Gas companies say that they expect a price increase with effect from June 30th. Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority Rumy Marsook has told the media that a price revision could take place in accordance with the pricing formula. Noting that a metric ton of gas in the world market was priced at $812 in April and $ 856.50 in May, the gas companies have requested to up gas prices as the current crude oil price is $ 912.50.
They have also requested that shipping fees too should be considered for the increase, he added.
Presently, the price of a Shell domestic gas cylinder of 12.5 kg is priced at Rs. 1729 while a Laugfs gas cylinder costs Rs. 1,721.

Lanka Indian Oil Company has decided to reduce its selling price of diesel by Rs. 10 per litre from midnight tomorrow (June 24th). Its new price of Rs. 120 will still be Rs. 10 higher than the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation's price, with both effecting two price increases within last month.
Of late, Lanka IOC has been accused of focusing on the more profitable petrol sales.
Speaking in parliament, Petroleum Minister A.H.M. Fowzie warned that the company's filling stations would be taken over if there was no immediate reduction in the diesel price.
Commenting on this, a senior official of Lanka IOC said that as per its agreement with the government, it has permission to take decisions on its profitability, or otherwise there should be a fuel subsidy.
