Tottenham 0 Liverpool 2: Salah on the spot as Reds seal Champions League glory

    14246620-7094461-image-m-118_1559424891215.jpg

Mohamed Salah put last season's final heartbreak behind him by setting up a 2-0 win over Tottenham in Madrid and a sixth Champions League triumph for Liverpool.Egypt star Salah was infamously injured in a challenge with Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos before the Reds subsided to a 3-1 defeat in Kiev 12 months ago but grabbed the opener in a largely forgettable contest at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The Premier League Golden Boot winner dispatched a second-minute penalty after Moussa Sissoko was penalised for handball.

Liverpool and their Premier League counterparts played in fits and starts thereafter, with Spurs enjoying their most consistent spell of pressure before substitute Divock Origi added to his semi-final brace against Barcelona by drilling clinically into the bottom-right corner three minutes from time.

After a moment's appreciation was observed for the late Jose Antonio Reyes the game began in dramatic fashion.

Sissoko errantly brought his arm away from his body and, under the current interpretations of the handball rule, was always likely to be punished once struck by Sadio Mane's chipped cross.Salah emphatically drilled the spot kick past Hugo Lloris.

Trent Alexander-Arnold sent a low drive whistling wide in the 18th minute and the Liverpool defender made a vital intervention as Son Heung-min threatened to go through on goal shortly afterwards.Lloris tipped over from the Reds' other full-back, Andy Robertson, as a scrappy first-half yielded no further goals.

Alexander-Arnold intervened to thwart Son once more after the break, with Klopp's decision to send on Origi and James Milner suggesting a focus upon containment. But Milner almost gave the Reds breathing space when he drove narrowly wide from 18 yards in the 69th minute.

Spurs' semi-final hero Lucas Moura scuffed a shot too close to fellow Brazilian Alisson, who did well to repel Christian Eriksen's rasping free-kick.
It fell to Origi to make sure for Liverpool and he made no mistake with a sweetly struck left-footed effort after Tottenham failed to clear a corner and Joel Matip nudged the ball into his path.

Unlikely Liverpool hero Origi delighted at 'unbelievable' Champions League triumph

Liverpool's surprise Champions League hero Divock Origi conceded he can barely believe the events of the last few months after getting his hands on the trophy after Saturday's 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

Origi has been at Liverpool since moving from Lille in 2015, but the striker has rarely featured as more than a bit-part player at Anfield.

This season, however, he wrote himself into club history with two memorable performances.

The Frenchman struck twice in the semi-final drubbing of Barcelona to secure Liverpool's place in the final; and on Saturday came off the bench to score his team's second when Tottenham threatened to level and take the game to extra time.

Of his seven goals in 2018-19, three came in the Champions League's decisive stages, a fact that left Origi over the moon."It's unbelievable. Winning a Champions League is so hard," he told TNT. "Today we're here, we pulled together with the team and supporters and we have to celebrate all together.

"I think we just did it as a team, we made a positive step forward. We kept improving ourselves and we used the experiences of the past for now.
"We have a good mix of talent and experienced players and today was just about enjoying it and we did."Victory also meant a first title at Liverpool for Jurgen Klopp, finally breaking the German's final jinx.

Klopp had finished runner-up in the competition twice with Dortmund and Liverpool, in 2012-13 and 2017-18, and had also tasted defeat in the 2015-16 Europa League and League Cup at the final hurdle.

"He fits perfectly in the values of the club. He's someone who loves the game, is a good man, and he pushes us," Origi said of his manager.

"Whenever we're tired we know that we have energy on the side, somebody who is going to push us, and he has a football brain as well."Also the fans. They also push us, they're special. Again... we did it all together, we needed every single person and we just have to enjoy this."

Liverpool have now won Europe's top competition on six occasions, with Saturday's triumph their second since the change from the European Cup name and format in 1992-93.

Mane promises to 'do everything' to add more trophies for Liverpool

Sadio Mane hinted at a Liverpool stay as he vowed to deliver more trophies for the club after winning the Champions League.A Mohamed Salah penalty and Divock Origi strike saw Liverpool overcome Tottenham 2-0 in the decider in Madrid on Saturday.

After helping the Premier League giants win a sixth European Cup/Champions League crown, Mane – who has been linked with Real Madrid – said the squad would push on.

"We have more things to come," he said, via the club's website."We will do everything to win [more] trophies with this squad."The star attacker added: "We are very proud and very happy to win this trophy. The dream has come true.

"I could not have anything better."Mane produced a good display in the final, but Liverpool needed some fine stops from goalkeeper Alisson to secure their win.

The Senegal international believes Brazil shot-stopper Alisson deserves to be recognised as the world's best."I can't describe how good Alisson was – I saw him make incredible saves for us," Mane said."We are very happy to have him in our squad. He makes us even better. For me he is the best in the world."

Liverpool's sixth crown has them double the next best total for any English side, and they became the first side since 2010 to win a Champions League final while having less of the ball than their opponent.

:(It will never be the same' - Man United will never recover Ferguson glory days, says Saha

Manchester United may find their way back to success sooner rather than later, but they will never be able to recapture the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign, according to former striker Louis Saha.

The Red Devils finished 32 points behind Premier League champions and rivals Manchester City this season following a muted campaign that saw Jose Mourinho unceremoniously sacked in December .

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the reins on an initially temporary basis and after steering United back into promising form – including a Champions League upset against Paris Saint-Germain – he was handed the job permanently.

However, the Norwegian was unable to prevent another late season slump and the club will be forced to contend in the Europa League in their next campaign after missing out on the top four .

Though all three managers between Ferguson and Solskjaer – David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Mourinho – lifted silverware during their spells in charge, both the Premier League and major European glory has eluded them.

Now, with a significant rebuild job on the cards throughout the off-season, former France international Saha says he believes that their current manager can help reverse fortunes – but that dreams of another halcyon period a la the Ferguson era is a thing of the past for good.

“I fully believe they will come back, but you need to understand that in football you might copy it, but it will never be the same," he was quoted in the Mirror “The element of surprise is gone, because you think, ‘Well, we’re expected to do this’. It’s a job.

“United have the back up of having the fans who will always be there so it’s a case of working hard - going back to basics. It’s been painful the last few years, but I’m certain Ole and his staff at the club will provide a really good base.”

Saha, who won played for the club between 2004 and 2008, was a three-time Premier League winner during his tenure, as well as a Champions League victor in 2008.

United begin their pre-season preparations next month with a trip to Australia , where they face A-League outfit Perth Glory and old rivals Leeds United at Optus Stadium.

Shaqiri silences Liverpool exit talk by airing title target

Xherdan Shaqiri has sought to end any talk of him considering a move away from Liverpool, with the Switzerland international taking aim at the Premier League title.

The 27-year-old was acquired by the Reds in the summer of 2018 after seeing a release clause in his contract at Stoke activated on the back of relegation out of the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp snapped him up with the intention of adding depth to his squad at Anfield and has used an enigmatic talent as a support option in the final third.Shaqiri has still managed to deliver six goals across 30 appearances and ended his debut campaign on Merseyside as a Champions League winner.

A lack of starts has sparked talk of supposed interest from the likes of West Ham, but the former Bayern and Inter star has shot down that speculation by telling reporters on the back of a 2-0 European Cup win over Tottenham: “Is this why I came to Liverpool? Yes.“This club needs to win titles, and it’s a good start to win this one, no? Now next year we are going to go again and try to win the Premier League.“That’s my big dream, to win the Premier League with this club.

“It just feels amazing. It’s been a long time since Liverpool won this title, 2005.“It’s amazing to give the fans what they deserve.“This club deserves everything, the staff, everyone involved. I think we’re going to have a big, big party!

“Of course if we didn’t win it, we’d have been very disappointed.“We played such a good season, and we deserved to win at least one trophy.“Now we won the biggest title in Europe, it’s amazing. It doesn’t happen every day.

“We are a very good team and we work hard together every day. I hope we can go on, this is just the start and we can win many more titles.”Shaqiri has accepted the role asked of him by Klopp in 2018-19.

With the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane filling wide attacking berths for the Reds, he is aware that he needs to be patient and make the most of any opportunities that do come his way.

‘Woodward has zero understanding of football!’ – Van Gaal tears into Man Utd’s executive vice-chairman

Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has slammed the club’s appointment of Ed Woodward, claiming the Red Devils’ executive vice-chairman has “zero understanding of football”.The Glazer family brought a divisive figure on board at Old Trafford when completing a big-money takeover in 2005.He has risen through the ranks and took on his current role in 2012 .

Questions have been asked of him on a regular basis over the course of the last seven years, with United having endured a humbling fall from grace since Sir Alex Ferguson headed into retirement.Van Gaal is among those to have been charged with the task of trying to deliver a reversal in fortune .

He lasted just two seasons in the dugout and believes part of the reason he struggled to convince in English football is because United have the wrong management structure in place.

The former Ajax, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Netherlands boss told 11 Freunde : “At Bayern, the people in charge are football men. I always appreciated that.“At Manchester United, on the other hand, Ed Woodward was installed as CEO - somebody with zero understanding of football who was previously an investment banker.

“It cannot be a good thing when a club is run solely from a commercially-driven perspective.”

Van Gaal was ousted from his role at Old Trafford on the back of an FA Cup triumph in the summer of 2016.He was ushered through the exits in order to make way for the arrival of Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman has never made any secret of his disappointment at how his departure was handled, but has further questions of United after seeing his successor manage just two-and-a-half years before heading the same way as he did.

Van Gaal added: “I don't hold it against the club. They wanted Mourinho and he was on the market.“Appointing him was obviously interesting from a business point of vie.

“He wins games and for a club like United, the main thing is to win trophies. How they are won isn't the main priority, the English fans see it differently.“They accept that the game is not all about attacking but it is also about defending. I always tried to defend high up the pitch, to be in the opposition's half and play the game there.”

Mourinho delivered Community Shield, Carabao Cup and Europa League successes in his debut campaign with United, but was relieved of his duties in December 2018 as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returned to Old Trafford.

Arsenal defender Lichtsteiner confirms Gunners departure

Stephan Lichtsteiner has confirmed he is leaving Arsenal after just one season at the Emirates Stadium.

The 35-year-old became Unai Emery's first signing as Arsenal manager when he joined the Gunners on a free transfer from Juventus last summer, going on to make 23 appearances in all competitions. The former Lille and Lazio defender was mainly used as a back-up, with the majority of his starts coming in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions.

A season-ending injury to Hector Bellerin in January presented Lichtsteiner with a first-team opportunity but he ended the campaign behind Shkodran Mustafi and Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the pecking order, starting just two of the Gunners' final 18 games.

He was an unused substitute in the club's final match of the campaign, a 4-1 thrashing by Chelsea in the Europa League final that not only ended their hopes of silverware but also of Champions League football next season after a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.

In a message posted on Instagram the Switzerland international thanked the fans, his team-mates and club staff while expressing his disappointment at their Europa League final defeat in Baku.

"Dear Gunners, we were close to add an important chapter to this amazing club’s history. But to be close is unfortunately not good enough. This is hard to accept," said Lichtsteiner.

"I’m very disappointed. It was our objective to bring Arsenal back on the highest international level and to win trophies. Both belong to this great club. I wish my teammates, my coach and his staff, all hard-working employees and all Gunner fans simply the best!

"I’m confident our team can complete our mission next season! I loved to be a part of this club. ‘It was a great challenge and experience without a happy end, unfortunately. Thank you very much for your overwhelming support! It was much appreciated!"

He becomes the fourth high-profile player to confirm their departure from Arsenal this summer, with Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck both also leaving on free transfers while Petr Cech has retired.Lichtsteiner began his career at Grasshoppers Zurich in 2001 and had spells at Lille and Lazio before joining Juventus in 2011.

He would go on to make more than 250 appearances for the Bianconeri winning 14 major honours, including seven successive Serie A titles.

'Logically, one option is better than another' - De Ligt hints at future decision amid Man Utd & Barca links

Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt has hinted he is close to making a final decision regarding his future, with Manchester United and Barcelona keeping a close eye on his situation.

The 19-year-old enjoyed a superb 2018-19 campaign, earning widespread acclaim for his performances in 55 matches across all competitions.

The Netherlands international helped Erik ten Hag's side win both the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup, while also playing a key role during their run to the Champions League semi-finals.

Ajax were knocked out of the competition in stunning fashion by Tottenham, but De Ligt was one of several stars in the squad to attract interest from a number of top European clubs with his displays on the biggest stage.United and Barcelona are thought to be leading the chase for the teenager's signature, with Italian giants Juventus are also eyeing a potential swoop.

De Ligt has given the biggest indication yet that he could leave Ajax in the coming weeks, admitting that he is thinking carefully in order to choose the "best" possible option.

"I am very excited about what could happen in the near future," he told RTL4. "I am also trying to stay calm, though."I view this as a challenge -- that is the most important thing. There are several options and I really want to pick the best one. Logically, one option is better than another.

"Life abroad could be difficult, but I am still an ordinary Dutch guy -- I am no different to the others. Perhaps living abroad will be more intense for me."

The Dutchman is contracted to remain at the Johan Cruyff ArenA until 2021 and he has already stated it's possible he will remain in Amsterdam for at least one more year.
However, the long list of potential suitors vying for De Ligt's services continues to grow with each passing week and Ajax may be tempted to cash in on a prized asset if a suitable bid is forthcoming.

Barcelona already managed to land one of the club's young stars in January, with Frenkie de Jong due to arrive at Camp Nou this month after agreeing on a €75 million (£65m/$85m) move.

De Ligt's proposed switch could also be held up by his agent Mino Raiola's legal woes after the Italian was hit with a three-month worldwide transfer ban in May.
