the guides u linked above are very good, but they are aimed at specific cards namely 8800 family, i tried to do it so it covers the whole geforce 8 familly, cuz most of the SL people dont have a 8800 series cards, anyways they are a good read for anyone.

infact i have...use ur eyes to pick up artifacts, use crysis(this one can really push ur card to the limit) and 3dmark 6 to do stress testing, and obviousely i have mentioned abt cooling, for this guide ur on ur own with the stock cooler,

no Geforce 8 gpus are very temp tolerant and only start to take damage arround 125C (so its not easy to fry these chips) this guide assume that u have a stock cooler and its working properly, so ur OC is limited by ur cooling if u have a sucky stock cooler.

Edit : the tool u have mentioned for artifact testing is quite good...but it cant push a high end geforce 8 card to the limits (the tool is very old last version in 2003), for low end cards this too will be usefull..thanks for the reminder
Using your eyes as a artifact tests is dumb. You better use a software for that. I could easily overclock VRAM past 1100MHz without "seeing" any artifacts, but ATITool could pick artifacts past 1060MHz.

man! u gotta have balls to do O/Cing,dont jst keep reading things try 'em out also,BTW a little increase in Core clock or Memory clock won't hurt modern VGA cards at all,for an instance my Inno3D 8600GT's core even runs at 710MHz stably (540MHz stock)-but since my PSU is crap i had to reduce O/C

Well, it NEVER said NO artifacts when I SAW artifacts. But it said there were artifacts, when I couldn't see them. I'd believe the "machine" :P (Can you see an incorrect pixel thru your eyes?? :P)

    ATITOOL is seeing things :P
It doesn't "see" things. I knows things. :P
(If this is wrong, it is safe to say Prime95 is crap too, because it is the same thing: compare a calculated value with a known value)

OK u won..loool..everyone please also use (give more priority to ur eyes tho) ATITOOL for artifact testing, altho its last version is 2 years old and its known to be wrong on some cases at detecting artifacts.:P

yes.very true it doesn't detect some newer cards correctly:(

yeap thats the problem with it, i loved that tool when i had a Radeon 9700pro some 5 years ago, they dont update it anymore so it wont detect newer video cars correctly

That's mainly intended for ATI. Not for smelly nVidia

BTW,u can do the O/Cing using RivaTuner and stress test it using nTune:P
iirc there is an option called automatic tuning in nTune

dont use ntune's automatic over clocking utility NEVER, it is horribly wrong, for an example once i oced ma card with it and the system was giving me Bsods every 5 minutes but still the ntunes stabilty testing utility was reporting my card is very stable loooool
