Serious doubts are now emerging regarding the letter to his Commander-in-Chief President Mahinda Rajapaksa by Chief of Defence Staff General Fonseka, requesting that he be permitted to relinquish office.
The full text of the letter reportedly sent by Gen. Fonseka was published by a website, which sources say was even before the President had read it. While the ‘confidential’ letter was already becoming ‘un-confidential’, the announcement that the General had handed in his letter of resignation was announced to the media by UNP Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake.
However, now political circles are questioning as to whether this letter was drafted in consultation with the opposition alliance or whether it was done by the General himself. The much publicized letter had some political overtures as well, sources say.
Today, sections of the media have highlighted that the actual letter sent by General Fonseka to the President was not the one that was ‘leaked’ to the media. The published letter and the actual letter contain several differences, they claim. Examples are the mention of the freedom of the press and the IDP issues among others.
This deletion and/or alterations as claimed, if true, has troubled some seniors in the main constituent party of the opposition alliance, sources say. They had reportedly queried as to how the original contents were changed without any consultations if the letter had been drafted in consultation.
Meanwhile, sources say that the President’s office which informed the media that the General’s letter of resignation had been accepted is now in the process of formulating a detailed reply to the contents of the actual letter sent by General Fonseka to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
