Here is summery of the revolution of fuel injection system in automobiles
Read the thread about "4 stroke engines" for better understanding this

    • Fuel injection is a system for admitting fuel into an internal combustion engine

    • Almost all the diesel engines use that fuel injection

    But in petrol engines,

In old petrol engines used Carburetor which relies on suction created by intake air accelerated through a Venturi tube to draw the fuel into the airstream

In new petrol engines use fuel injection which atomizes the fuel by forcibly pumping it through a small nozzle under high pressure

It has become the primary fuel delivery system used in automotive engines, having replaced carburetors during the 1980s and 1990s

There are few advantages of fuel injection system over the carburetor system

    • Power output
    • Fuel efficiency
    • Emissions performance
    • Ability to accommodate alternative fuels
    • Reliability
    • Driveability and smooth operation
    • Initial cost
    • Maintenance cost
    • Diagnostic capability
    • Range of environmental operation
    • Engine tuning

There are two main categories in fuel injection in petrol engines. They are

    1. Mechanical injection -old version
    2. Electronic injection (EFI) -new version (talk about this later..)

    • In the 1970s and 1980s in the US and Japan, the respective federal governments imposed increasingly strict exhaust emission regulations

    • Automobile manufacturers began installing fuel injection systems in more gasoline/petrol engines during the late 1970s

    • Since the early 1990s, almost all gasoline passenger cars sold in first world markets are equipped with electronic fuel injection (EFI)

    • Carburetor remains in use in developing countries where vehicle emissions are unregulated and diagnostic and repair infrastructure is sparse

Various injection systems (talk about this later..)

    • Single-point injection
    • Continuous injection
    • Central port injection
    • Multiport fuel injection
    • Direct injection
    • Swirl injection
