Chief of Defense Staff Gen. Sarath Fonseka intends resigning from all posts he holds in the government and enter politics states a very reliable source. This source states Gen. Fonseka would take a decisive step towards this in the very near future.
Gen. Fonseka first gave an indication that he was entering political process during his visit to the USA. During his visit he said, “People like me would have to cast away the uniform in the future. In such a situation I would not hesitate to take any step for the protection of the country. It is the duty of any citizen to take what ever step for the development and protection of the Motherland. What should be done is not to waste time bragging about the victory but to be alert regarding what would happen in the future.”
Throughout past months there was a vast contradiction developing between Gen. Fonseka and the government and at times this burst out into the open. Ministers of the government openly criticized Gen. Fonseka. When the authorities in the USA attempted to question Gen. Fonseka what the government did was not to mediate diplomatically but to threaten him stating he had no right to reveal any information regarding the war. However, Gen. Fonseka refused to take part in any interview thwarting the attempt of the US government. However, later it was revealed that Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse had taken part in such an interview.
