    Hi!

    Happy Women's Day!

    How does gender influence in BMI? Look at this BMI calculator, and it calculate just based on height and weight. Also, there some calculation methods?

    John's weight is 88 kg and height is 172.5 cm (5 feet 8 inch). To calculate his BMI, we can divide his weight by his height squared and the result is 29.57. Formula: 88 kg / (172.5 cm) ^2 = 29.57.

    Also, BMI differ between age 2 - 19.

    Does age consider?

    So, what are the calculation methods as per gender, age and age group 2-19??

    I hope to get clear answer. Thanks

    BMI (Body Mass Index) is a measure of body fat based on a person's weight and height. However, gender and age can also influence BMI measurements.

    Research shows that on average, men have more muscle mass and less body fat than women, which can affect their BMI. Therefore, gender-specific BMI calculations are recommended. Additionally, BMI values can also vary by age, especially in children and adolescents as they grow and develop at different rates.

    The formula to calculate BMI for adults (18 years and older) is:

    BMI = weight (kg) / (height (m))^2

    For children and adolescents (ages 2 to 19), BMI is calculated differently using age- and gender-specific percentile charts, as their BMI values change with age due to growth and development.

    There are several different formulas for calculating BMI for children and adolescents, including:

    CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) Method:
    BMI = (weight (kg) / (height (m))^2) x 10,000

    The resulting BMI value is then plotted on a BMI-for-age percentile chart to determine the child's BMI percentile.

    IOTF (International Obesity Task Force) Method:
    BMI = (1.3 x weight (kg)) / (height (m))^2.5

    The resulting BMI value is then compared to age- and gender-specific cut-off points to determine whether the child is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

    It is important to note that BMI is just one tool used to assess weight status and does not take into account other factors such as muscle mass or body composition. It is recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation of one's weight status.

    The BMI is just a crude indicator. Some say it's really flawed. Age , Gender and some otherfactors are taken into account by the so called SmartBMI calculators.
    eg: https://www.smartbmicalculator.com/

    Still it's not accurate. Because a BMI can’t differentiate fat mass from lean mass, or subcutaneous fat from visceral fat. You need MRI/CT for that kind of accuracy.

    Some others are of the opinion that the Waist-to-Hip Ratio is a better indicator than a BMI. There's a WHO Expert Consultative Report on it. (Check WHO Site) There are waist-to-hip calculators on the Net,
    Whatever the case maybe, (Waist-to-Hip or BMI), the expert opinion is using just one formula is not enough to get a sense of how a person’s weight could be affecting their health. :oo:

    When categorising adults according to their BMI and prescribing targets, we do not consider age or gender. However, for Asians, there are a bit different targets. Below link will give you an idea about that.

    https://tieuduongcardiff.com//filem...andasianamericanadults-horizontal-en-2015.pdf

    But, when we calculate BMI for young people, it is necessary to include age and gender for the calculation as those variables can affect the rate of growth.

    For such a population, to calculate BMI, you can use the link below.

    https://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/bmi/calculator.html

    But regarding targets and cutoff values, I don't know the availability of adequately validated values for Sri Lanka as I deal with adult patients only.

    BMI is just one method of assessing obesity or body composition, which we use as a surrogate marker. But it has few downfalls as it does not give accurate assessment of infants, young children, bodybuilders and patients with critical illness or patients with body swelling.

    For adults,

    In addition, you can use waist circumference values ( For Asia, <90cm for men and <80 I'm for women)

    Then subcutaneous fat assessment by skinfold thickness.

    For the most accurate body composition measures, you need DEXA assessment.

    But Bioelectric impedance also gives comparatively precise measurements.

    To assess BIA, you can simply use Scale with BIA, or even the latest Samsung smartwatch has that feature

    But I'm not sure about the accuracy of the watch. But according to Samsung, it is pretty accurate.

    Body composition assays are helpful in calculating the composition of lean mass and fat separately and accurately. Not only overall body fat, can assess visceral fat too.
    So it can be use in body builders or patients with critical illness with body swelling with a good accuracy.

    P.S. Other methods of assessing body composition are
    MRI or nuclear magnetic resonance imaging
    Isotopic measurement of body water
    Water air displacement based measures
