:love::love:Still unstoppable at 34 – Ronaldo is the greatest athlete in football history

If Cristiano Ronaldo were like other Ballon d'Or winners, he would have hung up his boots by now, like Marco van Basten, Michael Owen or Zinedine Zidane, perhaps after a spell in MLS, like Kaka. But Cristiano Ronaldo is not like other Ballon d’Or winners.Eleven years on from first being crowned the best player in the world, the Portugal international, who turned 34 on Tuesday, is showing no signs of slowing down.

At the end of 2019, he will once again be among the front-runners for football’s most celebrated individual prize, so impressive has his start been to life at Juventus, where record after record continues to tumble on his path towards immortality. And while the debate over who is better – he or Lionel Messi – will go on forever, no one can question that Ronaldo is the most incredible athlete ever to grace the sport.

“The Portuguese star has the physical capacity of a 20-year-old player,” AS claimed after his move to Juve from Real Madrid, citing his seven per cent body fat and muscle mass of 50%, with both figures significantly superior to those of the average footballer.

The stats ran nicely alongside quotes from his unveiling in Turin, where he said: “I'm here because it's a very big challenge in my career. At my age, players usually go to China. I'm different from everyone else, from all the players who are 32, 33 or 34 years old.”Ronaldo set about separating himself from his peers very early in his career. His dedication to being in peak, physical condition is by no means a reaction to him reaching – what most footballers would call – the latter years of his career. He has long been obsessed with his fitness.

"He was the first person I saw employing a nutritionist, a doctor, a personal physio, a chef," Rio Ferdinand, his former Manchester United team-mate, told ITV . “He invested in himself to become the best in the world."The advice from physical fitness experts complements Ronaldo's unrivalled motivation, something which Carlos Queiroz, Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant, colourfully illustrated.

“I was once in my office at Carrington and saw something moving in the trees far away,” he told the National . “Maybe it was a spy. I called security and asked him. He came back to me and said: ‘It’s Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s training alone’.He was unique.

“It was very rare to see in a young player so much talent and such a strong personality, purpose and commitment. I read about Arnold Schwarzenegger learning to dance the tango. He was obsessed to be a perfectionist. Cristiano is the same.”It’s one thing to be a talented footballer, but it’s another thing to fulfil, and even exceed, your potential.

For Ronaldo, his mental attributes arguably exceed his technical attributes, allowing him to keep up with Messi, a player certainly more naturally talented than the Portuguese. But as he has said before, the Juventus star is not concerned with how the Argentine gets on.“I don’t compete against Messi. I compete against myself,” he told Men’s Health . “I like to focus on myself. I am more concerned with my own game than I am on rivals.”

That concern takes him to great lengths."We would sometimes return from a European game, it could be three in the morning, but Ronaldo would be the player who did not go straight home,” former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti told the Daily Mirror .“Instead, he would go to the training ground for the ice bath, to help with his recovery from the game."“Another time,” Ancelotti's assistant, Paul Clement, told the Guardian , “we got back from Istanbul at 6am and the physio's giving him a rub down.”

It’s dedication at its most extreme, but it allows Ronaldo to avoid injuries and, in turn, continue to perform at the highest level. It's prompted Giorgio Chiellini to suggest his team-mate could play until he’s 40 and explains why Ronaldo is now considering doing so.

"When I renewed my [Real Madrid] contract I said I'd still be playing when I'm 41 – it was meant half jokingly and half seriously,” he told Sky Sports . “If I feel good, without any injuries and I am still motivated, I'll play until I'm 35, 41 or 45. I don't know.”Where he will be several years down the line is impossible to predict, but he remains at the level he has been for well over a decade – among the world’s best.

With 17 goals in 22 Serie A games, his form at Juventus has been astounding.Add the Champions League in there, the competition he is known for dominating, and the chances of him breaking Ferenc Hirzer’s 93-year-old club record of 35 goals scored in a singular season for the Old Lady are very high.“Ronaldo has become a truly seasoned athlete,” said Antonio Gaspar , Ronaldo’s physiotherapist. “I’ve enjoyed watching how he’s evolved.

"He’s still strong and fast and quick, he still has the technical ability to dazzle, but he plays smarter and has the experience and maturity to take better advantage of his assets.”There will always be people who believe Messi is better than Ronaldo. There will also always be people who believe he is trumped by greats from the past – such as Pele or Diego Maradona.

But like tennis has Roger Federer, football has Cristiano Ronaldo; an evergreen specimen who ages like a fine wine.

Barcelona 1 Real Madrid 1: Malcom forces first-leg draw in Copa Clasico

    9485298-6675645-image-a-51_1549488175567.jpg

Barcelona and Real Madrid played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at Camp Nou on Wednesday.Malcom's second-half goal cancelled out a sixth-minute opener from Lucas Vazquez and ensured there will be plenty to play for in the return fixture on February 27.

With Lionel Messi fit enough only for a place on the bench, the onus was on Barca to show they could cope without their talisman in the first of a difficult run of fixtures this month.

Madrid went ahead with the second shot of the match, though, Vazquez twisting his body to flick the ball beyond Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Karim Benzema's drilled cross.

Malcom, starting in the cup for the fifth time this season, scuffed a glorious chance straight at Keylor Navas but was spared somewhat by the offside flag.

The Brazilian was proving a problem down the Madrid left and it was his free-kick that Ivan Rakitic headed against the crossbar, before Vinicius Junior almost set up Benzema for a tap-in on the break.Luis Suarez saw a shot well saved by Navas after more good Malcom work, but frustrations began to build for the home side in their struggle to create clear-cut openings.

They found the equaliser 57 minutes in, however, when Sergio Ramos, having brilliantly cleared a Suarez effort off the line, allowed Malcom's strike on the rebound to fly past him and into the net, apparently convinced it was going wide.

Messi and Gareth Bale were introduced from the bench, and it was the Madrid man who missed the best chance for a winner, failing to make the most of Benzema's pass after Ter Stegen had been left stranded.

Everton 0 Manchester City 2: Champions take over at Premier League summit

    9483686-6675547-image-a-8_1549485665949.jpg

Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.City were seven points behind Liverpool on January 19 but Wednesday's win sees them move level with Jurgen Klopp's Reds, the defending champions taking over at the summit on goal difference.

Aymeric Laporte's second league goal of the season put City ahead in the final moments of the first half, Everton giving the defender the freedom of the penalty area to head past Jordan Pickford.

The visitors wasted a number of chances to extend their lead before Gabriel Jesus wrapped things up in stoppage time, condemning struggling Everton to a seventh defeat in their last 10 league matches.

Leroy Sane missed the game's first chance in the third minute and Laporte could do no better with a quarter of an hour played, the unmarked defender somehow heading wide from Ilkay Gundogan's left-wing corner.

City's wastefulness in front of goal continued when Gundogan met David Silva's low delivery, the Germany international somehow turning the ball onto the crossbar from close range.Everton slowly grew into the game and although they began to pose a threat, Ederson was rarely worried as the hosts ran out of ideas in the final third.

And that proved costly as City broke the deadlock on the brink of half-time, Laporte making amends for his earlier faux pas with a powerful header from David Silva's precise free-kick.Ederson was finally called into action early in the second half, the Brazilian having no problems holding onto Idrissa Gueye's long-range effort.

It did not take City long to re-establish control, however, and Sergio Aguero almost added to his 14 league goals with an acrobatic effort, the striker leaping into action after David Silva had blocked Pickford's progress to a high ball.

City's profligacy continued as substitute Raheem Sterling saw an effort deflected over, but Jesus made no mistake in the seventh added minute, sending a looping header into the net after his initial effort had been saved.

Messi tops Ronaldo on highest-paid footballers list

Lionel Messi is the highest paid footballer in Europe, beating out Cristiano Ronaldo by over £3 million per month.

French publication L’Equipe has released its annual report of the top football salaries and it is no surprise to see the two stars are at the top of the list. However, some may be shocked by the order of the names that follow, as well as a couple of inclusions in the group.

The list is made up entirely of players from the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1, with the Bundesliga the sole top-five league that does not have a representative in the top 10.Messi leads the way, as the Barcelona talisman and current top scorer in La Liga earns £7.3 million ($9.5m) a month before tax.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who is in the first year with Juventus, comes in second with a salary of £4.1m, just over half of what his old rival pockets. While many might expect Neymar to slot in behind, the Paris Saint-Germain star actually clocks in fourth, earning £2.7 million a month.

Instead, it is Atletico Madrid and France star Antoine Griezmann who has the third spot, earning £2.9 million thanks to the new deal he signed with the club after his decision last season to snub Barcelona.

Messi’s team-mate Luis Suarez rounds out the top five, earning £2.5 million to lead the line at Barcelona.Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale is sixth on the list, earning £2.2 million at the Bernabeu and is the only Real Madrid representative in the top 10.

Meanwhile, Barcelona has three, as in addition to Messi and Suarez, Philippe Coutinho is seventh on the list, as he earns £2m off the contract he signed with the Liga club in January 2018.

The first Premier League representative is Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez, who likewise earns around £2m per month at Old Trafford.PSG is once again represented on the list with Neymar’s team-mate Kylian Mbappe pulling in £1.5m.

Rounding out the top 10 is another Premier League player as Mesut Ozil earns £1.4 million per month with Arsenal. The highest earning Bundesliga player is Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, who missed out with a £1.2m monthly salary.

Neymar and Mbappe were nearly joined on the list by Edinson Cavani, who earns £1.3 million. In fact, all five of the highest paid players in Ligue 1, according to L’Equipe are at PSG, as Thiago Silva and Angel Di Maria round out that top five at around £1m per month.

English clubs have overtaken Bundesliga teams in youth production - Zorc

English teams have overtaken German clubs when it comes to producing young players, Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc says.As ex-Manchester City youth Jadon Sancho continues to shine with Bundesliga leaders Dortmund and Arsenal's Reiss Nelson enjoying a bright loan spell at Hoffenheim, the German top-flight has become an attractive league for young English players deprived of a chance to prove themselves in the Premier League.

Emile Smith Rowe became the latest to join a German side when he moved to RB Leipzig on loan from Arsenal in January, while Bayern Munich are targeting Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has been frustrated by a lack of playing time at Chelsea.

Zorc believes the influx of English players heading to Germany marks a turning of the tables, as just a few years ago the stream of transfers was going in the opposite direction.

“Let’s go back say five or 10 years... there was a time that English clubs signed German players,” he is quoted as saying in The Guardian. "There was a lot of discussion here: ‘It’s all about money you know, it’s too early for them to go from Germany to England.’ But, in the meantime we have the feeling that, yes, the education and development of youth players in the English academies is quite good, to be honest.

"The teams don’t only spend much money on transfers or salaries but also on infrastructure. When you see these youth academies – for example Man City – you can’t compare it with the German standard. It’s much higher, much higher."

The 56-year-old believes teams in England have found a lucrative business in selling young players even before they have established themselves in the first team."It seems to me that it’s something like a business model for them because even if they don’t succeed in their own teams they sell them for higher prices," he added.

"I just read a figure of Man City – I think they’ve sold young players for more than €150 million within the last three or five years. You can recognise it also in results. You know the English teams are reaching under-17, under-19 [finals] compared to the German ones. It seems to me that they overtook us."

The director is concerned that German football is slipping beyond many other nations, seeing his own club rely on foreign talents like Sancho, Ousmane Dembele and Christian Pulisic."At the moment we do not have this absolute top quality in the German youth," he told Kicker.

"Unfortunately I have the feeling that German football is being overtaken left and right. As far as 17 to 21-year-olds are concerned, we are simply not doing well in international comparisons, as was the case a few years ago."

Barcelona must prepare for Messi retirement, says Bartomeu

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says the club are investing in "great young players" in preparation for life after Lionel Messi.

With 29 goals from 28 games in all competitions, captain Messi remains the star player for Ernesto Valverde's team, but at 31 years old La Liga's top scorer may be in his last few seasons at the top of the sport. The Argentine sensation will be 34 when his contract runs out in 2021 and although Bartomeu expects him to sign on for a few more years, he knows he cannot carry on forever.

The Catalan side have already wrapped up the signing of two young players who will move to Camp Nou in the summer as they look to build a team for the future.

Frenkie de Jong will join from Ajax at the end of the season for an initial €75 million (£65m/$85m) and 20-year-old right-back Emerson is on his way from Atletico Mineiro. Those two deals add to their previous acquisitions of Malcom, Arthur, Clement Lenglet and Jean-Clair Todibo over the last two transfer windows.Bartomeu's term as president will also come to an end in 2021 and he is confident that he will leave the Spanish champions in good shape to maintain their place among Europe's elite even after their talisman brings an end to his career.

"I know one day Lionel will say he's retiring," he told BBC Radio 5Live."We have to prepare the club for the future."We are bringing great young players to the team because we need to continue this era of success. That's our responsibility.

"My mandate will be finished in two seasons. So I need to leave the club in a great position and tell the new president 'that's our legacy'."Messi is top of La Liga's goal chart with 21 goals and is chasing his 10th title with Barca, who sit six points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of the table with fierce rivals Real Madrid trailing by a further two points.

They are also in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with Madrid, with the first leg finishing a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou and the second leg to follow at the Bernabeu on February 27.

'We believe we can win the league' - Alisson insists Liverpool's title belief is unshaken

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is still confident of the club claiming their first top-flight title for 29 years despite a recent wobble.Manchester City's 2-0 win at Everton on Wednesday saw the defending champions regain top spot from the Reds for the first time in almost two months.

City have played a game more – the trip to Goodison Park was moved forward on account of them reaching the EFL Cup final later this month – but Liverpool's back-to-back 1-1 draws having led against Leicester City and West Ham left the door ajar.

Jurgen Klopp's men will play their game in hand at Manchester United but first must host Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday.Asked whether nerves are beginning to affect his team-mates, Brazil international Alisson told Sky Sports: "I wouldn't say anything on the matter. We believe we can win the league.

"We've shown in the past that we're good enough and we'll continue to show this in the games we've got to come."Our pressure is the same. We take things game by game without worrying about what our opponents are doing.

"Everyone wants to win this league but at Liverpool our concern is winning games and not dropping points."We don't think about Man City, we think about ourselves. We only think about what we can do and how things are moving forward."

The Brazil international is in his first season at Anfield after a then-record breaking £67 million ($86m) move from Roma. The move has paid dividends in year one, as the Reds have conceded just 15 goals in their 25 Premier League games, which is topp of the league.

And Alisson is determined to complete his debut season with the club with the Reds long-sought after Premier League title, though he knows Liverpool must keep their eyes on their next match.

Alisson added: "I really want to win the Premier League with Liverpool. We need to win games and we need to focus on our next opponent."To get back to the top of the league we need to win games - that comes from hard work, starting on Saturday."

'Being flashy is important on and off the pitch' - Rashford & Pogba front Man Utd partnership with Remington

Manchester United have entered into a multi-year partnership with Remington which will see a global leader in personal care become the club’s first official electrical styling partner.

The deal includes both the men and women’s teams at Old Trafford and is intended to help deliver “high-impact marketing campaigns to grow the Remington brand globally”.Early promotions will focus on a celebration of “individuality and the power of inner confidence”.

‘The Story of You’ will underpin the brand’s mission recognising that “everyone’s journeys, experiences, values and aspirations make up who they are as individuals”.United boast several high-profile figures on their books whose personalities and image stretch well beyond the boundaries of a football field.

Among those is England international Marcus Rashford, with the in-form forward saying of his desire to shine in both his professional and private life: “If I see an opportunity to do something flashy or a bit different, then I do that and I think it’s the same off the pitch.”Paul Pogba is another of those who takes as much pride in his appearance as he does his performances as a World Cup-winning midfielder.

The Frenchman said as part of the ‘Story of You’ campaign: “You can’t really hide anymore – people see you, they watch the game. Football has become even more famous, it’s everywhere and taking pictures is normal. So, you try to look good.”

United are delighted to have added another global brand to their ever-growing list of partners, with group managing director Richard Arnold telling the club’s official website: “Remington is one of the most famous and established brands in their field and they are a great addition to our family of commercial partners.

“Our partnership is not only about bringing our fans high-end styling products, it aims to inspire and encourage individuality though powerful activations and campaigns with both Manchester United’s men’s and women’s team.”

Tim Wright, vice president for appliances at Spectrum Holdings, added: “Our partnership with Manchester United provides us with a fantastic opportunity to showcase the quality and versatility of Remington products with passionate fans of the world’s biggest and most revered sports brand.

“We have an impressive record of breaking the mould with our product innovation, and this will be translated into our partnership with Manchester United, and in particular our involvement with both the men’s and women’s teams.”

Lingard: The world's Rashford's oyster & Mbappe's talent is frightening

Jesse Lingard has talked up the talent of team-mate Marcus Rashford, stating that "the world is his oyster" as the young striker spearheads Manchester United's revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 21-year-old had been forced to play from the wing under former boss Jose Mourinho, with the formidable frame of Romelu Lukaku the Portuguese's preferred centre-forward option during his time at the club.Solskjaer's reign has seen Rashford return to the striker position, however, and the decision to reinstate the England international to his preferred role has seen him rack up six goals in 10 matches .

Lingard is one of the many enjoying his team-mate's current form, and says that he likes to offer his own services as guidance for the youngster.“He's so young and he's achieving so much – the world is his oyster,” Lingard told Goal . “He's a humble kid, he always keeps his feet on the ground.

“He loves his football and plays with a smile on his face, which is important too.His form has been great at the moment, he's relishing every opportunity and making them count.“He works hard and helps the team with goals and assists, that's very important for us. We press from the top and he starts that off for us too.“I like to look after him when he gets into trouble on the pitch, I'm always there to back him. It started at the Man City game, he got into a little bit of beef.

“I like to be there for him. Ever since then it has carried on, whether it's with England on Man United. I've always been there and I'll back him no matter what.”

The Red Devils will soon host Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, with both sides eager to progress past the round of 16.United have been handed something of an advantage for both legs of the tie, with Neymar having been ruled out for 10 weeks with a metatarsal injury.

Lingard admits that he considers the Brazilian to be among the best in the game, a player to draw inspiration from, but knows that making it past PSG will be no easy task due to the other quality players plying their trade in the French capital.“Neymar is up there with the best in the world and you can learn from players like that,” he said. “You want to play against the best players and teams in the world and they've got a couple of them.

“Their team is doing well at the moment. Mbappe is a very good footballer - he's come a long way to get to where he is now. He's still so young... it's frightening really.“We want to relish this opportunity and play against the best. Champions League at home to PSG, you can't get much bigger than that.

“We want to win and if we apply ourselves right we can get the job done.”Manchester United first play PSG on Tuesday, February 12 at Old Trafford.

:(:(:(Emiliano Sala's death confirmed as body found in plane wreckage identified as Cardiff City striker

    H9gnrKb.jpg

The body found in wreckage of a plane carrying Emiliano Sala and pilot David Ibbotson has been identified as the Cardiff City striker, local police confirmed on Thursday night.

The UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) had confirmed on Wednesday that an unidentified body had been passed to the Dorset Coroner , having been recovered from the stricken plane.

The Piper Malibu aircraft disappeared with Sala and pilot David Ibbotson on board on January 21 , with the 28-year-old en route to Cardiff from having completed a club-record transfer from Ligue 1 side Nantes.

A police statement issued late on Thursday read: "The body brought to Portland Port today, Thursday 7 February 2019, has been formally identified by HM Coroner for Dorset as that of professional footballer Emiliano Sala.

"The families of Mr Sala and the pilot David Ibbotson have been updated with this news and will continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers. Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time."HM Coroner will continue to investigate the circumstances of this death supported by Dorset Police."

An initial search and rescue effort was called off by Guernsey Police after three days on January 24.Guernsey harbourmaster Captain David Barker called their chances of survival "extremely remote" , but a number of high-profile football figures and members of the public answered the family's calls to fund a private search operation.

The plane was located on the seabed off Guernsey on Sunday using a remotely operated vehicle, during which time a body was found amid what remained of the light aircraft.A recovery operation was then launched following consultation with the families of Sala and Ibbotson, and the police.

The football world came together in grief and to pay its respects as the severity of the Sala story began to unfold, with floral tributes laid outside Cardiff City Stadium and vigils held in Nantes, where 42 goals in three-and-a-half seasons made him a fan favourite.

Following reports of a dispute between the two clubs this week, Cardiff chairman Mehmet Dalman confirmed the Premier League outfit was yet to pay the first instalment of Sala's transfer fee ."We must show respect to the family. There is a process for recovering the plane," he said, prior to Sala's body being identified.

"[We will pay] when we think it's the right time to do it. I don't think Cardiff said we were not going to pay."

Man Utd and Chelsea are favourites for fourth place, claims Emery

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has admitted that Chelsea and Manchester are favourites to finish in the top four.

With Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham pulling away from the chasing pack, it now appears there is only one remaining Champions League spot available. That place, it seems, will be contested between Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, with the trio separated by just three points in the table.

However, given that the Gunners are bottom ranked in the three-team mini league, Emery believes they are the least likely to make the top four. When asked whether he considered Arsenal to be outsiders to qualify for the Champions League, Emery responded: “Now, yes.

“Because we are sixth. It's practical but it is like that. I trust in our capacity to take but it is like that.A 3-1 defeat in their last outing against Manchester City has not helped the Gunners' cause, and the north London club have struggled against the league’s top sides, with Arsenal also being humiliated 5-1 by Liverpool earlier in the season.

"The first is [to say] there are teams now better than us," Emery said, when asked about his record against the best sides in the division."They have an advantage to us. And we need to be calm and also very demanding of ourselves in our minds for work and to be consistent over 38 matches.

“Now Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, also – they are doing a big difference between us, but Chelsea and Manchester United, very big teams, also with a difference [to the top three] but they are closer than us."We can think our way is hard, is strong, is difficult but with a possibility and the possibility is because we are three points only behind Chelsea and one point behind Manchester United and they are two very big teams.

"I think we need to continue thinking in our capacity to be in the top four. But knowing it's difficult.“It's not to think we're playing under pressure, it's to be demanding and also [we have] ambition to be in the top four. Also knowing other teams, they have an advantage to us.”Arsenal face Huddersfield on Saturday and know a win could see them go level on points with fourth-place Chelsea.

Solskjaer: Man Utd don't need to buy superstars to contend for title

Caretaker Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that his side don't need to buy "superstars" to contend for a title.Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho in December, who complained publically about his side's lack of investment in the transfer market.

The Norweigan has since led United to a reversal of fortune, winning nine of his 10 games in charge thus far and coaxing better form from the likes of Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.

Still, United are a way off from challenging for a title, with Solskjaer's men in fifth place, 14 points back of co-leaders Manchester City and Liverpool.Solskjaer was asked on Friday how many additions United would need in the summer, and the manager indicated that his side's fortunes would not be completely tied up in the transfer market.“I think it is about who we’ve got here as well," Solskjaer said. "If every single player can improve by one or two per cent… it is not about X amount of players.

“It has to be the right one, and one who fits. The personality has to fit with the team, it is not just [about] buying a superstar and that will fix things and suddenly we go from challenging [for] the top four to being champions.”Solskjaer continued by saying he believes his side already have what it takes to compete for all trophies.

“The club and the team can, yes,” the 45-year-old said. “If you look at the players, the age of them, they’re young and they’ve got plenty of development in them. But we also need some experienced players to stay and step up and really become the leaders.“Paul now is [25], Jesse [26]… they’re at that age where we expect them to take that responsibility and not just be a young boy that floats around. So this club, this team, yes definitely [we can compete for everything].”

Solskjaer conceded that winning the league this season would be too difficult, but believes it will be possible in future seasons with more consistency. “I think we’re too far behind this year, obviously, but you’ve got to catch up the other teams ahead of us, especially City, Liverpool but now Tottenham."So it’s three teams who have been far ahead but we’ve beaten Tottenham so we know that we’re capable of that but we need the consistency."

Hazard: Sarri and I think the same way about football

Eden Hazard believes he and Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri are on the same footballing wavelength. The Belgium forward's next move remains a subject of intense speculation, something he fanned himself this week by declaring he had made a decision on his Chelsea future.

Real Madrid have been heavily linked to the 28-year-old, while mixed returns on the field during Sarri's first season in charge at Stamford Bridge have underpinned the uncertainty.

The 60-year-old Italian has lavished praise on Hazard, declaring him Europe's best player on Friday, but does not feel a player who captains his country is a leader.

Chelsea face Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, a dress rehearsal for their meeting in the Carabao Cup final later this month, and Hazard told The Times he feels in tune with Sarri as he tackles the ongoing process over overhauling his club's style of play."He's an old man but the way he thinks is the same way I think about football," he said.

"When we have the ball, we have a lot of freedom, not just me but the striker and the right [attacker], Willian or Pedro, so we can move a lot."The manager likes possession. He's a lot about statistics. Numbers. Possession. Shooting. Goal opportunity.

"In the past we used to play more counter-attack. It is different with Sarri than with [Antonio] Conte and [Jose] Mourinho. Sometimes we keep possession, and I understand the fans want us to go forward [more directly], but it is part of the football."We are still learning about his concept. We are doing well. I like this kind of football."

Hazard recently acknowledged his capacity to irritate coaches and stated Mourinho and Conte and others have overestimated his capabilities as a goalscorer, while suggesting Sarri's observation of him being an individual as opposed to a leader could be wide of the mark."I'm not at all selfish. The way I am can be a weakness to be the best player in the world," he said.

"Managers like Mourinho, Conte, now with Sarri want me to score 40, 50 goals a season but can I do that? I'm not sure. Maybe they think I can, but I know myself and I don't think I can. But I will try."I like to be 'the star' but I like also when I can pass the ball to another for him to score and it is not just about me. It's about everyone. My target is to help the team to win something."

The goalscoring burden at Chelsea now falls heavily on new arrival Gonzalo Higuain and Hazard senses a fruitful relationship with the Argentina striker."I've only played two games with Higuain and I know we can do something great together - not only with him but also with the other strikers, the other wingers," he added.

"Chelsea is not about Higuain and Hazard, it is about 25 players. But Higuain is a fantastic striker."

:sorry:Valencia setback confirmed by Solskjaer as Man Utd skipper heads towards free agency

Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia has suffered a fresh injury setback that will keep him out of the trip to Fulham, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed.
Valencia, 33, is considered likely to leave Old Trafford at the end of a season in which he has featured in just five Premier League matches. The last of those came in the 2-0 win at Newcastle United on January 2, his only appearance under interim manager Solskjaer.

The Ecuador international has retained the captaincy despite persistent fitness problems, the newest of which has prevented him from taking up a place in Saturday's squad."Well hopefully he'll recover [before the end of the season] because he's been training hard, really hard," Solskjaer said of Valencia.

"Then he got a setback so hopefully in a couple of weeks he'll [be available]."He's captain for us, hopefully we can get him back on the pitch but it was hard when he broke down. He would've travelled now this weekend."Solskjaer will, however, have an upbeat Phil Jones at his disposal following the defender's commitment to a new four-year contract on Friday.

The 26-year-old was due to become a free agent at the end of the season but is now tied to United until at least June 2023, with the club reserving the option for an additional 12-month extension."It's a signal for the players we believe in them, for the supporters that we plan ahead," Solskjaer said.

"Phil has been here for so long, he's won the Premier League, trophies, he knows what it takes. He's been here so long so he knows what it takes for us to move up the table."

"On Friday morning, our thoughts turn towards David Ibbotson and his family, in the hope that the authorities can do everything to find him."We ask you for respect during our mourning in these difficult times and to keep Emi in your prayers and in your thoughts."

:cool:There's no other player like Rashford, he'll be unstoppable – Herrera

Ander Herrera was unable to name another player cut from the same cloth as Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford and believes the striker will go on to become 'unstoppable'.

Rashford has enjoyed a resurgence under new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who appears to prefer the 21-year-old ahead of Romelu Lukaku as his first choice centre-forward, with the England international reaping the benefits in terms of goals scored.

Jose Mourinho had more often than not relegated Rashford to the wing during his tenure at Old Trafford, but Herrera feels that, while there are plenty of great wide men in today's game, his team-mate has something extra.

“He's different,” Herrera told ESPN. “We know at the moment there are some fantastic wingers in modern football: Ousmane Dembele, Raheem Sterling, Anthony Martial, Eden Hazard... but Marcus is different.

“Marcus can shoot, he can play one-against-one, but he also has the quality to combine and not lose the ball for the team.“I couldn't name another player that reminds me of Marcus Rashford. I think he's already a top, top, top player, but I think he will improve with time in his decision making and he will be unstoppable.”

And, while Herrera feels the England attacker is the complete package as far as forwards go, he also reserved special praise for Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata.

The Spaniard acknowledges that the duo are more limited in their skills, but insists that they use what they do have to outstanding effect. He added: “We all know Lingard doesn't have the one-on-one ability that Rashford or Martial or Alexis Sanchez have, but he has other qualities that are very important.

“When I receive the ball, as soon as I turn, I know Jesse is moving to receive the ball. Juan Mata is quite similar, they're always ready to get the ball and help the team.“Football is about making the right decisions. That's why Mata is still playing and playing fantastically.

“I always say to him that he's not the quickest, he's not the strongest, he doesn't have the best shot, but he always makes the right decision.“When you see one of us shooting on goal, who is the one that is always ready for the rebound from the goalkeeper? Mata.

“When you see one of our full-backs crossing the ball, who is always in the right position in the pitch in the box? Mata.“When the team is struggling and we need an extra midfielder to come to play, who is there? Juan Mata.”

United return to Premier League action with a trip to Fulham on Saturday, keen to stay in the chase for a spot in the top four.

:love::love:Rashford and Solskjaer take home January Premier League honors

    RZxeslY.jpg

Manchester United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won the Premier League's Manager of the Month award for January, while his striker Marcus Rashford clinched the players' prize.Solskjaer has had a remarkable impact on United since replacing Jose Mourinho on a temporary basis, presiding over seven wins in eight league matches.

Although United were rarely spectacular in January, they won three of their four matches and came from 2-0 down at home to Burnley to rescue an unlikely point at the end of the month.

That form has helped United climb above Arsenal in the Premier League table, and they can overtake Chelsea – even if only until Sunday – when they travel to struggling Fulham on Saturday.Rashford has been vital since Solskjaer's arrival, with the England international instantly earning the Norwegian's trust and being given a real run as United's first-choice striker ahead of Romelu Lukaku.

He scored in all but one of their four matches in January, netting three in total from wins over Newcastle United, Tottenham and Brighton and Hove Albion.

It is the first time since January 2011 that United have won both awards in the same month - Alex Ferguson and Dimitar Berbatov taking them home on that occasion.

Fulham's Andre Schurrle won the Goal of the Month award for his stunning volley against Burnley, though Sean Dyche's men won the match 2-1.
