters and the wider local community who have all been impacted by the events of last night and the news that those on board the aircraft have not survived.”

The Thai businessman has owned the club since 2010 and is hugely popular among supporters, and their fairytale Premier League title success in 2015-16 will be remembered as his greatest achievement and legacy. On Sunday, thousands of fans descended on a sombre stadium to lay tributes to those who died in the crash before any official confirmation from the club or emergency services had been announced.

"The engine stopped and I turned round and it made a bit of a whirring noise, like a grinding noise," freelance photographer Ryan Brown told BBC Radio Leicester."The helicopter just went silent, I turned round and it was just spinning, out of control. And then there was a big bang and then [a] big fireball."

Srivaddhanaprabha was married with four children. Leicester City's vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, who is Vichai's son, was not at the game. It is unknown who will take control of the club following Vichai's tragic death.

Real Madrid boss Lopetegui to be sacked on Monday with Conte taking his place

Real Madrid will sack manager Julen Lopetegui on Monday with former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte set to be named as his successor, Goal understands. Sunday's dismal Clasico was the final straw for Lopetegui, who watched his side be torn apart in a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona.

The defeat saw Madrid lose three straight Liga matches for the first time since 2009 and left the club in ninth place, seven points behind leaders Barcelona.

Madrid's executives have scheduled a meeting for Monday, where they will make Lopetegui's dismissal official. A formal announcement is set to follow. "We have to take a decision. We can't continue like this any longer," a Real Madrid source told Goal. Speaking after the Clasico, Lopetegui expressed his hope that he would be given the opportunity to guide Madrid out of a sorry slump. He told reporters after a forgettable display in Catalunya: “I feel sad at the moment, but with full strength to remain in charge of this group.

“This is a tough blow, but I am strong enough to know everything can be turned around. There is a long way to go, and I have a lot of faith in this group of players.”
Sergio Ramos, meanwhile, claimed the Madrid players will have no input in decisions regarding Lopetegui’s future, with results set to determine the fate of the under-fire coach.

However, Lopetegui's tenure will end barely four months after it began, with the 52-year-old taking charge in June one day after being fired by Spain on the eve of the World Cup.

The ex-Porto boss oversaw a difficult start to the season for Madrid, who have lost five matches already in 2018-19: four in La Liga and one in the Champions League at CSKA Moscow. Conte is the man who will be expected to lead a turnaround at the Bernabeu, after the Italian left Chelsea following the 2017-18 season.

Madrid contacted Conte following Sunday's Clasico defeat, and the 49-year-old is understood to be receptive to the idea of taking over in the Spanish capital.Conte was also contacted in the summer, but swatted away interest at the time with his contract situation at Chelsea still not sorted. But it appears that the Italian is ready to commit to Madrid, with Conte expected in the Spanish capital on Monday.
