Granada 2-0 Barcelona: Away woes continue for LaLiga champions

    18766220-0-image-a-64_1569094717468.jpg

Granada shocked Barcelona 2-0 in LaLiga to increase the pressure on Ernesto Valverde, who has overseen the Blaugrana's worst start to the season since 1994-95.

Diego Martinez's side had won their past two league games and led in the second minute, Ramon Azeez heading in at the back post, and they made it 2-0 from the penalty spot.

Arturo Vidal was penalised for handball after a VAR check and Alvaro Vadillo sent Marc-Andre ter Stegen the wrong way to leave Barca, who brought Lionel Messi and Ansu Fati on at half-time, with a mountain to climb.

Barca are winless in seven away games in all competitions and struggling in seventh, while promoted Granada are the shock league leaders after their third straight clean sheet.

Junior Firpo was making his first LaLiga start for Barcelona but he made two errors as Granada took the lead with 63 seconds on the clock.Antonio Puertas profited on Junior's twin mistakes to race clear and deliver a low cross that ballooned over Ter Stegen via a deflection off Gerard Pique for Azeez to nod home.

Luis Suarez hit a free-kick into the wall as Barca tried to strike back, but they ended the first half without recording a shot on target. After Messi came on at half-time, Barca almost gifted Granada a second. Ter Stegen carelessly dropped a cross, the goalkeeper recovering in time to beat Roberto Soldado to the loose ball.

Granada doubled their lead in the 66th minute, Arturo Vidal conceding a penalty shortly after replacing Ivan Rakitic, with Vadillo beating Ter Stegen from the spot.

Despite Messi and Fati adding zest to their attack, Barca still could not find a way through, the captain forcing Rui Silva into his first save with eight minutes to play.

AC Milan 0-2 Inter: Romelu Lukaku header seals deserved derby triumph

    18768516-7489897-image-a-35_1569098663054.jpg

Marcelo Brozovic and Romelu Lukaku struck as Inter continued their 100 per cent start to the Serie A season and extended a strong recent record in derbies against city rivals AC Milan with a 2-0 victory.A deflected strike from Brozovic four minutes into the second half and a late clincher from Lukaku settled a contest that Antonio Conte's men always looked likely to win.

Milan, the designated home team at the shared San Siro, only produced one shot on target and were comfortably kept at arm's length by Inter after the opening goal.

The Rossoneri have now lost two of their first four games under coach Marco Giampaolo and failed to beat Inter in seven consecutive league derbies.

The first big chance came when Lautaro Martinez slipped Lukaku through on goal, the Belgium striker's right-footed shot forcing a one-handed save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

A better opportunity arrived in the 21st minute, but Danilo D'Ambrosio could somehow only hit the post from four yards on the rebound after Donnarumma made a reaction save from Martinez, the opening created by Stefano Sensi's clever cut-back.

Inter almost paid the price for those misses when Hakan Calhanoglu found the net, but the goal was disallowed because Kwadwo Asamoah's poor clearance was adjudged to have struck the arm of Franck Kessie on his 100th Milan appearance.D'Ambrosio thought he had made amends with a stunning overhead kick which was somehow saved by Donnarumma and tucked in by Martinez on the rebound, but an offside flag halted the move.

Inter broke through after the break, Brozovic's strike from the edge of the area taking a wicked deflection off Rafael Leao to beat Donnarumma after Sensi's lay-off.And the win was sealed 12 minutes from time with Lukaku guiding a well-judged header into the far corner from Nicolo Barella's left-wing cross.

Matteo Politano's late curler struck the crossbar and Antonio Candreva's deflected shot bounced off the inside of the post as Inter threatened a third, with Milan left to reflect on a forgettable performance that also saw Theo Hernandez strike the woodwork in the closing minutes.

Manchester City 8-0 Watford: Bernardo Silva hits hat-trick in record rout

    18760834-7489259-Bernardo_Silva_celebrates_with_the_fans_after_getting_his_hat_tr-a-79_1569100850750.jpg

Manchester City returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a stunning 8-0 triumph over sorry Watford to record their biggest ever top-flight victory at the Etihad Stadium.Pep Guardiola's side slipped to a shock defeat at Norwich City last weekend but responded in spectacular fashion against the league's bottom side, racing into a five-goal lead inside 18 minutes.

David Silva got them on their way after 52 seconds before a Sergio Aguero penalty and goals from Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Nicolas Otamendi put the game out of the sight before the midway point of the first half.

Bernardo Silva grabbed the first top-flight hat-trick of his career with goals in the 48th and 60th minutes before Kevin De Bruyne added an eighth five minutes from time.

The result moves City two points behind Liverpool at the Premier League's summit – though the Reds have a game in hand - while Watford remain rooted to the foot of the table with just two points from their opening six games.

City started in blistering fashion, taking the lead inside the opening minute when David Silva slotted home De Bruyne's wonderful cross from the right.
Ederson denied Gerard Deulofeu moments later before Ben Foster rashly brought down Mahrez in the penalty area, giving Aguero the opportunity to slam home his 100th Premier League goal at the Etihad Stadium from the resulting spot-kick.

Their third came after just 12 minutes when Mahrez's free-kick from the edge of the area beat Foster courtesy of a significant deflection off Tom Cleverley.
Bernardo Silva added a fourth just three minutes later, stooping to head home a corner from eight yards, while Otamendi made it five in the 18th minute, turning home Aguero's low cross at the back post.City's intensity dropped a little after that devastating opening, although Aguero came close to registering a hat-trick before the interval, the Argentina international twice denied by the post.

The hosts wasted little time making it six after the restart, Bernardo Silva slotting past a helpless Foster from 10 yards after collecting David Silva's pass.

Aguero twice came close to adding a seventh before Bernardo Silva brought up his hat-trick on the hour mark, prodding home De Bruyne's cross from close range at the back post.

Mahrez then saw a header cannon back off the crossbar before De Bruyne capped a superb individual display with a rising drive from 16 yards that gave a beleaguered Foster no chance.

Juventus 2-1 Hellas Verona: Ramsey nets on full debut as champions fight back

    18762968-0-image-a-27_1569084404827.jpg

Aaron Ramsey marked his full debut with a goal and Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty as Juventus came from behind to beat Hellas Verona 2-1 in Saturday's Serie A clash at the Allianz Stadium.

The Italian champions handed first starts of the season to four players and trailed 1-0 to a fine Miguel Veloso strike before Ramsey got off the mark for his new club

Ronaldo scored the winner from the penalty spot early in the second half as Juve, who were held by Fiorentina last weekend and squandered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Atletico Madrid in midweek, returned to winning ways in Turin against opponents who finished with 10 men due to Marash Kumbulla's injury-time dismissal.

The victory lifts Juventus to the top of Serie A - albeit with the champions having played a game more than the chasing pack - and it was a particularly special one for Gianluigi Buffon, who equalled Paolo Maldini's record of 902 club appearances with his rare start.

Yet it could have turned out differently for Buffon as Verona were gifted a penalty 19 minutes in when Merih Demiral fouled Samuel Di Carmine inside the box.

Di Carmine slammed the penalty against the foot of the post and Darko Lazovic picked out the crossbar from the follow-up, but the ball was in the net 13 seconds later through Veloso's unstoppable drive into the top-left corner.Juventus had scored in their previous 12 home league meetings with Verona, however, and they were soon on level terms through Ramsey's deflected shot from 25 yards.

The hosts moved in front inside four minutes of the second period as Koray Gunter needlessly challenged Juan Cuadrado and Ronaldo thumped the resulting penalty down the middle.

Buffon produced a brilliant stop to deny Lazovic in the final minute, but Verona's hopes of snatching a point were effectively ended when Kumbulla tripped Blaise Matuidi and was shown a second yellow in added time.

:(:(:(West Ham 2-0 Manchester United: Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Cresswell sink lacklustre visitors

    18786736-7491415-image-m-51_1569162188726.jpg

The Hammers went after the visitors from the off and were rewarded with a deserved lead as Yarmolenko struck a half-volley past a diving David de Gea on the stroke of half-time after some fine one-touch football.

While United started the second half brightly, an injury to Marcus Rashford stunted hopes of a comeback that were put fully to rest when Cresswell scored a wonderful free-kick five minutes from time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side went home with nothing except a longer injury list, while Manuel Pellegrini's men celebrated their third win of the season.

United's depleted frontline struggled to deal with a physical West Ham defence that nullified the marauding runs of Daniel James and Rashford, harrying the forwards into corners, giving them little time or space.

While the visitors rushed their attacks and gave possession away freely, West Ham's attacking triumvirate were patient in the final third, looking for gaps in their opponent's backline and using the excellent Mark Noble as an anchor in midfield when they needed to go backwards.

Their best piece of football was rewarded when Noble found Felipe Anderson on the edge of the box, the Brazilian playing a wonderful first-time ball into Yarmolenko as he ran into the box, the Ukrainian taking one touch for control before rifling past De Gea.

The visitors made a much better start to the second half and should have gone level when Juan Mata missed a glorious opportunity with the goal gaping, only to divert Andreas Pereira's excellent cross a yard wide and into the stands.

But United were dealt another huge blow when Rashford pulled up injured in the box and was immediately replaced by Jesse Lingard, leaving a tired side without a recognised striker on the pitch.Five minutes from time, left-back Cresswell put Solskjaer's men out of their misery with a wonderful free-kick from 25 yards, bending the ball beyond the reach of De Gea for a West Ham win and all three points.

:('I don't know where to start' - Ex-Man Utd captain Keane 'shocked and saddened' by West Ham capitulation

Manchester United's 2-0 defeat at West Ham has prompted a furious response from Roy Keane, who admitted he was "shocked and saddened" by the state of his former club.

After suffering a horrendous downturn in form at the end of the 2018-19 season following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's permanent appointment, the Red Devils were hopeful that a new-look, youthful side would turn the corner this time round.

The opening weekend of the Premier League seemed to confirm those hopes, as Chelsea were dismantled in a 4-0 win at Old Trafford which featured three scorers, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and debutant Daniel James, who were aged 23 or under.

United, though, were quickly brought back down to earth after that early success, taking just one win in their following four league outings.
And West Ham inflicted another rude awakening on Solskjaer's men on Sunday as they ran out 2-0 winners in London thanks to goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Cresswell .

The Red Devils could drop as low as ninth in the table by the end of the day depending on later results, and Keane believes that it is just not good enough for a team of their stature.

"I tell you, I don’t know where to start," the former Republic of Ireland international, captain and symbol of the team during United's glory years under Sir Alex Ferguson, fired to Sky Sports."I have to say, I knew they weren’t in a great place but I’m shocked and saddened by how bad they were today."

Keane added that it was not so much the scoreline against the Hammers but rather the manner of defeat that proved the increasing malaise around Old Trafford."I know you can lose a game of football but everything about the game, about United [was] lacklustre, no quality, lack of desire, lack of leaders, lack of characters," he stated.

"It’s a long way back for United. It’s scary how far they’ve fallen."Solskjaer's charges will be back in action on Wednesday with a home Carabao Cup tie against Rochdale. They then return to Old Trafford on September 30, when they host Arsenal in the Premier League.

Everton 1-3 Manchester City: Mahrez stunner saves champions

    19050792-7515863-image-a-131_1569695298885.jpg

Riyad Mahrez's free-kick and Raheem Sterling's late strike earned Manchester City a hard-fought 3-1 Premier League win at Everton.Liverpool's 1-0 victory at Sheffield United earlier in the day extended their 100 per cent start to the season and moved the Reds eight points clear of City at the top of the table.

After Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fourth goal in three matches drew Marco Silva's men level following Gabriel Jesus' opener, it looked like City would follow their last away game, a 3-2 loss at Norwich City, with another disappointing result on the road.

But Mahrez, who has scored in three consecutive City starts, beat Jordan Pickford with a low curling free-kick and Sterling added gloss to bring the champions back to five points adrift of Jurgen Klopp's leaders.
Mahrez forced a first-minute save from Pickford before a long delay as medics tended to a Theo Walcott head injury, the winger taken to hospital for a precautionary assessment after being replaced by Alex Iwobi.Algeria star Mahrez made a lively start and Ilkay Gundogan should have converted his excellent cross, the midfielder somehow crashing his shot against the crossbar from virtually on the line.

City's dominance told in the 24th minute, Kevin De Bruyne delivering a first-time cross that was impossible to defend, with Jesus - preferred to Sergio Aguero up front - stooping to nod home.

Everton levelled within 10 minutes, Fernandinho's error contributing as Seamus Coleman chipped Ederson, with Calvert-Lewin stealing the goal on the line.De Bruyne hit a shot into the side-netting after the restart while Ederson made a fine save to keep out Yerry Mina's downward header.

Mahrez's rich vein of form crucially continued with a set-piece that beat an unsighted Pickford, then two missed chances from Calvert-Lewin proved costly as Sterling marked his 200th City appearance by scoring off the underside of the crossbar with six minutes to go.

Sampdoria 1-3 Inter: Alexis Sanchez scores and gets sent off in eventful full debut

    19049240-7515661-image-a-59_1569691889453.jpg

Alexis Sanchez scored before being sent off in a dramatic first Inter start as his side battled to a 3-1 away win over Sampdoria.Inter made it six victories from six in Serie A, ensuring they kept the two-point lead over Juventus at the top of the table that they held at the start of Saturday.

Two goals in the space of 128 first-half seconds from Stefano Sensi and Sanchez had Antonio Conte's men on course for a dominant victory in response to Juve's earlier win over SPAL.

Sanchez received a second yellow for diving early in the second half and there was brief alarm for 10-man Inter when that was followed by a strike from Samp's Jakub Jankto, but Roberto Gagliardini wrapped up the points.
After a scrappy opening 20 minutes, Inter scored two goals in rapid succession.First, in-form Sensi fired in an effort from 30 yards which struck Sanchez on the back and deflected past Emil Audero in the Sampdoria goal.

Then, on Inter's next attack, another Sensi strike that was hit less cleanly was latched on to by an opportunistic Sanchez, who knew more about this one as he pounced to slot in from inside the six-yard box.Antonio Candreva's goal from a Sanchez chipped pass was ruled out for offside before Lautaro Martinez fired wide from one good chance and struck another straight at the keeper.

Audero denied Sensi as Inter ended the first half in complete control but the match took a dramatic twist 54 seconds after the restart. When a Martinez shot was saved, Sanchez went down under pressure from Julian Chabot, who appeared to back out of the challenge.

That immediately earned Sanchez a second booking – his first having come just before the break for a foul on Albin Ekdal.Samp's first shot on target got them back into the match, Jankto collecting a pass from Karol Linetty before turning and finding the bottom corner with an angled left-footed strike – his first league goal for the club.

But just after the hour mark – six minutes after Jankto's strike - weak goalkeeping from Audero meant Marcelo Brozovic's over-hit pass was eventually parried into the path of Gagliardini to tap in.

Bordeaux 0-1 Paris Saint-Germain: Mbappe sets up Neymar winner on return

    19049040-7515713-image-m-70_1569691526995.jpg

Kylian Mbappe marked his return from injury by teeing up Neymar for the only goal of the game as Paris Saint-Germain got back to winning ways in Ligue 1 with a 1-0 triumph at Bordeaux.

Mbappe had not featured since August 25 because of a muscle problem but came off the bench in the second half to make a telling impact for the defending champions. The France forward was introduced on the hour mark and 10 minutes later he laid on a close-range winner for Neymar.

Victory for Thomas Tuchel's men sees them go two points clear at the top of the table, though surprise package Angers can go back level with them at the summit by beating Amiens.
Pablo Sarabia saw a goal ruled out for offside in the ninth minute, and a frustrating first half for the visitors - beaten at home by Reims in midweek - featured a booking for coach Tuchel after he expressed his disdain at a free-kick given to Bordeaux. His side dominated throughout and Thomas Meunier dragged an effort wide before Angel Di Maria and Neymar were each denied by Benoit Costil in quick succession.

Neymar then headed wide after more good work down the right from Meunier, with PSG's profligacy forcing Tuchel's hand as Mbappe was summoned to join the action. He wasted an early opportunity too, shooting straight at Costil, before Neymar sent another header off target at the far post with the goal at his mercy.

Yet PSG's persistence was finally rewarded when Pablo carelessly lost the ball in his own half and Mbappe broke free down the right, firing a low cross in for Neymar to tuck into the bottom-left corner.

Mbappe's cameo was arguably worthy of a goal but Costil kept his team in it with another fine save after a break from the World Cup winner, who blasted over the bar shortly after on a day when PSG should have won by a much more convincing margin.

There was controversy late on, though, as Bordeaux had an appeal for a penalty rejected by VAR despite Idrissa Gueye appearing to make contact with Loris Benito, but a point for the hosts would have been scarcely deserved.

Getafe 0-2 Barcelona: Suarez and Junior fire Valverde's men to welcome win

    19045850-7515341-image-a-29_1569682562708.jpg

Luis Suarez set Barcelona on their way to a first away victory of the LaLiga season as they won 2-0 at Getafe on Saturday.

Forget the often hare-brained defending from the Catalan giants, Barcelona got what they came for: three points safely accrued ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash with Inter.

For coach Ernesto Valverde, the pressure eases just a little, and the fact they notched this victory without Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele, both sidelined with thigh injuries, is another source of encouragement.

Suarez lobbed in the 41st-minute opener, and Junior Firpo tucked in Barcelona's second from close range early in the second half for his first goal for the club.Getafe spurned first-half chances they might have gobbled up on another day and Clement Lenglet's 84th-minute dismissal for two yellow cards came too late to give them any real advantage.

Valverde fielded a front three of Carles Perez, Suarez and Antoine Griezmann. The game largely passed Griezmann by, not for the first time since his summer switch from Atletico Madrid.Getafe were unbeaten in their last eight home LaLiga matches; however, Barcelona had won on 10 of their 14 previous visits to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez in LaLiga, more than any other visiting side.

Perez tested David Soria in the Getafe goal early on, before Suarez stabbed a shot wide following a smart throughball from Frenkie de Jong.Barcelona's defence was then picked apart too easily, with Angel allowed space to shoot from six yards, his strike blocked by the legs of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Jaime Mata had a close-range effort deflect wide off Junior at the other, with Barcelona increasingly shambolic at the back. Inter will have taken encouragement.

But Suarez pounced to give Barcelona a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute when a clearance from Ter Stegen turned into a great long ball for the Uruguayan striker to chase, and he lobbed Soria in style.Soria was culpable for Barcelona's second four minutes into the second half, as he could only push a 25-yard shot from Perez back into play, and Junior had an easy finish.

Suarez and Perez almost added to the lead, while Arthur nearly fired past Soria into an empty net after the goalkeeper went walkabout, but two was enough.

Chelsea 2-0 Brighton and Hove Albion: Lampard off the mark with first home Premier League win

    19046880-7515277-Stamford_Bridges_masses_were_given_something_to_smile_about_agai-a-2_1569691575900.jpg

A Jorginho penalty and a deflected strike from Willian earned Chelsea their first home Premier League win under Frank Lampard as they beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 on Saturday.

Lampard's men had drawn two and lost one of their opening three matches at Stamford Bridge this term, but they deservedly got off the mark on this occasion.Brighton, now beaten in all nine of their league meetings with Chelsea, survived an onslaught on their goal in the first half but Adam Webster gifted the Blues a spot-kick early in the second half.

Jorginho converted from 12 yards after Webster had brought down Mason Mount, who pounced on the defender's heavy first touch in the box, while Willian added a second 14 minutes from time to send Chelsea up to sixth in the table.
Tammy Abraham was unable to make any contact with Mount's inswinging free-kick in a first half dominated by Chelsea, the ball going right through and coming back off the post.

Mat Ryan was equal to shots from Ross Barkley and Pedro, who both should have been doing better with just the Brighton keeper to beat, while Marcos Alonso volleyed wide from close range shortly before the interval.

Chelsea's much-merited breakthrough goal arrived five minutes into the second half, however, as Webster brought down Mount and Jorginho sent the penalty into the bottom-left corner - the 100th to be scored at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.Ryan temporarily kept Brighton in the match by producing good saves to deny Pedro and Abraham, who was played in by a poor pass from opposition midfielder Dale Stephens.

However, Willian sealed victory for Chelsea, powering an effort past Ryan via a deflection off Dan Burn - who had just grazed the bar with a header from a corner at the other end.

Tottenham 2-1 Southampton: Spurs prevail despite Lloris clanger and Aurier red card

    19046708-7515369-Tanguy_Ndombele_fired_Tottenham_in_front_with_a_left_foot_shot_f-a-1_1569695136170.jpg

Harry Kane got the winning goal as Tottenham eased the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino with a 2-1 win over Southampton, despite an awful Hugo Lloris error and Serge Aurier's first-half dismissal.

Spurs' underwhelming start to the season took a turn for the worse with Tuesday's EFL Cup elimination by League Two's Colchester United, exacerbating the aura of frustration at the club. But they showed admirable character to see off Saints in tricky circumstances.

Tanguy Ndombele's opener was soon forgotten when Serge Aurier's sending off for two bookings was followed by a diabolical Lloris mistake that gifted Danny Ings an equaliser.

But Kane converted after a devastating break at the end of the first half and 10-man Spurs managed to hold on in the face of intense pressure after the break, with Lloris making a couple of fine saves to go some way to making up for his earlier calamity.

It was not a match synonymous with displays of fine goalkeeping, as the hosts opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Angus Gunn let Ndombele's left-footed strike from the edge of the box in despite it being almost straight at him.

Lloris then contrived to take the focus away from everyone else 15 minutes later, comically failing to clear under pressure from Ings, who bundled over the line after the goalkeeper's attempted 'Cruyff turn'.

That came shortly after Aurier was dismissed for two bookings – the second for a cynical tug on Ryan Bertrand – in quick succession, but Spurs still went into the break ahead.Son Heung-min, Christian Eriksen and Kane linked on a breath-taking counter and the latter finished into the bottom-left corner.

Lloris went some way to restoring a semblance of authority in the second half with two wonderful stops to deny James Ward-Prowse's long-range free-kick and then a Maya Yoshida header as Spurs held on.

Miralem Pjanic's stunning effort and a late header from Cristiano Ronaldo saw Juventus move top of Serie A with a 2-0 victory over struggling SPAL.Juve dominated throughout Saturday's encounter in Turin, but they found visiting goalkeeper Etrit Berisha in fine form.It took a sublime strike from Pjanic to beat him - the playmaker breaking SPAL's resistance with a wonderful effort in the 45th minute.

Having been denied by Berisha once more just after the hour, Ronaldo finally had his goal with 12 minutes remaining, heading home from Paulo Dybala's pinpoint cross to cap off a dominant Juve performance.

On his return after missing the victory over Brescia, Ronaldo had Juve's first sight of goal, drawing a smart stop from Berisha.Ronaldo did beat Berisha in the 19th minute, but his deflected effort crept wide of the right-hand upright.

Berisha soon came to SPAL's rescue twice more, tipping Dybala's strike wide before he brilliantly kept out Aaron Ramsey's close-range header. But his work was undone on the stroke of half-time - Pjanic curling home an exceptional first-time finish from the edge of the area after SPAL's goalkeeper mistakenly elected to punch, rather than catch, a cross.

Berisha made another outstanding stop early in the second half - this time getting down to repel Sami Khedira's header.Dybala and Ronaldo tested Berisha in quick succession as Juve looked to press home their dominance, though it was not until the duo combined that the hosts finally had their second.

Having raced clear down the left, Dybala picked out his strike partner with an exquisite delivery from which Ronaldo made no mistake, though there was still time for Berisha to make a final stop to prevent the Portugal forward doubling his tally in the final minute.
