Thanks. Matath baya anagathae gena thama. My blog might get banned or I might get arrested. It seems that someone from this thread reported Police or forces last night.
This wouldn't happen if there was a media freedom in our country. They doesn't like the fact that I made news on this ban public. They want to enforce the laws, but then again to keep those laws secret.
Someone mentioned of exploding a bomb with a GPS enabled phone. I'd like to ask you how is that possible ? It seems that this person doesn't know about GPS.

Only that it can help increase security as you are never lost when having a phone with GPS. That's why they've included it to phones.

That give me a clear image of your knowledge about DIGITAL MAPPING and programming.
GPS tracking is all about digital mapping and drawing. One can identfy where he is now in the world. ('you are never lost when having a phone with GPS'
you know it)
A program aka a software aka an instruction set written to use the resources of the phone also can identify 'aha! now I'm at the target'.
Then what? Ok. You are not the programmer. Instead, a terrorist is at that end. So he use another resource, maybe the flasher of the N series camera phone, or the vibrator; motor of the phone is triggered 'on' position. But no flasher is there. Coz that tiger won't forget to connect another circuit.

Plus, if someone thinks that terrorists need GPS to find the latitude longitude etc. of airports airbases etc. of Sri Lanka. THEY CANNOT and THEY DON'T NEED GPS FOR THAT.
1. You cannot use GPS in a phone to find details of a remote place.
2. If you think they use GPS in a phone to confirm their location (ie- they are at Katunayake Apt and want to confirm that)
a. One must be a fool to use GPS on a phone to track their location. Why ? GPS in phones are low in quality, very inaccurate and takes ages to find out where you are.
b. They are not that stupid. They always know where they are where they want to go. Kotiyek kawadawath atharaman una kiyalawath, GPS ekak athe thiyagena iddi maattu wuna kiyalawath api ahala nene?
3. The correct latitude and longitude of any airport in the world is publicly available on the internet. You cannot ban these as general aviation pilots need these to find the airport.
The most important fact is that GoSL can never ban GPS signals to Sri Lanka and terrorists would never import their items through customs either.
This is why I tell that this law is pointless and only causes trouble to the poor consumer.
Some people here needs to learn more about technology prior to understanding how stupid and pointless this law is.
The only thing that GPS in a phone can do is finding your location, with some inaccuracy and there's no harm whatsoever it can do to the national security.
Plus, according to what I've paid, if you pay a huge tax (around 40,000), they are ready to release (from customs) your GPS enabled phone. The same thing with banning websites. You gotta pay, if you want to use. GPS, Internet or even to breathe, probably in the future.
Plus, the re-registration of SIM cards doesn't help. Due to the vast number of subscribers, they are going to allow phone dealers (reload points) to do the registration and we can imagine how easy that would be to make a fake ID. There's no solution. If they are to limit registration only to the head offices, there'd be days long queues.
The only thing that I can understand is that we are heading towards a Hitler - like control.
DjHiran: All N Series and E Series phones run on Symbian OS and all the ones with GPS run on Symbian OS 9.2 or higher. Which is considered the mobile OS with the highest security and you can NOT set it to do a motor, vibrate thing like on an analog gadol bage. To write an app for Symbian 9.2 or higher, you need a special devcert and a key and an extreme knowledge in Symbian C++ . To get a devcert you need to register with Symbian and pay a huge amount of money. ROM Patching or hacking doesn't help you to set the phone to trigger on something. This proves me your knowledge on phones with GPS, which is our main topic.

Dude, if someone read my posts in this thread (from the begining) he will find that I also don't want to see GPS banned stupidly if that is not what SLA needs. And Im not into muddy politics, I just tried to find a factor to justify that assuming that this is an SLA request. If you say 'no! thats what Mahinda wants' and actually thats it, that go far off my panorama. I hate loosing friends for stupid muddy politics.

Well, if government is planning to ban mobile phones with GPS, that is bcoz of people in those big seats do know nothing about new technology. Since they do not know about new technology they fear about it. So I guess they must be thinking magical things about GPS (by using GPS sattelite someone may be able to blow up a building or so). So they have come up with the solution of banning them. I'm pretty sure sooner they will also ask people to register chat Ids, e-mail accounts, PC's etc.. with government and to get a certificate.

Actually I think they do know only about GPS (probably nothing about grades). And sometimes they might have watched a film which shows mobile GPS used for some robbery or something like that. So now they plan to ban it. Very funny.

@vishwa: E51 doesn't have an inbuilt GPS chip. But are YOU bringing it or have you ordered and it is sent via courier ? If it's the latter you may have to explain to the customs that the E51 is GPS free and get it released (may be after paying tax). If YOU bring it, you can tell that it's your mobile and bring it with your hand luggage, you'll be able to skip the taxes and customs procedusers.
