'It looks like you can't touch them' - Neville backs Guardiola's Man City to go down as Premier League greats

Pep Guardiola's insatiable hunger for success and meticulous attention to detail will see Manchester City retain the title, according to Gary Neville. The Citizens are top of the Premier League after 13 matches of the 2018-19 campaign and remain unbeaten, two points ahead of second-placed Liverpool.

A comfortable 4-0 win at the Olympic Stadium against West Ham on Saturday saw Guardiola's men extend their winning run to eight matches across all competitions, with a trip to Lyon in the Champions League up next on Tuesday.

Neville has been in awe of what he has seen from City and under the Spaniard's guidance the ex-Man United full-back is adamant that their high levels of performance won't drop."Pep doesn't measure a game of football in the same way we do," Neville told Sky Sports on Monday.

“4-0, you're patting yourselves on the back in the dressing room after the game, but he sets a standard which is different to everyone else's."Sometimes I think he also wants to send a message to his players that when he sees a little complacency or things that aren't right, he'll stamp on it.

“He won't allow a drop in standard in any way and it's been apparent this season that when they've won a league, there's been a big dip."Every single day until the end of the season, he will make sure that little bit of complacency doesn't creep in at any moment in any game."

City will return to Premier League duties on Saturday when they host Bournemouth, with games against Watford and Chelsea to follow the week after as the Premier League's winter fixture list begins to pile up.

Neville added that he believes the champions will overcome any hurdles put in front of them, as they bid to become one of the greatest sides in English football history.

"Back-to-back championships is what he's desperate for and what he needs, and what he thinks is right for teams he manages," He continued."He knows that will take them from a great achievement last season to a great side. That's what they're looking like at this moment in time.

"He knows there are tougher tests to come where, if they do drop, they will get punished. But at the moment they look unbreakable. It looks like you can't touch them.”

:love:'Lindelof guts and determination shows Man United still have desire' – Hodgson

Victor Lindelof's decision to continue playing despite being visibly injured during Manchester United's 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace proves Jose Mourinho's team is playing with desire, according to Roy Hodgson.

United produced another tepid display at Old Trafford on Saturday and were arguably fortunate to take a point against a Palace side who had lost their previous three games across all competitions. The result leaves United trailing pacesetters Manchester City by 14 points after just 13 matches in an underwhelming start to the campaign.

United's form has seen fans, pundits and even Mourinho question the team's motivation, but Hodgson pinpointed Lindelof as proof to the contrary, battling on with a knock after the hosts had made all three substitutions.

Late in the game, the Sweden centre-back – who was noticeably limping due to injury – kept pace with Wilfried Zaha, before then nonchalantly dribbling out of defence, and Hodgson applauded him.

"If anyone doubts anything about Manchester United and commitment and desire, to see Lindelof, who had obviously injured himself, actually keeping pace with Zaha and [Jordan] Ayew, that would tell you more," Hodgson told reporters. "If I was a Man United man, that would be one of the most impressive things that happened in the game as far as I'm concerned.

"It would give me a lot of satisfaction knowing that, not only are there good players here who can cause so many problems for opponents, you've even got that level of spirit and determination and guts when it comes down to it.

"He could quite easily have used the injury as an excuse, and Wilf and Jordan, who are very quick, could have gone past him and maybe even won the game."

Mourinho must now dust his players down quickly ahead of a crucial Champions League encounter against Young Boys on Tuesday, before an away trip to Southampton in the Premier League four days later.

Giggs urges Man Utd not to sack Mourinho: It won't change anything!

Ryan Giggs believes Jose Mourinho can turn things around at Manchester United, insisting that sacking him would not change the club's fortunes.A 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford at the weekend has left United seventh in the Premier League table, 14 points behind leaders Manchester City and seven behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

United have endured a frustratingly inconsistent season, losing four and drawing three of their opening 13 games, and there have been suggestions that the club should potentially look to change the man in the dugout.

Wales boss Giggs, however, believes that there is no need to seek an alternative and has backed Mourinho to recover the situation."I don't see why changing the manager at this stage will change anything," Giggs told Sky Sports News.

"Everyone knows what a successful manager he's been over the years. I believe that bit of stability we've not had over the years - we need to stick with him."But results also need to change. I think we've got the manager, the players to do that."

United are currently lagging behind rivals City and Liverpool, with both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp yet to have been beaten in the league thus far this season.

And Giggs insists that consistency must be found if the club are to climb the table.
"Manchester City and Liverpool, the teams up there, they are consistent," he added. "When you're not the gap is obviously going to be big.

"When your nearest rivals are that far ahead of you it's hard to take. It's still 13 games into the season, time to claw it back."But the only way of doing that is going on a run of seven or eight games unbeaten - small steps to build that confidence back up."

United face Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday before returning to Premier League matters and a trip to Southampton on Saturday.

sacking him right now would be a bad idea. but I won't watch man u next season if Mourinho remained at the helm

:love:Manchester United 1 Young Boys 0: Fellaini drags dour Red Devils into knockouts

    6720578-0-image-a-15_1543359315266.jpg

Manchester United secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League as Marouane Fellaini sealed a 1-0 win over Young Boys with a dramatic goal in stoppage time.

Jose Mourinho's side had laboured throughout the game against the Swiss champions at Old Trafford and looked set for a second consecutive goalless draw at home until Fellaini's smart finish.Indeed, it could have been worse for United had David de Gea not produced a stunning reaction save to keep out a deflected effort from substitute Ulisses Garcia in the second half.

The result, coupled with Valencia's 1-0 defeat to Juventus, means the Red Devils join the Italians in booking a spot in the knockout phase with one group game to spare.
Mourinho had threatened to make changes to the team that drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace and followed through, with Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku benched and Alexis Sanchez left out of the squad.Marcus Rashford led the attack and spurned four decent first-half opportunities with poor finishes, the worst of which saw him lifting the ball over goalkeeper and crossbar when put through one on one by Jesse Lingard.

Fellaini blazed over after some poor goalkeeping from David Von Ballmoos early in the second half, but United were otherwise looking toothless in the final third, as they surpassed their club record of 231 minutes without a goal at home in the competition, set back in 1996-97.

Mourinho introduced Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba from the bench and the latter set up Rashford for another half-chance the striker sliced wide, before De Gea somehow clawed the ball off his line after Garcia's shot went through a crowded box.

United fans were already heading for the exits when Fellaini at last gave them something to cheer, collecting Lukaku's flick-on and firing across goal and into the bottom-left corner from 12 yards one minute into added time.

Lyon 2 Manchester City 2: Aguero late show secures progression

    6717702-6435247-image-a-71_1543355145618.jpg

Sergio Aguero's late equaliser ensured Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League last 16 with a frantic 2-2 draw at Lyon on Tuesday.

Maxwel Cornet's double looked to have put Lyon in pole position in Group F heading into the final matchweek, with Aymeric Laporte having cancelled out the winger's 55th-minute opener. But just two minutes after Cornet's second, City responded again – Aguero rising highest to head home from a corner and punish the hosts for some wasteful first-half finishing.

And thanks to Shakhtar Donetsk scoring a late winner against Hoffenheim, Lyon's battling performance did not prove enough to secure progression just yet, with a draw still required from their final group fixture in Ukraine next month.

Cornet was heavily involved from the off, missing the target with a close-range header before turning provider for Memphis Depay, who failed to connect with what should have been a simple finish.

Lyon's dominance continued, Cornet squandering another golden chance when he sliced over from six yards with the goal gaping before hitting the crossbar with a spectacular volley.Cornet would not be denied again, though, picking out the top-left corner with a curling strike from the edge of the box 10 minutes into the second half.

Lyon's lead was short-lived, the impressive Laporte on hand to head home from David Silva's flick seven minutes later, only for Cornet's low finish under Ederson to put the hosts back ahead nine minutes from time.

But it was Aguero who had the final say when he met Riyad Mahrez's corner, directing a wonderful header into the bottom-left corner to secure a share of the spoils.

Juventus 1 Valencia 0: Mandzukic the match-winner as hosts reach last 16

    wire-6720608-1543359169-856_634x507.jpg

Mario Mandzukic's 59th-minute winner earned Juventus a 1-0 victory over Valencia that ensured they booked their place in the knockout rounds.

The Bianconeri were stunned by Manchester United in Turin during their last group game but sealed their place in the last 16 with one game to spare on Tuesday, with Group H top spot now up for grabs on matchday six.In a game of few chances, Mandzukic scored a tap-in in the second half after Cristiano Ronaldo had worked space to steer a cross to the Croatian striker.

United's last-gasp win over Young Boys means Valencia are out, with no way of reaching the last 16 even if they beat Mourinho's side at home in their final group game.
Juventus had been awarded two penalties in the reverse fixture with Valencia but Miralem Pjanic, the scorer of both of those spot-kicks, was denied another in the first half when he claimed he was pulled back by Geoffrey Kondogbia. The Bianconeri dominated possession but struggled to conjure up chances and Joao Cancelo's outside-of-the-foot effort that went wide was as close as they came to a first-half goal.

It was Valencia who almost took the lead on the stroke of half-time, but Wojciech Sczcesny's brilliant one-hand save repelled Mouctar Diakhaby's header from a corner.Juventus continued to look short of ideas until Ronaldo's moment of magic just before the hour mark.

The Portugal forward's stepover fooled Gabriel and gave him enough space to steer across a ball that Mandzukic turned home from close range.Valencia thought they had hit straight back when Diakhaby got a touch to Dani Parejo's near-post free-kick.

However, the ball had clearly struck the defender's outstretched arm and rather than being credited with an equaliser, Diakhaby was punished with a yellow card from referee Willie Collum.

Neto denied Paulo Dybala, Ronaldo and Mandzukic a second Juve goal, but Valencia never looked like getting an equaliser at the other end as they exited the competition.

Roma 0 Real Madrid 2: Holders secure top spot in Group G

    6717468-6435229-image-a-42_1543354825306.jpg

Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez earned Real Madrid a 2-0 win away to Roma that guarantees the Champions League holders first place in Group G.

Both teams had already qualified thanks to a draw between CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen earlier in the day, but top spot - and potentially an easier draw in the first knockout round - was up for grabs.Cengiz Under produced a contender for the worst miss of the season late in Tuesday's first half, the Roma forward blasting a dreadful effort over the crossbar from close range.

Bale's third Champions League goal of the season nudged Madrid in front in an engrossing contest at the Stadio Olimpico, profiting on an error from Federico Fazio, with Vazquez then tapping in the decisive second.
The 1-1 draw in Moscow meant both sides were assured of progress, with the game enjoying a high-tempo start as a result.Luka Modric's shot was blocked and Raphael Varane made a last-ditch clearance to keep Madrid level, while a ferocious Aleksandar Kolarov long-range drive flew just wide of the post.

Under should have put Roma ahead just before the break but he somehow planted his finish from Nicolo Zaniolo's low cross well over the crossbar from inside the six-yard box.And that dreadful miss was punished 61 seconds into the second half by Bale.

Fazio's backpass was sliced high by Robin Olsen, with the defender's attempted header back to the goalkeeper seized upon by the Wales star, who drilled into the bottom-left corner.

Bale should have added a second moments later after racing through but he fired straight at Olsen, but Vazquez's first goal since March wrapped up the points for Madrid.

A fine team move from Santiago Solari's side ended with Karim Benzema nodding the ball into the path of Vazquez for a simple finish, with Olsen making a string of saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

AEK Athens 0 Ajax 2: Tadic sends Dutch side through after pre-match violence

Ajax booked their place in the Champions League knockout rounds with a 2-0 win at 10-man AEK Athens in a match that was marred by violent clashes in the stands.Alarming images emerged before kick-off of individuals throwing flares and petrol bombs at the visiting Dutch fans, although no injuries have yet been reported.

The Eredivisie side knew victory would secure their progression from Group E and they sealed the deal thanks to Dusan Tadic's second-half double, the first a spot-kick that saw Marko Livaja receive a second yellow for handball.

Erik ten Hag's men could yet snatch top spot after temporarily edging a point ahead of Bayern Munich, who are in action against Benfica later on Tuesday and still have to travel to Amsterdam in the final round of fixtures.

Initial events on the pitch were less dramatic than those off it with the lone chance of an uneventful opening 30 minutes falling to David Neres, but the winger's header from Frenkie de Jong's dinked pass was tame.

Lasse Schone next dipped a free-kick marginally over the crossbar, while Ezequiel Ponce's poor touch scuppered a rare AEK opening late in the first half.

Though largely outplayed, the hosts continued untroubled until Livaja - who had been booked for a foul 15 minutes earlier - was adjudged to have handled Schone's free-kick in the 68th minute.

The attacker was given his marching orders and Tadic broke the deadlock from the spot, before the former Southampton winger wrapped up a serene result by tucking away substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's unselfish lay-off 18 minutes from the end.

Petrol bomb thrown at Ajax fans amid chaotic scenes in Athens

Ajax supporters have been caught up in chaotic scenes during a Champions League clash with AEK Athens, with a petrol bomb thrown into the away end.The Eredivisie giants were in the Greek capital on Tuesday for the latest round of fixtures in Group E.Before a ball had even been kicked, tempers boiled over off the field as the home support set their sights on the visitors.

A Molotov cocktail, plastic bottles and various other objects were aimed in the direction of those to have made the trip from Amsterdam.

No arrests or injuries were reported at the time, with the local police quickly onto the scene. Those responsible for the missiles were dispersed, but Ajax followers were understandably left angered by the events which had unfolded. As a result, they ended up clashing with baton-wielding enforcement officers.

Police had also faced trouble from a number of Greek supporters in central Athens earlier in the day, and on Monday evening.

Petrol bombs were also used during those disturbances, with traffic blocked before order was restored. As chaos erupted inside the stadium on Tuesday, Ajax defender Matthijs de Light was among those to try and act as peacemaker.

He approached the away end as fans tangled with police and called for calm from those involved. The Netherlands international has emerged as a talismanic presence at Ajax, with the likes of Barcelona and Manchester City currently being linked with big-money moves for his services.

For now, his focus is locked on trying to steer his current employers into the last 16 of the Champions League.
