good intentions is a proverb or aphorism. It is thought to have originated with Saint Bernard of Clairvaux who wrote , "L'enfer est plein de bonnes volontés et désires" (hell is full of good wishes and desires).[1] The meaning of the phrase is that often objectively wicked or evil acts stem from the subjectively good faith noble intentions of parties. A good example is the American economic policies of the interwar period. These were well-intentioned but they resulted in the Great Depression and World War 2 in which millions of people suffered and died. [2] Studies of business ethics indicate that most wrongdoing is not due directly to wickedness but is performed by people who did not plan to err.
