Lukaku set to miss Solskjaer's first game in charge of Man Utd against Cardiff

Romelu Lukaku is set to miss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first game in charge of Manchester United against Cardiff City on Saturday.

The former United striker was asked about the Belgian's availability at his first press conference and revealed that the former Everton forward is likely to be missing. When asked about the 25-year-old's availability, Solskjaer told reporters: "Lukaku has had a couple of days off, I’ve not seen him yet and I’ve not seen Alexis because he’s on his way back as well.

"I’m looking forward to seeing them."Reports have claimed that Lukaku's absence is due to compassionate leave and that the striker will also miss the visit of Huddersfield Town on Boxing Day.

The news of Lukaku's absence is an early blow for Solskjaer, who will now likely turn to either Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial to start in attack against Cardiff.

The Norwegian also explained that his first-team selection would be heavily influenced by coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna as he gets to know his squad, and asserted that every player would be given an opportunity ahead of the hectic festive period."Of course, it's Michael [Carrick] and Kieran [McKenna] who have been here for the whole season.

"They've had their say and input, but there are so many games in the next 10, 15 days, so it's about picking a team that you think is going to get results."We need results but, then again, every player needs to know that they're probably going to get their chance in this period, because that's just the nature of the game over here in England, that we have to rotate.

"Kieran and Michael have been great, I have to say. It's great being back home and seeing the development already, because I played with Michael, how good a coach and man-manager he is already, so it's been really helpful."The job now is to get to know the players, observe them, see the qualities that we've got.

"Of course, I've seen more or less every game from Norway when I've had time from the other job [as Molde boss]. But, to get to know the players and think about what I can do to improve them, that's my job."

The trip to Cardiff on Saturday will hold further significance for Solskjaer as it is the first time he has faced the club he previously managed, with the Norwegian in charge when the Bluebirds were relegated in 2013-14.

United are currently sixth in the Premier League table, a massive 19 points behind leaders Liverpool and will be desperate to get the Solskjaer era off to a positive start in Wales.

    Good lukaku is useless

Arsenal 3 Burnley 1: Aubameyang bags brace as Emery's men bounce back

    7734572-0-image-a-4_1545492109320.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang re-established himself as the Premier League's top goalscorer this season ahead of Mohamed Salah by netting a brace as Arsenal bounced back from consecutive defeats with a 3-1 win over Burnley.

Salah's strike against Wolves on Friday left Aubameyang second among the division's top marksmen, but the Gabon international was clinical in either half of a game that saw Arsenal bury the memory of their 3-2 loss at Southampton and 2-0 League Cup reverse against Tottenham.Alex Iwobi added a third for the hosts in stoppage time when he beat the Burnley offside trap.

After Burnley's Ashley Westwood squandered an early chance, Aubameyang pounced after 14 minutes to give Arsenal the lead, guiding the ball into the bottom corner of Joe Hart's net with the outside of his right foot from 12 yards after fine work from Ozil, who captained the side, and a first-time cross by Sead Kolasinac.

Emery was forced to replace Nacho Monreal with Stephan Lichtsteiner after 36 minutes, the Spaniard joining an already lengthy list of Arsenal defenders carrying knocks, but at that point Burnley were struggling to make any impact in the final third despite enjoying spells of possession.

The Clarets, though, did start the second half brightly, but Arsenal caught them with a fast break that saw Kolasinac fly down the left wing before switching the play via Alexandre Lacazette to Aubameyang, who drove the ball high into the net from 10 yards, beating Hart for power.

While Arsenal were by far the better side going forward, they were regularly pinned back by a Burnley side who forced what turned out to be a consolation when the ball bounced out of a crowd of players for Barnes to fire home from the edge of the six-yard box.

The visitors were pushing for an equaliser when Iwobi burst over the halfway line and worked with Ozil to pull the Burnley defence apart before scoring with an angled drive in the 91st minute to make sure of the victory.

AC Milan 0 Fiorentina 1: Chiesa heaps more misery on Milan

Federico Chiesa's strike 17 minutes from time earned Fiorentina their first away win of the season as AC Milan's recent struggles continued in a 1-0 loss at San Siro.

The visitors barely threatened Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal but Chiesa jinked past Davide Calabria and fired home his first goal since September to settle the contest.
The Rossoneri have now won just one of their previous six contests in Serie A and have failed to score in any of their last three.

Milan also dropped out of the top four thanks to Lazio's win earlier in the day, with Fiorentina now just two points behind them in seventh.
Milan entered this contest on the back of two 0-0 draws in Serie A and failed to find a way through in the opening 45 minutes, despite creating plenty of opportunities.Hakan Calhanoglu spurned one of the best, firing wide in the 18th minute after a stroke of fortune saw the ball ricochet back into his path in the box following an attempted give and go with Suso.

Fiorentina goalkeeper Alban Lafont brilliantly parried away a viciously struck effort from Ricardo Rodriguez while Calhanoglu was denied by Nikola Milenkovic's clearance off the line on the stroke of half-time.

It took until the 51st minute for Fiorentina to fashion their first decent opening as Kevin Mirallas hooked way over from inside the box.Lafont was kept busy at the other end, though, denying Suso at his near post and then preventing Gonzalo Higuain's header from creeping past him.

With just over 20 minutes to go Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso threw on Diego Laxalt and Patrick Cutrone in a bid to inject some life into his below-par outfit but it was Fiorentina that would claim the winner.

Chiesa knocked the ball inside Calabria and his right-footed attempt crashed into the corner. Lafont then tipped Rodriguez's header over as Milan fell to their fourth league loss of the season.

Manchester City 2 Crystal Palace 3: Townsend wonderstrike stuns Guardiola's men

    7734940-6522953-image-a-26_1545493443291.jpg

Andros Townsend scored a sensational goal-of-the-season contender as Crystal Palace dealt Manchester City's Premier League title defence a body blow with a stunning 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium.

City enjoyed a regal dominance up until Ilkay Gundogan's 26th-minute opener but Jeffrey Schlupp levelled six minutes later before Townsend turned the contest on its head with an outstanding long-range volley.

Luka Milivojevic increased City's misery and delight at Anfield with a 51st-minute penalty that means Liverpool will celebrate Christmas with a four-point lead at the Premier League summit.

Kevin De Bruyne's overhit cross sailed in five minutes from time but Pep Guardiola's side were unable to undo the damage in the late rally that followed.Gundogan was involved alongside Bernardo Silva in carving through Palace for Leroy Sane to shoot wastefully into the side-netting in the 10th minute.

The Germany midfielder showed his countryman how it was done when he eased into the box to head home Fabian Delph's searching cross.Schlupp allowed Gundogan to run off him for the opener but more than atoned by shifting outside a tired Kyle Walker challenge and arrowing a strike into the bottom right corner.

If that finish was impressive, Townsend’s remarkable goal 10 minutes before half-time was something else altogether as he put his left foot sweetly through an audacious volley, leaving Ederson with no chance.

Pep Guardiola introduced City's record goalscorer Sergio Aguero for centre-back Nicolas Otamendi early in the second half but the reshuffle led to confused defending as Townsend headed Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross against the post.

Walker made a dreadfully rash challenge as Max Meyer sought to retrieve the rebound to concede a penalty and Milivojevic, who had a penalty saved by Ederson in a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park last season, made no mistake.City's response was disjointed before Sane cracked the outside of the right post with a 77th-minute free-kick.

De Bruyne's freak goal then set nerves jangling and Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus spurned free-headed chances for Palace to hold on.

Chelsea 0 Leicester City 1: Vardy ends Foxes' 18-year wait for Stamford Bridge win

    7736432-6522905-The_Leicester_players_looked_jubilant_as_they_celebrated_Vardy_s-m-72_1545497127341.jpg

Jamie Vardy scored on his 250th Leicester City appearance as the Foxes ended an 18-year wait for a Premier League win at Chelsea in a 1-0 triumph. The former England striker had been starved of service until clinically finishing a brilliant Leicester counter early in the second half, which ultimately proved enough to clinch a first win at Stamford Bridge since 2000.

It was a hugely frustrating afternoon for Maurizio Sarri's side, who controlled large periods of the game and saw Eden Hazard - one shy of 100 competitive goals for the Blues - hit the crossbar in the first half as well as Marcos Alonso strike the post in the 91st minute when clean through.

Chelsea, who lost a league match at home for the first time under Sarri, consequently head into Christmas 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, while rumours that Leicester were planning on sacking Claude Puel may subside after this much-needed win.The Blues' play was sharp if lacking in incisiveness early doors, although David Luiz was desperately close to meeting Pedro's flick on from a Willian corner.

Leicester had an almighty let-off when Hazard pounced on Harry Maguire's poor control and rifled an effort against the crossbar.Neither team had a shot on target until the 41st minute with Kepa Arrizabalaga's strong hand keeping out Wilfred Ndidi's stinging 30-yard drive.

Willian tamely struck at Kasper Schmeichel after a fine team move, while Jorginho's well-hit half-volley forced the Leicester keeper into action again as Chelsea finished the half strong. The Blues were caught cold six minutes after the break, though. Leicester launched a counter-attack that led to James Maddison slipping in Vardy to emphatically fire past Kepa when one-on-one.

Schmeichel was sharp to keep out Hazard's left-foot effort from a tight angle, and at the other end Kepa's spill from Marc Albrighton's cross needed swift action from Cesar Azpilicueta to deny Vardy.

Leicester's goal lived a charmed life in the closing stages with Antonio Rudiger heading wide from point-blank range and Alonso fluffing his lines by striking the left post when one-on-one.

Huddersfield Town 1 Southampton 3: Saints surge away from danger

Ralph Hasenhuttl's resuscitation of Southampton gathered momentum as they climbed three points clear of the Premier League drop zone with a 3-1 win at Huddersfield Town.

The Saints led from the 15th minute through Nathan Redmond and navigated a nervy spell in the second half to deservedly prevail in a match with clear relegation implications.

Danny Ings, twice on target in last weekend's 3-2 victory over Arsenal, converted his side's second from the spot before half-time and it proved a decisive buffer.

Philip Billing's bamboozling of Alex McCarthy briefly offered the Terriers a lifeline in the 58th minute but, as is often the case, they failed to build on a positive period and were consigned to a fifth straight Premier League loss when teenager Michael Obafemi buried his first professional goal. The confidence Southampton gained from overcoming Arsenal was evident in Redmond's emphatic finish for the opener, the winger punishing Terence Kongolo's ungainly attempt at cutting out Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's pass.

Huddersfield were struggling to exert any kind of attacking threat and another defensive blunder cost them three minutes before the break.Mathias Jorgensen miscontrolled Ings' wayward pass and compounded his error by tripping the Saints striker, who coolly sent Jonas Lossl the wrong way from the spot.

McCarthy made an instinctive save from Jorgensen's close-range header soon after the interval but the goalkeeper was far less impressive in allowing Billing's swerving shot to beat him. That instigated a period of Huddersfield pressure that was relieved through a third mistake at the back.

Christopher Schindler was all too easily robbed of possession, Redmond selflessly squared and substitute Obafemi was on hand to tuck away a landmark goal, leaving the hapless hosts four points from safety.

Atletico Madrid 1 Espanyol 0: Griezmann's 200th career goal moves hosts back up to second

    7748580-6524021-image-a-60_1545527842759.jpg

Antoine Griezmann's penalty was enough as Atletico Madrid moved up to second in LaLiga after claiming an unremarkable 1-0 win over Espanyol, as the Frenchman reached 200 career goals for club and country.

Espanyol produced a fine performance given their wretched form, but Atletico just about managed to earn the victory which moves them back above Sevilla at least until Sunday thanks to Griezmann. The visitors looked considerably more threatening in the first half, with Jan Oblak having to be at his best to deny Borja Iglesias and one-time Atletico striker Leo Baptistao.

But Espanyol's attacking threat fizzled out somewhat after the break and Atletico made the most of that, with Griezmann's penalty proving decisive and inflicting a sixth successive league defeat on Espanyol, their worst run since 2003.
Espanyol looked the more creative of the two sides early on and went close twice in the first 15 minutes, as Esteban Granero sent a chip just wide of the top-left corner, before Oblak had to be alert to tip a similar effort from Iglesias over.

Oblak made another vital stop in the 28th minute when parrying Baptistao's fierce 20-yard volley, though he had to rely on his left-hand post to stop the Brazilian's follow-up effort.Atletico finally tested Diego Lopez just before the break – the former Real Madrid goalkeeper pushing a Griezmann volley wide.

The hosts looked more solid defensively after the interval and then found themselves ahead in the 56th minute, as Griezmann emphatically slammed a penalty into the roof of the net as a consequence of Koke being felled by a wild Granero kick.

Atletico should have rounded things off when Gelson Martins was tackled in the penalty area on the counter, though it had no impact on the score as the hosts held on at the other end.

Real Madrid 4 Al Ain 1: Modric caps golden 2018 by delivering Solari's first trophy

    7738714-6523219-image-a-17_1545501745153.jpg

Luka Modric's wonderful goal helped seal Club World Cup history as Real Madrid beat Al Ain 4-1 to become the first team to win the tournament three years in a row.

Santiago Solari's first silverware since being appointed as Julen Lopetegui's successor was set up by Modric's first-half strike as Madrid comfortably triumphed in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, moving past rivals Barcelona with their fourth title in the competition.

The Croatia midfielder, who added the Ballon d'Or crown to his World Cup Golden Ball this month, bent the opener into the bottom-left corner from 25 yards, with Marcos Llorente also drilling home from outside the box before a Sergio Ramos header extended Madrid's lead.

Al Ain had a goal from Caio Fernandes ruled out for offside when they only trailed by one and Zoran Mamic's side - who replied through an excellent Tsukasa Shiotani header - can be proud of their efforts on home soil as massive underdogs against the European champions, despite Madrid adding a late fourth through Yahia Nader's own goal.
Madrid hit the post in the third minute when Llorente got clear in the left channel, his cutback deflected on to the woodwork by fortunate defender Ismail Ahmed.

Al Ain should have taken the lead when Marcelo's mistake let in Hussein El Shahat but captain Ramos made a miraculous goal-line clearance to deny the winger, then Madrid nudged in front.Neat build-up play from Karim Benzema set up Modric and the Ballon d'Or winner curled home a beauty from 25 yards, Caio then seeing a rapid reply ruled out for offside.

Benzema missed a brilliant chance to extend Madrid's lead before goalkeeper Khalid Eisa made outstanding saves to deny both Gareth Bale and Modric before the break.Madrid effectively clinched the trophy in the 60th minute when a cleared corner fell kindly to Llorente, his thumping half-volley giving Eisa no chance and opening his professional account in some style.

Ramos powered home a Modric corner to make certain of Madrid's victory, celebrating the goal with unused substitute Isco, although Al Ain scored a deserved consolation through Shiotani with four minutes left.

Madrid had the final say, though, as a cross from substitute Vinicius Jr was turned into his own goal by Nader in the first minute of stoppage time.
