Manchester City 6 Chelsea 0: Aguero hits historic hat-trick as champions run riot and reclaim top spot

    9629858-6688395-image-a-57_1549817870359.jpg

Sergio Aguero equalled the record for Premier League hat-tricks as a rampant Manchester City thrashed Chelsea 6-0 at home to leapfrog Liverpool and return to the table's summit.

Chelsea were hammered 4-0 at Bournemouth in their last away league match and Maurizio Sarri's side were taken apart by the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, the Blues suffering their heaviest ever Premier League loss.

Raheem Sterling struck in the fourth minute and Ilkay Gundogan rapidly made it four after Aguero's first-half double, with Chelsea unable to muster any response in the face of City's incredible intensity.

Aguero, who also hit a treble in City's last home league game against Arsenal, stroked home a penalty after the break to join Alan Shearer on 11 Premier League hat-tricks and Sterling struck late to complete the scoring.Pep Guardiola's side move above Liverpool on goal difference, with the Catalan coach enjoying a crushing victory against a side he has lost to on a record three league occasions.

Sterling opened the scoring with a thumping drive after Bernardo Silva's cross deflected into his path, then Aguero somehow missed an open goal from three yards out.

Aguero soon made amends with a thunderous 25-yard drive after great work from Oleksandr Zinchenko and he then capitalised on Ross Barkley's abysmal header to become City's record league goalscorer.

City's fourth came from Gundogan, his placed 20-yard shot beating Kepa Arrizabalaga, with Ederson brilliantly tipping over Gonzalo Higuain's volley at the other end before the break.Aguero's header from Kevin De Bruyne's cross crashed against the crossbar but the Argentina attacker was able to celebrate his historic treble in the 56th minute.

Sterling's pace and skill drew a clumsy Cesar Azpilicueta foul inside the box and Aguero beat Kepa once more with an excellent penalty.Guardiola was able to rest City's hat-trick hero, De Bruyne and Fernandinho for the closing stages and Sterling tapped in a cross from the lively Zinchenko for a simple sixth.

Tottenham 3 Leicester City 1: Eriksen and Son seal victory after Vardy misses penalty

    9626678-6688157-image-a-39_1549810738519.jpg

Tottenham battled to a 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Sunday to close to within five points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.A first goal for the club from Davinson Sanchez and a fine strike from Christian Eriksen were enough to give Mauricio Pochettino's side the win at Wembley.

Jamie Vardy, who missed a penalty with his first touch as a substitute, halved the deficit with 14 minutes to go but Son Heung-min struck a third on the break to seal the three points in injury time.

Kasper Schmeichel blocked a Danny Rose strike after a good run from the left-back, but Leicester looked the more threatening of the sides in the opening half-hour, with James Maddison twice dragging shots wide from good positions.

It was Spurs who struck first after 33 minutes, though. Kieran Trippier sent a corner to Eriksen on the edge of the box, and his cross was headed in by Sanchez, who looked very close to being offside.

Demarai Gray headed a great chance straight at Hugo Lloris as Leicester threatened again early in the second half, with Puel turning to Vardy on the bench before the hour mark, but the striker saw his penalty comfortably saved by Lloris after Jan Vertonghen was judged to have fouled Maddison.

Three minutes later, Spurs had their second. Ricardo Pereira - who conceded possession in the build-up to Marcus Rashford's goal at the King Power Stadium last week - gave away the ball near his own box, allowing Fernando Llorente to set up Eriksen to fire beyond Schmeichel from 20 yards out.Harvey Barnes produced another tame finish when sent through on goal by Vardy, before Pereira made amends for his earlier error by sending in a low cross that Vardy flicked past Lloris.

Any threat of a comeback was killed by Son in injury time, though, as he raced clear on the break into Leicester's half of the field before slotting the ball beyond Schmeichel.

Sassuolo 0 Juventus 3: Ronaldo on target as champions go 11 points clear

    9634422-6688877-image-a-11_1549827039264.jpg

Juventus extended their lead at the top of Serie A to 11 points after beating Sassuolo 3-0 courtesy of goals from Sami Khedira, Cristiano Ronaldo and Emre Can.

The champions recovered from a chaotic 3-3 draw at home against Parma with a straightforward victory and a more composed performance at MAPEI Stadium on Sunday.

Khedira scored his second goal of the season in the 23rd minute to put Juve in front and committed displays from Blaise Matuidi and Federico Bernardeschi ensured Massimiliano Allegri's men did not miss Paulo Dybala, who was named on the bench after he stormed off the touchline against Parma.

Ronaldo's 18th league goal of the season and a late strike from Can made sure of the Bianconeri's first victory in three matches across all competitions, coming a day after second-placed Napoli were held to a draw by Fiorentina to make a successful title defence look all the more likely.

Juve were given an early scare when Filip Djuricic was allowed a clear run into the box where Wojciech Szczesny brought him down, but the referee judged that the goalkeeper's challenge was legal after consulting VAR.Szczesny made a good save to deny Manuel Locatelli's rising drive from 20 yards before the visitors took the lead with their first clear chance of the game.

Ronaldo pounced on a poor clearance by Sassuolo keeper Andrea Consigli and started a move that saw his shot from the edge of the box saved before Khedira slotted home the rebound.

Khedira headed narrowly wide on the cusp of half-time and Ronaldo had the ball in the net six minutes into the second half but an offside flag was correctly raised against him.

Sassuolo captain Domenico Berardi missed an open goal from 35 yards when Szczesny fluffed his lines at a clearance, shortly before Khedira failed to turn the ball over the line when Mario Mandzukic presented him with a golden chance just after the hour mark.Ronaldo rose to meet Miralem Pjanic's corner in the 70th minute, beating Consigli to the ball and sending a glancing header into the far corner.

Can came on for Matuidi and within a minute he made it 3-0, latching onto Ronaldo's unselfish ball across the edge of the Sassuolo box and sliding home a low, angled shot to wrap up a comfortable win.

Athletic Bilbao 0 Barcelona 0: Valverde's men held despite Messi's return to starting XI

    9637914-6688923-image-a-3_1549832602151.jpg

Lionel Messi's return to the starting line-up was not enough to prevent Barcelona drawing a third successive match across all competitions, as Athletic Bilbao held out for a 0-0 stalemate at San Mames in LaLiga.

Argentina superstar Messi was only named among the substitutes for Wednesday's 1-1 Copa del Rey draw against Real Madrid having struggled with a thigh injury and he looked a little off colour as Barca end the weekend just six points clear of Los Blancos in second.

Athletic edged an entertaining first half and went close on a couple of occasions, while Barca appeared to be missing the talents of Arthur in midfield – Arturo Vidal failing to impress in a similar role to the injured Brazilian, who faces a month out.

Ernesto Valverde's side had little luck creating clear-cut opportunities in the second half - albeit Nelson Semedo was contentiously denied a last-gasp penalty – and could have even have lost as Athletic, who had Oscar De Marcos sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time, went close twice late on.

Barca struggled to cope during the early exchanges and had two lucky escapes. Yuri Berchiche drilled just wide of the bottom-right corner before Markel Susaeta's curling effort forced Marc-Andre ter Stegen into a wonderful acrobatic save.

The visitors gradually gained a foothold and went mightily close in the 26th minute, as Iago Herrerin beat Semedo – who was incorrectly pulled back for being offside at the end of the move – and nudged the ball to Messi, whose first-time effort from distance hit the crossbar.Barca were convinced they should have had a penalty at the start of the second half when Luis Suarez's header appeared to strike the arm of Inigo Martinez, but nothing was given.

Athletic nearly took all of the points in the final 10 minutes, Inaki Williams heading wide from close range, before then seeing Ter Stegen produce a remarkable reaction save to thwart him from just 10 yards.

De Marcos was given his marching orders late on when handling the ball, and Barca were denied a penalty with the last action of the game – VAR failing to reward them despite Semedo appearing to be caught by Yeray Alvarez.

AC Milan 3 Cagliari 0: Paqueta and Piatek boost Rossoneri's top-four hopes

    vpxTVLk.jpg

Lucas Paqueta's first AC Milan strike and another Krzysztof Piatek goal helped Gennaro Gattuso's side to a 3-0 home win over Cagliari that moved the Rossoneri back up to fourth place in the Serie A table.

Wins for Atalanta, Roma and Lazio earlier in the weekend had shunted Milan down to seventh ahead of Sunday's clash with Rolando Maran's side at San Siro. But a freak own goal from defender Luca Ceppitelli gave Milan an early lead and their advantage was swiftly doubled by Brazilian attacker Paqueta.

Piatek wrapped up the scoring after the break with his fourth Milan goal and Gianluigi Donnarumma marked his 150th Rossoneri appearance with some fine saves in a well-earned clean sheet that keeps his side's Champions League qualification hopes on track.Milan had only won one of their past four home league games but they made a strong start, with Alessio Cragno making a smart stop to keep out Hakan Calhanoglu's powerful strike.

And Cragno was beaten in the 13th minute when his save from a Suso's shot deflected back into his own net off the arm of unfortunate Cagliari captain Ceppitelli.Milan made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute as Paqueta scored his first goal for the club, arriving at the back post to send a controlled volley past Cragno from Davide Calabria's right-wing cross.

Donnarumma saved well from Joao Pedro before the break and the same combination resulted in a key moment on the hour.Milan's goalkeeper parried Joao Pedro's effort and on the rebound the Cagliari striker hit the crossbar with a chip when he had to score.

That miss was soon punished as Piatek hit his 15th Serie A goal of the season, the in-form forward pouncing on the loose ball after Cragno rushed off his line to block Calhanoglu's shot.

Sarri expecting talks over Chelsea future after Man City thrashing

Maurizio Sarri expects to discuss his future with Chelsea as a direct result of the 6-0 hammering suffered away to Manchester City on Sunday.

The visitors shipped four goals inside the opening 25 minutes at the Etihad Stadium and conceded a further two after half-time in crashing to their heaviest ever Premier League loss.

The final scoreline was the worst of Sarri's coaching career and comes less than two weeks on from the dire 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth, which magnified the scrutiny of the Blues' development under the former Napoli boss.

The Italian was probed as to whether his job could be in danger during a post-match interview with Sky Sports and admitted talks with the club's hierarchy are likely to be held, though he stressed that was a "normal" outcome after a game. "I think that is right. I am in charge of the team and so it's right," Sarri said.

"I don't know at the moment, but I think that [talks] will happen. It's normal. Something we have to do." Pressed as to what those talks could mean for his tenure, he added: "You have to ask the club. I have no idea about this at the moment.

"I am worried about my team. I am worried about the performance but my job is always at risk so I am not worried about the club. You have to ask the club."
Sarri appeared to ignore City boss Pep Guardiola at the final whistle and did not shake the Spaniard's hand before heading straight down the tunnel.

Asked about the incident, Sarri said: "I didn’t see him at the moment but of course as usual I will go to say hello to him later as usual. It was by chance because I wanted to go to the dressing room and at the moment I didn’t see him. I have not a problem with Pep."Chelsea sit sixth in the Premier League and face a fight with Arsenal and Manchester United to secure Champions League qualification for next season.

Sarri admitted the mauling suffered against Guardiola's men was difficult to comprehend."It was really very difficult not to give them space and so we were in trouble, but I am not able to understand because as I said before in the week I had a very good feeling," he said.

"I think that we made a lot of mistakes against the wrong opponents. They played fantastic football and we made a lot of mistakes."

Nothing is impossible for Madrid – Solari eyes fourth straight Champions League

Santiago Solari believes Real Madrid can win a fourth consecutive Champions League, saying "nothing is impossible" for the European giants.Madrid have been dominant in Europe in recent years, winning the continent's top club competition in three straight seasons.Despite being less convincing so far this campaign, Solari feels Madrid can make it four in a row in 2019.

Asked what came to mind when he thought of the challenge of winning a fourth straight title, the head coach told UEFA: "That nothing is impossible for Real Madrid."
Madrid's first step in the knockout stage is Ajax, with the first leg of their last-16 tie to be played in Amsterdam on Wednesday.

Solari knows the challenge awaiting Madrid against the Dutch giants, who last won the competition in 1995."Ajax are very well known for their work in the youth system, for their commitment to young talent and their offensive football," he said.

"That's the way they still work, with a team that has already shown that it was competitive last year and that it remains competitive this year.

"The tie is going to be difficult, like all these occasions in the Champions League."Following the match against Ajax, Madrid will return to La Liga play against Girona having won for consecutive league matches. The club currently six points behind rivals Barcelona following the leaders' scoreless draw with Athletic Bilbao on Sunday

:love:Martial has the talent to reach Ronaldo's level, says Solskjaer

Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Anthony Martial has the talent to emulate famed Red alumnus Cristiano Ronaldo, while warning that he will have to work hard to reach those levels.

Martial stole the show during United's 3-0 defeat of Fulham with a fantastic solo goal that brought to mind a similar strike at Craven Cottage from the current Juventus star in 2007.That performance prompted team-mate Juan Mata to call Martial the "French Ronaldo", a term that Solskjaer believes could prove prophetic with the right work-rate.

“Yes, it was towards the end of the game and we played a very poor game and Cristiano scored it,” Solskjaer said when asked about the similarities with Ronaldo's famous strike.“He does have similarities, of course.“If he wants to be at Cristiano’s level, Anthony knows what he has to do. It’s up to him. He has the talent.

“I am glad he is in my team. He has contributed to so many chances, so many goals."He is a Manchester United player. He excites the crowd. He excites the manager. He excites his team-mates. And he is a great character around the place.”United are back in action on Tuesday, when they will face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of an Anglo-French Champions League last-16.

PSG have been hit by the absence of Neymar, who is recovering from a metatarsal break, and are almost certain to be without Edinson Cavani after the Uruguayan suffered a thigh injury in Saturday's victory over Bordeaux.“When you play against the best teams, you want to play against the players,” Solskjaer added.

“The crowd want to see the best players. Too bad for Old Trafford.“I have played a couple of games when we played Real Madrid and Ronaldo and (Luis) Figo and all those were coming to Old Trafford. That gives it an extra edge.“Unfortunately for Neymar he is injured, but of course he is a quality player. I think our right-back thinks it is not too bad he will not be here.”

:cool:Aguero equals Shearer's all-time Premier League hat-trick record with treble against Chelsea

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has equalled Alan Shearer's Premier League record of 11 hat-tricks following his 56-minute treble against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Argentina star struck twice in the first half at Etihad Stadium and added a third with a penalty to put City 5-0 up soon after the interval and earn a share of top spot alongside former Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United striker Shearer.City went on to win the match 6-0, with Aguero taken off after 65 minutes to a huge ovation from the Etihad faithful.

Shearer, who is the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, notched the last of his 11 Premier League hat-tricks 20 years ago for the Magpies in September 1999.

Aguero, City's all-time top scorer with 220 goals in all competitions, also became the sixth player to register 200 goal involvements for a single Premier League side in the process while surpassing Tommy Johnson and Eric Brook as the club's most prolific player in league fixtures.

The 30-year-old's dominant display against a thoroughly outplayed Chelsea marked his second treble in the space of a week, having inflicted similar damage upon Arsenal in City’s 3-1 victory seven days earlier.

It means he becomes just the fifth player to score back-to-back home hat-tricks in the Premier League and the first since Didier Drogba did so for Chelsea against Wigan and West Brom in 2010.

With nine Premier League hat-tricks at the Etihad, Aguero has also set a record for the most trebles by a player at a single ground, breaking the record held by Thierry Henry at Highbury.

Former Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester City striker Robbie Fowler is third on the hat-trick leaderboard with nine, while Tottenham's Harry Kane (eight) is the only other active Premier League player to have notched more than three.

Michael Owen and Thierry Henry finished their careers with eight apiece, one more than Wayne Rooney's seven and two ahead of the six Luis Suarez managed for Liverpool. Two goals from Raheem Sterling and another from Ilkay Gundogan completed a comprehensive victory for Pep Guardiola’s men at Etihad Stadium.

It meant City returned to the top of the Premier League on goal difference ahead of Liverpool, albeit having played a game more.City’s next three matches come in three different competitions, with League Two Newport County next up in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

Guardiola’s side then take on German outfit Schalke in the Champions League before they head to Wembley to play Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on February 24.

Juventus announce Ramsey deal as Arsenal midfielder signs four-year contract

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has signed with Juventus for next season, with the Serie A champions having announced the Welshman will join the club in the summer on a four-year deal.Ramsey was in the final six months of his contract with the Gunners, which made him eligible to sign a pre-contract and leave the London club for free in the summer.

Wages were not disclosed, but Goal understands Ramsey will earn €7 million (£6m/$8m) plus bonuses per year.

Juventus also announced they will pay a €3.7m fee to register Ramsey. After the announcement, Ramsey penned a farewell message to the Gunners faithful on Instagram, thanking them for their support throughout the years and promising to give his all in his final months with the team. "As you may have already heard, I have agreed a pre-contract with Juventus football club," Ramsey wrote. "I wanted to issue a personal statement for all the Arsenal fans who have been extremely loyal and supportive.

"You welcomed me as a teenager and have been there for me through all the highs and lows I've encountered during my time at the club. It is with a heavy heart that I leave after 11 incredible years in North London."Thank you. I will continue to give the 100% and hope to finish the season strongly, before heading on to my next chapter in Turin."

Arsenal also released a statement, thanking Ramsey for his time at the club saying: "Aaron’s made a fantastic contribution to our club since joining from Cardiff City in 2008. He has always been a consummate professional and will always have a special place in the hearts and memories of Arsenal fans around the world.

"We look forward to Aaron helping the team to a strong end to this season before he joins Juventus in the summer."Ramsey will bring to a close an 11-year run with Arsenal, having been part of three FA Cup winning sides turning his time with the Gunners after moving from Cardiff City in the summer of 2008.

However, his playing time decreased this season as he made nine starts and 13 substitute appearances in the Premier League this season under new manager Unai Emery.

He had previously announced his intent on running down his deal after talks broke down with Arsenal early in the season, with reports of interest from Juventus, along with Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals Manchester United and Liverpool.Despite the increasing likelihood of his departure, Ramsey has been hailed by Emery for his effort as he continues to push for a strong finish to the 2018-19 season.

He becomes the third Welsh player to feature for Juventus following John Charles and former European Golden Boot winner Ian Rush.

'Leader' Pogba can make the difference at any time, says PSG boss Tuchel

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Thomas Tuchel has sent out a warning to his squad regarding the dangers posed by Manchester United's Paul Pogba, the German trainer highlighting the midfielder's ability to change the outcome of a match 'at any time'.

Old Trafford is the stage for perhaps the most anticipated Champions League clash of the week, with a revitalised Red Devils side eyeing European glory after having fallen short in the Premier League title race.Ahead of the match, Tuchel reserved special praise for United's star midfielder, as well as warning against the threat Pogba's countryman Anthony Martial brings for the English giants.

“Paul Pogba is an unbelievable talent with lots of ability,” Tuchel told a press conference on Monday. “He's a key player. He's very strong on the ball, he rarely gives it away, he's strong in one-on-ones and can make the difference at any time. He's a leader now and he plays like one.

“Pogba's always dangerous offensively alongside Martial – they're a very dangerous pairing. Pogba is also a threat in the penalty area as well when the ball comes in from the right and he arrives at the right time in the box.”

Julian Draxler, who will be standing in for one of PSG's many injured parties, feels that he and his team-mates can stop the French World Cup winner, however.“I've known Pogba for a while,” Draxler said. “We've come up against each other a few times and sometimes managed to stop him. He can do everything, but can stop him too.”

Man Utd's fortunes have changed dramatically since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over from Jose Mourinho, but even with the absences of Neymar and Edinson Cavani to name a few, Tuchel believes that the clash at Old Trafford is well balanced.“The Ole Gunnar Solskjaer effect!” Tuchel enthused. “I don't know how he does it, but as we say in Germany: you don't ask what the doctor does – as long as you feel better, that's enough!

“Manchester United are currently in great form, but we can still call this a 50-50 match. An unfavourable refereeing decision can change everything, we know that. But overall it looks like it will be a tight match.

“Mentally, PSG have improved. If we had not, we would not have drawn against Napoli while under pressure and beaten Liverpool.“We were solid, like a real team should be.”

Icardi & Lautaro are the future of Inter – Zanetti

Javier Zanetti, Inter legend and current director of football at the Italian club, claims that Lautaro Martinez and Mauro Icardi 'are the future' and that the Serie A side are lucky to have them.

After scoring an impressive 22 goals across 48 league matches for Racing in Argentina, Martinez, still only 21 years old, sealed a transfer to San Siro for a reported €23 million (£20m/$25m) fee.The Argentine still has some way to go to match the goal return of compatriot Icardi since his transfer in 2018, but both have the advantage of time on their side and Zanetti has backed the duo for big things.

“We are lucky to have Lautaro at Inter,” Zanetti said in an exclusive interview with Goal. “He was a big surprise for me because I didn't know him as a person, just as a player and I liked him.“The people at Inter like Lautaro so much. Getting used to the club is not as easy job, but he's doing very well and I believe he has a big future here.

“Icardi is young but he's amazing. What he's achieving at his age, how he adapted so well to Italian football... He's a well known striker around the world and we're lucky to have him here with us.“Icardi and Lautaro are the future.”Icardi has caught flak throughout his career, not least for his relationship with partner and agent Wanda Nara, the ex-wife of former team-mate Maxi Lopez.

In addition, Nara's comments over the hold up regarding Icardi signing a new deal with Inter have done him no favours either. Zanetti, however, feels those issues are blown out of proportion.

“Sadly, those news stories are profitable for the media,” he said. “But for those who really love football, we only care about the player, not his personal life.”Inter have spent some time in the proverbial wilderness in recent years, having fallen out of what could be described as Europe's elite.

A return to European football has pleased Zanetti, however, with the 45-year-old stating that making it back onto the big stage is just a small step in the club's long-term plans.“We achieved our goal last year of getting back in the Champions League,” he went on. “From now on, the plan is to keep improving.

“The team has a big identity. We're protagonists in the Italian league and we're always thinking about making forward steps.“Inter's wish is to not only evolve on the football pitch, but to improve our institution as a whole. We have undertaken many projects to make sure that happens.”

The Nerazzurri currently sit in third place in Serie A, four points ahead of cross-town rivals AC Milan, and are next in action against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on February 14.

He then went on to find the target on two occasions for Brazil at the World Cup finals in Russia.Much was expected of him in his first full campaign at Camp Nou, but he has mustered just five goals and as many assists across 27 appearances in La Liga and the Champions League.

A further three efforts have been registered in the Copa del Rey, with Barca still competing on multiple fronts and giving Coutinho as many chances as possible to play his way back into peak form.

Young signs one-year Man Utd contract extension

Manchester United defender Ashley Young has signed a new one-year contract extension, the club has announced on Monday afternoon. The 33-year-old's original deal was due to expire at the end of the current season, but he will now remain at Old Trafford until at least 2020.

Young has played a key role for the Red Devils this term, featuring in 25 matches across all competitions, despite competing with Diogo Dalot and Antonio Valencia for a regular spot at right-back.

The England full-back has enjoyed nine successful years at United, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and Carabao Cup.In total Young has amassed 227 appearances for the club, playing under the stewardship of Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and now Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer is currently serving as United's caretaker boss, but he has been widely tipped to be appointed the club's next permanent manager after overseeing ten wins in 11 matches.

Despite his advancing years, Young has been one of the players to directly benefit from the Norweigian's forward-thinking style, giving him the license to join in attacks in addition to fulfilling his defensive duties.

In the earlier stages of his career, the veteran full-back played as a winger, before Mourinho identified his capabilities as a defender.Young now joins Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Anthony Martial on the list of players who have committed to fresh deals at Old Trafford recently, while negotiations with David de Gea remain ongoing.

The Red Devils are now preparing for a huge last 16 Champions League tie against Paris Saint Germain, with the first leg taking place in Manchester on Tuesday evening.Solskjaer is expected to name Young in the starting the line-up against the French champions, after resting him for the 3-0 win against Fulham on Saturday.

United will then turn their attention to the FA Cup next Monday, with a trip to Stamford Bridge to face reigning champions Chelsea on the cards.

:love:Matic expects Man Utd to be Premier League title challengers in 2020

Manchester United will be Premier League title challengers in 2019-20 if they are able to maintain the standards they are currently setting, says Nemanja Matic.

The Red Devils were expected to force their way into contention for the crown this season having finished as runners-up behind record-breaking champions Manchester City in 2017-18.They were, however, to endure a humbling slump under the guidance of Jose Mourinho before the Portuguese was relieved of his duties in December.

A revival has since been overseen by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with United having collected 10 wins from an 11-game unbeaten run under the Norwegian.

Such form has lifted them back into the top four and rekindled belief that there are better times to come.Matic said of future ambitions: “To win the league you need to win the games as we did in the last seven, eight games.“So you need to win six, seven games in a row, then you can drop some points, to draw, to lose one game.

“This is the way to fight so if we play like this for the next season then we will be one of the teams who is going to fight for the title.”Matic knows what is required to lift the Premier League title having savoured two successes during his time at Chelsea. He is still waiting on a first trophy with United having been snapped up by the Red Devils in the summer of 2017.

FA Cup and Champions League campaigns continue to be pieced together this term, with heavyweight fixtures approaching in both of those competitions. The former is set to deliver a fifth-round clash with Chelsea and the latter a last-16 encounter with French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

Solskjaer will be hoping to see his unblemished record extended through those fixtures, with Matic hailing the belief that a Treble-winning hero of the past has returned to Old Trafford. He added: “He's always positive.

“Of course, when we don't play well, of course, he needs to shout a little bit.
“But he's the same - always positive. The same when I see him at the press conference, he's like this with us also.”United are set to play host to PSG on Tuesday before tackling Chelsea next Monday and welcoming Liverpool to Old Trafford in their next Premier League outing on February 24.

Man Utd legend Scholes takes on first managerial role at Oldham

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has been appointed the new manager of League Two side Oldham, with the ex-England international taking his first steps into coaching.

The 44-year-old has, outside of a brief spell working under Ryan Giggs in 2014 during the Welshman’s spell as caretaker manager at Old Trafford, focused on punditry work since hanging up his boots. He is now stepping out of the studio and into the dugout as he prepares to return to his roots having signed an 18-month contract with the club currently sat 14th in England's fourth tier.

Scholes has never made any secret of his affinity for Oldham and that a role at Boundary Park would appeal to him.He told ITV in January when talk of a position with the Latics first surfaced: “I’ve made no secret that I want to get back into football in some form of coaching.“I was a United fan as a young kid but my dad was an Oldham fan so it was a lot easier to go and watch Oldham.”

Scholes has also previously acknowledged that, having worked as a pundit and been outspoken in some of his opinions, he is open to criticism if things do not go to plan for him as a boss.He said: “If I go into coaching or management and results are not good, I have left myself open to a bit of stick but I am big enough to take it.”

Former United manager Jose Mourinho was among those to be questioned by Scholes on a regular basis prior to his dismissal by the Red Devils in December. The Portuguese did not take too kindly to seeing his methods mocked and will be among the interested observers as Scholes steps into the unknown.

Mourinho has said: “If Paul one day decides to be a manager, I wish that he can be 25 per cent as successful as myself. If he’s 25%, he’ll be quite happy.”Speaking about the appointment, Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam told the club's website: “Paul has won everything there is to win in football.

“He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.“It’s no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so I’m very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic.

“Paul will have my backing 100% and hopefully we can work together to bring success back to this club.”Scholes will be hoping to fare considerably better than that, but has a long road ahead of him.He is now following in the footsteps of former team-mates such as Giggs and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by moving into management.

Gary Neville has also tried his hand at coaching, but a saw a brief spell at La Liga side Valencia last just under four months.Scholes will be aware of that the pressure is on him to avoid suffering a fate similar to that endured by his fellow co-owner of Salford City.It is that stake in the National League promotion hopefuls which has delayed Oldham’s move to get a new manager on board.

With Scholes owning 10% of Salford, he has required clearance from the Football League to take another role – as rules prevent a person filling positions at two clubs at the same time.It has been determined that a holding of 10% or less can be disregarded as being “purely for investment purposes”, with the National League club also confirming that he has stepped down as a director at Salford.

Scholes' first match in charge will see his new side host Yeovil Town on February 12 as they look to bridge the nine-point gap to thos currently in the League Two play-off places.
