:love:Tottenham 0 Manchester United 1: De Gea the star as Solskjaer passes first real test

    8470720-6586853-image-a-57_1547404023544.jpg

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer passed his first real test as Manchester United caretaker manager as his side beat high-flying Tottenham 1-0 at Wembley on Sunday, with David de Gea playing a huge part.

Up against Mauricio Pochettino, the favourite to replace Jose Mourinho on a full-time basis at Old Trafford, Solskjaer's team played vibrant football and just about did enough in a match of many chances, with De Gea's display just as important as Marcus Rashford's third goal in as many games.

United were a particular danger on the counter and it was no surprise to see them ultimately go ahead at the end of such of a move, with Rashford finishing after Paul Pogba's excellent pass.

An open second half saw both teams create a raft of chances, but Hugo Lloris and the exceptional De Gea came out on top, with United moving level on 41 points with fifth-placed Arsenal as a result.

After a bright Spurs opening, United looked a threat on the break and went close twice before the 20th minute – Jesse Lingard firing wide of the top-right corner from 12 yards, before Anthony Martial tested Lloris from a tight angle.

Spurs lost Moussa Sissoko to a suspected groin injury after 43 minutes, and United broke the deadlock a few moments later – Pogba's exquisite long ball releasing Rashford, who found the bottom-left corner from 18 yards.Pochettino's side looked re-energised at the start of the second half, with De Gea making crucial saves from Kane and Dele Alli within five minutes of the restart.

Still United threatened, however, with Pogba seeing a close-range effort tipped over by Lloris, before his controlled effort just inside the box in the 62nd minute forced a smart stop from the France goalkeeper.

De Gea was the star, though, producing a string of saves to keep Kane, Alli and Toby Alderweireld at bay and ensuring Solskjaer equalled Matt Busby's record of winning his first five league games in charge of United.

Inter 6 Benevento 2: Spalletti's men book Lazio quarter-final date

    1aOb1vx.jpg

Inter set up a Coppa Italia quarter-final showdown with Lazio by beating second-tier Benevento 6-2 at a nearly empty San Siro on Sunday.

The seven-time winners, forced to play the tie behind closed doors after racial abuse was aimed at Kalidou Koulibaly in last month's meeting with Napoli, were two up early on through Mauro Icardi's penalty and Antonio Candreva's measured strike.Luciano Spalletti's side put the game to bed on the stroke of half-time courtesy of Dalbert's powerful finish, with Lautaro Martinez adding the fourth after the interval.

Benevento deservedly reduced the deficit when Roberto Insigne steered home a precise free-kick, only for Martinez to net again before Filippo Bandinelli's goal brought the game's tally to seven. And there was time for one more, perhaps the pick of the bunch, as Candreva netted at the end of a fine solo run.

If the visitors had plans to keep it tight in the opening exchanges, they were foiled inside three minutes. Luca Antei fouled Candreva in the area and Icardi confidently converted from the spot.Benevento should have been level soon after, but Andres Tello side-footed straight at Daniele Padelli from eight yards out.

And the underdogs, who lost twice against Inter en route to relegation last season, were made to pay when Candreva drilled home after Icardi's header had bounced back off the post.

With Inter boasting an unbeaten home run stretching back to September, a route back into the match seemed unlikely for Benevento, who nonetheless applied themselves willingly as Insigne forced a smart stop from Padelli. But their already dwindling hopes practically vanished when Dalbert raced onto the end of the impressive Ivan Perisic's pass to lash beyond Lorenzo Montipo for his first Inter goal.

The rout continued when Martinez nodded in Perisic's cross three minutes after the restart, but Benevento finally got off the mark themselves as Insigne converted a fine set-piece from 20 yards.

Another Perisic assist allowed Martinez to double his tally as Montipo was beaten for a fifth time from six shots on target, with Sassuolo loanee Bandinelli's header from Riccardo Improta's cross preceding Candreva's excellent last-gasp goal.

Cavani: Solskjaer has brought a change of energy to Manchester United

Edinson Cavani acknowledged that Manchester United's appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought "a change of energy" to the club ahead of a Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United parted ways with Jose Mourinho after a difficult start to the Premier League campaign, replacing him with the former Red Devils striker.Under Mourinho, though, Manchester United still did enough to secure advancement to the Champions League knockout stages, where they will face PSG in the round of 16.

The two sides are set to meet in Manchester on February 12 for the first leg of their clash and, speaking exclusively to Goal, Cavani says he's seen a big improvement in Man Utd under Solskjaer's leadership."Manchester, we have to think of ourselves and not the other teams," Cavani said."We have to think about what we have to do as a team, know our qualities and our faults to get to the next match ready, in the best and most fit way."

"We know that Manchester United has gone through a rather negative period, the coaching change has brought a change of energy too, different. They have started to have positive results."It creates more motivation and that's normal. But we will study them more specifically at the time of the match, not before."

While Manchester United continues to find form and chemistry under Solskjaer, Cavani has been developing his own relationship with stars Kylian Mbappe and Neymar since the two joined the Ligue 1 club.Cavani, who dismissed links connecting him with Chelsea, says that relationship continues to develop, although the three feel very comfortable playing alongside one another with PSG.

"It's all about time, work, availability wth any football player, one or more, and I think everyone reacts differently in the group," he said.

"The energy is different and I think that, with time, this connection has developed."
PSG return to against Guingamp on Saturday after battering Amiens 3-0 this past weekend behind goals from Cavani, Mbappe and Marquinhos.

Zenit demand Chelsea pay €40m for 'Fabregas replacement' Paredes

Chelsea and Zenit's valuations for Leandro Paredes are currently €10 million (£9m/$11m) apart after the Blues were asked to increase their offer for the midfielder to €40m (£36m/$46m).

Goal understands the Premier League club's initial approach for Paredes was €30m (£27m/$34m), and the closeness of the two valuations means that there could soon be a positive outcome for the Argentina international.

Paredes, who showed up to conduct medical tests on Monday with Zenit after a winter break period in the Russian Premier League, is seen by Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri as an ideal type of player to come in and deputise for Jorginho.

Sarri is keen to secure a replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who was allowed to complete a free transfer to Monaco on Friday, after a deal was initially agreed earlier in the month .

Fabregas made his debut for Monaco in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Marseille and performance-related clauses mean that Chelsea could earn £10m ($13m) over the course of his three-and-a-half year contract.Chelsea beat Newcastle 2-1 on Saturday, but Jorginho struggled to meet expectations at Stamford Bridge, which Sarri admitted after the game.

The Chelsea boss also said that he would have substituted Jorginho had Fabregas been involved and described his lack of options for the central midfield pivot as the one weakness currently in the squad.

“If Fabregas was on the bench, I think that in the second half then Fabregas would be on the pitch instead of Jorginho," Sarri said on Saturday.“In the future maybe [we can try Ethan Ampadu there], but we have to work. Playing as a central midfielder in our team is not easy, we need to try and try and try in training with him.

“The player who plays in that position usually touches the ball about 120-130 times and so I think that we need a specialist there. I think that he is able to do it.”Chelsea have other situations going on in the January transfer window, as striker Alvaro Morata could be replaced by Gonzalo Higuain but ongoing talks remain complicated.

The future of Callum Hudson-Odoi is in doubt after a £35m ($45m) offer from Bayern Munich turned the 18-year-old's head, but Chelsea's hopes of convincing the youngster to stay have led to a stalemate that could be played out over many months.

:DPogba loving Man Utd limelight after escaping 'shadows' cast by Mourinho

Paul Pogba admits he “was in the shadows” at Manchester United during Jose Mourinho’s reign, but has rediscovered the “pleasure” of playing again since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment.Despite being returned to Old Trafford by a Portuguese coach in the summer of 2016, the France international rarely saw eye-to-eye with an outspoken manager.

Struggles to find a suitable role in a supposedly defensive system led to regular questions being asked of his form and ongoing presence in the United side.

A fresh start has been awarded to the World Cup winner, though, with Mourinho relieved of his duties, and the 25-year-old is flourishing under a boss prepared to play to his strengths.

Pogba has been given greater freedom to express himself, in a Red Devils team seeking to be more attacking as a collective, and produced another match-altering moment of magic during his most recent outing against Tottenham. After delivering the defence-splitting pass which allowed Marcus Rashford to net the winner against Spurs, the all-action midfielder told reporters: “Before the coach arrived I was in the shadows, on the bench, and I accepted that.

“It is a pleasure to play again. Now I am always smiling.”The mood inside Old Trafford has been raised both on the field and in the stands since Solskjaer was appointed as Mourinho’s successor on an interim basis.

The Norwegian has overseen six successive victories in all competitions, with United now just six points back in the race for a top-four finish and still in contention for FA Cup and Champions League honours.A number of players, such as Pogba and Rashford, have rediscovered the spark which deserted them under the previous regime, with minor tweaks having made a marked difference.

Solskjaer is earning plenty of plaudits as a result, with the feel-good factor returned to the Red Devils squad by a man who knows all about the pressure and expectation of delivering under the brightest of spotlights.

“It’s a pleasure to be reunited with him,” Pogba said of a man he previously spent time working with in United’s youth system.“I knew him from the academy and the reserves, when his nickname was ‘Supersub’.

“He is doing a really good job. As a player he knew the mentality of this club. He has come back to help us and it is going very well.”
