Chelsea 5 Huddersfield Town 0: Higuain up and running in Blues cruise

    9310412-6660795-image-a-12_1549121522666.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain scored his first two goals for Chelsea as they thumped Huddersfield Town 5-0 in Saturday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge. The Argentina striker converted in each half, either side of a double from Eden Hazard, to cap an impressive home debut for the club he joined on loan from Juventus last month.

Chelsea completed the rout in the 86th minute, when David Luiz's header got the better of Jonas Lossl with a hefty deflection off Elias Kachunga.

Maurizio Sarri's side were thrashed 4-0 by Bournemouth on Wednesday, leading to a post-match dressing-room inquest led by the head coach, but they rarely looked in trouble against a Huddersfield side who are 13 points adrift of safety at the foot of the table.Higuain had come close with a half-volley before opening his Chelsea account 16 minutes in, running onto N'Golo Kante's clever pass and firing high past Lossl.

The Huddersfield goalkeeper had to parry a good strike from Cesar Azpilicueta as Chelsea began to dominate, with David Luiz wasting a great chance with a wayward header. The visitors were growing into the game when Azpilicueta went to ground under minimal contact from Kachunga, allowing Hazard to send Lossl the wrong way from the spot and make it 2-0 before the interval.

Hazard continued to cause unease for the Huddersfield defence and he eventually struck the killer third goal, gathering Ross Barkley's pass, waltzing around Lossl and finishing left-footed.Higuain made certain of both the victory and a memorable first outing at the Bridge three minutes later, sending a thumping effort off Terence Kongolo and beyond Lossl from the edge of the box after being set up by Kante.

David Luiz's header was diverted past his own keeper by Kachunga to compound a rotten outing for Huddersfield, who have earned just one league point since the start of December.

Bayer Leverkusen 3 Bayern Munich 1: Bailey, Volland and Alario down champions

    9312496-6661027-image-a-57_1549128204180.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to beat Bayern Munich 3-1 and land another damaging blow against the champions' Bundesliga title defence.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund head coach Peter Bosz did his former club a huge favour despite Leon Goretzka giving Bayern a 41st-minute lead.Leon Bailey launched a fabulous free-kick into the top-left corner before Kevin Volland and substitute Lucas Alario sealed victory for a vibrant Leverkusen, who move up to seventh in the table.

Instead of being punished for their 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt, Dortmund's lead over Bayern at the summit edges up to seven points.Mats Hummels survived an early penalty shout for handball when he blocked Volland's shot at close quarters.

Leverkusen centre-back Sven Bender required treatment after a pair of brave challenges to deny Robert Lewandowski, but his team fell behind shortly before the interval.Kingsley Coman made the most of the hosts' high line to charge in on goal. Lukas Hradecky saved but Thomas Muller sent the ball back into the box from the right for Goretzka to head home.

Lewandowski thought he had made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time, but a VAR review confirmed he was fractionally offside before stylishly converting Coman's pass.Bosz's men made the most of that let-off by restarting on the front foot and Bailey's wonderful strike brought them level after Coman tripped Volland.

Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich scampered towards the same corner to claw Julian Brandt's 60th-minute volley behind.Coman continued to lead a flagging Bayern challenge and they were clinically sliced apart as Karim Bellarabi crossed for Volland to slot past the advancing Ulreich.

James Rodriguez had a close-range header blocked but a late Bayern onslaught never truly materialised before Alario dispatched Brandt's low cross in the 87th minute.

Eintracht Frankfurt 1 Borussia Dortmund 1: Favre's men move seven clear

    wire-9314970-1549136008-32_634x480.jpg

Borussia Dortmund extended their lead at the Bundesliga summit despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt.Lucien Favre's side were made to work hard for a share of the spoils, which proved a point gained in light of Bayern Munich's loss at Bayer Leverkusen.

Marco Reus and Luka Jovic – two players battling it out to be the division's top scorer – exchanged first-half goals at the Commerzbank-Arena, but Frankfurt's Ante Rebic was particularly profligate.

Dortmund now boast a seven-point advantage at the top of the table.
Having survived some early pressure, Dortmund almost forged ahead when Paco Alcacer got on the end of Jadon Sancho's cross, but Makoto Hasebe made a timely intervention. The breakthrough arrived after 22 minutes, Reus applying the simplest of finishes after a determined run from Raphael Guerreiro.

Reus should have doubled his tally a couple of minutes later but he dragged his effort wide when he had only Kevin Trapp to beat, with the Germany forward then striking the crossbar.

The hosts stuck to their task and Rebic saw two chances go begging in quick succession, first volleying wide and then failing to find a way past Roman Burki from a tight angle. Dortmund failed to heed the warning signings, though, and Jovic levelled from Danny da Costa's delivery just after Rebic had headed onto the bar.

Burki was at full stretch to keep out Rebic's powerful effort after the interval and Achraf Hakimi saw a speculative long-range drive fly over the top.Ultimately neither side could find a second goal as Dortmund strengthened their position in the title race despite dropping points.

Tottenham 1 Newcastle United 0: Dubravka's late howler sends Spurs second

    9309564-6660477-image-m-101_1549118936295.jpg

Tottenham moved up to second in the Premier League after Martin Dubravka let Son Heung-min's 83rd-minute shot squirm under his body to gift Mauricio Pochettino's men a 1-0 win over Newcastle United. After coming from behind to beat Watford in midweek, Spurs dominated their visitors for lengthy spells at Wembley but lacked a killer instinct in the absence of injured duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

Lucas Moura started in Kane's normal position but posed scant threat to a packed Newcastle defence, while at the other end Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez were a nuisance throughout.

Just as Newcastle looked set to extend their unbeaten Premier League run to three matches, Son's shot from the edge of the box squirmed under Dubravka and secured a win that keeps Spurs' faint title hopes alive.Lucas should have given the hosts an early lead when he powered a free header harmlessly wide before Erik Lamela crashed a better effort onto the crossbar as Spurs began to turn the screw.

Newcastle's first chances came after the half-hour mark when Perez's shot rebounded to Rondon just outside the six-yard box, but the Venezuelan hesitated and his shot was crowded out.

Moussa Sissoko deftly met a high, looping cross with a side-footed volley that deserved a goal only for Dubravka to get down well to parry it away seven minutes before half-time.Davinson Sanchez sent a header narrowly wide of Dubravka's net early in the second half and moments later Rondon went even closer at the other end, beating Toby Alderweireld in the air and hitting the post with his try.

Fabian Schar hooked off the line when Christian Eriksen thought he had flicked the ball into the net from close range, but Newcastle were eventually breached.Son's low drive looked to be heading straight into Dubravka's arms yet it wriggled underneath his dive and found the net.

'Cheer for Arsenal? Never!' - Pochettino not expecting favour from rivals against Man City

Mauricio Pochettino insists he will not be cheering on Arsenal when Tottenham's bitter rivals travel to Manchester City on Sunday.Heung-min Son's late winner against Newcastle United lifted Spurs above reigning champions City and into second place in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola's men will regain that position if they are able to beat the Gunners at the Etihad Stadium and close to within two points of leaders Liverpool, who face West Ham on Monday.

Asked after the 1-0 triumph over Newcastle whether he would watch Sunday's encounter, Pochettino replied: "Yes, at home."Pushed to clarify whether he might be shouting for Tottenham's north London neighbours, the Argentine coach was in playful mood."No! Why? Never!" he said, before suggesting he hopes football will be the winner.

"No. I will watch the game and won't be on one side or another. I am going to watch the game and accept whatever the result is. I'll be happy with the result that they're going to have."City lost to Newcastle in midweek, while Liverpool were held to a home draw against Leicester City.

Spurs took the opportunity to restate their title credentials, which have arguably slipped under the radar of late on the back of Carabao Cup and FA Cup exits and another quiet transfer window."We don't need to be in some position like today to convince ourselves about our capacity, our potential or possibility to win," Pochettino added.

"We always believe in ourselves. We are there because we believe in ourselves."Then it's if we are capable to fight until the end - to be close and fight until the end, to go close to our opponent to be champions."Today, we are there because we deserve to be there. We will see what happens in the future."

:love:Leicester City 0 Manchester United 1: Rashford drags Solskjaer's men back to winning ways

    9336572-0-image-a-10_1549205556402.jpg

Marcus Rashford marked his 100th Premier League appearance with the only goal as Manchester United saw off Leicester City 1-0 on Sunday. The England striker finished clinically from Paul Pogba's pass to earn United a seventh win in eight league games under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Their winning run had been halted by Burnley on Tuesday, when the Red Devils fought back from 2-0 down to claim a dramatic 2-2 draw, but the three points rarely looked in much doubt after Rashford's 10th top-flight goal of the season.

Rashford somehow headed over from barely two yards out within the first five minutes, but he soon made amends, controlling Pogba's lofted pass expertly and drilling beyond Kasper Schmeichel.United eased off after taking the lead and invited some Leicester pressure, although a wayward header from Jonny Evans and a dipping Pereira strike were the best openings they could muster before the break.

David de Gea was given a tougher test on the hour mark, reacting well to stop Jamie Vardy's half-volley from crossing the line after he spilled the initial attempt, and Solskjaer promptly introduced Anthony Martial for the ineffective Alexis Sanchez in a bid to spark some life into his side.

De Gea was called on again to keep out Rachid Ghezzal's dipping free-kick, while Evans swiped at thin air after being teed up by Harry Maguire, but United held firm for a 17th victory in their last 21 meetings with the Foxes in all competitions.

Manchester City 3 Arsenal 1: Aguero stars as champions bounce back

    9340320-6662993-The_prolific_forward_soaked_up_the_adoration_of_the_home_crown_a-a-5_1549219323383.jpg

Hat-trick hero Sergio Aguero was quick off the mark again as Manchester City closed the gap at the top of the Premier League to two points with a 3-1 victoryover Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side had faced the prospect of falling seven points behind Liverpool after Tuesday's shock 2-1 loss at Newcastle United, but the league leaders could only manage a home draw with Leicester City the following day.

And with Jurgen Klopp's charges not in action again until Monday's trip to West Ham, City got to within touching distance of the summit as Aguero broke the deadlock after just 46 seconds.

Laurent Koscielny's leveller against the run of play reminded City of their opponents' quality, but unlike at St James' Park – when Aguero's goal after just 24 seconds came in a losing effort – the reigning champions bounced back to wrap up the points.Aguero took the match ball with two close-range finishes, the latter having hit his arm, to ramp up the pressure on the Merseysiders and keep Arsenal in sixth, three points adrift of the Champions League spots.

City started the match in third spot following Tottenham's victory over Newcastle but had won their last four home games with an aggregate score of 24-0, and another three points seemed inevitable after Aguero's early stooping header from Aymeric Laporte's cross.

Indeed ,Guardiola, who has never lost a match to Arsenal boss Unai Emery in all competitions, saw his side make a barnstorming start and Aguero had a penalty appeal waved away following contact from Shkodran Mustafi before Raheem Sterling stung the palms of Bernd Leno.

An offside flag cut short celebrations when Laporte nodded in Kevin De Bruyne's free-kick, but a seemingly beleaguered Gunners side hit back when Nacho Monreal flicked on Lucas Torreira's corner and Koscielny headed in.

Ederson had to be alert to clear from in front of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he looked to get on the end of Alexandre Lacazette's throughball, with the visitors evidently growing into the contest. But their hard work was undone a minute before the interval as Aguero tapped home from Sterling's low cross.

The hosts sought to put the game to bed in the second half and De Bruyne should have done better at the end of a swift counter-attack in which he had played a key role, but the Belgian's finish was tame.It took until after the hour mark for City to end Arsenal's hopes, Aguero getting the scruffiest of goals after the ball struck his arm as he slid in when Leno failed to collect Sterling's cross.

A late Denis Suarez debut cameo did little to lift the Gunners' gloom and City will now watch Liverpool's trip to West Ham with interest.

Inter 0 Bologna 1: Santander stuns Spalletti's side at San Siro

    wire-9342802-1549223589-227_634x429.jpg

Inter's winless run was stretched to four matches in all competitions as Sinisa Mihajlovic's struggling Bologna triumphed 1-0 at San Siro, in the process securing their first Serie A win since September. With the distraction of the transfer window out of the way, Ivan Perisic was back for the Nerazzurri but they still lacked fluency as they followed up a Coppa Italia exit on penalties to Lazio by losing at home.

Bologna - led by ex-Inter man Mihajlovic in the first match of his second stint as coach - fully deserved a half-time lead secured by Federico Santander, who threatened throughout.

And Inter's response after the break was tame, with Luciano Spalletti's team struggling to service Mauro Icardi as they made it far too easy for their determined opponents.

Icardi should have scored inside the first minute, blazing wide after a dreadful Andrea Poli back pass, but Bologna soon came into their own. Samir Handanovic was alert to parry from Riccardo Orsolini and then had to make a wonderful stop to deny the dangerous Santander.

Inter were on the ropes and they fell behind when Santander flicked a near-post header into the net from a left-wing corner for Bologna, with a dismal first half capped as Matias Vecino hacked at a clear opportunity at the other end. Lukasz Skorupski blocked bravely from Radja Nainggolan shortly after the restart, before a long throw presented an opportunity for half-time substitute Lautaro Martinez, who wastefully screwed his header wide.

Spalletti sent on Andrea Ranocchia to add size to the attack with 15 minutes remaining as Inter pushed for an equaliser, but Skorupski beat away a left-footed volley from the centre-back and Bologna held on.

Real Betis 1 Atletico Madrid 0: Canales' penalty dents Atletico's title hopes

    9339118-6663023-image-a-22_1549212933160.jpg

Atletico Madrid's LaLiga title hopes were dealt a huge blow as Sergio Canales' penalty claimed a 1-0 win for Real Betis on Sunday. With LaLiga leaders Barcelona having drawn on Saturday, Atleti knew that a victory would have taken them to within three points of Ernesto Valverde's side.

But Atleti failed to make Barca pay for their slip up, and having been denied by a spectacular stop from Jan Oblak early on, Betis struck when Canales slotted home from 12 yards out in the 65th minute following Filipe Luis' handball.

Diego Simeone will likely point to debutant Alvaro Morata having had what looked to be a clear penalty claim turned down earlier in the second half, while Antoine Griezmann hit the woodwork, but that was the most Atleti could muster as they suffered their first LaLiga defeat since September.

Atleti had Oblak to thank three minutes in, their goalkeeper lunging to his right to sensationally keep out Zouhair Feddal's header.

Oblak's save proved the highlight of a sluggish first half, but Atleti came out with renewed vigour after the interval, and were adamant they should have had a penalty in the 55th minute.Morata drew an awkward sliding challenge from Feddal in the box, only for the referee to award a corner, with VAR not used to review the incident despite Atleti's protestations.

Atleti's luck got worse 10 minutes later – substitute Filipe Luis handling in the area, with Canales making no mistake despite Oblak diving the right way.Griezmann curled a sublime strike onto the frame of the goal moments later, but Betis held firm to inflict a damaging blow to Atleti's title challenge.
